But when Herod heard of it, he said, "This is John, whom I beheaded; he has risen from the dead."
For Herod himself had sent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife; for he had married her.
For John had said to Herod, "It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife."
Therefore Herodias had a quarrel against him, and would have killed him; but she could not:
For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a just man and holy, and observed him; and when he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly.
Then when a convenient day came, Herod made a supper on his birthday to his lords, high captains, and chief estate owners of Galilee;
And when Herodias' daughter came in, and danced, and pleased Herod and those who sat with him, the king said to the damsel, "Ask of me whatever you desire, and I will give it to you."
He even swore to her, "Whatever you shall ask of me, I will give it to you, up to half of my kingdom."
Now she went forth, and said to her mother, "What shall I ask?" And she said, "The head of John the Baptist."
And she came in immediately with haste to the king, and asked it, saying, "I desire that without delay you give me the head of John the Baptist on a platter."
And the king was exceedingly sorry; yet for his oath's sake, and for the sakes of those who sat with him, he would not reject her request.
Therefore the king immediately sent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought; and he went and beheaded him in the prison,
brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the damsel: And the damsel gave it to her mother.
And when his disciples heard of it, they came and took away his corpse, and laid it in a tomb.
