¹ My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with you. ² Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of your eye. ³ Bind them on your fingers, write them on the table of your heart. ⁴ Say to wisdom, You are my sister; and call understanding your kinswoman: ⁵ That they may keep you from the strange woman, from the stranger which flatters with her words. ⁶ For at the window of my house I looked through my casement, ⁷ And beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding, ⁸ Passing through the street near her corner; and he went the way to her house, ⁹ In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night: ¹⁰ And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtle of heart. ¹¹ (She is loud and stubborn; her feet abide not in her house: ¹² Now is she without, now in the streets, and lies in wait at every corner.) ¹³ So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said to him, ¹⁴ I have peace offerings with me; this day have I paid my vows. ¹⁵ Therefore came I forth to meet you, diligently to seek your face, and I have found you. ¹⁶ I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt. ¹⁷ I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. ¹⁸ Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning: let us solace ourselves with loves. ¹⁹ For the manager is not at home, he is gone a long journey: ²⁰ He has taken a bag of money with him, and will come home at the day appointed. ²¹ With her much fair speech she caused him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forced him. ²² He goes after her straightway, as an ox goes to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks; ²³ Till a dart strike through his liver; as a bird hastens to the snare, and knows not that it is for his life. ²⁴ Listen to me now therefore, O you children, and attend to the words of my mouth. ²⁵ Let not your heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths. ²⁶ For she has cast down many wounded: yes, many strong men have been slain by her. ²⁷ Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death.

²⁸ And a curse, if you will not obey the commandments of the LORD your God, but turn aside out of the way which I command you this day, to go after other gods, which you have not known.

²² Receive, I pray you, the law from his mouth, and lay up his words in your heart.

⁸ My son, hear the instruction of your father, and forsake not the law of your mother:

¹ My son, if you will receive my words, and hide my commandments with you; ² So that you incline your ear to wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding; ³ Yes, if you cry after knowledge, and lift up your voice for understanding; ⁴ If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hid treasures; ⁵ Then shall you understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. ⁶ For the LORD gives wisdom: out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding. ⁷ He lays up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly.

¹ My son, forget not my law; but let your heart keep my commandments:

¹⁴ Wise men lay up knowledge: but the mouth of the foolish is near destruction.

¹⁵ But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.

²⁸ But he said, Yes rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

²³ Jesus answered and said to him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come to him, and make our stayed with him.

²⁰ Remember the word that I said to you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.

³ Blessed is he that reads, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand.

⁹ Then said he to me, See you do it not: for I am your fellow servant, and of your brothers the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God.

⁵ You shall therefore keep my statutes, and my judgments: which if a man do, he shall live in them: I am the LORD.

¹⁰ He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness; he led him about, he instructed him, he kept him as the apple of his eye.

⁸ Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of your wings,

⁴ He taught me also, and said to me, Let your heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.

¹³ Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is your life.

³ Incline your ear, and come to me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.

⁸ For thus said the LORD of hosts; After the glory has he sent me to the nations which spoiled you: for he that touches you touches the apple of his eye.

⁴⁹ For I have not spoken of myself; but the Father which sent me, he gave me a commandment, what I should say, and what I should speak. ⁵⁰ And I know that his commandment is life everlasting: whatever I speak therefore, even as the Father said to me, so I speak.

²¹ He that has my commandments, and keeps them, he it is that loves me: and he that loves me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

¹⁴ You are my friends, if you do whatever I command you.

³ And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. ⁴ He that said, I know him, and keeps not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

¹ Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loves him that begat loves him also that is begotten of him. ² By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. ³ For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.

¹⁴ Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.

⁸ And you shall bind them for a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. ⁹ And you shall write them on the posts of your house, and on your gates.

¹⁸ Therefore shall you lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign on your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes. ¹⁹ And you shall teach them your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. ²⁰ And you shall write them on the door posts of your house, and on your gates:

³ Let not mercy and truth forsake you: bind them about your neck; write them on the table of your heart:

²¹ Bind them continually on your heart, and tie them about your neck.

