²² οὐδὲ (Not even) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) κρίνει (judges) οὐδένα (no one), ἀλλὰ (but) τὴν (-) κρίσιν (judgment) πᾶσαν (all) δέδωκεν (has given) τῷ (to the) Υἱῷ (Son), ²³ ἵνα (so that) πάντες (all) τιμῶσι (may honor) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son), καθὼς (even as) τιμῶσι (they honor) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father). ὁ (He who) μὴ (not) τιμῶν (is honoring) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son), οὐ (not) τιμᾷ (is honoring) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father), τὸν (the One) πέμψαντα (having sent) αὐτόν (Him).

⁵ ὅτι (because) καθὼς (as) περισσεύει (abound) τὰ (the) παθήματα (sufferings) τοῦ (of the) Χριστοῦ (Christ) εἰς (toward) ἡμᾶς (us), οὕτως (thus so) διὰ (through) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (Christ) περισσεύει (abounds) καὶ (also) ἡ (the) παράκλησις (comfort) ἡμῶν (of us). ⁶ Εἴτε (If) δὲ (however) θλιβόμεθα (we are constricted), ὑπὲρ (it is for) τῆς (-) ὑμῶν (your) παρακλήσεως (comfort) καὶ (and) σωτηρίας (salvation); εἴτε (if) παρακαλούμεθα (we are encouraged), ὑπὲρ (it is for) τῆς (-) ὑμῶν (your) παρακλήσεως (comfort), τῆς (-) ἐνεργουμένης (operating) ἐν (in) ὑπομονῇ (the endurance) τῶν (of the) αὐτῶν (same) παθημάτων (sufferings) ὧν (that) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we) πάσχομεν (suffer).

¹⁰ Ἡμεῖς (We) μωροὶ (are fools) διὰ (on account of) Χριστόν (Christ), ὑμεῖς (you) δὲ (however) φρόνιμοι (wise) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ); ἡμεῖς (we) ἀσθενεῖς (weak), ὑμεῖς (you) δὲ (however) ἰσχυροί (strong); ὑμεῖς (You) ἔνδοξοι (honored), ἡμεῖς (we) δὲ (however) ἄτιμοι (without honor). ¹¹ ἄχρι (As far as) τῆς (the) ἄρτι (present) ὥρας (hour), καὶ (both) πεινῶμεν (we hunger) καὶ (and) διψῶμεν (thirst), καὶ (and) γυμνιτεύομεν (are poorly clad), καὶ (and) κολαφιζόμεθα (are buffeted), καὶ (and) ἀστατοῦμεν (wander homeless), ¹² καὶ (and) κοπιῶμεν (we toil), ἐργαζόμενοι (working) ταῖς (with our) ἰδίαις (own) χερσίν (hands). λοιδορούμενοι (Being reviled), εὐλογοῦμεν (we bless); διωκόμενοι (being persecuted), ἀνεχόμεθα (we endure); ¹³ δυσφημούμενοι (being slandered), παρακαλοῦμεν (we entreat). ὡς (As) περικαθάρματα (the scum) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (earth) ἐγενήθημεν (we have become), πάντων (of all the) περίψημα (refuse), ἕως (until) ἄρτι (now).

¹⁰ πάντοτε (always) τὴν (the) νέκρωσιν (death) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) ἐν (in) τῷ (our) σώματι (body) περιφέροντες (carrying around), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (also) ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) σώματι (body) ἡμῶν (of us) φανερωθῇ (should be manifested); ¹¹ ἀεὶ (always) γὰρ (for) ἡμεῖς (we) οἱ (the) ζῶντες (living) εἰς (to) θάνατον (death) παραδιδόμεθα (are being delivered) διὰ (on account of) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (also) ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) φανερωθῇ (may be manifested) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) θνητῇ (mortal) σαρκὶ (flesh) ἡμῶν (of us).

²³ διάκονοι (Servants) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) εἰσιν (are they)? παραφρονῶν (As being beside myself) λαλῶ (I speak) ὑπὲρ (above measure): ἐγώ (I too), ἐν (in) κόποις (labors) περισσοτέρως (more abundantly), ἐν (in) φυλακαῖς (imprisonments) περισσοτέρως (more abundantly), ἐν (in) πληγαῖς (beatings) ὑπερβαλλόντως (above measure), ἐν (in) θανάτοις (deaths) πολλάκις (often). ²⁴ Ὑπὸ (From) Ἰουδαίων (the Jews) πεντάκις (five times) τεσσεράκοντα (forty lashes) παρὰ (minus) μίαν (one) ἔλαβον (I received). ²⁵ τρὶς (Three times) ἐραβδίσθην (I was beaten with rods), ἅπαξ (once) ἐλιθάσθην (I was stoned), τρὶς (three times) ἐναυάγησα (I was shipwrecked), νυχθήμερον (a night and a day) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) βυθῷ (deep sea) πεποίηκα (I have passed); ²⁶ ὁδοιπορίαις (in journeyings) πολλάκις (often), κινδύνοις (in perils) ποταμῶν (of rivers), κινδύνοις (in perils) λῃστῶν (of robbers); κινδύνοις (in perils) ἐκ (from my own) γένους (race), κινδύνοις (in perils) ἐξ (from) ἐθνῶν (the Gentiles); κινδύνοις (in perils) ἐν (in) πόλει (the city), κινδύνοις (in perils) ἐν (in) ἐρημίᾳ (the wilderness); κινδύνοις (in perils) ἐν (on) θαλάσσῃ (the sea), κινδύνοις (in perils) ἐν (among) ψευδαδέλφοις (false brothers); ²⁷ κόπῳ (in labor) καὶ (and) μόχθῳ (toil), ἐν (in) ἀγρυπνίαις (watchings) πολλάκις (often); ἐν (in) λιμῷ (hunger) καὶ (and) δίψει (thirst), ἐν (in) νηστείαις (fastings) πολλάκις (often); ἐν (in) ψύχει (cold) καὶ (and) γυμνότητι (nakedness). ²⁸ Χωρὶς (Besides) τῶν (the things) παρεκτὸς (external), ἡ (the) ἐπίστασίς (pressure) μοι (on me) ἡ (-) καθ’ (on every) ἡμέραν (day) ἡ (is my) μέριμνα (care) πασῶν (for all) τῶν (the) ἐκκλησιῶν (churches). ²⁹ τίς (Who) ἀσθενεῖ (is weak), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἀσθενῶ (I am weak)? τίς (Who) σκανδαλίζεται (is led into sin), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἐγὼ (I) πυροῦμαι (do burn inwardly)? ³⁰ Εἰ (If) καυχᾶσθαι (to boast) δεῖ (it behooves me), τὰ (in the things) τῆς (of the) ἀσθενείας (weakness) μου (of me) καυχήσομαι (I will boast).

²⁰ κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) ἀποκαραδοκίαν (earnest expectation) καὶ (and) ἐλπίδα (hope) μου (of me) ὅτι (that) ἐν (in) οὐδενὶ (nothing) αἰσχυνθήσομαι (I will be ashamed), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐν (in) πάσῃ (all) παρρησίᾳ (boldness), ὡς (as) πάντοτε (always) καὶ (also) νῦν (now), μεγαλυνθήσεται (will be magnified) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) σώματί (body) μου (of me), εἴτε (whether) διὰ (by) ζωῆς (life) εἴτε (or) διὰ (by) θανάτου (death).

⁵ ὅτε (When) δὲ (then) ἐγένετο (it happened that) ἐξαρτίσαι (had completed) ἡμᾶς (we) τὰς (the) ἡμέρας (days), ἐξελθόντες (having set out), ἐπορευόμεθα (we journeyed), προπεμπόντων (accompanying) ἡμᾶς (us) πάντων (all) σὺν (with) γυναιξὶ (wives) καὶ (and) τέκνοις (children), ἕως (as far as) ἔξω (outside) τῆς (the) πόλεως (city). καὶ (And) θέντες (having bowed) τὰ (the) γόνατα (knees) ἐπὶ (on) τὸν (the) αἰγιαλὸν (shore), προσευξάμενοι (having prayed),

³ Οὐ (Not) μόνον (only so) δέ (now), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) καυχώμεθα (we glory) ἐν (in) ταῖς (-) θλίψεσιν (tribulations), εἰδότες (knowing) ὅτι (that) ἡ (-) θλῖψις (tribulation), ὑπομονὴν (perseverance) κατεργάζεται (produces); ⁴ ἡ (-) δὲ (And) ὑπομονὴ (perseverance), δοκιμήν (character); ἡ (-) δὲ (and) δοκιμὴ (character), ἐλπίδα (hope). ⁵ ἡ (-) δὲ (And) ἐλπὶς (hope) οὐ (not) καταισχύνει (does make us ashamed), ὅτι (because) ἡ (the) ἀγάπη (love) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐκκέχυται (has been poured out) ἐν (into) ταῖς (the) καρδίαις (hearts) ἡμῶν (of us) διὰ (through) Πνεύματος (the Spirit) Ἁγίου (Holy), τοῦ (the One) δοθέντος (having been given) ἡμῖν (to us).

²⁸ Οἴδαμεν (We know) δὲ (now) ὅτι (that) τοῖς (to those) ἀγαπῶσιν (loving) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God), πάντα (all things) συνεργεῖ (works together) (ὁ (-) θεὸς) (God) εἰς (for) ἀγαθόν (good), τοῖς (to those) κατὰ (according to) πρόθεσιν (His purpose) κλητοῖς (called) οὖσιν (being).

²¹ Ὥστε (Therefore) μηδεὶς (no one) καυχάσθω (let boast) ἐν (in) ἀνθρώποις (men). πάντα (All things) γὰρ (for) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐστιν (are), ²² εἴτε (whether) Παῦλος (Paul), εἴτε (or) Ἀπολλῶς (Apollos), εἴτε (or) Κηφᾶς (Cephas), εἴτε (or the) κόσμος (world), εἴτε (or) ζωὴ (life), εἴτε (or) θάνατος (death), εἴτε (or) ἐνεστῶτα (things present), εἴτε (or) μέλλοντα (things to come)— πάντα (all) ὑμῶν (yours), ²³ ὑμεῖς (you) δὲ (now) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), Χριστὸς (Christ) δὲ (now) Θεοῦ (of God).

⁴ ὁ (the One) παρακαλῶν (comforting) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐπὶ (in) πάσῃ (all) τῇ (the) θλίψει (tribulation) ἡμῶν (of us), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) δύνασθαι (to be able) ἡμᾶς (us) παρακαλεῖν (to comfort) τοὺς (those) ἐν (in) πάσῃ (every) θλίψει (tribulation) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) παρακλήσεως (comfort) ἧς (with which) παρακαλούμεθα (we are comforted) αὐτοὶ (ourselves) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God),

¹⁵ τὰ (-) γὰρ (For) πάντα (all things are) δι’ (for the sake of) ὑμᾶς (you), ἵνα (so that) ἡ (the) χάρις (grace) πλεονάσασα (having abounded) διὰ (through) τῶν (-) πλειόνων (more and more) τὴν (the) εὐχαριστίαν (thanksgiving) περισσεύσῃ (may increase) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God). ¹⁶ Διὸ (Therefore) οὐκ (not) ἐγκακοῦμεν (we lose heart); ἀλλ’ (but) εἰ (if) καὶ (indeed) ὁ (the) ἔξω (outward) ἡμῶν (of us) ἄνθρωπος (man) διαφθείρεται (is being brought to decay), ἀλλ’ (yet) ὁ (the) ἔσω (inner) ἡμῶν (of us) ἀνακαινοῦται (is being renewed) ἡμέρᾳ (day) καὶ (and) ἡμέρᾳ (day). ¹⁷ τὸ (The) γὰρ (for) παραυτίκα (momentary) ἐλαφρὸν (lightness) τῆς (-) θλίψεως (affliction) ‹ἡμῶν› (of us), καθ’ (far) ὑπερβολὴν (surpassing) εἰς (to) ὑπερβολὴν (excessiveness) αἰώνιον (an eternal) βάρος (weight) δόξης (of glory) κατεργάζεται (is producing) ἡμῖν (for us), ¹⁸ μὴ (not) σκοπούντων (are looking at) ἡμῶν (we) τὰ (the things) βλεπόμενα (being seen), ἀλλὰ (but) τὰ (the things) μὴ (not) βλεπόμενα (being seen). τὰ (The things) γὰρ (for) βλεπόμενα (being seen are) πρόσκαιρα (temporary); τὰ (the things) δὲ (however) μὴ (not) βλεπόμενα (being seen) αἰώνια (are eternal).

⁵ ὁ (The One) δὲ (now) κατεργασάμενος (having prepared) ἡμᾶς (us) εἰς (for) αὐτὸ (very) τοῦτο (this) Θεός (is God), ὁ (-) δοὺς (having given) ἡμῖν (to us) τὸν (the) ἀρραβῶνα (pledge) τοῦ (of the) Πνεύματος (Spirit),

¹⁵ ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (now) ἥδιστα (most gladly) δαπανήσω (will spend), καὶ (and) ἐκδαπανηθήσομαι (will be utterly spent), ὑπὲρ (for) τῶν (the) ψυχῶν (souls) ὑμῶν (of you). εἰ (If) περισσοτέρως (more abundantly) ὑμᾶς (you) ἀγαπῶν* (loving), ἧσσον (less) ἀγαπῶμαι (I am loved)?

¹³ Διὸ (Therefore) αἰτοῦμαι (I implore you) μὴ (not) ἐνκακεῖν (to lose heart) ἐν (at) ταῖς (the) θλίψεσίν (tribulations) μου (of me) ὑπὲρ (for) ὑμῶν (you), ἥτις (which) ἐστὶν (is) δόξα (glory) ὑμῶν (of you).

¹⁹ οἶδα (I know) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) τοῦτό (this) μοι (for me) ἀποβήσεται (will turn out) εἰς (to) σωτηρίαν (deliverance) διὰ (through) τῆς (-) ὑμῶν (your) δεήσεως (prayer) καὶ (and) ἐπιχορηγίας (the provision) τοῦ (of the) Πνεύματος (Spirit) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ),

¹⁰ διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), πάντα (all things) ὑπομένω (I endure) διὰ (for the sake of) τοὺς (the) ἐκλεκτούς (elect), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (also) αὐτοὶ (they) σωτηρίας (the salvation) τύχωσιν (may obtain) τῆς (that is) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), μετὰ (with) δόξης (glory) αἰωνίου (eternal).

¹⁰ Οἱ (-) μὲν (Truly) γὰρ (indeed) πρὸς (for) ὀλίγας (a few) ἡμέρας (days), κατὰ (according to) τὸ (that) δοκοῦν (seeming good) αὐτοῖς (to them), ἐπαίδευον (they were disciplining us); ὁ (-) δὲ (but He) ἐπὶ (for) τὸ (our) συμφέρον (benefitting), εἰς (in order) τὸ (-) μεταλαβεῖν (to share) τῆς (of the) ἁγιότητος (holiness) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ¹¹ πᾶσα (All) δὲ* (now) παιδεία (discipline), πρὸς (for) μὲν (indeed) τὸ (those) παρὸν (being present), οὐ (not) δοκεῖ (seems) χαρᾶς (of joy) εἶναι (to be), ἀλλὰ (but) λύπης (of grief); ὕστερον (afterward) δὲ (however), καρπὸν (the fruit) εἰρηνικὸν (peaceable), τοῖς (to those) δι’ (by) αὐτῆς (it) γεγυμνασμένοις (having been trained), ἀποδίδωσιν (it yields) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness).

