¹ These also are proverbs of Solomon, which the men of Hezekiah king of Judah copied out.
² It is the glory of God to conceal a thing;
But the glory of kings is to search out a matter. ³ As the heavens for height, and the earth for depth,
So the heart of kings is unsearchable. ⁴ Take away the dross from the silver,
And there cometh forth a vessel for the refiner: ⁵ Take away the wicked [from] before the king,
And his throne shall be established in righteousness. ⁶ Put not thyself forward in the presence of the king,
And stand not in the place of great men: ⁷ For better is it that it be said unto thee, Come up hither,
Than that thou shouldest be put lower in the presence of the prince,
Whom thine eyes have seen. ⁸ Go not forth hastily to strive,
Lest [thou know not] what to do in the end thereof,
When thy neighbor hath put thee to shame. ⁹ Debate thy cause with thy neighbor [himself],
And disclose not the secret of another; ¹⁰ Lest he that heareth it revile thee,
And thine infamy turn not away. ¹¹ A word fitly spoken
Is [like] apples of gold in network of silver. ¹² [As] an ear-ring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold,
[So is] a wise reprover upon an obedient ear. ¹³ As the cold of snow in the time of harvest,
[So is] a faithful messenger to them that send him;
For he refresheth the soul of his masters. ¹⁴ [As] clouds and wind without rain,
[So is] he that boasteth himself of his gifts falsely. ¹⁵ By long forbearing is a ruler persuaded,
And a soft tongue breaketh the bone. ¹⁶ Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee,
Lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it. ¹⁷ Let thy foot be seldom in thy neighbor's house,
Lest he be weary of thee, and hate thee. ¹⁸ A man that beareth false witness against his neighbor
Is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow. ¹⁹ Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble
Is [like] a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint. ²⁰ [As] one that taketh off a garment in cold weather, [and as] vinegar upon soda,
So is he that singeth songs to a heavy heart. ²¹ If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat;
And if he be thirsty, give him water to drink: ²² For thou wilt heap coals of fire upon his head,
And Jehovah will reward thee. ²³ The north wind bringeth forth rain:
So doth a backbiting tongue an angry countenance. ²⁴ It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop,
Than with a contentious woman in a wide house. ²⁵ [As] cold waters to a thirsty soul,
So is good news from a far country. ²⁶ [As] a troubled fountain, and a corrupted spring,
[So is] a righteous man that giveth way before the wicked. ²⁷ It is not good to eat much honey:
So [for men] to search out their own glory is grievous. ²⁸ He whose spirit is without restraint
Is [like] a city that is broken down and without walls.

³² And he spake three thousand proverbs; and his songs were a thousand and five.

¹ The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel:

A wise son maketh a glad father;
But a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother.

⁹ And further, because the Preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he pondered, and sought out, [and] set in order many proverbs.

¹ The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.

²² Then came Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, that was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.

² And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, unto Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.

¹ The word of Jehovah that came unto Hosea the son of Beeri, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel.

¹ The word of Jehovah that came to Micah the Morashtite in the days of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, which he saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem.

²⁹ The secret things belong unto Jehovah our God; but the things that are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.

⁹ Give thy servant therefore an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and evil; for who is able to judge this thy great people?
¹⁰ And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. ¹¹ And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life, neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies, but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern justice; ¹² behold, I have done according to thy word: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there hath been none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee. ¹³ And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches and honor, so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee, all thy days. ¹⁴ And if thou wilt walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as thy father David did walk, then I will lengthen thy days. ¹⁵ And Solomon awoke; and, behold, it was a dream: and he came to Jerusalem, and stood before the ark of the covenant of Jehovah, and offered up burnt-offerings, and offered peace-offerings, and made a feast to all his servants.
¹⁶ Then there came two women that were harlots, unto the king, and stood before him. ¹⁷ And the one woman said, Oh, my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house. ¹⁸ And it came to pass the third day after I was delivered, that this woman was delivered also; and we were together; there was no stranger with us in the house, save we two in the house. ¹⁹ And this woman's child died in the night, because she lay upon it. ²⁰ And she arose at midnight, and took my son from beside me, while thy handmaid slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom. ²¹ And when I rose in the morning to give my child suck, behold, it was dead; but when I had looked at it in the morning, behold, it was not my son, whom I did bear. ²² And the other woman said, Nay; but the living is my son, and the dead is thy son. And this said, No; but the dead is thy son, and the living is my son. Thus they spake before the king.
²³ Then said the king, The one saith, This is my son that liveth, and thy son is the dead: and the other saith, Nay; but thy son is the dead, and my son is the living. ²⁴ And the king said, Fetch me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king. ²⁵ And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other. ²⁶ Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her heart yearned over her son, and she said, Oh, my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, It shall be neither mine nor thine; divide it. ²⁷ Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she is the mother thereof. ²⁸ And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God was in him, to do justice.

²⁹ And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea-shore. ³⁰ And Solomon's wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the children of the east, and all the wisdom of Egypt. ³¹ For he was wiser than all men; than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, and Calcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol: and his fame was in all the nations round about. ³² And he spake three thousand proverbs; and his songs were a thousand and five. ³³ And he spake of trees, from the cedar that is in Lebanon even unto the hyssop that springeth out of the wall; he spake also of beasts, and of birds, and of creeping things, and of fishes. ³⁴ And there came of all peoples to hear the wisdom of Solomon, from all kings of the earth, who had heard of his wisdom.

¹⁵ that search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers: so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time; for which cause was this city laid waste.

¹⁹ And I decreed, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made therein.

¹⁷ Now therefore, if it seem good to the king, let there be search made in the king's treasure-house, which is there at Babylon, whether it be so, that a decree was made of Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem; and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.

⁷ Canst thou by searching find out God?
Canst thou find out the Almighty unto perfection? ⁸ It is high as heaven; what canst thou do?
Deeper than Sheol; what canst thou know?

¹⁶ I was a father to the needy:
And the cause of him that I knew not I searched out.

