¹⁸ Οἴδαμεν (We know) ὅτι (that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) γεγεννημένος (having been born) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) οὐχ (not) ἁμαρτάνει (continues to sin), ἀλλ’ (but) ὁ (the One) γεννηθεὶς (having been begotten) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) τηρεῖ (protects) αὐτόν (him), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) πονηρὸς (evil one) οὐχ (not) ἅπτεται (does touch) αὐτοῦ (him).

¹³ οἳ (who) οὐκ (not) ἐξ (of) αἱμάτων (blood), οὐδὲ (nor) ἐκ (of) θελήματος (will) σαρκὸς (of flesh), οὐδὲ (nor) ἐκ (of) θελήματος (will) ἀνδρὸς (of man), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐκ (of) Θεοῦ (God) ἐγεννήθησαν (were born).

² οὗτος (He) ἦλθεν (came) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him) νυκτὸς (by night) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Ῥαββί (Rabbi), οἴδαμεν (we know) ὅτι (that) ἀπὸ (from) Θεοῦ (God) ἐλήλυθας (You have come), διδάσκαλος (a teacher); οὐδεὶς (no one) γὰρ (for) δύναται (is able) ταῦτα (these) τὰ (-) σημεῖα (signs) ποιεῖν (to do) ἃ (that) σὺ (You) ποιεῖς (do), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) ᾖ (should be) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (him).” ³ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly) λέγω (I say) σοι (to you), ἐὰν (if) μή (not) τις (anyone) γεννηθῇ (be born) ἄνωθεν (from above), οὐ (not) δύναται (he is able) ἰδεῖν (to see) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).” ⁴ Λέγει (Says) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him) ὁ (-) Νικόδημος (Nicodemus), “Πῶς (How) δύναται (is able) ἄνθρωπος (a man) γεννηθῆναι (to be born), γέρων (old) ὤν (being)? μὴ (Not) δύναται (is he able) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) κοιλίαν (womb) τῆς (of the) μητρὸς (mother) αὐτοῦ (of him) δεύτερον (a second time) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter), καὶ (and) γεννηθῆναι (to be born)?” ⁵ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly), λέγω (I say) σοι (to you), ἐὰν (if) μή (not) τις (anyone) γεννηθῇ (be born) ἐξ (of) ὕδατος (water) καὶ (and) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit), οὐ (not) δύναται (he is able) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

³⁰ Οὐκέτι (No longer) πολλὰ (much) λαλήσω (I will speak) μεθ’ (with) ὑμῶν (you); ἔρχεται (comes) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) τοῦ (of this) κόσμου (world) ἄρχων (ruler), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me) οὐκ (not) ἔχει (he has) οὐδέν (nothing);

⁴ μείνατε (Abide) ἐν (in) ἐμοί (Me), κἀγὼ (and I) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you). καθὼς (As) τὸ (the) κλῆμα (branch) οὐ (not) δύναται (is able) καρπὸν (fruit) φέρειν (to bear) ἀφ’ (of) ἑαυτοῦ (itself), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) μένῃ (it abide) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀμπέλῳ (vine), οὕτως (so) οὐδὲ (neither can) ὑμεῖς (you), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me) μένητε (you abide).

⁷ ἐὰν (If) μείνητε (you abide) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) ῥήματά (words) μου (of Me) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) μείνῃ (abide), ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) θέλητε (you wish), αἰτήσασθε (you shall ask), καὶ (and) γενήσεται (it will come to pass) ὑμῖν (to you).

⁹ Καθὼς (As) ἠγάπησέν (has loved) με (Me) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father), κἀγὼ (I also) ὑμᾶς (you) ἠγάπησα (have loved). μείνατε (Abide) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀγάπῃ (love) τῇ (-) ἐμῇ (of Me).

²³ ὃς (who) παραγενόμενος (having come) καὶ (and) ἰδὼν (having seen) τὴν (the) χάριν (grace) τὴν (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God), ἐχάρη (rejoiced) καὶ (and) παρεκάλει (was exhorting) πάντας (all) τῇ (with) προθέσει (resolute purpose) τῆς (-) καρδίας (of heart) προσμένειν (to abide) (ἐν) (in) τῷ (the) Κυρίῳ (Lord).

¹⁸ βουληθεὶς (Having willed it), ἀπεκύησεν (He brought forth) ἡμᾶς (us) λόγῳ (by the word) ἀληθείας (of truth), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) εἶναι (to be) ἡμᾶς (us) ἀπαρχήν (firstfruits) τινα (a certain) τῶν (-) αὐτοῦ (of His) κτισμάτων (creatures).

