¹ Then Job answered and said, ² Of a truth I know that it is so:
But how can man be just with God? ³ If he be pleased to contend with him,
He cannot answer him one of a thousand. ⁴ [He is] wise in heart, and mighty in strength:
Who hath hardened himself against him, and prospered?— ⁵ [Him] that removeth the mountains, and they know it not,
When he overturneth them in his anger; ⁶ That shaketh the earth out of its place,
And the pillars thereof tremble; ⁷ That commandeth the sun, and it riseth not,
And sealeth up the stars; ⁸ That alone stretcheth out the heavens,
And treadeth upon the waves of the sea; ⁹ That maketh the Bear, Orion, and the Pleiades,
And the chambers of the south; ¹⁰ That doeth great things past finding out,
Yea, marvellous things without number. ¹¹ Lo, he goeth by me, and I see him not:
He passeth on also, but I perceive him not. ¹² Behold, he seizeth [the prey], who can hinder him?
Who will say unto him, What doest thou?
¹³ God will not withdraw his anger;
The helpers of Rahab do stoop under him. ¹⁴ How much less shall I answer him,
And choose out my words [to reason] with him? ¹⁵ Whom, though I were righteous, yet would I not answer;
I would make supplication to my judge. ¹⁶ If I had called, and he had answered me,
Yet would I not believe that he hearkened unto my voice. ¹⁷ For he breaketh me with a tempest,
And multiplieth my wounds without cause. ¹⁸ He will not suffer me to take my breath,
But filleth me with bitterness. ¹⁹ If [we speak] of strength, lo, [he is] mighty!
And if of justice, Who, [saith he], will summon me? ²⁰ Though I be righteous, mine own mouth shall condemn me:
Though I be perfect, it shall prove me perverse. ²¹ I am perfect; I regard not myself;
I despise my life. ²² It is all one; therefore I say,
He destroyeth the perfect and the wicked. ²³ If the scourge slay suddenly,
He will mock at the trial of the innocent. ²⁴ The earth is given into the hand of the wicked;
He covereth the faces of the judges thereof:
If [it be] not [he], who then is it?
²⁵ Now my days are swifter than a post:
They flee away, they see no good, ²⁶ They are passed away as the swift ships;
As the eagle that swoopeth on the prey. ²⁷ If I say, I will forget my complaint,
I will put off my [sad] countenance, and be of good cheer; ²⁸ I am afraid of all my sorrows,
I know that thou wilt not hold me innocent. ²⁹ I shall be condemned;
Why then do I labor in vain? ³⁰ If I wash myself with snow water,
And make my hands never so clean; ³¹ Yet wilt thou plunge me in the ditch,
And mine own clothes shall abhor me. ³² For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him,
That we should come together in judgment. ³³ There is no umpire betwixt us,
That might lay his hand upon us both. ³⁴ Let him take his rod away from me,
And let not his terror make me afraid: ³⁵ Then would I speak, and not fear him;
For I am not so in myself.

⁴⁶ If they sin against thee (for there is no man that sinneth not), and thou be angry with them, and deliver them to the enemy, so that they carry them away captive unto the land of the enemy, far off or near;

¹⁷ Shall mortal man be more just than God?
Shall a man be more pure than his Maker?

³ And dost thou open thine eyes upon such a one,
And bringest me into judgment with thee? ⁴ Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? not one.

⁴ How then can man be just with God?
Or how can he be clean that is born of a woman?

² Then was kindled the wrath of Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the family of Ram: against Job was his wrath kindled, because he justified himself rather than God.

⁹ I am clean, without transgression;
I am innocent, neither is there iniquity in me:

⁵ For Job hath said, I am righteous,
And God hath taken away my right:

³ If thou, Jehovah, shouldest mark iniquities,
O Lord, who could stand?

² And enter not into judgment with thy servant;
For in thy sight no man living is righteous.

²⁰ because by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified in his sight; for through the law [cometh] the knowledge of sin.

²⁰ Though I be righteous, mine own mouth shall condemn me:
Though I be perfect, it shall prove me perverse.

³² For he is not a man, as I am, that I should answer him,
That we should come together in judgment. ³³ There is no umpire betwixt us,
That might lay his hand upon us both.

² I will say unto God, Do not condemn me;
Show me wherefore thou contendest with me.

³ Oh that I knew where I might find him!
That I might come even to his seat! ⁴ I would set my cause in order before him,
And fill my mouth with arguments. ⁵ I would know the words which he would answer me,
And understand what he would say unto me. ⁶ Would he contend with me in the greatness of his power?
Nay; but he would give heed unto me. ⁷ There the upright might reason with him;
So should I be delivered for ever from my judge.

³⁵ Oh that I had one to hear me!
(Lo, here is my signature, let the Almighty answer me)
And [that I had] the indictment which mine adversary hath written! ³⁶ Surely I would carry it upon my shoulder;
I would bind it unto me as a crown: ³⁷ I would declare unto him the number of my steps;
As a prince would I go near unto him.

¹³ Why dost thou strive against him,
For that he giveth not account of any of his matters?

¹⁴ If he set his heart upon himself,
[If] he gather unto himself his spirit and his breath; ¹⁵ All flesh shall perish together,
And man shall turn again unto dust.

² Shall he that cavilleth contend with the Almighty?
He that argueth with God, let him answer it.

¹² Who can discern [his] errors?
Clear thou me from hidden [faults].

¹² For innumerable evils have compassed me about;
Mine iniquities have overtaken me, so that I am not able to look up;
They are more than the hairs of my head;
And my heart hath failed me.

¹⁵ For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy: I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite. ¹⁶ For I will not contend for ever, neither will I be always wroth; for the spirit would faint before me, and the souls that I have made.

²⁰ Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why didst thou make me thus?

⁸ If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

²⁰ because if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.

¹⁴ For I will this time send all my plagues upon thy heart, and upon thy servants, and upon thy people; that thou mayest know that there is none like me in all the earth. ¹⁵ For now I had put forth my hand, and smitten thee and thy people with pestilence, and thou hadst been cut off from the earth: ¹⁶ but in very deed for this cause have I made thee to stand, to show thee my power, and that my name may be declared throughout all the earth. ¹⁷ As yet exaltest thou thyself against my people, that thou wilt not let them go?

¹⁷ And I, behold, I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they shall go in after them: and I will get me honor upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen. ¹⁸ And the Egyptians shall know that I am Jehovah, when I have gotten me honor upon Pharaoh, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen.

¹² And, behold, God is with us at our head, and his priests with the trumpets of alarm to sound an alarm against you. O children of Israel, fight ye not against Jehovah, the God of your fathers; for ye shall not prosper.

¹⁰ And be it still my consolation,
Yea, let me exult in pain that spareth not,
That I have not denied the words of the Holy One.

¹⁹ If [we speak] of strength, lo, [he is] mighty!
And if of justice, Who, [saith he], will summon me?

⁶ And that he would show thee the secrets of wisdom!
For he is manifold in understanding.
Know therefore that God exacteth of thee less than thine iniquity deserveth.

¹³ With [God] is wisdom and might;
He hath counsel and understanding.