¹¹ Μακάριοί (Blessed) ἐστε (are you) ὅταν (when) ὀνειδίσωσιν (they shall insult) ὑμᾶς (you), καὶ (and) διώξωσιν (shall persecute you), καὶ (and) εἴπωσιν (shall say) πᾶν (all kinds of) πονηρὸν (evil) καθ’ (against) ὑμῶν (you), ψευδόμενοι (lying) ἕνεκεν (on account of) ἐμοῦ (Me). ¹² χαίρετε (Rejoice) καὶ (and) ἀγαλλιᾶσθε (exult), ὅτι (for) ὁ (the) μισθὸς (reward) ὑμῶν (of you) πολὺς (is great) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens); οὕτως (thus) γὰρ (for) ἐδίωξαν (they persecuted) τοὺς (the) προφήτας (prophets) τοὺς (-) πρὸ (before) ὑμῶν (you).

²⁸ Ὑμεῖς (You) δέ (now) ἐστε (are) οἱ (those) διαμεμενηκότες (having remained) μετ’ (with) ἐμοῦ (Me) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) πειρασμοῖς (trials) μου (of Me). ²⁹ κἀγὼ (And I) διατίθεμαι (appoint) ὑμῖν (to you), καθὼς (as) διέθετό (appointed) μοι (to Me) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father) μου (of Me), βασιλείαν (a kingdom), ³⁰ ἵνα (so that) ἔσθητε (you may eat) καὶ (and) πίνητε (may drink) ἐπὶ (at) τῆς (the) τραπέζης (table) μου (of Me) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) μου (of Me), καὶ (and) καθήσεσθε (may sit) ἐπὶ (on) θρόνων (thrones), τὰς (the) δώδεκα (twelve) φυλὰς (tribes) κρίνοντες (judging) τοῦ (of) Ἰσραήλ (Israel).

¹⁷ εἰ (If) δὲ (now) τέκνα (children), καὶ (also) κληρονόμοι (heirs), κληρονόμοι (heirs) μὲν (indeed) Θεοῦ (of God), συνκληρονόμοι (joint-heirs) δὲ (now) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), εἴπερ (if indeed) συμπάσχομεν (we suffer with Him), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (also) συνδοξασθῶμεν (we may be glorified together). ¹⁸ Λογίζομαι (I reckon) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) οὐκ (not) ἄξια (comparable) τὰ (the) παθήματα (sufferings) τοῦ (of the) νῦν (present) καιροῦ (time are) πρὸς (to) τὴν (the) μέλλουσαν (coming) δόξαν (glory) ἀποκαλυφθῆναι (to be revealed) εἰς (to) ἡμᾶς (us).

¹³ πειρασμὸς (Temptation) ὑμᾶς (you) οὐκ (not) εἴληφεν (has seized), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ἀνθρώπινος (what is common to man); πιστὸς (faithful) δὲ (now) ὁ (-) Θεός (is God), ὃς (who) οὐκ (not) ἐάσει (will allow) ὑμᾶς (you) πειρασθῆναι (to be tempted) ὑπὲρ (beyond) ὃ (what) δύνασθε (you are able), ἀλλὰ (but) ποιήσει (will provide), σὺν (with) τῷ (the) πειρασμῷ (temptation), καὶ (also) τὴν (the) ἔκβασιν (escape), τοῦ (-) δύνασθαι (to be able) ὑπενεγκεῖν (to endure it).

¹⁴ καθὼς (as) καὶ (also) ἐπέγνωτε (you have understood) ἡμᾶς (us) ἀπὸ (in) μέρους (part), ὅτι (so that) καύχημα (boasting) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐσμεν (we are), καθάπερ (even as) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you are) ἡμῶν (ours), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).

⁹ νῦν (Now) χαίρω (I rejoice), οὐχ (not) ὅτι (that) ἐλυπήθητε (you were grieved), ἀλλ’ (but) ὅτι (that) ἐλυπήθητε (you were grieved) εἰς (unto) μετάνοιαν (repentance); ἐλυπήθητε (you were grieved) γὰρ (for) κατὰ (according to) Θεόν (God), ἵνα (so that) ἐν (in) μηδενὶ (nothing) ζημιωθῆτε (you might suffer loss) ἐξ (through) ἡμῶν (us).

²⁰ φοβοῦμαι (I fear) γὰρ (for) μή (lest) πως (perhaps), ἐλθὼν (having come), οὐχ (not) οἵους (such as) θέλω (I wish) εὕρω (I may find) ὑμᾶς (you), κἀγὼ (and I) εὑρεθῶ (might be found) ὑμῖν (by you) οἷον (such as) οὐ (not) θέλετε (you do wish); μή (lest) πως (perhaps) ἔρις (quarreling), ζῆλος (jealousy), θυμοί (anger), ἐριθεῖαι (contentions), καταλαλιαί (slander), ψιθυρισμοί (gossip), φυσιώσεις (conceit), ἀκαταστασίαι (disorder);

⁶ πεποιθὼς (being persuaded of) αὐτὸ (the very thing) τοῦτο (this), ὅτι (that) ὁ (the One) ἐναρξάμενος (having begun) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) ἔργον (a work) ἀγαθὸν (good) ἐπιτελέσει (will complete it) ἄχρι (until) ἡμέρας (the day) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus). ⁷ Καθώς (Accordingly), ἐστιν (it is) δίκαιον (right) ἐμοὶ (for me) τοῦτο (this) φρονεῖν (to feel) ὑπὲρ (about) πάντων (all) ὑμῶν (of you), διὰ (since) τὸ (-) ἔχειν (have) με (I) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) ὑμᾶς (you); ἔν (in) τε (both) τοῖς (the) δεσμοῖς (chains) μου (of me), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀπολογίᾳ (defense) καὶ (and) βεβαιώσει (confirmation) τοῦ (of the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel), συνκοινωνούς (fellow partakers) μου (with me) τῆς (of) χάριτος (grace) πάντας (all) ὑμᾶς (you) ὄντας (are).

⁴ ὥστε (so as for) αὐτοὺς (ourselves), ἡμᾶς (us) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) ἐνκαυχᾶσθαι (to boast), ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἐκκλησίαις (churches) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ὑπὲρ (about) τῆς (the) ὑπομονῆς (perseverance) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and) πίστεως (faith) ἐν (in) πᾶσιν (all) τοῖς (the) διωγμοῖς (persecutions) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and) ταῖς (in the) θλίψεσιν (tribulations) αἷς (that) ἀνέχεσθε (you are bearing). ⁵ Ἔνδειγμα (This is a plain token) τῆς (of the) δικαίας (righteous) κρίσεως (judgment) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), εἰς (unto) τὸ (-) καταξιωθῆναι (to be accounted worthy) ὑμᾶς (you) τῆς (of the) βασιλείας (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ὑπὲρ (for) ἧς (which) καὶ (also) πάσχετε (you suffer). ⁶ εἴπερ (For indeed) δίκαιον (righteous it is) παρὰ (with) Θεῷ (God) ἀνταποδοῦναι (to repay) τοῖς (those) θλίβουσιν (oppressing) ὑμᾶς (you) θλῖψιν (with affliction), ⁷ καὶ (and) ὑμῖν (to you) τοῖς (-) θλιβομένοις (being oppressed), ἄνεσιν (repose) μεθ’ (with) ἡμῶν (us) ἐν (at) τῇ (the) ἀποκαλύψει (revelation) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) ἀπ’ (from) οὐρανοῦ (heaven), μετ’ (with) ἀγγέλων (the angels) δυνάμεως (mighty) αὐτοῦ (of Him)

¹² εἰ (if) ὑπομένομεν (we endure), καὶ (also) συμβασιλεύσομεν* (we will reign together with Him); εἰ (if) ἀρνησόμεθα (we will deny Him), κἀκεῖνος (He also) ἀρνήσεται (will deny) ἡμᾶς (us);

² Πᾶσαν (All) χαρὰν (joy) ἡγήσασθε (esteem it), ἀδελφοί (brothers) μου (of me), ὅταν (when) πειρασμοῖς (trials) περιπέσητε (you might fall into) ποικίλοις (various), ³ γινώσκοντες (knowing) ὅτι (that) τὸ (the) δοκίμιον (testing) ὑμῶν (of your) τῆς (-) πίστεως (faith) κατεργάζεται (produces) ὑπομονήν (endurance). ⁴ ἡ (-) δὲ (And) ὑπομονὴ (endurance), ἔργον (work) τέλειον (its perfect) ἐχέτω (let have), ἵνα (so that) ἦτε (you may be) τέλειοι (perfect) καὶ (and) ὁλόκληροι (complete), ἐν (in) μηδενὶ (nothing) λειπόμενοι (lacking).

²³ Ἐγένετο (Arose) δὲ (now) κατὰ (at) τὸν (the) καιρὸν (time) ἐκεῖνον (same) τάραχος (a disturbance) οὐκ (not) ὀλίγος (small) περὶ (concerning) τῆς (the) Ὁδοῦ (Way). ²⁴ Δημήτριος (Demetrius) γάρ (for) τις (a certain man) ὀνόματι (named), ἀργυροκόπος (a silversmith), ποιῶν (making) ναοὺς (shrines) ἀργυροῦς (silver) Ἀρτέμιδος (of Artemis), παρείχετο (was bringing) τοῖς (to the) τεχνίταις (craftsmen) οὐκ (no) ὀλίγην (little) ἐργασίαν (business), ²⁵ οὓς (whom) συναθροίσας (having brought together), καὶ (also) τοὺς (the) περὶ (in) τὰ (such) τοιαῦτα (things) ἐργάτας (workmen), εἶπεν (he said), “Ἄνδρες (Men), ἐπίστασθε (you know) ὅτι (that) ἐκ (from) ταύτης (this) τῆς (-) ἐργασίας (business) ἡ (the) εὐπορία (wealth) ἡμῖν (of us) ἐστιν (is). ²⁶ καὶ (And) θεωρεῖτε (you see) καὶ (and) ἀκούετε (hear) ὅτι (that) οὐ (not) μόνον (only) Ἐφέσου (in Ephesus), ἀλλὰ (but) σχεδὸν (almost) πάσης (all) τῆς (-) Ἀσίας (of Asia), ὁ (-) Παῦλος (Paul), οὗτος (this) πείσας (having persuaded them), μετέστησεν (has turned away) ἱκανὸν (a great many) ὄχλον (people), λέγων (saying) ὅτι (that) οὐκ (not) εἰσὶν (they are) θεοὶ (gods) οἱ (-) διὰ (by) χειρῶν (hands) γινόμενοι (being made). ²⁷ οὐ (Not) μόνον (only) δὲ (but) τοῦτο (this) κινδυνεύει (is endangered) ἡμῖν (to us), τὸ (the) μέρος (business) εἰς (into) ἀπελεγμὸν (disrepute) ἐλθεῖν (to come), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) τὸ (the) τῆς (of the) μεγάλης (great) θεᾶς (goddess) Ἀρτέμιδος (Artemis) ἱερὸν (temple) εἰς (for) οὐθὲν (nothing) λογισθῆναι (to be reckoned), μέλλειν (to be) τε (and) καὶ (also) καθαιρεῖσθαι (deposed) τῆς (the) μεγαλειότητος (majesty) αὐτῆς (of her), ἣν (whom) ὅλη (all) ἡ (-) Ἀσία (Asia) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) οἰκουμένη (world) σέβεται (worship).” ²⁸ Ἀκούσαντες (Having heard) δὲ (then) καὶ (and) γενόμενοι (having become) πλήρεις (full) θυμοῦ (of rage), ἔκραζον (they were crying out), λέγοντες (saying), “Μεγάλη (Great is) ἡ (-) Ἄρτεμις (Artemis) Ἐφεσίων (of the Ephesians).” ²⁹ καὶ (And) ἐπλήσθη (was filled) ἡ (the) πόλις (city) τῆς (whole) συγχύσεως (with confusion); ὥρμησάν (they rushed) τε (and) ὁμοθυμαδὸν (with one accord) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) θέατρον (theatre), συναρπάσαντες (having dragged off) Γάϊον (Gaius) καὶ (and) Ἀρίσταρχον (Aristarchus), Μακεδόνας (Macedonians), συνεκδήμους (fellow travelers) Παύλου (of Paul). ³⁰ Παύλου (Of Paul) δὲ (however) βουλομένου (intending) εἰσελθεῖν (to go in) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) δῆμον (people), οὐκ (not) εἴων (would allow) αὐτὸν (him) οἱ (the) μαθηταί (disciples). ³¹ τινὲς (Some) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) τῶν (of the) Ἀσιαρχῶν (Asiarchs), ὄντες (being) αὐτῷ (to him) φίλοι (friends), πέμψαντες (having sent) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (him), παρεκάλουν (were urging him) μὴ (not) δοῦναι (to venture) ἑαυτὸν (himself) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) θέατρον (theatre). ³² Ἄλλοι (Others) μὲν (indeed) οὖν (therefore) ἄλλο (some) τι (thing) ἔκραζον (were crying out); ἦν (was) γὰρ (for) ἡ (the) ἐκκλησία (assembly) συγκεχυμένη (confused), καὶ (and) οἱ (-) πλείους (most) οὐκ (not) ᾔδεισαν (did know) τίνος (for what) ἕνεκα (cause) συνεληλύθεισαν (they were assembled). ³³ ἐκ (Out of) δὲ (now) τοῦ (the) ὄχλου (crowd) συνεβίβασαν (to explain himself) Ἀλέξανδρον (Alexander), προβαλόντων (having thrust forward) αὐτὸν (him) τῶν (the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews). ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἀλέξανδρος (Alexander), κατασείσας (having motioned with) τὴν (the) χεῖρα (hand), ἤθελεν (was wanting) ἀπολογεῖσθαι (to make a defense) τῷ (to the) δήμῳ (people). ³⁴ ἐπιγνόντες (Having recognized) δὲ (however) ὅτι (that) Ἰουδαῖός (a Jew) ἐστιν (he is), φωνὴ (a cry) ἐγένετο (there was) μία (one) ἐκ (from) πάντων (all), ὡς (about) ἐπὶ (ongoing) ὥρας (hours) δύο (two) κραζόντων* (crying out), “Μεγάλη (Great is) ἡ (-) Ἄρτεμις (Artemis) Ἐφεσίων (of the Ephesians).” ³⁵ Καταστείλας (Having calmed) δὲ (then) ὁ (the) γραμματεὺς (town clerk) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (crowd), φησίν (he says), “Ἄνδρες (Men), Ἐφέσιοι (Ephesians), τίς (what) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is there) ἀνθρώπων (man) ὃς (who) οὐ (not) γινώσκει (knows) τὴν (the) Ἐφεσίων (of the Ephesians) πόλιν (city) νεωκόρον (temple-keeper) οὖσαν (as being) τῆς (of the) μεγάλης (great) Ἀρτέμιδος (Artemis), καὶ (and) τοῦ (of that) διοπετοῦς (fallen from the sky)?