²⁷ θρησκεία (Religion) καθαρὰ (pure) καὶ (and) ἀμίαντος (undefiled) παρὰ (before) τῷ (the) Θεῷ (God) καὶ (and) Πατρὶ (Father) αὕτη (this) ἐστίν (is), ἐπισκέπτεσθαι (to visit) ὀρφανοὺς (orphans) καὶ (and) χήρας (widows) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) θλίψει (tribulation) αὐτῶν (of them); ἄσπιλον (unstained) ἑαυτὸν (oneself) τηρεῖν (to keep) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world).

²³ ἀναγεγεννημένοι (Having been born again), οὐκ (not) ἐκ (of) σπορᾶς (seed) φθαρτῆς (perishable), ἀλλὰ (but) ἀφθάρτου (of imperishable), διὰ (by) λόγου (the word) ζῶντος (living) Θεοῦ (of God), καὶ (and) μένοντος (abiding),

¹³ Γράφω (I am writing) ὑμῖν (to you), πατέρες (fathers), ὅτι (because) ἐγνώκατε (you have known) τὸν (Him who is) ἀπ’ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning). Γράφω (I am writing) ὑμῖν (to you), νεανίσκοι (young men), ὅτι (because) νενικήκατε (you have overcome) τὸν (the) πονηρόν (evil one). Ἔγραψα (I have written) ὑμῖν (to you), παιδία (little children), ὅτι (because) ἐγνώκατε (you know) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father). ¹⁴ Ἔγραψα (I have written) ὑμῖν (to you), πατέρες (fathers), ὅτι (because) ἐγνώκατε (you know) τὸν (Him who is) ἀπ’ (from) ἀρχῆς (the beginning). Ἔγραψα (I have written) ὑμῖν (to you), νεανίσκοι (young men), ὅτι (because) ἰσχυροί (strong) ἐστε (you are), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) λόγος (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) μένει (abides), καὶ (and) νενικήκατε (you have overcome) τὸν (the) πονηρόν (evil one).

²⁹ Ἐὰν (If) εἰδῆτε (you know) ὅτι (that) δίκαιός (righteous) ἐστιν (He is), γινώσκετε (you know) ὅτι (that) καὶ (also) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ποιῶν (practicing) τὴν (-) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness), ἐξ (of) αὐτοῦ (Him) γεγέννηται (has been begotten).

³ καὶ (And) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ἔχων (having) τὴν (the) ἐλπίδα (hope) ταύτην (this) ἐπ’ (in) αὐτῷ (Him), ἁγνίζει (purifies) ἑαυτὸν (himself), καθὼς (just as) ἐκεῖνος (He) ἁγνός (pure) ἐστιν (is).

⁹ Πᾶς (Anyone) ὁ (-) γεγεννημένος (having been born) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God), ἁμαρτίαν (sin) οὐ (not) ποιεῖ (practices), ὅτι (because) σπέρμα (seed) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him) μένει (abides), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) δύναται (he is able) ἁμαρτάνειν (to continue sinning), ὅτι (because) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) γεγέννηται (he has been born).

¹² οὐ (not) καθὼς (as) Κάϊν (Cain), ἐκ (who of) τοῦ (the) πονηροῦ (evil one) ἦν (was) καὶ (and) ἔσφαξεν (slew) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him). καὶ (And) χάριν (because of) τίνος (what) ἔσφαξεν (he slayed) αὐτόν (him)? ὅτι (Because) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) αὐτοῦ (of him) πονηρὰ (evil) ἦν (were), τὰ (those) δὲ (however) τοῦ (of the) ἀδελφοῦ (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), δίκαια (righteous).

⁶ ἡμεῖς (We) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) ἐσμεν (are). ὁ (The one) γινώσκων (knowing) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) ἀκούει (listens to) ἡμῶν (us). ὃς (He who) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God), οὐκ (not) ἀκούει (listens to) ἡμῶν (us). ἐκ (By) τούτου (this) γινώσκομεν (we know) τὸ (the) πνεῦμα (Spirit) τῆς (-) ἀληθείας (of truth) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) πνεῦμα (spirit) τῆς (-) πλάνης (of falsehood).