²³ He wandereth abroad for bread, [saying], Where is it?
He knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand. ²⁴ Distress and anguish make him afraid;
They prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle. ²⁵ Because he hath stretched out his hand against God,
And behaveth himself proudly against the Almighty; ²⁶ He runneth upon him with a [stiff] neck,
With the thick bosses of his bucklers; ²⁷ Because he hath covered his face with his fatness,
And gathered fat upon his loins;

⁵ Behold, God is mighty, and despiseth not any:
He is mighty in strength of understanding.

⁹ Or hast thou an arm like God?
And canst thou thunder with a voice like him?

²⁴ O Jehovah, how manifold are thy works!
In wisdom hast thou made them all:
The earth is full of thy riches.

⁵ To him that by understanding made the heavens;
For his lovingkindness [endureth] for ever:

¹⁴ Happy is the man that feareth alway;
But he that hardeneth his heart shall fall into mischief.

¹ He that being often reproved hardeneth his neck
Shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy

²⁰ Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever; for wisdom and might are his.

³⁴ And at the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the Most High, and I praised and honored him that liveth for ever; for his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom from generation to generation; ³⁵ and all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou? ³⁶ At the same time mine understanding returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, my majesty and brightness returned unto me; and my counsellors and my lords sought unto me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent greatness was added unto me. ³⁷ Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven; for all his works are truth, and his ways justice; and those that walk in pride he is able to abase.

²⁰ But when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit was hardened so that he dealt proudly, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him: ²¹ and he was driven from the sons of men, and his heart was made like the beasts', and his dwelling was with the wild asses; he was fed with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; until he knew that the Most High God ruleth in the kingdom of men, and that he setteth up over it whomsoever he will. ²² And thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thy heart, though thou knewest all this, ²³ but hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou and thy lords, thy wives and thy concubines, have drunk wine from them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know; and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified. ²⁴ Then was the part of the hand sent from before him, and this writing was inscribed.
²⁵ And this is the writing that was inscribed: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN. ²⁶ This is the interpretation of the thing: MENE; God hath numbered thy kingdom, and brought it to an end; ²⁷ TEKEL; thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting. ²⁸ PERES; thy kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.
²⁹ Then commanded Belshazzar, and they clothed Daniel with purple, and put a chain of gold about his neck, and made proclamation concerning him, that he should be the third ruler in the kingdom. ³⁰ In that night Belshazzar the Chaldean king was slain.

³³ O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past tracing out!

²² Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?

⁸ which he made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence,

¹⁹ and what the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to that working of the strength of his might

¹⁰ to the intent that now unto the principalities and the powers in the heavenly [places] might be made known through the church the manifold wisdom of God,

²⁰ Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,

²⁴ Now unto him that is able to guard you from stumbling, and to set you before the presence of his glory without blemish in exceeding joy, ²⁵ to the only God our Saviour, through Jesus Christ our Lord, [be] glory, majesty, dominion and power, before all time, and now, and for evermore. Amen.

⁵ And these are the names of the men that shall stand with you. Of Reuben: Elizur the son of Shedeur. ⁶ Of Simeon: Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai.

⁹ He putteth forth his hand upon the flinty rock;
He overturneth the mountains by the roots.

² Therefore will we not fear, though the earth do change,
And though the mountains be shaken into the heart of the seas

⁸ The earth trembled,
The heavens also dropped [rain] at the presence of God:
Yon Sinai [trembled] at the presence of God, the God of Israel.

⁶ Ye mountains, that ye skip like rams;
Ye little hills, like lambs?

¹² Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance?

⁶ He stood, and measured the earth;
He beheld, and drove asunder the nations;
And the eternal mountains were scattered;
The everlasting hills did bow;
His goings were [as] of old.

¹⁰ The mountains saw thee, and were afraid;
The tempest of waters passed by;
The deep uttered its voice,
And lifted up its hands on high.

⁷ Who art thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel [thou shalt become] a plain; and he shall bring forth the top stone with shoutings of Grace, grace, unto it.

⁴ And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east; and the mount of Olives shall be cleft in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, [and there shall be] a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south. ⁵ And ye shall flee by the valley of my mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azel; yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah; and Jehovah my God shall come, and all the holy ones with thee.

²¹ And Jesus answered and said unto them, { Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do what is done to the fig tree, but even if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou taken up and cast into the sea, it shall be done.

⁵¹ And behold, the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake; and the rocks were rent;

¹¹ and there shall be great earthquakes, and in divers places famines and pestilences; and there shall be terrors and great signs from heaven.

² And if I have [the gift of] prophecy, and know all mysteries and all knowledge; and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

¹⁴ And the heaven was removed as a scroll when it is rolled up; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.

¹³ And in that hour there was a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell; and there were killed in the earthquake seven thousand persons: and the rest were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.

¹⁸ and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunders; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since there were men upon the earth, so great an earthquake, so mighty. ¹⁹ And the great city was divided into into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and Babylon the great was remembered in the sight of God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. ²⁰ And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.

⁸ He raiseth up the poor out of the dust,
He lifteth up the needy from the dunghill,
To make them sit with princes,
And inherit the throne of glory:
For the pillars of the earth are Jehovah's,
And he hath set the world upon them.

¹¹ The pillars of heaven tremble
And are astonished at his rebuke.

⁴ Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth?
Declare, if thou hast understanding. ⁵ Who determined the measures thereof, if thou knowest?
Or who stretched the line upon it? ⁶ Whereupon were the foundations thereof fastened?
Or who laid the corner-stone thereof, ⁷ When the morning stars sang together,
And all the sons of God shouted for joy?

³ The earth and all the inhabitants thereof are dissolved:
I have set up the pillars of it. [Selah

⁷ Tremble, thou earth, at the presence of the Lord,
At the presence of the God of Jacob,

¹⁹ And men shall go into the caves of the rocks, and into the holes of the earth, from before the terror of Jehovah, and from the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake mightily the earth.

²¹ to go into the caverns of the rocks, and into the clefts of the ragged rocks, from before the terror of Jehovah, and from the glory of his majesty, when he ariseth to shake mightily the earth.

¹³ Therefore I will make the heavens to tremble, and the earth shall be shaken out of its place, in the wrath of Jehovah of hosts, and in the day of his fierce anger. ¹⁴ And it shall come to pass, that as the chased roe, and as sheep that no man gathereth, they shall turn every man to his own people, and shall flee every man to his own land.

¹ Behold, Jehovah maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof.

¹⁹ The earth is utterly broken, the earth is rent asunder, the earth is shaken violently. ²⁰ The earth shall stagger like a drunken man, and shall sway to and fro like a hammock; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it, and it shall fall, and not rise again.

²⁴ I beheld the mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved to and fro.

¹⁰ The earth quaketh before them; the heavens tremble; the sun and the moon are darkened, and the stars withdraw their shining.

⁶ For thus saith Jehovah of hosts: Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land;

²¹ Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I will shake the heavens and the earth;

²⁶ whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more will I make to tremble not the earth only, but also the heaven.

¹¹ And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat upon it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.

²¹ And Jehovah said unto Moses, Stretch out thy hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even darkness which may be felt. ²² And Moses stretched forth his hand toward heaven; and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days;

¹² Then spake Joshua to Jehovah in the day when Jehovah delivered up the Amorites before the children of Israel; and he said in the sight of Israel,
Sun, stand thou still upon Gibeon;
And thou, Moon, in the valley of Aijalon.

⁷ He sealeth up the hand of every man,
That all men whom he hath made may know [it].

