Jeremiah 40 The word which came to Jeremiah from the LORD, after that Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had let him go from Ramah, when he had taken him being bound in chains among all that were carried away captive of Jerusalem and Judah, who were carried away captive to Babylon.

1 H1697 The word H3414 which came to Jeremiah H3068 from the LORD, H310 after H5018 that Nebuzaradan H7227 the captain H2876 of the guard H7971 [H8763] had let him go H7414 from Ramah, H3947 [H8800] when he had taken H631 [H8803] him being bound H246 in chains H8432 among H1546 all that were carried away captive H3389 of Jerusalem H3063 and Judah, H1540 [H8716] who were carried away captive H894 to Babylon.

2 H7227 And the captain H2876 of the guard H3947 [H8799] took H3414 Jeremiah, H559 [H8799] and said H3068 to him, The LORD H430 thy God H1696 [H8765] hath pronounced H7451 this evil H4725 upon this place.

3 H3068 Now the LORD H935 [H8686] hath brought H6213 [H8799] it, and done H1696 [H8765] according as he hath said: H2398 [H8804] because ye have sinned H3068 against the LORD, H8085 [H8804] and have not obeyed H6963 his voice, H1697 therefore this thing is come upon you.

4 H6605 [H8765] And now, behold, I loose H3117 thee this day H246 from the chains H3027 which were upon thine hand. H2896 H5869 If it seemeth good H935 [H8800] to thee to come H894 with me into Babylon, H935 [H8798] come; H7760 H5869 [H8799] and I will look well H7489 H5869 [H8804] to thee: but if it seemeth ill H935 [H8800] to thee to come H894 with me into Babylon, H2308 [H8798] forbear: H7200 [H8798] behold, H776 all the land H6440 is at the face of H413 thee: where it seemeth H2896 good H3477 H5869 and convenient H3212 [H8800] for thee to go, H3212 [H8798] there go.

5 H7725 [H8799] Now while he had not yet gone back, H7725 [H8798] he said, Go back H1436 also to Gedaliah H1121 the son H296 of Ahikam H1121 the son H8227 of Shaphan, H4428 whom the king H894 of Babylon H6485 [H8689] had made governor H5892 over the cities H3063 of Judah, H3427 [H8798] and dwell H8432 with him among H5971 the people: H3212 [H8798] or go H3477 H5869 wherever it seemeth convenient H3212 [H8800] to thee to go. H7227 So the captain H2876 of the guard H5414 [H8799] gave H737 him provisions H4864 and a reward, H7971 [H8762] and let him go.

6 H3414 Then Jeremiah H935 [H8799] went H1436 to Gedaliah H1121 the son H296 of Ahikam H4708 to Mizpah; H3427 [H8799] and dwelt H8432 with him among H5971 the people H7604 [H8737] that were left H776 in the land.

7 H8269 Now when all the captains H2428 of the forces H7704 who were in the fields, H582 even they and their men, H8085 [H8799] heard H4428 that the king H894 of Babylon H1436 had made Gedaliah H1121 the son H296 of Ahikam H6485 [H8689] governor H776 in the land, H6485 [H8689] and had committed H582 to him men, H802 and women, H2945 and children, H1803 and of the poor H776 of the land, H1540 [H8717] of them that were not carried away captive H894 to Babylon;

8 H935 [H8799] Then they came H1436 to Gedaliah H4708 to Mizpah, H3458 even Ishmael H1121 the son H5418 of Nethaniah, H3110 and Johanan H3129 and Jonathan H1121 the sons H7143 of Kareah, H8304 and Seraiah H1121 the son H8576 of Tanhumeth, H1121 and the sons H5778 of Ephai H5200 the Netophathite, H3153 and Jezaniah H1121 the son H4602 of a Maachathite, H582 they and their men.

9 H1436 And Gedaliah H1121 the son H296 of Ahikam H1121 the son H8227 of Shaphan H7650 [H8735] swore H582 to them and to their men, H559 [H8800] saying, H3372 [H8799] Fear H5647 [H8800] not to serve H3778 the Chaldeans: H3427 [H8798] dwell in H776 the land, H5647 [H8798] and serve H4428 the king H894 of Babylon, H3190 [H8799] and it shall be well with you.

10 H3427 [H8802] As for me, behold, I will dwell H4709 at Mizpah H5975 H6440 [H8800] to serve H3778 the Chaldeans, H935 [H8799] who will come H622 [H8798] to us: but ye, gather H3196 ye wine, H7019 and summer fruits, H8081 and oil, H7760 [H8798] and put H3627 them in your vessels, H3427 [H8798] and dwell H5892 in your cities H8610 [H8804] that ye have taken.

11 H3064 Likewise when all the Judeans H4124 that were in Moab, H5983 and among the Ammonites, H123 and in Edom, H776 and that were in all the lands, H8085 [H8804] heard H4428 that the king H894 of Babylon H5414 [H8804] had left H7611 a remnant H3063 of Judah, H6485 [H8689] and that he had set H1436 over them Gedaliah H1121 the son H296 of Ahikam H1121 the son H8227 of Shaphan;

12 H3064 Even all the Judeans H7725 [H8799] returned out H4725 of all places H5080 [H8738] where they were driven, H935 [H8799] and came H776 to the land H3063 of Judah, H1436 to Gedaliah, H4708 to Mizpah, H622 [H8799] and gathered H3196 wine H7019 and summer fruits H3966 H7235 [H8687] in abundance.

13 H3110 Moreover Johanan H1121 the son H7143 of Kareah, H8269 and all the captains H2428 of the forces H7704 that were in the fields, H935 [H8804] came H1436 to Gedaliah H4708 to Mizpah,

14 H559 [H8799] And said H3045 [H8800] to him, Dost thou certainly H3045 [H8799] know H1185 that Baalis H4428 the king H1121 H5983 of the Ammonites H7971 [H8804] hath sent H3458 Ishmael H1121 the son H5418 of Nethaniah H5221 H5315 [H8687] to slay H1436 thee? But Gedaliah H1121 the son H296 of Ahikam H539 [H8689] believed them not.

15 H3110 Then Johanan H1121 the son H7143 of Kareah H559 [H8804] spoke H1436 to Gedaliah H4709 in Mizpah H5643 secretly, H559 [H8800] saying, H3212 [H8799] Let me go, H5221 [H8686] I pray thee, and I will slay H3458 Ishmael H1121 the son H5418 of Nethaniah, H376 and no man H3045 [H8799] shall know H5221 H5315 [H8686] it: why should he slay H3064 thee, that all the Judeans H6908 [H8737] who are gathered H6327 [H8738] to thee should be scattered, H7611 and the remnant H3063 of Judah H6 [H8804] perish?

16 H1436 But Gedaliah H1121 the son H296 of Ahikam H559 [H8799] said H3110 to Johanan H1121 the son H7143 of Kareah, H6213 [H8799] Thou shalt not do H1697 this thing: H1696 [H8802] for thou speakest H8267 falsely H3458 of Ishmael.