⁸ ἤδη (Already) κεκορεσμένοι (satiated) ἐστέ (you are); ἤδη (already) ἐπλουτήσατε (you have been enriched); χωρὶς (apart from) ἡμῶν (us) ἐβασιλεύσατε (you reigned), καὶ (and) ὄφελόν (I wish that) γε (really) ἐβασιλεύσατε (you did reign), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we) ὑμῖν (you) συμβασιλεύσωμεν* (might reign with).

³² εἰ (If) κατὰ (according to) ἄνθρωπον (man), ἐθηριομάχησα (I fought wild beasts) ἐν (in) Ἐφέσῳ (Ephesus), τί (what) μοι (to me) τὸ (the) ὄφελος (profit)? εἰ (If) νεκροὶ (the dead) οὐκ (not) ἐγείρονται (are raised), “Φάγωμεν (Let us eat) καὶ (and) πίωμεν (let us drink), αὔριον (tomorrow) γὰρ (for) ἀποθνήσκομεν (we die).”

⁹ θύρα (A door) γάρ (for) μοι (to me) ἀνέῳγεν (has opened) μεγάλη (great) καὶ (and) ἐνεργής (productive), καὶ (and) ἀντικείμενοι (are opposing) πολλοί (many).

⁷ Ἔχομεν (We have) δὲ (now) τὸν (the) θησαυρὸν (treasure) τοῦτον (this) ἐν (in) ὀστρακίνοις (earthen) σκεύεσιν (vessels), ἵνα (that) ἡ (the) ὑπερβολὴ (surpassingness) τῆς (of the) δυνάμεως (power) ᾖ (may be) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (from God), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ἐξ (from) ἡμῶν (us), ⁸ ἐν (in) παντὶ (every way) θλιβόμενοι (being hard pressed), ἀλλ’ (but) οὐ (not) στενοχωρούμενοι (being crushed); ἀπορούμενοι (being perplexed), ἀλλ’ (but) οὐκ (not) ἐξαπορούμενοι (despairing); ⁹ διωκόμενοι (being persecuted), ἀλλ’ (but) οὐκ (not) ἐγκαταλειπόμενοι (being forsaken); καταβαλλόμενοι (being struck down), ἀλλ’ (but) οὐκ (not) ἀπολλύμενοι (being destroyed); ¹⁰ πάντοτε (always) τὴν (the) νέκρωσιν (death) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) ἐν (in) τῷ (our) σώματι (body) περιφέροντες (carrying around), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (also) ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) σώματι (body) ἡμῶν (of us) φανερωθῇ (should be manifested); ¹¹ ἀεὶ (always) γὰρ (for) ἡμεῖς (we) οἱ (the) ζῶντες (living) εἰς (to) θάνατον (death) παραδιδόμεθα (are being delivered) διὰ (on account of) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (also) ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) φανερωθῇ (may be manifested) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) θνητῇ (mortal) σαρκὶ (flesh) ἡμῶν (of us). ¹² ὥστε (So then), ὁ (-) θάνατος (death) ἐν (in) ἡμῖν (us) ἐνεργεῖται (works), ἡ (-) δὲ (but) ζωὴ (life) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you).

¹⁷ καθὼς (as) γέγραπται (it has been written) ὅτι (-): “Πατέρα (A father) πολλῶν (of many) ἐθνῶν (nations) τέθεικά (I have made) σε (you).” — κατέναντι (before) οὗ (whom) ἐπίστευσεν (he believed) Θεοῦ (God), τοῦ (the One) ζωοποιοῦντος (giving life) τοὺς (to the) νεκροὺς (dead) καὶ (and) καλοῦντος (calling) τὰ (the things) μὴ (not) ὄντα (into being) ὡς (even) ὄντα (existing), ¹⁸ ὃς (who) παρ’ (against) ἐλπίδα (hope), ἐπ’ (in) ἐλπίδι (hope) ἐπίστευσεν (believed), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) γενέσθαι (to become) αὐτὸν (him) πατέρα (the father) πολλῶν (of many) ἐθνῶν (nations), κατὰ (according to) τὸ (that) εἰρημένον (having been spoken), “Οὕτως (So) ἔσται (shall be) τὸ (the) σπέρμα (offspring) σου (of you).” ¹⁹ καὶ (And) μὴ (not) ἀσθενήσας (having become weak) τῇ (in the) πίστει (faith), κατενόησεν (he considered) τὸ (-) ἑαυτοῦ (of himself) σῶμα (the body) [ἤδη] (already) νενεκρωμένον (having become dead), ἑκατονταετής (a hundred years old) που (about) ὑπάρχων (being), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) νέκρωσιν (lifelessness) τῆς (of the) μήτρας (womb) Σάρρας (of Sarah). ²⁰ εἰς (At) δὲ (however) τὴν (the) ἐπαγγελίαν (promise) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), οὐ (not) διεκρίθη (he did waver) τῇ (-) ἀπιστίᾳ (through unbelief), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐνεδυναμώθη (was strengthened) τῇ (-) πίστει (in faith), δοὺς (having given) δόξαν (glory) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), ²¹ καὶ (and) πληροφορηθεὶς (having been fully assured) ὅτι (that) ὃ (what) ἐπήγγελται (He had promised), δυνατός (able) ἐστιν (He is) καὶ (also) ποιῆσαι (to do). ²² διὸ (Therefore) καὶ (also) “Ἐλογίσθη (it was credited) αὐτῷ (to him) εἰς (unto) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness).” ²³ Οὐκ (Not) ἐγράφη (it was written) δὲ (now) δι’ (on account of) αὐτὸν (him) μόνον (alone) ὅτι (that) “Ἐλογίσθη (it was credited) αὐτῷ (to him),” ²⁴ ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) δι’ (on account of) ἡμᾶς (us), οἷς (to whom) μέλλει (it is about) λογίζεσθαι (to be credited), τοῖς (to those) πιστεύουσιν (believing) ἐπὶ (on) τὸν (the One) ἐγείραντα (having raised) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead), ²⁵ ὃς (who) παρεδόθη (was delivered over) διὰ (for) τὰ (the) παραπτώματα (trespasses) ἡμῶν (of us), καὶ (and) ἠγέρθη (was raised) διὰ (for) τὴν (the) δικαίωσιν (justification) ἡμῶν (of us).

⁵ οὐχ (Not) ὅτι (that) ἀφ’ (from) ἑαυτῶν (ourselves) ἱκανοί (sufficient) ἐσμεν (we are) λογίσασθαί (to reckon) τι (anything) ὡς (as) ἐξ (of) ἑαυτῶν (ourselves), ἀλλ’ (but) ἡ (the) ἱκανότης (sufficiency) ἡμῶν (of us) ἐκ (is of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God),

⁷ καὶ (and) τῇ (the) ὑπερβολῇ (surpassingness) τῶν (of the) ἀποκαλύψεων (revelations). Διὸ (Therefore) ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) ὑπεραίρωμαι (I should become conceited), ἐδόθη (was given) μοι (to me) σκόλοψ (a thorn) τῇ (in my) σαρκί (flesh), ἄγγελος (a messenger) Σατανᾶ (of Satan), ἵνα (that) με (me) κολαφίζῃ (he might buffet), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) ὑπεραίρωμαι (I should become conceited). ⁸ ὑπὲρ (For) τούτου (this), τρὶς (three times) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) παρεκάλεσα (I begged), ἵνα (that) ἀποστῇ (it might depart) ἀπ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (me). ⁹ καὶ (And) εἴρηκέν (He said) μοι (to me), “Ἀρκεῖ (Suffices) σοι (you) ἡ (the) χάρις (grace) μου (of Me); ἡ (the) γὰρ (for) δύναμις (power) ἐν (in) ἀσθενείᾳ (weakness) τελεῖται (is perfected).” Ἥδιστα (Most gladly) οὖν (therefore) μᾶλλον (rather) καυχήσομαι (will I boast) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἀσθενείαις (weaknesses) ‹μου› (of me), ἵνα (so that) ἐπισκηνώσῃ (may rest) ἐπ’ (upon) ἐμὲ (me) ἡ (the) δύναμις (power) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ). ¹⁰ διὸ (Therefore) εὐδοκῶ (I take pleasure) ἐν (in) ἀσθενείαις (weaknesses), ἐν (in) ὕβρεσιν (insults), ἐν (in) ἀνάγκαις (hardships), ἐν (in) διωγμοῖς (persecutions), καὶ (and) στενοχωρίαις (difficulties) ὑπὲρ (for) Χριστοῦ (Christ); ὅταν (when) γὰρ (for) ἀσθενῶ (I might be weak), τότε (then) δυνατός (strong) εἰμι (I am).

¹⁹ λογισάμενος (having reasoned) ὅτι (that) καὶ (even) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead) ἐγείρειν (to raise), δυνατὸς (able was) ὁ (-) Θεός (God), ὅθεν (from where) αὐτὸν (him) καὶ (also) ἐν (in) παραβολῇ (a simile), ἐκομίσατο (he received).

²¹ ἕνεκα (On account of) τούτων (these things), με (me) Ἰουδαῖοι (the Jews) συλλαβόμενοι (having seized) [ὄντα] (being) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἱερῷ (temple), ἐπειρῶντο (they were attempting) διαχειρίσασθαι (to kill).

³¹ ἵνα (so that) ῥυσθῶ (I may be delivered) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (those) ἀπειθούντων (refusing to be persuaded) ἐν (in) τῇ (-) Ἰουδαίᾳ (Judea), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) διακονία (service) μου (of me), ἡ (which is) εἰς (in) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem), εὐπρόσδεκτος (acceptable) τοῖς (to the) ἁγίοις (saints) γένηται (may be),

¹⁰ Εἰς (For) τοῦτο (this) γὰρ (for) κοπιῶμεν (we toil) καὶ (and) ἀγωνιζόμεθα (strive), ὅτι (because) ἠλπίκαμεν (we have hope) ἐπὶ (on) Θεῷ (God) ζῶντι (the living), ὅς (who) ἐστιν (is) Σωτὴρ (the Savior) πάντων (of all) ἀνθρώπων (men), μάλιστα (especially) πιστῶν (of believers).

¹⁷ ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Κύριός (the Lord) μοι (me) παρέστη (stood by) καὶ (and) ἐνεδυνάμωσέν (strengthened) με (me), ἵνα (so that) δι’ (through) ἐμοῦ (me) τὸ (the) κήρυγμα (proclamation) πληροφορηθῇ (would be fully accomplished), καὶ (and) ἀκούσωσιν (should hear) πάντα (all) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles). καὶ (And) ἐρρύσθην (I was delivered) ἐκ (out of) στόματος (the mouth) λέοντος (of the lion).

⁹ οἶδεν (then knows) Κύριος (the Lord) εὐσεβεῖς (the devout) ἐκ (out of) πειρασμοῦ (temptation) ῥύεσθαι (to deliver); ἀδίκους (the unrighteous) δὲ (then) εἰς (unto) ἡμέραν (the day) κρίσεως (of judgment) κολαζομένους (being punished) τηρεῖν (to keep);

¹⁵ τὰ (-) γὰρ (For) πάντα (all things are) δι’ (for the sake of) ὑμᾶς (you), ἵνα (so that) ἡ (the) χάρις (grace) πλεονάσασα (having abounded) διὰ (through) τῶν (-) πλειόνων (more and more) τὴν (the) εὐχαριστίαν (thanksgiving) περισσεύσῃ (may increase) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

¹¹ ἐν (in) παντὶ (every way) πλουτιζόμενοι (enriching you) εἰς (to) πᾶσαν (all) ἁπλότητα (generosity), ἥτις (which) κατεργάζεται (produces), δι’ (through) ἡμῶν (us), εὐχαριστίαν (thanksgiving) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God). ¹² ὅτι (For) ἡ (the) διακονία (ministry) τῆς (of the) λειτουργίας (service) ταύτης (this) οὐ (not) μόνον (only) ἐστὶν (is) προσαναπληροῦσα (completely filling up) τὰ (the) ὑστερήματα (needs) τῶν (of the) ἁγίων (saints), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) περισσεύουσα (is overflowing) διὰ (through) πολλῶν (many) εὐχαριστιῶν (thanksgivings) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God),

¹⁴ καὶ (and) αὐτῶν (their) δεήσει (supplication) ὑπὲρ (is for) ὑμῶν (you), ἐπιποθούντων (a longing) ὑμᾶς (for you) διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) ὑπερβάλλουσαν (surpassing) χάριν (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐφ’ (upon) ὑμῖν (you).

¹⁸ διὰ (through) πάσης (all) προσευχῆς (prayer) καὶ (and) δεήσεως (supplication), προσευχόμενοι (praying) ἐν (in) παντὶ (every) καιρῷ (season) ἐν (in) Πνεύματι (the Spirit), καὶ (and) εἰς (unto) αὐτὸ (this very thing), ἀγρυπνοῦντες (watching) ἐν (with) πάσῃ (all) προσκαρτερήσει (perseverance) καὶ (and) δεήσει (supplication) περὶ (for) πάντων (all) τῶν (-) ἁγίων (saints), ¹⁹ καὶ (and also) ὑπὲρ (for) ἐμοῦ (me), ἵνα (that) μοι (to me) δοθῇ (may be given) λόγος (divine utterance) ἐν (in) ἀνοίξει (the opening) τοῦ (of the) στόματός (mouth) μου (of me), ἐν (with) παρρησίᾳ (boldness) γνωρίσαι (to make known) τὸ (the) μυστήριον (mystery) τοῦ (of the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel),

¹⁶ Ἐξομολογεῖσθε (Confess) οὖν (therefore) ἀλλήλοις (to one another) τὰς (the) ἁμαρτίας (sins), καὶ (and) εὔχεσθε* (pray) ὑπὲρ (for) ἀλλήλων (one another), ὅπως (so that) ἰαθῆτε (you may be healed). πολὺ (Much) ἰσχύει (prevails) δέησις (the prayer) δικαίου (of a righteous man) ἐνεργουμένη (being made effective). ¹⁷ Ἠλίας (Elijah) ἄνθρωπος (a man) ἦν (was) ὁμοιοπαθὴς (of like nature) ἡμῖν (to us), καὶ (and) προσευχῇ (with fervent prayer) προσηύξατο (he prayed for it) τοῦ (-) μὴ (not) βρέξαι (to rain), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἔβρεξεν (it did rain) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth) ἐνιαυτοὺς (years) τρεῖς (three) καὶ (and) μῆνας (months) ἕξ (six). ¹⁸ καὶ (And) πάλιν (again) προσηύξατο (he prayed), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) οὐρανὸς (heaven) ὑετὸν (rain) ἔδωκεν (gave), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) γῆ (earth) ἐβλάστησεν (produced) τὸν (the) καρπὸν (fruit) αὐτῆς (of it).