¹² Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days [began],
[And] caused the dayspring to know its place; ¹³ That it might take hold of the ends of the earth,
And the wicked be shaken out of it? ¹⁴ It is changed as clay under the seal;
And [all things] stand forth as a garment: ¹⁵ And from the wicked their light is withholden,
And the high arm is broken.

¹⁹ Where is the way to the dwelling of light?
And as for darkness, where is the place thereof, ²⁰ That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof,
And that thou shouldest discern the paths to the house thereof?

¹⁰ For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light; the sun shall be darkened in its going forth, and the moon shall not cause its light to shine.

⁷ And when I shall extinguish thee, I will cover the heavens, and make the stars thereof dark; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give its light. ⁸ All the bright lights of heaven will I make dark over thee, and set darkness upon thy land, saith the Lord Jehovah.

³⁵ and all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?

¹³ For, lo, he that formeth the mountains, and createth the wind, and declareth unto man what is his thought; that maketh the morning darkness, and treadeth upon the high places of the earth—Jehovah, the God of hosts, is his name.

⁹ And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord Jehovah, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the clear day.

²⁹ But immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

²⁵ And there shall be signs in sun and moon and stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, in perplexity for the roaring of the sea and the billows; ²⁶ men fainting for fear, and for expectation of the things which are coming on the world: for the powers of the heavens shall be shaken.

⁶ And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. ⁷ And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.

¹⁸ Canst thou with him spread out the sky,
Which is strong as a molten mirror?

¹¹ And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further;
And here shall thy proud waves be stayed?

¹⁶ Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea?
Or hast thou walked in the recesses of the deep?

⁶ By the word of Jehovah were the heavens made,
And all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.

¹⁹ Thy way was in the sea,
And thy paths in the great waters,
And thy footsteps were not known.

³ The floods have lifted up, O Jehovah,
The floods have lifted up their voice;
The floods lift up their waves. ⁴ Above the voices of many waters,
The mighty breakers of the sea,
Jehovah on high is mighty.

² Who coverest thyself with light as with a garment;
Who stretchest out the heavens like a curtain; ³ Who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters;
Who maketh the clouds his chariot;
Who walketh upon the wings of the wind;

²² [It is] he that sitteth above the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in;

⁵ Thus saith God Jehovah, he that created the heavens, and stretched them forth; he that spread abroad the earth and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein:

²⁴ Thus saith Jehovah, thy Redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb: I am Jehovah, that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth ([who is with me]?);

¹¹ Thus shall ye say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, these shall perish from the earth, and from under the heavens.

¹ The burden of the word of Jehovah concerning Israel. [Thus] saith Jehovah, who stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him:

²⁵ And in the fourth watch of the night he came unto them, walking upon the sea. ²⁶ And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a ghost; and they cried out for fear. ²⁷ But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. ²⁸ And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee upon the waters. ²⁹ And he said, Come. And Peter went down from the boat, and walked upon the waters to come to Jesus. ³⁰ But when he saw the wind, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, Lord, save me.

¹⁹ When therefore they had rowed about five and twenty or thirty furlongs, they behold Jesus walking on the sea, and drawing nigh unto the boat: and they were afraid.

¹⁶ And God made the two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: [he made] the stars also.

⁹ Out of the chamber [of the south] cometh the storm,
And cold out of the north.

³¹ Canst thou bind the cluster of the Pleiades,
Or loose the bands of Orion? ³² Canst thou lead forth the Mazzaroth in their season?
Or canst thou guide the Bear with her train? ³³ Knowest thou the ordinances of the heavens?
Canst thou establish the dominion thereof in the earth?
³⁴ Canst thou lift up thy voice to the clouds,
That abundance of waters may cover thee? ³⁵ Canst thou send forth lightnings, that they may go,
And say unto thee, Here we are? ³⁶ Who hath put wisdom in the inward parts?
Or who hath given understanding to the mind? ³⁷ Who can number the clouds by wisdom?
Or who can pour out the bottles of heaven, ³⁸ When the dust runneth into a mass,
And the clods cleave fast together?
³⁹ Canst thou hunt the prey for the lioness,
Or satisfy the appetite of the young lions, ⁴⁰ When they couch in their dens,
[And] abide in the covert to lie in wait? ⁴¹ Who provideth for the raven his prey,
When his young ones cry unto God,
[And] wander for lack of food?

³ Who layeth the beams of his chambers in the waters;
Who maketh the clouds his chariot;
Who walketh upon the wings of the wind;

¹³ He watereth the mountains from his chambers:
The earth is filled with the fruit of thy works.

⁴ He counteth the number of the stars;
He calleth them all by [their] names.

⁸ [seek him] that maketh the Pleiades and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night; that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth (Jehovah is his name);

¹³ And from thence we made a circuit, and arrived at Rhegium: and after one day a south wind sprang up, and on the second day we came to Puteoli;

¹¹ Who is like unto thee, O Jehovah, among the gods?
Who is like thee, glorious in holiness,
Fearful in praises, doing wonders?

⁹ Who doeth great things and unsearchable,
Marvellous things without number:

¹² He stirreth up the sea with his power,
And by his understanding he smiteth through Rahab. ¹³ By his Spirit the heavens are garnished;
His hand hath pierced the swift serpent. ¹⁴ Lo, these are but the outskirts of his ways:
And how small a whisper do we hear of him!
But the thunder of his power who can understand?

²³ [Touching] the Almighty, we cannot find him out:
He is excellent in power;
And in justice and plenteous righteousness he will not afflict.

¹⁵ My mouth shall tell of thy righteousness,
[And] of thy salvation all the day;
For I know not the numbers [thereof].

¹⁸ Blessed be Jehovah God, the God of Israel,
Who only doeth wondrous things:

⁴ To him who alone doeth great wonders;
For his lovingkindness [endureth] for ever:

¹¹ He hath made everything beautiful in its time: also he hath set eternity in their heart, yet so that man cannot find out the work that God hath done from the beginning even to the end.

²⁶ Lift up your eyes on high, and see who hath created these, that bringeth out their host by number; he calleth them all by name; by the greatness of his might, and for that he is strong in power, not one is lacking.
²⁷ Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, My way is hid from Jehovah, and the justice [due] to me is passed away from my God? ²⁸ Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard? The everlasting God, Jehovah, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary; there is no searching of his understanding.

² It hath seemed good unto me to show the signs and wonders that the Most High God hath wrought toward me. ³ How great are his signs! and how mighty are his wonders! his kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion is from generation to generation.

⁸ Behold, I go forward, but he is not [there];
And backward, but I cannot perceive him; ⁹ On the left hand, when he doth work, but I cannot behold him;
He hideth himself on the right hand, that I cannot see him.

¹⁴ How much less when thou sayest thou beholdest him not,
The cause is before him, and thou waitest for him!

¹⁶ who only hath immortality, dwelling in light unapproachable; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom [be] honor and power eternal. Amen.

¹⁰ If he pass through, and shut up,
And call unto judgment, then who can hinder him?

¹³ But he is in one [mind], and who can turn him?
And what his soul desireth, even that he doeth.

²⁹ When he giveth quietness, who then can condemn?
And when he hideth his face, who then can behold him?
Alike whether [it be done] unto a nation, or unto a man:

⁹ Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker! a potsherd among the potsherds of the earth! Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth it, What makest thou? or thy work, He hath no hands?

