⁵ and the light in the darkness did shine, and the darkness did not perceive it.

¹³ They have been among rebellious ones of light, They have not discerned His ways, Nor abode in His paths. ¹⁴ At the light doth the murderer rise, He doth slay the poor and needy, And in the night he is as a thief. ¹⁵ And the eye of an adulterer Hath observed the twilight, Saying, `No eye doth behold me.' And he putteth the face in secret. ¹⁶ He hath dug in the darkness—houses; By day they shut themselves up, They have not known light. ¹⁷ When together, morning is to them death shade, When he discerneth the terrors of death shade.

²² `Till when, ye simple, do ye love simplicity? And have scorners their scorning desired? And do fools hate knowledge?

²⁹ Because that they have hated knowledge, And the fear of Jehovah have not chosen. ³⁰ They have not consented to my counsel, They have despised all my reproof,

¹⁰ in the world he was, and the world through him was made, and the world did not know him:

¹⁹ `And this is the judgment, that the light hath come to the world, and men did love the darkness rather than the light, for their works were evil; ²⁰ for every one who is doing wicked things hateth the light, and doth not come unto the light, that his works may not be detected;

³⁶ while ye have the light, believe in the light, that sons of light ye may become.' These things spake Jesus, and having gone away, he was hid from them,
³⁷ yet he having done so many signs before them, they were not believing in him, ³⁸ that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he said, `Lord, who gave credence to our report? and the arm of the Lord—to whom was it revealed?' <sup>39</sup> Because of this they were not able to believe, that again Isaiah said, <sup>40</sup> `He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart, that they might not see with the eyes, and understand with the heart, and turn back, and I might heal them;'

²⁸ And, according as they did not approve of having God in knowledge, God gave them up to a disapproved mind, to do the things not seemly;

¹⁴ and the natural man doth not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for to him they are foolishness, and he is not able to know them, because spiritually they are discerned;