⁴ καὶ (And) ὁ (the) λόγος (message) μου (of me) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) κήρυγμά (preaching) μου (of me) οὐκ (were not) ἐν (in) πειθοῖς (persuasive) σοφίας (of wisdom) λόγοις (words), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐν (in) ἀποδείξει (demonstration) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit) καὶ (and) δυνάμεως (of power), ⁵ ἵνα (so that) ἡ (the) πίστις (faith) ὑμῶν (of you) μὴ (not) ᾖ (might be) ἐν (in) σοφίᾳ (wisdom) ἀνθρώπων (of men), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐν (in) δυνάμει (power) Θεοῦ (of God).

¹³ ἃ (which) καὶ (also) λαλοῦμεν (we speak), οὐκ (not) ἐν (in) διδακτοῖς (taught) ἀνθρωπίνης (of human) σοφίας (wisdom) λόγοις (words), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐν (in those) διδακτοῖς (taught) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit), πνευματικοῖς (by spiritual means) πνευματικὰ (spiritual things) συνκρίνοντες (communicating).

⁴ οὐδὲν (Nothing) γὰρ (for) ἐμαυτῷ (against myself) σύνοιδα (I am conscious of), ἀλλ’ (yet) οὐκ (not) ἐν (by) τούτῳ (this) δεδικαίωμαι (have I been justified); ὁ (the One) δὲ (however) ἀνακρίνων (judging) με (me) Κύριός (the Lord) ἐστιν (is).

⁸ ὥστε (so that) ἑορτάζωμεν (we might celebrate the feast), μὴ (not) ἐν (with) ζύμῃ (leaven) παλαιᾷ (old), μηδὲ (not) ἐν (with) ζύμῃ (leaven) κακίας (of malice) καὶ (and) πονηρίας (wickedness), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐν (with) ἀζύμοις (unleavened bread) εἰλικρινείας (of sincerity) καὶ (and) ἀληθείας (of truth).

¹⁰ χάριτι (By the grace) δὲ (however) Θεοῦ (of God), εἰμι (I am) ὅ (what) εἰμι (I am), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) χάρις (grace) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἡ (-) εἰς (toward) ἐμὲ (me) οὐ (not) κενὴ (void) ἐγενήθη (has been). ἀλλὰ (Rather), περισσότερον (more abundantly) αὐτῶν (than them) πάντων (all) ἐκοπίασα (I toiled), οὐκ (not) ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however), ἀλλὰ (but) ἡ (the) χάρις (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ‹ἡ› (that was) σὺν (with) ἐμοί (me).

¹⁷ Τοῦτο (Thus) οὖν (therefore) βουλόμενος (purposing), μήτι (not) ἄρα (then) τῇ (-) ἐλαφρίᾳ (lightness) ἐχρησάμην (did I use)? ἢ (Or) ἃ (what) βουλεύομαι (I purpose), κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (flesh) βουλεύομαι (do I purpose), ἵνα (so that) ᾖ (there should be) παρ’ (with) ἐμοὶ (me) τό (-) “Ναί (Yes), ναὶ (yes),” καὶ (and) τὸ (-) “Οὔ (No), οὔ (no)?”?

¹³ Τίς (Who) σοφὸς (is wise) καὶ (and) ἐπιστήμων (understanding) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you); δειξάτω (let him show) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) καλῆς (good) ἀναστροφῆς (conduct) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἐν (in) πραΰτητι (the humility) σοφίας (of wisdom). ¹⁴ εἰ (If) δὲ (however) ζῆλον (jealousy) πικρὸν (bitter) ἔχετε (you have), καὶ (and) ἐριθείαν (self-interest) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) ὑμῶν (of you), μὴ (not) κατακαυχᾶσθε (boast of it) καὶ (and) ψεύδεσθε (lie) κατὰ (against) τῆς (the) ἀληθείας (truth). ¹⁵ οὐκ (Not) ἔστιν (is) αὕτη (this) ἡ (the) σοφία (wisdom) ἄνωθεν (from above) κατερχομένη (coming down), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐπίγειος (is earthly), ψυχική (unspiritual), δαιμονιώδης (demonic). ¹⁶ ὅπου (Where) γὰρ (for) ζῆλος (jealousy) καὶ (and) ἐριθεία (self-interest exist), ἐκεῖ (there will be) ἀκαταστασία (disorder) καὶ (and) πᾶν (every) φαῦλον (evil) πρᾶγμα (thing). ¹⁷ Ἡ (-) δὲ (But) ἄνωθεν (the from above) σοφία (wisdom) πρῶτον (first) μὲν (indeed) ἁγνή (pure) ἐστιν (is), ἔπειτα (then) εἰρηνική (peaceable), ἐπιεικής (gentle), εὐπειθής (reasonable), μεστὴ (full) ἐλέους (of mercy) καὶ (and) καρπῶν (of fruits) ἀγαθῶν (good), ἀδιάκριτος (impartial), ἀνυπόκριτος (sincere). ¹⁸ καρπὸς (The fruit) δὲ (now) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness) ἐν (in) εἰρήνῃ (peace) σπείρεται (is sown) τοῖς (by those) ποιοῦσιν (making) εἰρήνην (peace).

⁶ μείζονα (Greater) δὲ (however) δίδωσιν (He gives) χάριν (grace). διὸ (Therefore) λέγει (it says): “Ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ὑπερηφάνοις (the proud) ἀντιτάσσεται (opposes), ταπεινοῖς (to the humble) δὲ (however) δίδωσιν (gives) χάριν (grace).”

¹⁹ [καὶ] (And) ἐν (by) τούτῳ (this) γνωσόμεθα (we will know) ὅτι (that) ἐκ (of) τῆς (the) ἀληθείας (truth) ἐσμέν (we are), καὶ (and) ἔμπροσθεν (before) αὐτοῦ (Him) πείσομεν (we will assure) τὴν (the) καρδίαν (heart) ἡμῶν (of us), ²⁰ ὅτι (that) ἐὰν (if) καταγινώσκῃ (should condemn us) ἡμῶν (our) ἡ (-) καρδία (heart), ὅτι (that) μείζων (greater than) ἐστὶν (is) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τῆς (the) καρδίας (heart) ἡμῶν (of us), καὶ (and) γινώσκει (He knows) πάντα (all things). ²¹ Ἀγαπητοί (Beloved), ἐὰν (if) ἡ (the) καρδία (heart) ‹ἡμῶν› (of us) «μὴ (not) καταγινώσκῃ» (should condemn us), παρρησίαν (confidence) ἔχομεν (we have) πρὸς (toward) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), ²² καὶ (and) ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) αἰτῶμεν (we might ask), λαμβάνομεν (we receive) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (Him), ὅτι (because) τὰς (the) ἐντολὰς (commandments) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τηροῦμεν (we keep), καὶ (and) τὰ (the things) ἀρεστὰ (pleasing) ἐνώπιον (before) αὐτοῦ (Him) ποιοῦμεν (we do).

¹¹ Εἰδότες (Knowing) οὖν (therefore) τὸν (the) φόβον (fear) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord), ἀνθρώπους (men) πείθομεν (we persuade) Θεῷ (to God) δὲ (and) πεφανερώμεθα (we have been made manifest); ἐλπίζω (I hope) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) συνειδήσεσιν (consciences) ὑμῶν (of you) πεφανερῶσθαι (to have been made manifest).

⁶ ἐλπίζω (I hope) δὲ (now) ὅτι (that) γνώσεσθε (you will know) ὅτι (that) ἡμεῖς (we) οὐκ (not) ἐσμὲν (are) ἀδόκιμοι (unapproved).

⁶ ὅπως (so that) ἡ (the) κοινωνία (fellowship) τῆς (of the) πίστεώς (faith) σου (of you), ἐνεργὴς (effective) γένηται (might become) ἐν (in) ἐπιγνώσει (the acknowledgment) παντὸς (of every) ἀγαθοῦ (good thing) τοῦ (that is) ἐν (in) ἡμῖν (us), εἰς (in) Χριστόν (Christ).

²⁵ Οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) θέλω (I want) ὑμᾶς (you) ἀγνοεῖν (to be ignorant), ἀδελφοί (brothers), τὸ (of the) μυστήριον (mystery) τοῦτο (this), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) ἦτε (you may be) ἐν (in) ἑαυτοῖς (yourselves) φρόνιμοι (wise), ὅτι (that) πώρωσις (a hardening) ἀπὸ (in) μέρους (part) τῷ (-) Ἰσραὴλ (to Israel) γέγονεν (has happened), ἄχρι (until) οὗ (that) τὸ (the) πλήρωμα (fullness) τῶν (of the) ἐθνῶν (Gentiles) εἰσέλθῃ (may come in);

⁸ ὃς (who) καὶ (also) βεβαιώσει (will sustain) ὑμᾶς (you) ἕως (to the) τέλους (end), ἀνεγκλήτους (blameless) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ).

¹⁸ πρῶτον (First) μὲν (indeed), γὰρ (for) συνερχομένων (coming together) ὑμῶν (you) ἐν (in) ἐκκλησίᾳ (an assembly), ἀκούω (I hear) σχίσματα (divisions) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) ὑπάρχειν (there to be), καὶ (and) μέρος (in part) τι (it) πιστεύω (I believe).

³¹ καθ’ (Every) ἡμέραν (day) ἀποθνῄσκω (I die), νὴ (as surely as) τὴν (the) ὑμετέραν (in you) καύχησιν (boasting), ἀδελφοί (brothers) ἣν (which) ἔχω (I have) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) τῷ (the) Κυρίῳ (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us).

⁵ Εἰ (If) δέ (however) τις (anyone) λελύπηκεν (has caused grief), οὐκ (not) ἐμὲ (me) λελύπηκεν (has he grieved), ἀλλὰ (but) ἀπὸ (in) μέρους (part)— ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) ἐπιβαρῶ (I might put it too severely)— πάντας (all) ὑμᾶς (you).

¹² οὐ (Not) πάλιν (again) ἑαυτοὺς (ourselves) συνιστάνομεν (are we commending) ὑμῖν (to you), ἀλλὰ (but) ἀφορμὴν (occasion) διδόντες (are giving) ὑμῖν (to you) καυχήματος (of boasting) ὑπὲρ (on behalf of) ἡμῶν (us), ἵνα (so that) ἔχητε (you may have an answer) πρὸς (toward) τοὺς (those) ἐν (in) προσώπῳ (appearance) καυχωμένους (boasting), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ἐν (in) καρδίᾳ (the heart).

⁶ πεποιθὼς (being persuaded of) αὐτὸ (the very thing) τοῦτο (this), ὅτι (that) ὁ (the One) ἐναρξάμενος (having begun) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) ἔργον (a work) ἀγαθὸν (good) ἐπιτελέσει (will complete it) ἄχρι (until) ἡμέρας (the day) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).

²⁶ ἵνα (so that) τὸ (the) καύχημα (boasting) ὑμῶν (of you) περισσεύῃ (may abound) ἐν (to) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (me) διὰ (through) τῆς (-) ἐμῆς (my) παρουσίας (coming) πάλιν (again) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you).

¹⁹ τίς (Who is) γὰρ (for) ἡμῶν (our) ἐλπὶς (hope), ἢ (or) χαρὰ (joy), ἢ (or) στέφανος (crown) καυχήσεως (of boasting)? ἢ (Or) οὐχὶ (are not) καὶ (even) ὑμεῖς (you), ἔμπροσθεν (before) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), ἐν (at) τῇ (-) αὐτοῦ (His) παρουσίᾳ (coming)? ²⁰ ὑμεῖς (You) γάρ (for) ἐστε (are) ἡ (the) δόξα (glory) ἡμῶν (of us), καὶ (and) ἡ (-) χαρά (joy).

¹¹ ἐπιποθῶ (I long) γὰρ (for) ἰδεῖν (to see) ὑμᾶς (you), ἵνα (that) τι (some) μεταδῶ (I may impart) χάρισμα (gift) ὑμῖν (to you) πνευματικὸν (spiritual), εἰς (to) τὸ (the) στηριχθῆναι (strengthening) ὑμᾶς (of you),

²⁹ οἶδα (I know) δὲ (now) ὅτι (that) ἐρχόμενος (coming) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you), ἐν (in) πληρώματι (the fullness) εὐλογίας (of the blessing) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) ἐλεύσομαι (I will come).

¹⁹ ἐλεύσομαι (I will come) δὲ (however) ταχέως (shortly) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you), ἐὰν (if) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) θελήσῃ (wills), καὶ (and) γνώσομαι (I will find out) οὐ (not) τὸν (the) λόγον (talk) τῶν (of those) πεφυσιωμένων (being puffed up), ἀλλὰ (but) τὴν (the) δύναμιν (power).

³⁴ εἴ (If) τις (anyone) πεινᾷ (is hungry), ἐν (at) οἴκῳ (home) ἐσθιέτω (let him eat), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) εἰς (for) κρίμα (judgment) συνέρχησθε (you might come together). Τὰ (-) δὲ (And) λοιπὰ (the other things), ὡς (as soon as) ἂν (-) ἔλθω (I might come), διατάξομαι (I will set in order).

¹ Συνεργοῦντες (Working together) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) παρακαλοῦμεν (we exhort) μὴ (not) εἰς (in) κενὸν (vain) τὴν (the) χάριν (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) δέξασθαι (to receive) ὑμᾶς (you).

²⁵ Καὶ (And) τοῦτο (this) πεποιθὼς (having been persuaded of), οἶδα (I know) ὅτι (that) μενῶ (I will remain) καὶ (and) παραμενῶ (will continue with) πᾶσιν (all) ὑμῖν (of you) εἰς (for) τὴν (-) ὑμῶν (your) προκοπὴν (progress) καὶ (and) χαρὰν (joy) τῆς (of the) πίστεως (faith), ²⁶ ἵνα (so that) τὸ (the) καύχημα (boasting) ὑμῶν (of you) περισσεύῃ (may abound) ἐν (to) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (me) διὰ (through) τῆς (-) ἐμῆς (my) παρουσίας (coming) πάλιν (again) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you).

⁵ Ἐλεύσομαι (I will come) δὲ (however) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you), ὅταν (when) Μακεδονίαν (Macedonia) διέλθω (I shall have gone through); Μακεδονίαν (Macedonia) γὰρ (for) διέρχομαι (I am going through). ⁶ πρὸς (With) ὑμᾶς (you) δὲ (then) τυχὸν (possibly) παραμενῶ* (I will stay), ἢ (or) καὶ (even) παραχειμάσω (I will winter), ἵνα (so that) ὑμεῖς (you) με (me) προπέμψητε (may equip), οὗ (wherever) ἐὰν (if) πορεύωμαι (I may go). ⁷ οὐ (Not) θέλω (I want) γὰρ (for) ὑμᾶς (you) ἄρτι (now) ἐν (in) παρόδῳ (passing) ἰδεῖν (to see); ἐλπίζω (I hope) γὰρ (indeed) χρόνον (a time) τινὰ (certain) ἐπιμεῖναι (to remain) πρὸς (with) ὑμᾶς (you), ἐὰν (if) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) ἐπιτρέψῃ (permits).

