²⁹ And this I say, brethren, the time henceforth is having been shortened—that both those having wives may be as not having;

¹ Man, born of woman! Of few days, and full of trouble! ² As a flower he hath gone forth, and is cut off, And he fleeth as a shadow and standeth not.

⁴ `Cause me to know, O Jehovah, mine end, And the measure of my days—what it is,' I know how frail I am . ⁵ Lo, handbreadths Thou hast made my days, And mine age is as nothing before Thee, Only, all vanity is every man set up. Selah. ⁶ Only, in an image doth each walk habitually, Only, in vain, they are disquieted, He heapeth up and knoweth not who gathereth them.
⁷ And, now, what have I expected? O Lord, my hope—it is of Thee.

⁵ Thou hast inundated them, they are asleep, In the morning as grass he changeth. ⁶ In the morning it flourisheth, and hath changed, At evening it is cut down, and hath withered.
⁷ For we were consumed in Thine anger, And in Thy fury we have been troubled. ⁸ Thou hast set our iniquities before Thee, Our hidden things at the light of Thy face, ⁹ For all our days pined away in Thy wrath, We consumed our years as a meditation. ¹⁰ Days of our years, in them are seventy years, And if, by reason of might, eighty years, Yet is their enlargement labour and vanity, For it hath been cut off hastily, and we fly away.

¹⁵ Mortal man! as grass are his days, As a flower of the field so he flourisheth; ¹⁶ For a wind hath passed over it, and it is not, And its place doth not discern it any more.

¹² For who knoweth what is good for a man in life, the number of the days of the life of his vanity, and he maketh them as a shadow? for who declareth to man what is after him under the sun?

¹⁰ All that thy hand findeth to do, with thy power do, for there is no work, and device, and knowledge, and wisdom in Sheol whither thou art going.

⁷ And the dust returneth to the earth as it was, And the spirit returneth to God who gave it.
⁸ Vanity of vanities, said the preacher, the whole is vanity.

¹³ The end of the whole matter let us hear: —`Fear God, and keep His commands, for this is the whole of man. ¹⁴ For every work doth God bring into judgment, with every hidden thing, whether good or bad.'

¹ Lo, Jehovah is emptying the land, And is making it waste, And hath overturned it on its face, And hath scattered its inhabitants. ² And it hath been—as a people so a priest, As the servant so his master, As the maid-servant so her mistress, As the buyer so the seller, As the lender so the borrower, As the usurer so he who is lifting it on himself.

⁶ A voice is saying, `Call,' And he said, `What do I call?' All flesh is grass, and all its goodliness is As a flower of the field: ⁷ Withered hath grass, faded the flower, For the Spirit of Jehovah blew upon it, Surely the people is grass; ⁸ Withered hath grass, faded the flower, But a word of our God riseth for ever.

¹¹ And this, knowing the time, that for us, the hour already is to be aroused out of sleep, for now nearer is our salvation than when we did believe; ¹² the night did advance, and the day came nigh; let us lay aside, therefore, the works of the darkness, and let us put on the armour of the light;

³¹ and those using this world, as not using it up; for passing away is the fashion of this world.

¹³ now, then, may we go forth unto him without the camp, his reproach bearing; ¹⁴ for we have not here an abiding city, but the coming one we seek;

¹³ Go, now, ye who are saying, `To-day and to-morrow we will go on to such a city, and will pass there one year, and traffic, and make gain;' <sup>14</sup> who do not know the thing of the morrow; for what is your life? for it is a vapour that is appearing for a little, and then is vanishing; <sup>15</sup> instead of your saying, `If the Lord may will, we shall live, and do this or that;' ¹⁶ and now ye glory in your pride; all such glorying is evil;

²⁴ because all flesh is as grass, and all glory of man as flower of grass; wither did the grass, and the flower of it fell away,

⁷ And of all things the end hath come nigh; be sober-minded, then, and watch unto the prayers,

⁸ And this one thing let not be unobserved by you, beloved, that one day with the Lord is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day;
⁹ the Lord is not slow in regard to the promise, as certain count slowness, but is long-suffering to us, not counselling any to be lost but all to pass on to reformation,

¹⁷ and the world doth pass away, and the desire of it, and he who is doing the will of God, he doth remain—to the age.
