LEB⁽ⁱ⁾ ⁴ And he answered and* said, "Have you not read that the one who created them* from the beginning made them male and female ⁵ and said, 'On account of this a man will leave his* father and his* mother and will be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'?* ⁶ So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, man must not separate." ⁷ They said to him, "Why then did Moses command us* to give a document—a certificate of divorce—and to divorce her?" ⁸ He said to them, "Moses, with reference to your hardness of heart, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not like this.
