⁴⁴ And Pilate marveled, if he were already dead; and calling to him the centurion, he asked him if he had been long dead.

³¹ The Jews therefore, since it was the preparation, that the bodies might not remain upon the cross on the sabbath (for that sabbath day was a great day), besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and they be taken away. ³² The soldiers came, therefore, and broke the legs of the first, and of the other who was crucified with him. ³³ But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was already dead, they broke not his legs. ³⁴ But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith there came out blood and water. ³⁵ And he that has seen has borne witness, and his witness is true, and he knows that he says what is true, that ye also might believe. ³⁶ For these things came to pass, that the scripture might be fulfilled: A bone of him shall not be broken. ³⁷ And again another scripture says: They shall look on him whom they pierced.