⁴ Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth?
Declare, if thou hast understanding. ⁵ Who determined the measures thereof, if thou knowest?
Or who stretched the line upon it? ⁶ Whereupon were the foundations thereof fastened?
Or who laid the corner-stone thereof, ⁷ When the morning stars sang together,
And all the sons of God shouted for joy?
⁸ Or [who] shut up the sea with doors,
When it brake forth, [as if] it had issued out of the womb; ⁹ When I made clouds the garment thereof,
And thick darkness a swaddling-band for it, ¹⁰ And marked out for it my bound,
And set bars and doors, ¹¹ And said, Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further;
And here shall thy proud waves be stayed?
¹² Hast thou commanded the morning since thy days [began],
[And] caused the dayspring to know its place; ¹³ That it might take hold of the ends of the earth,
And the wicked be shaken out of it? ¹⁴ It is changed as clay under the seal;
And [all things] stand forth as a garment: ¹⁵ And from the wicked their light is withholden,
And the high arm is broken.
¹⁶ Hast thou entered into the springs of the sea?
Or hast thou walked in the recesses of the deep? ¹⁷ Have the gates of death been revealed unto thee?
Or hast thou seen the gates of the shadow of death? ¹⁸ Hast thou comprehended the earth in its breadth?
Declare, if thou knowest it all.
¹⁹ Where is the way to the dwelling of light?
And as for darkness, where is the place thereof, ²⁰ That thou shouldest take it to the bound thereof,
And that thou shouldest discern the paths to the house thereof? ²¹ [Doubtless], thou knowest, for thou wast then born,
And the number of thy days is great! ²² Hast thou entered the treasuries of the snow,
Or hast thou seen the treasures of the hail, ²³ Which I have reserved against the time of trouble,
Against the day of battle and war? ²⁴ By what way is the light parted,
Or the east wind scattered upon the earth?
²⁵ Who hath cleft a channel for the waterflood,
Or the way for the lightning of the thunder; ²⁶ To cause it to rain on a land where no man is;
On the wilderness, wherein there is no man; ²⁷ To satisfy the waste and desolate [ground],
And to cause the tender grass to spring forth? ²⁸ Hath the rain a father?
Or who hath begotten the drops of dew? ²⁹ Out of whose womb came the ice?
And the hoary frost of heaven, who hath gendered it? ³⁰ The waters hide themselves [and become] like stone,
And the face of the deep is frozen.

⁴ Their young ones become strong, they grow up in the open field;
They go forth, and return not again.
⁵ Who hath sent out the wild ass free?
Or who hath loosed the bonds of the swift ass, ⁶ Whose home I have made the wilderness,
And the salt land his dwelling-place? ⁷ He scorneth the tumult of the city,
Neither heareth he the shoutings of the driver. ⁸ The range of the mountains is his pasture,
And he searcheth after every green thing. ⁹ Will the wild-ox be content to serve thee?
Or will he abide by thy crib? ¹⁰ Canst thou bind the wild-ox with his band in the furrow?
Or will he harrow the valleys after thee? ¹¹ Wilt thou trust him, because his strength is great?
Or wilt thou leave to him thy labor? ¹² Wilt thou confide in him, that he will bring home thy seed,
And gather [the grain] of thy threshing-floor?
¹³ The wings of the ostrich wave proudly;
[But] are they the pinions and plumage of love? ¹⁴ For she leaveth her eggs on the earth,
And warmeth them in the dust, ¹⁵ And forgetteth that the foot may crush them,
Or that the wild beast may trample them. ¹⁶ She dealeth hardly with her young ones, as if they were not hers:
Though her labor be in vain, [she is] without fear; ¹⁷ Because God hath deprived her of wisdom,
Neither hath he imparted to her understanding. ¹⁸ What time she lifteth up herself on high,
She scorneth the horse and his rider. ¹⁹ Hast thou given the horse [his] might?
Hast thou clothed his neck with the quivering mane? ²⁰ Hast thou made him to leap as a locust?
The glory of his snorting is terrible. ²¹ He paweth in the valley, and rejoiceth in his strength:
He goeth out to meet the armed men. ²² He mocketh at fear, and is not dismayed;
Neither turneth he back from the sword. ²³ The quiver rattleth against him,
The flashing spear and the javelin. ²⁴ He swalloweth the ground with fierceness and rage;
Neither believeth he that it is the voice of the trumpet. ²⁵ As oft as the trumpet [soundeth] he saith, Aha!
And he smelleth the battle afar off,
The thunder of the captains, and the shouting.
²⁶ Is it by thy wisdom that the hawk soareth,
[And] stretcheth her wings toward the south? ²⁷ Is it at thy command that the eagle mounteth up,
And maketh her nest on high? ²⁸ On the cliff she dwelleth, and maketh her home,
Upon the point of the cliff, and the stronghold. ²⁹ From thence she spieth out the prey;
Her eyes behold it afar off. ³⁰ Her young ones also suck up blood:
And where the slain are, there is she.

² Shall he that cavilleth contend with the Almighty?
He that argueth with God, let him answer it.

³ Who is this that hideth counsel without knowledge?
Therefore have I uttered that which I understood not,
Things too wonderful for me, which I knew not.

³³ O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past tracing out! ³⁴ For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor?

²⁹ And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea-shore.

¹¹ For as the heavens are high above the earth,
So great is his lovingkindness toward them that fear him.

¹¹ Ask thee a sign of Jehovah thy God; ask it either in the depth, or in the height above.

⁹ For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

³⁹ nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

⁷ that the proof of your faith, [being] more precious than gold that perisheth though it is proved by fire, may be found unto praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ:

³ The refining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold;
But Jehovah trieth the hearts.

²⁵ and I will turn my hand upon thee, and thoroughly purge away thy dross, and will take away all thy tin; ²⁶ and I will restore thy judges as at the first, and thy counsellors as at the beginning: afterward thou shalt be called The city of righteousness, a faithful town. ²⁷ Zion shall be redeemed with justice, and her converts with righteousness.

