¹ Διοδεύσαντες (Having passed through) δὲ (then) τὴν (-) Ἀμφίπολιν (Amphipolis) καὶ (and) τὴν (-) Ἀπολλωνίαν (Apollonia), ἦλθον (they came) εἰς (to) Θεσσαλονίκην (Thessalonica), ὅπου (where) ἦν (was) συναγωγὴ (a synagogue) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews).

¹ Μετὰ (And after) ταῦτα (these things), χωρισθεὶς (having departed) ἐκ (from) τῶν (-) Ἀθηνῶν (Athens), ἦλθεν (he came) εἰς (to) Κόρινθον (Corinth).

⁶ ἀντιτασσομένων (Opposing) δὲ (however) αὐτῶν (of them) καὶ (and) βλασφημούντων (reviling him), ἐκτιναξάμενος (having shaken out) τὰ (the) ἱμάτια (garments), εἶπεν (he said) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Τὸ (The) αἷμα (blood) ὑμῶν (of You) ἐπὶ (be upon) τὴν (the) κεφαλὴν (head) ὑμῶν (of you); καθαρὸς (clean) ἐγώ (I am). ἀπὸ (From) τοῦ (-) νῦν (now on), εἰς (to) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles) πορεύσομαι (I will go).”

¹⁰ Ἡμεῖς (We) μωροὶ (are fools) διὰ (on account of) Χριστόν (Christ), ὑμεῖς (you) δὲ (however) φρόνιμοι (wise) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ); ἡμεῖς (we) ἀσθενεῖς (weak), ὑμεῖς (you) δὲ (however) ἰσχυροί (strong); ὑμεῖς (You) ἔνδοξοι (honored), ἡμεῖς (we) δὲ (however) ἄτιμοι (without honor). ¹¹ ἄχρι (As far as) τῆς (the) ἄρτι (present) ὥρας (hour), καὶ (both) πεινῶμεν (we hunger) καὶ (and) διψῶμεν (thirst), καὶ (and) γυμνιτεύομεν (are poorly clad), καὶ (and) κολαφιζόμεθα (are buffeted), καὶ (and) ἀστατοῦμεν (wander homeless), ¹² καὶ (and) κοπιῶμεν (we toil), ἐργαζόμενοι (working) ταῖς (with our) ἰδίαις (own) χερσίν (hands). λοιδορούμενοι (Being reviled), εὐλογοῦμεν (we bless); διωκόμενοι (being persecuted), ἀνεχόμεθα (we endure); ¹³ δυσφημούμενοι (being slandered), παρακαλοῦμεν (we entreat). ὡς (As) περικαθάρματα (the scum) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (earth) ἐγενήθημεν (we have become), πάντων (of all the) περίψημα (refuse), ἕως (until) ἄρτι (now).

¹ Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), ἔχοντες (having) τὴν (the) διακονίαν (ministry) ταύτην (this), καθὼς (as) ἠλεήθημεν (we received mercy), οὐκ (not) ἐγκακοῦμεν (we lose heart).

⁷ Ἔχομεν (We have) δὲ (now) τὸν (the) θησαυρὸν (treasure) τοῦτον (this) ἐν (in) ὀστρακίνοις (earthen) σκεύεσιν (vessels), ἵνα (that) ἡ (the) ὑπερβολὴ (surpassingness) τῆς (of the) δυνάμεως (power) ᾖ (may be) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (from God), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ἐξ (from) ἡμῶν (us), ⁸ ἐν (in) παντὶ (every way) θλιβόμενοι (being hard pressed), ἀλλ’ (but) οὐ (not) στενοχωρούμενοι (being crushed); ἀπορούμενοι (being perplexed), ἀλλ’ (but) οὐκ (not) ἐξαπορούμενοι (despairing); ⁹ διωκόμενοι (being persecuted), ἀλλ’ (but) οὐκ (not) ἐγκαταλειπόμενοι (being forsaken); καταβαλλόμενοι (being struck down), ἀλλ’ (but) οὐκ (not) ἀπολλύμενοι (being destroyed); ¹⁰ πάντοτε (always) τὴν (the) νέκρωσιν (death) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) ἐν (in) τῷ (our) σώματι (body) περιφέροντες (carrying around), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (also) ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) σώματι (body) ἡμῶν (of us) φανερωθῇ (should be manifested); ¹¹ ἀεὶ (always) γὰρ (for) ἡμεῖς (we) οἱ (the) ζῶντες (living) εἰς (to) θάνατον (death) παραδιδόμεθα (are being delivered) διὰ (on account of) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (also) ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) φανερωθῇ (may be manifested) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) θνητῇ (mortal) σαρκὶ (flesh) ἡμῶν (of us). ¹² ὥστε (So then), ὁ (-) θάνατος (death) ἐν (in) ἡμῖν (us) ἐνεργεῖται (works), ἡ (-) δὲ (but) ζωὴ (life) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you).

