¹ Be not thou envious against evil men;
Neither desire to be with them: ² For their heart studieth oppression,
And their lips talk of mischief. ³ Through wisdom is a house builded;
And by understanding it is established; ⁴ And by knowledge are the chambers filled
With all precious and pleasant riches. ⁵ A wise man is strong;
Yea, a man of knowledge increaseth might. ⁶ For by wise guidance thou shalt make thy war;
And in the multitude of counsellors there is safety. ⁷ Wisdom is too high for a fool:
He openeth not his mouth in the gate. ⁸ He that deviseth to do evil,
Men shall call him a mischief-maker. ⁹ The thought of foolishness is sin;
And the scoffer is an abomination to men. ¹⁰ If thou faint in the day of adversity,
Thy strength is small. ¹¹ Deliver them that are carried away unto death,
And those that are ready to be slain see that thou hold back. ¹² If thou sayest, Behold, we knew not this;
Doth not he that weigheth the hearts consider it?
And he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it?
And shall not he render to every man according to his work? ¹³ My son, eat thou honey, for it is good;
And the droppings of the honeycomb, which are sweet to thy taste: ¹⁴ So shalt thou know wisdom to be unto thy soul;
If thou hast found it, then shall there be a reward,
And thy hope shall not be cut off. ¹⁵ Lay not wait, O wicked man, against the habitation of the righteous;
Destroy not his resting-place: ¹⁶ For a righteous man falleth seven times, and riseth up again;
But the wicked are overthrown by calamity. ¹⁷ Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth,
And let not thy heart be glad when he is overthrown; ¹⁸ Lest Jehovah see it, and it displease him,
And he turn away his wrath from him. ¹⁹ Fret not thyself because of evil-doers;
Neither be thou envious at the wicked: ²⁰ For there shall be no reward to the evil man;
The lamp of the wicked shall be put out. ²¹ My son, fear thou Jehovah and the king;
[And] company not with them that are given to change: ²² For their calamity shall rise suddenly;
And the destruction from them both, who knoweth it?
²³ These also are [sayings] of the wise.

To have respect of persons in judgment is not good. ²⁴ He that saith unto the wicked, Thou art righteous,
Peoples shall curse him, nations shall abhor him; ²⁵ But to them that rebuke [him] shall be delight,
And a good blessing shall come upon them. ²⁶ He kisseth the lips
Who giveth a right answer. ²⁷ Prepare thy work without,
And make it ready for thee in the field;
And afterwards build thy house. ²⁸ Be not a witness against thy neighbor without cause;
And deceive not with thy lips. ²⁹ Say not, I will do so to him as he hath done to me;
I will render to the man according to his work. ³⁰ I went by the field of the sluggard,
And by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; ³¹ And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns,
The face thereof was covered with nettles,
And the stone wall thereof was broken down. ³² Then I beheld, and considered well;
I saw, and received instruction: ³³ [Yet] a little sleep, a little slumber,
A little folding of the hands to sleep; ³⁴ So shall thy poverty come as a robber,
And thy want as an armed man.

¹⁰ And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the Plain of the Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before Jehovah destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, like the garden of Jehovah, like the land of Egypt, as thou goest unto Zoar. ¹¹ So Lot chose him all the Plain of the Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other. ¹² Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelt in the cities of the Plain, and moved his tent as far as Sodom. ¹³ Now the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners against Jehovah exceedingly.

¹ And the two angels came to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot saw them, and rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face to the earth; ² and he said, Behold now, my lords, turn aside, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your way. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night. ³ And he urged them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat. ⁴ But before they lay down, the men of the city, [even] the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both young and old, all the people from every quarter; ⁵ and they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men that came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them. ⁶ And Lot went out unto them to the door, and shut the door after him. ⁷ And he said, I pray you, my brethren, do not so wickedly. ⁸ Behold now, I have two daughters that have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing, forasmuch as they are come under the shadow of my roof. ⁹ And they said, Stand back. And they said, This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worse with thee, than with them. And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and drew near to break the door. ¹⁰ But the men put forth their hand, and brought Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door. ¹¹ And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great, so that they wearied themselves to find the door.

⁹ Gather not my soul with sinners,
Nor my life with men of blood;

¹ [A Psalm] of David.

Fret not thyself because of evil-doers,
Neither be thou envious against them that work unrighteousness.

⁷ Rest in Jehovah, and wait patiently for him:
Fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way,
Because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.

³ For I was envious at the arrogant,
When I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

¹¹ If they say, Come with us,
Let us lay wait for blood;
Let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause; ¹² Let us swallow them up alive as Sheol,
And whole, as those that go down into the pit; ¹³ We shall find all precious substance;
We shall fill our houses with spoil; ¹⁴ Thou shalt cast thy lot among us;
We will all have one purse: ¹⁵ My son, walk not thou in the way with them;
Refrain thy foot from their path:

³¹ Envy thou not the man of violence,
And choose none of his ways.

²⁰ Walk with wise men, and thou shalt be wise;
But the companion of fools shall smart for it.

¹⁷ Let not thy heart envy sinners;
But [be thou] in the fear of Jehovah all the day long:

¹⁹ Fret not thyself because of evil-doers;
Neither be thou envious at the wicked:

¹⁹ Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are [these]: fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, ²⁰ idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousies, wraths, factions, divisions, parties, ²¹ envyings, drunkenness, revellings, and such like; of which I forewarn you, even as I did forewarn you, that they who practise such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

⁵ Or think ye that the scripture speaketh in vain? Doth the spirit which he made to dwell in us long unto envying? ⁶ But he giveth more grace. Wherefore [the scripture] saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble.

⁹ And David knew that Saul was devising mischief against him; and he said to Abiathar the priest, Bring hither the ephod.

⁶ But he thought scorn to lay hands on Mordecai alone; for they had made known to him the people of Mordecai: wherefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus, even the people of Mordecai.
⁷ In the first month, which is the month Nisan, in the twelfth year of king Ahasuerus, they cast Pur, that is, the lot, before Haman from day to day, and from month to month, [to] the twelfth [month], which is the month Adar.

³⁵ They conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity,
And their heart prepareth deceit.

¹⁴ Behold, he travaileth with iniquity;
Yea, he hath conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood.

⁷ His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and oppression:
Under his tongue is mischief and iniquity.

³ Draw me not away with the wicked,
And with the workers of iniquity;
That speak peace with their neighbors,
But mischief is in their hearts.

⁴ He deviseth iniquity upon his bed;
He setteth himself in a way that is not good;
He abhorreth not evil.

⁴ That they may shoot in secret places at the perfect:
Suddenly do they shoot at him, and fear not. ⁵ They encourage themselves in an evil purpose;
They commune of laying snares privily;
They say, Who will see them? ⁶ They search out iniquities;
We have accomplished, [say they], a diligent search:
And the inward thought and the heart of every one is deep.

² Who devise mischiefs in their heart;
Continually do they gather themselves together for war.

¹⁴ In whose heart is perverseness,
Who deviseth evil continually,
Who soweth discord.

⁸ He that deviseth to do evil,
Men shall call him a mischief-maker.

⁴ None sueth in righteousness, and none pleadeth in truth: they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity.

³ Their hands are upon that which is evil to do it diligently; the prince asketh, and the judge [is ready] for a reward; and the great man, he uttereth the evil desire of his soul: thus they weave it together.

³ Then were gathered together the chief priests, and the elders of the people, unto the court of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas; ⁴ and they took counsel together that they might take Jesus by subtlety, and kill him.

²⁰ And Pilate spake unto them again, desiring to release Jesus; ²¹ but they shouted, saying, Crucify, crucify him.

¹⁰ and said, O full of all guile and all villany, thou son of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?

²⁶ And let thy name be magnified for ever, saying, Jehovah of hosts is God over Israel; and the house of thy servant David shall be established before thee.

¹ Wisdom hath builded her house;
She hath hewn out her seven pillars:

¹ Every wise woman buildeth her house;
But the foolish plucketh it down with her own hands.

¹² He hath made the earth by his power, he hath established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding hath he stretched out the heavens.

⁹ For we are God's fellow-workers: ye are God's husbandry, God's building.

⁷ rooted and builded up in him, and established in your faith, even as ye were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

²² And Solomon's provision for one day was thirty measures of fine flour, and threescore measures of meal, ²³ ten fat oxen, and twenty oxen out of the pastures, and a hundred sheep, besides harts, and gazelles, and roebucks, and fatted fowl. ²⁴ For he had dominion over all [the region] on this side the River, from Tiphsah even to Gaza, over all the kings on this side the River: and he had peace on all sides round about him. ²⁵ And Judah and Israel dwelt safely, every man under his vine and under his fig-tree, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, all the days of Solomon. ²⁶ And Solomon had forty thousand stalls of horses for his chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen. ²⁷ And those officers provided victuals for king Solomon, and for all that came unto king Solomon's table, every man in his month; they let nothing be lacking. ²⁸ Barley also and straw for the horses and swift steeds brought they unto the place where [the officers] were, every man according to his charge.

