² Οἴδατε (You know) ὅτι (that) ὅτε (when) ἔθνη (pagans) ἦτε (you were), πρὸς (to) τὰ (-) εἴδωλα (idols) τὰ (-) ἄφωνα (mute), ὡς (even as) ἂν (-) ἤγεσθε (you were led), ἀπαγόμενοι (being carried away).

¹⁴ ἄφετε (Leave) αὐτούς (them)! τυφλοί (Blind) εἰσιν (they are) ὁδηγοί (guides) τυφλῶν (of the blind). τυφλὸς (Blind) δὲ (now) τυφλὸν (blind) ἐὰν (if) ὁδηγῇ (they lead), ἀμφότεροι (both) εἰς (into) βόθυνον (a pit) πεσοῦνται (will fall).”

¹¹ καὶ (And) ταῦτά (such) τινες (some of) ἦτε (you were); ἀλλὰ (but) ἀπελούσασθε (you were washed), ἀλλὰ (but) ἡγιάσθητε (you were sanctified), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐδικαιώθητε (you were justified), ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) καὶ (and) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) Πνεύματι (Spirit) τοῦ (of the) Θεοῦ (God) ἡμῶν (of us).

⁸ Ἀλλὰ (But) τότε (at that time) μὲν (indeed) οὐκ (not) εἰδότες (knowing) Θεὸν (God), ἐδουλεύσατε (you were enslaved) τοῖς (to those) φύσει (by nature) μὴ (not) οὖσιν (being) θεοῖς (gods);

¹¹ Διὸ (Therefore) μνημονεύετε (remember) ὅτι (that) ποτὲ (formerly) ὑμεῖς (you) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles) ἐν (in) σαρκί (the flesh), οἱ (the ones) λεγόμενοι (being called) ἀκροβυστία (the uncircumcision) ὑπὸ (by) τῆς (that) λεγομένης (being called) περιτομῆς (the circumcision), ἐν (in) σαρκὶ (the flesh) χειροποιήτου (made by hands)— ¹² ὅτι (that) ἦτε (you were) τῷ (at the) καιρῷ (time) ἐκείνῳ (that) χωρὶς (separate from) Χριστοῦ (Christ), ἀπηλλοτριωμένοι (alienated from) τῆς (the) πολιτείας (commonwealth) τοῦ (-) Ἰσραὴλ (of Israel), καὶ (and) ξένοι (strangers) τῶν (to the) διαθηκῶν (covenants) τῆς (of the) ἐπαγγελίας (promise), ἐλπίδα (hope) μὴ (not) ἔχοντες (having) καὶ (and) ἄθεοι (without God) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world).

¹⁷ Τοῦτο (This) οὖν (therefore) λέγω (I say) καὶ (and) μαρτύρομαι (testify) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord): μηκέτι (No longer) ὑμᾶς (are you) περιπατεῖν (to walk) καθὼς (as) καὶ (also) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles) περιπατεῖ (are walking), ἐν (in) ματαιότητι (the futility) τοῦ (of the) νοὸς (mind) αὐτῶν (of them), ¹⁸ ἐσκοτωμένοι (being darkened) τῇ (in the) διανοίᾳ (understanding), ὄντες (being) ἀπηλλοτριωμένοι (alienated from) τῆς (the) ζωῆς (life) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), διὰ (because of) τὴν (the) ἄγνοιαν (ignorance) τὴν (-) οὖσαν (being) ἐν (in) αὐτοῖς (them), διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) πώρωσιν (hardness) τῆς (of the) καρδίας (heart) αὐτῶν (of them),

⁹ αὐτοὶ (They themselves) γὰρ (for) περὶ (concerning) ἡμῶν (us) ἀπαγγέλλουσιν (report) ὁποίαν (what) εἴσοδον (reception) ἔσχομεν (we had) πρὸς (from) ὑμᾶς (you), καὶ (and) πῶς (how) ἐπεστρέψατε (you turned) πρὸς (to) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (-) εἰδώλων (idols), δουλεύειν (to serve) Θεῷ (the God) ζῶντι (living) καὶ (and) ἀληθινῷ (true),

³ Ἦμεν (Were) γάρ (for) ποτε (once) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we ourselves) ἀνόητοι (foolish), ἀπειθεῖς (disobedient), πλανώμενοι (being deceived), δουλεύοντες (serving) ἐπιθυμίαις (lusts) καὶ (and) ἡδοναῖς (pleasures) ποικίλαις (various), ἐν (in) κακίᾳ (malice) καὶ (and) φθόνῳ (envy) διάγοντες (living), στυγητοί (hateful), μισοῦντες (hating) ἀλλήλους (one another).

¹⁸ εἰδότες (knowing) ὅτι (that) οὐ (not) φθαρτοῖς (by perishable things) — ἀργυρίῳ (by silver) ἢ (or) χρυσίῳ (by gold) — ἐλυτρώθητε (you were redeemed) ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) ματαίας (futile) ὑμῶν (of you) ἀναστροφῆς (manner of life) πατροπαραδότου (handed down from your fathers),

³ ἀρκετὸς (Is sufficient) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) παρεληλυθὼς (past) χρόνος (time) τὸ (the) βούλημα (desire) τῶν (of the) ἐθνῶν (Gentiles) κατειργάσθαι (to have carried out), πεπορευμένους (having walked) ἐν (in) ἀσελγείαις (sensuality), ἐπιθυμίαις (lusts), οἰνοφλυγίαις (drunkenness), κώμοις (orgies), πότοις (carousing), καὶ (and) ἀθεμίτοις (abominable) εἰδωλολατρίαις (idolatries).
