καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) πιστεύων (believing) ἐπ’ (on) αὐτῷ (Him), οὐ (no) μὴ (not) καταισχυνθῇ (shall be put to shame).” ⁷ Ὑμῖν (To you) οὖν (therefore is) ἡ (the) τιμὴ (preciousness), τοῖς (-) πιστεύουσιν (believing); οἱ (those) οὐκ (not) ἠλεημένοι (having received mercy), νῦν (now) δὲ (however) ἐλεηθέντες (having received mercy). ¹¹ Ἀγαπητοί (Beloved), παρακαλῶ (I exhort you) ὡς (as) παροίκους (aliens) καὶ (and) παρεπιδήμους (sojourners), ἀπέχεσθαι (to abstain) τῶν (from) σαρκικῶν (fleshly) ἐπιθυμιῶν (desires), αἵτινες (which) στρατεύονται (war) κατὰ (against) τῆς (the) ψυχῆς (soul), ¹² τὴν (the) ἀναστροφὴν (conduct) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐν (among) τοῖς (the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles) ἔχοντες (keeping) καλήν (honorable), ἵνα (so that) ἐν (wherein) ᾧ (which) καταλαλοῦσιν (they speak against) ὑμῶν (you) ὡς (as) κακοποιῶν (evildoers), ἐκ (through) τῶν (the) καλῶν (good) ἔργων (deeds) ἐποπτεύοντες (having witnessed), δοξάσωσιν (they may glorify) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) ἐν (in) ἡμέρᾳ (the day) ἐπισκοπῆς (of visitation). ¹³ Ὑποτάγητε (Be in subjection) πάσῃ (to every) ἀνθρωπίνῃ (human) κτίσει (institution) διὰ (for the sake of) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord), εἴτε (whether) βασιλεῖ (to the king) ὡς (as) ὑπερέχοντι (being supreme), ¹⁴ εἴτε (or) ἡγεμόσιν (to governors), ὡς (as) δι’ (by) αὐτοῦ (him) πεμπομένοις (being sent) εἰς (for) ἐκδίκησιν (vengeance) κακοποιῶν (to evildoers), ἔπαινον (praise) δὲ (then) ἀγαθοποιῶν (to well-doers), ¹⁵ ὅτι (because) οὕτως (this) ἐστὶν (is) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἀγαθοποιοῦντας (doing good), φιμοῦν (to put to silence) τὴν (the) τῶν (-) ἀφρόνων (of foolish) ἀνθρώπων (men) ἀγνωσίαν (ignorance), ¹⁶ ὡς (as) ἐλεύθεροι (free), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ὡς (as) ἐπικάλυμμα (a cover-up) ἔχοντες (having) τῆς (for) κακίας (evil) τὴν (the) ἐλευθερίαν (freedom), ἀλλ’ (but) ὡς (as) Θεοῦ (of God) δοῦλοι (servants). ¹⁷ Πάντας (Everyone) τιμήσατε (honor): τὴν (The) ἀδελφότητα (brotherhood) ἀγαπᾶτε (love), τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) φοβεῖσθε (fear), τὸν (the) βασιλέα (king) τιμᾶτε (honor). ¹⁸ Οἱ (-) οἰκέται (Servants), ὑποτασσόμενοι (be subject) ἐν (with) παντὶ (all) φόβῳ (fear) τοῖς (to) δεσπόταις (masters), οὐ (not) μόνον (only) τοῖς (to the) ἀγαθοῖς (good) καὶ (and) ἐπιεικέσιν (gentle), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) τοῖς (to the) σκολιοῖς (unreasonable). ¹⁹ τοῦτο (This) γὰρ (for) χάρις (is acceptable), εἰ (if) διὰ (for sake of) συνείδησιν (conscience) Θεοῦ (toward God), ὑποφέρει (endures) τις (anyone) λύπας (griefs), πάσχων (suffering) ἀδίκως (unjustly). ²⁰ ποῖον (What kind of) γὰρ (for) κλέος (credit is it), εἰ (if) ἁμαρτάνοντες (sinning) καὶ (and) κολαφιζόμενοι (being struck) ὑπομενεῖτε (you shall endure)? ἀλλ’ (But) εἰ (if) ἀγαθοποιοῦντες (doing good) καὶ (and) πάσχοντες (suffering) ὑπομενεῖτε (you shall endure), τοῦτο (this is) χάρις (commendable) παρὰ (before) Θεῷ (God). ²¹ Εἰς (To this) τοῦτο (hereunto) γὰρ (for) ἐκλήθητε (you have been called), ὅτι (because) καὶ (also) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἔπαθεν (suffered) ὑπὲρ (for) ὑμῶν (you), ὑμῖν (you) ὑπολιμπάνων (leaving) ὑπογραμμὸν (an example) ἵνα (that) ἐπακολουθήσητε (you should follow after) τοῖς (the) ἴχνεσιν (steps) αὐτοῦ (of Him): ²² “Ὃς (Who) ἁμαρτίαν (sin) οὐκ (not) ἐποίησεν (committed), οὐδὲ (neither) εὑρέθη (was found) δόλος (trickery) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) στόματι (mouth) αὐτοῦ (of Him).” ²³ ὃς (Who) λοιδορούμενος (being reviled), οὐκ (not) ἀντελοιδόρει (reviled in return); πάσχων (suffering) οὐκ (not) ἠπείλει (threatened); παρεδίδου (He gave Himself over) δὲ (however) τῷ (to Him) κρίνοντι (judging) δικαίως (justly). ²⁴ ὃς (Who) τὰς (the) ἁμαρτίας (sins) ἡμῶν (of us) αὐτὸς (Himself) ἀνήνεγκεν (bore) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) σώματι (body) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐπὶ (on) τὸ (the) ξύλον (tree), ἵνα (so that), ταῖς (-) ἁμαρτίαις (to sins) ἀπογενόμενοι (having been dead), τῇ (-) δικαιοσύνῃ (to righteousness) ζήσωμεν (we might live). “Οὗ (By whose) τῷ (-) μώλωπι (wounds) ἰάθητε (you have been healed).” ²⁵ Ἦτε (You were) γὰρ (for) ὡς (like) πρόβατα (sheep) πλανώμενοι (going astray), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐπεστράφητε (you have returned) νῦν (now) ἐπὶ (to) τὸν (the) Ποιμένα (Shepherd) καὶ (and) Ἐπίσκοπον (Overseer) τῶν (of the) ψυχῶν (souls) ὑμῶν (of you).

⁵ ὑποκριτά (Hypocrite)! ἔκβαλε (Cast out) πρῶτον (first) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) ὀφθαλμοῦ (eye) σοῦ (of you) τὴν (the) δοκόν (beam), καὶ (and) τότε (then) διαβλέψεις (you will see clearly) ἐκβαλεῖν (to cast out) τὸ (the) κάρφος (splinter) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) ὀφθαλμοῦ (eye) τοῦ (of the) ἀδελφοῦ (brother) σου (of you).

⁷ ὑποκριταί (Hypocrites)! καλῶς (Rightly) ἐπροφήτευσεν (prophesied) περὶ (concerning) ὑμῶν (you) Ἠσαΐας (Isaiah), λέγων (saying),

²⁸ οὕτως (Thus) καὶ (also), ὑμεῖς (you) ἔξωθεν (outwardly) μὲν (indeed) φαίνεσθε (appear) τοῖς (-) ἀνθρώποις (to men) δίκαιοι (righteous), ἔσωθεν (inwardly) δέ (however) ἐστε (you are) μεστοὶ (full) ὑποκρίσεως (of hypocrisy) καὶ (and) ἀνομίας (lawlessness).

⁵¹ καὶ (and) διχοτομήσει (will cut in pieces) αὐτὸν (him), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) μέρος (place) αὐτοῦ (of him) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) ὑποκριτῶν (hypocrites) θήσει (will appoint); ἐκεῖ (there) ἔσται (will be) ὁ (the) κλαυθμὸς (weeping) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) βρυγμὸς (gnashing) τῶν (of) ὀδόντων (teeth).

¹⁵ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἰδὼς (knowing) αὐτῶν (of them) τὴν (the) ὑπόκρισιν (hypocrisy), εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Τί (Why) με (Me) πειράζετε (do you test)? φέρετέ (Bring) μοι (Me) δηνάριον (a denarius), ἵνα (that) ἴδω (I might see it).”

⁴² πῶς (How) δύνασαι (are you able) λέγειν (to say) τῷ (to) ἀδελφῷ (brother) σου (of you), ‘Ἀδελφέ (Brother), ἄφες (let that) ἐκβάλω (I might cast out) τὸ (the) κάρφος (splinter) τὸ (that is) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀφθαλμῷ (eye) σου (of you),’ αὐτὸς (yourself) τὴν (the) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀφθαλμῷ (eye) σοῦ (of you) δοκὸν (beam) οὐ (not) βλέπων (seeing)? ὑποκριτά (Hypocrite), ἔκβαλε (cast out) πρῶτον (first) τὴν (the) δοκὸν (beam) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) ὀφθαλμοῦ (eye) σοῦ (of you), καὶ (and) τότε (then) διαβλέψεις (you will see clearly) τὸ (the) κάρφος (splinter) τὸ (-) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀφθαλμῷ (eye) τοῦ (of the) ἀδελφοῦ (brother) σου (of you) ἐκβαλεῖν (to cast out).

⁴⁴ οὐαὶ (Woe) ὑμῖν (to you), ὅτι (for) ἐστὲ (you are) ὡς (like) τὰ (-) μνημεῖα (graves) τὰ (-) ἄδηλα (unmarked), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἄνθρωποι (men) οἱ (-) περιπατοῦντες (walking) ἐπάνω (above) οὐκ (not) οἴδασιν (have known it).”

¹ Ἐν (In) οἷς (these times), ἐπισυναχθεισῶν (having been gathered together) τῶν (the) μυριάδων (myriads) τοῦ (of the) ὄχλου (crowd) ὥστε (so as) καταπατεῖν (to trample upon) ἀλλήλους (one another), ἤρξατο (He began) λέγειν (to say) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him) πρῶτον (first), “Προσέχετε (Take heed) ἑαυτοῖς (to yourselves) ἀπὸ (of) τῆς (the) ζύμης (leaven), ἥτις (which) ἐστὶν (is) ὑπόκρισις (hypocrisy), τῶν (of the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees).

⁴⁷ Εἶδεν (Saw) ‹ὁ› (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) τὸν (-) Ναθαναὴλ (Nathanael) ἐρχόμενον (coming) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (Him), καὶ (and) λέγει (He says) περὶ (concerning) αὐτοῦ (him), “Ἴδε (Behold) ἀληθῶς (truly) Ἰσραηλίτης (an Israelite), ἐν (in) ᾧ (whom) δόλος (deceit) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (there is).”

²⁹ πεπληρωμένους (being filled with) πάσῃ (all) ἀδικίᾳ (unrighteousness), πονηρίᾳ (wickedness), πλεονεξίᾳ (covetousness), κακίᾳ (malice); μεστοὺς (full) φθόνου (of envy), φόνου (murder), ἔριδος (strife), δόλου (deceit), κακοηθείας (maliciousness); ψιθυριστάς (gossips),

¹² ἡ (The) νὺξ (night) προέκοψεν (is nearly over), ἡ (-) δὲ (and) ἡμέρα (the day) ἤγγικεν (has drawn near). ἀποθώμεθα (We should cast off) οὖν (therefore) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) τοῦ (-) σκότους (of darkness); ἐνδυσώμεθα (we should put on) δὲ (now) τὰ (the) ὅπλα (armor) τοῦ (-) φωτός (of light). ¹³ ὡς (As) ἐν (in) ἡμέρᾳ (daytime), εὐσχημόνως (properly) περιπατήσωμεν (we should walk), μὴ (not) κώμοις (in reveling) καὶ (and) μέθαις (drinking), μὴ (not) κοίταις (in sexual immorality) καὶ (and) ἀσελγείαις (sensuality), μὴ (not) ἔριδι (in dissension) καὶ (and) ζήλῳ (jealousy).

² γάλα (Milk) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐπότισα (I gave to drink), οὐ (not) βρῶμα (solid food), οὔπω (not yet) γὰρ (for) ἐδύνασθε (were you able). Ἀλλ’ (In fact), οὐδὲ (not) ἔτι (still) νῦν (now) δύνασθε (are you able); ³ ἔτι (still) γὰρ (for) σαρκικοί (fleshly) ἐστε (you are). ὅπου (Where) γὰρ (for) ἐν (are among) ὑμῖν (you) ζῆλος (jealousy) καὶ (and) ἔρις (strife), οὐχὶ (not) σαρκικοί (fleshly) ἐστε (are you), καὶ (and) κατὰ (according to) ἄνθρωπον (man) περιπατεῖτε (are walking)?

⁸ ὥστε (so that) ἑορτάζωμεν (we might celebrate the feast), μὴ (not) ἐν (with) ζύμῃ (leaven) παλαιᾷ (old), μηδὲ (not) ἐν (with) ζύμῃ (leaven) κακίας (of malice) καὶ (and) πονηρίας (wickedness), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐν (with) ἀζύμοις (unleavened bread) εἰλικρινείας (of sincerity) καὶ (and) ἀληθείας (of truth).

²⁰ Ἀδελφοί (Brothers), μὴ (not) παιδία (children) γίνεσθε (be) ταῖς (in the) φρεσίν (minds). ἀλλὰ (Yet) τῇ (in the) κακίᾳ (evil), νηπιάζετε (be little children); ταῖς (in the) δὲ (however) φρεσὶν (thinking), τέλειοι (full grown) γίνεσθε (be).

²⁰ φοβοῦμαι (I fear) γὰρ (for) μή (lest) πως (perhaps), ἐλθὼν (having come), οὐχ (not) οἵους (such as) θέλω (I wish) εὕρω (I may find) ὑμᾶς (you), κἀγὼ (and I) εὑρεθῶ (might be found) ὑμῖν (by you) οἷον (such as) οὐ (not) θέλετε (you do wish); μή (lest) πως (perhaps) ἔρις (quarreling), ζῆλος (jealousy), θυμοί (anger), ἐριθεῖαι (contentions), καταλαλιαί (slander), ψιθυρισμοί (gossip), φυσιώσεις (conceit), ἀκαταστασίαι (disorder);

²¹ φθόνοι (envyings), μέθαι (drunkennesses), κῶμοι (carousing), καὶ (and) τὰ (things) ὅμοια (like) τούτοις (these), ἃ (as to which) προλέγω (I forewarn) ὑμῖν (you), καθὼς (even as) προεῖπον (I warned before), ὅτι (that) οἱ (those) τὰ (such) τοιαῦτα (things) πράσσοντες (doing), βασιλείαν (kingdom) Θεοῦ (God’s) οὐ (not) κληρονομήσουσιν (will inherit). ²² Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) καρπὸς (the fruit) τοῦ (of the) Πνεύματός (Spirit) ἐστιν (is) ἀγάπη (love), χαρά (joy), εἰρήνη (peace), μακροθυμία (patience), χρηστότης (kindness), ἀγαθωσύνη (goodness), πίστις (faithfulness), ²³ πραΰτης (gentleness), ἐγκράτεια (self-control); κατὰ (against) τῶν (things) τοιούτων (such), οὐκ (no) ἔστιν (there is) νόμος (law). ²⁴ Οἱ (Those) δὲ (now) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), τὴν (the) σάρκα (flesh) ἐσταύρωσαν (have crucified) σὺν (with) τοῖς (its) παθήμασιν (passions) καὶ (and) ταῖς (-) ἐπιθυμίαις (desires). ²⁵ Εἰ (If) ζῶμεν (we live) Πνεύματι (by the Spirit), Πνεύματι (by the Spirit) καὶ (also) στοιχῶμεν (we should walk). ²⁶ μὴ (Not) γινώμεθα (we should become) κενόδοξοι (boastful), ἀλλήλους (one another) προκαλούμενοι (provoking), ἀλλήλοις (one another) φθονοῦντες (envying).

³¹ Πᾶσα (All) πικρία (bitterness), καὶ (and) θυμὸς (rage), καὶ (and) ὀργὴ (anger), καὶ (and) κραυγὴ (clamor), καὶ (and) βλασφημία (slander), ἀρθήτω (let be removed) ἀφ’ (from) ὑμῶν (you), σὺν (along with) πάσῃ (all) κακίᾳ (malice).

⁵ Νεκρώσατε (Put to death) οὖν (therefore) τὰ (the) μέλη (members) τὰ (which are) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth): πορνείαν (sexual immorality), ἀκαθαρσίαν (impurity), πάθος (passion), ἐπιθυμίαν (desire) κακήν (evil), καὶ (and) τὴν (-) πλεονεξίαν (covetousness), ἥτις (which) ἐστὶν (is) εἰδωλολατρία (idolatry), ⁶ δι’ (because of) ἃ (which things) ἔρχεται (is coming) ἡ (the) ὀργὴ (wrath) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ‹ἐπὶ (on) τοὺς (the) υἱοὺς (sons) τῆς (of) ἀπειθείας› (disobedience), ⁷ ἐν (in) οἷς (which) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) περιεπατήσατέ (walked) ποτε (once) ὅτε (when) ἐζῆτε (you were living) ἐν (in) τούτοις (them). ⁸ νυνὶ (Now) δὲ (however), ἀπόθεσθε (put off) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) τὰ (-) πάντα (all these things): ὀργήν (anger), θυμόν (rage), κακίαν (malice), βλασφημίαν (slander), αἰσχρολογίαν (foul language) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) στόματος (mouth) ὑμῶν (of you).

³ Ἡ (-) γὰρ (For) παράκλησις (the exhortation) ἡμῶν (of us) οὐκ (is not) ἐκ (of) πλάνης (error), οὐδὲ (nor) ἐξ (of) ἀκαθαρσίας (impurity), οὐδὲ (nor) ἐν (in) δόλῳ (trickery);

¹¹ Γυναῖκας (Women) ὡσαύτως (likewise) σεμνάς (must be dignified), μὴ (not) διαβόλους (slanderers), νηφαλίους (clear-minded), πιστὰς (faithful) ἐν (in) πᾶσιν (all things).

³ Ἦμεν (Were) γάρ (for) ποτε (once) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we ourselves) ἀνόητοι (foolish), ἀπειθεῖς (disobedient), πλανώμενοι (being deceived), δουλεύοντες (serving) ἐπιθυμίαις (lusts) καὶ (and) ἡδοναῖς (pleasures) ποικίλαις (various), ἐν (in) κακίᾳ (malice) καὶ (and) φθόνῳ (envy) διάγοντες (living), στυγητοί (hateful), μισοῦντες (hating) ἀλλήλους (one another). ⁴ Ὅτε (When) δὲ (however) ἡ (the) χρηστότης (kindness) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) φιλανθρωπία (love of mankind) ἐπεφάνη (appeared), τοῦ (of the) Σωτῆρος (Savior) ἡμῶν (of us), Θεοῦ (God), ⁵ οὐκ (not) ἐξ (by) ἔργων (works) τῶν (-) ἐν (in) δικαιοσύνῃ (righteousness) ἃ (that) ἐποιήσαμεν (did) ἡμεῖς (we), ἀλλὰ (but) κατὰ (according to) τὸ (-) αὐτοῦ (His) ἔλεος (mercy), ἔσωσεν (He saved) ἡμᾶς (us) διὰ (through) λουτροῦ (the washing) παλινγενεσίας (of regeneration) καὶ (and) ἀνακαινώσεως (renewing) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit) Ἁγίου (Holy),

¹ Τοιγαροῦν (Therefore) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we), τοσοῦτον (such a great) ἔχοντες (having) περικείμενον (encompassing) ἡμῖν (us) νέφος (a cloud) μαρτύρων (of witnesses), ὄγκον (weight) ἀποθέμενοι (having laid aside) πάντα (every), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) εὐπερίστατον (easily entangling) ἁμαρτίαν (sin), δι’ (with) ὑπομονῆς (endurance) τρέχωμεν (should run) τὸν (the) προκείμενον (lying before) ἡμῖν (us) ἀγῶνα (race),

²¹ διὸ (Therefore), ἀποθέμενοι (having put aside) πᾶσαν (all) ῥυπαρίαν (filthiness) καὶ (and) περισσείαν (abounding) κακίας (of wickedness), ἐν (in) πραΰτητι (humility) δέξασθε (receive) τὸν (the) ἔμφυτον (implanted) λόγον (word), τὸν (-) δυνάμενον (being able) σῶσαι (to save) τὰς (the) ψυχὰς (souls) ὑμῶν (of you).