⁸ Now go, write it before them in a table, and note it in a book, that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever:

¹ The sin of Judah is written with a pen of iron, and with the point of a diamond: it is graven on the table of their heart, and on the horns of your altars;

³³ But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, said the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.

³ For as much as you are manifestly declared to be the letter of Christ ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshy tables of the heart.

¹⁴ I have said to corruption, You are my father: to the worm, You are my mother, and my sister.

² So that you incline your ear to wisdom, and apply your heart to understanding; ³ Yes, if you cry after knowledge, and lift up your voice for understanding; ⁴ If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hid treasures;

⁶ Forsake her not, and she shall preserve you: love her, and she shall keep you. ⁷ Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all your getting get understanding. ⁸ Exalt her, and she shall promote you: she shall bring you to honor, when you do embrace her.

¹ O that you were as my brother, that sucked the breasts of my mother! when I should find you without, I would kiss you; yes, I should not be despised.

⁴⁹ And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brothers! ⁵⁰ For whoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.

²⁷ And it came to pass, as he spoke these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said to him, Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts which you have sucked. ²⁸ But he said, Yes rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

¹⁶ To deliver you from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flatters with her words;

³ For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil:

²⁴ To keep you from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.

⁸ And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and, behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife.

²⁸ The mother of Sisera looked out at a window, and cried through the lattice, Why is his chariot so long in coming? why tarry the wheels of his chariots?

¹⁶ And as the ark of the LORD came into the city of David, Michal Saul's daughter looked through a window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before the LORD; and she despised him in her heart.

⁷ The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.

¹³⁰ The entrance of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.

⁴ To give subtlety to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.

²² How long, you simple ones, will you love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?

³² For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.

³² But whoever commits adultery with a woman lacks understanding: he that does it destroys his own soul.

⁵ O you simple, understand wisdom: and, you fools, be you of an understanding heart.

⁴ Whoever is simple, let him turn in here: as for him that wants understanding, she said to him,

¹⁴ Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men. ¹⁵ Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.

⁸ Remove your way far from her, and come not near the door of her house:

¹⁸ Flee fornication. Every sin that a man does is without the body; but he that commits fornication sins against his own body.

²² Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

²³ And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.

⁶ And you shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.

¹⁶ Moreover the LORD said, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet: ¹⁷ Therefore the LORD will smite with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will discover their secret parts. ¹⁸ In that day the Lord will take away the bravery of their tinkling ornaments about their feet, and their cauls, and their round tires like the moon, ¹⁹ The chains, and the bracelets, and the mufflers, ²⁰ The bonnets, and the ornaments of the legs, and the headbands, and the tablets, and the earrings, ²¹ The rings, and nose jewels, ²² The changeable suits of apparel, and the mantles, and the wimples, and the crisping pins, ²³ The glasses, and the fine linen, and the hoods, and the veils. ²⁴ And it shall come to pass, that instead of sweet smell there shall be stink; and instead of a girdle a rent; and instead of well set hair baldness; and instead of a stomacher a girding of sackcloth; and burning instead of beauty.

¹⁶ Take an harp, go about the city, you harlot that have been forgotten; make sweet melody, sing many songs, that you may be remembered.

³⁰ And when you are spoiled, what will you do? Though you clothe yourself with crimson, though you deck you with ornaments of gold, though you rend your face with painting, in vain shall you make yourself fair; your lovers will despise you, they will seek your life.

² For I am jealous over you with godly jealousy: for I have espoused you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. ³ But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtlety, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

⁹ In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with modesty and sobriety; not with braided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;

³ So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit on a scarlet colored beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. ⁴ And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet color, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: ⁵ And on her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.

⁹ And they said to him, Where is Sarah your wife? And he said, Behold, in the tent.

¹³ A foolish woman is clamorous: she is simple, and knows nothing.

²⁴ It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, than with a brawling woman and in a wide house.

¹⁴ He that blesses his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning, it shall be counted a curse to him. ¹⁵ A continual dropping in a very rainy day and a contentious woman are alike.

