¹ Then Job answered and said, ² I know it is so of a truth: but how should man be just with God? ³ If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand. ⁴ He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who has hardened himself against him, and has prospered? ⁵ Which removes the mountains, and they know not: which overturns them in his anger. ⁶ Which shakes the earth out of her place, and the pillars thereof tremble. ⁷ Which commands the sun, and it rises not; and seals up the stars. ⁸ Which alone spreads out the heavens, and treads on the waves of the sea. ⁹ Which makes Arcturus, Orion, and Pleiades, and the chambers of the south. ¹⁰ Which does great things past finding out; yes, and wonders without number. ¹¹ See, he goes by me, and I see him not: he passes on also, but I perceive him not. ¹² Behold, he takes away, who can hinder him? who will say to him, What do you? ¹³ If God will not withdraw his anger, the proud helpers do stoop under him. ¹⁴ How much less shall I answer him, and choose out my words to reason with him? ¹⁵ Whom, though I were righteous, yet would I not answer, but I would make supplication to my judge. ¹⁶ If I had called, and he had answered me; yet would I not believe that he had listened to my voice. ¹⁷ For he breaks me with a tempest, and multiplies my wounds without cause. ¹⁸ He will not suffer me to take my breath, but fills me with bitterness. ¹⁹ If I speak of strength, see, he is strong: and if of judgment, who shall set me a time to plead? ²⁰ If I justify myself, my own mouth shall condemn me: if I say, I am perfect, it shall also prove me perverse. ²¹ Though I were perfect, yet would I not know my soul: I would despise my life. ²² This is one thing, therefore I said it, He destroys the perfect and the wicked. ²³ If the whip slay suddenly, he will laugh at the trial of the innocent. ²⁴ The earth is given into the hand of the wicked: he covers the faces of the judges thereof; if not, where, and who is he? ²⁵ Now my days are swifter than a post: they flee away, they see no good. ²⁶ They are passed away as the swift ships: as the eagle that hastens to the prey. ²⁷ If I say, I will forget my complaint, I will leave off my heaviness, and comfort myself: ²⁸ I am afraid of all my sorrows, I know that you will not hold me innocent. ²⁹ If I be wicked, why then labor I in vain? ³⁰ If I wash myself with snow water, and make my hands never so clean; ³¹ Yet shall you plunge me in the ditch, and my own clothes shall abhor me. ³² For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together in judgment. ³³ Neither is there any judge between us, that might lay his hand on us both. ³⁴ Let him take his rod away from me, and let not his fear terrify me: ³⁵ Then would I speak, and not fear him; but it is not so with me.

⁴⁶ If they sin against you, (for there is no man that sins not,) and you be angry with them, and deliver them to the enemy, so that they carry them away captives to the land of the enemy, far or near;

¹⁷ Shall mortal man be more just than God? shall a man be more pure than his maker?

³ And does you open your eyes on such an one, and bring me into judgment with you? ⁴ Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.

⁴ How then can man be justified with God? or how can he be clean that is born of a woman?

² Then was kindled the wrath of Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram: against Job was his wrath kindled, because he justified himself rather than God.

⁹ I am clean without transgression, I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me.

⁵ For Job has said, I am righteous: and God has taken away my judgment.

³ If you, LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?

² And enter not into judgment with your servant: for in your sight shall no man living be justified.

²⁰ Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

²⁰ If I justify myself, my own mouth shall condemn me: if I say, I am perfect, it shall also prove me perverse.

³² For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him, and we should come together in judgment. ³³ Neither is there any judge between us, that might lay his hand on us both.

² I will say to God, Do not condemn me; show me why you contend with me.

³ Oh that I knew where I might find him! that I might come even to his seat! ⁴ I would order my cause before him, and fill my mouth with arguments. ⁵ I would know the words which he would answer me, and understand what he would say to me. ⁶ Will he plead against me with his great power? No; but he would put strength in me. ⁷ There the righteous might dispute with him; so should I be delivered for ever from my judge.

³⁵ Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that my adversary had written a book. ³⁶ Surely I would take it on my shoulder, and bind it as a crown to me. ³⁷ I would declare to him the number of my steps; as a prince would I go near to him.

¹³ Why do you strive against him? for he gives not account of any of his matters.

¹⁴ If he set his heart on man, if he gather to himself his spirit and his breath; ¹⁵ All flesh shall perish together, and man shall turn again to dust.

² Shall he that contends with the Almighty instruct him? he that reproves God, let him answer it.

¹² Who can understand his errors? cleanse you me from secret faults.

¹² For innumerable evils have compassed me about: my iniquities have taken hold on me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of my head: therefore my heart fails me.

¹⁵ For thus said the high and lofty One that inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. ¹⁶ For I will not contend for ever, neither will I be always wroth: for the spirit should fail before me, and the souls which I have made.

²⁰ No but, O man, who are you that reply against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why have you made me thus?

⁸ If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

²⁰ For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.

¹⁴ For I will at this time send all my plagues on your heart, and on your servants, and on your people; that you may know that there is none like me in all the earth. ¹⁵ For now I will stretch out my hand, that I may smite you and your people with pestilence; and you shall be cut off from the earth. ¹⁶ And in very deed for this cause have I raised you up, for to show in you my power; and that my name may be declared throughout all the earth. ¹⁷ As yet exalt you yourself against my people, that you will not let them go?

¹⁷ And I, behold, I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they shall follow them: and I will get me honor on Pharaoh, and on all his host, on his chariots, and on his horsemen. ¹⁸ And the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I have gotten me honor on Pharaoh, on his chariots, and on his horsemen.

¹² And, behold, God himself is with us for our captain, and his priests with sounding trumpets to cry alarm against you. O children of Israel, fight you not against the LORD God of your fathers; for you shall not prosper.

¹⁰ Then should I yet have comfort; yes, I would harden myself in sorrow: let him not spare; for I have not concealed the words of the Holy One.

¹⁹ If I speak of strength, see, he is strong: and if of judgment, who shall set me a time to plead?