¹⁸ Son of man, the house of Israel is become dross unto me: all of them are brass and tin and iron and lead, in the midst of the furnace; they are the dross of silver.

² But who can abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap: ³ and he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the sons of Levi, and refine them as gold and silver; and they shall offer unto Jehovah offerings in righteousness.

²⁰ Now in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some unto honor, and some unto dishonor. ²¹ If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honor, sanctified, meet for the master's use, prepared unto every good work.

³³ So shall their blood return upon the head of Joab, and upon the head of his seed for ever: but unto David, and unto his seed, and unto his house, and unto his throne, shall there be peace for ever from Jehovah.

⁴⁶ So the king commanded Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he went out, and fell upon him, so that he died. And the kingdom was established in the hand of Solomon.

¹⁰ So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king's wrath pacified.

¹¹ wherein the king granted the Jews that were in every city to gather themselves together, and to stand for their life, to destroy, to slay, and to cause to perish, all the power of the people and province that would assault them, [their] little ones and women, and to take the spoil of them for a prey, ¹² upon one day in all the provinces of king Ahasuerus, [namely], upon the thirteenth [day] of the twelfth month, which is the month Adar. ¹³ A copy of the writing, that the decree should be given out in every province, was published unto all the peoples, and that the Jews should be ready against that day to avenge themselves on their enemies. ¹⁴ So the posts that rode upon swift steeds that were used in the king's service went out, being hastened and pressed on by the king's commandment; and the decree was given out in Shushan the palace.
¹⁵ And Mordecai went forth from the presence of the king in royal apparel of blue and white, and with a great crown of gold, and with a robe of fine linen and purple: and the city of Shushan shouted and was glad. ¹⁶ The Jews had light and gladness, and joy and honor. ¹⁷ And in every province, and in every city, whithersoever the king's commandment and his decree came, the Jews had gladness and joy, a feast and a good day. And many from among the peoples of the land became Jews; for the fear of the Jews was fallen upon them.

⁷ He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house:
He that speaketh falsehood shall not be established before mine eyes. ⁸ Morning by morning will I destroy all the wicked of the land;
To cut off all the workers of iniquity from the city of Jehovah.

¹² It is an abomination to kings to commit wickedness;
For the throne is established by righteousness.

⁸ A king that sitteth on the throne of judgment
Scattereth away all evil with his eyes.

²⁸ Kindness and truth preserve the king;
And his throne is upholden by kindness.

¹⁴ The king that faithfully judgeth the poor,
His throne shall be established for ever.

⁷ Of the increase of his government and of peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of Jehovah of hosts will perform this.

⁵ And a throne shall be established in lovingkindness; and one shall sit thereon in truth, in the tent of David, judging, and seeking justice, and swift to do righteousness.

¹¹ And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt?

²⁰ And as for thine asses that were lost three days ago, set not thy mind on them; for they are found. And for whom is all that is desirable in Israel? Is it not for thee, and for all thy father's house? ²¹ And Saul answered and said, Am not I a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? wherefore then speakest thou to me after this manner?
²² And Samuel took Saul and his servant, and brought them into the guest-chamber, and made them sit in the chiefest place among them that were bidden, who were about thirty persons.

¹⁷ And Samuel said, Though thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel? And Jehovah anointed thee king over Israel;

¹⁸ And David said unto Saul, Who am I, and what is my life, [or] my father's family in Israel, that I should be son-in-law to the king? ¹⁹ But it came to pass at the time when Merab, Saul's daughter, should have been given to David, that she was given unto Adriel the Meholathite to wife. ²⁰ And Michal, Saul's daughter, loved David: and they told Saul, and the thing pleased him. ²¹ And Saul said, I will give him her, that she may be a snare to him, and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him. Wherefore Saul said to David, Thou shalt this day be my son-in-law a second time.
²² And Saul commanded his servants, [saying], Commune with David secretly, and say, Behold, the king hath delight in thee, and all his servants love thee: now therefore be the king's son-in-law. ²³ And Saul's servants spake those words in the ears of David. And David said, Seemeth it to you a light thing to be the king's son-in-law, seeing that I am a poor man, and lightly esteemed?

⁸ Now therefore thus shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith Jehovah of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, from following the sheep, that thou shouldest be prince over my people, over Israel; ⁹ and I have been with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies from before thee; and I will make thee a great name, like unto the name of the great ones that are in the earth. ¹⁰ And I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place, and be moved no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as at the first, ¹¹ and [as] from the day that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel; and I will cause thee to rest from all thine enemies. Moreover Jehovah telleth thee that Jehovah will make thee a house. ¹² When thy days are fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, that shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. ¹³ He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever. ¹⁴ I will be his father, and he shall be my son: if he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men; ¹⁵ but my lovingkindness shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee. ¹⁶ And thy house and thy kingdom shall be made sure for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever. ¹⁷ According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.

Jehovah, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty;
Neither do I exercise myself in great matters,
Or in things too wonderful for me.

¹⁹ Better it is to be of a lowly spirit with the poor,
Than to divide the spoil with the proud.

²⁷ It is not good to eat much honey:
So [for men] to search out their own glory is grievous.

² Let another man praise thee, and not thine own mouth;
A stranger, and not thine own lips.

⁶ Then said I, Ah, Lord Jehovah! behold, I know not how to speak; for I am a child. ⁷ But Jehovah said unto me, Say not, I am a child; for to whomsoever I shall send thee thou shalt go, and whatsoever I shall command thee thou shalt speak. ⁸ Be not afraid because of them; for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith Jehovah. ⁹ Then Jehovah put forth his hand, and touched my mouth; and Jehovah said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth: ¹⁰ see, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to pluck up and to break down and to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant.

¹² Also Amaziah said unto Amos, O thou seer, go, flee thou away into the land of Judah, and there eat bread, and prophesy there: ¹³ but prophesy not again any more at Beth-el; for it is the king's sanctuary, and it is a royal house.
¹⁴ Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son; but I was a herdsman, and a dresser of sycomore-trees: ¹⁵ and Jehovah took me from following the flock, and Jehovah said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.