¹⁴ εἰ (If) δὲ (however) ζῆλον (jealousy) πικρὸν (bitter) ἔχετε (you have), καὶ (and) ἐριθείαν (self-interest) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) ὑμῶν (of you), μὴ (not) κατακαυχᾶσθε (boast of it) καὶ (and) ψεύδεσθε (lie) κατὰ (against) τῆς (the) ἀληθείας (truth).

¹⁶ ὅπου (Where) γὰρ (for) ζῆλος (jealousy) καὶ (and) ἐριθεία (self-interest exist), ἐκεῖ (there will be) ἀκαταστασία (disorder) καὶ (and) πᾶν (every) φαῦλον (evil) πρᾶγμα (thing). ¹⁷ Ἡ (-) δὲ (But) ἄνωθεν (the from above) σοφία (wisdom) πρῶτον (first) μὲν (indeed) ἁγνή (pure) ἐστιν (is), ἔπειτα (then) εἰρηνική (peaceable), ἐπιεικής (gentle), εὐπειθής (reasonable), μεστὴ (full) ἐλέους (of mercy) καὶ (and) καρπῶν (of fruits) ἀγαθῶν (good), ἀδιάκριτος (impartial), ἀνυπόκριτος (sincere).

⁵ ἢ (Or) δοκεῖτε (think you) ὅτι (that) κενῶς (in vain) ἡ (the) γραφὴ (Scripture) λέγει (says), “Πρὸς (With) φθόνον (envy) ἐπιποθεῖ (yearns) τὸ (the) πνεῦμα (Spirit) ὃ (that) κατῴκισεν (He has made to dwell) ἐν (in) ἡμῖν (us)?”

¹¹ Μὴ (Not) καταλαλεῖτε (speak against) ἀλλήλων (one another), ἀδελφοί (brothers). ὁ (The one) καταλαλῶν (speaking against) ἀδελφοῦ (his brother) ἢ (or) κρίνων (judging) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), καταλαλεῖ (speaks against) νόμου (the Law) καὶ (and) κρίνει (judges) νόμον (the Law). εἰ (If) δὲ (however) νόμον (the Law) κρίνεις (you judge), οὐκ (not) εἶ (you are) ποιητὴς (a doer) νόμου (of the Law), ἀλλὰ (but) κριτής (a judge).

⁹ μὴ (Not) στενάζετε (grumble) ἀδελφοί (brothers) κατ’ (against) ἀλλήλων (one another), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) κριθῆτε (you may be condemned). ἰδοὺ (Behold), ὁ (the) κριτὴς (Judge) πρὸ (before) τῶν (the) θυρῶν (doors) ἕστηκεν (is standing).

¹⁸ εἰδότες (knowing) ὅτι (that) οὐ (not) φθαρτοῖς (by perishable things) — ἀργυρίῳ (by silver) ἢ (or) χρυσίῳ (by gold) — ἐλυτρώθητε (you were redeemed) ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) ματαίας (futile) ὑμῶν (of you) ἀναστροφῆς (manner of life) πατροπαραδότου (handed down from your fathers), ¹⁹ ἀλλὰ (but) τιμίῳ (by the precious) αἵματι (blood), ὡς (as) ἀμνοῦ (of a lamb) ἀμώμου (without blemish) καὶ (and) ἀσπίλου (without spot), Χριστοῦ (of Christ), ²⁰ προεγνωσμένου (having been foreknown) μὲν (indeed) πρὸ (before) καταβολῆς (the foundation) κόσμου (of the world), φανερωθέντος (having been revealed) δὲ (however) ἐπ’ (in) ἐσχάτου (the last) τῶν (-) χρόνων (times) δι’ (for the sake of) ὑμᾶς (you), ²¹ τοὺς (who) δι’ (by) αὐτοῦ (Him) πιστοὺς (believe) εἰς (in) Θεὸν (God), τὸν (the one) ἐγείραντα (having raised up) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead) καὶ (and) δόξαν (glory) αὐτῷ (Him) δόντα (having given), ὥστε (so as for) τὴν (the) πίστιν (faith) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and) ἐλπίδα (hope), εἶναι (to be) εἰς (in) Θεόν (God). ²² Τὰς (The) ψυχὰς (souls) ὑμῶν (of you) ἡγνικότες (having purified) ἐν (by) τῇ (-) ὑπακοῇ (obedience) τῆς (to the) ἀληθείας (truth) εἰς (unto) φιλαδελφίαν (brotherly love) ἀνυπόκριτον (sincere), ἐκ (out of) [καθαρᾶς] (purity) καρδίας (of heart), ἀλλήλους (one another) ἀγαπήσατε (love) ἐκτενῶς (fervently). ²³ ἀναγεγεννημένοι (Having been born again), οὐκ (not) ἐκ (of) σπορᾶς (seed) φθαρτῆς (perishable), ἀλλὰ (but) ἀφθάρτου (of imperishable), διὰ (by) λόγου (the word) ζῶντος (living) Θεοῦ (of God), καὶ (and) μένοντος (abiding), ²⁴ διότι (because), “Πᾶσα (All) σὰρξ (flesh is) ὡς (like) χόρτος (grass), καὶ (and) πᾶσα (all) δόξα (the glory) αὐτῆς (of it) ὡς (like) ἄνθος (the flower) χόρτου (of grass). ἐξηράνθη (Withers) ὁ (the) χόρτος (grass), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) ἄνθος (flower) ἐξέπεσεν (falls away), ²⁵ τὸ (-) δὲ (but) ῥῆμα (the word) Κυρίου (of the Lord) μένει (abides) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age).” Τοῦτο (This) δέ (now) ἐστιν (is) τὸ (the) ῥῆμα (word) τὸ (-) εὐαγγελισθὲν (having been proclaimed) εἰς (to) ὑμᾶς (you).

⁴ Ἐν (With respect to) ᾧ (this) ξενίζονται (they think it strange), μὴ (not) συντρεχόντων (running with them) ὑμῶν (of you) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) αὐτὴν (same) τῆς (-) ἀσωτίας (of debauchery) ἀνάχυσιν (overflow), βλασφημοῦντες (speaking evil of you),

⁵ καὶ (And) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) στόματι (mouth) αὐτῶν (of them) οὐχ (not) εὑρέθη (was found) ψεῦδος (a lie); ἄμωμοί (blameless) εἰσιν (they are).

³ καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said), “Ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) στραφῆτε (you turn) καὶ (and) γένησθε (become) ὡς (as) τὰ (the) παιδία (little children), οὐ (no) μὴ (not) εἰσέλθητε (shall you enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens).

¹⁵ ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ὃς (whoever) ἂν (-) μὴ (not) δέξηται (shall receive) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ὡς (as) παιδίον (a child), οὐ (no) μὴ (not) εἰσέλθῃ (shall enter) εἰς (into) αὐτήν (it).”

⁴ συνετάφημεν (We were buried) οὖν (therefore) αὐτῷ (with Him) διὰ (through) τοῦ (-) βαπτίσματος (baptism) εἰς (into) τὸν (-) θάνατον (death), ἵνα (so that) ὥσπερ (just as) ἠγέρθη (was raised up) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead) διὰ (by) τῆς (the) δόξης (glory) τοῦ (of the) Πατρός (Father), οὕτως (so) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we) ἐν (in) καινότητι (newness) ζωῆς (of life) περιπατήσωμεν (should walk).

¹ Κἀγώ (And I) ἀδελφοί (brothers) οὐκ (not) ἠδυνήθην (was able) λαλῆσαι (to speak) ὑμῖν (to you) ὡς (as) πνευματικοῖς (to spiritual), ἀλλ’ (but) ὡς (as) σαρκίνοις (to fleshly), ὡς (as) νηπίοις (to infants) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ). ² γάλα (Milk) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐπότισα (I gave to drink), οὐ (not) βρῶμα (solid food), οὔπω (not yet) γὰρ (for) ἐδύνασθε (were you able). Ἀλλ’ (In fact), οὐδὲ (not) ἔτι (still) νῦν (now) δύνασθε (are you able);

¹⁵ ἀληθεύοντες (Speaking the truth) δὲ (however) ἐν (in) ἀγάπῃ (love), αὐξήσωμεν (we should grow up) εἰς (into) αὐτὸν (Him) τὰ (in) πάντα (all things) ὅς (who) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) κεφαλή (head), Χριστός (Christ),

³ Εὐχαριστεῖν (To thank) ὀφείλομεν (we ought) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God) πάντοτε (always) περὶ (concerning) ὑμῶν (you), ἀδελφοί (brothers), καθὼς (just as) ἄξιόν (fitting) ἐστιν (it is), ὅτι (because) ὑπεραυξάνει (is increasing exceedingly) ἡ (the) πίστις (faith) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and) πλεονάζει (is abounding) ἡ (the) ἀγάπη (love) ἑνὸς (of one) ἑκάστου (each) πάντων (of all) ὑμῶν (you) εἰς (to) ἀλλήλους (one another);

⁵ καὶ (and) καλὸν (the goodness) γευσαμένους (having tasted) Θεοῦ (of God’s) ῥῆμα (word), δυνάμεις (the power) τε (also) μέλλοντος (of the coming) αἰῶνος (age) — ⁶ καὶ (and then) παραπεσόντας (having fallen away) — πάλιν (again) ἀνακαινίζειν (to restore them) εἰς (to) μετάνοιαν (repentance), ἀνασταυροῦντας (crucifying) ἑαυτοῖς (in themselves) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) καὶ (and) παραδειγματίζοντας (subjecting Him to open shame).

²⁸ Δεῦτε (Come) πρός (to) με (Me), πάντες (all) οἱ (those) κοπιῶντες (toiling) καὶ (and) πεφορτισμένοι (being burdened), κἀγὼ (and I) ἀναπαύσω (will give rest) ὑμᾶς (to you).

¹⁸ “Ἰδοὺ (Behold) ὁ (the) παῖς (servant) μου (of Me), ὃν (whom) ᾑρέτισα (I have chosen), ὁ (the) ἀγαπητός (beloved) μου (of Me), ‹εἰς› (in) ὃν (whom) εὐδόκησεν (has found delight) ἡ (the) ψυχή (soul) μου (of Me). θήσω (I will put) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμά (Spirit) μου (of Me) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτόν (Him), καὶ (and) κρίσιν (justice) τοῖς (to the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles) ἀπαγγελεῖ (He will proclaim).

⁴² Λέγει (Says) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Οὐδέποτε (Never) ἀνέγνωτε (did you read) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) γραφαῖς (Scriptures): ‘Λίθον (The stone) ὃν (which) ἀπεδοκίμασαν (rejected) οἱ (those) οἰκοδομοῦντες (building), Οὗτος (this) ἐγενήθη (has become) εἰς (the) κεφαλὴν (chief) γωνίας (corner). Παρὰ (From) Κυρίου (the Lord) ἐγένετο (was) αὕτη (this), Καὶ (and) ἔστιν (it is) θαυμαστὴ (marvelous) ἐν (in) ὀφθαλμοῖς (the eyes) ἡμῶν (of us)?’?

¹⁰ οὐδὲ (Not even) τὴν (the) γραφὴν (Scripture) ταύτην (this) ἀνέγνωτε (have you read): ‘Λίθον (The stone) ὃν (which) ἀπεδοκίμασαν (rejected) οἱ (those) οἰκοδομοῦντες (building), Οὗτος (this) ἐγενήθη (has become) εἰς (the) κεφαλὴν (chief) γωνίας (corner); ¹¹ Παρὰ (from the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἐγένετο (was) αὕτη (this), Καὶ (and) ἔστιν (it is) θαυμαστὴ (marvelous) ἐν (in) ὀφθαλμοῖς (the eyes) ἡμῶν (of us).’?”

¹⁷ Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) ἐμβλέψας (having looked at) αὐτοῖς (them), εἶπεν (He said), “Τί (What) οὖν (then) ἐστιν (is) τὸ (that) γεγραμμένον (has been written) τοῦτο (this): ‘Λίθον (The stone) ὃν (which) ἀπεδοκίμασαν (rejected) οἱ (those) οἰκοδομοῦντες (building), Οὗτος (this) ἐγενήθη (has become) εἰς (into) κεφαλὴν (the head) γωνίας (of the corner)’? ¹⁸ Πᾶς (Everyone) ὁ (-) πεσὼν (falling) ἐπ’ (on) ἐκεῖνον (that) τὸν (-) λίθον (stone) συνθλασθήσεται (will be broken); ἐφ’ (on) ὃν (whomever) δ’ (but) ἂν (-) πέσῃ (it might fall), λικμήσει (it will grind into powder) αὐτόν (him).”

²⁶ ὥσπερ (As) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ἔχει (has) ζωὴν (life) ἐν (in) ἑαυτῷ (Himself), οὕτως (so) καὶ (also) τῷ (to the) Υἱῷ (Son) ἔδωκεν (He gave) ζωὴν (life), ἔχειν (to have) ἐν (in) ἑαυτῷ (Himself).

⁴⁰ καὶ (and) οὐ (not) θέλετε (you are willing) ἐλθεῖν (to come) πρός (to) με (Me) ἵνα (that) ζωὴν (life) ἔχητε (you may have).

³⁷ Πᾶν (All) ὃ (that) δίδωσίν (gives) μοι (Me) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father), πρὸς (to) ἐμὲ (Me) ἥξει (will come), καὶ (and) τὸν (the one) ἐρχόμενον (coming) πρός (to) με (Me), οὐ (no) μὴ (not) ἐκβάλω (shall I cast) ἔξω (out).

⁵⁷ καθὼς (As) ἀπέστειλέν (sent) με (Me) ὁ (the) ζῶν (living) Πατὴρ (Father), κἀγὼ (and I) ζῶ (live) διὰ (because of) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father), καὶ (also) ὁ (the one) τρώγων (feeding on) με (Me), κἀκεῖνος (he also) ζήσει (will live) δι’ (because of) ἐμέ (Me).

¹⁹ ἔτι (Yet) μικρὸν (a little while) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) με (Me) οὐκέτι (no more) θεωρεῖ (sees), ὑμεῖς (you) δὲ (however) θεωρεῖτέ (see) με (Me); ὅτι (because) ἐγὼ (I) ζῶ (live), καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) ζήσετε (will live).

¹¹ οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ‘Ὁ (the) λίθος (stone) ὁ (-) ἐξουθενηθεὶς (having been rejected) ὑφ’ (by) ὑμῶν (you), τῶν (the) οἰκοδόμων (builders), ὁ (which) γενόμενος (has become) εἰς (into) κεφαλὴν (head) γωνίας (of the corner).’ ¹² Καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (there is) ἐν (in) ἄλλῳ (other) οὐδενὶ (no one) ἡ (the) σωτηρία (salvation), οὐδὲ (not) γὰρ (for) ὄνομά (name) ἐστιν (is there) ἕτερον (another) ὑπὸ (under) τὸν (-) οὐρανὸν (heaven) τὸ (-) δεδομένον (having been given) ἐν (among) ἀνθρώποις (men) ἐν (by) ᾧ (which) δεῖ (it behooves) σωθῆναι (to be saved) ἡμᾶς (us).”

¹⁰ εἰ (If) γὰρ (for), ἐχθροὶ (enemies) ὄντες (being), κατηλλάγημεν (we were reconciled) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) θανάτου (death) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him), πολλῷ (much) μᾶλλον (more), καταλλαγέντες (having been reconciled), σωθησόμεθα (shall we be saved) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ζωῇ (life) αὐτοῦ (of Him)!

⁴ ὅταν (When) ὁ (-) Χριστὸς (Christ) φανερωθῇ (may be revealed), ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) ὑμῶν* (of you), τότε (then) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him) φανερωθήσεσθε (will appear) ἐν (in) δόξῃ (glory).

⁷ ἵνα (so that) τὸ (the) δοκίμιον (proven genuineness) ὑμῶν (of your) τῆς (-) πίστεως (faith), πολυτιμότερον (more precious) χρυσίου (than gold), τοῦ (-) ἀπολλυμένου (perishing), διὰ (by) πυρὸς (fire) δὲ (though) δοκιμαζομένου (being refined), εὑρεθῇ (may be discovered) εἰς (to result in) ἔπαινον (praise) καὶ (and) δόξαν (glory) καὶ (and) τιμὴν (honor) ἐν (in) ἀποκαλύψει (the revelation) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ),

¹⁹ ἀλλὰ (but) τιμίῳ (by the precious) αἵματι (blood), ὡς (as) ἀμνοῦ (of a lamb) ἀμώμου (without blemish) καὶ (and) ἀσπίλου (without spot), Χριστοῦ (of Christ),

⁷ Ὑμῖν (To you) οὖν (therefore is) ἡ (the) τιμὴ (preciousness), τοῖς (-) πιστεύουσιν (believing); ἀπιστοῦσιν (to those disobeying), δὲ (however), “Λίθος (The stone) ὃν (which) ἀπεδοκίμασαν (have rejected) οἱ (those) οἰκοδομοῦντες (building), οὗτος (this) ἐγενήθη (has become) εἰς (into) κεφαλὴν (the head) γωνίας (of the corner),”

⁴ δι’ (through) ὧν (which) τὰ (the) τίμια (precious) καὶ (and) μέγιστα (magnificent) ἡμῖν (to us) ἐπαγγέλματα (promises) δεδώρηται (He has given), ἵνα (so that) διὰ (through) τούτων (these) γένησθε (you might become) θείας (of the divine) κοινωνοὶ (partakers) φύσεως (nature), ἀποφυγόντες (having escaped) τῆς (the) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world) ἐν (in) ἐπιθυμίᾳ (desire), φθορᾶς (decay).

²² ὑμεῖς (You) προσκυνεῖτε (worship) ὃ (what) οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (you know); ἡμεῖς (we) προσκυνοῦμεν (worship) ὃ (what) οἴδαμεν (we know), ὅτι (for) ἡ (-) σωτηρία (salvation) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews) ἐστίν (is). ²³ ἀλλὰ (But) ἔρχεται (is coming) ὥρα (an hour) καὶ (and) νῦν (now) ἐστιν (is), ὅτε (when) οἱ (the) ἀληθινοὶ (true) προσκυνηταὶ (worshipers) προσκυνήσουσιν (will worship) τῷ (the) Πατρὶ (Father) ἐν (in) πνεύματι (spirit) καὶ (and) ἀληθείᾳ (truth); καὶ (also) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) τοιούτους (such) ζητεῖ (seeks), τοὺς (who) προσκυνοῦντας (worship) αὐτόν (Him). ²⁴ Πνεῦμα (Spirit) ὁ (-) Θεός (God is), καὶ (and) τοὺς (those) προσκυνοῦντας (worshiping) ‹αὐτὸν› (Him) ἐν (in) πνεύματι (spirit) καὶ (and) ἀληθείᾳ (truth) δεῖ (it behooves) προσκυνεῖν (to worship).”

