So they gave a dinner for Him there—Martha was serving, while Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with Him.
Then Mary, bringing a pound of pure oil of nard, very costly, anointed Jesus’ feet, and wiped His feet with her hair! And the house was filled with the fragrance of the oil.
Then one of His disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son (who was about to betray Him), said,
“Why wasn’t this oil sold for 300 denarii and given to the poor?”
(Now he didn’t say this because the poor mattered to him, but because he was a thief and had the money-box; and used to pilfer what was put in it.)
So Jesus said: “Let her be; she has performed this with a view to my burial.
For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.”