¹⁰ Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. ¹¹ The heart of her husband does safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. ¹² She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life. ¹³ She seeks wool, and flax, and works willingly with her hands. ¹⁴ She is like the merchants' ships; she brings her food from afar. ¹⁵ She rises also while it is yet night, and gives meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens. ¹⁶ She considers a field, and buys it: with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard. ¹⁷ She girds her loins with strength, and strengthens her arms. ¹⁸ She perceives that her merchandise is good: her candle goes not out by night. ¹⁹ She lays her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff. ²⁰ She stretches out her hand to the poor; yes, she reaches forth her hands to the needy. ²¹ She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet. ²² She makes herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple. ²³ Her husband is known in the gates, when he sits among the elders of the land. ²⁴ She makes fine linen, and sells it; and delivers girdles to the merchant. ²⁵ Strength and honor are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. ²⁶ She opens her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. ²⁷ She looks well to the ways of her household, and eats not the bread of idleness. ²⁸ Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her. ²⁹ Many daughters have done virtuously, but you excel them all. ³⁰ Favor is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that fears the LORD, she shall be praised. ³¹ Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.

¹³ And with they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not. ¹⁴ I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.

⁵ To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

¹⁴ For she sits at the door of her house, on a seat in the high places of the city,

²⁸ She also lies in wait as for a prey, and increases the transgressors among men.

²⁰ For of old time I have broken your yoke, and burst your bands; and you said, I will not transgress; when on every high hill and under every green tree you wander, playing the harlot.

³³ Why trim you your way to seek love? therefore have you also taught the wicked ones your ways.

³⁶ Why gad you about so much to change your way? you also shall be ashamed of Egypt, as you were ashamed of Assyria.

² Lift up your eyes to the high places, and see where you have not been lien with. In the ways have you sat for them, as the Arabian in the wilderness; and you have polluted the land with your prostitutions and with your wickedness.

²⁴ That you have also built to you an eminent place, and have made you an high place in every street. ²⁵ You have built your high place at every head of the way, and have made your beauty to be abhorred, and have opened your feet to every one that passed by, and multiplied your prostitutions.

³¹ In that you build your eminent place in the head of every way, and make your high place in every street; and have not been as an harlot, in that you scorn hire;

³ For all nations have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, and the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth are waxed rich through the abundance of her delicacies.

²³ And the light of a candle shall shine no more at all in you; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in you: for your merchants were the great men of the earth; for by your sorceries were all nations deceived.

⁷ And it came to pass after these things, that his master's wife cast her eyes on Joseph; and she said, Lie with me.

¹² And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out.

¹ And Israel stayed in Shittim, and the people began to commit prostitution with the daughters of Moab.

⁶ And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought to his brothers a Midianitish woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. ⁷ And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation, and took a javelin in his hand; ⁸ And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel.

¹⁶ Behold, these caused the children of Israel, through the counsel of Balaam, to commit trespass against the LORD in the matter of Peor, and there was a plague among the congregation of the LORD.

²⁹ A wicked man hardens his face: but as for the upright, he directs his way.

⁷ For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.

⁴ For they are impudent children and stiff hearted. I do send you to them; and you shall say to them, Thus said the Lord GOD.

⁶ And you, son of man, be not afraid of them, neither be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns be with you, and you do dwell among scorpions: be not afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks, though they be a rebellious house.

⁷ But the house of Israel will not listen to you; for they will not listen to me: for all the house of Israel are impudent and hardhearted. ⁸ Behold, I have made your face strong against their faces, and your forehead strong against their foreheads. ⁹ As an adamant harder than flint have I made your forehead: fear them not, neither be dismayed at their looks, though they be a rebellious house.

³³ They give gifts to all whores: but you give your gifts to all your lovers, and hire them, that they may come to you on every side for your prostitution.

²⁰ Notwithstanding I have a few things against you, because you suffer that woman Jezebel, which calls herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed to idols.

¹¹ And this is the law of the sacrifice of peace offerings, which he shall offer to the LORD.