⁶ And that he would show you the secrets of wisdom, that they are double to that which is! Know therefore that God exacts of you less than your iniquity deserves.

¹³ With him is wisdom and strength, he has counsel and understanding.

²³ He wanders abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knows that the day of darkness is ready at his hand. ²⁴ Trouble and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle. ²⁵ For he stretches out his hand against God, and strengthens himself against the Almighty. ²⁶ He runs on him, even on his neck, on the thick bosses of his bucklers: ²⁷ Because he covers his face with his fatness, and makes bulges of fat on his flanks.

⁵ Behold, God is mighty, and despises not any: he is mighty in strength and wisdom.

⁹ Have you an arm like God? or can you thunder with a voice like him?

²⁴ O LORD, how manifold are your works! in wisdom have you made them all: the earth is full of your riches.

⁵ To him that by wisdom made the heavens: for his mercy endures for ever.

¹⁴ Happy is the man that fears always: but he that hardens his heart shall fall into mischief.

¹ He, that being often reproved hardens his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.

²⁰ Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his:

³⁴ And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up my eyes to heaven, and my understanding returned to me, and I blessed the most High, and I praised and honored him that lives for ever, whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom is from generation to generation: ³⁵ And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he does according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say to him, What do you? ³⁶ At the same time my reason returned to me; and for the glory of my kingdom, my honor and brightness returned to me; and my counsellors and my lords sought to me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent majesty was added to me. ³⁷ Now I Nebuchadnezzar praise and extol and honor the King of heaven, all whose works are truth, and his ways judgment: and those that walk in pride he is able to abase.

²⁰ But when his heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him: ²¹ And he was driven from the sons of men; and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses: they fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; till he knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men, and that he appoints over it whomsoever he will. ²² And you his son, O Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, though you knew all this; ²³ But have lifted up yourself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before you, and you, and your lords, your wives, and your concubines, have drunk wine in them; and you have praised the gods of silver, and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand your breath is, and whose are all your ways, have you not glorified: ²⁴ Then was the part of the hand sent from him; and this writing was written. ²⁵ And this is the writing that was written, MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN. ²⁶ This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God has numbered your kingdom, and finished it. ²⁷ TEKEL; You are weighed in the balances, and are found wanting. ²⁸ PERES; Your kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians. ²⁹ Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with scarlet, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made a proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom. ³⁰ In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain.

³³ O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!

²² Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?

⁸ Wherein he has abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence;

¹⁹ And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,

¹⁰ To the intent that now to the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,

²⁰ Now to him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,

²⁴ Now to him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, ²⁵ To the only wise God our Savior, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.

⁵ And these are the names of the men that shall stand with you: of the tribe of Reuben; Elizur the son of Shedeur. ⁶ Of Simeon; Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai.

⁹ He puts forth his hand on the rock; he overturns the mountains by the roots.

² Therefore will not we fear, though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the middle of the sea;

⁸ The earth shook, the heavens also dropped at the presence of God: even Sinai itself was moved at the presence of God, the God of Israel.

⁶ You mountains, that you skipped like rams; and you little hills, like lambs?

¹² Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?

⁶ He stood, and measured the earth: he beheld, and drove asunder the nations; and the everlasting mountains were scattered, the perpetual hills did bow: his ways are everlasting.

¹⁰ The mountains saw you, and they trembled: the overflowing of the water passed by: the deep uttered his voice, and lifted up his hands on high.

⁷ Who are you, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel you shall become a plain: and he shall bring forth the headstone thereof with shoutings, crying, Grace, grace to it.

⁴ And his feet shall stand in that day on the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall split in the middle thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south. ⁵ And you shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach to Azal: yes, you shall flee, like as you fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the LORD my God shall come, and all the saints with you.

²¹ Jesus answered and said to them, Truly I say to you, If you have faith, and doubt not, you shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if you shall say to this mountain, Be you removed, and be you cast into the sea; it shall be done.

⁵¹ And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;

¹¹ And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.

² And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.

¹⁴ And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.

¹³ And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.

¹⁸ And there were voices, and thunders, and lightning; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were on the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great. ¹⁹ And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give to her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. ²⁰ And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.

⁸ He raises up the poor out of the dust, and lifts up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD's, and he has set the world on them.

¹¹ The pillars of heaven tremble and are astonished at his reproof.

⁴ Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if you have understanding. ⁵ Who has laid the measures thereof, if you know? or who has stretched the line on it? ⁶ Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof; ⁷ When the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

³ The earth and all the inhabitants thereof are dissolved: I bear up the pillars of it. Selah.

⁷ Tremble, you earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob;

¹⁹ And they shall go into the holes of the rocks, and into the caves of the earth, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he rises to shake terribly the earth.

²¹ To go into the clefts of the rocks, and into the tops of the ragged rocks, for fear of the LORD, and for the glory of his majesty, when he rises to shake terribly the earth.

¹³ Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of her place, in the wrath of the LORD of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger. ¹⁴ And it shall be as the chased roe, and as a sheep that no man takes up: they shall every man turn to his own people, and flee every one into his own land.

¹ Behold, the LORD makes the earth empty, and makes it waste, and turns it upside down, and scatters abroad the inhabitants thereof.

¹⁹ The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly. ²⁰ The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy on it; and it shall fall, and not rise again.

²⁴ I beheld the mountains, and, see, they trembled, and all the hills moved lightly.

¹⁰ The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining:

⁶ For thus said the LORD of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land;

²¹ Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I will shake the heavens and the earth;

²⁶ Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he has promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.

¹¹ And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.

²¹ And the LORD said to Moses, Stretch out your hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even darkness which may be felt. ²² And Moses stretched forth his hand toward heaven; and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days:

¹² Then spoke Joshua to the LORD in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel, Sun, stand you still on Gibeon; and you, Moon, in the valley of Ajalon.

⁷ He seals up the hand of every man; that all men may know his work.

¹² Have you commanded the morning since your days; and caused the dayspring to know his place; ¹³ That it might take hold of the ends of the earth, that the wicked might be shaken out of it? ¹⁴ It is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a garment. ¹⁵ And from the wicked their light is withheld, and the high arm shall be broken.