⁷ And he spake a parable unto those that were bidden, when he marked how they chose out the chief seats; saying unto them, ⁸ { When thou art bidden of any man to a marriage feast, sit not down in the chief seat; lest haply a more honorable man than thou be bidden of him, ⁹ and he that bade thee and him shall come and say to thee, Give this man place; and then thou shalt begin with shame to take the lowest place. ¹⁰ But when thou art bidden, go and sit down in the lowest place; that when he that hath bidden thee cometh, he may say to thee, Friend, go up higher: then shalt thou have glory in the presence of all that sit at meat with thee. ¹¹ For every one that exalteth himself shall be humbled; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.}

¹⁴ I say unto you, This man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be humbled; but he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.}

⁵ Likewise, ye younger, be subject unto the elder. Yea, all of you gird yourselves with humility, to serve one another: for God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble.

¹ After these things I saw, and behold, a door opened in heaven, and the first voice that I heard, [a voice] as of a trumpet speaking with me, one saying, Come up hither, and I will show thee the things which must come to pass hereafter.

¹⁴ And Abner said to Joab, Let the young men, I pray thee, arise and play before us. And Joab said, Let them arise. ¹⁵ Then they arose and went over by number: twelve for Benjamin, and for Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David. ¹⁶ And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and [thrust] his sword in his fellow's side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Helkath-hazzurim, which is in Gibeon.

²⁶ Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren?

⁸ Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash, the son of Jehoahaz son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come, let us look one another in the face. ⁹ And Jehoash the king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah, saying, The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son to wife: and there passed by a wild beast that was in Lebanon, and trod down the thistle. ¹⁰ Thou hast indeed smitten Edom, and thy heart hath lifted thee up: glory thereof, and abide at home; for why shouldest thou meddle to [thy] hurt, that thou shouldest fall, even thou, and Judah with thee?
¹¹ But Amaziah would not hear. So Jehoash king of Israel went up; and he and Amaziah king of Judah looked one another in the face at Beth-shemesh, which belongeth to Judah. ¹² And Judah was put to the worse before Israel; and they fled every man to his tent.

¹² There is a way which seemeth right unto a man;
But the end thereof are the ways of death.

¹⁴ The beginning of strife is [as] when one letteth out water:
Therefore leave off contention, before there is quarrelling.

⁶ A fool's lips enter into contention,
And his mouth calleth for stripes.

³³ For the churning of milk bringeth forth butter,
And the wringing of the nose bringeth forth blood;
So the forcing of wrath bringeth forth strife.

³¹ the prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?

²⁵ Agree with thine adversary quickly, while thou art with him in the way; lest haply the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.

³¹ Or what king, as he goeth to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and take counsel whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand? ³² Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and asketh conditions of peace.

¹³ He that goeth about as a tale-bearer revealeth secrets;
But he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth a matter.

¹⁹ He that goeth about as a tale-bearer revealeth secrets;
Therefore company not with him that openeth wide his lips.

⁵ And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me: ⁶ but whoso shall cause one of these little ones that believe on me to stumble, it is profitable for him that a great millstone should be hanged about his neck, and [that] he should be sunk in the depth of the sea.
⁷ Woe unto the world because of occasions of stumbling! for it must needs be that the occasions come; but woe to that man through whom the occasion cometh! ⁸ And if thy hand or thy foot causeth thee to stumble, cut it off, and cast it from thee: it is good for thee to enter into life maimed or halt, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into the eternal fire. ⁹ And if thine eye causeth thee to stumble, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is good for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into the hell of fire. ¹⁰ See that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, that in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven.

¹² How think ye? if any man have a hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and go unto the mountains, and seek that which goeth astray? ¹³ And if so be that he find it, verily I say unto you, he rejoiceth over it more than over the ninety and nine which have not gone astray. ¹⁴ Even so it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish.
¹⁵ And if thy brother sin against thee, go, show him his fault between thee and him alone: if he hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. ¹⁶ But if he hear [thee] not, take with thee one or two more, that at the mouth of two witnesses or three every word may be established. ¹⁷ And if he refuse to hear them, tell it unto the church: and if he refuse to hear the church also, let him be unto thee as the Gentile and the publican.

³⁹ Turn away my reproach whereof I am afraid;
For thine ordinances are good.

²³ A man hath joy in the answer of his mouth;
And a word in due season, how good is it!

²⁶ He kisseth the lips
Who giveth a right answer.

¹⁰ The Preacher sought to find out acceptable words, and that which was written uprightly, [even] words of truth.

⁴ The Lord Jehovah hath given me the tongue of them that are taught, that I may know how to sustain with words him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as they that are taught.

³¹ that this shall be no grief unto thee, nor offence of heart unto my lord, either that thou hast shed blood without cause, or that my lord hath avenged himself. And when Jehovah shall have dealt well with my lord, then remember thy handmaid.
³² And David said to Abigail, Blessed be Jehovah, the God of Israel, who sent thee this day to meet me: ³³ and blessed be thy discretion, and blessed be thou, that hast kept me this day from bloodguiltiness, and from avenging myself with mine own hand. ³⁴ For in very deed, as Jehovah, the God of Israel, liveth, who hath withholden me from hurting thee, except thou hadst hasted and come to meet me, surely there had not been left unto Nabal by the morning light so much as one man-child.

¹¹ Then came there unto him all his brethren, and all his sisters, and all they that had been of his acquaintance before, and did eat bread with him in his house: and they bemoaned him, and comforted him concerning all the evil that Jehovah had brought upon him: every man also gave him a piece of money, and every one a ring of gold.

⁵ Let the righteous smite me, [it shall be] a kindness;
And let him reprove me, [it shall be as] oil upon the head;
Let not my head refuse it:
For even in their wickedness shall my prayer continue.

⁸ My son, hear the instruction of thy father,
And forsake not the law of thy mother: ⁹ For they shall be a chaplet of grace unto thy head,
And chains about thy neck.

