²² Ἐπειδὴ (Seeing that) καὶ (both) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) σημεῖα (signs) αἰτοῦσιν (ask for), καὶ (and) Ἕλληνες (Greeks) σοφίαν (wisdom) ζητοῦσιν (seek),

³⁸ Τότε (Then) ἀπεκρίθησαν (answered) αὐτῷ (him) τινες (some) τῶν (of the) γραμματέων (scribes) καὶ (and) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees), λέγοντες (saying), “Διδάσκαλε (Teacher), θέλομεν (we wish) ἀπὸ (from) σοῦ (You) σημεῖον (a sign) ἰδεῖν (to see).” ³⁹ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Γενεὰ (A generation) πονηρὰ (evil) καὶ (and) μοιχαλὶς (adulterous) σημεῖον (a sign) ἐπιζητεῖ (seeks for), καὶ (and) σημεῖον (a sign) οὐ (not) δοθήσεται (will be given) αὐτῇ (to it), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) τὸ (the) σημεῖον (sign) Ἰωνᾶ (of Jonah) τοῦ (the) προφήτου (prophet).

¹ Καὶ (And) προσελθόντες (having approached), οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) καὶ (and) Σαδδουκαῖοι (Sadducees), πειράζοντες (testing), ἐπηρώτησαν (asked) αὐτὸν (Him) σημεῖον (a sign) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (-) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) ἐπιδεῖξαι (to show) αὐτοῖς (them). ² Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ὀψίας (Evening) γενομένης (having come), λέγετε (you say), ‘Εὐδία (Fair weather); πυρράζει (is red) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) οὐρανός (sky).’ ³ καὶ (And) πρωΐ (in the morning), ‘Σήμερον (Today) χειμών (a storm); πυρράζει (is red) γὰρ (for) στυγνάζων (being overcast) ὁ (the) οὐρανός (sky).’ τὸ (The) μὲν (indeed) πρόσωπον (appearance) τοῦ (of the) οὐρανοῦ (sky) γινώσκετε (you know how) διακρίνειν (to discern), τὰ (-) δὲ (but) σημεῖα (the signs) τῶν (of the) καιρῶν (times), οὐ (not) δύνασθε (you are able)! ⁴ γενεὰ (A generation) πονηρὰ (evil) καὶ (and) μοιχαλὶς (adulterous), σημεῖον (a sign) ἐπιζητεῖ (seeks), καὶ (and) σημεῖον (a sign) οὐ (not) δοθήσεται (will be given) αὐτῇ (to it), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) τὸ (the) σημεῖον (sign) Ἰωνᾶ (of Jonah).” καὶ (And) καταλιπὼν (having left) αὐτοὺς (them), ἀπῆλθεν (He went away).

¹¹ Καὶ (And) ἐξῆλθον (went out) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) καὶ (and) ἤρξαντο (began) συζητεῖν (to dispute with) αὐτῷ (Him), ζητοῦντες (seeking) παρ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (Him) σημεῖον (a sign) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (-) οὐρανοῦ (heaven), πειράζοντες (testing) αὐτόν (Him).

¹⁶ ἕτεροι (Others) δὲ (now), πειράζοντες (testing), σημεῖον (a sign) ἐξ (from) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) ἐζήτουν (were seeking) παρ’ (from) αὐτοῦ (Him).

²⁰ εἰ (If) δὲ (however) ἐν (by) δακτύλῳ (the finger) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐγὼ (I) ἐκβάλλω (cast out) τὰ (the) δαιμόνια (demons), ἄρα (then) ἔφθασεν (has come) ἐφ’ (upon) ὑμᾶς (you) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

¹⁸ Ἀπεκρίθησαν (Answered) οὖν (therefore) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) καὶ (and) εἶπαν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Τί (What) σημεῖον (sign) δεικνύεις (show You) ἡμῖν (to us), ὅτι (that) ταῦτα (these things) ποιεῖς (You do)?”

²⁸ Ἀφῆκεν (Left) οὖν (then) τὴν (the) ὑδρίαν (water pot) αὐτῆς (of her) ἡ (the) γυνὴ (woman), καὶ (and) ἀπῆλθεν (went away) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) πόλιν (city), καὶ (and) λέγει (says) τοῖς (to the) ἀνθρώποις (men),

¹⁸ Τινὲς (Some) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) τῶν (of the) Ἐπικουρείων* (Epicureans) καὶ (and) Στοϊκῶν (Stoics), φιλοσόφων (philosophers), συνέβαλλον (encountered) αὐτῷ (him). καί (And) τινες (some) ἔλεγον (were saying), “Τί (What) ἂν (-) θέλοι (may desire) ὁ (of the) σπερμολόγος (babbler) οὗτος (this) λέγειν (to say)?” οἱ (Others) δέ (however), “Ξένων (Of foreign) δαιμονίων (gods) δοκεῖ (he seems) καταγγελεὺς (a proclaimer) εἶναι (to be),” ὅτι (because) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) ἀνάστασιν (resurrection) εὐηγγελίζετο (he was proclaiming the gospel of). ¹⁹ Ἐπιλαβόμενοί (Having taken hold) τε* (also) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἐπὶ (to) τὸν (the) Ἄρειον (Ares) πάγον (Hill) ἤγαγον (they brought him), λέγοντες (saying), “Δυνάμεθα (Are we able) γνῶναι (to know) τίς (what is) ἡ (the) καινὴ (new) αὕτη (this), ἡ (which) ὑπὸ (by) σοῦ (you) λαλουμένη (is spoken), διδαχή (teaching)? ²⁰ ξενίζοντα (Strange things) γάρ (for) τινα (some) εἰσφέρεις (you are bringing) εἰς (to) τὰς (the) ἀκοὰς (ears) ἡμῶν (of us). βουλόμεθα (We resolve) οὖν (therefore) γνῶναι (to know) τίνα (what) θέλει (wish) ταῦτα (these things) εἶναι (to be).” ²¹ Ἀθηναῖοι (The Athenians) δὲ (now) πάντες (all), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἐπιδημοῦντες (visiting) ξένοι (strangers), εἰς (in) οὐδὲν (nothing) ἕτερον (else) ηὐκαίρουν (spent their time) ἢ (than) λέγειν (to tell) τι (something) ἢ (and) ἀκούειν (to hear) τι (something) καινότερον (new).