⁶ O house of Israel, cannot I do with you as this potter? saith Jehovah. Behold, as the clay in the potter's hand, so are ye in my hand, O house of Israel.

²⁶ yea, Father, for so it was well-pleasing in thy sight.

¹⁵ Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? or is thine eye evil, because I am good?

¹⁸ So then he hath mercy on whom he will, and whom he will be hardeneth.
¹⁹ Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he still find fault? For who withstandeth his will? ²⁰ Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why didst thou make me thus?

³⁴ For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor?

¹¹ in whom also we were made a heritage, having been foreordained according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his will;

¹² He stirreth up the sea with his power,
And by his understanding he smiteth through Rahab.

⁹ Or hast thou an arm like God?
And canst thou thunder with a voice like him?
¹⁰ Deck thyself now with excellency and dignity;
And array thyself with honor and majesty. ¹¹ Pour forth the overflowings of thine anger;
And look upon every one that is proud, and abase him.

¹⁰ Thou hast broken Rahab in pieces, as one that is slain;
Thou hast scattered thine enemies with the arm of thy strength.

⁷ For Egypt helpeth in vain, and to no purpose: therefore have I called her Rahab that sitteth still.

² Yet he also is wise, and will bring evil, and will not call back his words, but will arise against the house of the evil-doers, and against the help of them that work iniquity. ³ Now the Egyptians are men, and not God; and their horses flesh, and not spirit: and when Jehovah shall stretch out his hand, both he that helpeth shall stumble, and he that is helped shall fall, and they all shall be consumed together.

⁹ Awake, awake, put on strength, O arm of Jehovah; awake, as in the days of old, the generations of ancient times. Is it not thou that didst cut Rahab in pieces, that didst pierce the monster?

⁶ But he giveth more grace. Wherefore [the scripture] saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble. ⁷ Be subject therefore unto God; but resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

²⁷ But will God in very deed dwell on the earth? behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain thee; how much less this house that I have builded!

¹⁹ How much more them that dwell in houses of clay,
Whose foundation is in the dust,
Who are crushed before the moth!

³ If he be pleased to contend with him,
He cannot answer him one of a thousand.

⁴ For thou sayest, My doctrine is pure,
And I am clean in thine eyes. ⁵ But oh that God would speak,
And open his lips against thee,

⁴ I would set my cause in order before him,
And fill my mouth with arguments.

⁷ There the upright might reason with him;
So should I be delivered for ever from my judge.

⁶ How much less man, that is a worm!
And the son of man, that is a worm!

⁵ If thou canst, answer thou me;
Set [thy words] in order before me, stand forth.

³⁸ what prayer and supplication soever be made by any man, [or] by all thy people Israel, who shall know every man the plague of his own heart, and spread forth his hands toward this house: ³⁹ then hear thou in heaven thy dwelling-place, and forgive, and do, and render unto every man according to all his ways, whose heart thou knowest; (for thou, even thou only, knowest the hearts of all the children of men;)

¹³ And he prayed unto him; and he was entreated of him, and heard his supplication, and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom. Then Manasseh knew that Jehovah he was God.

⁸ But as for me, I would seek unto God,
And unto God would I commit my cause;

⁵ If thou wouldest seek diligently unto God,
And make thy supplication to the Almighty;

¹⁵ If I be wicked, woe unto me;
And if I be righteous, yet shall I not lift up my head;
Being filled with ignominy,
And looking upon mine affliction.

²⁷ Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he will hear thee;
And thou shalt pay thy vows.

³¹ For hath any said unto God, I have borne [chastisement], I will not offend [any more]: ³² That which I see not teach thou me:
If I have done iniquity, I will do it no more?

⁹ They shall come with weeping; and with supplications will I lead them: I will cause them to walk by rivers of waters, in a straight way wherein they shall not stumble; for I am a father to Israel, and Ephraim is my first-born.

³ And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting and sackcloth and ashes.

¹⁸ O my God, incline thine ear, and hear; open thine eyes, and behold our desolations, and the city which is called by thy name: for we do not present our supplications before thee for our righteousnesses, but for thy great mercies' sake.

⁴ For I know nothing against myself; yet am I not hereby justified: but he that judgeth me is the Lord.

²³ who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, threatened not; but committed [himself] to him that judgeth righteously:

⁹ And Moses spake so unto the children of Israel: but they hearkened not unto Moses for anguish of spirit, and for cruel bondage.

¹³ And Gideon said unto him, Oh, my lord, if Jehovah is with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where are all his wondrous works which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not Jehovah bring us up from Egypt? but now Jehovah hath cast us off, and delivered us into the hand of Midian.

²⁴ I smiled on them, when they had no confidence;
And the light of my countenance they cast not down.

⁶ In my distress I called upon Jehovah,
And cried unto my God:
He heard my voice out of his temple,
And my cry before him came into his ears.

¹⁸ If I regard iniquity in my heart,
The Lord will not hear: ¹⁹ But verily God hath heard;
He hath attended to the voice of my prayer. ²⁰ Blessed be God,
Who hath not turned away my prayer,
Nor his lovingkindness from me.

¹ I love Jehovah, because he heareth
My voice and my supplications. ² Because he hath inclined his ear unto me,
Therefore will I call [upon him] as long as I live.

¹ A Song of Ascents.

When Jehovah brought back those that returned to Zion,
We were like unto them that dream.

⁴¹ And while they still disbelieved for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here anything to eat?

¹⁴ And when she knew Peter's voice, she opened not the gate for joy, but ran in, and told that Peter stood before the gate. ¹⁵ And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she confidently affirmed that it was even so. And they said, It is his angel. ¹⁶ But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened, they saw him, and were amazed.

¹⁴ that there came a messenger unto Job, and said, The oxen were plowing, and the asses feeding beside them; ¹⁵ and the Sabeans fell [upon them], and took them away: yea, they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee. ¹⁶ While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee. ¹⁷ While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have taken them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee. ¹⁸ While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house; ¹⁹ and, behold, there came a great wind from the wilderness, and smote the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young men, and they are dead; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

³ And Jehovah said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job? for there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and turneth away from evil: and he still holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.

⁷ So Satan went forth from the presence of Jehovah, and smote Job with sore boils from the sole of his foot unto his crown.

¹³ So they sat down with him upon the ground seven days and seven nights, and none spake a word unto him: for they saw that his grief was very great.

¹² I was at ease, and he brake me asunder;
Yea, he hath taken me by the neck, and dashed me to pieces:
He hath also set me up for his mark.

¹⁴ He breaketh me with breach upon breach;
He runneth upon me like a giant.

¹⁷ Although there is no violence in my hands,
And my prayer is pure.

²² Thou liftest me up to the wind, thou causest me to ride [upon it];
And thou dissolvest me in the storm.

⁶ Notwithstanding my right I am [accounted] a liar;
My wound is incurable, [though I am] without transgression.

³ Yea, none that wait for thee shall be put to shame:
They shall be put to shame that deal treacherously without cause.

⁵ The voice of Jehovah breaketh the cedars;
Yea, Jehovah breaketh in pieces the cedars of Lebanon.

⁷ Deep calleth unto deep at the noise of thy waterfalls:
All thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.

¹⁵ So pursue them with thy tempest,
And terrify them with thy storm.