³⁷ ἔστω (Let it be) δὲ (however) ὁ (the) λόγος (statement) ὑμῶν (of you), ‘Ναὶ (Yes),’ ναί (‘Yes),’ οὒ (and ‘No),’ ‘Οὔ (No).’ τὸ (The) δὲ (however) περισσὸν (more than) τούτων (these), ἐκ (from) τοῦ (-) πονηροῦ (evil) ἐστιν (comes).

¹⁵ Ὑμεῖς (You) κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) σάρκα (flesh) κρίνετε (judge); ἐγὼ (I) οὐ (not) κρίνω (am judging) οὐδένα (no one).

²⁶ πολλὰ (Many things) ἔχω (I have) περὶ (concerning) ὑμῶν (you) λαλεῖν (to say), καὶ (and) κρίνειν (to judge); ἀλλ’ (but) ὁ (the One) πέμψας (having sent) με (Me) ἀληθής (true) ἐστιν (is); κἀγὼ (and I) ἃ (what) ἤκουσα (I have heard) παρ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (Him), ταῦτα (these things) λαλῶ (I say) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world).”

⁹ πιστὸς (Faithful is) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God), δι’ (by) οὗ (whom) ἐκλήθητε (you were called) εἰς (into) κοινωνίαν (fellowship) τοῦ (with the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him), Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us).

⁷ Καὶ (And) τῷ (to) ἀγγέλῳ (the messenger) τῆς (of the) ἐν (in) Φιλαδελφείᾳ (Philadelphia) ἐκκλησίας (church) γράψον (write): Τάδε (These things) λέγει (says) ὁ (the) ἅγιος (Holy One), ὁ (the) ἀληθινός (True One), ὁ (-) ἔχων (having) τὴν (the) κλεῖν (key) Δαυίδ (of David), ὁ (the One) ἀνοίγων (opening) καὶ (and) οὐδεὶς (no one) κλείσει (will shut), καὶ (and) κλείων (shutting) καὶ (and) οὐδεὶς (no one) ἀνοίγει (opens).

¹⁴ Καὶ (And) τῷ (to the) ἀγγέλῳ (messenger) τῆς (of the) ἐν (in) Λαοδικείᾳ (Laodicea) ἐκκλησίας (church) γράψον (write): Τάδε (These things) λέγει (says) ὁ (the) Ἀμήν (Amen), ὁ (the) μάρτυς (Witness) ὁ (-) πιστὸς (faithful) καὶ (and) ἀληθινός (true), ἡ (the) ἀρχὴ (Beginning) τῆς (of the) κτίσεως (creation) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

¹⁷ καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), φωνὴ (a voice) ἐκ (out) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens), λέγουσα (saying), “Οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Υἱός (Son) μου (of me), ὁ (the) ἀγαπητός (beloved), ἐν (in) ᾧ (whom) εὐδόκησα (I was well pleased).”

¹⁶ Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now), Σίμων (Simon) Πέτρος (Peter) εἶπεν (said), “Σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Χριστὸς (Christ), ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (of) Θεοῦ (God) τοῦ (the) ζῶντος (living).” ¹⁷ Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Μακάριος (Blessed) εἶ (are you), Σίμων (Simon) Βαριωνᾶ (Barjona)! ὅτι (For) σὰρξ (flesh) καὶ (and) αἷμα (blood) οὐκ (not) ἀπεκάλυψέν (revealed it) σοι (to you), ἀλλ’ (but) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father) μου (of Me), ὁ (who is) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens).

⁵ Ἔτι (While yet) αὐτοῦ (he) λαλοῦντος (was speaking), ἰδοὺ (behold), νεφέλη (a cloud) φωτεινὴ (bright) ἐπεσκίασεν (overshadowed) αὐτούς (them); καὶ (and) ἰδοὺ (behold), φωνὴ (a voice) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) νεφέλης (cloud), λέγουσα (saying), “Οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Υἱός (Son) μου (of Me), ὁ (the) ἀγαπητός (beloved), ἐν (in) ᾧ (whom) εὐδόκησα (I am well pleased). ἀκούετε (Listen) αὐτοῦ (to Him)!”

³⁵ ὁ (The) οὐρανὸς (heaven) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) γῆ (earth) παρελεύσεται (will pass away), οἱ (-) δὲ (but) λόγοι (the words) μου (of Me) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) παρέλθωσιν (shall pass away).

⁶³ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐσιώπα (was silent). Καὶ (And) ὁ (the) ἀρχιερεὺς (high priest) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ἐξορκίζω (I adjure) σε (you) κατὰ (by) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) τοῦ (the) ζῶντος (living), ἵνα (that) ἡμῖν (us) εἴπῃς (You tell) εἰ (if) σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Χριστὸς (Christ), ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).” ⁶⁴ Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Σὺ (You) εἶπας (have said). πλὴν (But) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἀπ’ (from) ἄρτι (now) ὄψεσθε (you will see) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) καθήμενον (sitting) ἐκ (at) δεξιῶν (the right hand) τῆς (-) δυνάμεως (of Power) καὶ (and) ἐρχόμενον (coming) ἐπὶ (upon) τῶν (the) νεφελῶν (clouds) τοῦ (-) οὐρανοῦ (of heaven).”

⁴⁰ καὶ (and) λέγοντες (saying), “Ὁ (The One) καταλύων (destroying) τὸν (the) ναὸν (temple) καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τρισὶν (three) ἡμέραις (days) οἰκοδομῶν (building it), σῶσον (save) σεαυτόν (Yourself)! εἰ (If) Υἱὸς (the Son) εἶ (You are) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), καὶ (also) κατάβηθι (descend) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) σταυροῦ (cross)!”

⁵⁴ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἑκατόνταρχος (the centurion) καὶ (and) οἱ (those) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (him) τηροῦντες (keeping guard over) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), ἰδόντες (having seen) τὸν (the) σεισμὸν (earthquake) καὶ (and) τὰ (the things) γενόμενα* (taking place), ἐφοβήθησαν (feared) σφόδρα (greatly), λέγοντες (saying), “Ἀληθῶς (Truly) Θεοῦ (God’s) Υἱὸς (Son) ἦν (was) οὗτος (this).”

³⁵ Καὶ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), ὁ (the) ἄγγελος (angel) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῇ (to her), “Πνεῦμα (the Spirit) Ἅγιον (Holy) ἐπελεύσεται (will come) ἐπὶ (upon) σέ (you), καὶ (and) δύναμις (power) Ὑψίστου (of the Most High) ἐπισκιάσει (will overshadow) σοι (you); διὸ (therefore) καὶ (also) τὸ (the) γεννώμενον (being born) ἅγιον (Holy One) κληθήσεται (will be called) Υἱὸς (the Son) Θεοῦ (of God).

³⁴ κἀγὼ (And I) ἑώρακα (have seen) καὶ (and) μεμαρτύρηκα (have borne witness) ὅτι (that) οὗτός (this) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).”

⁴⁹ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) αὐτῷ (Him) Ναθαναήλ (Nathanael), “Ῥαββί (Rabbi), σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God); σὺ (You) Βασιλεὺς (King) εἶ (are) τοῦ (-) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel).”

¹⁶ Οὕτως (Thus) γὰρ (for) ἠγάπησεν (loved) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), ὥστε (that) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son), τὸν (the) μονογενῆ (only begotten), ἔδωκεν (He gave), ἵνα (so that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) αὐτὸν (Him) μὴ (not) ἀπόληται (should perish), ἀλλ’ (but) ἔχῃ (should have) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal).

³⁵ Ὁ (The) Πατὴρ (Father) ἀγαπᾷ (loves) τὸν (the) Υἱόν (Son), καὶ (and) πάντα (all things) δέδωκεν (has given) ἐν (into) τῇ (the) χειρὶ (hand) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ³⁶ ὁ (The one) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) ἔχει (has) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal); ὁ (the one) δὲ (however) ἀπειθῶν (not obeying) τῷ (the) Υἱῷ (Son), οὐκ (not) ὄψεται (will see) ζωήν (life), ἀλλ’ (but) ἡ (the) ὀργὴ (wrath) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) μένει (abides) ἐπ’ (on) αὐτόν (him).”

⁶⁹ καὶ (and) ἡμεῖς (we) πεπιστεύκαμεν (have believed) καὶ (and) ἐγνώκαμεν (have known) ὅτι (that) σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Ἅγιος (Holy One) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).”

⁵⁸ Εἶπεν (Said) αὐτοῖς (to them) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), πρὶν (before) Ἀβραὰμ (Abraham) γενέσθαι (was), ἐγὼ (I) εἰμί (am).”

⁷ Ἀπεκρίθησαν (Answered) αὐτῷ (him) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews), “Ἡμεῖς (We) νόμον (a law) ἔχομεν (have), καὶ (and) κατὰ (according to) τὸν (the) νόμον (law), ὀφείλει (He ought) ἀποθανεῖν (to die), ὅτι (because) Υἱὸν (the Son) Θεοῦ (of God) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) ἐποίησεν (He made).”

²⁸ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Θωμᾶς (Thomas) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ὁ (The) Κύριός (Lord) μου (of Me) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Θεός (God) μου (of me)!”

³¹ ταῦτα (these) δὲ (however) γέγραπται (have been written) ἵνα (that) πιστεύητε (you may believe) ὅτι (that) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Χριστὸς (Christ), ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), καὶ (and) ἵνα (that) πιστεύοντες (believing), ζωὴν (life) ἔχητε (you may have) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

³⁶ Ὡς (As) δὲ (then) ἐπορεύοντο (they were going) κατὰ (along) τὴν (the) ὁδόν (road), ἦλθον (they came) ἐπί (upon) τι (some) ὕδωρ (water), καί (and) φησιν (says) ὁ (the) εὐνοῦχος (eunuch), “Ἰδοὺ (Behold) ὕδωρ (water); τί (what) κωλύει (prevents) με (me) βαπτισθῆναι (to be baptized)?”

²⁰ Καὶ (And) εὐθέως (immediately) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) συναγωγαῖς (synagogues) ἐκήρυσσεν (he began proclaiming) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), ὅτι (that) οὗτός (He) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

²² Τότε (Then) ἔδοξε (it seemed good) τοῖς (to the) ἀποστόλοις (apostles) καὶ (and) τοῖς (to the) πρεσβυτέροις (elders), σὺν (with) ὅλῃ (all) τῇ (the) ἐκκλησίᾳ (church), ἐκλεξαμένους (having chosen) ἄνδρας (men) ἐξ (out from) αὐτῶν (them), πέμψαι (to send) εἰς (to) Ἀντιόχειαν (Antioch) σὺν (with) τῷ (-) Παύλῳ (Paul) καὶ (and) Βαρνάβᾳ (Barnabas): Ἰούδαν (Judas) τὸν (-) καλούμενον (called) Βαρσαββᾶν (Barsabbas), καὶ (and) Σιλᾶν (Silas), ἄνδρας (men) ἡγουμένους (leading) ἐν (among) τοῖς (the) ἀδελφοῖς (brothers),

⁵ Ὡς (When) δὲ (now) κατῆλθον (came down) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (-) Μακεδονίας (Macedonia) ὅ (-) τε (both) Σιλᾶς (Silas) καὶ (and) ὁ (-) Τιμόθεος (Timothy), συνείχετο (was occupied) τῷ (with the) λόγῳ (word) ὁ (-) Παῦλος (Paul), διαμαρτυρόμενος (earnestly testifying) τοῖς (to the) Ἰουδαίοις (Jews) εἶναι (to be) τὸν (the) Χριστὸν (Christ) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus).

³ περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him), τοῦ (-) γενομένου (having come) ἐκ (of the) σπέρματος (seed) Δαυὶδ (of David) κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (flesh), ⁴ τοῦ (-) ὁρισθέντος (having been declared) Υἱοῦ (Son) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐν (in) δυνάμει (power) κατὰ (according to the) πνεῦμα (Spirit) ἁγιωσύνης (of holiness) ἐξ (by) ἀναστάσεως (resurrection) νεκρῶν (from the dead), Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us);

¹¹ αὐτοὶ (They) ἀπολοῦνται (will perish); σὺ (You) δὲ (however) διαμένεις (remain); καὶ (and) πάντες (all) ὡς (like) ἱμάτιον (a garment) παλαιωθήσονται (will grow old);

⁸ Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἐχθὲς (yesterday) καὶ (and) σήμερον (today) ὁ (is the) αὐτός (same), καὶ (and) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (ages).

¹⁷ λαβὼν (Having received) γὰρ (for) παρὰ (from) Θεοῦ (God) Πατρὸς (the Father) τιμὴν (honor) καὶ (and) δόξαν (glory), φωνῆς (a voice) ἐνεχθείσης (was brought) αὐτῷ (to Him), τοιᾶσδε (such as follows) ὑπὸ (by) τῆς (the) μεγαλοπρεποῦς (Majestic) δόξης (Glory): “Ὁ (The) Υἱός (Son) μου (of Me), ὁ (-) ἀγαπητός (beloved) μου (of Me), οὗτός (this) ἐστιν (is), εἰς (in) ὃν (whom) ἐγὼ (I) εὐδόκησα (have found delight).”

³ ὃ (that which) ἑωράκαμεν (we have seen) καὶ (and) ἀκηκόαμεν (have heard), ἀπαγγέλλομεν (we proclaim) καὶ (also) ὑμῖν (to you), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) κοινωνίαν (fellowship) ἔχητε (may have) μεθ’ (with) ἡμῶν (us). καὶ (Indeed) ἡ (the) κοινωνία (fellowship) δὲ (now) ἡ (-) ἡμετέρα (of us) μετὰ (is with) τοῦ (the) Πατρὸς (Father), καὶ (and) μετὰ (with) τοῦ (the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him), Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ).

⁹ Εἰ (If) τὴν (the) μαρτυρίαν (testimony) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (of men) λαμβάνομεν (we receive), ἡ (the) μαρτυρία (testimony) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) μείζων (greater) ἐστίν (is). ὅτι (For) αὕτη (this) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) μαρτυρία (testimony) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ὅτι (that) μεμαρτύρηκεν (He has testified) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ¹⁰ ὁ (The one) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἔχει (has) τὴν (the) μαρτυρίαν (testimony) ἐν (in) αὑτῷ (himself). ὁ (The one) μὴ (not) πιστεύων (believing) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God), ψεύστην (a liar) πεποίηκεν (has made) αὐτόν (Him), ὅτι (because) οὐ (not) πεπίστευκεν (he has believed) εἰς (in) τὴν (the) μαρτυρίαν (testimony) ἣν (that) μεμαρτύρηκεν (has testified) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (Him). ¹¹ Καὶ (And) αὕτη (this) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) μαρτυρία (testimony), ὅτι (that) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal) ἔδωκεν (has given) «ὁ (-) Θεὸς» (God) ἡμῖν (to us), καὶ (and) αὕτη (this) ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Υἱῷ (Son) αὐτοῦ (His) ἐστιν (is). ¹² ὁ (The one) ἔχων (having) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) ἔχει (has) τὴν (-) ζωήν (life); ὁ (the one) μὴ (not) ἔχων (having) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), τὴν (-) ζωὴν (life) οὐκ (not) ἔχει (has). ¹³ Ταῦτα (These things) ἔγραψα (have I written) ὑμῖν (to you) ἵνα (so that) εἰδῆτε (you may know) ὅτι (that) ζωὴν (life) ἔχετε (you have) αἰώνιον (eternal), τοῖς (to those) πιστεύουσιν (believing) εἰς (in) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

⁸ “Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) τὸ (the) Ἄλφα (Alpha) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) Ὦ (Omega),” λέγει (says) Κύριος (Lord) ὁ (-) Θεός (God), ὁ (the One) ὢν (being), καὶ (and) ὁ (who) ἦν (was), καὶ (and) ὁ (who) ἐρχόμενος (is coming), ὁ (the) Παντοκράτωρ (Almighty).

