Matthew 17 Cross References - Williams

1 Six days after this, Jesus took Peter and James and his brother John, and led them up on a high mountain, by themselves. 2 And in their presence His appearance was changed and His face shone like the sun, and His clothes turned as white as light. 3 Then Moses and Elijah appeared to them and kept talking with Him. 4 And Peter interrupted, and said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here! If you consent, I will put up three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." 5 While he was still speaking, a bright cloud cast its shadow over them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my Son, my Beloved, in whom I am delighted. Keep on listening to Him!" 6 When the disciples heard it, they fell upon their faces, for they were terribly frightened. 7 Then Jesus came and touched them, and said, "Get up and do not be so afraid." 8 They looked up and saw no one but Jesus Himself. 9 And as they were going down the mountain, Jesus warned them, saying, "Never mention to anyone what you have seen until the Son of Man is raised from the dead." 10 The disciples asked Him, "Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?" 11 He answered, "Elijah does come and will get everything ready. 12 But I say to you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but treated him as they pleased. Just so the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands." 13 Then the disciples understood that He spoke to them about John the Baptist. 14 When they reached the crowd, a man came up to Him, kneeling before Him and saying, 15 "Lord, do pity my son, for he has epilepsy and suffers excruciating pain, and often falls into the fire or into the water. 16 I brought him to your disciples, and they could not cure him." 17 And Jesus answered, "O you unbelieving and perverted people of the times! How long can I put up with you? Bring him here to me!" 18 And Jesus reproved the demon, and it came out of him, and the boy was cured that very moment. 19 After that the disciples came to Jesus and privately asked, "Why is it we could not drive it out?" 20 He answered them, "Because you have so little faith! For I solemnly say to you, if you have the faith that is living like a grain of mustard, you can say to this mountain, 'Move over from here to yonder,' and it will move over, and nothing will be impossible for you to do." 21 Omitted Text. 22 While they were going about in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of Man is going to be turned over into the hands of men, 23 and they will kill Him, but on the third day He will be raised again." And they were crushed with grief. 24 When they reached Capernaum, the collectors of the temple tax came to Peter and asked, "Does your Teacher pay the temple tax?" 25 He answered, "Yes." When Jesus reached home -- He got there ahead of Simon -- He asked him, "What do you think about it, Simon? From whom do civil rulers collect duties or taxes, from their own citizens or from aliens?" 26 He answered, "From aliens." Jesus said to him, "So their own citizens are exempt, 27 but still, that we may not influence them to do anything wrong, go down to the sea and throw over a hook. Pull in the first fish that bites, open its mouth and you will find in it a dollar. Take it and pay the tax for both of us."

2 Six days after this, Jesus took Peter, James, and John with Him, and led them up on a high mountain, alone by themselves. And in their presence His appearance was changed, 3 and His clothes were shining as white as white could be, yea, whiter than any earthly bleacher could bleach them. 4 And Elijah appeared to them, accompanied by Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. 5 Then Peter interrupted and said to Jesus, "Teacher, it is good for us to be here. So let us put up three tents, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah." 6 For he did not really know what to say, he was so frightened. 7 Then a cloud came and was circling over them, and a voice came out of the cloud, "This is my Son, my Beloved; keep on listening to Him!" 8 And as quick as a flash, on looking around, they saw no one with them but Jesus by Himself. 9 And while they were going down the mountain, He cautioned them not to tell anyone what they had seen, until the Son of Man should rise from the dead. 10 And they held that caution fast in their minds, as they continued to discuss among themselves what rising from the dead meant. 11 Then they asked Him, "Why do the scribes say that Elijah has to come first?" 12 He answered them, "Elijah does come first and gets everything ready, but how is it that the Scripture says about the Son of Man that He will suffer much and be rejected? 13 But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and people treated him just as they pleased, as the Scripture says about him."

Luke 8:51

51 When He reached the house, He let no one go in with Him but Peter, James, and John, and the child's father and mother.

Luke 9:28-36

28 Now about eight days after Jesus said this, He took Peter, John, and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. 29 And while He was praying, the look on His face changed, and His clothes turned dazzling white. 30 And two men were talking with Him. They were Moses and Elijah, 31 who appeared in splendor and were speaking of His departure which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 32 Now Peter and his companions had been overcome by sleep, but all at once they became wide awake and saw His splendor and the two men who were standing with Him. 33 And just as they were starting to leave Him, Peter said to Jesus, "Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah" -- although he did not know what he was saying. 34 But as he was saying this, a cloud came and was circling over them, and they were frightened as the two visitors entered into the cloud. 35 Then a voice came out of the cloud and said, "This is my Son, my Chosen One; continue to listen to Him!" 36 When the voice had ceased, Jesus was found to be alone. And they kept silence and told no one anything that they had seen at that time.