¹⁹ Where is the way where light dwells? and as for darkness, where is the place thereof, ²⁰ That you should take it to the bound thereof, and that you should know the paths to the house thereof?

¹⁰ For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.

⁷ And when I shall put you out, I will cover the heaven, and make the stars thereof dark; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give her light. ⁸ All the bright lights of heaven will I make dark over you, and set darkness on your land, said the Lord GOD.

³⁵ And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing: and he does according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say to him, What do you?

¹³ For, see, he that forms the mountains, and creates the wind, and declares to man what is his thought, that makes the morning darkness, and treads on the high places of the earth, The LORD, The God of hosts, is his name.

⁹ And it shall come to pass in that day, said the Lord GOD, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day:

²⁹ Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

²⁵ And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; ²⁶ Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.

⁶ And God said, Let there be a firmament in the middle of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. ⁷ And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.

¹⁸ Have you with him spread out the sky, which is strong, and as a molten looking glass?

¹¹ And said, Till now shall you come, but no further: and here shall your proud waves be stayed?

¹⁶ Have you entered into the springs of the sea? or have you walked in the search of the depth?

⁶ By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.

¹⁹ Your way is in the sea, and your path in the great waters, and your footsteps are not known.

³ The floods have lifted up, O LORD, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their waves. ⁴ The LORD on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, yes, than the mighty waves of the sea.

² Who cover yourself with light as with a garment: who stretch out the heavens like a curtain: ³ Who lays the beams of his chambers in the waters: who makes the clouds his chariot: who walks on the wings of the wind:

²² It is he that sits on the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretches out the heavens as a curtain, and spreads them out as a tent to dwell in:

⁵ Thus said God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which comes out of it; he that gives breath to the people on it, and spirit to them that walk therein:

²⁴ Thus said the LORD, your redeemer, and he that formed you from the womb, I am the LORD that makes all things; that stretches forth the heavens alone; that spreads abroad the earth by myself;

¹¹ Thus shall you say to them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens.

¹ The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, said the LORD, which stretches forth the heavens, and lays the foundation of the earth, and forms the spirit of man within him.

²⁵ And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went to them, walking on the sea. ²⁶ And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. ²⁷ But straightway Jesus spoke to them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. ²⁸ And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be you, bid me come to you on the water. ²⁹ And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. ³⁰ But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.

¹⁹ So when they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they see Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing near to the ship: and they were afraid.

¹⁶ And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.

⁹ Out of the south comes the whirlwind: and cold out of the north.

³¹ Can you bind the sweet influences of Pleiades, or loose the bands of Orion? ³² Can you bring forth Mazzaroth in his season? or can you guide Arcturus with his sons? ³³ Know you the ordinances of heaven? can you set the dominion thereof in the earth? ³⁴ Can you lift up your voice to the clouds, that abundance of waters may cover you? ³⁵ Can you send lightning, that they may go and say to you, Here we are? ³⁶ Who has put wisdom in the inward parts? or who has given understanding to the heart? ³⁷ Who can number the clouds in wisdom? or who can stay the bottles of heaven, ³⁸ When the dust grows into hardness, and the clods stuck fast together? ³⁹ Will you hunt the prey for the lion? or fill the appetite of the young lions, ⁴⁰ When they couch in their dens, and abide in the covert to lie in wait? ⁴¹ Who provides for the raven his food? when his young ones cry to God, they wander for lack of meat.

³ Who lays the beams of his chambers in the waters: who makes the clouds his chariot: who walks on the wings of the wind:

¹³ He waters the hills from his chambers: the earth is satisfied with the fruit of your works.

⁴ He tells the number of the stars; he calls them all by their names.

⁸ Seek him that makes the seven stars and Orion, and turns the shadow of death into the morning, and makes the day dark with night: that calls for the waters of the sea, and pours them out on the face of the earth: The LORD is his name:

¹³ And from there we fetched a compass, and came to Rhegium: and after one day the south wind blew, and we came the next day to Puteoli:

¹¹ Who is like to you, O LORD, among the gods? who is like you, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?

⁹ Which does great things and unsearchable; marvelous things without number:

¹² He divides the sea with his power, and by his understanding he smites through the proud. ¹³ By his spirit he has garnished the heavens; his hand has formed the crooked serpent. ¹⁴ See, these are parts of his ways: but how little a portion is heard of him? but the thunder of his power who can understand?

²³ Touching the Almighty, we cannot find him out: he is excellent in power, and in judgment, and in plenty of justice: he will not afflict.

¹⁵ My mouth shall show forth your righteousness and your salvation all the day; for I know not the numbers thereof.

¹⁸ Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, who only does wondrous things.

⁴ To him who alone does great wonders: for his mercy endures for ever.

¹¹ He has made every thing beautiful in his time: also he has set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God makes from the beginning to the end.

²⁶ Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who has created these things, that brings out their host by number: he calls them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one fails. ²⁷ Why say you, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, My way is hid from the LORD, and my judgment is passed over from my God? ²⁸ Have you not known? have you not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, faints not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.

² I thought it good to show the signs and wonders that the high God has worked toward me. ³ How great are his signs! and how mighty are his wonders! his kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion is from generation to generation.

⁸ Behold, I go forward, but he is not there; and backward, but I cannot perceive him: ⁹ On the left hand, where he does work, but I cannot behold him: he hides himself on the right hand, that I cannot see him:

¹⁴ Although you say you shall not see him, yet judgment is before him; therefore trust you in him.

¹⁶ Who only has immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach to; whom no man has seen, nor can see: to whom be honor and power everlasting. Amen.

¹⁰ If he cut off, and shut up, or gather together, then who can hinder him?

¹³ But he is in one mind, and who can turn him? and what his soul desires, even that he does.

²⁹ When he gives quietness, who then can make trouble? and when he hides his face, who then can behold him? whether it be done against a nation, or against a man only:

⁹ Woe to him that strives with his Maker! Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him that fashions it, What make you? or your work, He has no hands?