²⁵ And over the king's treasures was Azmaveth the son of Adiel: and over the treasures in the fields, in the cities, and in the villages, and in the castles, was Jonathan the son of Uzziah: ²⁶ and over them that did the work of the field for tillage of the ground was Ezri the son of Chelub: ²⁷ and over the vineyards was Shimei the Ramathite: and over the increase of the vineyards for the wine-cellars was Zabdi the Shiphmite: ²⁸ and over the olive-trees and the sycomore-trees that were in the lowland was Baal-hanan the Gederite: and over the cellars of oil was Joash: ²⁹ and over the herds that fed in Sharon was Shitrai the Sharonite: and over the herds that were in the valleys was Shaphat the son of Adlai: ³⁰ and over the camels was Obil the Ishmaelite: and over the asses was Jehdeiah the Meronothite: and over the flocks was Jaziz the Hagrite. ³¹ All these were the rulers of the substance which was king David's.

² Now I have prepared with all my might for the house of my God the gold for the [things of] gold, and the silver for the [things of] silver, and the brass for the [things of] brass, the iron for the [things of] iron, and wood for the [things of] wood; onyx stones, and [stones] to be set, stones for inlaid work, and of divers colors, and all manner of precious stones, and marble stones in abundance. ³ Moreover also, because I have set my affection on the house of my God, seeing that I have a treasure of mine own of gold and silver, I give it unto the house of my God, over and above all that I have prepared for the holy house, ⁴ even three thousand talents of gold, of the gold of Ophir, and seven thousand talents of refined silver, wherewith to overlay the walls of the houses; ⁵ of gold for the [things of] gold, and of silver for the [things of] silver, and for all manner of work [to be made] by the hands of artificers. Who then offereth willingly to consecrate himself this day unto Jehovah?
⁶ Then the princes of the fathers' [houses], and the princes of the tribes of Israel, and the captains of thousands and of hundreds, with the rulers over the king's work, offered willingly; ⁷ and they gave for the service of the house of God of gold five thousand talents and ten thousand darics, and of silver ten thousand talents, and of brass eighteen thousand talents, and of iron a hundred thousand talents. ⁸ And they with whom [precious] stones were found gave them to the treasure of the house of Jehovah, under the hand of Jehiel the Gershonite. ⁹ Then the people rejoiced, for that they offered willingly, because with a perfect heart they offered willingly to Jehovah: and David the king also rejoiced with great joy.

¹⁸ Thus Solomon made all these vessels in great abundance: for the weight of the brass could not be found out.
¹⁹ And Solomon made all the vessels that were in the house of God, the golden altar also, and the tables whereon was the showbread; ²⁰ and the candlesticks with their lamps, to burn according to the ordinance before the oracle, of pure gold; ²¹ and the flowers, and the lamps, and the tongs, of gold, and that perfect gold; ²² and the snuffers, and the basins, and the spoons, and the firepans, of pure gold. And as for the entry of the house, the inner doors thereof for the most holy place, and the doors of the house, [to wit], of the temple, were of gold.

⁴ And he did that which was right in the eyes of Jehovah, according to all that his father Amaziah had done. ⁵ And he set himself to seek God in the days of Zechariah, who had understanding in the vision of God: and as long as he sought Jehovah, God made him to prosper.
⁶ And he went forth and warred against the Philistines, and brake down the wall of Gath, and the wall of Jabneh, and the wall of Ashdod; and he built cities in [the country of] Ashdod, and among the Philistines. ⁷ And God helped him against the Philistines, and against the Arabians that dwelt in Gur-baal, and the Meunim. ⁸ And the Ammonites gave tribute to Uzziah: and his name spread abroad even to the entrance of Egypt; for he waxed exceeding strong. ⁹ Moreover Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the corner gate, and at the valley gate, and at the turning [of the wall], and fortified them. ¹⁰ And he built towers in the wilderness, and hewed out many cisterns, for he had much cattle; in the lowland also, and in the plain: [and he had] husbandmen and vinedressers in the mountains and in the fruitful fields; for he loved husbandry. ¹¹ Moreover Uzziah had an army of fighting men, that went out to war by bands, according to the number of their reckoning made by Jeiel the scribe and Maaseiah the officer, under the hand of Hananiah, one of the king's captains.

³⁹ For the children of Israel and the children of Levi shall bring the heave-offering of the grain, of the new wine, and of the oil, unto the chambers, where are the vessels of the sanctuary, and the priests that minister, and the porters, and the singers: and we will not forsake the house of our God.

⁵ had prepared for him a great chamber, where aforetime they laid the meal-offerings, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithes of the grain, the new wine, and the oil, which were given by commandment to the Levites, and the singers, and the porters; and the heave-offerings for the priests. ⁶ But in all this [time] I was not at Jerusalem; for in the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I went unto the king: and after certain days asked I leave of the king, ⁷ and I came to Jerusalem, and understood the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, in preparing him a chamber in the courts of the house of God. ⁸ And it grieved me sore: therefore I cast forth all the household stuff of Tobiah out of the chamber. ⁹ Then I commanded, and they cleansed the chambers: and thither brought I again the vessels of the house of God, with the meal-offerings and the frankincense.
¹⁰ And I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them; so that the Levites and the singers, that did the work, were fled every one to his field. ¹¹ Then contended I with the rulers, and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place. ¹² Then brought all Judah the tithe of the grain and the new wine and the oil unto the treasuries. ¹³ And I made treasurers over the treasuries, Shelemiah the priest, and Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah: and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah; for they were counted faithful, and their business was to distribute unto their brethren.

²¹ That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance,
And that I may fill their treasuries.

⁶ In the house of the righteous is much treasure;
But in the revenues of the wicked is trouble.

¹⁵ There is gold, and abundance of rubies;
But the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel.

²⁰ There is precious treasure and oil in the dwelling of the wise;
But a foolish man swalloweth it up.

²³ Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks,
[And] look well to thy herds: ²⁴ For riches are not for ever:
And doth the crown endure unto all generations? ²⁵ The hay is carried, and the tender grass showeth itself,
And the herbs of the mountains are gathered in. ²⁶ The lambs are for thy clothing,
And the goats are the price of the field; ²⁷ And [there will be] goats' milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household,
And maintenance for thy maidens.

⁵² And he said unto them, Therefore every scribe who hath been made a disciple to the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is a householder, who bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.

⁷ They go from strength to strength;
Every one of them appeareth before God in Zion.

¹⁴ Counsel is mine, and sound knowledge:
I am understanding; I have might.

²⁹ The way of Jehovah is a stronghold to the upright;
But it is a destruction to the workers of iniquity.

²² A wise man scaleth the city of the mighty,
And bringeth down the strength of the confidence thereof.

¹⁹ Wisdom is a strength to the wise man more than ten rulers that are in a city.

¹⁴ There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it. ¹⁵ Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man. ¹⁶ Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard. ¹⁷ The words of the wise heard in quiet are better than the cry of him that ruleth among fools. ¹⁸ Wisdom is better than weapons of war; but one sinner destroyeth much good.

³¹ but they that wait for Jehovah shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; they shall walk, and not faint.

¹¹ strengthened with all power, according to the might of his glory, unto all patience and longsuffering with joy;

¹⁴ Where no wise guidance is, the people falleth;
But in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.

²² Where there is no counsel, purposes are disappointed;
But in the multitude of counsellors they are established.

¹⁸ Every purpose is established by counsel;
And by wise guidance make thou war.

³¹ Or what king, as he goeth to encounter another king in war, will not sit down first and take counsel whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?

²⁵ And every man that striveth in the games exerciseth self-control in all things. Now they [do it] to receive a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible. ²⁶ I therefore so run, as not uncertainly; so fight I, as not beating the air: ²⁷ but I buffet my body, and bring it into bondage: lest by any means, after that I have preached to others, I myself should be rejected.

¹⁰ Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of his might. ¹¹ Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. ¹² For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world-rulers of this darkness, against the spiritual [hosts] of wickedness in the heavenly [places]. ¹³ Wherefore take up the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and, having done all, to stand. ¹⁴ Stand therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, ¹⁵ and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; ¹⁶ withal taking up the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the evil [one]. ¹⁷ And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: ¹⁸ with all prayer and supplication praying at all seasons in the Spirit, and watching thereunto in all perseverance and supplication for all the saints, ¹⁹ and on my behalf, that utterance may be given unto me in opening my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, ²⁰ for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

¹¹ But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. ¹² Fight the good fight of the faith, lay hold on the life eternal, whereunto thou wast called, and didst confess the good confession in the sight of many witnesses.

⁷ I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith:

⁴ His children are far from safety,
And they are crushed in the gate,
Neither is there any to deliver them:

⁷ When I went forth to the gate unto the city,
When I prepared my seat in the street, ⁸ The young men saw me and hid themselves,
And the aged rose up and stood; ⁹ The princes refrained from talking,
And laid their hand on their mouth; ¹⁰ The voice of the nobels was hushed,
And their tongue cleaved to the roof of their mouth. ¹¹ For when the ear heard [me], then it blessed me;
And when the eye saw [me], it gave witness unto me: ¹² Because I delivered the poor that cried,
The fatherless also, that had none to help him. ¹³ The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me;
And I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy. ¹⁴ I put on righteousness, and it clothed me:
My justice was as a robe and a diadem. ¹⁵ I was eyes to the blind,
And feet was I to the lame. ¹⁶ I was a father to the needy:
And the cause of him that I knew not I searched out. ¹⁷ And I brake the jaws of the unrighteous,
And plucked the prey out of his teeth. ¹⁸ Then I said, I shall die in my nest,
And I shall multiply my days as the sand: ¹⁹ My root is spread out to the waters,
And the dew lieth all night upon my branch; ²⁰ My glory is fresh in me,
And my bow is renewed in my hand. ²¹ Unto me men gave ear, and waited,
And kept silence for my counsel. ²² After my words they spake not again;
And my speech distilled upon them. ²³ And they waited for me as for the rain;
And they opened their mouth wide [as] for the latter rain. ²⁴ I smiled on them, when they had no confidence;
And the light of my countenance they cast not down. ²⁵ I chose out their way, and sat [as] chief,
And dwelt as a king in the army,
As one that comforteth the mourners.