¹⁶ Διὸ (Therefore) οὐκ (not) ἐγκακοῦμεν (we lose heart); ἀλλ’ (but) εἰ (if) καὶ (indeed) ὁ (the) ἔξω (outward) ἡμῶν (of us) ἄνθρωπος (man) διαφθείρεται (is being brought to decay), ἀλλ’ (yet) ὁ (the) ἔσω (inner) ἡμῶν (of us) ἀνακαινοῦται (is being renewed) ἡμέρᾳ (day) καὶ (and) ἡμέρᾳ (day).

⁴ ἀλλ’ (rather), ἐν (in) παντὶ (everything), συνιστάνοντες (we are commending) ἑαυτοὺς (ourselves) ὡς (as) Θεοῦ (God’s) διάκονοι (servants), ἐν (in) ὑπομονῇ (endurance) πολλῇ (great), ἐν (in) θλίψεσιν (tribulations), ἐν (in) ἀνάγκαις (hardships), ἐν (in) στενοχωρίαις (distresses),

⁵ Καὶ (And) γὰρ (for) ἐλθόντων (having come) ἡμῶν (of us) εἰς (into) Μακεδονίαν (Macedonia), οὐδεμίαν (no) ἔσχηκεν (had) ἄνεσιν (rest) ἡ (the) σὰρξ (flesh) ἡμῶν (of us); ἀλλ’ (but) ἐν (in) παντὶ (every way) θλιβόμενοι (we are being pressed): ἔξωθεν (on the outside) μάχαι (conflicts), ἔσωθεν (within) φόβοι (fears).

¹ Αὐτὸς (Myself) δὲ (now) ἐγὼ (I), Παῦλος (Paul), παρακαλῶ (exhort) ὑμᾶς (you) διὰ (by) τῆς (the) πραΰτητος (meekness) καὶ (and) ἐπιεικείας (gentleness) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), ὃς (who) κατὰ (as to) πρόσωπον (appearance) μὲν (indeed) ταπεινὸς (am humble) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you), ἀπὼν (being absent) δὲ (however) θαρρῶ (am bold) εἰς (toward) ὑμᾶς (you).

¹⁰ “Ὅτι (For) Αἱ (the) ἐπιστολαὶ (letters),” μέν (indeed) φησίν (they say), “Βαρεῖαι (are weighty) καὶ (and) ἰσχυραί (strong), ἡ (-) δὲ (but) παρουσία (the presence) τοῦ (of the) σώματος (body) ἀσθενὴς (weak), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) λόγος (speech) ἐξουθενημένος (having been ignored).”

²⁹ τίς (Who) ἀσθενεῖ (is weak), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἀσθενῶ (I am weak)? τίς (Who) σκανδαλίζεται (is led into sin), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἐγὼ (I) πυροῦμαι (do burn inwardly)? ³⁰ Εἰ (If) καυχᾶσθαι (to boast) δεῖ (it behooves me), τὰ (in the things) τῆς (of the) ἀσθενείας (weakness) μου (of me) καυχήσομαι (I will boast).

