A man planted a vineyard, and set a hedge about it, and dug a wine-vat, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went abroad. ² And at the season he sent to the husbandmen a servant, that he might receive from the husbandmen of the fruits of the vineyard. ³ And they took him and beat him, and sent him away empty. ⁴ And again he sent to them another servant; and at him they cast stones, and wounded him in the head, and sent him away shamefully treated. ⁵ And he sent another; and him they killed, and many others; beating some, and killing some. ⁶ Having yet therefore one beloved son, he sent him also to them last, saying: They will reverence my son. ⁷ But those husbandmen said among themselves: This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours. ⁸ And they took, and killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard. ⁹ What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others. ¹⁰ And have ye not read this scripture: The stone which the builders disallowed, The same is become the head of the corner; ¹¹ This is from the Lord, and is wonderful in our eyes. ¹² And they sought to lay hold of him, but feared the people; for they knew that he spoke the parable against them; and they left him, and went away. ¹³ And they send to him some of the Pharisees and of the Herodians, to entrap him with a word. ¹⁴ And they come and say to him: Teacher, we know that thou art true, and carest for no one; for thou regardest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God in truth. Ye greatly err. ²⁸ And one of the scribes came to him, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he answered them well, asked him: Which commandment is first of all? ²⁹ And Jesus answered him: First is, Hear, O Israel; the Lord is our God, the Lord is one; ³⁰ and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the first commandment. ³¹ Second is this: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. There is no other commandment greater than these. ³² And the scribe said to him: Well, Teacher; thou saidst truly that he is one, and there is no other beside him; ³³ and to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbor as himself, is more than all the whole-burnt-offerings and sacrifices. ³⁴ And Jesus, seeing that he answered intelligently, said to him: Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no one dared any longer to question him. ³⁵ And Jesus answering said, while teaching in the temple: How say the scribes that the Christ is son of David? ³⁶ For David himself said, in the Holy Spirit: The LORD said to my Lord, Sit on my right hand, Till I put thy enemies under thy feet. ³⁷ David himself calls him Lord; and whence is he his son? And the great multitude heard him gladly. ³⁸ And he said to them in his teaching: Beware of the scribes, who love to go about in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, ³⁹ and the first seats in the synagogues, and the first places at the feasts; ⁴⁰ who devour widows' houses, and for a pretense make long prayers; these shall receive greater condemnation. ⁴¹ And sitting over against the treasury, he beheld how the people cast money into the treasury; and many that were rich cast in much. ⁴² And one poor widow came, and cast in two mites, which are a farthing. ⁴³ And calling to him his disciples, he said to them: Verily I say to you, that this poor widow cast in more than all who are casting into the treasury. ⁴⁴ For all cast in out of their abundance; but she, out of her want, cast in all that she had, her whole living.