²¹ If I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless,
Because I saw my help in the gate:

⁵ His ways are firm at all times;
Thy judgments are far above out of his sight:
As for all his adversaries, he puffeth at them.

⁵ How great are thy works, O Jehovah!
Thy thoughts are very deep. ⁶ A brutish man knoweth not;
Neither doth a fool understand this:

⁶ A scoffer seeketh wisdom, and [findeth it] not;
But knowledge is easy unto him that hath understanding.

²⁴ To the wise the way of life [goeth] upward,
That he may depart from Sheol beneath.

²⁴ Wisdom is before the face of him that hath understanding;
But the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.

²² Rob not the poor, because he is poor;
Neither oppress the afflicted in the gate:

⁸ Open thy mouth for the dumb,
In the cause of all such as are left desolate. ⁹ Open thy mouth, judge righteously,
And minister justice to the poor and needy.

²¹ that make a man an offender in [his] cause, and lay a snare for him that reproveth in the gate, and turn aside the just with a thing of nought.

¹⁰ They hate him that reproveth in the gate, and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly.

¹² For I know how manifold are your transgressions, and how mighty are your sins—ye that afflict the just, that take a bribe, and that turn aside the needy in the gate [from their right].

¹⁵ Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish justice in the gate: it may be that Jehovah, the God of hosts, will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.

¹⁴ Now the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him; and he cannot know them, because they are spiritually judged.

⁴⁴ The king said moreover to Shimei, Thou knowest all the wickedness which thy heart is privy to, that thou didst to David my father: therefore Jehovah shall return thy wickedness upon thine own head.

¹¹ For they intended evil against thee;
They conceived a device which they are not able to perform.

¹⁸ A heart that deviseth wicked purposes,
Feet that are swift in running to mischief,

²² Do they not err that devise evil?
But mercy and truth [shall be to] them that devise good.

² For their heart studieth oppression,

⁷ Howbeit he meaneth not so, neither doth his heart think so; but it is in his heart to destroy, and to cut off nations not a few. ⁸ For he saith, Are not my princes all of them kings? ⁹ Is not Calno as Carchemish? is not Hamath as Arpad? is not Samaria as Damascus? ¹⁰ As my hand hath found the kingdoms of the idols, whose graven images did excel them of Jerusalem and of Samaria; ¹¹ shall I not, as I have done unto Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols?
¹² Wherefore it shall come to pass, that, when the Lord hath performed his whole work upon mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the stout heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks. ¹³ For he hath said, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I have understanding: and I have removed the bounds of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures, and like a valiant man I have brought down them that sit [on thrones]:

⁷ And the instruments of the churl are evil: he deviseth wicked devices to destroy the meek with lying words, even when the needy speaketh right.

¹⁰ Thus saith the Lord Jehovah: It shall come to pass in that day, that things shall come into thy mind, and thou shalt devise an evil device: ¹¹ and thou shalt say, I will go up to the land of unwalled villages; I will go to them that are at rest, that dwell securely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having neither bars nor gates;

¹¹ There is one gone forth out of thee, that deviseth evil against Jehovah, that counselleth wickedness.

³⁰ backbiters, hateful to God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

⁵ And Jehovah saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

²¹ And Jehovah smelled the sweet savor; and Jehovah said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake, for that the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more everything living, as I have done.

¹¹³ SAMEKH.

I hate them that are of a double mind;
But thy law do I love.

¹⁰ Cast out the scoffer, and contention will go out;
Yea, strife and ignominy will cease.

⁷ For as he thinketh within himself, so is he:
Eat and drink, saith he to thee;
But his heart is not with thee.

⁸ Scoffers set a city in a flame;
But wise men turn away wrath.

⁷ let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return unto Jehovah, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

¹⁴ O Jerusalem, wash thy heart from wickedness, that thou mayest be saved. How long shall thine evil thoughts lodge within thee?

²⁸ but I say unto you, that every one that looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

⁴ And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, { Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts?

¹⁹ For out of the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, railings:

²² Repent therefore of this thy wickedness, and pray the Lord, if perhaps the thought of thy heart shall be forgiven thee.

⁵ casting down imaginations, and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God, and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ;

¹ And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul: there is nothing better for me than that I should escape into the land of the Philistines; and Saul will despair of me, to seek me any more in all the borders of Israel: so shall I escape out of his hand.

⁵ But now it is come unto thee, and thou faintest;
It toucheth thee, and thou art troubled.

²⁸ Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard? The everlasting God, Jehovah, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary; there is no searching of his understanding. ²⁹ He giveth power to the faint; and to him that hath no might he increaseth strength. ³⁰ Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: ³¹ but they that wait for Jehovah shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; they shall walk, and not faint.

⁴⁶ And let not your heart faint, neither fear ye for the tidings that shall be heard in the land; for tidings shall come one year, and after that in another year [shall come] tidings, and violence in the land, ruler against ruler.

⁸ For his disciples were gone away into the city to buy food.

¹ Therefore seeing we have this ministry, even as we obtained mercy, we faint not:

¹³ Wherefore I ask that ye may not faint at my tribulations for you, which are your glory.

³ For consider him that hath endured such gainsaying of sinners against himself, that ye wax not weary, fainting in your souls. ⁴ Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving against sin: ⁵ and ye have forgotten the exhortation which reasoneth with you as with sons,
My son, regard not lightly the chastening of the Lord,
Nor faint when thou art reproved of him;

³ and thou hast patience and didst bear for my name's sake, and hast not grown weary.

¹³ I know where thou dwellest, [even] where Satan's throne is; and thou holdest fast my name, and didst not deny my faith, even in the days of Antipas my witness, my faithful one, who was killed among you, where Satan dwelleth.

⁸ Then said Abishai to David, God hath delivered up thine enemy into thy hand this day: now therefore let me smite him, I pray thee, with the spear to the earth at one stroke, and I will not smite him the second time. ⁹ And David said to Abishai, Destroy him not; for who can put forth his hand against Jehovah's anointed, and be guiltless?

¹⁷ And I brake the jaws of the unrighteous,
And plucked the prey out of his teeth.

⁴ Rescue the poor and needy:
Deliver them out of the hand of the wicked.

⁶ Is not this the fast that I have chosen: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the bands of the yoke, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke? ⁷ Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?

³¹ And by chance a certain priest was going down that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. ³² And in like manner a Levite also, when he came to the place, and saw him, passed by on the other side.

²³ But they were urgent with loud voices, asking that he might be crucified. And their voices prevailed. ²⁴ And Pilate gave sentence that what they asked for should be done. ²⁵ And he released him that for insurrection and murder had been cast into prison, whom they asked for; but Jesus he delivered up to their will.

¹⁷ And they all laid hold on Sosthenes, the ruler of the synagogue, and beat him before the judgment-seat. And Gallio cared for none of these things.

³¹ And as they were seeking to kill him, tidings came up to the chief captain of the band, that all Jerusalem was in confusion. ³² And forthwith he took soldiers and centurions, and ran down upon them: and they, when they saw the chief captain and the soldiers, left off beating Paul.

¹⁰ And when there arose a great dissension, the chief captain, fearing lest Paul should be torn in pieces by them, commanded the soldiers to go down and take him by force from among them, and bring him into the castle.

²³ And he called unto him two of the centurions, and said, Make ready two hundred soldiers to go as far as Cζsarea, and horsemen threescore and ten, and spearmen two hundred, at the third hour of the night: ²⁴ and [he bade them] provide beasts, that they might set Paul thereon, and bring him safe unto Felix the governor.
²⁵ And he wrote a letter after this form: ²⁶ Claudius Lysias unto the most excellent governor Felix, greeting. ²⁷ This man was seized by the Jews, and was about to be slain of them, when I came upon them with the soldiers and rescued him, having learned that he was a Roman. ²⁸ And desiring to know the cause wherefore they accused him, I brought him down unto their council: ²⁹ whom I found to be accused about questions of their law, but to have nothing laid to his charge worthy of death or of bonds. ³⁰ And when it was shown to me that there would be a plot against the man, I sent him to thee forthwith, charging his accusers also to speak against him before thee.
³¹ So the soldiers, as it was commanded them, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris. ³² But on the morrow they left the horsemen to go with him, and returned to the castle: ³³ and they, when they came to Cζsarea and delivered the letter to the governor, presented Paul also before him. ³⁴ And when he had read it, he asked of what province he was; and when he understood that he was of Cilicia, ³⁵ I will hear thee fully, said he, when thine accusers also are come: and he commanded him to be kept in Herod's palace.

¹⁶ Hereby know we love, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. ¹⁷ But whoso hath the world's goods, and beholdeth his brother in need, and shutteth up his compassion from him, how doth the love of God abide in him?

⁶ Jehovah killeth, and maketh alive:
He bringeth down to Sheol, and bringeth up.

⁷ But Jehovah said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have rejected him: for [Jehovah seeth] not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but Jehovah looketh on the heart.

²⁹ And though men be risen up to pursue thee, and to seek thy soul, yet the soul of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of life with Jehovah thy God; and the souls of thine enemies, them shall he sling out, as from the hollow of a sling.