2 Corinthians 3:7-11

7 Now if the old religious service which resulted in death, although its law was carved in letters of stone, was introduced with a splendor so great that the Israelites could not keep their eyes fixed on Moses' face because of the splendor that was fading from it, 8 why should not this spiritual service be attended with much greater splendor? 9 For if the service connected with condemnation had such splendor, the service resulting in right standing with God will surely far surpass it in splendor. 10 For on account of its surpassing splendor, what was once so splendid has now no splendor at all. 11 For if what passed away was introduced with splendor, with how much greater splendor must what is permanent be attended?

Hebrews 3:1-6

1 Therefore, my Christian brothers, fix your thoughts on Jesus, the Messenger and High Priest whom we profess to follow, 2 to see how faithful He was to God who appointed Him, just as Moses was in all the house of God. 3 For just as the man who builds a house has greater glory than the house, by just so much is Jesus judged to be worthy of greater glory than Moses. 4 For every house is built by somebody, but the builder and furnisher of the universe is God. 5 Now Moses was faithful in all the house of God, yet only as a servant to bear witness to the message that should be spoken, 6 but Christ as a Son set over the house of God was faithful; and we are that house, if we keep up our courage and the joy that hope inspires to the very end.

Hebrews 2:1-3

1 This is why we must pay much closer attention to the message once heard, to keep from drifting to one side. 2 For if the message spoken through angels proved to be valid, and every violation and infraction of it had its adequate penalty, 3 how can we escape, if we pay no attention at all to a salvation that is so great? This is so because it was first proclaimed by the Lord Himself, and then it was proved to us to be valid by the very men who heard Him themselves,

Luke 3:3-14

3 And he went all over the Jordan valley, preaching a baptism conditioned on repentance to obtain the forgiveness of sins, 4 as it is written in the sermon-book of the prophet Isaiah: "Here is a voice of one shouting in the desert, 'Get the road ready for the Lord, make the paths straight for Him. 5 Every ravine must be filled up, and every mountain and hill leveled down; the crooked places must become straight roads, and the rough roads must be made smooth, 6 And all mankind must see the salvation of God.'" 7 So he used to say to the crowds that continued to come out there to be baptized by him: "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to escape from the wrath that is coming? 8 Produce, then, fruit that is consistent with the repentance that you profess, and do not even begin to say within yourselves, 'We have Abraham for our forefather,' for I tell you, God can raise up descendants for Abraham even out of these stones. 9 Now the axe is already lying at the roots of the trees. Every tree, then, that fails to bear good fruit is to be cut down and thrown into the fire." 10 So the crowds were asking him this question, "What then ought we to do?" 11 He answered them, "The man who has two shirts must share with him who has none, and the man who has food must do the same." 12 Then even the tax-collectors came to be baptized, and said to him, "Teacher, what ought we to do?" 13 So he said to them, "Stop collecting any more than is prescribed for you." 14 Then some soldiers too were asking him, "What ought we too to do?" So he said to them, "Never extort money from anyone, never make a false accusation, and always be satisfied with your wages."

2 Now when John in prison heard of the doings of the Christ, he sent this message by his disciples:

Matthew 11:9-15

9 If not, why did you go out there? To see a prophet? 10 This is the man of whom the Scripture says, "'Attention! I am sending my messenger on before you; He will prepare the road ahead of you.' 11 "I solemnly say to you, of all men born of women no one greater than John the Baptist has ever appeared; and yet the one who is least important in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 And from the days of John the Baptist until the present moment the kingdom of heaven has been continuously taken by storm, and those who take it by storm are seizing it as a precious prize. 13 For up to the days of John all the prophets, and even the law, prophesied about it, 14 and if you are willing to accept it, John himself is the Elijah who was to come. 15 Let him who has ears listen!

Matthew 14:3-10

3 For Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him out of the way by putting him in prison, just to please Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, 4 for John had said to him, "It is not right for you to have her as wife." 5 Although he wanted to have him killed, he was afraid of the people, for they regarded him as a prophet. 6 But when Herod's birthday came, Herodias' daughter danced before the guests. Herod was fascinated by her, 7 and so passionately promised to give her anything she might ask for. 8 And she, prompted by her mother, said, "Give me John the Baptist's head right here on a platter." 9 And the king was sorry, but on account of his oath and his guests, he ordered it to be given her. 10 And he sent and had John beheaded in prison.

From heaven, or from men?" They argued it out among themselves in this way, "If we say, 'From heaven,' He will say to us, 'Then why did you not believe him?'

32 For John came to you walking in the way of uprightness, and yet you did not believe him. The tax-collectors and prostitutes did believe him, but you, even though you saw that, would not change your minds afterward and believe him.