⁶ O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? said the LORD. Behold, as the clay is in the potter's hand, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel.

²⁶ Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in your sight.

¹⁵ Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with my own? Is your eye evil, because I am good?

¹⁸ Therefore has he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardens. ¹⁹ You will say then to me, Why does he yet find fault? For who has resisted his will? ²⁰ No but, O man, who are you that reply against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why have you made me thus?

³⁴ For who has known the mind of the Lord? or who has been his counselor?

¹¹ In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who works all things after the counsel of his own will:

¹² He divides the sea with his power, and by his understanding he smites through the proud.

⁹ Have you an arm like God? or can you thunder with a voice like him? ¹⁰ Deck yourself now with majesty and excellency; and array yourself with glory and beauty. ¹¹ Cast abroad the rage of your wrath: and behold every one that is proud, and abase him.

¹⁰ You have broken Rahab in pieces, as one that is slain; you have scattered your enemies with your strong arm.

⁷ For the Egyptians shall help in vain, and to no purpose: therefore have I cried concerning this, Their strength is to sit still.

² Yet he also is wise, and will bring evil, and will not call back his words: but will arise against the house of the evildoers, and against the help of them that work iniquity. ³ Now the Egyptians are men, and not God; and their horses flesh, and not spirit. When the LORD shall stretch out his hand, both he that helps shall fall, and he that is helped shall fall down, and they all shall fail together.

⁹ Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of the LORD; awake, as in the ancient days, in the generations of old. Are you not it that has cut Rahab, and wounded the dragon?

⁶ But he gives more grace. Why he said, God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. ⁷ Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

²⁷ But will God indeed dwell on the earth? behold, the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain you; how much less this house that I have built?

¹⁹ How much less in them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, which are crushed before the moth?

³ If he will contend with him, he cannot answer him one of a thousand.

⁴ For you have said, My doctrine is pure, and I am clean in your eyes. ⁵ But oh that God would speak, and open his lips against you;

⁴ I would order my cause before him, and fill my mouth with arguments.

⁷ There the righteous might dispute with him; so should I be delivered for ever from my judge.

⁶ How much less man, that is a worm? and the son of man, which is a worm?

⁵ If you can answer me, set your words in order before me, stand up.

³⁸ What prayer and supplication soever be made by any man, or by all your people Israel, which shall know every man the plague of his own heart, and spread forth his hands toward this house: ³⁹ Then hear you in heaven your dwelling place, and forgive, and do, and give to every man according to his ways, whose heart you know; (for you, even you only, know the hearts of all the children of men;)

¹³ And prayed to him: and he was entreated of him, and heard his supplication, and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that the LORD he was God.

⁸ I would seek to God, and to God would I commit my cause:

⁵ If you would seek to God betimes, and make your supplication to the Almighty;

¹⁵ If I be wicked, woe to me; and if I be righteous, yet will I not lift up my head. I am full of confusion; therefore see you my affliction;

²⁷ You shall make your prayer to him, and he shall hear you, and you shall pay your vows.

³¹ Surely it is meet to be said to God, I have borne chastisement, I will not offend any more: ³² That which I see not teach you me: if I have done iniquity, I will do no more.

⁹ They shall come with weeping, and with supplications will I lead them: I will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters in a straight way, wherein they shall not stumble: for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my firstborn.

³ And I set my face to the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes:

¹⁸ O my God, incline your ear, and hear; open your eyes, and behold our desolations, and the city which is called by your name: for we do not present our supplications before you for our righteousnesses, but for your great mercies.

⁴ For I know nothing by myself; yet am I not hereby justified: but he that judges me is the Lord.

²³ Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judges righteously:

⁹ And Moses spoke so to the children of Israel: but they listened not to Moses for anguish of spirit, and for cruel bondage.

¹³ And Gideon said to him, Oh my Lord, if the LORD be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the LORD bring us up from Egypt? but now the LORD has forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.

²⁴ If I laughed on them, they believed it not; and the light of my countenance they cast not down.

⁶ In my distress I called on the LORD, and cried to my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears.

¹⁸ If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me: ¹⁹ But truly God has heard me; he has attended to the voice of my prayer. ²⁰ Blessed be God, which has not turned away my prayer, nor his mercy from me.

¹ I love the LORD, because he has heard my voice and my supplications. ² Because he has inclined his ear to me, therefore will I call on him as long as I live.

¹ When the LORD turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream.

⁴¹ And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said to them, Have you here any meat?

¹⁴ And when she knew Peter's voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Peter stood before the gate. ¹⁵ And they said to her, You are mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel. ¹⁶ But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished.

¹⁴ And there came a messenger to Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them: ¹⁵ And the Sabeans fell on them, and took them away; yes, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell you. ¹⁶ While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and has burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell you. ¹⁷ While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell on the camels, and have carried them away, yes, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell you. ¹⁸ While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Your sons and your daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house: ¹⁹ And, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell on the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell you.

³ And the LORD said to Satan, Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that fears God, and eschews evil? and still he holds fast his integrity, although you moved me against him, to destroy him without cause.

⁷ So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot to his crown.

¹³ So they sat down with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spoke a word to him: for they saw that his grief was very great.

¹² I was at ease, but he has broken me asunder: he has also taken me by my neck, and shaken me to pieces, and set me up for his mark.

¹⁴ He breaks me with breach on breach, he runs on me like a giant.

¹⁷ Not for any injustice in my hands: also my prayer is pure.

²² You lift me up to the wind; you cause me to ride on it, and dissolve my substance.

⁶ Should I lie against my right? my wound is incurable without transgression.

³ Yes, let none that wait on you be ashamed: let them be ashamed which transgress without cause.

⁵ The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars; yes, the LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon.

⁷ Deep calls to deep at the noise of your waterspouts: all your waves and your billows are gone over me.

¹⁵ So persecute them with your tempest, and make them afraid with your storm.

¹⁷ Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place.