¹¹ For the work of a man will he render unto him,
And cause every man to find according to his ways.

⁹ Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end, but establish thou the righteous:
For the righteous God trieth the minds and hearts.

³ Thou hast proved my heart; thou hast visited me in the night;
Thou hast tried me, and findest nothing;
I am purposed that my mouth shall not transgress.

²¹ Will not God search this out?
For he knoweth the secrets of the heart.

¹² Also unto thee, O Lord, belongeth lovingkindness;
For thou renderest to every man according to his work.

⁹ Who holdeth our soul in life,
And suffereth not our feet to be moved.

³ He will not suffer thy foot to be moved:
He that keepeth thee will not slumber.

⁸ Jehovah will keep thy going out and thy coming in
From this time forth and for evermore.

²¹ For the ways of man are before the eyes of Jehovah;
And he maketh level all his paths.

² Every way of a man is right in his own eyes;
But Jehovah weighteth the hearts.

⁸ If thou seest the oppression of the poor, and the violent taking away of justice and righteousness in a province, marvel not at the matter: for one higher than the high regardeth; and there are higher than they.

¹⁰ I, Jehovah, search the mind, I try the heart, even to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings.

¹⁹ great in counsel, and mighty in work; whose eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of men, to give every one according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings:

²³ but hast lifted up thyself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before thee, and thou and thy lords, thy wives and thy concubines, have drunk wine from them; and thou hast praised the gods of silver and gold, of brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know; and the God in whose hand thy breath is, and whose are all thy ways, hast thou not glorified.

²⁷ For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then shall he render unto every man according to his deeds.

²⁸ for in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain even of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring.

⁶ who will render to every man according to his works:

¹⁶ in the day when God shall judge the secrets of men, according to my gospel, by Jesus Christ.

⁵ Wherefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who will both bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and make manifest the counsels of the hearts; and then shall each man have his praise from God.

¹⁰ For we must all be made manifest before the judgment-seat of Christ; that each one may receive the things [done] in the body, according to what he hath done, whether [it be] good or bad.

¹² For the word of God is living, and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and quick to discern the thoughts and intents of the heart. ¹³ And there is no creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and laid open before the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

¹⁸ and the Living one; and I was dead, and behold, I am alive for evermore, and I have the keys of death and of Hades.

¹⁸ And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write:
These things saith the Son of God, who hath his eyes like a flame of fire, and his feet are like unto burnished brass:

²³ And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he that searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto each one of you according to your works.

¹² And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne; and books were opened: and another book was opened, which is [the book] of life: and the dead were judged out of the things which were written in the books, according to their works. ¹³ And the sea gave up the dead that were in it; and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. ¹⁴ And death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death, [even] the lake of fire. ¹⁵ And if any was not found written in the book of life, he was cast into the lake of fire.

¹² { Behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to render to each man according as his work is.

¹⁰ More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold;
Sweeter also than honey and the droppings of the honeycomb.

¹⁰³ How sweet are thy words unto my taste!
[Yea, sweeter] than honey to my mouth!

¹⁶ Hast thou found honey? eat so much as is sufficient for thee,
Lest thou be filled therewith, and vomit it.

²⁷ It is not good to eat much honey:
So [for men] to search out their own glory is grievous.

¹¹ Thy lips, O [my] bride, drop [as] the honeycomb:
Honey and milk are under thy tongue;
And the smell of thy garments is like the smell of Lebanon.

¹ I am come into my garden, my sister, [my] bride:
I have gathered my myrrh with my spice;
I have eaten my honeycomb with my honey;
I have drunk my wine with my milk.
Eat, O friends;
Drink, yea, drink abundantly, O beloved.

¹⁵ Butter and honey shall he eat, when he knoweth to refuse the evil, and choose the good.

⁴ Now John himself had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his food was locusts and wild honey.

¹⁰ More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold;
Sweeter also than honey and the droppings of the honeycomb. ¹¹ Moreover by them is thy servant warned:
In keeping them there is great reward.

¹¹¹ Thy testimonies have I taken as a heritage for ever;
For they are the rejoicing of my heart.

¹ My son, if thou wilt receive my words,
And lay up my commandments with thee; ² So as to incline thine ear unto wisdom,
And apply thy heart to understanding; ³ Yea, if thou cry after discernment,
And lift up thy voice for understanding; ⁴ If thou seek her as silver,
And search for her as for hid treasures: ⁵ Then shalt thou understand the fear of Jehovah,
And find the knowledge of God.

¹⁰ For wisdom shall enter into thy heart,
And knowledge shall be pleasant unto thy soul;

¹³ Happy is the man that findeth wisdom,
And the man that getteth understanding. ¹⁴ For the gaining of it is better than the gaining of silver,
And the profit thereof than fine gold. ¹⁵ She is more precious than rubies:
And none of the things thou canst desire are to be compared unto her. ¹⁶ Length of days is in her right hand;
In her left hand are riches and honor. ¹⁷ Her ways are ways of pleasantness,
And all her paths are peace. ¹⁸ She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her:
And happy is every one that retaineth her.

¹⁸ For it is a pleasant thing if thou keep them within thee,
If they be established together upon thy lips.

¹⁸ For surely there is a reward;
And thy hope shall not be cut off.

¹⁶ Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy words were unto me a joy and the rejoicing of my heart: for I am called by thy name, O Jehovah, God of hosts.

²¹ Jesus said unto him, If thou wouldest be perfect, go, sell that which thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.

²⁵ But he that looketh into the perfect law, the [law] of liberty, and [so] continueth, being not a hearer that forgetteth but a doer that worketh, this man shall be blessed in his doing.

¹¹ As they went up the ascent to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw water, and said unto them, Is the seer here?

¹⁸ And the king said to Doeg, Turn thou, and fall upon the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, and he fell upon the priests, and he slew on that day fourscore and five persons that did wear a linen ephod. ¹⁹ And Nob, the city of the priests, smote he with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and sucklings, and oxen and asses and sheep, with the edge of the sword.

²⁰ Now therefore, O king, come down, according to all the desire of thy soul to come down; and our part shall be to deliver him up into the king's hand. ²¹ And Saul said, Blessed be ye of Jehovah; for ye have had compassion on me. ²² Go, I pray you, make yet more sure, and know and see his place where his haunt is, [and] who hath seen him there; for it is told me that he dealeth very subtly. ²³ See therefore, and take knowledge of all the lurking-places where he hideth himself, and come ye again to me of a certainty, and I will go with you: and it shall come to pass, if he be in the land, that I will search him out among all the thousands of Judah.

⁸ He sitteth in the lurking-places of the villages;
In the secret places doth he murder the innocent;
His eyes are privily set against the helpless. ⁹ He lurketh in secret as a lion in his covert;
He lieth in wait to catch the poor:
He doth catch the poor, when he draweth him in his net. ¹⁰ He croucheth, he boweth down,
And the helpless fall by his strong ones.

³² The wicked watcheth the righteous,
And seeketh to slay him.

⁶ They gather themselves together, they hide themselves,
They mark my steps,
Even as they have waited for my soul.

³ For, lo, they lie in wait for my soul;
The mighty gather themselves together against me:
Not for my transgression, nor for my sin, O Jehovah.

⁵ The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords;
They have spread a net by the wayside;
They have set gins for me. [Selah

¹¹ If they say, Come with us,
Let us lay wait for blood;
Let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause;

²⁸ Remove not the ancient landmark,
Which thy fathers have set.

¹⁸ And my people shall abide in a peaceable habitation, and in safe dwellings, and in quiet resting-places.

¹⁹ But I was like a gentle lamb that is led to the slaughter; and I knew not that they had devised devices against me, [saying], Let us destroy the tree with the fruit thereof, and let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name may be no more remembered.

⁴ and they took counsel together that they might take Jesus by subtlety, and kill him.

²⁴ but their plot became known to Saul. And they watched the gates also day and night that they might kill him:

¹⁶ But Paul's sister's son heard of their lying in wait, and he came and entered into the castle and told Paul.

³ asking a favor against him, that he would send for him to Jerusalem; laying a plot to kill him on the way.

¹⁰ And David said, As Jehovah liveth, Jehovah will smite him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall go down into battle and perish.

⁴ Then said Saul to his armorbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith, lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and abuse me. But his armorbearer would not; for he was sore afraid. Therefore Saul took his sword, and fell upon it.

¹⁰ So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king's wrath pacified.

¹⁹ He will deliver thee in six troubles;
Yea, in seven there shall no evil touch thee.

¹⁶ His mischief shall return upon his own head,
And his violence shall come down upon his own pate.

¹⁹ Many are the afflictions of the righteous;
But Jehovah delivereth him out of them all.

²⁴ Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down;
For Jehovah upholdeth him with his hand.

⁵ God will likewise destroy thee for ever;
He will take thee up, and pluck thee out of thy tent,
And root thee out of the land of the living. [Selah

¹⁷ A wicked messenger falleth into evil;
But a faithful ambassador is health.

³² The wicked is thrust down in his evil-doing;
But the righteous hath a refuge in his death.

¹⁴ Happy is the man that feareth alway;
But he that hardeneth his heart shall fall into mischief. ¹⁵ [As] a roaring lion, and a ranging bear,
[So is] a wicked ruler over a poor people. ¹⁶ The prince that lacketh understanding is also a great oppressor;
[But] he that hateth covetousness shall prolong his days. ¹⁷ A man that is laden with the blood of any person
Shall flee unto the pit; let no man stay him. ¹⁸ Whoso walketh uprightly shall be delivered;
But he that is perverse in [his] ways shall fall at once.

