Matthew 11:9-15

9 If not, why did you go out there? To see a prophet? 10 This is the man of whom the Scripture says, "'Attention! I am sending my messenger on before you; He will prepare the road ahead of you.' 11 "I solemnly say to you, of all men born of women no one greater than John the Baptist has ever appeared; and yet the one who is least important in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. 12 And from the days of John the Baptist until the present moment the kingdom of heaven has been continuously taken by storm, and those who take it by storm are seizing it as a precious prize. 13 For up to the days of John all the prophets, and even the law, prophesied about it, 14 and if you are willing to accept it, John himself is the Elijah who was to come. 15 Let him who has ears listen!

Matthew 14:3-10

3 For Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him out of the way by putting him in prison, just to please Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, 4 for John had said to him, "It is not right for you to have her as wife." 5 Although he wanted to have him killed, he was afraid of the people, for they regarded him as a prophet. 6 But when Herod's birthday came, Herodias' daughter danced before the guests. Herod was fascinated by her, 7 and so passionately promised to give her anything she might ask for. 8 And she, prompted by her mother, said, "Give me John the Baptist's head right here on a platter." 9 And the king was sorry, but on account of his oath and his guests, he ordered it to be given her. 10 And he sent and had John beheaded in prison.

Mark 6:14-28

14 King Herod heard of Him, for His name was now on everybody's lips, and people were saying that John the Baptist had risen from the dead, and that this was why such mighty powers were working in Him. 15 But others were saying that He was Elijah, and still others that He was a prophet like the prophets of old. 16 But when Herod heard of Him, he said, "John, whom I beheaded, has risen from the dead." 17 For this very Herod had sent and seized John and bound him and put him in prison, just to please Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, because Herod had married her. 18 For John kept saying to Herod, "It is not right for you to be living with your brother's wife." 19 So Herodias had it in for him and wanted to have him killed. But she could not have it done, 20 for Herod stood in awe of John, because he knew that he was an upright and holy man, and so he protected him. When he heard him speak, he was very much disturbed, and yet he liked to hear him. 21 When a holiday came and Herod on his birthday gave a banquet to his state officials, his military officers, and other leading men of Galilee, 22 Herodias' daughter came in and danced for them, and fascinated Herod and his guests. So the king said to the girl, "Ask me for anything you want, and I will give it to you." 23 And he promised her on oath, "I will give you anything you ask for, up to half of my kingdom." 24 She left the room and asked her mother, "What shall I ask him for?" And she answered, "The head of John the Baptist." 25 Then she rushed at once before the king, and made this request, "I want you this very minute to give me John the Baptist's head on a platter." 26 The king, although exceedingly sorry, yet on account of his oath and his guests, did not like to refuse her, 27 and so at once ordered a soldier of his guard to bring his head. The soldier went off and beheaded John in the prison 28 and brought back his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother.

Mark 9:12-13

12 He answered them, "Elijah does come first and gets everything ready, but how is it that the Scripture says about the Son of Man that He will suffer much and be rejected? 13 But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and people treated him just as they pleased, as the Scripture says about him."

Mark 11:30-32

Answer me." 31 Then they argued with one another in this way, "If we say, 'It was from heaven,' He will say, 'Then why did you not believe him?' 32 On the other hand, can we say, 'It was from men'?" For they were afraid of the people, because everybody thought that John was really a prophet.

Luke 9:21-25

John 5:32-36

32 There is someone else who testifies to me, and I know that the testimony which He gives to me is of force. 33 You yourselves sent to John, and he has testified to the truth. 34 However, I do not accept mere human testimony, but I am saying this that you may be saved. 35 John was the lamp that kept on burning and shining, and you decided for a time to delight yourselves in his light. 36 But I have testimony that is higher than John's, for the works which my Father has committed to me to finish, the very works that I am doing, testify to me that the Father has sent me;

24 as John, before His coming, had already preached baptism as an expression of repentance, for all the people of Israel. 25 As John was closing his career, he said, 'What do you take me to be? I am not the Christ; no, but He is coming after me, and I am not fit to untie the shoes on His feet.' 26 Brothers, descendants of the race of Abraham, and all among you who reverence God, it is to us that the message of this salvation has been sent. 27 For the people of Jerusalem and their leaders, because they were ignorant of Him, by condemning Him have actually fulfilled the utterances of the prophets which are read every Sabbath, 28 and although they could not find Him guilty of a capital offense, they begged Pilate to have Him put to death.
