Exodus 3:1-22

1 ¶ Now as Moses shepherded the sheep of Jethro, his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, he led the flock to the backside of the desert and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. 2 There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire coming from the middle of a bush. Moses saw that the bush was on fire but that it was not burning up. 3 Moses said, “I will go now, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burned.” 4 When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from the center of the bush, "Moses! Moses!" He said, "Here I am." 5 "Do not come any closer," God said. "Remove your sandals from your feet, because the place where you are standing is holy ground." 6 Then he said, "I am the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob." At this, Moses hid his face because he was afraid to look at God. 7 The LORD said, "I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows. 8 I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey; to the place of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite. 9 And now, look, the cry of distress of the Israelites has come to me, and also I see the oppression with which the Egyptians are oppressing them. 10 So go! I am sending you to Pharaoh. Bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt." 11 But Moses said to God, "Who am I? How can I go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?" 12 God said: "I will be with you! This shall be the sign to you that it is I who have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall worship God at this mountain." 13 But Moses said to God, "Look, if I go to the Israelites and I say to them, 'The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,' and they say to me, 'What is his name?' then what shall I say to them?" 14 And God said to Moses, I AM WHO I AM. And he said, Thus you will say to the sons of Israel, I AM has sent me to you. 15 God also said to Moses, "Tell the Israelites, 'The LORD, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob sent me to you.' This is my name forever, and this is how I am to be remembered from generation to generation. 16 Go and assemble the elders of Israel, and say to them, The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, of Isaac, and of Jacob, appeared to me, saying, I have surely visited you, and seen that which is done to you in Egypt. 17 And I have said it, that I will bring you out of the tribulation of Egypt unto the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites: even a land that floweth with milk and honey.' 18 "The elders of Israel will listen to you, and then you and they are to go to the king of Egypt and say to him, 'The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us. Now, let us take a three day journey into the desert to sacrifice to the LORD our God.' 19 But I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go, but by a mighty hand. 20 "So I will stretch out my hand and strike Egypt with all my wonders that I will do in it’s midst. After that he will let you go. 21 And I will give this people favor in the eyes of the Egyptians, and then when you go, you will not go empty-handed. 22 Each woman is to ask her neighbor or any foreign woman in her house for articles of gold and for clothing, and use them to clothe your sons and daughters. You will plunder the Egyptians."

Jeremiah 1:1-19

1 The words of Jeremiah, son of Hilkiah. He was one of the priests at Anathoth in the territory of Benjamin. 2 The word of the LORD came to him during the thirteen year of the reign of Ammon's son Josiah, the king of Judah 3 and it is in the days of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, till the completion of the eleventh year of Zedekiah son of Josiah, king of Judah, till the removal of Jerusalem in the fifth month." 4 Now the word of the LORD came to me, saying, 5 “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. Before you were born, I sanctified you. I have appointed you a prophet to the nations.” 6 I, Jeremiah, said: "Sovereign LORD, I do not know how to speak. I am only a child!" 7 the LORD said to me: "'Do not say, 'I am only a child.' You must go wherever I send you. You must say whatever I command you to say. 8 Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you," declares the LORD. 9 Then the LORD stretched out his hand and touched my mouth. the LORD said to me: »I have put my words in your mouth. 10 See, today I've appointed you to prophesy about nations and kingdoms, to pull up and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant." 11 The word of the LORD came to me, asking, "What do you see, Jeremiah?" I replied, "I see an almond branch." 12 Then the LORD said to me, "You have seen well; for I watch over my word to perform it." 13 The word of the LORD came to me a second time: "What do you see?" I replied, "I see a boiling pot, and its mouth is tilted away from the north." 14 Then the LORD said to me, "From the north disaster will pour out on all who live in the land, 15 For, look, I am calling to all the clans of the kingdoms of the north," declares the LORD, "and they will come and set each one his throne at the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem, and against all its surrounding walls, and against all the cities of Judah. 16 "I will pronounce judgment against my people because of all their wickedness. They abandoned me. They burned incense to other gods. They worshiped what their hands have made. 17 But you, you must gird your loins, and stand, and speak to them all that I command you. Do not be afraid of them, or I will shatter you before them. 18 For, behold, today I have made you a fortified city, and an iron pillar, and bronze walls against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, against her princes, against her priests, and to the people of the land. 19 "They will fight you but they will not defeat you. I am with you, and I will rescue you," declares the LORD.