¹¹ λεγούσης (saying), “Ὃ (What) βλέπεις (you see), γράψον (write) εἰς (in) βιβλίον (a book), καὶ (and) πέμψον (send) ταῖς (to the) ἑπτὰ (seven) ἐκκλησίαις (churches), εἰς (to) Ἔφεσον (Ephesus), καὶ (and) εἰς (to) Σμύρναν (Smyrna), καὶ (and) εἰς (to) Πέργαμον (Pergamum), καὶ (and) εἰς (to) Θυάτειρα (Thyatira), καὶ (and) εἰς (to) Σάρδεις (Sardis), καὶ (and) εἰς (to) Φιλαδέλφειαν (Philadelphia), καὶ (and) εἰς (to) Λαοδίκειαν (Laodicea).”

¹⁷ Καὶ (And) ὅτε (when) εἶδον (I saw) αὐτόν (Him), ἔπεσα (I fell) πρὸς (at) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ὡς (as though) νεκρός (dead). καὶ (And) ἔθηκεν (He placed) τὴν (the) δεξιὰν (right hand) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐπ’ (upon) ἐμὲ (me), λέγων (saying), “Μὴ (Not) φοβοῦ (fear). ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ὁ (the) πρῶτος (First) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) ἔσχατος (Last),

¹⁸ Καὶ (And) τῷ (to) ἀγγέλῳ (the messenger) τῆς (of the) ἐν (in) Θυατείροις (Thyatira) ἐκκλησίας (church) γράψον (write): Τάδε (These things) λέγει (says) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ὁ (the One) ἔχων (having) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ὡς (like) φλόγα (a flame) πυρός (of fire), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) πόδες (feet) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ὅμοιοι (like) χαλκολιβάνῳ (burnished bronze).

¹³ Καὶ (And) μὴ (not) εἰσενέγκῃς (lead) ἡμᾶς (us) εἰς (into) πειρασμόν (temptation), Ἀλλὰ (but) ῥῦσαι (deliver) ἡμᾶς (us) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (-) πονηροῦ (evil).’

¹⁴ “Δόξα (Glory) ἐν (in) ὑψίστοις (the highest) Θεῷ (to God), καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (on) γῆς (earth) εἰρήνη (peace) ἐν (among) ἀνθρώποις (men) εὐδοκίας (with whom He is pleased)!”

¹⁷ ὅτι (For) ὁ (the) νόμος (law) διὰ (through) Μωϋσέως (Moses) ἐδόθη (was given); ἡ (-) χάρις (grace) καὶ (and) ἡ (-) ἀλήθεια (truth) διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) ἐγένετο (came).

⁵ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly), λέγω (I say) σοι (to you), ἐὰν (if) μή (not) τις (anyone) γεννηθῇ (be born) ἐξ (of) ὕδατος (water) καὶ (and) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit), οὐ (not) δύναται (he is able) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

⁶ Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to him) ‹ὁ› (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ἡ (the) ὁδὸς (way), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἀλήθεια (truth), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ζωή (life). οὐδεὶς (No one) ἔρχεται (comes) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) δι’ (by) ἐμοῦ (Me).

²⁵ ὑμεῖς (You) ἐστε (are) οἱ (the) υἱοὶ (sons) τῶν (of the) προφητῶν (prophets) καὶ (and) τῆς (of the) διαθήκης (covenant) ἧς (that) «ὁ (-) Θεὸς» (God) διέθετο (made) πρὸς (with) τοὺς (the) πατέρας (fathers) ὑμῶν (of you), λέγων (saying) πρὸς (to) Ἀβραάμ (Abraham), ‘Καὶ (And) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) σπέρματί (seed) σου (of you) ἐνευλογηθήσονται (will be blessed) πᾶσαι (all) αἱ (the) πατριαὶ (families) τῆς (of the) γῆς (earth).’ ²⁶ ὑμῖν (To you) πρῶτον (first), ἀναστήσας (having raised up) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τὸν (the) Παῖδα (servant) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἀπέστειλεν (sent) αὐτὸν (Him), εὐλογοῦντα (blessing) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) ἀποστρέφειν (turning away) ἕκαστον (each) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) πονηριῶν (wickednesses) ὑμῶν (of you).”

³² Καὶ (And) ἡμεῖς (we) ὑμᾶς (to you) εὐαγγελιζόμεθα (preach the gospel), τὴν (the) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) πατέρας (fathers) ἐπαγγελίαν (promise) γενομένην (having been made), ³³ ὅτι (that) ταύτην (this) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐκπεπλήρωκεν (has fulfilled), τοῖς (to the) τέκνοις (children) [αὐτῶν] (of them), ἡμῶν (to us), ἀναστήσας (having raised up) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), ὡς (as) καὶ (also) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ψαλμῷ (psalm) γέγραπται (it has been written), τῷ (the) δευτέρῳ (second): ‘Υἱός (Son) μου (of Me) εἶ (are) σύ (You), ἐγὼ (I) σήμερον (today) γεγέννηκά (have begotten) σε (you).’ ³⁴ Ὅτι (That) δὲ (then) ἀνέστησεν (He raised) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead), μηκέτι (no more) μέλλοντα (being about) ὑποστρέφειν (to return) εἰς (to) διαφθοράν (decay), οὕτως (thus) εἴρηκεν (He spoke) ὅτι (-): ‘Δώσω (I will give) ὑμῖν (to you) τὰ (the) ὅσια (holy blessings) Δαυὶδ (of David), τὰ (the) πιστά (sure blessings).’ ³⁵ Διότι (Therefore) καὶ (also) ἐν (in) ἑτέρῳ (another) λέγει (He says): ‘Οὐ (Not) δώσεις (You will allow) τὸν (the) Ὅσιόν (Holy One) σου (of you) ἰδεῖν (to see) διαφθοράν (decay).’ ³⁶ Δαυὶδ (David) μὲν (indeed) γὰρ (for) ἰδίᾳ (in his own) γενεᾷ (generation) ὑπηρετήσας (having served) τῇ (the) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) βουλῇ (purpose), ἐκοιμήθη (fell asleep) καὶ (and) προσετέθη (was added) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) πατέρας (fathers) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) εἶδεν (saw) διαφθοράν (decay). ³⁷ ὃν (The One) δὲ (however) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἤγειρεν (raised up) οὐκ (not) εἶδεν (did see) διαφθοράν (decay). ³⁸ Γνωστὸν (Known) οὖν (therefore) ἔστω (be it) ὑμῖν (to you), ἄνδρες (men), ἀδελφοί (brothers), ὅτι (that) διὰ (through) τούτου (this One), ὑμῖν (to you) ἄφεσις (forgiveness) ἁμαρτιῶν (of sins) καταγγέλλεται (is proclaimed). ³⁹ καὶ (And) ἀπὸ (from) πάντων (all things) ὧν (from which) οὐκ (not) ἠδυνήθητε (you were able) ἐν (in) νόμῳ (the law) Μωϋσέως (of Moses) δικαιωθῆναι (to be justified), ἐν (in) τούτῳ (Him) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) πιστεύων (believing) δικαιοῦται (is justified).

²³ τὰ (The) γὰρ (for) ὀψώνια (wages) τῆς (-) ἁμαρτίας (of sin) θάνατος (is death); τὸ (-) δὲ (but) χάρισμα (the gift) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ζωὴ (life) αἰώνιος (eternal) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) τῷ (the) Κυρίῳ (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us).

³⁶ ὅτι (For) ἐξ (from) αὐτοῦ (Him), καὶ (and) δι’ (through) αὐτοῦ (Him), καὶ (and) εἰς (unto) αὐτὸν (Him) τὰ (-) πάντα (are all things). αὐτῷ (To Him be) ἡ (the) δόξα (glory) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (ages)! ἀμήν (Amen).

⁷ Διὸ (Therefore) προσλαμβάνεσθε (receive) ἀλλήλους (one another) καθὼς (as) καὶ (also) ὁ (-) Χριστὸς (Christ) προσελάβετο (received) ὑμᾶς* (you), εἰς (to) δόξαν (the glory) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God). ⁸ λέγω (I say) γὰρ (for), Χριστὸν (Christ) διάκονον (a servant) γεγενῆσθαι (to have become) περιτομῆς (of the circumcision) ὑπὲρ (for) ἀληθείας (the truth) Θεοῦ (of God), εἰς (in order) τὸ (-) βεβαιῶσαι (to confirm) τὰς (the) ἐπαγγελίας (promises given) τῶν (to the) πατέρων (fathers), ⁹ τὰ (-) δὲ (and for) ἔθνη (the Gentiles), ὑπὲρ (for) ἐλέους (mercy), δοξάσαι (to glorify) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), καθὼς (as) γέγραπται (it has been written): “Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this) ἐξομολογήσομαί (I will praise) σοι (You) ἐν (among) ἔθνεσιν (the Gentiles), καὶ (and) τῷ (to the) ὀνόματί (name) σου (of You) ψαλῶ (will I sing).”

¹⁶ ἐπεὶ (Otherwise) ἐὰν (if) εὐλογῇς (you bless) [ἐν] (with the) πνεύματι (spirit), ὁ (the one) ἀναπληρῶν (filling) τὸν (the) τόπον (place) τοῦ (of the) ἰδιώτου (uninstructed), πῶς (how) ἐρεῖ (will he say) τὸ (the) “Ἀμήν (Amen)” ἐπὶ (at) τῇ (-) σῇ (your) εὐχαριστίᾳ (thanksgiving), ἐπειδὴ (since) τί (what) λέγεις (you say) οὐκ (not) οἶδεν (he knows)?

⁶ ὅτι (For it is) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God), ὁ (-) εἰπών (having said), “Ἐκ (Out of) σκότους (darkness) φῶς (light) λάμψει (shall shine),” ὃς (who) ἔλαμψεν (shone) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) καρδίαις (hearts) ἡμῶν (of us) πρὸς (for the) φωτισμὸν (radiance) τῆς (of the) γνώσεως (knowledge) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐν (in) προσώπῳ (the face) [Ἰησοῦ] (of Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ).

¹⁶ τῷ (-) δὲ (And) Ἀβραὰμ (to Abraham) ἐρρέθησαν (were spoken) αἱ (the) ἐπαγγελίαι (promises), καὶ (and) τῷ (to the) σπέρματι (seed) αὐτοῦ (of him). οὐ (Not) λέγει (it does say), “Καὶ (and) τοῖς (-) σπέρμασιν (to seeds),” ὡς (as) ἐπὶ (of) πολλῶν (many); ἀλλ’ (but) ὡς (as) ἐφ’ (of) ἑνός (One), “Καὶ (and) τῷ (to the) σπέρματί (seed) σου (of you),” ὅς (who) ἐστιν (is) Χριστός (Christ). ¹⁷ Τοῦτο (This) δὲ (now) λέγω (I say): διαθήκην (The covenant), προκεκυρωμένην (having been confirmed beforehand) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God), ὁ (-) μετὰ (afterward) τετρακόσια (four hundred) καὶ (and) τριάκοντα (thirty) ἔτη (years) γεγονὼς (having come), νόμος (the law) οὐκ (not) ἀκυροῖ (does annul), εἰς (so as) τὸ (-) καταργῆσαι (to nullify) τὴν (the) ἐπαγγελίαν (promise). ¹⁸ εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) ἐκ (by) νόμου (the Law is) ἡ (the) κληρονομία (inheritance), οὐκέτι (it is no longer) ἐξ (by) ἐπαγγελίας (a promise); τῷ (-) δὲ (but) Ἀβραὰμ (to Abraham) δι’ (through) ἐπαγγελίας (a promise) κεχάρισται (has granted it) ὁ (-) Θεός (God).

²² ἀλλὰ (but) συνέκλεισεν (imprisoned) ἡ (the) γραφὴ (Scripture) τὰ (things) πάντα (all) ὑπὸ (under) ἁμαρτίαν (sin), ἵνα (so that) ἡ (the) ἐπαγγελία (promise), ἐκ (by) πίστεως (faith) Ἰησοῦ (from Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), δοθῇ (might be given) τοῖς (to those) πιστεύουσιν (believing).

⁶ εἰς (to) ἔπαινον (the praise) δόξης (of the glory) τῆς (of the) χάριτος (of grace) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἧς (which) ἐχαρίτωσεν (He has freely given) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Ἠγαπημένῳ (Beloved One),

⁷ ἵνα (in order that) ἐνδείξηται (He might show) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) αἰῶσιν (ages) τοῖς (that) ἐπερχομένοις (are coming) τὸ (the) ὑπερβάλλον (surpassing) πλοῦτος (riches) τῆς (of the) χάριτος (grace) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐν (in) χρηστότητι (kindness) ἐφ’ (toward) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).