¹ Παρακαλῶ (I exhort) οὖν (therefore) ὑμᾶς (you), ἀδελφοί (brothers), διὰ (through) τῶν (the) οἰκτιρμῶν (compassions) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), παραστῆσαι (to present) τὰ (the) σώματα (bodies) ὑμῶν (of you) θυσίαν (a sacrifice) ζῶσαν (living), ἁγίαν (holy), «τῷ (-) Θεῷ» (to God) εὐάρεστον (well-pleasing), τὴν (which is) λογικὴν (the reasonable) λατρείαν (service) ὑμῶν (of you).

¹⁶ εἰς (for) τὸ (-) εἶναί (to be) με (me) λειτουργὸν (a minister) Χριστοῦ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) εἰς (to) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles), ἱερουργοῦντα (administering the sacred service) τὸ (of the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἵνα (so that) γένηται (might become) ἡ (the) προσφορὰ (offering) τῶν (of the) ἐθνῶν (Gentiles) εὐπρόσδεκτος (acceptable), ἡγιασμένη (having been sanctified) ἐν (in the) Πνεύματι (Spirit) Ἁγίῳ (Holy).

⁹ Θεοῦ (Of God) γάρ (for) ἐσμεν (we are) συνεργοί (fellow workers); Θεοῦ (God’s) γεώργιον (field), Θεοῦ (God’s) οἰκοδομή (building) ἐστε (you are).

¹⁶ Οὐκ (Not) οἴδατε (know you) ὅτι (that) ναὸς (temple) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐστε (you yourselves are), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) «ἐν (in) ὑμῖν» (you) οἰκεῖ (dwells)?

¹⁹ ἢ (Or) οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (know you) ὅτι (that) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body) ὑμῶν (of you) ναὸς (a temple) τοῦ (of the) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) Ἁγίου (Holy) Πνεύματός (Spirit) ἐστιν (is), οὗ (whom) ἔχετε (you have) ἀπὸ (from) Θεοῦ (God)? καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) ἐστὲ (you are) ἑαυτῶν (your own),

¹⁶ τίς (What) δὲ (now) συνκατάθεσις (agreement) ναῷ (the temple) Θεοῦ (of God) μετὰ (with) εἰδώλων (idols)? ἡμεῖς (We) γὰρ (for) ναὸς (the temple) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐσμεν (are), ζῶντος (the living), καθὼς (as) εἶπεν (has said) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ὅτι (-): “Ἐνοικήσω (I will dwell) ἐν (in) αὐτοῖς (them), καὶ (and) ἐμπεριπατήσω* (will walk among them); καὶ (and) ἔσομαι (I will be) αὐτῶν (their) Θεός (God), καὶ (and) αὐτοὶ (they) ἔσονταί (will be) μου (to Me) λαός (a people).”

²⁰ ἐποικοδομηθέντες (having been built) ἐπὶ (upon) τῷ (the) θεμελίῳ (foundation) τῶν (of the) ἀποστόλων (apostles) καὶ (and) προφητῶν (prophets), ὄντος (being) ἀκρογωνιαίου (the cornerstone) αὐτοῦ (Himself) Χριστοῦ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), ²¹ ἐν (in) ᾧ (whom) πᾶσα (the whole) οἰκοδομὴ (building), συναρμολογουμένη (being fitted together), αὔξει (is increasing) εἰς (into) ναὸν (a temple), ἅγιον (holy) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord), ²² ἐν (in) ᾧ (whom) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) συνοικοδομεῖσθε (are being built together) εἰς (for) κατοικητήριον (a habitation) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐν (in) Πνεύματι (the Spirit).

¹¹ πεπληρωμένοι (being filled) καρπὸν (with the fruit) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness) τὸν (that is) διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), εἰς (to) δόξαν (the glory) καὶ (and) ἔπαινον (praise) Θεοῦ (of God).

¹⁷ Ἀλλὰ (But) εἰ (if) καὶ (even) σπένδομαι (I am being poured out as a drink offering) ἐπὶ (on) τῇ (the) θυσίᾳ (sacrifice) καὶ (and) λειτουργίᾳ (service) τῆς (of the) πίστεως (faith) ὑμῶν (of you), χαίρω (I am glad) καὶ (and) συνχαίρω (rejoice with) πᾶσιν (all) ὑμῖν (you).

¹⁸ ἀπέχω (I have) δὲ (however) πάντα (all things) καὶ (and) περισσεύω (abound); πεπλήρωμαι (I am full), δεξάμενος (having received) παρὰ (from) Ἐπαφροδίτου (Epaphroditus) τὰ (the things) παρ’ (from) ὑμῶν (you), ὀσμὴν (an odor) εὐωδίας (of a sweet smell), θυσίαν (a sacrifice) δεκτήν (acceptable), εὐάρεστον (well-pleasing) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God).

¹⁷ καὶ (And) πᾶν (everything), ὅ (which) τι (what) ἐὰν (if) ποιῆτε (you might do) ἐν (in) λόγῳ (word) ἢ (or) ἐν (in) ἔργῳ (deed), πάντα (all) ἐν (in) ὀνόματι (the name) Κυρίου (of the Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), εὐχαριστοῦντες (giving thanks) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God) Πατρὶ (the Father) δι’ (through) αὐτοῦ (Him).

¹⁵ ἐὰν (if) δὲ (however) βραδύνω (I should delay), ἵνα (so that) εἰδῇς (you may know) πῶς (how) δεῖ (it behooves one) ἐν (in) οἴκῳ (the household) Θεοῦ (of God) ἀναστρέφεσθαι (to conduct oneself), ἥτις (which) ἐστὶν (is) ἐκκλησία (the church) Θεοῦ (of God) ζῶντος (the living), στῦλος (the pillar) καὶ (and) ἑδραίωμα (base) τῆς (of the) ἀληθείας (truth).

⁶ Χριστὸς (Christ) δὲ (however) ὡς (as) υἱὸς (the Son) ἐπὶ (over) τὸν (the) οἶκον (house) αὐτοῦ (of Him), οὗ (whose) οἶκός (house) ἐσμεν (are) ἡμεῖς (we), ἐὰν (if indeed) τὴν (our) παρρησίαν (confidence), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) καύχημα (boast) τῆς (of our) ἐλπίδος (hope), κατάσχωμεν (we should hold).

¹⁵ Δι’ (Through) αὐτοῦ (Him) οὖν (then) ἀναφέρωμεν (we should offer) θυσίαν (the sacrifice) αἰνέσεως (of praise) διὰ (through) παντὸς (everything) τῷ (to) Θεῷ (God), τοῦτ’ (that) ἔστιν (is), καρπὸν (the fruit) χειλέων (of the lips) ὁμολογούντων (confessing) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ¹⁶ τῆς (-) δὲ (And) εὐποιΐας (the good) καὶ (and) κοινωνίας (of sharing), μὴ (not) ἐπιλανθάνεσθε (be forgetful); τοιαύταις (with such) γὰρ (for) θυσίαις (sacrifices) εὐαρεστεῖται (is well pleased) ὁ (-) Θεός (God).

⁹ Ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) γένος (are a race) ἐκλεκτόν (chosen), βασίλειον (a royal) ἱεράτευμα (priesthood), ἔθνος (a nation) ἅγιον (holy), λαὸς (a people) εἰς (for His) περιποίησιν (possession), ὅπως (so that) τὰς (the) ἀρετὰς (excellencies) ἐξαγγείλητε (you may proclaim) τοῦ (of the One) ἐκ (out of) σκότους (darkness) ὑμᾶς (you) καλέσαντος (having called), εἰς (to) τὸ (the) θαυμαστὸν (marvelous) αὐτοῦ (of Him) φῶς (light),

¹¹ εἴ (if) τις (anyone) λαλεῖ (speaks), ὡς (as) λόγια (oracles) Θεοῦ (of God); εἴ (if) τις (anyone) διακονεῖ (serves), ὡς (as) ἐξ (of) ἰσχύος (strength) ἧς (which) χορηγεῖ (supplies) ὁ (-) Θεός (God), ἵνα (so that) ἐν (in) πᾶσιν (all things) δοξάζηται (may be glorified) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), ᾧ (to whom) ἐστιν (be) ἡ (the) δόξα (glory) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) κράτος (power) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (ages) τῶν (of the) αἰώνων (ages). ἀμήν (Amen).

¹⁰ καὶ (and) ἐποίησας (You have made) αὐτοὺς (them) τῷ (to the) Θεῷ (God) ἡμῶν (of us), βασιλείαν (a kingdom) καὶ (and) ἱερεῖς (priests); καὶ (and) βασιλεύσουσιν (they will reign) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth).”

⁶ μακάριος (Blessed) καὶ (and) ἅγιος (holy is) ὁ (the one) ἔχων (having) μέρος (a part) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀναστάσει (resurrection) τῇ (-) πρώτῃ (first)! ἐπὶ (Over) τούτων (these) ὁ (the) δεύτερος (second) θάνατος (death) οὐκ (not) ἔχει (has) ἐξουσίαν (power), ἀλλ’ (but) ἔσονται (they will be) ἱερεῖς (priests) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) καὶ (and) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), καὶ (and) βασιλεύσουσιν (will reign) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him) τὰ (a) χίλια (thousand) ἔτη (years).

¹⁰ οὐδὲ (Not even) τὴν (the) γραφὴν (Scripture) ταύτην (this) ἀνέγνωτε (have you read): ‘Λίθον (The stone) ὃν (which) ἀπεδοκίμασαν (rejected) οἱ (those) οἰκοδομοῦντες (building), Οὗτος (this) ἐγενήθη (has become) εἰς (the) κεφαλὴν (chief) γωνίας (corner);

³⁵ Καὶ (And) εἱστήκει (stood) ὁ (the) λαὸς (people) θεωρῶν (beholding). ἐξεμυκτήριζον (Were deriding Him) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) οἱ (the) ἄρχοντες (rulers), λέγοντες (saying), “Ἄλλους (Others) ἔσωσεν (He saved); σωσάτω (let Him save) ἑαυτόν (Himself) εἰ (if) οὗτός (this) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Χριστὸς (Christ) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ὁ (the) ἐκλεκτός (Chosen One).”

³⁸ ὁ (The one) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) ἐμέ (Me), καθὼς (as) εἶπεν (has said) ἡ (the) γραφή (Scripture): ‘Ποταμοὶ (Rivers) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) κοιλίας (belly) αὐτοῦ (of him) ῥεύσουσιν (will flow) ὕδατος (of water) ζῶντος (living).’”

¹⁶ “Ἄνδρες (Men), ἀδελφοί (brothers), ἔδει (it was necessary for) πληρωθῆναι (to have been fulfilled) τὴν (the) γραφὴν (Scripture) ἣν (which) προεῖπεν (spoke beforehand) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τὸ (-) Ἅγιον (Holy) διὰ (by) στόματος (the mouth) Δαυὶδ (of David) περὶ (concerning) Ἰούδα (Judas), τοῦ (the one) γενομένου (having become) ὁδηγοῦ (guide) τοῖς (to those) συλλαβοῦσιν (having arrested) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus);

³² διὰ (Because of) τί (why)? ὅτι (Because it was) οὐκ (not) ἐκ (by) πίστεως (faith), ἀλλ’ (but) ὡς (as) ἐξ (by) ἔργων (works). προσέκοψαν (They stumbled) τῷ (over the) λίθῳ (stone) τοῦ (-) προσκόμματος (of stumbling), ³³ καθὼς (as) γέγραπται (it has been written): “Ἰδοὺ (Behold) τίθημι (I lay) ἐν (in) Σιὼν (Zion) λίθον (a stone) προσκόμματος (of stumbling), καὶ (and) πέτραν (a rock) σκανδάλου (of offense); καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) πιστεύων (believing) ἐπ’ (on) αὐτῷ (Him), οὐ (never) καταισχυνθήσεται (will be put to shame).”

¹⁶ ὡς (as) καὶ (also) ἐν (in) πάσαις (all) ‹ταῖς› (the) ἐπιστολαῖς (letters), λαλῶν (speaking) ἐν (in) αὐταῖς (them) περὶ (concerning) τούτων (these things), ἐν (among) αἷς (which) ἐστιν (are) δυσνόητά (difficult to be understood) τινα (some things), ἃ (which) οἱ (the) ἀμαθεῖς (ignorant) καὶ (and) ἀστήρικτοι (unestablished) στρεβλοῦσιν (distort), ὡς (as) καὶ (also) τὰς (the) λοιπὰς (other) γραφὰς (Scriptures), πρὸς (to) τὴν (the) ἰδίαν (own) αὐτῶν (of them) ἀπώλειαν (destruction).

⁴⁴ Ὁμοία (Like) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) θησαυρῷ (treasure) κεκρυμμένῳ (having been hidden) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀγρῷ (field), ὃν (which), εὑρὼν (having found), ἄνθρωπος (a man) ἔκρυψεν (hid), καὶ (and) ἀπὸ (for) τῆς (the) χαρᾶς (joy) αὐτοῦ (of it) ὑπάγει (goes) καὶ (and) πωλεῖ (he sells) ‹πάντα› (all) ὅσα (that) ἔχει (he has) καὶ (and) ἀγοράζει (buys) τὸν (the) ἀγρὸν (field) ἐκεῖνον (that). ⁴⁵ Πάλιν (Again) ὁμοία (like) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) ‹ἀνθρώπῳ› (a man), ἐμπόρῳ (a merchant) ζητοῦντι (seeking) καλοὺς (fine) μαργαρίτας (pearls); ⁴⁶ εὑρὼν (having found) δὲ (now) ἕνα (one) πολύτιμον (very precious) μαργαρίτην (pearl), ἀπελθὼν (having gone away), πέπρακεν (he has sold) πάντα (all things) ὅσα (as many as) εἶχεν (he had), καὶ (and) ἠγόρασεν (bought) αὐτόν (it).

³² φῶς (a light) εἰς (for) ἀποκάλυψιν (revelation) ἐθνῶν (of the Gentiles), καὶ (and) δόξαν (glory) λαοῦ (of the people) σου (of You), Ἰσραήλ (Israel).”

⁶⁸ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) αὐτῷ (Him) Σίμων (Simon) Πέτρος (Peter), “Κύριε (Lord), πρὸς (to) τίνα (whom) ἀπελευσόμεθα (will we go)? ῥήματα (The words) ζωῆς (of life) αἰωνίου (eternal) ἔχεις (You have); ⁶⁹ καὶ (and) ἡμεῖς (we) πεπιστεύκαμεν (have believed) καὶ (and) ἐγνώκαμεν (have known) ὅτι (that) σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Ἅγιος (Holy One) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).”

¹⁹ Ὅθεν (So then), βασιλεῦ (O king) Ἀγρίππα (Agrippa), οὐκ (not) ἐγενόμην (I was) ἀπειθὴς (disobedient) τῇ (to the) οὐρανίῳ (heavenly) ὀπτασίᾳ (vision),

²¹ Πρὸς (As for) δὲ (however), τὸν (-) Ἰσραὴλ (Israel), λέγει (he says): “Ὅλην (All) τὴν (the) ἡμέραν (day), ἐξεπέτασα (I have stretched out) τὰς (the) χεῖράς (hands) μου (of Me), πρὸς (to) λαὸν (a people) ἀπειθοῦντα (disobeying) καὶ (and) ἀντιλέγοντα (contradicting).”

¹⁶ οἷς (to one) μὲν (indeed) ὀσμὴ (an odor) ἐκ (from) θανάτου (death) εἰς (to) θάνατον (death), οἷς (to one) δὲ (now), ὀσμὴ (a fragrance) ἐκ (from) ζωῆς (life) εἰς (to) ζωήν (life). καὶ (And) πρὸς (for) ταῦτα (these things) τίς (who is) ἱκανός (sufficient)?

¹⁰ καὶ (and) ἐστὲ (you are) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) πεπληρωμένοι (complete), ὅς (who) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) κεφαλὴ (head) πάσης (of all) ἀρχῆς (rule) καὶ (and) ἐξουσίας (authority),

³ Ἦμεν (Were) γάρ (for) ποτε (once) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we ourselves) ἀνόητοι (foolish), ἀπειθεῖς (disobedient), πλανώμενοι (being deceived), δουλεύοντες (serving) ἐπιθυμίαις (lusts) καὶ (and) ἡδοναῖς (pleasures) ποικίλαις (various), ἐν (in) κακίᾳ (malice) καὶ (and) φθόνῳ (envy) διάγοντες (living), στυγητοί (hateful), μισοῦντες (hating) ἀλλήλους (one another).

¹¹ Σπουδάσωμεν (We should be diligent) οὖν (therefore) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter) εἰς (into) ἐκείνην (that) τὴν (-) κατάπαυσιν (rest), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) ἐν (by) τῷ (the) αὐτῷ (same) τις (anyone) ὑποδείγματι (example) πέσῃ (should fall) τῆς (-) ἀπειθείας (of disobedience).

³¹ Πίστει (By faith) Ῥαὰβ (Rahab) ἡ (the) πόρνη (prostitute) οὐ (not) συναπώλετο (did perish with) τοῖς (those) ἀπειθήσασιν (having disobeyed), δεξαμένη (having received) τοὺς (the) κατασκόπους (spies) μετ’ (with) εἰρήνης (peace).

⁸ ὃν (whom) οὐκ (not) ἰδόντες (having seen) ἀγαπᾶτε (you love), εἰς (on) ὃν (whom) ἄρτι (now though) μὴ (not) ὁρῶντες (seeing) πιστεύοντες (believing) δὲ (now) ἀγαλλιᾶσθε (you exult) χαρᾷ (with joy) ἀνεκλαλήτῳ (inexpressible) καὶ (and) δεδοξασμένῃ (filled with glory),

⁸ Καὶ (and), “Λίθος (A stone) προσκόμματος (of stumbling) καὶ (and) πέτρα (a rock) σκανδάλου (of offense).” Οἳ (They) προσκόπτουσιν (stumble at), τῷ (to the) λόγῳ (word) ἀπειθοῦντες (being disobedient), εἰς (to) ὃ (which) καὶ (also) ἐτέθησαν (they were appointed).

³⁴ καὶ (And) εὐλόγησεν (blessed) αὐτοὺς (them) Συμεὼν (Simeon), καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) πρὸς (to) Μαριὰμ (Mary) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother) αὐτοῦ (of Him): “Ἰδοὺ (Behold), οὗτος (this Child) κεῖται (is appointed) εἰς (for) πτῶσιν (the falling) καὶ (and) ἀνάστασιν (rising up) πολλῶν (of many) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Ἰσραὴλ (Israel), καὶ (and) εἰς (for) σημεῖον (a sign) ἀντιλεγόμενον (spoken against) —

²³ ἡμεῖς (we) δὲ (however) κηρύσσομεν (preach) Χριστὸν (Christ) ἐσταυρωμένον (having been crucified), Ἰουδαίοις (to the Jewish) μὲν (indeed) σκάνδαλον (a stumbling block), ἔθνεσιν (to Gentiles) δὲ (now) μωρίαν (foolishness);

⁹ ὅτι (because) οὐκ (not) ἔθετο (has destined) ἡμᾶς (us) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) εἰς (for) ὀργὴν (wrath), ἀλλὰ (but) εἰς (for) περιποίησιν (obtaining) σωτηρίας (salvation) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ),

³ καὶ (And) ἐν (through) πλεονεξίᾳ (covetousness) πλαστοῖς (with fabricated) λόγοις (words) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐμπορεύσονται (they will exploit), οἷς (for whom) τὸ (the) κρίμα (judgment) ἔκπαλαι (of long ago) οὐκ (not) ἀργεῖ (is idle), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἀπώλεια (destruction) αὐτῶν (of them) οὐ (not) νυστάζει (slumbers).

