²¹ Isaac prayed to the LORD for his wife because she was childless. the LORD answered his prayer. His wife Rebekah became pregnant.

²⁴ And when the time came for her to give birth, there were two children in her body.

² Simon Peter, Thomas called Didymus, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together.

I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams and the fat of fattened animals and I do not delight in the blood of bulls and ram-lambs and goats. ¹² When you come to appear before me, who has required this at your hand, to trample my courts? ¹³ Bring no more vain offerings. Incense is an abomination to me; new moons, Sabbaths, and convocations: I can't bear with evil assemblies. ¹⁴ Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hateth; they are become a burden unto me; I am weary to bear them, ¹⁵ "When you spread out your hands in prayer, I will hide my eyes from you. Even though you offer many prayers, I will not listen because your hands are full of blood. ¹⁶ "Wash yourselves! Become clean! Get your evil deeds out of my sight. Stop doing evil. ¹⁷ Learn to do well—Seek justice, Correct the oppressor,—Vindicate the fatherless, Plead the cause of the widow, ¹⁸ "Come now, and let us reason together," says the LORD: "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool. ¹⁹ "If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the best from the land. ²⁰ but if you refuse and rebel, you shall be devoured by the sword; for the mouth of the LORD has spoken it." ²¹ How the faithful city has become a harlot! She who was full of justice! Righteousness lodged in her, but now murderers. ²² Your silver has become dross; your wine is diluted with water. ²³ Your princes are rebels and companions of thieves. Every one loves a bribe and runs after gifts. They do not defend the orphan and the legal dispute of the widow does not come before them. ²⁴ Therefore the Lord, the LORD of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel, says: "Ah, I will get relief from my adversaries, and avenge myself of my enemies; ²⁵ And I will turn my hand upon you, and thoroughly purge away your dross, and take away all your tin: ²⁶ And I will restore your judges as at first, and your counselors as at the beginning; afterwards you shall be called the city of righteousness, the faithful city. ²⁷ Zion will be redeemed with justice and her converts with righteousness. ²⁸ But the destruction of rebels and sinners shall be together, and those who forsake the LORD will perish. ²⁹ For you will be ashamed of the oaks in which you delighted, and you will be disgraced because of the gardens that you have chosen. ³⁰ You will be like an oak whose leaves wither and like a garden without water. ³¹ The strong will be like tinder, and his work like a spark. They will both burn together, and no one will quench them.”

¹¹ In Him we were also chosen as God’s own, having been predestined according to the plan of Him who works out everything by the counsel of His will,

³ Children are an inheritance from the LORD. They are a blessing from him. ⁴ Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, so are the children of one's youth. ⁵ Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them. They shall not be put to shame when they speak with their enemies in the gate.

⁵ “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. Before you were born, I sanctified you. I have appointed you a prophet to the nations.”

²² The children struggled together within her. She said, "If it be so, why do I live?" She went to inquire of the LORD.

²⁴ And when the time came for her to give birth, there were two children in her body. ²⁵ The first came out red all over, like a hairy garment. They named him Esau. ²⁶ And after him, his brother came out, gripping Esau's foot; and he was named Jacob: Isaac was sixty years old when she gave birth to them.

²⁷ When the time came for her to give birth, there were twin boys in her womb. ²⁸ As she was giving birth, one of them put out his hand. The midwife took a scarlet thread and tied it on his wrist and said: "This one came out first." ²⁹ When he drew back his hand, his brother came out. She said: "So this is how you have broken out!" He was named Perez. ³⁰ Then his brother, who had the scarlet thread on his wrist, came out and he was given the name Zerah.

⁹ Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their work. ¹⁰ For if one falls, his companion may help him up. But pity the one who falls and there is no one to help him up. ¹¹ If two lies down together they keep warm. How can one be warm alone? ¹² One may be overcome, but two may make resistance: A threefold cable is not lightly broken.