⁸ Reprove not a scoffer, lest he hate thee:
Reprove a wise man, and he will love thee.

⁵ A fool despiseth his father's correction;
But he that regardeth reproof getteth prudence.

³¹ The ear that hearkeneth to the reproof of life
Shall abide among the wise. ³² He that refuseth correction despiseth his own soul;
But he that hearkeneth to reproof getteth understanding.

¹² The hearing ear, and the seeing eye,
Jehovah hath made even both of them.

⁵ Better is open rebuke
Than love that is hidden. ⁶ Faithful are the wounds of a friend;
But the kisses of an enemy are profuse.

¹⁷ A wicked messenger falleth into evil;
But a faithful ambassador is health.

²⁵ [As] cold waters to a thirsty soul,
So is good news from a far country.

⁶ He that sendeth a message by the hand of a fool
Cutteth off [his own] feet, [and] drinketh in damage.

²⁵ But I counted it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother and fellow-worker and fellow-soldier, and your messenger and minister to my need; ²⁶ since he longed after you all, and was sore troubled, because ye had heard that he was sick: ²⁷ for indeed he was sick nigh unto death: but God had mercy on him; and not on him only, but on me also, that I might not have sorrow upon sorrow. ²⁸ I have sent him therefore the more diligently, that, when ye see him again, ye may rejoice, and that I may be the less sorrowful. ²⁹ Receive him therefore in the Lord with all joy; and hold such in honor: ³⁰ because for the work of Christ he came nigh unto death, hazarding his life to supply that which was lacking in your service toward me.

¹¹ And Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah made him horns of iron, and said, Thus saith Jehovah, With these shalt thou push the Syrians, until they be consumed.

⁶ Most men will proclaim every one his own kindness;
But a faithful man who can find?

¹¹ For every one that exalteth himself shall be humbled; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.}

¹⁰ { Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican. ¹¹ The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as the rest of men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. ¹² I fast twice in the week; I give tithes of all that I get. ¹³ But the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote his breast, saying, God, be thou merciful to me a sinner. ¹⁴ I say unto you, This man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be humbled; but he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.}

¹³ For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, fashioning themselves into apostles of Christ. ¹⁴ And no marvel; for even Satan fashioneth himself into an angel of light. ¹⁵ It is no great thing therefore if his ministers also fashion themselves as ministers of righteousness, whose end shall be according to their works.
¹⁶ I say again, Let no man think me foolish; but if [ye do], yet as foolish receive me, that I also may glory a little. ¹⁷ That which I speak, I speak not after the Lord, but as in foolishness, in this confidence of glorying. ¹⁸ Seeing that many glory after the flesh, I will glory also.

³¹ The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, he who is blessed for evermore knoweth that I lie not.

¹⁵ forsaking the right way, they went astray, having followed the way of Balaam the [son] of Beor, who loved the hire of wrong-doing; ¹⁶ but he was rebuked for his own transgression: a dumb ass spake with man's voice and stayed the madness of the prophet. ¹⁷ These are springs without water, and mists driven by a storm; for whom the blackness of darkness hath been reserved. ¹⁸ For, uttering great swelling [words] of vanity, they entice in the lusts of the flesh, by lasciviousness, those who are just escaping from them that live in error; ¹⁹ promising them liberty, while they themselves are bondservants of corruption; for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he also brought into bondage.

¹² These are they who are hidden rocks in your love-feasts when they feast with you, shepherds that without fear feed themselves; clouds without water, carried along by winds; autumn trees without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots; ¹³ wild waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, for whom the blackness of darkness hath been reserved for ever.

¹⁶ These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their lusts (and their mouth speaketh great swelling [words]), showing respect of persons for the sake of advantage.

⁴ And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye say unto my lord Esau: Thus saith thy servant Jacob, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed until now: ⁵ and I have oxen, and asses, [and] flocks, and men-servants, and maid-servants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find favor in thy sight. ⁶ And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and moreover he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him. ⁷ Then Jacob was greatly afraid and was distressed: and he divided the people that were with him, and the flocks, and the herds, and the camels, into two companies; ⁸ and he said, If Esau come to the one company, and smite it, then the company which is left shall escape. ⁹ And Jacob said, O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac, O Jehovah, who saidst unto me, Return unto thy country, and to thy kindred, and I will do thee good: ¹⁰ I am not worthy of the least of all the lovingkindnesses, and of all the truth, which thou hast showed unto thy servant; for with my staff I passed over this Jordan; and now I am become two companies. ¹¹ Deliver me, I pray thee, from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau: for I fear him, lest he come and smite me, the mother with the children. ¹² And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.
¹³ And he lodged there that night, and took of that which he had with him a present for Esau his brother: ¹⁴ two hundred she-goats and twenty he-goats, two hundred ewes and twenty rams, ¹⁵ thirty milch camels and their colts, forty cows and ten bulls, twenty she-asses and ten foals. ¹⁶ And he delivered them into the hand of his servants, every drove by itself, and said unto his servants, Pass over before me, and put a space betwixt drove and drove. ¹⁷ And he commanded the foremost, saying, When Esau my brother meeteth thee, and asketh thee, saying, Whose art thou? and whither goest thou? and whose are these before thee? ¹⁸ then thou shalt say [They are] thy servant Jacob's; it is a present sent unto my lord Esau: and, behold, he also is behind us. ¹⁹ And he commanded also the second, and the third, and all that followed the droves, saying, On this manner shall ye speak unto Esau, when ye find him; ²⁰ and ye shall say, Moreover, behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept me. ²¹ So the present passed over before him: and he himself lodged that night in the company.

¹⁴ But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal's wife, saying, Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to salute our master; and he railed at them.

