⁹ "I know your pressing trouble and poverty, but still you are rich; I know how you are abused by those who claim to be Jews although they are not, but are only a synagogue of Satan.

¹⁰ Then Jesus said to him, "Be gone, Satan! For the Scripture says, 'You must worship the Lord your God, and serve Him alone.'"

¹⁸ "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for He has consecrated me to preach the good news to the poor; He has sent me to announce release to captives and recovery of sight to the blind; to send the downtrodden away in liberty and

²⁰ Then He fixed His eyes upon His disciples, and began to speak. "Blessed are you who are poor, for the kingdom of God is yours!

²¹ So it is with the man who continues to pile up possessions for himself, and is not rich in God."

⁶⁵ And they continued to say many other abusive things to Him.

³³ I have told you these things, that you through union with me may have peace. In the world you have trouble, but be courageous! I have conquered the world."

²² strengthening the hearts of the disciples and encouraging them to continue in the faith, and warning them that it is through enduring many hardships that we must get into the kingdom of God.

¹¹ I had them punished and tried to force them to use abusive language; in my extreme fury against them I continued to pursue them even into distant towns.

¹⁷ Now if you call yourself a Jew, and rely on law, and boast about God,

²⁸ For the real Jew is not the man who is a Jew on the outside, and real circumcision is not outward physical circumcision. ²⁹ The real Jew is the man who is a Jew on the inside, and real circumcision is heart-circumcision, a spiritual, not a literal, affair. This man's praise originates, not with men, but with God.

³ And not only that, but this too: let us continue exulting in our sufferings, for we know that suffering produces endurance,

³⁵ Who can separate us from Christ's love? Can suffering or misfortune or persecution or hunger or destitution or danger or the sword?

⁶ But it is not that God's word has failed. For not everybody that is descended from Israel really belongs to Israel,

¹² ever happy in hope, always patient in suffering, ever persistent in prayer,

¹⁰ sad but always glad, poor but making many people rich, penniless but really possessing everything.

² because in spite of a terrible test of trouble, the mighty flood of their gladness mingling with the depths of their poverty has overflowed and resulted in the abundance of their liberality.

⁹ For by experience you know the unmerited favor shown by our Lord Jesus Christ; that although He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, in order that by His poverty you might become rich.

⁴ for when we were with you, we told you beforehand that we were going to be pressed with difficulties, and it took place, as you know.

⁶ indeed, it is right for God to repay with crushing sorrows those who cause you these crushing sorrows, ⁷ and to give rest to you who are being crushed with sorrows, along with us, at the unveiling of our Lord Jesus Christ from heaven, with His mighty angels

¹³ though I once used to abuse, persecute, and insult Him. But mercy was shown me by Him, because I did it in ignorance and unbelief,

¹⁸ charge them to continue doing good and being rich in good deeds, open-handed and generous hearted,

⁵ Listen, my dearly loved brothers. Has not God chosen the poor of the world to be rich in faith and to possess the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him? ⁶ But you, in contrast, have humiliated the poor man. Are not the rich men those who oppress you and drag you to court?

² "I know what you have done; your hard work and patient endurance; that you cannot tolerate wicked persons; that you have tested those who claimed to be apostles although they were not, and have found them to be imposters,

⁹ I will make some, who claim to be Jews although they are not, but are lying -- I will make them come and fall at your feet and find out that I have loved you.

¹⁷ Because you say, 'I am rich, I have already become rich, I need nothing,' and you do not know that you are the very one that is wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked; ¹⁸ I advise you to buy of me gold that has been refined in the fire, so that you may become rich, and white clothes to put on, to hide your shameful nakedness, and salve to put on your eyes, to make you see.

¹⁴ I answered him, "You know, my lord." He said to me: "These are the people who are coming through the great persecution, who have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.