⁸ Ἐμοὶ (To me), τῷ (the) ἐλαχιστοτέρῳ (very least) πάντων (of all) ἁγίων (saints), ἐδόθη (was given) ἡ (the) χάρις (grace) αὕτη (this): τοῖς (to the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles) εὐαγγελίσασθαι (to preach) τὸ (the) ἀνεξιχνίαστον (unsearchable) πλοῦτος (riches) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), ⁹ καὶ (and) φωτίσαι (to enlighten) ‹πάντας› (all) τίς (what is) ἡ (the) οἰκονομία (administration) τοῦ (of the) μυστηρίου (mystery) τοῦ (-) ἀποκεκρυμμένου (having been hidden) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) αἰώνων (ages) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God), τῷ (the One) τὰ (-) πάντα (all things) κτίσαντι (having created), ¹⁰ ἵνα (so that) γνωρισθῇ (should be made known) νῦν (now) ταῖς (to the) ἀρχαῖς (rulers) καὶ (and) ταῖς (the) ἐξουσίαις (authorities) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ἐπουρανίοις (heavenly realms), διὰ (through) τῆς (the) ἐκκλησίας (church), ἡ (the) πολυποίκιλος (manifold) σοφία (wisdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God),

²⁷ οἷς (to whom) ἠθέλησεν (has willed) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) γνωρίσαι (to make known) τί (what is) τὸ (the) πλοῦτος (riches) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) τοῦ (of the) μυστηρίου (mystery) τούτου (this) ἐν (among) τοῖς (the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles), ὅ* (which) ἐστιν (is) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you), ἡ (the) ἐλπὶς (hope) τῆς (-) δόξης (of glory),

¹⁰ ὅταν (when) ἔλθῃ (He shall come) ἐνδοξασθῆναι (to be glorified) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ἁγίοις (saints) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) θαυμασθῆναι (to be marveled at) ἐν (among) πᾶσιν (all) τοῖς (those) πιστεύσασιν (having believed), ὅτι (because) ἐπιστεύθη (was believed) τὸ (the) μαρτύριον (testimony) ἡμῶν (of us) ἐφ’ (to) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) ἐκείνῃ (that),

¹² ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) νωθροὶ (sluggish) γένησθε (you may be), μιμηταὶ (imitators) δὲ (however) τῶν (of those) διὰ (through) πίστεως (faith) καὶ (and) μακροθυμίας (patience) κληρονομούντων (inheriting) τὰς (the) ἐπαγγελίας (promises). ¹³ Τῷ (-) γὰρ (For) Ἀβραὰμ (to Abraham) ἐπαγγειλάμενος (having made His promise), ὁ (-) Θεός (God), ἐπεὶ (since) κατ’ (by) οὐδενὸς (no one) εἶχεν (He had) μείζονος (greater) ὀμόσαι (to swear), ὤμοσεν (He swore) καθ’ (by) ἑαυτοῦ (Himself), ¹⁴ λέγων (saying), “Εἰ (If) μὴν (surely) εὐλογῶν (blessing) εὐλογήσω (I will bless) σε (you), καὶ (and) πληθύνων (multiplying) πληθυνῶ (I will multiply) σε (you).” ¹⁵ καὶ (And) οὕτως (thus) μακροθυμήσας (having waited patiently), ἐπέτυχεν (he obtained) τῆς (the) ἐπαγγελίας (promise). ¹⁶ Ἄνθρωποι (Men) γὰρ (for) κατὰ (by) τοῦ (one) μείζονος (greater) ὀμνύουσιν (swear), καὶ (and) πάσης (of all) αὐτοῖς (their) ἀντιλογίας (disputes) πέρας (an end), εἰς (for) βεβαίωσιν (confirmation), ὁ (is the) ὅρκος (oath), ¹⁷ ἐν (in) ᾧ (which) περισσότερον (more abundantly) βουλόμενος (desiring) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐπιδεῖξαι (to show) τοῖς (to the) κληρονόμοις (heirs) τῆς (of the) ἐπαγγελίας (promise) τὸ (the) ἀμετάθετον (unchangeableness) τῆς (of the) βουλῆς (purpose) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἐμεσίτευσεν (guaranteed it) ὅρκῳ (by an oath), ¹⁸ ἵνα (so that) διὰ (by) δύο (two) πραγμάτων (things) ἀμεταθέτων (unchangeable), ἐν (in) οἷς (which) ἀδύνατον (it is impossible) ψεύσασθαι (to lie) [τὸν] (-) Θεόν (for God), ἰσχυρὰν (strong) παράκλησιν (encouragement) ἔχωμεν (we may have), οἱ (-) καταφυγόντες (having fled for refuge), κρατῆσαι (to take hold) τῆς (of the) προκειμένης (being set before us) ἐλπίδος (hope), ¹⁹ ἣν (which) ὡς (as) ἄγκυραν (an anchor) ἔχομεν (we have) τῆς (of the) ψυχῆς (soul), ἀσφαλῆ (sure) τε (both) καὶ (and) βεβαίαν (unshakable) καὶ (and) εἰσερχομένην (entering) εἰς (into) τὸ (that) ἐσώτερον (within) τοῦ (the) καταπετάσματος (veil),

⁶ ὁ (The one) δὲ (however) μὴ (not) γενεαλογούμενος (tracing his ancestry) ἐξ (from) αὐτῶν (them) δεδεκάτωκεν (has collected a tenth) Ἀβραάμ (from Abraham), καὶ (and) τὸν (the one) ἔχοντα (having) τὰς (the) ἐπαγγελίας (promises) εὐλόγηκεν (has blessed).

¹⁰ μόνον (consisting only) ἐπὶ (in) βρώμασιν (foods) καὶ (and) πόμασιν (drinks) καὶ (and) διαφόροις (various) βαπτισμοῖς (washings), δικαιώματα (ordinances) σαρκὸς (of the flesh), μέχρι (until) καιροῦ (the time) διορθώσεως (of reformation) ἐπικείμενα (being imposed). ¹¹ Χριστὸς (Christ) δὲ (however), παραγενόμενος (having appeared as) ἀρχιερεὺς (high priest) τῶν (of the) γενομένων (having come) ἀγαθῶν (good things), διὰ (by) τῆς (the) μείζονος (greater) καὶ (and) τελειοτέρας (more perfect) σκηνῆς (tabernacle) οὐ (not) χειροποιήτου (made by hands), τοῦτ’ (that) ἔστιν (is), οὐ (not) ταύτης (of this) τῆς (-) κτίσεως (creation), ¹² οὐδὲ (nor) δι’ (by) αἵματος (blood) τράγων (of goats) καὶ (and) μόσχων (calves), διὰ (through) δὲ (however) τοῦ (the) ἰδίου (own) αἵματος (blood), εἰσῆλθεν (He entered) ἐφάπαξ (once for all) εἰς (into) τὰ (the) ἅγια (holy places), αἰωνίαν (eternal) λύτρωσιν (redemption) εὑράμενος (having obtained). ¹³ Εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) τὸ (the) αἷμα (blood) τράγων (of goats), καὶ (and) ταύρων (of bulls), καὶ (and) σποδὸς (the ashes) δαμάλεως (of a heifer), ῥαντίζουσα (sprinkling) τοὺς (the) κεκοινωμένους (having been defiled), ἁγιάζει (sanctify them) πρὸς (for) τὴν (the) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh) καθαρότητα (purification), ¹⁴ πόσῳ (how much) μᾶλλον (more) τὸ (the) αἷμα (blood) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), ὃς (who) διὰ (through) Πνεύματος (the Spirit) αἰωνίου (eternal), ἑαυτὸν (Himself) προσήνεγκεν (offered) ἄμωμον (unblemished) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), καθαριεῖ (will purify) τὴν (the) συνείδησιν (conscience) ἡμῶν (of us) ἀπὸ (from) νεκρῶν (dead) ἔργων (works), εἰς (in order) τὸ (-) λατρεύειν (to serve) Θεῷ (God) ζῶντι (the living)! ¹⁵ Καὶ (And) διὰ (because of) τοῦτο (this), διαθήκης (of a covenant) καινῆς (new) μεσίτης (the mediator) ἐστίν (He is), ὅπως (so that), θανάτου (death) γενομένου (having taken place), εἰς (for) ἀπολύτρωσιν (redemption) τῶν (of the) ἐπὶ (under) τῇ (the) πρώτῃ (first) διαθήκῃ (covenant) παραβάσεων (transgressions), τὴν (the) ἐπαγγελίαν (promise) λάβωσιν (might receive) οἱ (those) κεκλημένοι (having been called), τῆς (of the) αἰωνίου (eternal) κληρονομίας (inheritance).

¹³ Κατὰ (In) πίστιν (faith) ἀπέθανον (died) οὗτοι (these) πάντες (all), μὴ (not) κομισάμενοι (having received) τὰς (the) ἐπαγγελίας (promises), ἀλλὰ (but) πόρρωθεν (from afar) αὐτὰς (them) ἰδόντες (having seen), καὶ (and) ἀσπασάμενοι (having embraced them), καὶ (and) ὁμολογήσαντες (having confessed) ὅτι (that) ξένοι (strangers) καὶ (and) παρεπίδημοί (sojourners) εἰσιν (they are) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth).

³⁹ Καὶ (And) οὗτοι (these) πάντες (all), μαρτυρηθέντες (having been commended) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) πίστεως (faith), οὐκ (not) ἐκομίσαντο (did receive) τὴν (the) ἐπαγγελίαν (promise), ⁴⁰ τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) περὶ (for) ἡμῶν (us) κρεῖττόν (better) τι (something) προβλεψαμένου (having planned), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) χωρὶς (apart from) ἡμῶν (us) τελειωθῶσιν (they should be made perfect).

¹² οἷς (to whom) ἀπεκαλύφθη (it was revealed) ὅτι (that) οὐχ (not) ἑαυτοῖς (themselves), ὑμῖν (you) δὲ (however), διηκόνουν (they were serving) αὐτά (in those things) ἃ (which) νῦν (now) ἀνηγγέλη (have been proclaimed) ὑμῖν (to you) διὰ (by) τῶν (those) εὐαγγελισαμένων (having proclaimed the gospel to) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐν (by) Πνεύματι (the Spirit) Ἁγίῳ (Holy) ἀποσταλέντι (having been sent) ἀπ’ (from) οὐρανοῦ (heaven), εἰς (into) ἃ (which) ἐπιθυμοῦσιν (desire) ἄγγελοι (angels) παρακύψαι (to look).

¹¹ Καὶ (And) αὕτη (this) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) μαρτυρία (testimony), ὅτι (that) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal) ἔδωκεν (has given) «ὁ (-) Θεὸς» (God) ἡμῖν (to us), καὶ (and) αὕτη (this) ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Υἱῷ (Son) αὐτοῦ (His) ἐστιν (is).

¹² λέγοντες (saying), “Ἀμήν (Amen)! ἡ (-) εὐλογία (Blessing), καὶ (and) ἡ (-) δόξα (glory), καὶ (and) ἡ (-) σοφία (wisdom), καὶ (and) ἡ (-) εὐχαριστία (thanksgiving), καὶ (and) ἡ (-) τιμὴ (honor), καὶ (and) ἡ (-) δύναμις (power), καὶ (and) ἡ (-) ἰσχὺς (strength), τῷ (to the) Θεῷ (God) ἡμῶν (of us), εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (ages) τῶν (of the) αἰώνων (ages)! ἀμήν (Amen).”

³⁴ ὃν (He whom) γὰρ (for) ἀπέστειλεν (sent) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God), τὰ (the) ῥήματα (words) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) λαλεῖ (speaks), οὐ (not) γὰρ (for) ἐκ (by) μέτρου (measure) δίδωσιν (He gives) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit).

³⁸ Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) τὸν (-) ἀπὸ (from) Ναζαρέθ (Nazareth), ὡς (how) ἔχρισεν (anointed) αὐτὸν (Him) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) Πνεύματι (Spirit) Ἁγίῳ (with Holy) καὶ (and) δυνάμει (with power), ὃς (who) διῆλθεν (went about) εὐεργετῶν (doing good) καὶ (and) ἰώμενος (healing) πάντας (all) τοὺς (those) καταδυναστευομένους (being oppressed) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (the) διαβόλου (devil), ὅτι (because) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἦν (was) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him).

⁹ Ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (now) οὐκ (not) ἐστὲ (are) ἐν (in) σαρκὶ (flesh), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐν (in) πνεύματι (Spirit), εἴπερ (if indeed the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) Θεοῦ (of God) οἰκεῖ (dwells) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you); εἰ (if) δέ (however) τις (anyone) Πνεῦμα (the Spirit) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) οὐκ (not) ἔχει (has), οὗτος (he) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

²⁵ Τῷ (To Him) δὲ (now) δυναμένῳ (being able) ὑμᾶς (you) στηρίξαι (to strengthen), κατὰ (according to) τὸ (-) εὐαγγέλιόν (gospel) μου (my) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) κήρυγμα (preaching) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), κατὰ (according to) ἀποκάλυψιν (the revelation) μυστηρίου (of the mystery), χρόνοις (in times) αἰωνίοις (of the ages) σεσιγημένου (having been kept secret),

⁷ ἐρριζωμένοι (having been rooted) καὶ (and) ἐποικοδομούμενοι (being built up) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him), καὶ (and) βεβαιούμενοι (being strengthened in) τῇ (the) πίστει (faith) καθὼς (just as) ἐδιδάχθητε (you were taught), περισσεύοντες (abounding) ἐν (with) εὐχαριστίᾳ (thanksgiving). ⁸ καὶ (And) τότε (then) ἀποκαλυφθήσεται (will be revealed) ὁ (the) ἄνομος (lawless one), ὃν (whom) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἀνελεῖ (will slay) τῷ (with the) πνεύματι (breath) τοῦ (of the) στόματος (mouth) αὐτοῦ (of Him) καὶ (and) καταργήσει (will annul) τῇ (by the) ἐπιφανείᾳ (appearing) τῆς (of the) παρουσίας (coming) αὐτοῦ (of Him),

¹⁷ παρακαλέσαι (may He encourage) ὑμῶν (your) τὰς (-) καρδίας (hearts) καὶ (and) στηρίξαι (may He strengthen them) ἐν (in) παντὶ (every) ἔργῳ (work) καὶ (and) λόγῳ (word) ἀγαθῷ (good).

³ Πιστὸς (Faithful) δέ (however) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord), ὃς (who) στηρίξει (will strengthen) ὑμᾶς (you) καὶ (and) φυλάξει (will keep you) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (-) πονηροῦ (evil).

¹⁰ Ὁ (The) δὲ (now) Θεὸς (God) πάσης (of all) χάριτος (grace), ὁ (the one) καλέσας (having called) ὑμᾶς (you) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) αἰώνιον (eternal) αὐτοῦ (of Him) δόξαν (glory) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ), ὀλίγον (a little while) παθόντας (of you having suffered), αὐτὸς (He Himself) καταρτίσει (will perfect), στηρίξει (will confirm), σθενώσει (will strengthen), θεμελιώσει (and will establish you).

²⁰ Καὶ (And) ὑμεῖς (you) χρῖσμα (the anointing) ἔχετε (have) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) Ἁγίου (Holy One), καὶ (and) οἴδατε (know you) πάντες (all).

²⁷ καὶ (And) ὑμεῖς (you), τὸ (the) χρῖσμα (anointing) ὃ (that) ἐλάβετε (you received) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (Him), μένει (abides) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) χρείαν (need) ἔχετε (you have) ἵνα (that) τις (anyone) διδάσκῃ (should teach) ὑμᾶς (you). ἀλλ’ (But) ὡς (just as) τὸ (the) αὐτοῦ (same) χρῖσμα (anointing) διδάσκει (teaches) ὑμᾶς (you) περὶ (concerning) πάντων (all things), καὶ (and) ἀληθές (true) ἐστιν (is), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ψεῦδος (a lie); καὶ (and) καθὼς (just as) ἐδίδαξεν (it has taught) ὑμᾶς (you), μένετε (you shall abide) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him).

⁶ καὶ (and) ἐποίησεν (He has made) ἡμᾶς (us) βασιλείαν (a kingdom), ἱερεῖς (priests) τῷ (to the) Θεῷ (God) καὶ (and) Πατρὶ (Father) αὐτοῦ (of Him) — αὐτῷ (to Him be) ἡ (the) δόξα (glory), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) κράτος (dominion) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (ages) τῶν (of the) αἰώνων (ages). ἀμήν (Amen).