¹⁵ And the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offerings for thanksgiving shall be eaten the same day that it is offered; he shall not leave any of it until the morning. ¹⁶ But if the sacrifice of his offering be a vow, or a voluntary offering, it shall be eaten the same day that he offers his sacrifice: and on the morrow also the remainder of it shall be eaten:

⁶ And thither you shall bring your burnt offerings, and your sacrifices, and your tithes, and heave offerings of your hand, and your vows, and your freewill offerings, and the firstborn of your herds and of your flocks: ⁷ And there you shall eat before the LORD your God, and you shall rejoice in all that you put your hand to, you and your households, wherein the LORD your God has blessed you.

⁷ And it came to pass after forty years, that Absalom said to the king, I pray you, let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed to the LORD, in Hebron. ⁸ For your servant vowed a vow while I stayed at Geshur in Syria, saying, If the LORD shall bring me again indeed to Jerusalem, then I will serve the LORD. ⁹ And the king said to him, Go in peace. So he arose, and went to Hebron.

⁹ And she wrote in the letters, saying, Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people: ¹⁰ And set two men, sons of Belial, before him, to bear witness against him, saying, You did blaspheme God and the king. And then carry him out, and stone him, that he may die.

⁸ The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD: but the prayer of the upright is his delight.

¹ Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than an house full of sacrifices with strife.

²⁷ The sacrifice of the wicked is abomination: how much more, when he brings it with a wicked mind?

²⁸ Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas to the hall of judgment: and it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.

²⁸ And Solomon had horses brought out of Egypt, and linen yarn: the king's merchants received the linen yarn at a price.

¹⁶ Behold, you are fair, my beloved, yes, pleasant: also our bed is green.

⁹ Moreover they that work in fine flax, and they that weave networks, shall be confounded.

⁷ Fine linen with broidered work from Egypt was that which you spread forth to be your sail; blue and purple from the isles of Elishah was that which covered you.

²² Behold, I will cast her into a bed, and them that commit adultery with her into great tribulation, except they repent of their deeds.

²³ Take you also to you principal spices, of pure myrrh five hundred shekels, and of sweet cinnamon half so much, even two hundred and fifty shekels, and of sweet calamus two hundred and fifty shekels,

⁸ All your garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made you glad.

⁶ Who is this that comes out of the wilderness like pillars of smoke, perfumed with myrrh and frankincense, with all powders of the merchant?

¹³ Your plants are an orchard of pomegranates, with pleasant fruits; camphire, with spikenard, ¹⁴ Spikenard and saffron; calamus and cinnamon, with all trees of frankincense; myrrh and aloes, with all the chief spices:

⁷ On a lofty and high mountain have you set your bed: even thither went you up to offer sacrifice. ⁸ Behind the doors also and the posts have you set up your remembrance: for you have discovered yourself to another than me, and are gone up; you have enlarged your bed, and made you a covenant with them; you loved their bed where you saw it. ⁹ And you went to the king with ointment, and did increase your perfumes, and did send your messengers far off, and did debase yourself even to hell.

¹¹ And when they had received it, they murmured against the manager of the house,

⁴³ But know this, that if the manager of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.

⁴⁸ But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delays his coming;

³⁴ For the Son of Man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch. ³⁵ Watch you therefore: for you know not when the master of the house comes, at even, or at midnight, or at the cock-crowing, or in the morning: ³⁶ Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping.

³⁹ And this know, that if the manager of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched, and not have suffered his house to be broken through.

⁴⁵ But and if that servant say in his heart, My lord delays his coming; and shall begin to beat the menservants and maidens, and to eat and drink, and to be drunken; ⁴⁶ The lord of that servant will come in a day when he looks not for him, and at an hour when he is not aware, and will cut him in sunder, and will appoint him his portion with the unbelievers.

⁴ Behold, I build an house to the name of the LORD my God, to dedicate it to him, and to burn before him sweet incense, and for the continual show bread, and for the burnt offerings morning and evening, on the sabbaths, and on the new moons, and on the solemn feasts of the LORD our God. This is an ordinance for ever to Israel.

¹⁵ And she said to him, How can you say, I love you, when your heart is not with me? you have mocked me these three times, and have not told me wherein your great strength lies. ¹⁶ And it came to pass, when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was vexed to death; ¹⁷ That he told her all his heart, and said to her, There has not come a razor on my head; for I have been a Nazarite to God from my mother's womb: if I be shaven, then my strength will go from me, and I shall become weak, and be like any other man.