14 King Herod heard of Him, for His name was now on everybody's lips, and people were saying that John the Baptist had risen from the dead, and that this was why such mighty powers were working in Him. 15 But others were saying that He was Elijah, and still others that He was a prophet like the prophets of old. 16 But when Herod heard of Him, he said, "John, whom I beheaded, has risen from the dead." 17 For this very Herod had sent and seized John and bound him and put him in prison, just to please Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, because Herod had married her. 18 For John kept saying to Herod, "It is not right for you to be living with your brother's wife." 19 So Herodias had it in for him and wanted to have him killed. But she could not have it done, 20 for Herod stood in awe of John, because he knew that he was an upright and holy man, and so he protected him. When he heard him speak, he was very much disturbed, and yet he liked to hear him. 21 When a holiday came and Herod on his birthday gave a banquet to his state officials, his military officers, and other leading men of Galilee, 22 Herodias' daughter came in and danced for them, and fascinated Herod and his guests. So the king said to the girl, "Ask me for anything you want, and I will give it to you." 23 And he promised her on oath, "I will give you anything you ask for, up to half of my kingdom." 24 She left the room and asked her mother, "What shall I ask him for?" And she answered, "The head of John the Baptist." 25 Then she rushed at once before the king, and made this request, "I want you this very minute to give me John the Baptist's head on a platter." 26 The king, although exceedingly sorry, yet on account of his oath and his guests, did not like to refuse her, 27 and so at once ordered a soldier of his guard to bring his head. The soldier went off and beheaded John in the prison 28 and brought back his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.

Mark 11:30-32

30 Was John's baptism from heaven or from men? Answer me." 31 Then they argued with one another in this way, "If we say, 'It was from heaven,' He will say, 'Then why did you not believe him?' 32 On the other hand, can we say, 'It was from men'?" For they were afraid of the people, because everybody thought that John was really a prophet.

Luke 3:19-20

19 But Herod the governor, because he was repeatedly reproved by him for Herodias his brother's wife, and for all the wicked deeds that Herod had done, 20 added this on top of it all, that he put John in prison.

11 He came into His own world, but His own people did not welcome Him.

John 5:32-36

32 There is someone else who testifies to me, and I know that the testimony which He gives to me is of force. 33 You yourselves sent to John, and he has testified to the truth. 34 However, I do not accept mere human testimony, but I am saying this that you may be saved. 35 John was the lamp that kept on burning and shining, and you decided for a time to delight yourselves in his light. 36 But I have testimony that is higher than John's, for the works which my Father has committed to me to finish, the very works that I am doing, testify to me that the Father has sent me;

I am not the Christ; no, but He is coming after me, and I am not fit to untie the shoes on His feet.' 26 Brothers, descendants of the race of Abraham, and all among you who reverence God, it is to us that the message of this salvation has been sent. 27 For the people of Jerusalem and their leaders, because they were ignorant of Him, by condemning Him have actually fulfilled the utterances of the prophets which are read every Sabbath, 28 and although they could not find Him guilty of a capital offense, they begged Pilate to have Him put to death.

How long can I put up with you? So I asked your disciples to drive it out, but they could not do it." 19 He answered them, "Oh, you unbelieving people of the times! How long must I be with you! How long must I put up with you! Bring him to me." 20 And they brought the boy to Him. As soon as the spirit saw Him, it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and kept rolling over and foaming at the mouth. 21 Then He asked his father, "How long has he been like this?" He answered, "From his childhood; 22 and many a time it has thrown him into the fire or into the water, to destroy him. But if there is anything you can do for him, do pity us and help us!" 23 Jesus said to him, "If there is anything I can do! Everything is possible for him who has faith!" 24 The boy's father at once cried out and said, "I do have faith; help my lack of faith!" 25 Then Jesus, because He saw that a crowd was rushing up to Him, reproved the foul spirit and said to it, "You deaf and dumb spirit, get out of him, I charge you, and never get into him again." 26 Then it gave a shriek and violently convulsed the boy, and got out of him. And the boy looked like a corpse, so much so that the people said that he was dead. 27 But Jesus grasped his hand and raised him, and he got up. 28 When Jesus got home and was by Himself, His disciples were asking Him, "Why could not we drive it out?" 29 He answered them, "This sort of thing can be driven out only by prayer."

How long must I be with you and put up with you? Bring him here to me." 42 Even while the boy was coming to Him, the demon dashed him down and convulsed him, but Jesus reproved the foul spirit and cured the boy and gave back to his father. 43 So they all continued to be utterly astounded at the greatness of God. Was it not with those who had sinned, whose carcasses fell in the desert? 18 To whom did He take oath that they should not be admitted to His rest, if it was not to those who disobeyed Him? 19 So we see that it was because of their unbelief that they could not be admitted to it.

12 Then His disciples came up to Him and asked, "Do you know that the Pharisees were knocked breathless to hear what you have just said?" 13 He answered, "Every plant that my heavenly Father did not plant must be rooted up. 14 Let them alone. 1 Corinthians 10:32-33

32 Stop being stumbling blocks to Jews or Greeks or to the church of God, 33 just as I myself am in the habit of pleasing everybody in everything, not aiming at my own welfare but at that of as many people as possible, in order that they may be saved.