⁴ παρεισέδυσαν* (Came in stealthily) γάρ (for) τινες (certain) ἄνθρωποι (men), οἱ (those) πάλαι (long ago) προγεγραμμένοι (having been designated) εἰς (unto) τοῦτο (this) τὸ (-) κρίμα (condemnation), ἀσεβεῖς (ungodly ones), τὴν (the) τοῦ (of the) Θεοῦ (God) ἡμῶν (of us) χάριτα (grace) μετατιθέντες (changing) εἰς (into) ἀσέλγειαν (sensuality), καὶ (and) τὸν (the) μόνον (only) Δεσπότην (master) καὶ (and) Κύριον (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) Χριστὸν (Christ) ἀρνούμενοι (denying).

¹⁶ ὁ (The) λαὸς (people) ὁ (-) καθήμενος (sitting) ἐν (in) σκοτίᾳ (darkness), φῶς (a light) εἶδεν (have seen) μέγα (great), καὶ (and) τοῖς (to those) καθημένοις (sitting) ἐν (in the) χώρᾳ (land) καὶ (and) σκιᾷ (shadow) θανάτου (of death), φῶς (a light) ἀνέτειλεν (has dawned) αὐτοῖς (on them).”

¹⁶ οὕτως (Thus) λαμψάτω (let shine) τὸ (the) φῶς (light) ὑμῶν (of you) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (men), ὅπως (so that) ἴδωσιν (they may see) ὑμῶν (your) τὰ (-) καλὰ (good) ἔργα (works), καὶ (and) δοξάσωσιν (they should glorify) τὸν (the) πατέρα (Father) ὑμῶν (of you) τὸν (-) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens).

⁷⁹ ἐπιφᾶναι (to shine upon) τοῖς (those) ἐν (in) σκότει (darkness) καὶ (and) σκιᾷ (in the shadow) θανάτου (of death) καθημένοις (sitting); τοῦ (-) κατευθῦναι (to direct) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) ἡμῶν (of us) εἰς (into) ὁδὸν (the way) εἰρήνης (of peace).”

¹⁹ καὶ (and) ὑπὲρ (for) αὐτῶν (them) ἐγὼ (I) ἁγιάζω (sanctify) ἐμαυτόν (Myself), ἵνα (that) ὦσιν (may be) καὶ (also) αὐτοὶ (they) ἡγιασμένοι (sanctified) ἐν (in) ἀληθείᾳ (truth).

²⁸ Προσέχετε (Take heed) ἑαυτοῖς (to yourselves) καὶ (and) παντὶ (to all) τῷ (the) ποιμνίῳ (flock) ἐν (among) ᾧ (which) ὑμᾶς (you) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τὸ (-) Ἅγιον (Holy) ἔθετο (has set) ἐπισκόπους (overseers), ποιμαίνειν (to shepherd) τὴν (the) ἐκκλησίαν (church) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἣν (which) περιεποιήσατο (He purchased) διὰ (with) τοῦ (-) αἵματος (blood) τοῦ (the) ἰδίου (own).

¹⁸ ἀνοῖξαι (to open) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) αὐτῶν (of them), τοῦ (that) ἐπιστρέψαι (they may turn) ἀπὸ (from) σκότους (darkness) εἰς (to) φῶς (light), καὶ (and) τῆς (from the) ἐξουσίας (power) τοῦ (-) Σατανᾶ (of Satan) ἐπὶ (to) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), τοῦ (that) λαβεῖν (may receive) αὐτοὺς (they) ἄφεσιν (forgiveness) ἁμαρτιῶν (of sins) καὶ (and) κλῆρον (an inheritance) ἐν (among) τοῖς (those) ἡγιασμένοις (having been sanctified) πίστει (by faith) τῇ (that is) εἰς (in) ἐμέ (Me).’

²⁸ Ὁ (-) δὲ (Then) Ἀγρίππας (Agrippa) πρὸς (said to) τὸν (-) Παῦλον (Paul), “Ἐν (Within) ὀλίγῳ (so little) με (me) πείθεις (do you persuade) Χριστιανὸν (a Christian) ποιῆσαι (to become)?”

²⁴ οὓς (whom) καὶ (even) ἐκάλεσεν (He has called), ἡμᾶς (us) οὐ (not) μόνον (only) ἐξ (out from) Ἰουδαίων (the Jews), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) ἐξ (out from) ἐθνῶν (the Gentiles)?

¹⁷ εἴ (If) τις (anyone) τὸν (the) ναὸν (temple) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) φθείρει (destroys), φθερεῖ (will destroy) τοῦτον (him) ὁ (-) Θεός (God); ὁ (-) γὰρ (for) ναὸς (the temple) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἅγιός (holy) ἐστιν (is), οἵτινές (which) ἐστε (are) ὑμεῖς (you).

⁶ εἰς (to) ἔπαινον (the praise) δόξης (of the glory) τῆς (of the) χάριτος (of grace) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἧς (which) ἐχαρίτωσεν (He has freely given) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Ἠγαπημένῳ (Beloved One),

¹⁴ ὃς (who) ἔδωκεν (gave) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us), ἵνα (that) λυτρώσηται (He might redeem) ἡμᾶς (us) ἀπὸ (from) πάσης (all) ἀνομίας (lawlessness), καὶ (and) καθαρίσῃ (might purify) ἑαυτῷ (to Himself) λαὸν (a people) περιούσιον (specially chosen), ζηλωτὴν (zealous) καλῶν (of good) ἔργων (works).

¹⁹ Ἀλλὰ (But) λέγω (I ask), μὴ (not) Ἰσραὴλ (Israel) οὐκ (not) ἔγνω (did know)? πρῶτος (First), Μωϋσῆς (Moses) λέγει (says): “Ἐγὼ (I) παραζηλώσω (will provoke to jealousy) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐπ’ (by those) οὐκ (not) ἔθνει (a nation); ἐπ’ (by) ἔθνει (a nation) ἀσυνέτῳ (without understanding), παροργιῶ (I will anger) ὑμᾶς (you).”

⁶ εἰ (If) δὲ (now) χάριτι (by grace), οὐκέτι (no longer) ἐξ (from) ἔργων (works); ἐπεὶ (otherwise) ἡ (-) χάρις (grace) οὐκέτι (no longer) γίνεται (would be) χάρις (grace). ⁷ Τί (What) οὖν (then)? ὃ (What) ἐπιζητεῖ (is seeking) Ἰσραήλ (Israel), τοῦτο (this) οὐκ (not) ἐπέτυχεν (it has obtained); ἡ (-) δὲ (but) ἐκλογὴ (the elect) ἐπέτυχεν (obtained it). οἱ (The) δὲ (now) λοιποὶ (rest) ἐπωρώθησαν (were hardened),

³⁰ Ὥσπερ (Just as) γὰρ (for) ὑμεῖς (you) ποτε (once) ἠπειθήσατε (were disobedient) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), νῦν (now) δὲ (however) ἠλεήθητε (have been shown mercy) τῇ (the) τούτων (of these) ἀπειθείᾳ (disobedience),

²⁵ Περὶ (Concerning) δὲ (now) τῶν (the) παρθένων (virgins), ἐπιταγὴν (a commandment) Κυρίου (of the Lord) οὐκ (not) ἔχω (I have); γνώμην (judgment) δὲ (however) δίδωμι (I give), ὡς (as) ἠλεημένος (having received mercy) ὑπὸ (from) Κυρίου (the Lord), πιστὸς (trustworthy) εἶναι (to be).

¹³ τὸ (-) πρότερον (formerly) ὄντα (being) βλάσφημον (a blasphemer), καὶ (and) διώκτην (a persecutor), καὶ (and) ὑβριστήν (insolent); ἀλλὰ (but) ἠλεήθην (I was shown mercy), ὅτι (because) ἀγνοῶν (being ignorant), ἐποίησα (I did it) ἐν (in) ἀπιστίᾳ (unbelief).

¹⁶ προσερχώμεθα (We should come) οὖν (therefore) μετὰ (with) παρρησίας (boldness) τῷ (to the) θρόνῳ (throne) τῆς (-) χάριτος (of grace), ἵνα (so that) λάβωμεν (we may receive) ἔλεος (mercy) καὶ (and) χάριν (grace) εὕρωμεν (may find) εἰς (for) εὔκαιρον (in time of need) βοήθειαν (help).

³⁴ Προσέχετε (Take heed) δὲ (now) ἑαυτοῖς (to yourselves), μή‿ (lest) ποτε (ever) βαρηθῶσιν (be burdened) ὑμῶν (of you) αἱ (the) καρδίαι (hearts) ἐν (with) κραιπάλῃ (dissipation) καὶ (and) μέθῃ (drunkenness) καὶ (and) μερίμναις (cares) βιωτικαῖς (of life) — καὶ (and) ἐπιστῇ (would come) ἐφ’ (upon) ὑμᾶς (you) αἰφνίδιος (suddenly) ἡ (the) ἡμέρα (day) ἐκείνη (that) ὡς (as) παγίς (a snare).

²⁰ ἀλλὰ (but) ἐπιστεῖλαι (to write) αὐτοῖς (to them) τοῦ (-) ἀπέχεσθαι (to abstain from) τῶν (the) ἀλισγημάτων (pollutions) τῶν (of the) εἰδώλων (idols), καὶ (and) τῆς (-) πορνείας (sexual immorality), καὶ (and) ‹τοῦ› (that) πνικτοῦ (which is strangled), καὶ (and) τοῦ (from) αἵματος (blood).

²⁹ ἀπέχεσθαι (to abstain) εἰδωλοθύτων (from things sacrificed to idols), καὶ (and) αἵματος (from blood), καὶ (and) πνικτῶν (from what is strangled), καὶ (and) πορνείας (from sexual immorality). ἐξ (From) ὧν (these) διατηροῦντες (keeping) ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves), εὖ (well) πράξετε (you will do). Ἔρρωσθε (Farewell).”

²³ βλέπω (I see) δὲ (however) ἕτερον (another) νόμον (law) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) μέλεσίν (members) μου (of me), ἀντιστρατευόμενον (warring against) τῷ (the) νόμῳ (law) τοῦ (of the) νοός (mind) μου (of me), καὶ (and) αἰχμαλωτίζοντά (making captive) με (me) ἐν (to) τῷ (the) νόμῳ (law) τῆς (-) ἁμαρτίας (of sin), τῷ (-) ὄντι (being) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) μέλεσίν (members) μου (of me).

¹³ εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (flesh) ζῆτε (you live), μέλλετε (you are about) ἀποθνήσκειν (to die); εἰ (if) δὲ (however) πνεύματι (by the Spirit) τὰς (the) πράξεις (deeds) τοῦ (of the) σώματος (body) θανατοῦτε (you put to death), ζήσεσθε (you will live).

¹³ ὡς (As) ἐν (in) ἡμέρᾳ (daytime), εὐσχημόνως (properly) περιπατήσωμεν (we should walk), μὴ (not) κώμοις (in reveling) καὶ (and) μέθαις (drinking), μὴ (not) κοίταις (in sexual immorality) καὶ (and) ἀσελγείαις (sensuality), μὴ (not) ἔριδι (in dissension) καὶ (and) ζήλῳ (jealousy). ¹⁴ ἀλλὰ (But) ἐνδύσασθε (put on) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) Χριστόν (Christ), καὶ (and) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh) πρόνοιαν (provision) μὴ (not) ποιεῖσθε (make) εἰς (for) ἐπιθυμίας (desires).

²⁰ Ὑπὲρ (For) Χριστοῦ (Christ) οὖν (therefore) πρεσβεύομεν (we are ambassadors), ὡς (as though) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) παρακαλοῦντος (is beseeching) δι’ (through) ἡμῶν (us). δεόμεθα (We implore) ὑπὲρ (on behalf) Χριστοῦ (of Christ): καταλλάγητε (Be reconciled) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God).

¹ Συνεργοῦντες (Working together) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) παρακαλοῦμεν (we exhort) μὴ (not) εἰς (in) κενὸν (vain) τὴν (the) χάριν (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) δέξασθαι (to receive) ὑμᾶς (you).

¹ Ταύτας (These) οὖν (therefore) ἔχοντες (having) τὰς (-) ἐπαγγελίας (promises), ἀγαπητοί (beloved), καθαρίσωμεν (we should cleanse) ἑαυτοὺς (ourselves) ἀπὸ (from) παντὸς (every) μολυσμοῦ (defilement) σαρκὸς (of flesh) καὶ (and) πνεύματος (spirit), ἐπιτελοῦντες (perfecting) ἁγιωσύνην (holiness) ἐν (in) φόβῳ (the fear) Θεοῦ (of God).

¹⁶ Λέγω (I say) δέ (now), Πνεύματι (by the Spirit) περιπατεῖτε (walk), καὶ (and) ἐπιθυμίαν (the desire) σαρκὸς (of the flesh) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) τελέσητε (you should gratify). ¹⁷ ἡ (The) γὰρ (for) σὰρξ (flesh) ἐπιθυμεῖ (desires), κατὰ (against) τοῦ (the) Πνεύματος (Spirit), τὸ (-) δὲ (and) Πνεῦμα (the Spirit) κατὰ (against) τῆς (the) σαρκός (flesh); ταῦτα (these) γὰρ (for) ἀλλήλοις (to one another) ἀντίκειται (are opposed), ἵνα (in order) μὴ (not) ἃ (that) ἐὰν (if) θέλητε (you might wish) ταῦτα (those things) ποιῆτε (you should do). ¹⁸ εἰ (If) δὲ (however) Πνεύματι (the Spirit) ἄγεσθε (you are led by), οὐκ (not) ἐστὲ (you are) ὑπὸ (under) νόμον (the Law). ¹⁹ Φανερὰ (Evident) δέ (now) ἐστιν (are) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) τῆς (of the) σαρκός (flesh), ἅτινά (which) ἐστιν (are) πορνεία (sexual immorality), ἀκαθαρσία (impurity), ἀσέλγεια (sensuality), ²⁰ εἰδωλολατρία (idolatry), φαρμακεία (sorcery), ἔχθραι (enmities), ἔρις (strife), ζῆλος (jealousy), θυμοί (outbursts of anger), ἐριθεῖαι (contentions), διχοστασίαι (dissensions), αἱρέσεις (factions), ²¹ φθόνοι (envyings), μέθαι (drunkennesses), κῶμοι (carousing), καὶ (and) τὰ (things) ὅμοια (like) τούτοις (these), ἃ (as to which) προλέγω (I forewarn) ὑμῖν (you), καθὼς (even as) προεῖπον (I warned before), ὅτι (that) οἱ (those) τὰ (such) τοιαῦτα (things) πράσσοντες (doing), βασιλείαν (kingdom) Θεοῦ (God’s) οὐ (not) κληρονομήσουσιν (will inherit).

²⁴ Οἱ (Those) δὲ (now) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), τὴν (the) σάρκα (flesh) ἐσταύρωσαν (have crucified) σὺν (with) τοῖς (its) παθήμασιν (passions) καὶ (and) ταῖς (-) ἐπιθυμίαις (desires).

¹ Παρακαλῶ (Exhort) οὖν (therefore) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐγὼ (I), ὁ (the) δέσμιος (prisoner) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord), ἀξίως (worthily) περιπατῆσαι (to walk) τῆς (of the) κλήσεως (calling) ἧς (to which) ἐκλήθητε (you were called),

⁹ Οἱ (Those) δὲ (however) βουλόμενοι (desiring) πλουτεῖν (to be rich) ἐμπίπτουσιν (fall) εἰς (into) πειρασμὸν (temptation) καὶ (and) παγίδα (a snare), καὶ (and) ἐπιθυμίας (desires) πολλὰς (many) ἀνοήτους (foolish) καὶ (and) βλαβεράς (harmful), αἵτινες (which) βυθίζουσιν (plunge) τοὺς (-) ἀνθρώπους (men) εἰς (into) ὄλεθρον (ruin) καὶ (and) ἀπώλειαν (destruction). ¹⁰ ῥίζα (A root) γὰρ (for) πάντων (of all kinds) τῶν (-) κακῶν (of evils) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) φιλαργυρία (love of money), ἧς (which) τινες (some) ὀρεγόμενοι (stretching after) ἀπεπλανήθησαν (have been seduced) ἀπὸ (away from) τῆς (the) πίστεως (faith), καὶ (and) ἑαυτοὺς (themselves) περιέπειραν (have pierced) ὀδύναις (with sorrows) πολλαῖς (many).

²² Τὰς (-) δὲ (And) νεωτερικὰς (youthful) ἐπιθυμίας (lusts) φεῦγε (flee); δίωκε (pursue) δὲ (now) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness), πίστιν (faith), ἀγάπην (love), εἰρήνην (and peace), μετὰ (along with) τῶν (those) ἐπικαλουμένων (calling on) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) ἐκ (out of) καθαρᾶς (pure) καρδίας (a heart).

⁹ διὰ (for the sake of) τὴν (-) ἀγάπην (love), μᾶλλον (rather) παρακαλῶ (I exhort you), τοιοῦτος (such a one) ὢν (being), ὡς (as) Παῦλος (Paul) πρεσβύτης (aged), νυνὶ (now) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) δέσμιος (a prisoner) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus). ¹⁰ Παρακαλῶ (I exhort) σε (you) περὶ (for) τοῦ (-) ἐμοῦ (my) τέκνου (child), ὃν (whom) ἐγέννησα (I have begotten) ἐν (in) τοῖς (-) δεσμοῖς (chains), Ὀνήσιμον (Onesimus),

⁸ Ἰδόντες (Having seen) δὲ (now), οἱ (the) ὄχλοι (crowds) ἐφοβήθησαν (marveled) καὶ (and) ἐδόξασαν (glorified) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God), τὸν (the One) δόντα (having given) ἐξουσίαν (authority) τοιαύτην (such) τοῖς (-) ἀνθρώποις (to men).

²⁵ ἀρκετὸν (It is sufficient) τῷ (for the) μαθητῇ (disciple) ἵνα (that) γένηται (he become) ὡς (as) ὁ (the) διδάσκαλος (teacher) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) δοῦλος (servant) ὡς (as) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) αὐτοῦ (of him). εἰ (If) τὸν (the) οἰκοδεσπότην (master of the house) Βεελζεβοὺλ (Beelzebul) ἐπεκάλεσαν (they called), πόσῳ (how much) μᾶλλον (more) τοὺς (those) οἰκιακοὺς (house members) αὐτοῦ (of him)!

⁶⁸ “Εὐλογητὸς (Blessed be) Κύριος (the Lord) ὁ (the) Θεὸς (God) τοῦ (-) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel), ὅτι (because) ἐπεσκέψατο (He has visited) καὶ (and) ἐποίησεν (has performed) λύτρωσιν (redemption) τῷ (on the) λαῷ (people) αὐτοῦ (of Him),

⁴⁴ καὶ (and) ἐδαφιοῦσίν (will level to the ground) σε (you) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children) σου (of you) ἐν (within) σοί (you), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἀφήσουσιν (will leave) λίθον (a stone) ἐπὶ (upon) λίθον (a stone) ἐν (within) σοί (you), ἀνθ’ (in place of) ὧν (which) οὐκ (not) ἔγνως (you knew) τὸν (the) καιρὸν (season) τῆς (the) ἐπισκοπῆς (of visitation) σου (of you).”