⁵ Ὑπὲρ (Concerning) τοῦ (-) τοιούτου (such a man) καυχήσομαι (I will boast); ὑπὲρ (concerning) δὲ (however) ἐμαυτοῦ (myself), οὐ (not) καυχήσομαι (I will boast), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἀσθενείαις (weaknesses). ⁶ ἐὰν (If) γὰρ (for) θελήσω (I should desire) καυχήσασθαι (to boast), οὐκ (not) ἔσομαι (I will be) ἄφρων (a fool); ἀλήθειαν (the truth) γὰρ (for) ἐρῶ (I will be speaking). φείδομαι (I refrain) δέ (however), μή (lest) τις (anyone) εἰς (to) ἐμὲ (me) λογίσηται (should credit) ὑπὲρ (more than) ὃ (what) βλέπει (he sees) με (in me), ἢ (or) ἀκούει (hears) ‹τι› (anyone) ἐξ (of) ἐμοῦ (me), ⁷ καὶ (and) τῇ (the) ὑπερβολῇ (surpassingness) τῶν (of the) ἀποκαλύψεων (revelations). Διὸ (Therefore) ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) ὑπεραίρωμαι (I should become conceited), ἐδόθη (was given) μοι (to me) σκόλοψ (a thorn) τῇ (in my) σαρκί (flesh), ἄγγελος (a messenger) Σατανᾶ (of Satan), ἵνα (that) με (me) κολαφίζῃ (he might buffet), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) ὑπεραίρωμαι (I should become conceited). ⁸ ὑπὲρ (For) τούτου (this), τρὶς (three times) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) παρεκάλεσα (I begged), ἵνα (that) ἀποστῇ (it might depart) ἀπ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (me). ⁹ καὶ (And) εἴρηκέν (He said) μοι (to me), “Ἀρκεῖ (Suffices) σοι (you) ἡ (the) χάρις (grace) μου (of Me); ἡ (the) γὰρ (for) δύναμις (power) ἐν (in) ἀσθενείᾳ (weakness) τελεῖται (is perfected).” Ἥδιστα (Most gladly) οὖν (therefore) μᾶλλον (rather) καυχήσομαι (will I boast) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἀσθενείαις (weaknesses) ‹μου› (of me), ἵνα (so that) ἐπισκηνώσῃ (may rest) ἐπ’ (upon) ἐμὲ (me) ἡ (the) δύναμις (power) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ). ¹⁰ διὸ (Therefore) εὐδοκῶ (I take pleasure) ἐν (in) ἀσθενείαις (weaknesses), ἐν (in) ὕβρεσιν (insults), ἐν (in) ἀνάγκαις (hardships), ἐν (in) διωγμοῖς (persecutions), καὶ (and) στενοχωρίαις (difficulties) ὑπὲρ (for) Χριστοῦ (Christ); ὅταν (when) γὰρ (for) ἀσθενῶ (I might be weak), τότε (then) δυνατός (strong) εἰμι (I am).

⁴ καὶ (And) γὰρ (for) ἐσταυρώθη (He was crucified) ἐξ (in) ἀσθενείας (weakness), ἀλλὰ (yet) ζῇ (He lives) ἐκ (by) δυνάμεως (power) Θεοῦ (God’s). καὶ (Also) γὰρ (for) ἡμεῖς (we) ἀσθενοῦμεν (are weak) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him), ἀλλὰ (but) ζήσομεν (we will live) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him) ἐκ (by) δυνάμεως (power) Θεοῦ (God’s) εἰς (toward) ὑμᾶς (you).

⁹ χαίρομεν (We rejoice) γὰρ (for) ὅταν (when) ἡμεῖς (we) ἀσθενῶμεν (might be weak), ὑμεῖς (you) δὲ (however) δυνατοὶ (strong) ἦτε (might be). τοῦτο (But this) καὶ (also): εὐχόμεθα (We pray for) τὴν (the) ὑμῶν (of you) κατάρτισιν (perfection).

¹³ Οἴδατε (You know) δὲ (now) ὅτι (that) δι’ (in) ἀσθένειαν (weakness) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh) εὐηγγελισάμην (I proclaimed the gospel) ὑμῖν (to you) τὸ (at the) πρότερον (first); ¹⁴ καὶ (and) τὸν (the) πειρασμὸν (test) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σαρκί (flesh) μου (of me), οὐκ (not) ἐξουθενήσατε (you did despise me), οὐδὲ (nor) ἐξεπτύσατε (reject me with contempt); ἀλλὰ (but) ὡς (as) ἄγγελον (an angel) Θεοῦ (of God), ἐδέξασθέ (you received) με (me) ὡς (even as) Χριστὸν (Christ) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus).