¹⁹ Behold, a whirlwind of the LORD is gone forth in fury, even a grievous whirlwind: it shall fall grievously on the head of the wicked.

¹³ Therefore thus said the Lord GOD; I will even rend it with a stormy wind in my fury; and there shall be an overflowing shower in my anger, and great hailstones in my fury to consume it.

²⁷ And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

²⁰ A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment to victory.

³ Jesus answered, Neither has this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.

²⁵ But this comes to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.

²⁰ Why is light given to him that is in misery, and life to the bitter in soul;

¹⁹ How long will you not depart from me, nor let me alone till I swallow down my spittle?

² As God lives, who has taken away my judgment; and the Almighty, who has vexed my soul;

¹³ O spare me, that I may recover strength, before I go hence, and be no more.

⁷ Your wrath lies hard on me, and you have afflicted me with all your waves. Selah.

¹⁵ I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up: while I suffer your terrors I am distracted. ¹⁶ Your fierce wrath goes over me; your terrors have cut me off. ¹⁷ They came round about me daily like water; they compassed me about together. ¹⁸ Lover and friend have you put far from me, and my acquaintance into darkness.

³ Surely against me is he turned; he turns his hand against me all the day.

¹⁵ He has filled me with bitterness, he has made me drunken with wormwood.

¹⁸ And I said, My strength and my hope is perished from the LORD: ¹⁹ Remembering my affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall.

¹¹ Now no chastening for the present seems to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to them which are exercised thereby.

⁴ He is wise in heart, and mighty in strength: who has hardened himself against him, and has prospered?

³⁵ Oh that one would hear me! behold, my desire is, that the Almighty would answer me, and that my adversary had written a book.

⁵ If you can answer me, set your words in order before me, stand up. ⁶ Behold, I am according to your wish in God's stead: I also am formed out of the clay. ⁷ Behold, my terror shall not make you afraid, neither shall my hand be heavy on you.

¹⁷ But you have fulfilled the judgment of the wicked: judgment and justice take hold on you. ¹⁸ Because there is wrath, beware lest he take you away with his stroke: then a great ransom cannot deliver you. ¹⁹ Will he esteem your riches? no, not gold, nor all the forces of strength.

⁹ Have you an arm like God? or can you thunder with a voice like him? ¹⁰ Deck yourself now with majesty and excellency; and array yourself with glory and beauty.

¹¹ God has spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongs to God.

¹³ And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For your is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

²⁵ Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

¹ There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.

² I know it is so of a truth: but how should man be just with God?

⁵ For your mouth utters your iniquity, and you choose the tongue of the crafty. ⁶ Your own mouth comdemns you, and not I: yes, your own lips testify against you.

¹ So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes. ² Then was kindled the wrath of Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the kindred of Ram: against Job was his wrath kindled, because he justified himself rather than God.

⁸ Surely you have spoken in my hearing, and I have heard the voice of your words, saying, ⁹ I am clean without transgression, I am innocent; neither is there iniquity in me. ¹⁰ Behold, he finds occasions against me, he counts me for his enemy, ¹¹ He puts my feet in the stocks, he marks all my paths. ¹² Behold, in this you are not just: I will answer you, that God is greater than man. ¹³ Why do you strive against him? for he gives not account of any of his matters.

³⁵ Job has spoken without knowledge, and his words were without wisdom.

¹⁶ Therefore does Job open his mouth in vain; he multiplies words without knowledge.

¹⁹ In the multitude of words there wants not sin: but he that refrains his lips is wise.

²⁰ He that has a fraudulent heart finds no good: and he that has a perverse tongue falls into mischief.

⁵ Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the middle of a people of unclean lips: for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.

³⁶ But I say to you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. ³⁷ For by your words you shall be justified, and by your words you shall be condemned.

²⁹ But he, willing to justify himself, said to Jesus, And who is my neighbor?

¹⁵ And he said to them, You are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knows your hearts: for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God.

¹² Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. ¹³ Brothers, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth to those things which are before, ¹⁴ I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. ¹⁵ Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing you be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this to you.

⁵ Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw yourself.

² For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.

¹⁵ So that my soul chooses strangling, and death rather than my life. ¹⁶ I loathe it; I would not live always: let me alone; for my days are vanity.

²¹ And why do you not pardon my transgression, and take away my iniquity? for now shall I sleep in the dust; and you shall seek me in the morning, but I shall not be.

²³ Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: ²⁴ And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

²⁶ He that trusts in his own heart is a fool: but whoever walks wisely, he shall be delivered.

⁹ The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? ¹⁰ I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.

⁸ Your hands have made me and fashioned me together round about; yet you do destroy me.

¹ For all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: no man knows either love or hatred by all that is before them. ² All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrifices, and to him that sacrifices not: as is the good, so is the sinner; and he that swears, as he that fears an oath. ³ This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event to all: yes, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.

³ And say to the land of Israel, Thus said the LORD; Behold, I am against you, and will draw forth my sword out of his sheath, and will cut off from you the righteous and the wicked. ⁴ Seeing then that I will cut off from you the righteous and the wicked, therefore shall my sword go forth out of his sheath against all flesh from the south to the north:

² And Jesus answering said to them, Suppose you that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things? ³ I tell you, No: but, except you repent, you shall all likewise perish. ⁴ Or those eighteen, on whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think you that they were sinners above all men that dwelled in Jerusalem?

¹⁵ Now therefore that I am come to speak of this thing to my lord the king, it is because the people have made me afraid: and your handmaid said, I will now speak to the king; it may be that the king will perform the request of his handmaid.

¹⁷ Then your handmaid said, The word of my lord the king shall now be comfortable: for as an angel of God, so is my lord the king to discern good and bad: therefore the LORD your God will be with you.

¹³ And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house:

⁷ Remember, I pray you, who ever perished, being innocent? or where were the righteous cut off?

²⁰ Behold, God will not cast away a perfect man, neither will he help the evil doers:

¹² Men groan from out of the city, and the soul of the wounded cries out: yet God lays not folly to them.

²² Yes, for your sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter.