¹⁴ Συμεὼν (Simeon) ἐξηγήσατο (has related) καθὼς (how) πρῶτον (first) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐπεσκέψατο (visited), λαβεῖν (to take) ἐξ (out of) ἐθνῶν (the Gentiles) λαὸν (a people) τῷ (for the) ὀνόματι (name) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

⁵ Εὑρόντες (Having found) γὰρ (for) τὸν (the) ἄνδρα (man) τοῦτον (this) λοιμὸν (a pest), καὶ (and) κινοῦντα (stirring) στάσεις (insurrection) πᾶσιν (among all) τοῖς (the) Ἰουδαίοις (Jews) τοῖς (-) κατὰ (in) τὴν (the) οἰκουμένην (world), πρωτοστάτην (a leader) τε (then) τῆς (of the) τῶν (of the) Ναζωραίων (Nazarenes) αἱρέσεως (sect), ⁶ ὃς (who) καὶ (even) τὸ (the) ἱερὸν (temple) ἐπείρασεν (attempted) βεβηλῶσαι (to profane), ὃν (whom) καὶ (also) ἐκρατήσαμεν (we seized).

¹³ οὐδὲ (Nor) παραστῆσαι (to prove) δύνανταί (are they able) σοι (to you), περὶ (concerning) ὧν (the things of which) νυνὶ (now) κατηγοροῦσίν (they accuse) μου (me).

⁷ παραγενομένου (Having arrived) δὲ (then) αὐτοῦ (he), περιέστησαν (stood around) αὐτὸν (him) οἱ (the) ἀπὸ (from) Ἱεροσολύμων (Jerusalem) καταβεβηκότες (having come down) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews), πολλὰ (many) καὶ (and) βαρέα (weighty) αἰτιώματα (charges) καταφέροντες (bringing), ἃ (which) οὐκ (not) ἴσχυον (they were able) ἀποδεῖξαι (to prove).

¹⁷ μηδενὶ (To no one) κακὸν (evil) ἀντὶ (for) κακοῦ (evil) ἀποδιδόντες (repaying), προνοούμενοι (providing) καλὰ (right) ἐνώπιον (before) πάντων (all) ἀνθρώπων (men);

²⁵ τὰ (the) κρυπτὰ (secrets) τῆς (of the) καρδίας (heart) αὐτοῦ (of him) φανερὰ (manifest) γίνεται (become). καὶ (And) οὕτως (thus) πεσὼν (having fallen) ἐπὶ (upon) πρόσωπον (his face), προσκυνήσει (he will worship) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God), ἀπαγγέλλων (declaring) ὅτι (that) Ὄντως (certainly) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) ἐστιν (is).

²¹ προνοοῦμεν (We are taking great care to do) γὰρ (for) καλὰ (what is right), οὐ (not) μόνον (only) ἐνώπιον (before) Κυρίου (the Lord), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) ἐνώπιον (before) ἀνθρώπων (men).

³ ἐν (among) οἷς (whom) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we) πάντες (all) ἀνεστράφημέν (lived) ποτε (once) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἐπιθυμίαις (desires) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh) ἡμῶν (of us), ποιοῦντες (doing) τὰ (the) θελήματα (things willed) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh), καὶ (and) τῶν (of its) διανοιῶν (thoughts); καὶ (and) ἤμεθα (we were) τέκνα (children), φύσει (by nature), ὀργῆς (of wrath), ὡς (as) καὶ (even) οἱ (the) λοιποί (rest).

²² ἀποθέσθαι (Are to have put off) ὑμᾶς (you), κατὰ (concerning) τὴν (the) προτέραν (former) ἀναστροφὴν (way of life), τὸν (the) παλαιὸν (old) ἄνθρωπον (man), τὸν (which) φθειρόμενον (is being corrupted), κατὰ (according to) τὰς (its) ἐπιθυμίας (desires) τῆς (-) ἀπάτης (of deceit),

²⁷ Μόνον (Only) ἀξίως (worthily) τοῦ (of the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) πολιτεύεσθε (conduct yourselves), ἵνα (so that) εἴτε (whether) ἐλθὼν (having come) καὶ (and) ἰδὼν (having seen) ὑμᾶς (you), εἴτε (or) ἀπὼν (being absent), ἀκούω (I might hear) τὰ (the things) περὶ (concerning) ὑμῶν (you), ὅτι (that) στήκετε (you are standing firm) ἐν (in) ἑνὶ (one) πνεύματι (spirit), μιᾷ (with one) ψυχῇ (mind) συναθλοῦντες (striving together) τῇ (for the) πίστει (faith) τοῦ (of the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel),

⁸ Τὸ (-) λοιπόν (Finally), ἀδελφοί (brothers), ὅσα (whatever) ἐστὶν (is) ἀληθῆ (true), ὅσα (whatever) σεμνά (venerable), ὅσα (whatever) δίκαια (right), ὅσα (whatever) ἁγνά (pure), ὅσα (whatever) προσφιλῆ (lovely), ὅσα (whatever) εὔφημα (admirable) — εἴ (if) τις (any) ἀρετὴ (excellence) καὶ (and) εἴ (if) τις (any) ἔπαινος (praise) — ταῦτα (these things) λογίζεσθε (think on).

¹² ἵνα (so that) περιπατῆτε (you may walk) εὐσχημόνως (properly) πρὸς (toward) τοὺς (those) ἔξω (outside), καὶ (and) μηδενὸς (of no one) χρείαν (need) ἔχητε (may have).

² ὑπὲρ (for) βασιλέων (kings) καὶ (and) πάντων (all) τῶν (those) ἐν (in) ὑπεροχῇ (authority) ὄντων (being), ἵνα (so that) ἤρεμον (a tranquil) καὶ (and) ἡσύχιον (quiet) βίον (life) διάγωμεν (we may lead), ἐν (in) πάσῃ (all) εὐσεβείᾳ (godliness) καὶ (and) σεμνότητι (dignity).

¹² Μηδείς (No one) σου (your) τῆς (-) νεότητος (youth) καταφρονείτω (let despise), ἀλλὰ (but) τύπος (a pattern) γίνου (be) τῶν (for the) πιστῶν (believers) ἐν (in) λόγῳ (speech), ἐν (in) ἀναστροφῇ (conduct), ἐν (in) ἀγάπῃ (love), ἐν (in) πίστει (faith), ἐν (in) ἁγνείᾳ (purity).

⁷ Περὶ (In) πάντα (all things) σεαυτὸν (yourself) παρεχόμενος (be holding forth) τύπον (as a pattern) καλῶν (of good) ἔργων (works); ἐν (in) τῇ (the) διδασκαλίᾳ (teaching) ἀφθορίαν (integrity), σεμνότητα (dignity), ⁸ λόγον (speech) ὑγιῆ (sound), ἀκατάγνωστον (beyond reproach), ἵνα (so that) ὁ (he who is) ἐξ (of the) ἐναντίας (contrary) ἐντραπῇ (may be ashamed), μηδὲν (nothing) ἔχων (having) λέγειν (to say) περὶ (concerning) ἡμῶν (us) φαῦλον (evil).

⁵ Ἀφιλάργυρος (Let be without covetousness) ὁ (your) τρόπος (manner of life), ἀρκούμενοι (being satisfied) τοῖς (with the) παροῦσιν (present); αὐτὸς (He Himself) γὰρ (for) εἴρηκεν (has said): “Οὐ (Never) μή (not) σε (you) ἀνῶ (will I leave), οὐδ’ (nor) οὐ (never) μή (not) σε (you) ἐγκαταλίπω (will I forsake).”

¹⁸ Προσεύχεσθε (Pray) περὶ (for) ἡμῶν (us); πειθόμεθα (we are persuaded) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) καλὴν (a good) συνείδησιν (conscience) ἔχομεν (we have), ἐν (in) πᾶσιν (all things) καλῶς (well) θέλοντες (desiring) ἀναστρέφεσθαι (to conduct ourselves).

¹³ Τίς (Who) σοφὸς (is wise) καὶ (and) ἐπιστήμων (understanding) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you); δειξάτω (let him show) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) καλῆς (good) ἀναστροφῆς (conduct) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἐν (in) πραΰτητι (the humility) σοφίας (of wisdom).

¹ Ὁμοίως (Likewise) [αἱ] (-) γυναῖκες (wives), ὑποτασσόμεναι (be subject) τοῖς (to the) ἰδίοις (own) ἀνδράσιν (husbands), ἵνα (so that), καὶ (even) εἴ (if) τινες (any) ἀπειθοῦσιν (are disobedient) τῷ (to the) λόγῳ (word), διὰ (by) τῆς (the) τῶν (of the) γυναικῶν (wives) ἀναστροφῆς (conduct), ἄνευ (without) λόγου (word), κερδηθήσονται (they will be won over), ² ἐποπτεύσαντες (having witnessed) τὴν (the) ἐν (in) φόβῳ (respect) ἁγνὴν (pure) ἀναστροφὴν (conduct) ὑμῶν (of you),

¹⁶ συνείδησιν (a conscience) ἔχοντες (having) ἀγαθήν (good), ἵνα (so that) ἐν (in) ᾧ (this) καταλαλεῖσθε (they might speak against you), καταισχυνθῶσιν (they shall be ashamed) οἱ (those) ἐπηρεάζοντες (reviling) ὑμῶν (your) τὴν (-) ἀγαθὴν (good) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) ἀναστροφήν (manner of life).

¹⁴ Εἰ (If) ὀνειδίζεσθε (you are insulted) ἐν (in) ὀνόματι (the name) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), μακάριοι (you are blessed), ὅτι (because) τὸ (the) τῆς (-) δόξης (of glory) καὶ (and) τὸ (-) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) ἐφ’ (upon) ὑμᾶς (you) ἀναπαύεται (rests). ¹⁵ μὴ (Not) γάρ (for) τις (any) ὑμῶν (of you) πασχέτω (let suffer) ὡς (as) φονεὺς (a murderer), ἢ (or) κλέπτης (a thief), ἢ (or) κακοποιὸς (an evildoer), ἢ (or) ὡς (as) ἀλλοτριεπίσκοπος (a troublesome meddler); ¹⁶ εἰ (if) δὲ (however) ὡς (as) Χριστιανός (a Christian), μὴ (not) αἰσχυνέσθω (let him be ashamed); δοξαζέτω (let him glorify) δὲ (however) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) τούτῳ (this).

¹¹ Τούτων (These things) οὕτως (in this way) πάντων (all) λυομένων (being dissolved), ποταποὺς (what kind) δεῖ (ought) ὑπάρχειν (to be) ὑμᾶς (you)? ἐν (In) ἁγίαις (holy) ἀναστροφαῖς (conduct) καὶ (and) εὐσεβείαις (godliness),

²¹ Λέγουσιν (They say) ‹αὐτῷ› (to Him) “Καίσαρος (Caesar’s).” Τότε (Then) λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἀπόδοτε (Give back) οὖν (therefore) τὰ (the things) Καίσαρος (of Caesar) Καίσαρι (to Caesar), καὶ (and) τὰ (the things) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God).”

¹⁷ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Τὰ (The things) Καίσαρος (of Caesar), ἀπόδοτε (give back) Καίσαρι (to Caesar), καὶ (and) τὰ (the things) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God).” Καὶ (And) ἐξεθαύμαζον (they were amazed) ἐπ’ (at) αὐτῷ (Him).

¹ Πᾶσα (Every) ψυχὴ (soul) ἐξουσίαις (to the authorities) ὑπερεχούσαις (being above him) ὑποτασσέσθω (let be subject). οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ἔστιν (there is) ἐξουσία (authority), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὑπὸ (by) Θεοῦ (God); αἱ (those) δὲ (however) οὖσαι (existing), ὑπὸ (by) Θεοῦ (God) τεταγμέναι (having been instituted) εἰσίν (are). ² ὥστε (Therefore) ὁ (the one) ἀντιτασσόμενος (resisting) τῇ (the) ἐξουσίᾳ (authority), τῇ (the) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) διαταγῇ (ordinance) ἀνθέστηκεν (has resisted); οἱ (those) δὲ (now) ἀνθεστηκότες (having resisted) ἑαυτοῖς (upon themselves) κρίμα (judgment) λήμψονται (will bring). ³ οἱ (The) γὰρ (for) ἄρχοντες (rulers) οὐκ (not) εἰσὶν (are) φόβος (a terror) τῷ (-) ἀγαθῷ (to good) ἔργῳ (works), ἀλλὰ (but) τῷ (-) κακῷ (to evil). θέλεις (Do you desire) δὲ (now) μὴ (not) φοβεῖσθαι (to fear) τὴν (the) ἐξουσίαν (authority)? τὸ (The) ἀγαθὸν (good) ποίει (do), καὶ (and) ἕξεις (you will have) ἔπαινον (praise) ἐξ (from) αὐτῆς (him). ⁴ Θεοῦ (Of God) γὰρ (for) διάκονός (servant) ἐστιν (he is) σοὶ (to you) εἰς (for) τὸ (-) ἀγαθόν (good). ἐὰν (If) δὲ (however) τὸ (-) κακὸν (evil) ποιῇς (you do), φοβοῦ (be afraid), οὐ (not) γὰρ (for) εἰκῇ (in vain) τὴν (the) μάχαιραν (sword) φορεῖ (he bears); Θεοῦ (of God) γὰρ (for) διάκονός (a servant) ἐστιν (He is), ἔκδικος (an avenger) εἰς (for) ὀργὴν (wrath) τῷ (to the one) τὸ (-) κακὸν (evil) πράσσοντι (doing). ⁵ Διὸ (Therefore) ἀνάγκη (necessary it is) ὑποτάσσεσθαι (to be subject), οὐ (not) μόνον (only) διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) ὀργὴν (wrath), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) συνείδησιν (conscience). ⁶ διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this) γὰρ (for), καὶ (also) φόρους (taxes) τελεῖτε (pay you); λειτουργοὶ (servants) γὰρ (for) Θεοῦ (of God) εἰσιν (they are), εἰς (upon) αὐτὸ (this very) τοῦτο (thing) προσκαρτεροῦντες (attending continually). ⁷ ἀπόδοτε (Render) πᾶσιν (to all) τὰς (their) ὀφειλάς (dues), τῷ (to whom) τὸν (the) φόρον (tax), τὸν (the) φόρον (tax); τῷ (to whom) τὸ (the) τέλος (revenue), τὸ (the) τέλος (revenue); τῷ (to whom) τὸν (the) φόβον (respect), τὸν (the) φόβον (respect); τῷ (to whom) τὴν (the) τιμὴν (honor), τὴν (the) τιμήν (honor).

¹ Παρακαλῶ (I exhort) οὖν (therefore), πρῶτον (first) πάντων (of all), ποιεῖσθαι (to be made) δεήσεις (entreaties), προσευχάς (prayers), ἐντεύξεις (intercessions), εὐχαριστίας (and thanksgivings), ὑπὲρ (on behalf of) πάντων (all) ἀνθρώπων (men), ² ὑπὲρ (for) βασιλέων (kings) καὶ (and) πάντων (all) τῶν (those) ἐν (in) ὑπεροχῇ (authority) ὄντων (being), ἵνα (so that) ἤρεμον (a tranquil) καὶ (and) ἡσύχιον (quiet) βίον (life) διάγωμεν (we may lead), ἐν (in) πάσῃ (all) εὐσεβείᾳ (godliness) καὶ (and) σεμνότητι (dignity).

²⁶ καὶ (And) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ἀκούων (hearing) μου (My) τοὺς (-) λόγους (words) τούτους (these), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ποιῶν (doing) αὐτοὺς (them), ὁμοιωθήσεται (he will be likened) ἀνδρὶ (to a man) μωρῷ (foolish), ὅστις (who) ᾠκοδόμησεν (built) αὐτοῦ (of him) τὴν (the) οἰκίαν (house) ἐπὶ (upon) τὴν (the) ἄμμον (sand).

² πέντε (Five) δὲ (now) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them) ἦσαν (were) μωραὶ (foolish), καὶ (and) πέντε (five) φρόνιμοι (wise).

²¹ Διότι (For) γνόντες (having known) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God), οὐχ (not) ὡς (as) Θεὸν (God) ἐδόξασαν (they glorified Him), ἢ (or) ηὐχαρίστησαν (were thankful), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐματαιώθησαν (they became futile) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) διαλογισμοῖς (thinking) αὐτῶν (of them), καὶ (and) ἐσκοτίσθη (was darkened) ἡ (the) ἀσύνετος (foolish) αὐτῶν (of them) καρδία (heart).

¹ Ὦ (O) ἀνόητοι (foolish) Γαλάται (Galatians)! τίς (Who) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐβάσκανεν (has bewitched), οἷς (whose) κατ’ (before) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) Χριστὸς (Christ) προεγράφη (was publicly portrayed) ἐσταυρωμένος (as having been crucified)?

⁶ μὴ (not) κατ’ (with) ὀφθαλμοδουλίαν (eye-service) ὡς (as) ἀνθρωπάρεσκοι (men-pleasers), ἀλλ’ (but) ὡς (as) δοῦλοι (servants of) Χριστοῦ (Christ), ποιοῦντες (doing) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐκ (from) ψυχῆς (the heart), ⁷ μετ’ (with) εὐνοίας (good will) δουλεύοντες (rendering service), ὡς (as) τῷ (to the) Κυρίῳ (Lord) καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἀνθρώποις (to men),

³ Τοῦτο (This) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is) θέλημα (the will) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ὁ (the) ἁγιασμὸς (sanctification) ὑμῶν (of you): ἀπέχεσθαι (To abstain) ὑμᾶς (you are) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (-) πορνείας (sexual immorality);

¹⁸ ἐν (In) παντὶ (everything) εὐχαριστεῖτε (give thanks); τοῦτο (this) γὰρ (for) θέλημα (is the will) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) εἰς (toward) ὑμᾶς (you).

⁸ λόγον (speech) ὑγιῆ (sound), ἀκατάγνωστον (beyond reproach), ἵνα (so that) ὁ (he who is) ἐξ (of the) ἐναντίας (contrary) ἐντραπῇ (may be ashamed), μηδὲν (nothing) ἔχων (having) λέγειν (to say) περὶ (concerning) ἡμῶν (us) φαῦλον (evil).

¹² τὴν (the) ἀναστροφὴν (conduct) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐν (among) τοῖς (the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles) ἔχοντες (keeping) καλήν (honorable), ἵνα (so that) ἐν (wherein) ᾧ (which) καταλαλοῦσιν (they speak against) ὑμῶν (you) ὡς (as) κακοποιῶν (evildoers), ἐκ (through) τῶν (the) καλῶν (good) ἔργων (deeds) ἐποπτεύοντες (having witnessed), δοξάσωσιν (they may glorify) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) ἐν (in) ἡμέρᾳ (the day) ἐπισκοπῆς (of visitation).