¹⁷ And I will make justice the line, and righteousness the plummet; and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding-place.

¹⁹ Behold, the tempest of Jehovah, [even his] wrath, is gone forth, yea, a whirling tempest: it shall burst upon the head of the wicked.

¹³ Therefore thus saith the Lord Jehovah: I will even rend it with a stormy wind in my wrath; and there shall be an overflowing shower in mine anger, and great hailstones in wrath to consume it.

²⁷ and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and smote upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall thereof.}

²⁰ A bruised reed shall he not break,
And smoking flax shall he not quench,
Till he send forth judgment unto victory.

³ Jesus answered, { Neither did this man sin, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.

²⁵ But [this cometh to pass], that the word may be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.

²⁰ Wherefore is light given to him that is in misery,
And life unto the bitter in soul;

¹⁹ How long wilt thou not look away from me,
Nor let me alone till I swallow down my spittle?

² As God liveth, who hath taken away my right,
And the Almighty, who hath vexed my soul:

¹³ Oh spare me, that I may recover strength,
Before I go hence, and be no more.

⁷ Thy wrath lieth hard upon me,
And thou hast afflicted me with all thy waves. [Selah

¹⁵ I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up:
While I suffer thy terrors I am distracted. ¹⁶ Thy fierce wrath is gone over me;
Thy terrors have cut me off. ¹⁷ They came round about me like water all the day long;
They compassed me about together. ¹⁸ Lover and friend hast thou put far from me,
And mine acquaintance into darkness.

³ Surely against me he turneth his hand again and again all the day.

¹⁵ He hath filled me with bitterness, he hath sated me with wormwood.

¹⁸ And I said, My strength is perished, and mine expectation from Jehovah.
¹⁹ Remember mine affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall.

¹¹ All chastening seemeth for the present to be not joyous but grievous; yet afterward it yieldeth peaceable fruit unto them that have been exercised thereby, [even the fruit] of righteousness.

⁴ [He is] wise in heart, and mighty in strength:
Who hath hardened himself against him, and prospered?—

³⁵ Oh that I had one to hear me!
(Lo, here is my signature, let the Almighty answer me)
And [that I had] the indictment which mine adversary hath written!

⁵ If thou canst, answer thou me;
Set [thy words] in order before me, stand forth. ⁶ Behold, I am toward God even as thou art:
I also am formed out of the clay. ⁷ Behold, my terror shall not make thee afraid,
Neither shall my pressure be heavy upon thee.

¹⁷ But thou art full of the judgment of the wicked:
Judgment and justice take hold [on thee]. ¹⁸ For let not wrath stir thee up against chastisements;
Neither let the greatness of the ransom turn thee aside. ¹⁹ Will thy cry avail, [that thou be] not in distress,
Or all the forces of [thy] strength?

⁹ Or hast thou an arm like God?
And canst thou thunder with a voice like him?
¹⁰ Deck thyself now with excellency and dignity;
And array thyself with honor and majesty.

¹¹ God hath spoken once,
Twice have I heard this,
That power belongeth unto God.

¹³ And bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil [one].

²⁵ Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.

¹ There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and turned away from evil.

² Of a truth I know that it is so:
But how can man be just with God?

⁵ For thine iniquity teacheth thy mouth,
And thou choosest the tongue of the crafty. ⁶ Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I;
Yea, thine own lips testify against thee.

¹ So these three men ceased to answer Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes. ² Then was kindled the wrath of Elihu the son of Barachel the Buzite, of the family of Ram: against Job was his wrath kindled, because he justified himself rather than God.

⁸ Surely thou hast spoken in my hearing,
And I have heard the voice of [thy] words, [saying], ⁹ I am clean, without transgression;
I am innocent, neither is there iniquity in me: ¹⁰ Behold, he findeth occasions against me,
He counteth me for his enemy: ¹¹ He putteth my feet in the stocks,
He marketh all my paths. ¹² Behold, I will answer thee, in this thou art not just;
For God is greater than man.
¹³ Why dost thou strive against him,
For that he giveth not account of any of his matters?

³⁵ Job speaketh without knowledge,
And his words are without wisdom.

¹⁶ Therefore doth Job open his mouth in vanity;
He multiplieth words without knowledge.

¹⁹ In the multitude of words there wanteth not transgression;
But he that refraineth his lips doeth wisely.

²⁰ He that hath a wayward heart findeth no good;
And he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.

⁵ Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, Jehovah of hosts.

³⁶ And I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. ³⁷ For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.}

²⁹ But he, desiring to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbor?

¹⁵ And he said unto them, { Ye are they that justify yourselves in the sight of men; but God knoweth your hearts: for that which is exalted among men is an abomination in the sight of God.

¹² Not that I have already obtained, or am already made perfect: but I press on, if so be that I may lay hold on that for which also I was laid hold on by Christ Jesus. ¹³ Brethren, I count not myself yet to have laid hold: but one thing [I do], forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before. ¹⁴ I press on toward the goal unto the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. ¹⁵ Let us therefore, as many as are perfect, be thus minded: and if in anything ye are otherwise minded, this also shall God reveal unto you:

⁵ wranglings of men corrupted in mind and bereft of the truth, supposing that godliness is a way of gain.

² For in many things we all stumble. If any stumbleth not in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also.

¹⁵ So that my soul chooseth strangling,
And death rather than [these] my bones. ¹⁶ I loathe [my life]; I would not live alway:
Let me alone; for my days are vanity.

²¹ And why dost thou not pardon my transgression, and take away mine iniquity?
For now shall I lie down in the dust;
And thou wilt seek me diligently, but I shall not be.

²³ Search me, O God, and know my heart:
Try me, and know my thoughts; ²⁴ And see if there be any wicked way in me,
And lead me in the way everlasting.

²⁶ He that trusteth in his own heart is a fool;
But whoso walketh wisely, he shall be delivered.

⁹ The heart is deceitful above all things, and it is exceedingly corrupt: who can know it? ¹⁰ I, Jehovah, search the mind, I try the heart, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.

⁸ Thy hands have framed me and fashioned me
Together round about; yet thou dost destroy me.

¹ For all this I laid to my heart, even to explore all this: that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God; whether it be love or hatred, man knoweth it not; all is before them.
² All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth and to him that sacrificeth not; as is the good, so is the sinner; [and] he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath. ³ This is an evil in all that is done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea also, the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that [they go] to the dead.

³ and say to the land of Israel, Thus saith Jehovah: Behold, I am against thee, and will draw forth my sword out of its sheath, and will cut off from thee the righteous and the wicked. ⁴ Seeing then that I will cut off from thee the righteous and the wicked, therefore shall my sword go forth out of its sheath against all flesh from the south to the north:

² And he answered and said unto them, { Think ye that these Galilζans were sinners above all the Galilζans, because they have suffered these things? ³ I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all in like manner perish. ⁴ Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and killed them, think ye that they were offenders above all the men that dwell in Jerusalem?

¹⁵ Now therefore seeing that I am come to speak this word unto my lord the king, it is because the people have made me afraid: and thy handmaid said, I will now speak unto the king; it may be that the king will perform the request of his servant.

¹⁷ Then thy handmaid said, Let, I pray thee, the word of my lord the king be comfortable; for as an angel of God, so is my lord the king to discern good and bad: and Jehovah thy God be with thee.