² The virgin of Israel is fallen; she shall no more rise: she is cast down upon her land; there is none to raise her up.

¹⁴ They that swear by the sin of Samaria, and say, As thy god, O Dan, liveth; and, As the way of Beer-sheba liveth; they shall fall, and never rise up again.

⁸ Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, Jehovah will be a light unto me. ⁹ I will bear the indignation of Jehovah, because I have sinned against him, until he plead my cause, and execute judgment for me: he will bring me forth to the light, [and] I shall behold his righteousness. ¹⁰ Then mine enemy shall see it, and shame shall cover her who said unto me, Where is Jehovah thy God? Mine eyes shall see [my desire] upon her; now shall she be trodden down as the mire of the streets.

²³ And immediately an angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

⁸ For we would not have you ignorant, brethren, concerning our affliction which befell [us] in Asia, that we were weighed down exceedingly, beyond our power, insomuch that we despaired even of life: ⁹ yea, we ourselves have had the sentence of death within ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God who raiseth the dead: ¹⁰ who delivered us out of so great a death, and will deliver: on whom we have set our hope that he will also still deliver us;

⁸ [we are] pressed on every side, yet not straitened; perplexed, yet not unto despair; ⁹ pursued, yet not forsaken; smitten down, yet not destroyed; ¹⁰ always bearing about in the body the dying of Jesus, that the life also of Jesus may be manifested in our body. ¹¹ For we who live are always delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. ¹² So then death worketh in us, but life in you.

²³ Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as one beside himself) I more; in labors more abundantly, in prisons more abundantly, in stripes above measure, in deaths oft. ²⁴ Of the Jews five times received I forty [stripes] save one. ²⁵ Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day have I been in the deep; ²⁶ [in] journeyings often, [in] perils of rivers, [in] perils of robbers, [in] perils from [my] countrymen, [in] perils from the Gentiles, [in] perils in the city, [in] perils in the wilderness, [in] perils in the sea, [in] perils among false brethren; ²⁷ [in] labor and travail, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness.

³ When they are saying, Peace and safety, then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall in no wise escape.

²⁰ Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye saints, and ye apostles, and ye prophets; for God hath judged your judgment on her.
²¹ And a strong angel took up a stone as it were a great millstone and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with a mighty fall shall Babylon, the great city, be cast down, and shall be found no more at all.

²⁵ And it came to pass, when their hearts were merry, that they said, Call for Samson, that he may make us sport. And they called for Samson out of the prison-house; and he made sport before them. And they set him between the pillars:

⁵ And when king David came to Bahurim, behold, there came out thence a man of the family of the house of Saul, whose name was Shimei, the son of Gera; he came out, and cursed still as he came. ⁶ And he cast stones at David, and at all the servants of king David: and all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his left. ⁷ And thus said Shimei when he cursed, Begone, begone, thou man of blood, and base fellow: ⁸ Jehovah hath returned upon thee all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose stead thou hast reigned; and Jehovah hath delivered the kingdom into the hand of Absalom thy son; and, behold, thou art [taken] in thine own mischief, because thou art a man of blood.
⁹ Then said Abishai the son of Zeruiah unto the king, Why should this dead dog curse my lord the king? let me go over, I pray thee, and take off his head. ¹⁰ And the king said, What have I to do with you, ye sons of Zeruiah? Because he curseth, and because Jehovah hath said unto him, Curse David; who then shall say, Wherefore hast thou done so? ¹¹ And David said to Abishai, and to all his servants, Behold, my son, who came forth from my bowels, seeketh my life: how much more [may] this Benjamite now [do it]? let him alone, and let him curse; for Jehovah hath bidden him. ¹² It may be that Jehovah will look on the wrong done unto me, and that Jehovah will requite me good for [his] cursing of me this day. ¹³ So David and his men went by the way; and Shimei went along on the hill-side over against him, and cursed as he went, and threw stones at him, and cast dust. ¹⁴ And the king, and all the people that were with him, came weary; and he refreshed himself there.

²⁹ If I have rejoiced at the destruction of him that hated me,
Or lifted up myself when evil found him

¹⁵ But in mine adversity they rejoiced, and gathered themselves together:
The abjects gathered themselves together against me, and I knew [it] not;
They did tear me, and ceased not:

¹⁹ Let not them that are mine enemies wrongfully rejoice over me;
Neither let them wink with the eye that hate me without a cause.

¹⁰ As with a sword in my bones, mine adversaries reproach me,
While they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?

⁵ Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker;
[And] he that is glad at calamity shall not be unpunished.

¹² But look not thou on the day of thy brother in the day of his disaster, and rejoice not over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither speak proudly in the day of distress.

⁶ rejoiceth not in unrighteousness, but rejoiceth with the truth; ⁷ beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.

²¹ Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom, that dwellest in the land of Uz:
The cup shall pass through unto thee also; thou shalt be drunken, and shalt make thyself naked. ²² The punishment of thine iniquity is accomplished, O daughter of Zion; he will no more carry thee away into captivity:
He will visit thine iniquity, O daughter of Edom; he will uncover thy sins.

¹⁵ And I am very sore displeased with the nations that are at ease; for I was but a little displeased, and they helped forward the affliction. ¹⁶ Therefore thus saith Jehovah: I am returned to Jerusalem with mercies; my house shall be built in it, saith Jehovah of hosts, and a line shall be stretched forth over Jerusalem.

²⁶ And he spake unto the congregation, saying, Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest ye be consumed in all their sins.

¹ Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the wicked,
Nor standeth in the way of sinners,
Nor sitteth in the seat of scoffers:

⁴ I have not sat with men of falsehood;
Neither will I go in with dissemblers. ⁵ I hate the assembly of evil-doers,
And will not sit with the wicked.

¹¹⁵ Depart from me, ye evil-doers,
That I may keep the commandments of my God.

¹ Be not thou envious against evil men;
Neither desire to be with them:

¹⁷ Wherefore
Come ye out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord,
And touch no unclean thing;
And I will receive you,

¹¹ and have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather even reprove them;

² For men shall be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, haughty, railers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, ³ without natural affection, implacable, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, no lovers of good, ⁴ traitors, headstrong, puffed up, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God; ⁵ holding a form of godliness, but having denied the power thereof: from these also turn away.

⁴ And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come forth, my people, out of her, that ye have no fellowship with her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues: ⁵ Yea, the light of the wicked shall be put out,
And the spark of his fire shall not shine. ⁶ The light shall be dark in his tent,
And his lamp above him shall be put out.

¹⁷ How oft is it that the lamp of the wicked is put out?
That their calamity cometh upon them?
That [God] distributeth sorrows in his anger?

¹⁷ The wicked shall be turned back unto Sheol,
Even all the nations that forget God.

⁶ Upon the wicked he will rain snares;
Fire and brimstone and burning wind shall be the portion of their cup.

⁹ The light of the righteous rejoiceth;
But the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.

²⁰ Whoso curseth his father or his mother,
His lamp shall be put out in blackness of darkness.

¹¹ Woe unto the wicked! [it shall be] ill [with him]; for what his hands have done shall be done unto him.

¹² but the sons of the kingdom shall be cast forth into the outer darkness: there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.}

⁸ And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are going out.

¹³ wild waves of the sea, foaming out their own shame; wandering stars, for whom the blackness of darkness hath been reserved for ever.

³¹ And Israel saw the great work which Jehovah did upon the Egyptians, and the people feared Jehovah: and they believed in Jehovah, and in his servant Moses.

¹ Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took [men]: ² and they rose up before Moses, with certain of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty princes of the congregation, called to the assembly, men of renown; ³ and they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto them, Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and Jehovah is among them: wherefore then lift ye up yourselves above the assembly of Jehovah?

⁵ and they said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations. ⁶ But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto Jehovah. ⁷ And Jehovah said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee; for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not be king over them.

¹² And when ye saw that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon came against you, ye said unto me, Nay, but a king shall reign over us; when Jehovah your God was your king. ¹³ Now therefore behold the king whom ye have chosen, and whom ye have asked for: and, behold, Jehovah hath set a king over you. ¹⁴ If ye will fear Jehovah, and serve him, and hearken unto his voice, and not rebel against the commandment of Jehovah, and both ye and also the king that reigneth over you be followers of Jehovah your God, [well]: ¹⁵ but if ye will not hearken unto the voice of Jehovah, but rebel against the commandment of Jehovah, then will the hand of Jehovah be against you, as it was against your fathers. ¹⁶ Now therefore stand still and see this great thing, which Jehovah will do before your eyes. ¹⁷ Is it not wheat harvest to-day? I will call unto Jehovah, that he may send thunder and rain; and ye shall know and see that your wickedness is great, which ye have done in the sight of Jehovah, in asking you a king. ¹⁸ So Samuel called unto Jehovah; and Jehovah sent thunder and rain that day: and all the people greatly feared Jehovah and Samuel.
¹⁹ And all the people said unto Samuel, Pray for thy servants unto Jehovah thy God, that we die not; for we have added unto all our sins [this] evil, to ask us a king.

⁶ And he said unto his men, Jehovah forbid that I should do this thing unto my lord, Jehovah's anointed, to put forth my hand against him, seeing he is Jehovah's anointed.