¹⁷ κρεῖττον (It is better) γὰρ (for) ἀγαθοποιοῦντας (doing good) εἰ (if) θέλοι (wills it) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), πάσχειν (to suffer), ἢ (than) κακοποιοῦντας (doing evil),

¹² Οὗτοι (These) δέ (however), ὡς (like) ἄλογα (irrational) ζῷα (animals), γεγεννημένα (having been born) φυσικὰ (as creatures of instinct) εἰς (for) ἅλωσιν (capture) καὶ (and) φθοράν (destruction), ἐν (in) οἷς (what) ἀγνοοῦσιν (they are ignorant of), βλασφημοῦντες (blaspheming), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) φθορᾷ (destruction) αὐτῶν (of them) καὶ (also) φθαρήσονται (will be destroyed),

¹⁰ οὗτοι (These) δὲ (however), ὅσα (whatever things) μὲν (indeed) οὐκ (not) οἴδασιν (they have seen) βλασφημοῦσιν (they speak evil of); ὅσα (whatever things) δὲ (then) φυσικῶς (naturally), ὡς (as) τὰ (the) ἄλογα (irrational) ζῷα (animals), ἐπίστανται (they understand), ἐν (in) τούτοις (these things) φθείρονται (they corrupt themselves).

¹³ Οὐαὶ (Woe) δὲ (however) ὑμῖν (to you), γραμματεῖς (scribes) καὶ (and) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), ὑποκριταί (hypocrites)! ὅτι (For) κλείετε (you shut up) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (men); ὑμεῖς (You) γὰρ (for) οὐκ (neither) εἰσέρχεσθε (enter), οὐδὲ (nor even) τοὺς (those who) εἰσερχομένους (are entering) ἀφίετε (do you allow) εἰσελθεῖν (to go in).

³² καὶ (And) γνώσεσθε (you will know) τὴν (the) ἀλήθειαν (truth), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἀλήθεια (truth) ἐλευθερώσει (will set free) ὑμᾶς (you).” ³³ Ἀπεκρίθησαν (They answered) πρὸς (unto) αὐτόν (Him), “Σπέρμα (Seed) Ἀβραάμ (of Abraham) ἐσμεν (we are), καὶ (and) οὐδενὶ (to no one) δεδουλεύκαμεν (have we been under bondage) πώποτε (ever). πῶς (How) σὺ (You) λέγεις (say) ὅτι (-), ‘Ἐλεύθεροι (Free) γενήσεσθε (you will become)’?” ³⁴ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) αὐτοῖς (them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ποιῶν (practicing) τὴν (the) ἁμαρτίαν (sin), δοῦλός (a slave) ἐστιν (is) τῆς (of the) ἁμαρτίας (sin). ³⁵ ὁ (-) δὲ (Now) δοῦλος (the slave) οὐ (not) μένει (abides) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) οἰκίᾳ (house) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age); ὁ (the) υἱὸς (son) μένει (abides) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age). ³⁶ ἐὰν (If) οὖν (therefore) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐλευθερώσῃ (shall set free), ὄντως (indeed) ἐλεύθεροι (free) ἔσεσθε (you will be).

²² εἰ (If) μὴ (not) ἦλθον (I had come) καὶ (and) ἐλάλησα (spoken) αὐτοῖς (to them), ἁμαρτίαν (sin) οὐκ (not) εἴχοσαν (they would have had); νῦν (now) δὲ (however) πρόφασιν (excuse) οὐκ (not) ἔχουσιν (they have) περὶ (for) τῆς (the) ἁμαρτίας (sin) αὐτῶν (of them).

¹ Τῇ (In) ἐλευθερίᾳ (freedom), ἡμᾶς (us) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἠλευθέρωσεν (has set free); στήκετε (stand firm), οὖν (therefore), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) πάλιν (again) ζυγῷ (in a yoke) δουλείας (of slavery) ἐνέχεσθε (entangle yourselves).

¹³ Ὑμεῖς (You) γὰρ (for) ἐπ’ (to) ἐλευθερίᾳ (freedom) ἐκλήθητε (were called), ἀδελφοί (brothers); μόνον (but) μὴ (not) τὴν (the) ἐλευθερίαν (freedom) εἰς (for) ἀφορμὴν (an opportunity) τῇ (to the) σαρκί (flesh). ἀλλὰ (Rather) διὰ (through) τῆς (-) ἀγάπης (love), δουλεύετε (serve) ἀλλήλοις (one another).

⁶ μὴ (not) κατ’ (with) ὀφθαλμοδουλίαν (eye-service) ὡς (as) ἀνθρωπάρεσκοι (men-pleasers), ἀλλ’ (but) ὡς (as) δοῦλοι (servants of) Χριστοῦ (Christ), ποιοῦντες (doing) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐκ (from) ψυχῆς (the heart),

²⁴ εἰδότες (knowing) ὅτι (that) ἀπὸ (from) Κυρίου (the Lord) ἀπολήμψεσθε (you will receive) τὴν (the) ἀνταπόδοσιν (reward) τῆς (of the) κληρονομίας (inheritance). τῷ (The) Κυρίῳ (Lord) Χριστῷ (Christ) δουλεύετε (you serve).

⁵ οὔτε (Never) γάρ (for) ποτε (at any time) ἐν (with) λόγῳ (word) κολακείας* (of flattery) ἐγενήθημεν (were we), καθὼς (just as) οἴδατε (you know), οὔτε (nor) ἐν (with) προφάσει (a pretext) πλεονεξίας (for greed) — Θεὸς (God is) μάρτυς (witness) —

²⁵ ὁ (The one) δὲ (however) παρακύψας (having looked intently) εἰς (into) νόμον (the law) τέλειον (perfect), τὸν (that) τῆς (-) ἐλευθερίας (of freedom), καὶ (and) παραμείνας (having continued in it), οὐκ (not) ἀκροατὴς (a hearer) ἐπιλησμονῆς (forgetful) γενόμενος (having been), ἀλλὰ (but) ποιητὴς (a doer) ἔργου (of the work)— οὗτος (this one) μακάριος (blessed) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ποιήσει (work) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἔσται (will be).

³⁵ ἐν (By) τούτῳ (this) γνώσονται (will know) πάντες (all) ὅτι (that) ἐμοὶ (to Me) μαθηταί (disciples) ἐστε (you are), ἐὰν (if) ἀγάπην (love) ἔχητε (you have) ἐν (among) ἀλλήλοις (one another).”

³ μηδὲν (nothing) κατ’ (according to) ἐριθείαν (self-interest) μηδὲ (or) κατὰ (according to) κενοδοξίαν (vain conceit), ἀλλὰ (but) τῇ (-) ταπεινοφροσύνῃ (in humility) ἀλλήλους (one another) ἡγούμενοι (be esteeming) ὑπερέχοντας (surpassing) ἑαυτῶν (themselves),

²³ ὃς (who) παραγενόμενος (having come) καὶ (and) ἰδὼν (having seen) τὴν (the) χάριν (grace) τὴν (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God), ἐχάρη (rejoiced) καὶ (and) παρεκάλει (was exhorting) πάντας (all) τῇ (with) προθέσει (resolute purpose) τῆς (-) καρδίας (of heart) προσμένειν (to abide) (ἐν) (in) τῷ (the) Κυρίῳ (Lord).

⁵ Διὸ (Therefore) ἀνάγκη (necessary it is) ὑποτάσσεσθαι (to be subject), οὐ (not) μόνον (only) διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) ὀργὴν (wrath), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) συνείδησιν (conscience).

¹² Δι’ (For) ἣν (this) αἰτίαν (reason) καὶ (also) ταῦτα (these things) πάσχω (I suffer). ἀλλ’ (But) οὐκ (not) ἐπαισχύνομαι (I am ashamed); οἶδα (I know) γὰρ (for) ᾧ (whom) πεπίστευκα (I have believed), καὶ (and) πέπεισμαι (I am persuaded) ὅτι (that) δυνατός (able) ἐστιν (He is) τὴν (the) παραθήκην (deposit entrusted) μου (of me) φυλάξαι (to guard) εἰς (for) ἐκείνην (that) τὴν (-) ἡμέραν (day).

²⁰ ποῖον (What kind of) γὰρ (for) κλέος (credit is it), εἰ (if) ἁμαρτάνοντες (sinning) καὶ (and) κολαφιζόμενοι (being struck) ὑπομενεῖτε (you shall endure)? ἀλλ’ (But) εἰ (if) ἀγαθοποιοῦντες (doing good) καὶ (and) πάσχοντες (suffering) ὑπομενεῖτε (you shall endure), τοῦτο (this is) χάρις (commendable) παρὰ (before) Θεῷ (God).

¹⁴ Ἀλλ’ (But) εἰ (if) καὶ (even) πάσχοιτε (you should suffer) διὰ (because of) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness), μακάριοι (you are blessed). “Τὸν (-) δὲ (And) φόβον (the threats) αὐτῶν (of them) μὴ (not) φοβηθῆτε (you should be afraid of), μηδὲ (neither) ταραχθῆτε (should you be troubled).” ¹⁵ Κύριον (As Lord) δὲ (however), τὸν (-) Χριστὸν (Christ) ἁγιάσατε (sanctify) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) καρδίαις (hearts) ὑμῶν (of you), ἕτοιμοι (ready) ἀεὶ (always) πρὸς (for) ἀπολογίαν (a defense) παντὶ (to everyone) τῷ (-) αἰτοῦντι (asking) ὑμᾶς (you) λόγον (an account) περὶ (concerning) τῆς (the) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) ἐλπίδος (hope); ἀλλὰ (yet) μετὰ (with) πραΰτητος (gentleness) καὶ (and) φόβου (fear), ¹⁶ συνείδησιν (a conscience) ἔχοντες (having) ἀγαθήν (good), ἵνα (so that) ἐν (in) ᾧ (this) καταλαλεῖσθε (they might speak against you), καταισχυνθῶσιν (they shall be ashamed) οἱ (those) ἐπηρεάζοντες (reviling) ὑμῶν (your) τὴν (-) ἀγαθὴν (good) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) ἀναστροφήν (manner of life). ¹⁷ κρεῖττον (It is better) γὰρ (for) ἀγαθοποιοῦντας (doing good) εἰ (if) θέλοι (wills it) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), πάσχειν (to suffer), ἢ (than) κακοποιοῦντας (doing evil),

⁴⁷ καὶ (And) ἐὰν (if) ἀσπάσησθε (you greet) τοὺς (the) ἀδελφοὺς (brothers) ὑμῶν (of you) μόνον (only), τί (what) περισσὸν (extraordinary) ποιεῖτε (do you)? οὐχὶ (Do not) καὶ (also) οἱ (the) ἐθνικοὶ (Gentiles) τὸ (the) αὐτὸ (same) ποιοῦσιν (do)?

⁶⁷ Τότε (Then) ἐνέπτυσαν (they spat) εἰς (in) τὸ (the) πρόσωπον (face) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) ἐκολάφισαν (struck) αὐτόν (Him). οἱ (Others) δὲ (then) ἐράπισαν (slapped Him),

¹ Παρακαλῶ (I exhort) οὖν (therefore) ὑμᾶς (you), ἀδελφοί (brothers), διὰ (through) τῶν (the) οἰκτιρμῶν (compassions) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), παραστῆσαι (to present) τὰ (the) σώματα (bodies) ὑμῶν (of you) θυσίαν (a sacrifice) ζῶσαν (living), ἁγίαν (holy), «τῷ (-) Θεῷ» (to God) εὐάρεστον (well-pleasing), τὴν (which is) λογικὴν (the reasonable) λατρείαν (service) ὑμῶν (of you). ² καὶ (And) μὴ (not) συσχηματίζεσθε (be conformed) τῷ (to the) αἰῶνι (age) τούτῳ (this), ἀλλὰ (but) μεταμορφοῦσθε (be transformed) τῇ (by the) ἀνακαινώσει (renewing) τοῦ (of the) νοός (mind), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) δοκιμάζειν (to prove) ὑμᾶς (by you), τί (what is) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), τὸ (-) ἀγαθὸν (good) καὶ (and) εὐάρεστον (well-pleasing) καὶ (and) τέλειον (perfect).

¹¹ ἄχρι (As far as) τῆς (the) ἄρτι (present) ὥρας (hour), καὶ (both) πεινῶμεν (we hunger) καὶ (and) διψῶμεν (thirst), καὶ (and) γυμνιτεύομεν (are poorly clad), καὶ (and) κολαφιζόμεθα (are buffeted), καὶ (and) ἀστατοῦμεν (wander homeless),

¹⁰ δοκιμάζοντες (discerning) τί (what) ἐστιν (is) εὐάρεστον (well-pleasing) τῷ (to the) Κυρίῳ (Lord).

¹⁹ τοῦτο (This) γὰρ (for) χάρις (is acceptable), εἰ (if) διὰ (for sake of) συνείδησιν (conscience) Θεοῦ (toward God), ὑποφέρει (endures) τις (anyone) λύπας (griefs), πάσχων (suffering) ἀδίκως (unjustly).

¹⁴ Ἀλλ’ (But) εἰ (if) καὶ (even) πάσχοιτε (you should suffer) διὰ (because of) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness), μακάριοι (you are blessed). “Τὸν (-) δὲ (And) φόβον (the threats) αὐτῶν (of them) μὴ (not) φοβηθῆτε (you should be afraid of), μηδὲ (neither) ταραχθῆτε (should you be troubled).”

³⁸ καὶ (And) ὃς (he who) οὐ (not) λαμβάνει (takes) τὸν (the) σταυρὸν (cross) αὐτοῦ (of him) καὶ (and) ἀκολουθεῖ (follows) ὀπίσω (after) μου (Me), οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) μου (of Me) ἄξιος (worthy).

²⁹ ἄρατε (Take) τὸν (the) ζυγόν (yoke) μου (of Me) ἐφ’ (upon) ὑμᾶς (you) καὶ (and) μάθετε (learn) ἀπ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (Me), ὅτι (for) πραΰς (gentle) εἰμι (I am) καὶ (and) ταπεινὸς (humble) τῇ (in the) καρδίᾳ (heart), καὶ (and) εὑρήσετε (you will find) ἀνάπαυσιν (rest) ταῖς (for the) ψυχαῖς (souls) ὑμῶν (of you).

²⁴ Τότε (Then) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) τοῖς (to) μαθηταῖς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him), “Εἴ (If) τις (anyone) θέλει (desires) ὀπίσω (after) μου (Me) ἐλθεῖν (to come), ἀπαρνησάσθω (let him deny) ἑαυτὸν (himself), καὶ (and) ἀράτω (take up) τὸν (the) σταυρὸν (cross) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) ἀκολουθείτω (follow) μοι (Me).

³⁴ Καὶ (And) προσκαλεσάμενος (having called to Him) τὸν (the) ὄχλον (crowd) σὺν (with) τοῖς (the) μαθηταῖς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him), εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Εἴ (If) τις (anyone) θέλει (desires) ὀπίσω (after) μου (Me) ἐλθεῖν (to come), ἀπαρνησάσθω (let him deny) ἑαυτὸν (himself), καὶ (and) ἀράτω (let him take up) τὸν (the) σταυρὸν (cross) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) ἀκολουθείτω (let him follow) μοι (Me). ³⁵ ὃς (Whoever) γὰρ (for) ἐὰν (if) θέλῃ (might desire) τὴν (-) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτοῦ (his) σῶσαι (to save), ἀπολέσει (will lose) αὐτήν (it); ὃς (whoever) δ’ (now) ἂν (-) ἀπολέσει (will lose) τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἕνεκεν (on account of) ἐμοῦ (Me) καὶ (and) τοῦ (of the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel), σώσει (he will save) αὐτήν (it).

²³ Ἔλεγεν (He was saying) δὲ (then) πρὸς (to) πάντας (all), “Εἴ (If) τις (anyone) θέλει (desires) ὀπίσω (after) μου (Me) ἔρχεσθαι (to come), ἀρνησάσθω (let him deny) ἑαυτὸν (himself), καὶ (and) ἀράτω (let him take up) τὸν (the) σταυρὸν (cross) αὐτοῦ (of him) καθ’ (every) ἡμέραν (day), καὶ (and) ἀκολουθείτω (let him follow) μοι (Me). ²⁴ ὃς (Whoever) γὰρ (for) ἂν* (-) θέλῃ (might desire) τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτοῦ (of him) σῶσαι (to save), ἀπολέσει (will lose) αὐτήν (it); ὃς (whoever) δ’ (however) ἂν (-) ἀπολέσῃ (might lose) τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἕνεκεν (on account of) ἐμοῦ (me), οὗτος (he) σώσει (will save) αὐτήν (it). ²⁵ Τί (What) γὰρ (for) ὠφελεῖται (is profited) ἄνθρωπος (a man), κερδήσας (having gained) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) ὅλον (whole), ἑαυτὸν (himself) δὲ (now) ἀπολέσας (having destroyed), ἢ (or) ζημιωθείς (having suffered the loss of)?

²⁶ “Εἴ (If) τις (anyone) ἔρχεται (comes) πρός (to) με (Me), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) μισεῖ (hates) τὸν (the) πατέρα (father) ἑαυτοῦ* (of himself) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) γυναῖκα (wife) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) ἀδελφοὺς (brothers) καὶ (and) τὰς (the) ἀδελφάς (sisters), ἔτι (yes), τε (and) καὶ (even) τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) ἑαυτοῦ (of him), οὐ (not) δύναται (he is able) εἶναί (to be) μου (of Me) μαθητής (disciple). ²⁷ ὅστις (Whoever) οὐ (not) βαστάζει (carries) τὸν (the) σταυρὸν (cross) ἑαυτοῦ (of himself) καὶ (and) ἔρχεται (comes) ὀπίσω (after) μου (Me), οὐ (not) δύναται (is able) εἶναί (to be) μου (My) μαθητής (disciple).

²⁶ οὐχὶ (Not) ταῦτα (these things) ἔδει (was it necessary for) παθεῖν (to suffer) τὸν (the) Χριστὸν (Christ) καὶ (and) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him)?”

¹⁵ ὑπόδειγμα (A pattern) γὰρ (for) ἔδωκα (I gave) ὑμῖν (you), ἵνα (that) καθὼς (as) ἐγὼ (I) ἐποίησα (did) ὑμῖν (to you), καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) ποιῆτε (should do).

³³ ταῦτα (These things) λελάληκα (I have spoken) ὑμῖν (to you) ἵνα (so that) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me) εἰρήνην (peace) ἔχητε (you may have). ἐν (In) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world) θλῖψιν (tribulation) ἔχετε (you have). ἀλλὰ (But) θαρσεῖτε (take courage); ἐγὼ (I) νενίκηκα (have overcome) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world).”

¹⁶ ἐγὼ (I) γὰρ (for) ὑποδείξω (will show) αὐτῷ (to him) ὅσα (how much) δεῖ (it behooves) αὐτὸν (him) ὑπὲρ (for) τοῦ (the) ὀνόματός (name) μου (of Me) παθεῖν (to suffer).”

²² ἐπιστηρίζοντες (strengthening) τὰς (the) ψυχὰς (souls) τῶν (of the) μαθητῶν (disciples), παρακαλοῦντες (exhorting them) ἐμμένειν (to continue) τῇ (in the) πίστει (faith), καὶ (and) ὅτι (that) “Διὰ (through) πολλῶν (many) θλίψεων (tribulations) δεῖ (it behooves) ἡμᾶς (us) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).”

³ διανοίγων (opening) καὶ (and) παρατιθέμενος (setting forth) ὅτι (that) τὸν (the) Χριστὸν (Christ) ἔδει (it behooved) παθεῖν (to have suffered), καὶ (and) ἀναστῆναι (to have risen) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead), καὶ (and) ὅτι (that) “Οὗτός (this) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Χριστός (Christ) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), ὃν (whom) ἐγὼ (I) καταγγέλλω (preach) ὑμῖν (to you).”

²⁹ ὅτι (For) οὓς (those whom) προέγνω (He foreknew), καὶ (also) προώρισεν (He predestined to be) συμμόρφους (conformed to) τῆς (the) εἰκόνος (image) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) εἶναι (to be) αὐτὸν (Him) πρωτότοκον (firstborn) ἐν (among) πολλοῖς (many) ἀδελφοῖς (brothers).