¹⁹ Or if I send a pestilence into that land, and pour out my fury on it in blood, to cut off from it man and beast: ²⁰ Though Noah, Daniel, and Job were in it, as I live, said the Lord GOD, they shall deliver neither son nor daughter; they shall but deliver their own souls by their righteousness. ²¹ For thus said the Lord GOD; How much more when I send my four sore judgments on Jerusalem, the sword, and the famine, and the noisome beast, and the pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast?

¹³ Because it is a trial, and what if the sword scorn even the rod? it shall be no more, said the Lord GOD.

³⁶ And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yes, moreover of bonds and imprisonment: ³⁷ They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented;

³⁰ And David went up by the ascent of mount Olivet, and wept as he went up, and had his head covered, and he went barefoot: and all the people that was with him covered every man his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up.

⁴ But the king covered his face, and the king cried with a loud voice, O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son!

¹² And Mordecai came again to the king's gate. But Haman hurried to his house mourning, and having his head covered.

⁸ Then the king returned out of the palace garden into the place of the banquet of wine; and Haman was fallen on the bed where on Esther was. Then said the king, Will he force the queen also before me in the house? As the word went out of king's mouth, they covered Haman's face.

³ Is it good to you that you should oppress, that you should despise the work of your hands, and shine on the counsel of the wicked?

⁶ The tabernacles of robbers prosper, and they that provoke God are secure; into whose hand God brings abundantly. ⁷ But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach you; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell you: ⁸ Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach you: and the fishes of the sea shall declare to you. ⁹ Who knows not in all these that the hand of the LORD has worked this? ¹⁰ In whose hand is the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.

¹⁷ He leads counsellors away spoiled, and makes the judges fools.

¹¹ God has delivered me to the ungodly, and turned me over into the hands of the wicked.

⁷ Why do the wicked live, become old, yes, are mighty in power? ⁸ Their seed is established in their sight with them, and their offspring before their eyes. ⁹ Their houses are safe from fear, neither is the rod of God on them. ¹⁰ Their bull engenders, and fails not; their cow calves, and casts not her calf. ¹¹ They send forth their little ones like a flock, and their children dance. ¹² They take the tambourine and harp, and rejoice at the sound of the organ. ¹³ They spend their days in wealth, and in a moment go down to the grave. ¹⁴ Therefore they say to God, Depart from us; for we desire not the knowledge of your ways. ¹⁵ What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? and what profit should we have, if we pray to him?

²⁵ And if it be not so now, who will make me a liar, and make my speech nothing worth?

¹⁴ From men which are your hand, O LORD, from men of the world, which have their portion in this life, and whose belly you fill with your hid treasure: they are full of children, and leave the rest of their substance to their babes.

³ For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. ⁴ For there are no bands in their death: but their strength is firm. ⁵ They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men. ⁶ Therefore pride compasses them about as a chain; violence covers them as a garment. ⁷ Their eyes stand out with fatness: they have more than heart could wish.

¹ Righteous are you, O LORD, when I plead with you: yet let me talk with you of your judgments: Why does the way of the wicked prosper? why are all they happy that deal very treacherously? ² You have planted them, yes, they have taken root: they grow, yes, they bring forth fruit: you are near in their mouth, and far from their reins.

⁴ Because the ground is beat down, for there was no rain in the earth, the plowmen were ashamed, they covered their heads.

¹⁷ This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High rules in the kingdom of men, and gives it to whomsoever he will, and sets up over it the basest of men.

¹⁸ O you king, the most high God gave Nebuchadnezzar your father a kingdom, and majesty, and glory, and honor: ¹⁹ And for the majesty that he gave him, all people, nations, and languages, trembled and feared before him: whom he would he slew; and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he set up; and whom he would he put down. ²⁰ But when his heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him: ²¹ And he was driven from the sons of men; and his heart was made like the beasts, and his dwelling was with the wild asses: they fed him with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; till he knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men, and that he appoints over it whomsoever he will.

⁷ After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and broke in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns. ⁸ I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things. ⁹ I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire. ¹⁰ A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered to him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened. ¹¹ I beheld then because of the voice of the great words which the horn spoke: I beheld even till the beast was slain, and his body destroyed, and given to the burning flame. ¹² As concerning the rest of the beasts, they had their dominion taken away: yet their lives were prolonged for a season and time. ¹³ I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. ¹⁴ And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed. ¹⁵ I Daniel was grieved in my spirit in the middle of my body, and the visions of my head troubled me. ¹⁶ I came near to one of them that stood by, and asked him the truth of all this. So he told me, and made me know the interpretation of the things. ¹⁷ These great beasts, which are four, are four kings, which shall arise out of the earth. ¹⁸ But the saints of the most High shall take the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, even for ever and ever. ¹⁹ Then I would know the truth of the fourth beast, which was diverse from all the others, exceeding dreadful, whose teeth were of iron, and his nails of brass; which devoured, broke in pieces, and stamped the residue with his feet; ²⁰ And of the ten horns that were in his head, and of the other which came up, and before whom three fell; even of that horn that had eyes, and a mouth that spoke very great things, whose look was more stout than his fellows. ²¹ I beheld, and the same horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against them; ²² Until the Ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of the most High; and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom. ²³ Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom on earth, which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces. ²⁴ And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings. ²⁵ And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time. ²⁶ But the judgment shall sit, and they shall take away his dominion, to consume and to destroy it to the end. ²⁷ And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him. ²⁸ Till now is the end of the matter. As for me Daniel, my cogitations much troubled me, and my countenance changed in me: but I kept the matter in my heart.

¹⁴ And make men as the fishes of the sea, as the creeping things, that have no ruler over them? ¹⁵ They take up all of them with the angle, they catch them in their net, and gather them in their drag: therefore they rejoice and are glad. ¹⁶ Therefore they sacrifice to their net, and burn incense to their drag; because by them their portion is fat, and their meat plenteous. ¹⁷ Shall they therefore empty their net, and not spare continually to slay the nations?