¹³ And there came a messenger to David, saying, The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom. ¹⁴ And David said unto all his servants that were with him at Jerusalem, Arise, and let us flee; for else none of us shall escape from Absalom: make speed to depart, lest he overtake us quickly, and bring down evil upon us, and smite the city with the edge of the sword. ¹⁵ And the king's servants said unto the king, Behold, thy servants are ready to do whatsoever my lord the king shall choose. ¹⁶ And the king went forth, and all his household after him. And the king left ten women, that were concubines, to keep the house. ¹⁷ And the king went forth, and all the people after him; and they tarried in Beth-merhak. ¹⁸ And all his servants passed on beside him; and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, six hundred men that came after him from Gath, passed on before the king.
¹⁹ Then said the king to Ittai the Gittite, Wherefore goest thou also with us? return, and abide with the king: for thou art a foreigner, and also an exile; [return] to thine own place. ²⁰ Whereas thou camest but yesterday, should I this day make thee go up and down with us, seeing I go whither I may? return thou, and take back thy brethren; mercy and truth be with thee. ²¹ And Ittai answered the king, and said, As Jehovah liveth, and as my lord the king liveth, surely in what place my lord the king shall be, whether for death or for life, even there also will thy servant be. ²² And David said to Ittai, Go and pass over. And Ittai the Gittite passed over, and all his men, and all the little ones that were with him. ²³ And all the country wept with a loud voice, and all the people passed over: the king also himself passed over the brook Kidron, and all the people passed over, toward the way of the wilderness.
²⁴ And, lo, Zadok also [came], and all the Levites with him, bearing the ark of the covenant of God; and they set down the ark of God; and Abiathar went up, until all the people had done passing out of the city. ²⁵ And the king said unto Zadok, Carry back the ark of God into the city: if I shall find favor in the eyes of Jehovah, he will bring me again, and show me both it, and his habitation: ²⁶ but if he say thus, I have no delight in thee; behold, here am I, let him do to me as seemeth good unto him. ²⁷ The king said also unto Zadok the priest, Art thou [not] a seer? return into the city in peace, and your two sons with you, Ahimaaz thy son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar. ²⁸ See, I will tarry at the fords of the wilderness, until there come word from you to certify me. ²⁹ Zadok therefore and Abiathar carried the ark of God again to Jerusalem: and they abode there.
³⁰ And David went up by the ascent of the [mount of] Olives, and wept as he went up; and he had his head covered, and went barefoot: and all the people that were with him covered every man his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up. ³¹ And one told David, saying, Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom. And David said, O Jehovah, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness. ³² And it came to pass, that, when David was come to the top [of the ascent], where God was worshipped, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat rent, and earth upon his head. ³³ And David said unto him, If thou passest on with me, then thou wilt be a burden unto me: ³⁴ but if thou return to the city, and say unto Absalom, I will be thy servant, O king; as I have been thy father's servant in time past, so will I now be thy servant; then wilt thou defeat for me the counsel of Ahithophel. ³⁵ And hast thou not there with thee Zadok and Abiathar the priests? therefore it shall be, that what thing soever thou shalt hear out of the king's house, thou shalt tell it to Zadok and Abiathar the priests. ³⁶ Behold, they have there with them their two sons, Ahimaaz, Zadok's son, and Jonathan, Abiathar's son; and by them ye shall send unto me everything that ye shall hear. ³⁷ So Hushai, David's friend, came into the city; and Absalom came into Jerusalem.

¹⁶ And when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.

² I [counsel thee], Keep the king's command, and that in regard of the oath of God. ³ Be not hasty to go out of his presence; persist not in an evil thing: for he doeth whatsoever pleaseth him. ⁴ For the king's word [hath] power; and who may say unto him, What doest thou? ⁵ Whoso keepeth the commandment shall know no evil thing; and a wise man's heart discerneth time and judgment:

²¹ They say unto him, Cζsar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Cζsar the things that are Cζsar's; and unto God the things that are God's.

¹ Let every soul be in subjection to the higher powers: for there is no power but of God; and the [powers] that be are ordained of God. ² Therefore he that resisteth the power, withstandeth the ordinance of God: and they that withstand shall receive to themselves judgment. ³ For rulers are not a terror to the good work, but to the evil. And wouldest thou have no fear of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise from the same: ⁴ for he is a minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is a minister of God, an avenger for wrath to him that doeth evil. ⁵ Wherefore [ye] must needs be in subjection, not only because of the wrath, but also for conscience' sake. ⁶ For this cause ye pay tribute also; for they are ministers of God's service, attending continually upon this very thing. ⁷ Render to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute [is due]; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor.

¹ Put them in mind to be in subjection to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready unto every good work,

¹³ Be subject to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether to the king, as supreme; ¹⁴ or unto governors, as sent by him for vengeance on evil-doers and for praise to them that do well. ¹⁵ For so is the will of God, that by well-doing ye should put to silence the ignorance of foolish men: ¹⁶ as free, and not using your freedom for a cloak of wickedness, but as bondservants of God. ¹⁷ Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.

³¹ And it came to pass, as he made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground clave asunder that was under them; ³² and the earth opened its mouth, and swallowed them up, and their households, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their goods. ³³ So they, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into Sheol: and the earth closed upon them, and they perished from among the assembly. ³⁴ And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them; for they said, Lest the earth swallow us up. ³⁵ And fire came forth from Jehovah, and devoured the two hundred and fifty men that offered the incense.

¹ Now the Philistines fought against Israel: and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines, and fell down slain in mount Gilboa. ² And the Philistines followed hard upon Saul and upon his sons; and the Philistines slew Jonathan, and Abinadab, and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul. ³ And the battle went sore against Saul, and the archers overtook him; and he was greatly distressed by reason of the archers. ⁴ Then said Saul to his armorbearer, Draw thy sword, and thrust me through therewith, lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through, and abuse me. But his armorbearer would not; for he was sore afraid. Therefore Saul took his sword, and fell upon it. ⁵ And when his armorbearer saw that Saul was dead, he likewise fell upon his sword, and died with him. ⁶ So Saul died, and his three sons, and his armorbearer, and all his men, that same day together.
⁷ And when the men of Israel that were on the other side of the valley, and they that were beyond the Jordan, saw that the men of Israel fled, and that Saul and his sons were dead, they forsook the cities, and fled; and the Philistines came and dwelt in them.

⁷ And the people of Israel were smitten there before the servants of David, and there was a great slaughter there that day of twenty thousand men. ⁸ For the battle was there spread over the face of all the country; and the forest devoured more people that day than the sword devoured.

¹⁶ And the children of Israel fled before Judah; and God delivered them into their hand. ¹⁷ And Abijah and his people slew them with a great slaughter: so there fell down slain of Israel five hundred thousand chosen men.

¹¹ Who knoweth the power of thine anger,
And thy wrath according to the fear that is due unto thee?

¹⁴ The wrath of a king is [as] messengers of death;
But a wise man will pacify it.

² The terror of a king is as the roaring of a lion:
He that provoketh him to anger sinneth [against] his own life.

¹¹ Ephraim is oppressed, he is crushed in judgment; because he was content to walk after [man's] command.

¹⁰ Where now is thy king, that he may save thee in all thy cities? and thy judges, of whom thou saidst, Give me a king and princes? ¹¹ I have given thee a king in mine anger, and have taken him away in my wrath.

¹⁵ Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment: thou shalt not respect the person of the poor, nor honor the person of the mighty; but in righteousness shalt thou judge thy neighbor.

¹⁷ Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; ye shall hear the small and the great alike; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is God's: and the cause that is too hard for you ye shall bring unto me, and I will hear it.

¹⁹ Thou shalt not wrest justice: thou shalt not respect persons; neither shalt thou take a bribe; for a bribe doth blind the eyes of the wise, and pervert the words of the righteous.

⁷ Now therefore let the fear of Jehovah be upon you; take heed and do it: for there is no iniquity with Jehovah our God, nor respect of persons, nor taking of bribes.

² How long will ye judge unjustly,
And respect the persons of the wicked? [Selah ³ Judge the poor and fatherless:
Do justice to the afflicted and destitute. ⁴ Rescue the poor and needy:
Deliver them out of the hand of the wicked.

⁴³ Whoso is wise will give heed to these things;
And they will consider the lovingkindnesses of Jehovah.

⁶ To understand a proverb, and a figure,
The words of the wise, and their dark sayings.

⁵ To respect the person of the wicked is not good,
[Nor] to turn aside the righteous in judgment.

¹⁷ Incline thine ear, and hear the words of the wise,
And apply thy heart unto my knowledge.

²¹ To have respect of persons is not good;
Neither that a man should transgress for a piece of bread.

¹ Who is as the wise man? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? A man's wisdom maketh his face to shine, and the hardness of his face is changed.

⁹ Who is wise, that he may understand these things? prudent, that he may know them? for the ways of Jehovah are right, and the just shall walk in them; but transgressors shall fall therein.

²⁴ Judge not according to appearance, but judge righteous judgment.}

²⁰ Them that sin reprove in the sight of all, that the rest also may be in fear. ²¹ I charge [thee] in the sight of God, and Christ Jesus, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without prejudice, doing nothing by partiality.

⁴ do ye not make distinctions among yourselves, and become judges with evil thoughts? ⁵ Hearken, my beloved brethren; did not God choose them that are poor as to the world [to be] rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he promised to them that love him? ⁶ But ye have dishonored the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you, and themselves drag you before the judgment-seats?