¹³ And it fell on a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house,

⁷ Remember, I pray thee, who [ever] perished, being innocent?
Or where were the upright cut off?

²⁰ Behold, God will not cast away a perfect man,
Neither will he uphold the evil-doers.

¹² From out of the populous city men groan,
And the soul of the wounded crieth out:
Yet God regardeth not the folly.

²² Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long;
We are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.

¹⁹ Or if I send a pestilence into that land, and pour out my wrath upon it in blood, to cut off from it man and beast; ²⁰ though Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, as I live, saith the Lord Jehovah, they should deliver neither son nor daughter; they should but deliver their own souls by their righteousness.
²¹ For thus saith the Lord Jehovah: How much more when I send my four sore judgments upon Jerusalem, the sword, and the famine, and the evil beasts, and the pestilence, to cut off from it man and beast!

¹³ For there is a trial; and what if even the rod that contemneth shall be no more? saith the Lord Jehovah.

³⁶ and others had trial of mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment: ³⁷ they were stoned, they were sawn asunder, they were tempted, they were slain with the sword: they went about in sheepskins, in goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, ill-treated

³⁰ And David went up by the ascent of the [mount of] Olives, and wept as he went up; and he had his head covered, and went barefoot: and all the people that were with him covered every man his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up.

⁴ And the king covered his face, and the king cried with a loud voice, O my son Absalom, O Absalom, my son, my son!

¹² And Mordecai came again to the king's gate. But Haman hasted to his house, mourning and having his head covered.

⁸ Then the king returned out of the palace garden into the place of the banquet of wine; and Haman was fallen upon the couch whereon Esther was. Then said the king, Will he even force the queen before me in the house? As the word went out of the king's mouth, they covered Haman's face.

³ Is it good unto thee that thou shouldest oppress,
That thou shouldest despise the work of thy hands,
And shine upon the counsel of the wicked?

⁶ The tents of robbers prosper,
And they that provoke God are secure;
Into whose hand God bringeth [abundantly].
⁷ But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee;
And the birds of the heavens, and they shall tell thee: ⁸ Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee;
And the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee. ⁹ Who knoweth not in all these,
That the hand of Jehovah hath wrought this, ¹⁰ In whose hand is the soul of every living thing,
And the breath of all mankind?

¹⁷ He leadeth counsellors away stripped,
And judges maketh he fools.

¹¹ God delivereth me to the ungodly,
And casteth me into the hands of the wicked.

⁷ Wherefore do the wicked live,
Become old, yea, wax mighty in power? ⁸ Their seed is established with them in their sight,
And their offspring before their eyes. ⁹ Their houses are safe from fear,
Neither is the rod of God upon them. ¹⁰ Their bull gendereth, and faileth not;
Their cow calveth, and casteth not her calf. ¹¹ They send forth their little ones like a flock,
And their children dance. ¹² They sing to the timbrel and harp,
And rejoice at the sound of the pipe. ¹³ They spend their days in prosperity,
And in a moment they go down to Sheol. ¹⁴ And they say unto God, Depart from us;
For we desire not the knowledge of thy ways. ¹⁵ What is the Almighty, that we should serve him?
And what profit should we have, if we pray unto him?

²⁵ And if it be not so now, who will prove me a liar,
And make my speech nothing worth?

¹⁴ From men by thy hand, O Jehovah,
From men of the world, whose portion is in [this] life,
And whose belly thou fillest with thy treasure:
They are satisfied with children,
And leave the rest of their substance to their babes.

³ For I was envious at the arrogant,
When I saw the prosperity of the wicked. ⁴ For there are no pangs in their death;
But their strength is firm. ⁵ They are not in trouble as [other] men;
Neither are they plagued like [other] men. ⁶ Therefore pride is as a chain about their neck;
Violence covereth them as a garment. ⁷ Their eyes stand out with fatness:
They have more than heart could wish.

¹ Righteous art thou, O Jehovah, when I contend with thee; yet would I reason the cause with thee: wherefore doth the way of the wicked prosper? wherefore are all they at ease that deal very treacherously? ² Thou hast planted them, yea, they have taken root; they grow, yea, they bring forth fruit: thou art near in their mouth, and far from their heart.

⁴ Because of the ground which is cracked, for that no rain hath been in the land, the plowmen are put to shame, they cover their heads.

¹⁷ The sentence is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones; to the intent that the living may know that the Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the lowest of men.

¹⁸ O thou king, the Most High God gave Nebuchadnezzar thy father the kingdom, and greatness, and glory, and majesty: ¹⁹ and because of the greatness that he gave him, all the peoples, nations, and languages trembled and feared before him: whom he would he slew, and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he raised up, and whom he would he put down. ²⁰ But when his heart was lifted up, and his spirit was hardened so that he dealt proudly, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him: ²¹ and he was driven from the sons of men, and his heart was made like the beasts', and his dwelling was with the wild asses; he was fed with grass like oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven; until he knew that the Most High God ruleth in the kingdom of men, and that he setteth up over it whomsoever he will.

⁷ After this I saw in the night-visions, and, behold, a fourth beast, terrible and powerful, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth; it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with its feet: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns. ⁸ I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another horn, a little one, before which three of the first horns were plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of a man, and a mouth speaking great things.
⁹ I beheld till thrones were placed, and one that was ancient of days did sit: his raiment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames, [and] the wheels thereof burning fire. ¹⁰ A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousands of thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened. ¹¹ I beheld at that time because of the voice of the great words which the horn spake; I beheld even till the beast was slain, and its body destroyed, and it was given to be burned with fire. ¹² And as for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was taken away: yet their lives were prolonged for a season and a time.
¹³ I saw in the night-visions, and, behold, there came with the clouds of heaven one like unto a son of man, and he came even to the ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. ¹⁴ And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all the peoples, nations, and languages should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.
¹⁵ As for me, Daniel, my spirit was grieved in the midst of my body, and the visions of my head troubled me. ¹⁶ I came near unto one of them that stood by, and asked him the truth concerning all this. So he told me, and made me know the interpretation of the things. ¹⁷ These great beasts, which are four, are four kings, that shall arise out of the earth. ¹⁸ But the saints of the Most High shall receive the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, even for ever and ever. ¹⁹ Then I desired to know the truth concerning the fourth beast, which was diverse from all of them, exceeding terrible, whose teeth were of iron, and its nails of brass; which devoured, brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with its feet; ²⁰ and concerning the ten horns that were on its head, and the other [horn] which came up, and before which three fell, even that horn that had eyes, and a mouth that spake great things, whose look was more stout than its fellows. ²¹ I beheld, and the same horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against them; ²² until the ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of the Most High, and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom.
²³ Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be a fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all the kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces. ²⁴ And as for the ten horns, out of this kingdom shall ten kings arise: and another shall arise after them; and he shall be diverse from the former, and he shall put down three kings. ²⁵ And he shall speak words against the Most High, and shall wear out the saints of the Most High; and he shall think to change the times and the law; and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and half a time. ²⁶ But the judgment shall be set, and they shall take away his dominion, to consume and to destroy it unto the end. ²⁷ And the kingdom and the dominion, and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High: his kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him. ²⁸ Here is the end of the matter. As for me, Daniel, my thoughts much troubled me, and my countenance was changed in me: but I kept the matter in my heart.

¹⁴ and makest men as the fishes of the sea, as the creeping things, that have no ruler over them? ¹⁵ He taketh up all of them with the angle, he catcheth them in his net, and gathereth them in his drag: therefore he rejoiceth and is glad. ¹⁶ Therefore he sacrificeth unto his net, and burneth incense unto his drag; because by them his portion is fat, and his food plenteous. ¹⁷ Shall he therefore empty his net, and spare not to slay the nations continually?

¹⁴ So the posts that rode upon swift steeds that were used in the king's service went out, being hastened and pressed on by the king's commandment; and the decree was given out in Shushan the palace.

⁶ My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle,
And are spent without hope. ⁷ Oh remember that my life is a breath:
Mine eye shall no more see good.

⁵ Behold, thou hast made my days [as] handbreadths;
And my life-time is as nothing before thee:
Surely every man at his best estate is altogether vanity. [Selah

¹¹ When thou with rebukes dost correct man for iniquity,
Thou makest his beauty to consume away like a moth:
Surely every man is vanity. [Selah

⁴⁷ Oh remember how short my time is:
For what vanity hast thou created all the children of men!

⁹ For all our days are passed away in thy wrath:
We bring our years to an end as a sigh. ¹⁰ The days of our years are threescore years and ten,
Or even by reason of strength fourscore years;
Yet is their pride but labor and sorrow;
For it is soon gone, and we fly away.

¹⁴ whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. What is your life? For ye are a vapor that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

²³ Saul and Jonathan were lovely and pleasant in their lives,
And in their death they were not divided:
They were swifter than eagles,
They were stronger than lions.

²⁷ Is it at thy command that the eagle mounteth up,
And maketh her nest on high? ²⁸ On the cliff she dwelleth, and maketh her home,
Upon the point of the cliff, and the stronghold. ²⁹ From thence she spieth out the prey;
Her eyes behold it afar off. ³⁰ Her young ones also suck up blood:
And where the slain are, there is she.

⁵ Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not?
For [riches] certainly make themselves wings,
Like an eagle that flieth toward heaven.

² that sendeth ambassadors by the sea, even in vessels of papyrus upon the waters, [saying], Go, ye swift messengers, to a nation tall and smooth, to a people terrible from their beginning onward, a nation that meteth out and treadeth down, whose land the rivers divide!

¹³ Behold, he shall come up as clouds, and his chariots [shall be] as the whirlwind: his horses are swifter than eagles. Woe unto us! for we are ruined.

¹⁹ Our pursuers were swifter than the eagles of the heavens:
They chased us upon the mountains, they laid wait for us in the wilderness.

⁸ Their horses also are swifter than leopards, and are more fierce than the evening wolves; and their horsemen press proudly on: yea, their horsemen come from far; they fly as an eagle that hasteth to devour.

¹¹ Therefore I will not refrain my mouth;
I will speak in the anguish of my spirit;
I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.

¹³ When I say, My bed shall comfort me,
My couch shall ease my complaint;

² In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord:
My hand was stretched out in the night, and slacked not;
My soul refused to be comforted. ³ I remember God, and am disquieted:
I complain, and my spirit is overwhelmed. [Selah

¹⁸ Oh that I could comfort myself against sorrow! my heart is faint within me.

⁷ Thou shalt not take the name of Jehovah thy God in vain; for Jehovah will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

²⁵ For the thing which I fear cometh upon me,
And that which I am afraid of cometh unto me.

²⁰ Though I be righteous, mine own mouth shall condemn me:
Though I be perfect, it shall prove me perverse. ²¹ I am perfect; I regard not myself;
I despise my life.

¹⁴ If I sin, then thou markest me,
And thou wilt not acquit me from mine iniquity.

¹⁶ But now thou numberest my steps:
Dost thou not watch over my sin?

⁶ Even when I remember I am troubled,
And horror taketh hold on my flesh.

¹⁵ I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up:
While I suffer thy terrors I am distracted. ¹⁶ Thy fierce wrath is gone over me;
Thy terrors have cut me off.

¹²⁰ My flesh trembleth for fear of thee;
And I am afraid of thy judgments.

²² It is all one; therefore I say,
He destroyeth the perfect and the wicked.

⁷ Although thou knowest that I am not wicked,
And there is none that can deliver out of thy hand?

¹⁴ If I sin, then thou markest me,
And thou wilt not acquit me from mine iniquity. ¹⁵ If I be wicked, woe unto me;
And if I be righteous, yet shall I not lift up my head;
Being filled with ignominy,
And looking upon mine affliction. ¹⁶ And if [my head] exalt itself, thou huntest me as a lion;
And again thou showest thyself marvellous upon me. ¹⁷ Thou renewest thy witnesses against me,
And increasest thine indignation upon me:
Changes and warfare are with me.

¹⁶ Lo, their prosperity is not in their hand:
The counsel of the wicked is far from me.
¹⁷ How oft is it that the lamp of the wicked is put out?
That their calamity cometh upon them?
That [God] distributeth sorrows in his anger?

²⁷ Behold, I know your thoughts,
And the devices wherewith ye would wrong me.

⁵ Is not thy wickedness great?
Neither is there any end to thine iniquities. ⁶ For thou hast taken pledges of thy brother for nought,
And stripped the naked of their clothing. ⁷ Thou hast not given water to the weary to drink,
And thou hast withholden bread from the hungry. ⁸ But as for the mighty man, he had the earth;
And the honorable man, he dwelt in it. ⁹ Thou hast sent widows away empty,
And the arms of the fatherless have been broken. ¹⁰ Therefore snares are round about thee,
And sudden fear troubleth thee, ¹¹ Or darkness, so that thou canst not see,
And abundance of waters cover thee.
¹² Is not God in the height of heaven?
And behold the height of the stars, how high they are! ¹³ And thou sayest, What doth God know?
Can he judge through the thick darkness? ¹⁴ Thick clouds are a covering to him, so that he seeth not;
And he walketh on the vault of heaven. ¹⁵ Wilt thou keep the old way
Which wicked men have trodden? ¹⁶ Who were snatched away before their time,
Whose foundation was poured out as a stream, ¹⁷ Who said unto God, Depart from us;
And, What can the Almighty do for us? ¹⁸ Yet he filled their houses with good things:
But the counsel of the wicked is far from me. ¹⁹ The righteous see it, and are glad;
And the innocent laugh them to scorn, ²⁰ [Saying], Surely they that did rise up against us are cut off,
And the remnant of them the fire hath consumed.
²¹ Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace:
Thereby good shall come unto thee. ²² Receive, I pray thee, the law from his mouth,
And lay up his words in thy heart. ²³ If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up,
If thou put away unrighteousness far from thy tents. ²⁴ And lay thou [thy] treasure in the dust,
And [the gold of] Ophir among the stones of the brooks; ²⁵ And the Almighty will be thy treasure,
And precious silver unto thee. ²⁶ For then shalt thou delight thyself in the Almighty,
And shalt lift up thy face unto God. ²⁷ Thou shalt make thy prayer unto him, and he will hear thee;
And thou shalt pay thy vows. ²⁸ Thou shalt also decree a thing, and it shall be established unto thee;
And light shall shine upon thy ways. ²⁹ When they cast [thee] down, thou shalt say, [There is] lifting up;
And the humble person he will save. ³⁰ He will deliver [even] him that is not innocent:
Yea, he shall be delivered through the cleanness of thy hands.

³³ Jehovah will not leave him in his hand,
Nor condemn him when he is judged.

¹³ Surely in vain have I cleansed my heart,
And washed my hands in innocency;

³⁵ Yet thou saidst, I am innocent; surely his anger is turned away from me. Behold, I will enter into judgment with thee, because thou sayest, I have not sinned.

⁷ If my step hath turned out of the way,
And my heart walked after mine eyes,
And if any spot hath cleaved to my hands:

⁶ I will wash my hands in innocency:
So will I compass thine altar, O Jehovah;

¹³ He that covereth his transgressions shall not prosper:
But whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall obtain mercy.

¹⁶ Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil; ¹⁷ learn to do well; seek justice, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.
¹⁸ Come now, and let us reason together, saith Jehovah: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

²² For though thou wash thee with lye, and take thee much soap, yet thine iniquity is marked before me, saith the Lord Jehovah.

¹⁴ O Jerusalem, wash thy heart from wickedness, that thou mayest be saved. How long shall thine evil thoughts lodge within thee?

³ For being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God.

⁶ Thine own mouth condemneth thee, and not I;
Yea, thine own lips testify against thee.

⁶ Their webs shall not become garments, neither shall they cover themselves with their works: their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands.

⁶ For we are all become as one that is unclean, and all our righteousnesses are as a polluted garment: and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, take us away.

⁸ Yea verily, and I count all things to be loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but refuse, that I may gain Christ, ⁹ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of mine own, [even] that which is of the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith:

¹⁹ God is not a man, that he should lie,
Neither the son of man, that he should repent:
Hath he said, and will he not do it?
Or hath he spoken, and will he not make it good?

⁷ But Jehovah said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have rejected him: for [Jehovah seeth] not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but Jehovah looketh on the heart.

¹⁸ Behold now, I have set my cause in order;
I know that I am righteous. ¹⁹ Who is he that will contend with me?
For then would I hold my peace and give up the ghost.
²⁰ Only do not two things unto me;
Then will I not hide myself from thy face: ²¹ Withdraw thy hand far from me;
And let not thy terror make me afraid. ²² Then call thou, and I will answer;
Or let me speak, and answer thou me. ²³ How many are mine iniquities and sins?
Make me to know my transgression and my sin.

¹² Behold, I will answer thee, in this thou art not just;
For God is greater than man.

⁵ Look unto the heavens, and see;
And behold the skies, which are higher than thou. ⁶ If thou hast sinned, what effectest thou against him?
And if thy transgressions be multiplied, what doest thou unto him? ⁷ If thou be righteous, what givest thou him?
Or what receiveth he of thy hand?

¹⁰ Whatsoever hath been, the name thereof was given long ago; and it is known what man is; neither can he contend with him that is mightier than he.

¹⁹ Behold, he shall come up like a lion from the pride of the Jordan against the strong habitation: for I will suddenly make them run away from it; and whoso is chosen, him will I appoint over it: for who is like me? and who will appoint me a time? and who is the shepherd that will stand before me?

²⁵ If one man sin against another, God shall judge him; but if a man sin against Jehovah, who shall entreat for him? Notwithstanding, they hearkened not unto the voice of their father, because Jehovah was minded to slay them.

¹⁶ Then there came two women that were harlots, unto the king, and stood before him. ¹⁷ And the one woman said, Oh, my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house. ¹⁸ And it came to pass the third day after I was delivered, that this woman was delivered also; and we were together; there was no stranger with us in the house, save we two in the house. ¹⁹ And this woman's child died in the night, because she lay upon it. ²⁰ And she arose at midnight, and took my son from beside me, while thy handmaid slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom. ²¹ And when I rose in the morning to give my child suck, behold, it was dead; but when I had looked at it in the morning, behold, it was not my son, whom I did bear. ²² And the other woman said, Nay; but the living is my son, and the dead is thy son. And this said, No; but the dead is thy son, and the living is my son. Thus they spake before the king.
²³ Then said the king, The one saith, This is my son that liveth, and thy son is the dead: and the other saith, Nay; but thy son is the dead, and my son is the living. ²⁴ And the king said, Fetch me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king. ²⁵ And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other. ²⁶ Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her heart yearned over her son, and she said, Oh, my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, It shall be neither mine nor thine; divide it. ²⁷ Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she is the mother thereof. ²⁸ And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do justice.

²³ Therefore he said that he would destroy them,
Had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach,
To turn away his wrath, lest he should destroy [them].

¹ My little children, these things write I unto you that ye may not sin. And if any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: ² and he is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for the whole world.

¹¹ Shall not his majesty make you afraid,
And his dread fall upon you?

²⁰ Only do not two things unto me;
Then will I not hide myself from thy face: ²¹ Withdraw thy hand far from me;
And let not thy terror make me afraid. ²² Then call thou, and I will answer;
Or let me speak, and answer thou me.

¹⁵ Therefore am I terrified at his presence;
When I consider, I am afraid of him.

² Oh that I were as in the months of old,
As in the days when God watched over me; ³ When his lamp shined upon my head,
And by his light I walked through darkness; ⁴ As I was in the ripeness of my days,
When the friendship of God was upon my tent; ⁵ When the Almighty was yet with me,
And my children were about me; ⁶ When my steps were washed with butter,
And the rock poured me out streams of oil! ⁷ When I went forth to the gate unto the city,
When I prepared my seat in the street, ⁸ The young men saw me and hid themselves,
And the aged rose up and stood; ⁹ The princes refrained from talking,
And laid their hand on their mouth; ¹⁰ The voice of the nobels was hushed,
And their tongue cleaved to the roof of their mouth. ¹¹ For when the ear heard [me], then it blessed me;
And when the eye saw [me], it gave witness unto me: ¹² Because I delivered the poor that cried,
The fatherless also, that had none to help him. ¹³ The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me;
And I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy. ¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me:
My justice was as a robe and a diadem. ¹⁵ I was eyes to the blind,
And feet was I to the lame. ¹⁶ I was a father to the needy:
And the cause of him that I knew not I searched out. ¹⁷ And I brake the jaws of the unrighteous,
And plucked the prey out of his teeth. ¹⁸ Then I said, I shall die in my nest,
And I shall multiply my days as the sand: ¹⁹ My root is spread out to the waters,
And the dew lieth all night upon my branch; ²⁰ My glory is fresh in me,
And my bow is renewed in my hand. ²¹ Unto me men gave ear, and waited,
And kept silence for my counsel. ²² After my words they spake not again;
And my speech distilled upon them. ²³ And they waited for me as for the rain;
And they opened their mouth wide [as] for the latter rain. ²⁴ I smiled on them, when they had no confidence;
And the light of my countenance they cast not down. ²⁵ I chose out their way, and sat [as] chief,
And dwelt as a king in the army,
As one that comforteth the mourners.

²³ For calamity from God is a terror to me,
And by reason of his majesty I can do nothing.

⁷ Behold, my terror shall not make thee afraid,
Neither shall my pressure be heavy upon thee.

¹ Yea, at this my heart trembleth,
And is moved out of its place.

¹⁰ Remove thy stroke away from me:
I am consumed by the blow of thy hand.

¹¹ Who knoweth the power of thine anger,
And thy wrath according to the fear that is due unto thee?