¹ Μιμηταί (Imitators) μου (of me) γίνεσθε (be), καθὼς (as) κἀγὼ (I also am) Χριστοῦ (of Christ).

² καὶ (and) περιπατεῖτε (walk) ἐν (in) ἀγάπῃ (love), καθὼς (just as) καὶ (also) ὁ (-) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἠγάπησεν (loved) ἡμᾶς* (us) καὶ (and) παρέδωκεν (gave up) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us) προσφορὰν (as an offering) καὶ (and) θυσίαν (a sacrifice) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), εἰς (into) ὀσμὴν (an aroma) εὐωδίας (of a sweet smell).

⁵ Τοῦτο (This) φρονεῖτε (let mind be) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) ὃ (which) καὶ (also) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus was):

³ τὸ (that) μηδένα (no one) σαίνεσθαι (be moved) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) θλίψεσιν (tribulations) ταύταις (these). αὐτοὶ (Yourselves) γὰρ (for) οἴδατε (you know) ὅτι (that) εἰς (for) τοῦτο (this) κείμεθα (we are destined).

² οἴδατε (You know) γὰρ (for) τίνας (what) παραγγελίας (instructions) ἐδώκαμεν (we gave) ὑμῖν (you), διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).

¹² καὶ (Also) πάντες (all) δὲ (now) οἱ (-) θέλοντες (desiring) ζῆν (to live) εὐσεβῶς (piously) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) διωχθήσονται (will be persecuted).

¹⁰ Ἔπρεπεν (It was fitting) γὰρ (for) αὐτῷ (to Him), δι’ (for) ὃν (whom are) τὰ (-) πάντα (all things) καὶ (and) δι’ (by) οὗ (whom are) τὰ (-) πάντα (all things), πολλοὺς (many) υἱοὺς (sons) εἰς (to) δόξαν (glory) ἀγαγόντα (having brought), τὸν (the) ἀρχηγὸν (archetype) τῆς (of the) σωτηρίας (salvation) αὐτῶν (of them), διὰ (through) παθημάτων (sufferings) τελειῶσαι (to make perfect).

²⁰ προεγνωσμένου (having been foreknown) μὲν (indeed) πρὸ (before) καταβολῆς (the foundation) κόσμου (of the world), φανερωθέντος (having been revealed) δὲ (however) ἐπ’ (in) ἐσχάτου (the last) τῶν (-) χρόνων (times) δι’ (for the sake of) ὑμᾶς (you),

²⁴ ὃς (Who) τὰς (the) ἁμαρτίας (sins) ἡμῶν (of us) αὐτὸς (Himself) ἀνήνεγκεν (bore) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) σώματι (body) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐπὶ (on) τὸ (the) ξύλον (tree), ἵνα (so that), ταῖς (-) ἁμαρτίαις (to sins) ἀπογενόμενοι (having been dead), τῇ (-) δικαιοσύνῃ (to righteousness) ζήσωμεν (we might live). “Οὗ (By whose) τῷ (-) μώλωπι (wounds) ἰάθητε (you have been healed).”

⁹ μὴ (not) ἀποδιδόντες (repaying) κακὸν (evil) ἀντὶ (for) κακοῦ (evil) ἢ (or) λοιδορίαν (insult) ἀντὶ (for) λοιδορίας (insult); τοὐναντίον (on the contrary) δὲ (however), εὐλογοῦντες (blessing), ὅτι (because) εἰς (to) τοῦτο (this) ἐκλήθητε (you were called), ἵνα (so that) εὐλογίαν (blessing) κληρονομήσητε (you should inherit).

¹⁸ ὅτι (because) καὶ (also) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἅπαξ (once) περὶ (for) ἁμαρτιῶν (sins) ἔπαθεν* (suffered), δίκαιος (the righteous) ὑπὲρ (for) ἀδίκων (the unrighteous), ἵνα (so that) ὑμᾶς (you) προσαγάγῃ (He might bring) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), θανατωθεὶς (having been put to death) μὲν (indeed) σαρκὶ (in the flesh), ζωοποιηθεὶς (having been made alive) δὲ (however) πνεύματι (in the spirit),

¹ Χριστοῦ (Christ) οὖν (therefore) παθόντος (having suffered) σαρκὶ (in the flesh), καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) τὴν (the) αὐτὴν (same) ἔννοιαν (mind) ὁπλίσασθε (arm yourselves with), ὅτι (because) ὁ (the one) παθὼν (having suffered) σαρκὶ (in the flesh) πέπαυται (is done with) ἁμαρτίας (sin),

⁶ ὁ (The one) λέγων (claiming) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) μένειν (to abide), ὀφείλει (ought) καθὼς (just as) ἐκεῖνος (that) περιεπάτησεν (walk) καὶ (also) αὐτὸς (He) οὕτως (in the same way) περιπατεῖν (walked).

¹⁶ Ἐν (By) τούτῳ (this) ἐγνώκαμεν (we have known) τὴν (-) ἀγάπην (love), ὅτι (because) ἐκεῖνος (He) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us) τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἔθηκεν (laid down); καὶ (and) ἡμεῖς (we) ὀφείλομεν (ought) ὑπὲρ (for) τῶν (our) ἀδελφῶν (brothers), τὰς (our) ψυχὰς (lives) θεῖναι (to lay down).

¹¹ καὶ (And) αὐτοὶ (they) ἐνίκησαν (have overcome) αὐτὸν (him) διὰ (by reason) τὸ (of the) αἷμα (blood) τοῦ (of the) Ἀρνίου (Lamb), καὶ (and) διὰ (by reason of) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τῆς (of the) μαρτυρίας (testimony) αὐτῶν (of them); καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἠγάπησαν (they have loved) τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτῶν (of them) ἄχρι (unto) θανάτου (death).

⁴ λέγων (saying), “Ἥμαρτον (I sinned), παραδοὺς (having betrayed) αἷμα (blood) ἀθῷον (innocent).” Οἱ (-) δὲ (Then) εἶπαν (they said), “Τί (What is that) πρὸς (to) ἡμᾶς (us)? σὺ (You) ὄψῃ (will see).”

¹⁹ Καθημένου (As was sitting) δὲ (now) αὐτοῦ (he) ἐπὶ (on) τοῦ (the) βήματος (judgment seat), ἀπέστειλεν (sent) πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν (him) ἡ (the) γυνὴ (wife) αὐτοῦ (of him), λέγουσα (saying), “Μηδὲν (Let there be nothing) σοὶ (between you) καὶ (and) τῷ (the) δικαίῳ (righteous man) ἐκείνῳ (that); πολλὰ (many things) γὰρ (for) ἔπαθον (I suffered) σήμερον (today) κατ’ (in) ὄναρ (a dream) δι’ (because of) αὐτόν (Him).”

²³ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἔφη (he said), “Τί (What) γὰρ (for) κακὸν (evil) ἐποίησεν (did He commit)?” Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) περισσῶς (all the more) ἔκραζον (they kept crying out), λέγοντες (saying), “Σταυρωθήτω (Let Him be crucified).” ²⁴ Ἰδὼν (Having seen) δὲ (now) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) ὅτι (that) οὐδὲν (nothing) ὠφελεῖ (it availed), ἀλλὰ (but) μᾶλλον (rather) θόρυβος (a riot) γίνεται (is arising), λαβὼν (having taken) ὕδωρ (water), ἀπενίψατο (he washed) τὰς (the) χεῖρας (hands) ἀπέναντι* (before) τοῦ (the) ὄχλου (crowd), λέγων (saying), “Ἀθῷός (Guiltless) εἰμι (I am) ἀπὸ (of) τοῦ (the) αἵματος (blood) τούτου (of this). ὑμεῖς (For yourselves) ὄψεσθε (you will see).”

⁴¹ καὶ (and) ἡμεῖς (we) μὲν (indeed) δικαίως (justly)? ἄξια (Worthy) γὰρ (for) ὧν (of what) ἐπράξαμεν (we did) ἀπολαμβάνομεν (we are receiving); οὗτος (this man) δὲ (however) οὐδὲν (nothing) ἄτοπον (wrong) ἔπραξεν (did).”

⁴⁷ Ἰδὼν (Having seen) δὲ (now) ὁ (the) ἑκατοντάρχης (centurion) τὸ (that) γενόμενον (having taken place), ἐδόξαζεν (he began glorifying) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God), λέγων (saying), “Ὄντως (Certainly) ὁ (the) ἄνθρωπος (man) οὗτος (this) δίκαιος (righteous) ἦν (was).”

⁴⁶ Τίς (Which) ἐξ (of) ὑμῶν (you) ἐλέγχει (convicts) με (me) περὶ (concerning) ἁμαρτίας (sin)? εἰ (If) ἀλήθειαν (the truth) λέγω (I speak), διὰ (because of) τί (why) ὑμεῖς (you) οὐ (not) πιστεύετέ (do believe) μοι (Me)?

²¹ τὸν (The One) μὴ (not) γνόντα (having known) ἁμαρτίαν (sin), ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us) ἁμαρτίαν (sin) ἐποίησεν (He made), ἵνα (so that) ἡμεῖς (we) γενώμεθα (might become) δικαιοσύνη (the righteousness) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him).

¹⁵ οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ἔχομεν (have we) ἀρχιερέα (a high priest) μὴ (not) δυνάμενον (being able) συμπαθῆσαι (to sympathize) ταῖς (with the) ἀσθενείαις (weaknesses) ἡμῶν (of us); πεπειρασμένον (one having been tempted) δὲ (however) κατὰ (in) πάντα (all things) καθ’ (by) ὁμοιότητα (the same way), χωρὶς (without) ἁμαρτίας (sin).

²⁶ Τοιοῦτος (Such) γὰρ (indeed) ἡμῖν (for us) καὶ (also) ἔπρεπεν (was fitting) ἀρχιερεύς (a high priest), ὅσιος (holy), ἄκακος (innocent), ἀμίαντος (undefiled), κεχωρισμένος (having been separated) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (-) ἁμαρτωλῶν (sinners), καὶ (and) ὑψηλότερος (higher) τῶν (than the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) γενόμενος (having become), ²⁷ ὃς (who) οὐκ (not) ἔχει (has) καθ’ (every) ἡμέραν (day) ἀνάγκην (need), ὥσπερ (as) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (high priests), πρότερον (first) ὑπὲρ (for) τῶν (the) ἰδίων (own) ἁμαρτιῶν (sins), θυσίας (sacrifices) ἀναφέρειν (to offer up), ἔπειτα (then) τῶν (for those) τοῦ (of the) λαοῦ (people); τοῦτο (this) γὰρ (for) ἐποίησεν (He did) ἐφάπαξ (once for all), ἑαυτὸν (Himself) ἀνενέγκας (having offered up).

²⁸ οὕτως (so) καὶ (also) ὁ (-) Χριστός (Christ), ἅπαξ (once) προσενεχθεὶς (having been offered) εἰς (in order) τὸ (-) πολλῶν (of many) ἀνενεγκεῖν (to bear) ἁμαρτίας (the sins), ἐκ (for) δευτέρου (a second time), χωρὶς (apart from) ἁμαρτίας (sin), ὀφθήσεται (will appear) τοῖς (to those) αὐτὸν (Him) ἀπεκδεχομένοις (awaiting) εἰς (for) σωτηρίαν (salvation).

¹ Τεκνία (Little children) μου (of me), ταῦτα (these things) γράφω (I am writing) ὑμῖν (to you) ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) ἁμάρτητε (you might sin). καὶ (And) ἐάν (if) τις (anyone) ἁμάρτῃ (should sin), Παράκλητον (an advocate) ἔχομεν (we have) πρὸς (with) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father), Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) Χριστὸν (Christ) δίκαιον (the Righteous One).

⁵ καὶ (And) οἴδατε (you know) ὅτι (that) ἐκεῖνος (He) ἐφανερώθη (appeared) ἵνα (so that) τὰς (-) ἁμαρτίας (sins) ἄρῃ (He might take away); καὶ (and) ἁμαρτία (sin) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (there is).

³⁹ Οἱ (Those) δὲ (now) παραπορευόμενοι (passing by) ἐβλασφήμουν (kept railing at) αὐτὸν (Him), κινοῦντες (wagging) τὰς (the) κεφαλὰς (heads) αὐτῶν (of them) ⁴⁰ καὶ (and) λέγοντες (saying), “Ὁ (The One) καταλύων (destroying) τὸν (the) ναὸν (temple) καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τρισὶν (three) ἡμέραις (days) οἰκοδομῶν (building it), σῶσον (save) σεαυτόν (Yourself)! εἰ (If) Υἱὸς (the Son) εἶ (You are) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), καὶ (also) κατάβηθι (descend) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) σταυροῦ (cross)!” ⁴¹ Ὁμοίως (Likewise) ‹καὶ› (also) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests), ἐμπαίζοντες (mocking), μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) γραμματέων (scribes) καὶ (and) πρεσβυτέρων (elders), ἔλεγον (were saying), ⁴² “Ἄλλους (Others) ἔσωσεν (He saved). ἑαυτὸν (Himself) οὐ (not) δύναται (is He able) σῶσαι (to save). Βασιλεὺς (King) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel) ἐστιν (He is). καταβάτω (Let Him descend) νῦν (now) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) σταυροῦ (cross), καὶ (and) πιστεύσομεν (we will believe) ἐπ’ (in) αὐτόν (Him). ⁴³ πέποιθεν (He trusted) ἐπὶ (on) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God). ῥυσάσθω (Let Him deliver) νῦν (now) εἰ (if) θέλει (He wants) αὐτόν (Him). εἶπεν (He said) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (-), ‘Θεοῦ (Of God) εἰμι (I am) Υἱός (the Son).’” ⁴⁴ Τὸ (-) δ’ (And) αὐτὸ (likewise) καὶ (even) οἱ (the) λῃσταὶ (robbers), οἱ (those) συσταυρωθέντες (having been crucified) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him), ὠνείδιζον (were upbraiding) αὐτόν (Him).

⁶⁰ Καὶ (And) ἀναστὰς (having stood up) ὁ (the) ἀρχιερεὺς (high priest) εἰς (in) μέσον (the midst), ἐπηρώτησεν (he questioned) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), λέγων (saying), “Οὐκ (Not) ἀποκρίνῃ (answer You) οὐδέν (nothing)? τί (What is it) οὗτοί (these) σου (You) καταμαρτυροῦσιν (testify against)?” ⁶¹ Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) ἐσιώπα (He was silent), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἀπεκρίνατο (did He answer) οὐδέν (nothing). Πάλιν (Again) ὁ (the) ἀρχιερεὺς (high priest) ἐπηρώτα (was questioning) αὐτὸν (Him), καὶ (and) λέγει (says) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Χριστὸς (Christ), ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (of the) Εὐλογητοῦ (Blessed One)?”

²⁹ Καὶ (And) οἱ (those) παραπορευόμενοι (passing by) ἐβλασφήμουν (were railing at) αὐτὸν (Him), κινοῦντες (shaking) τὰς (the) κεφαλὰς (heads) αὐτῶν (of them) καὶ (and) λέγοντες (saying), “Οὐὰ (Aha)! ὁ (The One) καταλύων (destroying) τὸν (the) ναὸν (temple) καὶ (and) οἰκοδομῶν (building it) ἐν (in) τρισὶν (three) ἡμέραις (days), ³⁰ σῶσον (save) σεαυτὸν (Yourself), καταβὰς (having descended) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) σταυροῦ (cross)!” ³¹ Ὁμοίως (Likewise) καὶ (also) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests), ἐμπαίζοντες (mocking) πρὸς (among) ἀλλήλους (one another), μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) γραμματέων (scribes), ἔλεγον (were saying), “Ἄλλους (Others) ἔσωσεν (He saved); ἑαυτὸν (Himself) οὐ (not) δύναται (He is able) σῶσαι (to save). ³² ὁ (The) Χριστὸς (Christ), ὁ (the) Βασιλεὺς (King) Ἰσραὴλ (of Israel), καταβάτω (let Him descend) νῦν (now) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) σταυροῦ (cross), ἵνα (that) ἴδωμεν (we might see) καὶ (and) πιστεύσωμεν (believe)!” καὶ (And) οἱ (those) συνεσταυρωμένοι (being crucified) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him) ὠνείδιζον (were upbraiding) αὐτόν (Him).

⁶⁴ καὶ (And) περικαλύψαντες (having blindfolded) αὐτὸν (Him), ἐπηρώτων (they were questioning Him), λέγοντες (saying), “Προφήτευσον (Prophesy), τίς (who) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the one) παίσας (having struck) σε (You)?” ⁶⁵ καὶ (And) ἕτερα (other things) πολλὰ (many), βλασφημοῦντες (blaspheming), ἔλεγον (they were saying) εἰς (to) αὐτόν (Him).

⁹ ἐπηρώτα (He kept questioning) δὲ (then) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐν (in) λόγοις (words) ἱκανοῖς (many); αὐτὸς (He) δὲ (however) οὐδὲν (nothing) ἀπεκρίνατο (answered) αὐτῷ (him).

³⁴ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἔλεγεν (was saying), “Πάτερ (Father), ἄφες (forgive) αὐτοῖς (them), οὐ (not) γὰρ (for) οἴδασιν (they know) τί (what) ποιοῦσιν (they do).” διαμεριζόμενοι (Dividing) δὲ (then) τὰ (the) ἱμάτια (garments) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἔβαλον (they cast) κλήρους (lots). ³⁵ Καὶ (And) εἱστήκει (stood) ὁ (the) λαὸς (people) θεωρῶν (beholding). ἐξεμυκτήριζον (Were deriding Him) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) οἱ (the) ἄρχοντες (rulers), λέγοντες (saying), “Ἄλλους (Others) ἔσωσεν (He saved); σωσάτω (let Him save) ἑαυτόν (Himself) εἰ (if) οὗτός (this) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Χριστὸς (Christ) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ὁ (the) ἐκλεκτός (Chosen One).” ³⁶ Ἐνέπαιξαν (Mocked) δὲ (then) αὐτῷ (Him) καὶ (also) οἱ (the) στρατιῶται (soldiers), προσερχόμενοι (coming near), ὄξος (sour wine) προσφέροντες (offering) αὐτῷ (Him), ³⁷ καὶ (and) λέγοντες (saying), “Εἰ (If) σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Βασιλεὺς (King) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews), σῶσον (save) σεαυτόν (Yourself)!” ³⁸ Ἦν (There was) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) ἐπιγραφὴ (an inscription) ἐπ’ (over) αὐτῷ (Him), Ο* (The) ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ (King) ΤΩΝ (of the) ΙΟΥΔΑΙΩΝ (Jews) ΟΥΤΟΣ* (This). ³⁹ Εἷς (One) δὲ (now) τῶν (of the) κρεμασθέντων (having been hanged) κακούργων (criminals) ἐβλασφήμει (was railing at) αὐτόν (Him), ‹λέγων› (saying) “Οὐχὶ (Not) σὺ (you are) εἶ (if) ὁ (the) Χριστός (Christ)? σῶσον (Save) σεαυτὸν (Yourself) καὶ (and) ἡμᾶς (us)!”

⁴⁶ Καὶ (And) φωνήσας (having called out) φωνῇ (in a voice) μεγάλῃ (loud), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said), “Πάτερ (Father), εἰς (into) χεῖράς (the hands) σου (of You) παρατίθεμαι (I commit) τὸ (the) πνεῦμά (Spirit) μου (of Me).” τοῦτο (This) δὲ (now) εἰπὼν (having said), ἐξέπνευσεν (He breathed His last).