²⁴ And she fell at his feet, and said, Upon me, my lord, upon me be the iniquity; and let thy handmaid, I pray thee, speak in thine ears, and hear thou the words of thy handmaid. ²⁵ Let not my lord, I pray thee, regard this worthless fellow, even Nabal; for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him: but I thy handmaid saw not the young men of my lord, whom thou didst send. ²⁶ Now therefore, my lord, as Jehovah liveth, and as thy soul liveth, seeing Jehovah hath withholden thee from bloodguiltiness, and from avenging thyself with thine own hand, now therefore let thine enemies, and them that seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal. ²⁷ And now this present which thy servant hath brought unto my lord, let it be given unto the young men that follow my lord. ²⁸ Forgive, I pray thee, the trespass of thy handmaid: for Jehovah will certainly make my lord a sure house, because my lord fighteth the battles of Jehovah; and evil shall not be found in thee all thy days. ²⁹ And though men be risen up to pursue thee, and to seek thy soul, yet the soul of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of life with Jehovah thy God; and the souls of thine enemies, them shall he sling out, as from the hollow of a sling. ³⁰ And it shall come to pass, when Jehovah shall have done to my lord according to all the good that he hath spoken concerning thee, and shall have appointed thee prince over Israel, ³¹ that this shall be no grief unto thee, nor offence of heart unto my lord, either that thou hast shed blood without cause, or that my lord hath avenged himself. And when Jehovah shall have dealt well with my lord, then remember thy handmaid.

³⁶ And Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal's heart was merry within him, for he was very drunken: wherefore she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light. ³⁷ And it came to pass in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, that his wife told him these things, and his heart died within him, and he became as a stone. ³⁸ And it came to pass about ten days after, that Jehovah smote Nabal, so that he died.
³⁹ And when David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, Blessed be Jehovah, that hath pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and hath kept back his servant from evil: and the evil-doing of Nabal hath Jehovah returned upon his own head. And David sent and spake concerning Abigail, to take her to him to wife. ⁴⁰ And when the servants of David were come to Abigail to Carmel, they spake unto her, saying, David hath sent us unto thee, to take thee to him to wife. ⁴¹ And she arose, and bowed herself with her face to the earth, and said, Behold, thy handmaid is a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord. ⁴² And Abigail hasted, and arose, and rode upon an ass, with five damsels of hers that followed her; and she went after the messengers of David, and became his wife.
⁴³ David also took Ahinoam of Jezreel; and they became both of them his wives. ⁴⁴ Now Saul had given Michal his daughter, David's wife, to Palti the son of Laish, who was of Gallim.

¹ A soft answer turneth away wrath;
But a grievous word stirreth up anger.

¹⁴ The wrath of a king is [as] messengers of death;
But a wise man will pacify it.

⁴ If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for gentleness allayeth great offences.

⁸ And after a while he returned to take her; and he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion: and, behold, there was a swarm of bees in the body of the lion, and honey. ⁹ And he took it into his hands, and went on, eating as he went; and he came to his father and mother, and gave unto them, and they did eat: but he told them not that he had taken the honey out of the body of the lion.

²⁵ And all the people came into the forest; and there was honey upon the ground. ²⁶ And when the people were come unto the forest, behold, the honey dropped: but no man put his hand to his mouth; for the people feared the oath. ²⁷ But Jonathan heard not when his father charged the people with the oath: wherefore he put forth the end of the rod that was in his hand, and dipped it in the honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his eyes were enlightened.

⁸ The morsel which thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up,
And lose thy sweet words.

¹³ My son, eat thou honey, for it is good;
And the droppings of the honeycomb, which are sweet to thy taste: ¹⁴ So shalt thou know wisdom to be unto thy soul;
If thou hast found it, then shall there be a reward,
And thy hope shall not be cut off.

¹⁵ Butter and honey shall he eat, when he knoweth to refuse the evil, and choose the good.

²² and it shall come to pass, that because of the abundance of milk which they shall give he shall eat butter: for butter and honey shall every one eat that is left in the midst of the land.

³⁴ But take heed to yourselves, lest haply your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that day come on you suddenly as a snare:

¹⁸ And be not drunken with wine, wherein is riot, but be filled with the Spirit;

² and he said, Behold now, my lords, turn aside, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your way. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night. ³ And he urged them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.

¹⁸ And he said unto him, We are passing from Beth-lehem-judah unto the farther side of the hill-country of Ephraim; from thence am I, and I went to Beth-lehem-judah: and I am [now] going to the house of Jehovah; and there is no man that taketh me into his house. ¹⁹ Yet there is both straw and provender for our asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man that is with thy servants: there is no want of anything. ²⁰ And the old man said, Peace be unto thee; howsoever let all thy wants lie upon me; only lodge not in the street. ²¹ So he brought him into his house, and gave the asses fodder; and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink.

²⁴ whensoever I go unto Spain (for I hope to see you in my journey, and to be brought on my way thitherward by you, if first in some measure I shall have been satisfied with your company)—

² Thy tongue deviseth very wickedness,
Like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.

²¹ His mouth was smooth as butter,
But his heart was war:
His words were softer than oil,
Yet were they drawn swords.

⁴ My soul is among lions;
I lie among them that are set on fire,
Even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows,
And their tongue a sharp sword.

³ What shall be given unto thee, and what shall be done more unto thee,
Thou deceitful tongue? ⁴ Sharp arrows of the mighty,
With coals of juniper.

³ They have sharpened their tongue like a serpent;
Adders' poison is under their lips. [Selah

¹⁸ There is that speaketh rashly like the piercings of a sword;
But the tongue of the wise is health.

²⁸ Be not a witness against thy neighbor without cause;
And deceive not with thy lips.

³ And they bend their tongue, [as it were] their bow, for falsehood; and they are grown strong in the land, but not for truth: for they proceed from evil to evil, and they know not me, saith Jehovah.

⁸ Their tongue is a deadly arrow; it speaketh deceit: one speaketh peaceably to his neighbor with his mouth, but in his heart he layeth wait for him.

⁶ And the tongue is a fire: the world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the wheel of nature, and is set on fire by hell.

²⁰ And Tilgath-pilneser king of Assyria came unto him, and distressed him, but strengthened him not. ²¹ For Ahaz took away a portion out of the house of Jehovah, and out of the house of the king and of the princes, and gave it unto the king of Assyria: but it helped him not.