¹⁴ So the posts that rode on mules and camels went out, being hastened and pressed on by the king's commandment. And the decree was given at Shushan the palace.

⁶ My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle, and are spent without hope. ⁷ O remember that my life is wind: my eye shall no more see good.

⁵ Behold, you have made my days as an handbreadth; and my age is as nothing before you: truly every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah.

¹¹ When you with rebukes do correct man for iniquity, you make his beauty to consume away like a moth: surely every man is vanity. Selah.

⁴⁷ Remember how short my time is: why have you made all men in vain?

⁹ For all our days are passed away in your wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told. ¹⁰ The days of our years are three score years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.

¹⁴ Whereas you know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away.

²³ Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided: they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.

²⁷ Does the eagle mount up at your command, and make her nest on high? ²⁸ She dwells and stays on the rock, on the crag of the rock, and the strong place. ²⁹ From there she seeks the prey, and her eyes behold afar off. ³⁰ Her young ones also suck up blood: and where the slain are, there is she.

⁵ Will you set your eyes on that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.

² That sends ambassadors by the sea, even in vessels of bulrushes on the waters, saying, Go, you swift messengers, to a nation scattered and peeled, to a people terrible from their beginning till now; a nation meted out and trodden down, whose land the rivers have spoiled!

¹³ Behold, he shall come up as clouds, and his chariots shall be as a whirlwind: his horses are swifter than eagles. Woe to us! for we are spoiled.

¹⁹ Our persecutors are swifter than the eagles of the heaven: they pursued us on the mountains, they laid wait for us in the wilderness.

⁸ Their horses also are swifter than the leopards, and are more fierce than the evening wolves: and their horsemen shall spread themselves, and their horsemen shall come from far; they shall fly as the eagle that hastens to eat.

¹¹ Therefore I will not refrain my mouth; I will speak in the anguish of my spirit; I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.

¹³ When I say, My bed shall comfort me, my couch shall ease my complaints;

² In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord: my sore ran in the night, and ceased not: my soul refused to be comforted. ³ I remembered God, and was troubled: I complained, and my spirit was overwhelmed. Selah.

¹⁸ When I would comfort myself against sorrow, my heart is faint in me.

⁷ You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that takes his name in vain.

²⁵ For the thing which I greatly feared is come on me, and that which I was afraid of is come to me.

²⁰ If I justify myself, my own mouth shall condemn me: if I say, I am perfect, it shall also prove me perverse. ²¹ Though I were perfect, yet would I not know my soul: I would despise my life.

¹⁴ If I sin, then you mark me, and you will not acquit me from my iniquity.

¹⁶ For now you number my steps: do you not watch over my sin?

⁶ Even when I remember I am afraid, and trembling takes hold on my flesh.

¹⁵ I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up: while I suffer your terrors I am distracted. ¹⁶ Your fierce wrath goes over me; your terrors have cut me off.

¹²⁰ My flesh trembles for fear of you; and I am afraid of your judgments.

²² This is one thing, therefore I said it, He destroys the perfect and the wicked.

⁷ You know that I am not wicked; and there is none that can deliver out of your hand.

¹⁴ If I sin, then you mark me, and you will not acquit me from my iniquity. ¹⁵ If I be wicked, woe to me; and if I be righteous, yet will I not lift up my head. I am full of confusion; therefore see you my affliction; ¹⁶ For it increases. You hunt me as a fierce lion: and again you show yourself marvelous on me. ¹⁷ You renew your witnesses against me, and increase your indignation on me; changes and war are against me.

¹⁶ See, their good is not in their hand: the counsel of the wicked is far from me. ¹⁷ How oft is the candle of the wicked put out! and how oft comes their destruction on them! God distributes sorrows in his anger.

²⁷ Behold, I know your thoughts, and the devices which you wrongfully imagine against me.

⁵ Is not your wickedness great? and your iniquities infinite? ⁶ For you have taken a pledge from your brother for nothing, and stripped the naked of their clothing. ⁷ You have not given water to the weary to drink, and you have withheld bread from the hungry. ⁸ But as for the mighty man, he had the earth; and the honorable man dwelled in it. ⁹ You have sent widows away empty, and the arms of the fatherless have been broken. ¹⁰ Therefore snares are round about you, and sudden fear troubles you; ¹¹ Or darkness, that you can not see; and abundance of waters cover you. ¹² Is not God in the height of heaven? and behold the height of the stars, how high they are! ¹³ And you say, How does God know? can he judge through the dark cloud? ¹⁴ Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he sees not; and he walks in the circuit of heaven. ¹⁵ Have you marked the old way which wicked men have trodden? ¹⁶ Which were cut down out of time, whose foundation was overflowed with a flood: ¹⁷ Which said to God, Depart from us: and what can the Almighty do for them? ¹⁸ Yet he filled their houses with good things: but the counsel of the wicked is far from me. ¹⁹ The righteous see it, and are glad: and the innocent laugh them to scorn. ²⁰ Whereas our substance is not cut down, but the remnant of them the fire consumes. ²¹ Acquaint now yourself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come to you. ²² Receive, I pray you, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in your heart. ²³ If you return to the Almighty, you shall be built up, you shall put away iniquity far from your tabernacles. ²⁴ Then shall you lay up gold as dust, and the gold of Ophir as the stones of the brooks. ²⁵ Yes, the Almighty shall be your defense, and you shall have plenty of silver. ²⁶ For then shall you have your delight in the Almighty, and shall lift up your face to God. ²⁷ You shall make your prayer to him, and he shall hear you, and you shall pay your vows. ²⁸ You shall also decree a thing, and it shall be established to you: and the light shall shine on your ways. ²⁹ When men are cast down, then you shall say, There is lifting up; and he shall save the humble person. ³⁰ He shall deliver the island of the innocent: and it is delivered by the pureness of your hands.

³³ The LORD will not leave him in his hand, nor condemn him when he is judged.

¹³ Truly I have cleansed my heart in vain, and washed my hands in innocence.