²³ But he refused, and said, I will not eat. But his servants, together with the woman, compelled him; and he listened to their voice. So he arose from the earth, and sat on the bed.

⁸ And it fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, where was a great woman; and she constrained him to eat bread. And so it was, that as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread.

² They speak vanity every one with his neighbor: with flattering lips and with a double heart do they speak.

⁵ That they may keep you from the strange woman, from the stranger which flatters with her words.

²³ And the lord said to the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.

²⁹ But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.

¹⁵ And when she was baptized, and her household, she sought us, saying, If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into my house, and abide there. And she constrained us.

¹⁴ For the love of Christ constrains us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead:

²⁷ You put my feet also in the stocks, and look narrowly to all my paths; you set a print on the heels of my feet.

² Then Pashur smote Jeremiah the prophet, and put him in the stocks that were in the high gate of Benjamin, which was by the house of the LORD.

¹³ Then the priest of Jupiter, which was before their city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates, and would have done sacrifice with the people.

²⁴ Who, having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison, and made their feet fast in the stocks.

⁸ And he went after the man of Israel into the tent, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So the plague was stayed from the children of Israel. ⁹ And those that died in the plague were twenty and four thousand.

¹⁷ Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.

¹⁸ But he knows not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell.

¹² For man also knows not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falls suddenly on them.

¹ Hear, you children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding.

⁷ Hear me now therefore, O you children, and depart not from the words of my mouth.

³² Now therefore listen to me, O you children: for blessed are they that keep my ways. ³³ Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not.

¹⁴ I write not these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons I warn you. ¹⁵ For though you have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet have you not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.

¹⁹ My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you,

¹ My little children, these things write I to you, that you sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

¹⁷⁶ I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek your servant; for I do not forget your commandments.

²³ He shall die without instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.

²⁵ Lust not after her beauty in your heart; neither let her take you with her eyelids.

³¹ Look not you on the wine when it is red, when it gives his color in the cup, when it moves itself aright. ³² At the last it bites like a serpent, and stings like an adder. ³³ Your eyes shall behold strange women, and your heart shall utter perverse things.

⁶ All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

²⁸ But I say to you, That whoever looks on a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.

²¹ But the Philistines took him, and put out his eyes, and brought him down to Gaza, and bound him with fetters of brass; and he did grind in the prison house.

⁶ And it came to pass, while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, that Abner made himself strong for the house of Saul. ⁷ And Saul had a concubine, whose name was Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah: and Ishbosheth said to Abner, Why have you gone in to my father's concubine? ⁸ Then was Abner very wroth for the words of Ishbosheth, and said, Am I a dog's head, which against Judah do show kindness this day to the house of Saul your father, to his brothers, and to his friends, and have not delivered you into the hand of David, that you charge me to day with a fault concerning this woman?

²⁷ And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him quietly, and smote him there under the fifth rib, that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother.

⁹ Why have you despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? you have killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and have taken his wife to be your wife, and have slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon. ¹⁰ Now therefore the sword shall never depart from your house; because you have despised me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife. ¹¹ Thus said the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against you out of your own house, and I will take your wives before your eyes, and give them to your neighbor, and he shall lie with your wives in the sight of this sun.

¹ But king Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites: ² Of the nations concerning which the LORD said to the children of Israel, You shall not go in to them, neither shall they come in to you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon joined to these in love.

²⁶ Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, who was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did outlandish women cause to sin.

³³ A wound and dishonor shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away.

⁸ Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.

²¹ And lest, when I come again, my God will humble me among you, and that I shall mourn many which have sinned already, and have not repented of the uncleanness and fornication and lasciviousness which they have committed.

¹¹ Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;

¹⁸ For her house inclines to death, and her paths to the dead. ¹⁹ None that go to her return again, neither take they hold of the paths of life.

⁵ Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell.

²⁶ And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoever pleases God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.

¹⁵ For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and fornicators, and murderers, and idolaters, and whoever loves and makes a lie.