¹⁷ But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without variance, without hypocrisy.

¹⁷ And if ye call on him as Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to each man's work, pass the time of your sojourning in fear:

⁶ Thou shalt not wrest the justice [due] to thy poor in his cause. ⁷ Keep thee far from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous slay thou not: for I will not justify the wicked.

²⁶ He that withholdeth grain, the people shall curse him;
But blessing shall be upon the head of him that selleth it.

¹⁵ He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the righteous,
Both of them alike are an abomination to Jehovah.

²⁷ He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack;
But he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse.

¹⁰ Slander not a servant unto his master,
Lest he curse thee, and thou be held guilty.

²⁰ Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

²³ that justify the wicked for a bribe, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him!

²⁴ And they shall go forth, and look upon the dead bodies of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.

¹³ For from the least of them even unto the greatest of them every one is given to covetousness; and from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely. ¹⁴ They have healed also the hurt of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.

¹⁰ Therefore will I give their wives unto others, and their fields to them that shall possess them: for every one from the least even unto the greatest is given to covetousness; from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely. ¹¹ And they have healed the hurt of the daughter of my people slightly, saying, Peace, peace; when there is no peace.

²² Because with lies ye have grieved the heart of the righteous, whom I have not made sad; and strengthened the hands of the wicked, that he should not return from his wicked way, and be saved alive:

¹⁷ Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thy heart: thou shalt surely rebuke thy neighbor, and not bear sin because of him.

¹³ For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever, for the iniquity which he knew, because his sons did bring a curse upon themselves, and he restrained them not.

¹⁹ And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith Jehovah, Hast thou killed and also taken possession? And thou shalt speak unto him, saying, Thus saith Jehovah, In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick thy blood, even thine. ²⁰ And Ahab said to Elijah, Hast thou found me, O mine enemy? And he answered, I have found thee, because thou hast sold thyself to do that which is evil in the sight of Jehovah.

⁷ Then I consulted with myself, and contended with the nobles and the rulers, and said unto them, Ye exact usury, every one of his brother. And I held a great assembly against them. ⁸ And I said unto them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, that were sold unto the nations; and would ye even sell your brethren, and should they be sold unto us? Then held they their peace, and found never a word. ⁹ Also I said, The thing that ye do is not good: ought ye not to walk in the fear of our God, because of the reproach of the nations our enemies?

⁸ And it grieved me sore: therefore I cast forth all the household stuff of Tobiah out of the chamber. ⁹ Then I commanded, and they cleansed the chambers: and thither brought I again the vessels of the house of God, with the meal-offerings and the frankincense.
¹⁰ And I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them; so that the Levites and the singers, that did the work, were fled every one to his field. ¹¹ Then contended I with the rulers, and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place.

¹⁷ Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said unto them, What evil thing is this that ye do, and profane the sabbath day?

²⁵ And I contended with them, and cursed them, and smote certain of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, [saying], Ye shall not give your daughters unto their sons, nor take their daughters for your sons, or for yourselves.

²⁸ And one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite: therefore I chased him from me.

¹⁶ I was a father to the needy:
And the cause of him that I knew not I searched out. ¹⁷ And I brake the jaws of the unrighteous,
And plucked the prey out of his teeth. ¹⁸ Then I said, I shall die in my nest,
And I shall multiply my days as the sand:

²³ He that rebuketh a man shall afterward find more favor
Than he that flattereth with the tongue.

⁴ For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.

²⁰ Them that sin reprove in the sight of all, that the rest also may be in fear.

² preach the word; be urgent in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.

¹³ This testimony is true. For which cause reprove them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith,

¹⁵ These things speak and exhort and reprove with all authority. Let no man despise thee.

³⁸ And Pharaoh said unto his servants, Can we find such a one as this, a man in whom the spirit of God is? ³⁹ And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, Forasmuch as God hath showed thee all of this, there is none so discreet and wise as thou: ⁴⁰ thou shalt be over my house, and according unto thy word shall all my people be ruled: only in the throne will I be greater than thou. ⁴¹ And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, See, I have set thee over all the land of Egypt. ⁴² And Pharaoh took off his signet ring from his hand, and put it upon Joseph's hand, and arrayed him in vestures of fine linen, and put a gold chain about his neck; ⁴³ and he made him to ride in the second chariot which he had; and they cried before him, Bow the knee: and he set him over all the land of Egypt. ⁴⁴ And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, I am Pharaoh, and without thee shall no man lift up his hand or his foot in all the land of Egypt. ⁴⁵ And Pharaoh called Joseph's name Zaphenath-paneah; and he gave him to wife Asenath, the daughter of Poti-phera priest of On. And Joseph went out over the land of Egypt.
⁴⁶ And Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. And Joseph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt. ⁴⁷ And in the seven plenteous years the earth brought forth by handfuls. ⁴⁸ And he gathered up all the food of the seven years which were in the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities: the food of the field, which was round about every city, laid he up in the same. ⁴⁹ And Joseph laid up grain as the sand of the sea, very much, until he left off numbering; for it was without number. ⁵⁰ And unto Joseph were born two sons before the year of famine came, whom Asenath, the daughter of Poti-phera priest of On, bare unto him. ⁵¹ And Joseph called the name of the first-born Manasseh: For, [said he], God hath made me forget all my toil, and all my father's house. ⁵² And the name of the second called he Ephraim: For God hath made me fruitful in the land of my affliction. ⁵³ And the seven years of plenty, that was in the land of Egypt, came to an end. ⁵⁴ And the seven years of famine began to come, according as Joseph had said: and there was famine in all lands; but in all the land of Egypt there was bread. ⁵⁵ And when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread: and Pharaoh said unto all the Egyptians, Go unto Joseph; what he saith to you, do. ⁵⁶ And the famine was over all the face of the earth: and Joseph opened all the store-houses, and sold unto the Egyptians; and the famine was sore in the land of Egypt. ⁵⁷ And all countries came into Egypt to Joseph to buy grain, because the famine was sore in all the earth.

²⁵ How forcible are words of uprightness!
But your reproof, what doth it reprove?

²³ A man hath joy in the answer of his mouth;
And a word in due season, how good is it!

¹ The plans of the heart belong to man;
But the answer of the tongue is from Jehovah.

¹¹ A word fitly spoken
Is [like] apples of gold in network of silver. ¹² [As] an ear-ring of gold, and an ornament of fine gold,
[So is] a wise reprover upon an obedient ear.

⁴⁶ Then the king Nebuchadnezzar fell upon his face, and worshipped Daniel, and commanded that they should offer an oblation and sweet odors unto him. ⁴⁷ The king answered unto Daniel, and said, Of a truth your God is the God of gods, and the Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, seeing thou hast been able to reveal this secret. ⁴⁸ Then the king made Daniel great, and gave him many great gifts, and made him to rule over the whole province of Babylon, and to be chief governor over all the wise men of Babylon.

¹⁷ And Jesus said unto them, Render unto Cζsar the things that are Cζsar's, and unto God the things that are God's. And they marvelled greatly at him.
¹⁸ And there come unto him Sadducees, who say that there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying,

³² And the scribe said unto him, Of a truth, Teacher, thou hast well said that he is one; and there is none other but he: ³³ and to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbor as himself, is much more than all whole burnt-offerings and sacrifices. ³⁴ And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question.

¹⁷ And the king commanded, and they hewed out great stones, costly stones, to lay the foundation of the house with wrought stone. ¹⁸ And Solomon's builders and Hiram's builders and the Gebalites did fashion them, and prepared the timber and the stones to build the house.

⁷ And the house, when it was in building, was built of stone made ready at the quarry; and there was neither hammer nor axe nor any tool of iron heard in the house, while it was in building.

²⁸ For which of you, desiring to build a tower, doth not first sit down and count the cost, whether he have [wherewith] to complete it? ²⁹ Lest haply, when he hath laid a foundation, and is not able to finish, all that behold begin to mock him, ³⁰ saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

¹⁶ Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

¹ Thou shalt not take up a false report: put not thy hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness.

⁹ Then answered Doeg the Edomite, who stood by the servants of Saul, and said, I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub. ¹⁰ And he inquired of Jehovah for him, and gave him victuals, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine.

⁹ And she wrote in the letters, saying, Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people: ¹⁰ and set two men, base fellows, before him, and let them bear witness against him, saying, Thou didst curse God and the king. And then carry him out, and stone him to death.
¹¹ And the men of his city, even the elders and the nobles who dwelt in his city, did as Jezebel had sent unto them, according as it was written in the letters which she had sent unto them. ¹² They proclaimed a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people. ¹³ And the two men, the base fellows, came in and sat before him: and the base fellows bare witness against him, even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, Naboth did curse God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him to death with stones.

³ And Jehovah said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job? for there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and turneth away from evil: and he still holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.

⁷ For without cause have they hid for me their net [in] a pit;
Without cause have they digged [a pit] for my soul.

¹¹ Unrighteous witnesses rise up;
They ask me of things that I know not.

¹ For the Chief Musician. Maschil of David; when Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul, and said unto him, David is come to the house of Ahimelech.

Why boastest thou thyself in mischief, O mighty man?
The lovingkindness of God [endureth] continually.

⁵ A faithful witness will not lie;
But a false witness uttereth lies.

⁵ A false witness shall not be unpunished;
And he that uttereth lies shall not escape.

⁹ A false witness shall not be unpunished;
And he that uttereth lies shall perish.