¹⁴ To him that is ready to faint kindness [should be showed] from his friend;
Even to him that forsaketh the fear of the Almighty. ¹⁵ My brethren have dealt deceitfully as a brook,
As the channel of brooks that pass away; ¹⁶ Which are black by reason of the ice,
[And] wherein the snow hideth itself: ¹⁷ What time they wax warm, they vanish;
When it is hot, they are consumed out of their place. ¹⁸ The caravans [that travel] by the way of them turn aside;
They go up into the waste, and perish. ¹⁹ The caravans of Tema looked,
The companies of Sheba waited for them. ²⁰ They were put to shame because they had hoped;
They came thither, and were confounded.

¹ Woe to the rebellious children, saith Jehovah, that take counsel, but not of me; and that make a league, but not of my Spirit, that they may add sin to sin, ² that set out to go down into Egypt, and have not asked at my mouth; to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to take refuge in the shadow of Egypt! ³ Therefore shall the strength of Pharaoh be your shame, and the refuge in the shadow of Egypt your confusion.

⁶ Behold, thou trustest upon the staff of this bruised reed, even upon Egypt, whereon if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust on him.

⁶ And all the inhabitants of Egypt shall know that I am Jehovah, because they have been a staff of reed to the house of Israel. ⁷ When they took hold of thee by thy hand, thou didst break, and didst rend all their shoulders; and when they leaned upon thee, thou brakest, and madest all their loins to be at a stand.

¹⁶ At my first defence no one took my part, but all forsook me: may it not be laid to their account.

¹² And if he be a poor man, thou shalt not sleep with his pledge; ¹³ thou shalt surely restore to him the pledge when the sun goeth down, that he may sleep in his garment, and bless thee: and it shall be righteousness unto thee before Jehovah thy God.
¹⁴ Thou shalt not oppress a hired servant that is poor and needy, whether he be of thy brethren, or of thy sojourners that are in thy land within thy gates: ¹⁵ in his day thou shalt give him his hire, neither shall the sun go down upon it (for he is poor, and setteth his heart upon it); lest he cry against thee unto Jehovah, and it be sin unto thee.
¹⁶ The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be put to death for his own sin.
¹⁷ Thou shalt not wrest the justice [due] to the sojourner, [or] to the fatherless, nor take the widow's raiment to pledge;

⁷ They lie all night naked without clothing,
And have no covering in the cold. ⁸ They are wet with the showers of the mountains,
And embrace the rock for want of a shelter. ⁹ There are that pluck the fatherless from the breast,
And take a pledge of the poor; ¹⁰ [So that] they go about naked without clothing,
And being hungry they carry the sheaves.

³ For there they that led us captive required of us songs,
And they that wasted us [required of us] mirth, [saying],
Sing us one of the songs of Zion. ⁴ How shall we sing Jehovah's song
In a foreign land?

²⁶ As vinegar to the teeth, and as smoke to the eyes,
So is the sluggard to them that send him.

⁴ a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

⁷ Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?

¹⁸ Then the king went to his palace, and passed the night fasting; neither were instruments of music brought before him: and his sleep fled from him.

¹⁵ Rejoice with them that rejoice; weep with them that weep.

¹⁵ If a brother or sister be naked and in lack of daily food, ¹⁶ and one of you say unto them, Go in peace, be ye warmed and filled; and yet ye give them not the things needful to the body; what doth it profit?

¹⁵ and the prayer of faith shall save him that is sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, it shall be forgiven him.

⁴ If thou meet thine enemy's ox or his ass going astray, thou shalt surely bring it back to him again. ⁵ If thou see the ass of him that hateth thee lying under his burden, thou shalt forbear to leave him, thou shalt surely release [it] with him.

²² And he answered, Thou shalt not smite them: wouldest thou smite those whom thou hast taken captive with thy sword and with thy bow? set bread and water before them, that they may eat and drink, and go to their master.

¹⁵ And the men that have been mentioned by name rose up, and took the captives, and with the spoil clothed all that were naked among them, and arrayed them, and shod them, and gave them to eat and to drink, and anointed them, and carried all the feeble of them upon asses, and brought them to Jericho, the city of palm-trees, unto their brethren: then they returned to Samaria.

¹⁷ Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth,
And let not thy heart be glad when he is overthrown;

⁴⁴ but I say unto you, Love your enemies, and pray for them that persecute you;

³³ But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he was moved with compassion, ³⁴ and came to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring on [them] oil and wine; and he set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. ³⁵ And on the morrow he took out two shillings, and gave them to the host, and said, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, I, when I come back again, will repay thee. ³⁶ Which of these three, thinkest thou, proved neighbor unto him that fell among the robbers?}

²⁰ But if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him to drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head. ²¹ Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

¹² It may be that Jehovah will look on the wrong done unto me, and that Jehovah will requite me good for [his] cursing of me this day.

¹³ And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you.

¹⁸ Then they also that are fallen asleep in Christ have perished.

²² Out of the north cometh golden splendor:
God hath upon him terrible majesty.

³ He that slandereth not with his tongue,
Nor doeth evil to his friend,
Nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbor;

⁵ Whoso privily slandereth his neighbor, him will I destroy:
Him that hath a high look and a proud heart will I not suffer.

²⁰ For lack of wood the fire goeth out;
And where there is no whisperer, contention ceaseth.

³⁰ backbiters, hateful to God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

²⁰ For I fear, lest by any means, when I come, I should find you not such as I would, and should myself be found of you such as ye would not; lest by any means [there should be] strife, jealousy, wraths, factions, backbitings, whisperings, swellings, tumults;

¹³ A foolish son is the calamity of his father;
And the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping.

⁹ It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop,
Than with a contentious woman in a wide house.

¹⁹ It is better to dwell in a desert land,
Than with a contentious and fretful woman.

¹⁵ A continual dropping in a very rainy day
And a contentious woman are alike: ¹⁶ He that would restrain her restraineth the wind;
And his right hand encountereth oil.