³⁵ Yet you say, Because I am innocent, surely his anger shall turn from me. Behold, I will plead with you, because you say, I have not sinned.

⁷ If my step has turned out of the way, and my heart walked after my eyes, and if any blot has stuck to my hands;

⁶ I will wash my hands in innocence: so will I compass your altar, O LORD:

¹³ He that covers his sins shall not prosper: but whoever confesses and forsakes them shall have mercy.

¹⁶ Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil; ¹⁷ Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow. ¹⁸ Come now, and let us reason together, said the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

²² For though you wash you with nitre, and take you much soap, yet your iniquity is marked before me, said the Lord GOD.

¹⁴ O Jerusalem, wash your heart from wickedness, that you may be saved. How long shall your vain thoughts lodge within you?

³ For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves to the righteousness of God.

⁶ Your own mouth comdemns you, and not I: yes, your own lips testify against you.

⁶ Their webs shall not become garments, neither shall they cover themselves with their works: their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands.

⁶ But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

⁸ Yes doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, ⁹ And be found in him, not having my own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

¹⁹ God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: has he said, and shall he not do it? or has he spoken, and shall he not make it good?

⁷ But the LORD said to Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD sees not as man sees; for man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.

¹⁸ Behold now, I have ordered my cause; I know that I shall be justified. ¹⁹ Who is he that will plead with me? for now, if I hold my tongue, I shall give up the ghost. ²⁰ Only do not two things to me: then will I not hide myself from you. ²¹ Withdraw your hand far from me: and let not your dread make me afraid. ²² Then call you, and I will answer: or let me speak, and answer you me. ²³ How many are my iniquities and sins? make me to know my transgression and my sin.

¹² Behold, in this you are not just: I will answer you, that God is greater than man.

⁵ Look to the heavens, and see; and behold the clouds which are higher than you. ⁶ If you sin, what do you against him? or if your transgressions be multiplied, what do you to him? ⁷ If you be righteous, what give you him? or what receives he of your hand?

¹⁰ That which has been is named already, and it is known that it is man: neither may he contend with him that is mightier than he.

¹⁹ Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the swelling of Jordan against the habitation of the strong: but I will suddenly make him run away from her: and who is a chosen man, that I may appoint over her? for who is like me? and who will appoint me the time? and who is that shepherd that will stand before me?

²⁵ If one man sin against another, the judge shall judge him: but if a man sin against the LORD, who shall entreat for him? Notwithstanding they listened not to the voice of their father, because the LORD would slay them.

¹⁶ Then came there two women, that were harlots, to the king, and stood before him. ¹⁷ And the one woman said, O my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house. ¹⁸ And it came to pass the third day after that I was delivered, that this woman was delivered also: and we were together; there was no stranger with us in the house, save we two in the house. ¹⁹ And this woman's child died in the night; because she overlaid it. ²⁰ And she arose at midnight, and took my son from beside me, while your handmaid slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom. ²¹ And when I rose in the morning to give my child suck, behold, it was dead: but when I had considered it in the morning, behold, it was not my son, which I did bear. ²² And the other woman said, No; but the living is my son, and the dead is your son. And this said, No; but the dead is your son, and the living is my son. Thus they spoke before the king. ²³ Then said the king, The one said, This is my son that lives, and your son is the dead: and the other said, No; but your son is the dead, and my son is the living. ²⁴ And the king said, Bring me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king. ²⁵ And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other. ²⁶ Then spoke the woman whose the living child was to the king, for her bowels yearned on her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither my nor yours, but divide it. ²⁷ Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she is the mother thereof. ²⁸ And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do judgment.

²³ Therefore he said that he would destroy them, had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach, to turn away his wrath, lest he should destroy them.

¹ My little children, these things write I to you, that you sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: ² And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for our's only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

¹¹ Shall not his excellency make you afraid? and his dread fall on you?

²⁰ Only do not two things to me: then will I not hide myself from you. ²¹ Withdraw your hand far from me: and let not your dread make me afraid. ²² Then call you, and I will answer: or let me speak, and answer you me.

¹⁵ Therefore am I troubled at his presence: when I consider, I am afraid of him.

² Oh that I were as in months past, as in the days when God preserved me; ³ When his candle shined on my head, and when by his light I walked through darkness; ⁴ As I was in the days of my youth, when the secret of God was on my tabernacle; ⁵ When the Almighty was yet with me, when my children were about me; ⁶ When I washed my steps with butter, and the rock poured me out rivers of oil; ⁷ When I went out to the gate through the city, when I prepared my seat in the street! ⁸ The young men saw me, and hid themselves: and the aged arose, and stood up. ⁹ The princes refrained talking, and laid their hand on their mouth. ¹⁰ The nobles held their peace, and their tongue stuck to the roof of their mouth. ¹¹ When the ear heard me, then it blessed me; and when the eye saw me, it gave witness to me: ¹² Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him. ¹³ The blessing of him that was ready to perish came on me: and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy. ¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my judgment was as a robe and a diadem. ¹⁵ I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame. ¹⁶ I was a father to the poor: and the cause which I knew not I searched out. ¹⁷ And I broke the jaws of the wicked, and plucked the spoil out of his teeth. ¹⁸ Then I said, I shall die in my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the sand. ¹⁹ My root was spread out by the waters, and the dew lay all night on my branch. ²⁰ My glory was fresh in me, and my bow was renewed in my hand. ²¹ To me men gave ear, and waited, and kept silence at my counsel. ²² After my words they spoke not again; and my speech dropped on them. ²³ And they waited for me as for the rain; and they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain. ²⁴ If I laughed on them, they believed it not; and the light of my countenance they cast not down. ²⁵ I chose out their way, and sat chief, and dwelled as a king in the army, as one that comforts the mourners.

²³ For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.

⁷ Behold, my terror shall not make you afraid, neither shall my hand be heavy on you.

¹ At this also my heart trembles, and is moved out of his place.

¹⁰ Remove your stroke away from me: I am consumed by the blow of your hand.

¹¹ Who knows the power of your anger? even according to your fear, so is your wrath.