²⁸ A false witness shall perish;
But the man that heareth shall speak so as to endure.

¹⁸ A man that beareth false witness against his neighbor
Is a maul, and a sword, and a sharp arrow.

⁵⁹ Now the chief priests and the whole council sought false witness against Jesus, that they might put him to death; ⁶⁰ and they found it not, though many false witnesses came. But afterward came two,

²³ And he said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out exceedingly, saying, Let him be crucified.

²⁵ But [this cometh to pass], that the word may be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.

²⁵ Wherefore, putting away falsehood, speak ye truth each one with his neighbor: for we are members one of another.

⁹ lie not one to another; seeing that ye have put off the old man with his doings,

⁸ But for the fearful, and unbelieving, and abominable, and murderers, and fornicators, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, their part shall be in the lake that burneth with fire and brimstone; which is the second death.

¹⁵ Without are the dogs, and the sorcerers, and the fornicators, and the murderers, and the idolaters, and every one that loveth and maketh a lie.

¹¹ Then three thousand men of Judah went down to the cleft of the rock of Etam, and said to Samson, Knowest thou not that the Philistines are rulers over us? what then is this that thou hast done unto us? And he said unto them, As they did unto me, so have I done unto them.

²² And Absalom spake unto Amnon neither good nor bad; for Absalom hated Amnon, because he had forced his sister Tamar.
²³ And it came to pass after two full years, that Absalom had sheep-shearers in Baal-hazor, which is beside Ephraim: and Absalom invited all the king's sons. ²⁴ And Absalom came to the king, and said, Behold now, thy servant hath sheep-shearers; let the king, I pray thee, and his servants go with thy servant. ²⁵ And the king said to Absalom, Nay, my son, let us not all go, lest we be burdensome unto thee. And he pressed him: howbeit he would not go, but blessed him. ²⁶ Then said Absalom, If not, I pray thee, let my brother Amnon go with us. And the king said unto him, Why should he go with thee? ²⁷ But Absalom pressed him, and he let Amnon and all the king's sons go with him. ²⁸ And Absalom commanded his servants, saying, Mark ye now, when Amnon's heart is merry with wine; and when I say unto you, Smite Amnon, then kill him; fear not; have not I commanded you? be courageous, and be valiant.

²² Say not thou, I will recompense evil:
Wait for Jehovah, and he will save thee.

²¹ If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat;
And if he be thirsty, give him water to drink: ²² For thou wilt heap coals of fire upon his head,
And Jehovah will reward thee.

³⁹ but I say unto you, Resist not him that is evil: but whosoever smiteth thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also. ⁴⁰ And if any man would go to law with thee, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also. ⁴¹ And whosoever shall compel thee to go one mile, go with him two. ⁴² Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away.
⁴³ Ye have heard that it was said, Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy: ⁴⁴ but I say unto you, Love your enemies, and pray for them that persecute you;

¹⁷ Render to no man evil for evil. Take thought for things honorable in the sight of all men. ¹⁸ If it be possible, as much as in you lieth, be at peace with all men. ¹⁹ Avenge not yourselves, beloved, but give place unto the wrath [of God]: for it is written, Vengeance belongeth unto me; I will recompense, saith the Lord. ²⁰ But if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him to drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head. ²¹ Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.

¹⁵ See that none render unto any one evil for evil; but always follow after that which is good, one toward another, and toward all.

⁸ According as I have seen, they that plow iniquity,
And sow trouble, reap the same.

²⁷ Lo this, we have searched it, so it is;
Hear it, and know thou it for thy good.

¹⁷ I will show thee, hear thou me;
And that which I have seen I will declare

²⁵ I have been young, and now am old;
Yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken,
Nor his seed begging bread.

⁴² The upright shall see it, and be glad;
And all iniquity shall stop her mouth.

⁶ Go to the ant, thou sluggard;
Consider her ways, and be wise: ⁷ Which having no chief,
Overseer, or ruler, ⁸ Provideth her bread in the summer,
And gathereth her food in the harvest. ⁹ How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard?
When wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? ¹⁰ [Yet] a little sleep, a little slumber,
A little folding of the hands to sleep: ¹¹ So shall thy poverty come as a robber,
And thy want as an armed man. ¹² A worthless person, a man of iniquity,
Is he that walketh with a perverse mouth; ¹³ That winketh with his eyes, that speaketh with his feet,
That maketh signs with his fingers; ¹⁴ In whose heart is perverseness,
Who deviseth evil continually,
Who soweth discord. ¹⁵ Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly;
On a sudden shall he be broken, and that without remedy. ¹⁶ There are six things which Jehovah hateth;
Yea, seven which are an abomination unto him: ¹⁷ Haughty eyes, a lying tongue,
And hands that shed innocent blood; ¹⁸ A heart that deviseth wicked purposes,
Feet that are swift in running to mischief, ¹⁹ A false witness that uttereth lies,
And he that soweth discord among brethren.

³² He that committeth adultery with a woman is void of understanding:
He doeth it who would destroy his own soul.

¹³ In the lips of him that hath discernment wisdom is found;
But a rod is for the back of him that is void of understanding.

¹¹ He that tilleth his land shall have plenty of bread;
But he that followeth after vain [persons] is void of understanding.

¹ Then I returned and saw all the oppressions that are done under the sun: and, behold, the tears of such as were oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of their oppressors there was power; but they had no comforter. ² Wherefore I praised the dead that have been long dead more than the living that are yet alive; ³ yea, better than them both [did I esteem] him that hath not yet been, who hath not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.
⁴ Then I saw all labor and every skilful work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbor. This also is vanity and a striving after wind. ⁵ The fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh. ⁶ Better is a handful, with quietness, than two handfuls with labor and striving after wind.
⁷ Then I returned and saw vanity under the sun. ⁸ There is one that is alone, and he hath not a second; yea, he hath neither son nor brother; yet is there no end of all his labor, neither are his eyes satisfied with riches. For whom then, [saith he], do I labor, and deprive my soul of good? This also is vanity, yea, it is a sore travail.

¹⁵ All this have I seen in my days of vanity: there is a righteous man that perisheth in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongeth [his life] in his evil-doing.

⁹ All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: [there is] a time wherein one man hath power over another to his hurt. ¹⁰ So I saw the wicked buried, and they came [to the grave]; and they that had done right went away from the holy place, and were forgotten in the city: this also is vanity. ¹¹ Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.

¹⁷ And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in toil shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; ¹⁸ thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; ¹⁹ in the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

⁴⁰ Let thistles grow instead of wheat,
And cockle instead of barley.

The words of Job are ended.

²³ The fear of Jehovah [tendeth] to life;
And he [that hath it] shall abide satisfied;
He shall not be visited with evil.

⁴ The sluggard will not plow by reason of the winter;
Therefore he shall beg in harvest, and have nothing.

¹³ The sluggard saith, There is a lion without;
I shall be slain in the streets.

²¹ For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty;
And drowsiness will clothe [a man] with rags.

¹⁸ By slothfulness the roof sinketh in; and through idleness of the hands the house leaketh.

⁵ And now I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up; I will break down the wall thereof, and it shall be trodden down:

³ For thus saith Jehovah to the men of Judah and to Jerusalem, Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among thorns.

⁷ And others fell upon the thorns; and the thorns grew up and choked them:

²² And he that was sown among the thorns, this is he that heareth the word; and the care of the world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.

⁸ but if it beareth thorns and thistles, it is rejected and nigh unto a curse; whose end is to be burned.

¹¹ And all Israel shall hear, and fear, and shall do not more any such wickedness as this is in the midst of thee.

²¹ And all the men of his city shall stone him to death with stones: so shalt thou put away the evil from the midst of thee; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.

²⁹ Oh that they were wise, that they understood this,
That they would consider their latter end!

¹⁷ What is man, that thou shouldest magnify him,
And that thou shouldest set thy mind upon him,

⁴ Stand in awe, and sin not:
Commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. [Selah

¹⁹ But Mary kept all these sayings, pondering them in her heart.

⁵¹ And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth; and he was subject unto them: and his mother kept all [these] sayings in her heart.

⁶ Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.

¹¹ Now these things happened unto them by way of example; and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages are come.

⁵ Now I desire to put you in remembrance, though ye know all things once for all, that the Lord, having saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed them that believed not. ⁶ And angels that kept not their own principality, but left their proper habitation, he hath kept in everlasting bonds under darkness unto the judgment of the great day. ⁷ Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them, having in like manner with these given themselves over to fornication and gone after strange flesh, are set forth as an example, suffering the punishment of eternal fire.

⁴ Give not sleep to thine eyes,
Nor slumber to thine eyelids; ⁵ Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand [of the hunter],
And as a bird from the hand of the fowler.
⁶ Go to the ant, thou sluggard;
Consider her ways, and be wise: ⁷ Which having no chief,

¹¹ And this, knowing the season, that already it is time for you to awake out of sleep: for now is salvation nearer to us than when we [first] believed.

¹⁴ Wherefore [he] saith, Awake, thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall shine upon thee.

⁶ so then let us not sleep, as do the rest, but let us watch and be sober. ⁷ For they that sleep sleep in the night; and they that are drunken are drunken in the night. ⁸ But let us, since we are of the day, be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love; and for a helmet, the hope of salvation.

⁴ He becometh poor that worketh with a slack hand;
But the hand of the diligent maketh rich.

⁴ The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing;
But the soul of the diligent shall be made fat.