¹⁶ And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a bowshot: for she said, Let me not look upon the death of the child. And she sat over against him, and lifted up her voice, and wept. ¹⁷ And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, What aileth thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is. ¹⁸ Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him in thy hand; for I will make him a great nation. ¹⁹ And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink.

² Wherefore the people strove with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why strive ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt Jehovah? ³ And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore hast thou brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?

⁶ Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

¹⁸ And he was sore athirst, and called on Jehovah, and said, Thou hast given this great deliverance by the hand of thy servant; and now shall I die for thirst, and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised. ¹⁹ But God clave the hollow place that is in Lehi, and there came water thereout; and when he had drunk, his spirit came again, and he revived: wherefore the name thereof was called En-hakkore, which is in Lehi, unto this day.

¹⁵ And David longed, and said, Oh that one would give me water to drink of the well of Beth-lehem, which is by the gate!

As the hart panteth after the water brooks,
So panteth my soul after thee, O God. ² My soul thirsteth for God, for the living God:
When shall I come and appear before God?

In a dry and weary land, where no water is.

³⁰ The light of the eyes rejoiceth the heart;
[And] good tidings make the bones fat.

⁷ How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace, that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation, that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!

¹ Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price.

¹⁴ Shall the snow of Lebanon fail from the rock of the field? [or] shall the cold waters that flow down from afar be dried up?

¹⁵ Behold, upon the mountains the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace! Keep thy feasts, O Judah, perform thy vows; for the wicked one shall no more pass through thee; he is utterly cut off.

¹⁰ And the angel said unto them, Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all the people: ¹¹ for there is born to you this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord.

³⁷ Now on the last day, the great [day] of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, { If any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink.

¹⁵ and how shall they preach, except they be sent? even as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that bring glad tidings of good things!

¹⁵ Faithful is the saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief:

⁶ And he said unto me, They are come to pass. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.

¹⁷ And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And he that heareth, let him say, Come. And he that is athirst, let him come: he that will, let him take the water of life freely.

⁸ And Cain told Abel his brother. And it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

¹⁴ Then Ahimelech answered the king, and said, And who among all thy servants is so faithful as David, who is the king's son-in-law, and is taken into thy council, and is honorable in thy house? ¹⁵ Have I to-day begun to inquire of God for him? be it far from me: let not the king impute anything unto his servant, nor to all the house of my father; for thy servant knoweth nothing of all this, less or more. ¹⁶ And the king said, Thou shalt surely die, Ahimelech, thou, and all thy father's house. ¹⁷ And the king said unto the guard that stood about him, Turn, and slay the priests of Jehovah; because their hand also is with David, and because they knew that he fled, and did not disclose it to me. But the servants of the king would not put forth their hand to fall upon the priests of Jehovah. ¹⁸ And the king said to Doeg, Turn thou, and fall upon the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, and he fell upon the priests, and he slew on that day fourscore and five persons that did wear a linen ephod.

²¹ And they conspired against him, and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of Jehovah. ²² Thus Joash the king remembered not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him, but slew his son. And when he died, he said, Jehovah look upon it, and require it.

² Son of man, take up a lamentation over Pharaoh king of Egypt, and say unto him, Thou wast likened unto a young lion of the nations: yet art thou as a monster in the seas; and thou didst break forth with thy rivers, and troubledst the waters with thy feet, and fouledst their rivers.

¹⁸ Seemeth it a small thing unto you to have fed upon the good pasture, but ye must tread down with your feet the residue of your pasture? and to have drunk of the clear waters, but ye must foul the residue with your feet? ¹⁹ And as for my sheep, they eat that which ye have trodden with your feet, and they drink that which ye have fouled with your feet.

³⁴ Therefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: some of them shall ye kill and crucify; and some of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city: ³⁵ that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed on the earth, from the blood of Abel the righteous unto the blood of Zachariah son of Barachiah, whom ye slew between the sanctuary and the altar. ³⁶ Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.
³⁷ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that killeth the prophets, and stoneth them that are sent unto her! how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

⁶⁹ Now Peter was sitting without in the court: and a maid came unto him, saying, Thou also wast with Jesus the Galilζan. ⁷⁰ But he denied before them all, saying, I know not what thou sayest. ⁷¹ And when he was gone out into the porch, another [maid] saw him, and saith unto them that were there, This man also was with Jesus of Nazareth. ⁷² And again he denied with an oath, I know not the man. ⁷³ And after a little while they that stood by came and said to Peter, Of a truth thou also art [one] of them; for thy speech maketh thee known. ⁷⁴ Then began he to curse and to swear, I know not the man. And straightway the cock crew.

⁵² Which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? and they killed them that showed before of the coming of the Righteous One; of whom ye have now become betrayers and murderers;

¹⁵ who both killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and drove out us, and please not God, and are contrary to all men;

⁶ And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus. And when I saw her, I wondered with a great wonder.

¹⁶ Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee,
Lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.

⁴⁴ How can ye believe, who receive glory one of another, and the glory that [cometh] from the only God ye seek not?

¹ I must needs glory, though it is not expedient; but I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord.

¹¹ I am become foolish: ye compelled me; for I ought to have been commended of you: for in nothing was I behind the very chiefest apostles, though I am nothing.

³ [doing] nothing through faction or through vainglory, but in lowliness of mind each counting other better than himself;

³⁰ Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said unto him, Thou son of a perverse rebellious woman, do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thine own shame, and unto the shame of thy mother's nakedness?

¹⁷ Now therefore know and consider what thou wilt do; for evil is determined against our master, and against all his house: for he is such a worthless fellow, that one cannot speak to him.

⁵ And he took courage, and built up all the wall that was broken down, and raised [it] up to the towers, and the other wall without, and strengthened Millo [in] the city of David, and made weapons and shields in abundance.

³ And they said unto me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire.

³² He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty;
And he that ruleth his spirit, than he that taketh a city.

²⁴ Make no friendship with a man that is given to anger;
And with a wrathful man thou shalt not go:
