When evening fell, the disciples came up to him and said, "It is a desert place and the day is now gone; send off the crowds to buy food for themselves in the villages."
Jesus said to them, "They do not need to go away; give them some food yourselves."
They said, "We have only five loaves with us and two fish."
He said, "Bring them here to me."
Then he ordered the crowds to recline on the grass, and after taking the five loaves and the two fish he looked up to heaven, blessed them, and after breaking the loaves handed them to the disciples, and the disciples handed them to the crowds.
They all ate and had enough; besides, they picked up the fragments left over and filled twelve baskets with them.
The men who ate numbered about five thousand, apart from the women and children.