¹ Πᾶς (Everyone) ὁ (-) πιστεύων (believing) ὅτι (that) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Χριστὸς (Christ), ἐκ (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) γεγέννηται (has been born), καὶ (and) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ἀγαπῶν (loving) τὸν (the One) γεννήσαντα (having begotten Him), ἀγαπᾷ (loves) ‹καὶ› (also) τὸν (the one) γεγεννημένον (having been begotten) ἐξ (from) αὐτοῦ (Him).

⁴ ὅτι (For) πᾶν (everyone) τὸ (-) γεγεννημένον (having been born) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) νικᾷ (overcomes) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world); καὶ (and) αὕτη (this) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) νίκη (victory) ἡ (-) νικήσασα (having overcome) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world): ἡ (the) πίστις (faith) ἡμῶν (of us).

²¹ Τεκνία (Little children), φυλάξατε (keep) ἑαυτὰ (yourselves) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (-) εἰδώλων (idols).

²¹ ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves) ἐν (in) ἀγάπῃ (the love) Θεοῦ (of God) τηρήσατε (keep), προσδεχόμενοι (awaiting) τὸ (the) ἔλεος (mercy) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), εἰς (unto) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal).

²⁴ Τῷ (To Him) δὲ (now) δυναμένῳ (being able) φυλάξαι (to keep) ὑμᾶς (you) ἀπταίστους (from stumbling) καὶ (and) στῆσαι (to present you) κατενώπιον (in the presence of) τῆς (the) δόξης (glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἀμώμους (blameless) ἐν (with) ἀγαλλιάσει (exultation) —

¹³ Οἶδα (I know) ποῦ (where) κατοικεῖς (you dwell), ὅπου (where) ὁ (the) θρόνος (throne) τοῦ (-) Σατανᾶ (of Satan is); καὶ (and) κρατεῖς (you hold fast to) τὸ (the) ὄνομά (name) μου (of Me), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἠρνήσω (you have denied) τὴν (the) πίστιν (faith) μου (of Me), καὶ (even) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) Ἀντιπᾶς (of Antipas), ὁ (the) μάρτυς (witness) μου (of Me), ὁ (the) πιστός (faithful one) μου (of Me) ὃς (who) ἀπεκτάνθη (was killed) παρ’ (among) ὑμῖν (you), ὅπου (where) ὁ (-) Σατανᾶς (Satan) κατοικεῖ (dwells).

⁸ Οἶδά (I know) σου (your) τὰ (-) ἔργα (deeds). ἰδοὺ (Behold), δέδωκα (I have set) ἐνώπιόν (before) σου (you) θύραν (a door) ἠνεῳγμένην (having been opened), ἣν (which) οὐδεὶς (no one) δύναται (is able) κλεῖσαι (to shut) αὐτήν (it), ὅτι (because) μικρὰν (little) ἔχεις (you have) δύναμιν (power), καὶ (and yet) ἐτήρησάς (you have kept) μου (My) τὸν (-) λόγον (word) καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἠρνήσω (have denied) τὸ (the) ὄνομά (name) μου (of Me). ⁹ ἰδοὺ (Behold), διδῶ (I give) ἐκ (those from) τῆς (the) συναγωγῆς (synagogue) τοῦ (-) Σατανᾶ (of Satan)— τῶν (those) λεγόντων (declaring) ἑαυτοὺς (themselves) Ἰουδαίους (Jews) εἶναι (to be), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) εἰσὶν (are), ἀλλὰ (but) ψεύδονται (they lie)— ἰδοὺ (behold), ποιήσω (I will cause) αὐτοὺς (them) ἵνα (that) ἥξουσιν (they will come) καὶ (and) προσκυνήσουσιν (will worship) ἐνώπιον (before) τῶν (the) ποδῶν (feet) σου (of you), καὶ (and) γνῶσιν (they shall know) ὅτι (that) ἐγὼ (I) ἠγάπησά (have loved) σε (you). ¹⁰ Ὅτι (Because) ἐτήρησας (you have kept) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τῆς (of the) ὑπομονῆς (patient endurance) μου (of Me), κἀγώ (I also) σε (you) τηρήσω (will keep) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) ὥρας (hour) τοῦ (of the) πειρασμοῦ (trial) τῆς (-) μελλούσης (being about) ἔρχεσθαι (to come) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) οἰκουμένης (inhabited world) ὅλης (whole), πειράσαι (to try) τοὺς (those) κατοικοῦντας (dwelling) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth).
