One day Jonathan the son of Saul said to the young man who carried his armour, Come, let us go over to the Philistines' garrison on the other side. But he didn't tell his father.
Saul stayed on the edge of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree in Migron. There were about six hundred men with him.
And Ahiah, the son of Ahitub, Ichabod's brother, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the LORD's priest in Shiloh, wearing an ephod. And the people knew not that Jonathan was gone.
On each side of the pass by which Jonathan intended to go over to the Philistines' garrison there was a rocky crag; one was called Bozez and the other Seneh.
One crag rose on the north opposite Michmash, and the other on the south opposite Geba.
Jonathan said to his armor bearer, "Come, let's go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised ones. Perhaps the LORD will work for us, since nothing prevents the LORD from delivering, whether by many or by a few."
His armor bearer answered him: »Do whatever you have in mind. Go ahead! I agree with you.«
Then Jonathan said, Now we will go over to these men and let them see us.
If they say to us, 'Stay there until we come to you,' then we will stay where we are and not go up to them.
But if they say, 'Come up to us,' then we will go up, for Yahweh has given them into our hand, and this will be the sign for us."
So they revealed themselves to the garrison of the Philistines, and the Philistines said, Look, the Hebrews are crawling out of the holes they were hiding in!
The men of the garrison shouted to Jonathan and his armour bearer, Come up to us and we will show you something! Jonathan said to his armour bearer, Come up after me, for the LORD has delivered them into the hand of Israel.
Jonathan climbed up on his hands and feet and his armour bearer followed, and the Philistines fell before Jonathan, and his armour bearer followed and killed behind him.
That first slaughter by Jonathan and his armour bearer killed about twenty men in an area of about half an acre.
