Riverside⁽ⁱ⁾ ¹ THEN came one of the seven angels that had the seven plagues and spoke with me. He said, "Come here. I will show you the doom of the great prostitute who sits on many waters ² and with whom the kings of the earth have committed lewdness, while the inhabitants of the earth have become drunk with the wine of her lewdness." ³ He carried me away in the Spirit into a wilderness. There I saw a woman sitting upon a scarlet beast covered with profane names, and with seven heads and ten horns. ⁴ The woman was clothed in purple and scarlet and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls. She had in her hand a golden cup full of abominations and the impurities of her lewdness. ⁵ On her forehead was written a mysterious name: "Babylon the Great, the Mother of Prostitutes and of the abominations of the earth." ⁶ I saw the woman drunk with the blood of the holy and with the blood of the witnesses for Jesus. When I saw her I wondered greatly.