¹⁸ συμβουλεύω (I counsel) σοι (you) ἀγοράσαι (to buy) παρ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (Me) χρυσίον (gold) πεπυρωμένον (having been refined) ἐκ (by) πυρὸς (fire) ἵνα (so that) πλουτήσῃς (you may be rich), καὶ (and) ἱμάτια (garments) λευκὰ (white) ἵνα (so that) περιβάλῃ (you may be clothed) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) φανερωθῇ (might be made manifest) ἡ (the) αἰσχύνη (shame) τῆς (of the) γυμνότητός (nakedness) σου (of you), καὶ (and) κολλούριον (eye-salve) ἐγχρῖσαι (to anoint) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμούς (eyes) σου (of you) ἵνα (so that) βλέπῃς (you may see).

²⁷ ἐργάζεσθε (Work) μὴ (not for) τὴν (the) βρῶσιν (food) τὴν (that) ἀπολλυμένην (is perishing), ἀλλὰ (but for) τὴν (the) βρῶσιν (food) τὴν (-) μένουσαν (enduring) εἰς (unto) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal), ἣν (which) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ὑμῖν (to you) δώσει (will give). τοῦτον (Him) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ἐσφράγισεν (has sealed), ὁ (-) Θεός (God).”

¹¹ Καὶ (And) σημεῖον (the sign) ἔλαβεν (he received) περιτομῆς (of circumcision), σφραγῖδα (a seal) τῆς (of the) δικαιοσύνης (righteousness) τῆς (of the) πίστεως (faith) τῆς (that he had) ἐν (while in) τῇ (the) ἀκροβυστίᾳ (uncircumcision), εἰς (for) τὸ (the) εἶναι (to be) αὐτὸν (him) πατέρα (father) πάντων (of all) τῶν (those) πιστευόντων (believing), δι’ (in) ἀκροβυστίας (uncircumcision), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) λογισθῆναι (to be credited) [καὶ] (also) αὐτοῖς (to them) τὴν (the) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness),

¹⁴ ὅσοι (As many as) γὰρ (for) Πνεύματι (by the Spirit) Θεοῦ (of God) ἄγονται (are led), οὗτοι (these) υἱοί (sons) εἰσιν (are) Θεοῦ (of God). ¹⁵ Οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ἐλάβετε (you have received) πνεῦμα (a spirit) δουλείας (of bondage) πάλιν (again) εἰς (to) φόβον (fear), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐλάβετε (you have received) πνεῦμα (the Spirit) υἱοθεσίας (of divine adoption as sons), ἐν (by) ᾧ (whom) κράζομεν (we cry), “Ἀββᾶ (Abba)! ὁ (-) Πατήρ (Father)!” ¹⁶ αὐτὸ (Himself) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) συμμαρτυρεῖ (bears witness with) τῷ (the) πνεύματι (spirit) ἡμῶν (of us) ὅτι (that) ἐσμὲν (we are) τέκνα (children) Θεοῦ (of God).

²³ οὐ (Not) μόνον (only so) δέ (now), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (even) αὐτοὶ (ourselves), τὴν (the) ἀπαρχὴν (firstfruit) τοῦ (of the) Πνεύματος (Spirit) ἔχοντες (having), ἡμεῖς (we) καὶ (also) αὐτοὶ (ourselves) ἐν (in) ἑαυτοῖς (ourselves) στενάζομεν (groan), υἱοθεσίαν (divine adoption as sons) ἀπεκδεχόμενοι (awaiting), τὴν (the) ἀπολύτρωσιν (redemption) τοῦ (of the) σώματος (body) ἡμῶν (of us).

³⁰ Καὶ (And) μὴ (not) λυπεῖτε (grieve) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τὸ (-) Ἅγιον (Holy) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἐν (in) ᾧ (whom) ἐσφραγίσθητε (you were sealed) εἰς (for) ἡμέραν (the day) ἀπολυτρώσεως (of redemption).

¹⁹ Ὁ (-) μέντοι (Nevertheless), στερεὸς (the firm) θεμέλιος (foundation) τοῦ (of) Θεοῦ (God) ἕστηκεν (stands), ἔχων (having) τὴν (the) σφραγῖδα (seal) ταύτην (this): “Ἔγνω (Knows) Κύριος (the Lord) τοὺς (those) ὄντας (being) αὐτοῦ (His),” καί (and), “Ἀποστήτω (Let depart) ἀπὸ (from) ἀδικίας (iniquity) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ὀνομάζων (naming) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) Κυρίου (of the Lord).”

¹⁷ Ὁ (The one) ἔχων (having) οὖς (an ear), ἀκουσάτω (let him hear) τί (what) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) λέγει (says) ταῖς (to the) ἐκκλησίαις (churches). Τῷ (The one) νικῶντι (overcoming), δώσω (I will give) αὐτῷ (to him) τοῦ (the) μάννα (manna) τοῦ (-) κεκρυμμένου (having been hidden); καὶ (and) δώσω (I will give) αὐτῷ (to him) ψῆφον (stone) λευκήν (white), καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (on) τὴν (the) ψῆφον (stone) ὄνομα (a name) καινὸν (new) γεγραμμένον (having been written), ὃ (which) οὐδεὶς (no one) οἶδεν (has known), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὁ (the one) λαμβάνων (receiving it).

³ λέγων (saying), “Μὴ (Not) ἀδικήσητε (harm) τὴν (the) γῆν (earth), μήτε (nor) τὴν (the) θάλασσαν (sea), μήτε (nor) τὰ (the) δένδρα (trees), ἄχρι (until) σφραγίσωμεν (we shall have sealed) τοὺς (the) δούλους (servants) τοῦ (of the) Θεοῦ (God) ἡμῶν (of us), ἐπὶ (on) τῶν (the) μετώπων (foreheads) αὐτῶν (of them).”

⁴ καὶ (And) ἐρρέθη (it was said) αὐταῖς* (to them), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) ἀδικήσουσιν (they shall harm) τὸν (the) χόρτον (grass) τῆς (of the) γῆς (earth), οὐδὲ (nor) πᾶν (any) χλωρὸν (green thing), οὐδὲ (nor) πᾶν (any) δένδρον (tree), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) τοὺς (the) ἀνθρώπους (men) οἵτινες (-) οὐκ (not) ἔχουσι* (having) τὴν (the) σφραγῖδα (seal) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐπὶ (on) τῶν (the) μετώπων (foreheads).

⁹ μάρτυς (Witness) γάρ (for) μού (my) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (-) Θεός (God), ᾧ (whom) λατρεύω (I serve) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) πνεύματί (spirit) μου (of me) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) εὐαγγελίῳ (gospel) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ὡς (how) ἀδιαλείπτως (unceasingly) μνείαν (mention) ὑμῶν (of you) ποιοῦμαι (I make),

²¹ τί (What) θέλετε (desire you)? ἐν (With) ῥάβδῳ (a rod) ἔλθω (I should come) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you), ἢ (or) ἐν (in) ἀγάπῃ (love), πνεύματί (a spirit) τε (then) πραΰτητος (of gentleness)?

⁵ παραδοῦναι (to deliver) τὸν (-) τοιοῦτον (such a one) τῷ (-) Σατανᾷ (to Satan) εἰς (for) ὄλεθρον (destruction) τῆς (of the) σαρκός (flesh), ἵνα (so that) τὸ (the) πνεῦμα (spirit) σωθῇ (may be saved) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord).

¹⁸ πιστὸς (Faithful) δὲ (however) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God is), ὅτι (that) ὁ (the) λόγος (word) ἡμῶν (of us) ὁ (-) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (was) “Ναί (Yes)” καὶ (and) “Οὔ (No).”

⁵ οὔτε (Never) γάρ (for) ποτε (at any time) ἐν (with) λόγῳ (word) κολακείας* (of flattery) ἐγενήθημεν (were we), καθὼς (just as) οἴδατε (you know), οὔτε (nor) ἐν (with) προφάσει (a pretext) πλεονεξίας (for greed) — Θεὸς (God is) μάρτυς (witness) —

²⁰ ὧν (among whom) ἐστιν (are) Ὑμέναιος (Hymenaeus) καὶ (and) Ἀλέξανδρος (Alexander), οὓς (whom) παρέδωκα (I have handed over) τῷ (-) Σατανᾷ (to Satan) ἵνα (that) παιδευθῶσιν (they may be disciplined) μὴ (not) βλασφημεῖν (to blaspheme).

⁸ Ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) μὴ (not) κληθῆτε (shall be called) ‘Ῥαββί (Rabbi);’ εἷς (One) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is) ὑμῶν (of you) ὁ (the) διδάσκαλος (Teacher), πάντες (all) δὲ (now) ὑμεῖς (you) ἀδελφοί (brothers) ἐστε (are). ⁹ καὶ (And) πατέρα (father) μὴ (no one) καλέσητε (call) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth); εἷς (One) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is) ὑμῶν (of you) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father), ὁ (who is) οὐράνιος (in heaven). ¹⁰ μηδὲ (Neither) κληθῆτε (be called) καθηγηταί (instructors), ὅτι (since) καθηγητὴς (the instructor) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐστιν (is) εἷς (One), ὁ (the) Χριστός (Christ).

⁴⁹ καὶ (and) ἄρξηται (should begin) τύπτειν (to beat) τοὺς (the) συνδούλους (fellow servants) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἐσθίῃ (to eat) δὲ (then) καὶ (and) πίνῃ (to drink) μετὰ (with) τῶν (those) μεθυόντων (being drunkards),

¹² τοῦτο (that) δέ (now) ἐστιν (is), συμπαρακληθῆναι (to be encouraged together) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you), διὰ (through) τῆς (the) ἐν (among) ἀλλήλοις (one another) πίστεως (faith) ὑμῶν (of you) τε (both) καὶ (and) ἐμοῦ (of me).

² δι’ (through) οὗ (whom) καὶ (also) τὴν (-) προσαγωγὴν (access) ἐσχήκαμεν (we have) τῇ (by the) πίστει (faith) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) χάριν (grace) ταύτην (this) ἐν (in) ᾗ (which) ἑστήκαμεν (we stand); καὶ (and) καυχώμεθα (we boast) ἐπ’ (in) ἐλπίδι (hope) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

²⁰ καλῶς (Rightly so); τῇ (by the) ἀπιστίᾳ (unbelief) ἐξεκλάσθησαν (they were broken off); σὺ (you) δὲ (however) τῇ (-) πίστει (by faith) ἕστηκας (stand). μὴ (Not) ὑψηλὰ (high) φρόνει (be minded), ἀλλὰ (but) φοβοῦ (be afraid).

⁵ Τί (Who) οὖν (then) ἐστιν (is) Ἀπολλῶς (Apollos)? τί (Who) δέ (now) ἐστιν (is) Παῦλος (Paul)? διάκονοι (Servants) δι’ (through) ὧν (whom) ἐπιστεύσατε (you believed), καὶ (also) ἑκάστῳ (to each) ὡς (as) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) ἔδωκεν (has given)?

¹ Γνωρίζω (I make known) δὲ (now) ὑμῖν (to you), ἀδελφοί (brothers), τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) ὃ (that) εὐηγγελισάμην (I proclaimed) ὑμῖν (to you), ὃ (which) καὶ (also) παρελάβετε (you received), ἐν (in) ᾧ (which) καὶ (also) ἑστήκατε (you stand),

⁵ Οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ἑαυτοὺς (ourselves) κηρύσσομεν (do we proclaim), ἀλλὰ (but) Χριστὸν (Christ) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) Κύριον (Lord); ἑαυτοὺς (ourselves) δὲ (now), δούλους (servants) ὑμῶν (of you), διὰ (for the sake of) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus).

⁷ διὰ (by) πίστεως (faith) γὰρ (for) περιπατοῦμεν (we walk), οὐ (not) διὰ (by) εἴδους (sight).

¹⁴ στῆτε (Stand) οὖν (therefore), περιζωσάμενοι (having girded) τὴν (the) ὀσφὺν (loins) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐν (with) ἀληθείᾳ (truth), καὶ (and) ἐνδυσάμενοι (having put on) τὸν (the) θώρακα (breastplate) τῆς (-) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness), ¹⁵ καὶ (and) ὑποδησάμενοι (having shod) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) ἐν (with) ἑτοιμασίᾳ (the readiness) τοῦ (of the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel) τῆς (-) εἰρήνης (of peace); ¹⁶ ἐν (besides) πᾶσιν (all), ἀναλαβόντες (having taken up) τὸν (the) θυρεὸν (shield) τῆς (-) πίστεως (of faith), ἐν (with) ᾧ (which) δυνήσεσθε (you will be able) πάντα (all) τὰ (the) βέλη (arrows) τοῦ (of the) πονηροῦ (evil one) τὰ (-) πεπυρωμένα (flaming) σβέσαι (to quench).

²⁴ δοῦλον (The bond-servant) δὲ (now) Κυρίου (of the Lord), οὐ (not) δεῖ (it behooves) μάχεσθαι (to quarrel), ἀλλὰ (but) ἤπιον (gentle) εἶναι (to be) πρὸς (toward) πάντας (all), διδακτικόν (able to teach), ἀνεξίκακον (forbearing), ²⁵ ἐν (in) πραΰτητι (gentleness) παιδεύοντα (disciplining) τοὺς (those) ἀντιδιατιθεμένους (opposing), μή‿ (lest) ποτε (ever) δώῃ (may give) αὐτοῖς (them) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) μετάνοιαν (repentance), εἰς (unto) ἐπίγνωσιν (a knowledge) ἀληθείας (of the truth), ²⁶ καὶ (and) ἀνανήψωσιν (they might come to their senses) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) τοῦ (of the) διαβόλου (devil) παγίδος (snare), ἐζωγρημένοι (having been captured) ὑπ’ (by) αὐτοῦ (him) εἰς (for) τὸ (-) ἐκείνου (his) θέλημα (will).

³ μηδ’ (not) ὡς (as) κατακυριεύοντες (exercising lordship over) τῶν (-) κλήρων (those in your charge), ἀλλὰ (but) τύποι (examples) γινόμενοι (being) τοῦ (to the) ποιμνίου (flock).

⁸ Νήψατε (Be sober-minded); γρηγορήσατε (watch). ὁ (The) ἀντίδικος (adversary) ὑμῶν (of You), διάβολος (the devil), ὡς (as) λέων (a lion) ὠρυόμενος (roaring) περιπατεῖ (prowls about), ζητῶν (seeking) τινα (whom) καταπιεῖν (to devour), ⁹ ᾧ (whom) ἀντίστητε (you should resist), στερεοὶ (firm) τῇ (in the) πίστει (faith), εἰδότες (knowing) τὰ (the) αὐτὰ (same) τῶν (-) παθημάτων (sufferings) τῇ (-) ἐν (throughout) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world) ὑμῶν (in your) ἀδελφότητι (brotherhood) ἐπιτελεῖσθαι (to be accomplished).