⁴⁸ Ἀπεκρίθησαν (Answered) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) καὶ (and) εἶπαν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Οὐ (Not) καλῶς (rightly) λέγομεν (say) ἡμεῖς (we) ὅτι (that) Σαμαρίτης (a Samaritan) εἶ (are) σὺ (You), καὶ (and) δαιμόνιον (a demon) ἔχεις (have)?” ⁴⁹ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἐγὼ (I) δαιμόνιον (a demon) οὐκ (not) ἔχω (have); ἀλλὰ (but) τιμῶ (I honor) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father) μου (of Me), καὶ (and) ὑμεῖς (you) ἀτιμάζετέ (dishonor) με (Me).

⁹ καὶ (And) εἰσῆλθεν (he went) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πραιτώριον (Praetorium) πάλιν (again), καὶ (and) λέγει (he says) τῷ (-) Ἰησοῦ (to Jesus), “Πόθεν (From where) εἶ (are) σύ (You)?” Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἀπόκρισιν (an answer) οὐκ (not) ἔδωκεν (did give) αὐτῷ (him). ¹⁰ Λέγει (Says) οὖν (therefore) αὐτῷ (to Him) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), “Ἐμοὶ (To me) οὐ (not) λαλεῖς (speak You)? οὐκ (Not) οἶδας (know You) ὅτι (that) ἐξουσίαν (authority) ἔχω (I have) ἀπολῦσαί (to release) σε (You), καὶ (and) ἐξουσίαν (authority) ἔχω (I have) σταυρῶσαί (to crucify) σε (You)?” ¹¹ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) ‹αὐτῷ› (him) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Οὐκ (Not) εἶχες (you would have) ἐξουσίαν (authority) κατ’ (also) ἐμοῦ (Me) οὐδεμίαν (against), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ἦν (it were) δεδομένον (given) σοι (to you) ἄνωθεν (from above). διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), ὁ (the one) παραδούς (having delivered up) μέ (Me) σοι (to you), μείζονα (greater) ἁμαρτίαν (sin) ἔχει (has).”

²⁹ καὶ (And) τὰ (-) νῦν (now), Κύριε (Lord), ἔπιδε (look) ἐπὶ (upon) τὰς (the) ἀπειλὰς (threats) αὐτῶν (of them), καὶ (and) δὸς (grant) τοῖς (to the) δούλοις (servants) σου (of You) μετὰ (with) παρρησίας (boldness) πάσης (all) λαλεῖν (to speak) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) σου (of You),

⁵⁹ Καὶ (And as) ἐλιθοβόλουν (they were stoning) τὸν (-) Στέφανον (Stephen), ἐπικαλούμενον (he was calling out) καὶ (and) λέγοντα (saying), “Κύριε (Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), δέξαι (receive) τὸ (the) πνεῦμά (spirit) μου (of me).”

³² Ἡ (-) δὲ (Now) περιοχὴ (the passage) τῆς (of the) γραφῆς (Scripture) ἣν (which) ἀνεγίνωσκεν (he was reading) ἦν (was) αὕτη (this): “Ὡς (As) πρόβατον (a sheep) ἐπὶ (to) σφαγὴν (slaughter) ἤχθη (He was led), καὶ (and) ὡς (as) ἀμνὸς (a lamb) ἐναντίον (before) τοῦ (the one) κείραντος* (shearing) αὐτὸν (him) ἄφωνος (is silent), οὕτως (so) οὐκ (not) ἀνοίγει (He opens) τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ³³ Ἐν (In) τῇ (the) ταπεινώσει (humiliation) [αὐτοῦ] (of Him), ἡ (-) κρίσις (justice) αὐτοῦ (from Him) ἤρθη (was taken away). τὴν (The) γενεὰν (generation) αὐτοῦ (of Him), τίς (who) διηγήσεται (will describe)? ὅτι (For) αἴρεται (is removed) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth) ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) αὐτοῦ (of Him).” ³⁴ Ἀποκριθεὶς (Answering) δὲ (now), ὁ (the) εὐνοῦχος (eunuch) τῷ (-) Φιλίππῳ (to Philip) εἶπεν (said), “Δέομαί (I pray) σου (you), περὶ (concerning) τίνος (whom) ὁ (the) προφήτης (prophet) λέγει (says) τοῦτο (this)? περὶ (Concerning) ἑαυτοῦ (himself), ἢ (or) περὶ (concerning) ἑτέρου (other) τινός (some)?” ³⁵ Ἀνοίξας (Having opened) δὲ (then) ὁ (-) Φίλιππος (Philip) τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth) αὐτοῦ (of him) καὶ (and) ἀρξάμενος (having begun) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) γραφῆς (Scripture) ταύτης (this), εὐηγγελίσατο (he proclaimed the good news) αὐτῷ (to him) — τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus).

¹ Ὁ (-) Δὲ (But) Σαῦλος (Saul), ἔτι (still) ἐμπνέων (breathing out) ἀπειλῆς (threats) καὶ (and) φόνου (murder) εἰς (toward) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord), προσελθὼν (having gone) τῷ (to the) ἀρχιερεῖ (high priest),

³¹ καθότι (because) ἔστησεν (He set) ἡμέραν (a day) ἐν (in) ᾗ (which) μέλλει (He is about) κρίνειν (to judge) τὴν (the) οἰκουμένην (world) ἐν (in) δικαιοσύνῃ (righteousness), ἐν (by) ἀνδρὶ (a man) ᾧ (whom) ὥρισεν (He appointed), πίστιν (a guarantee) παρασχὼν (having provided) πᾶσιν (to all), ἀναστήσας (having raised) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead).”

⁵ Κατὰ (Because of) δὲ (however) τὴν (the) σκληρότητά (hardness) σου (of you) καὶ (and) ἀμετανόητον (unrepentant) καρδίαν (heart), θησαυρίζεις (you are treasuring up) σεαυτῷ (to yourself) ὀργὴν (wrath) ἐν (in) ἡμέρᾳ (the day) ὀργῆς (of wrath) καὶ (and) ἀποκαλύψεως (revelation) δικαιοκρισίας (of righteous judgement) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God),

⁹ Καὶ (And) οἱ (-) κύριοι (masters), τὰ (the same things) αὐτὰ (them) ποιεῖτε (do) πρὸς (toward) αὐτούς (them), ἀνιέντες (giving up) τὴν (the) ἀπειλήν (threatening), εἰδότες (knowing) ὅτι (that) καὶ (also) αὐτῶν (of them) καὶ (and) ὑμῶν (of you) ὁ (the) Κύριός (master) ἐστιν (is) ἐν (in) οὐρανοῖς (the heavens), καὶ (and) προσωπολημψία (partiality) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (there is) παρ’ (with) αὐτῷ (Him).

⁵ Ἔνδειγμα (This is a plain token) τῆς (of the) δικαίας (righteous) κρίσεως (judgment) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), εἰς (unto) τὸ (-) καταξιωθῆναι (to be accounted worthy) ὑμᾶς (you) τῆς (of the) βασιλείας (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ὑπὲρ (for) ἧς (which) καὶ (also) πάσχετε (you suffer).

⁸ λοιπὸν (From now on) ἀπόκειταί (is laid up) μοι (for me) ὁ (the) τῆς (-) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness) στέφανος (crown), ὃν (which) ἀποδώσει (will award) μοι (to me) ὁ (the) κύριος (Lord) ἐν (in) ἐκείνῃ (that) τῇ (-) ἡμέρᾳ (day), ὁ (the) δίκαιος (righteous) κριτής (judge); οὐ (not) μόνον (only) δὲ (however) ἐμοὶ (to me), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) πᾶσι (to all) τοῖς (those) ἠγαπηκόσι (loving) τὴν (the) ἐπιφάνειαν (appearing) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

³ ἀναλογίσασθε (Consider fully) γὰρ (for), τὸν (the One) τοιαύτην (such great) ὑπομεμενηκότα (having endured) ὑπὸ (from) τῶν (-) ἁμαρτωλῶν (sinners) εἰς (against) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) ἀντιλογίαν (hostility), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) κάμητε (you shall grow weary), ταῖς (in the) ψυχαῖς (souls) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐκλυόμενοι (fainting).

¹⁹ Ὥστε (Therefore) καὶ (also), οἱ (those) πάσχοντες (suffering) κατὰ (according to) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), πιστῷ (to the faithful) Κτίστῃ (Creator) παρατιθέσθωσαν (let them commit) τὰς (the) ψυχὰς (souls) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐν (in) ἀγαθοποιΐᾳ (well doing).

¹¹ Καὶ (And) εἶδον (I saw) τὸν (-) οὐρανὸν (heaven) ἠνεῳγμένον (having been opened), καὶ (and) ἰδοὺ (behold), ἵππος (a horse) λευκός (white), καὶ (and) ὁ (the One) καθήμενος (sitting) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτὸν (it), καλούμενος (called) Πιστὸς (Faithful) καὶ (and) Ἀληθινός (True), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) δικαιοσύνῃ (righteousness) κρίνει (He judges) καὶ (and) πολεμεῖ (makes war).

²⁰ λέγω (I say) γὰρ (for) ὑμῖν (to you), ὅτι (that) ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) περισσεύσῃ (shall abound) ὑμῶν (your) ἡ (-) δικαιοσύνη (righteousness) πλεῖον (above that) τῶν (of the) γραμματέων (scribes) καὶ (and) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees), οὐ (no) μὴ (not) εἰσέλθητε (shall you enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens).

¹⁷ ὅπως (so that) πληρωθῇ (it might be fulfilled) τὸ (that) ῥηθὲν (having been spoken) διὰ (by) Ἠσαΐου (Isaiah) τοῦ (the) προφήτου (prophet), λέγοντος (saying), “Αὐτὸς (Himself) τὰς (the) ἀσθενείας (infirmities) ἡμῶν (of us) ἔλαβεν (He took), καὶ (and) τὰς (our) νόσους (diseases) ἐβάστασεν (bore).”

²⁶ Τότε (Then) ἀπέλυσεν (he released) αὐτοῖς (to them) τὸν (-) Βαραββᾶν (Barabbas); τὸν (-) δὲ (and) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) φραγελλώσας (having flogged), παρέδωκεν (He delivered up Him), ἵνα (that) σταυρωθῇ (He might be crucified).

¹⁵ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), βουλόμενος (desiring) τῷ (to the) ὄχλῳ (crowd) τὸ (that which was) ἱκανὸν (satisfactory) ποιῆσαι (to do), ἀπέλυσεν (released) αὐτοῖς (to them) τὸν (-) Βαραββᾶν (Barabbas), καὶ (and) παρέδωκεν (he delivered) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), φραγελλώσας (having flogged him), ἵνα (that) σταυρωθῇ (He might be crucified).

⁷⁴ ἀφόβως (without fear), ἐκ (from) χειρὸς (the hand) ἐχθρῶν (of our enemies) ῥυσθέντας (having been saved), λατρεύειν (to serve) αὐτῷ (Him), ⁷⁵ ἐν (in) ὁσιότητι (holiness) καὶ (and) δικαιοσύνῃ (righteousness) ἐνώπιον (before) αὐτοῦ (Him), πάσαις (all) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) ἡμῶν (of our life).

¹⁸ “Πνεῦμα (The Spirit) Κυρίου (of the Lord is) ἐπ’ (upon) ἐμέ (Me), Οὗ (of which) εἵνεκεν (because) ἔχρισέν (He has anointed) με (Me) Εὐαγγελίσασθαι (to preach good news) πτωχοῖς (to the poor). Ἀπέσταλκέν (He has sent) με (Me) κηρῦξαι (to proclaim) αἰχμαλώτοις (to the captives) ἄφεσιν (deliverance), Καὶ (and) τυφλοῖς (to the blind) ἀνάβλεψιν (recovery of sight), Ἀποστεῖλαι (to send forth) τεθραυσμένους (the oppressed) ἐν (in) ἀφέσει (deliverance),

²⁹ Τῇ (On the) ἐπαύριον (next day) βλέπει (he sees) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ἐρχόμενον (coming) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (him) καὶ (and) λέγει (says), “Ἴδε (Behold) ὁ (the) Ἀμνὸς (Lamb) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ὁ (-) αἴρων (taking away) τὴν (the) ἁμαρτίαν (sin) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world).

¹ Τότε (At that time) οὖν (therefore) ἔλαβεν (took) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) καὶ (and) ἐμαστίγωσεν (flogged Him).

³⁰ ὁ (The) Θεὸς (God) τῶν (of the) πατέρων (fathers) ἡμῶν (of us) ἤγειρεν (raised up) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), ὃν (whom) ὑμεῖς (you) διεχειρίσασθε (killed), κρεμάσαντες (having hanged Him) ἐπὶ (on) ξύλου (a tree).

³⁵ ἀλλ’ (but) ἐν (in) παντὶ (every) ἔθνει (nation), ὁ (the one) φοβούμενος (fearing) αὐτὸν (Him) καὶ (and) ἐργαζόμενος (working) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness), δεκτὸς (acceptable) αὐτῷ (to Him) ἐστιν (is),

³⁹ Καὶ (And) ἡμεῖς (we) μάρτυρες (are witnesses) πάντων (of all things) ὧν (that) ἐποίησεν (He did) ἔν (in) τε (both) τῇ (the) χώρᾳ (region) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews) καὶ (and) [ἐν] (in) Ἰερουσαλήμ (Jerusalem), ὃν (whom) καὶ (also) ἀνεῖλαν (they put to death), κρεμάσαντες (having hanged Him) ἐπὶ (on) ξύλου (a tree).

²⁹ Ὡς (When) δὲ (then) ἐτέλεσαν (they had finished) πάντα (all) τὰ (the things) περὶ (about) αὐτοῦ (Him) γεγραμμένα (having been written), καθελόντες (having taken Him down) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) ξύλου (tree), ἔθηκαν (they put Him) εἰς (in) μνημεῖον (a tomb).

² μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)! οἵτινες (Who) ἀπεθάνομεν (we died) τῇ (-) ἁμαρτίᾳ (to sin), πῶς (how) ἔτι (still) ζήσομεν (shall we live) ἐν (in) αὐτῇ (it)?

⁷ ὁ (The one) γὰρ (for) ἀποθανὼν (having died) δεδικαίωται (has been freed) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (-) ἁμαρτίας (sin).

¹¹ οὕτως (So) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you), λογίζεσθε (consider) ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves) εἶναι (to be) νεκροὺς (dead) μὲν (indeed) τῇ (-) ἁμαρτίᾳ (to sin), ζῶντας (living) δὲ (however) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).

¹³ μηδὲ (Neither) παριστάνετε (yield) τὰ (the) μέλη (members) ὑμῶν (of you) ὅπλα (as instruments) ἀδικίας (of unrighteousness) τῇ (-) ἁμαρτίᾳ (to sin), ἀλλὰ (but) παραστήσατε (yield) ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), ὡσεὶ (as) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead) ζῶντας (living), καὶ (and) τὰ (the) μέλη (members) ὑμῶν (of you), ὅπλα (as instruments) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God).

¹⁶ οὐκ (Not) οἴδατε (know you) ὅτι (that) ᾧ (to whom) παριστάνετε (you yield) ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves) δούλους (as slaves) εἰς (for) ὑπακοήν (obedience), δοῦλοί (slaves) ἐστε (you are) ᾧ (to him whom) ὑπακούετε (you obey), ἤτοι (whether) ἁμαρτίας (of sin) εἰς (to) θάνατον (death), ἢ (or) ὑπακοῆς (of obedience) εἰς (to) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness)?

⁶ νυνὶ (Now) δὲ (however) κατηργήθημεν (we have been released) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law), ἀποθανόντες (having died) ἐν (to) ᾧ (that which) κατειχόμεθα (we were bound), ὥστε (in order for) δουλεύειν (to serve) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐν (in) καινότητι (newness) πνεύματος (of the Spirit), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) παλαιότητι (in oldness) γράμματος (of the letter).

¹⁷ “Διὸ (Therefore) ἐξέλθατε (come out) ἐκ (from) μέσου (the midst) αὐτῶν (of them) καὶ (and) ἀφορίσθητε (be separate), λέγει (says) Κύριος (the Lord), καὶ (and) ἀκαθάρτου (unclean) μὴ (nothing) ἅπτεσθε (touch), κἀγὼ (and I) εἰσδέξομαι (will receive) ὑμᾶς (you).”

¹³ Χριστὸς (Christ) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐξηγόρασεν (redeemed) ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) κατάρας (curse) τοῦ (of the) νόμου (Law), γενόμενος (having become) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us) κατάρα (a curse), ὅτι (for) γέγραπται (it has been written): “Ἐπικατάρατος (Cursed is) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) κρεμάμενος (hanging) ἐπὶ (on) ξύλου (a tree)” —

⁹ ὁ (-) γὰρ (for) καρπὸς (the fruit) τοῦ (of the) φωτὸς (light is) ἐν (in) πάσῃ (all) ἀγαθωσύνῃ (goodness) καὶ (and) δικαιοσύνῃ (righteousness) καὶ (and) ἀληθείᾳ (truth)—

²⁰ Εἰ (If) ἀπεθάνετε (you have died) σὺν (with) Χριστῷ (Christ) ἀπὸ (away from) τῶν (the) στοιχείων (principles) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world), τί (why) ὡς (as if) ζῶντες (living) ἐν (in) κόσμῳ (the world), δογματίζεσθε (do you submit to decrees):

³ ἀπεθάνετε (You have died) γάρ (for), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) ὑμῶν (of you) κέκρυπται (has been hidden) σὺν (with) τῷ (-) Χριστῷ (Christ) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God).

²⁶ Τοιοῦτος (Such) γὰρ (indeed) ἡμῖν (for us) καὶ (also) ἔπρεπεν (was fitting) ἀρχιερεύς (a high priest), ὅσιος (holy), ἄκακος (innocent), ἀμίαντος (undefiled), κεχωρισμένος (having been separated) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (-) ἁμαρτωλῶν (sinners), καὶ (and) ὑψηλότερος (higher) τῶν (than the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) γενόμενος (having become),

¹³ καὶ (and) τροχιὰς (paths) ὀρθὰς (straight) ποιεῖτε (make) τοῖς (for the) ποσὶν (feet) ὑμῶν (of you), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) τὸ (the) χωλὸν (lame) ἐκτραπῇ (should be put out of joint), ἰαθῇ (should be healed) δὲ (however) μᾶλλον (rather).

¹⁶ Ἐξομολογεῖσθε (Confess) οὖν (therefore) ἀλλήλοις (to one another) τὰς (the) ἁμαρτίας (sins), καὶ (and) εὔχεσθε* (pray) ὑπὲρ (for) ἀλλήλων (one another), ὅπως (so that) ἰαθῆτε (you may be healed). πολὺ (Much) ἰσχύει (prevails) δέησις (the prayer) δικαίου (of a righteous man) ἐνεργουμένη (being made effective).

¹ Χριστοῦ (Christ) οὖν (therefore) παθόντος (having suffered) σαρκὶ (in the flesh), καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) τὴν (the) αὐτὴν (same) ἔννοιαν (mind) ὁπλίσασθε (arm yourselves with), ὅτι (because) ὁ (the one) παθὼν (having suffered) σαρκὶ (in the flesh) πέπαυται (is done with) ἁμαρτίας (sin), ² εἰς (so as) τὸ (-) μηκέτι (no longer) ἀνθρώπων (to men’s) ἐπιθυμίαις (desires) ἀλλὰ (but) θελήματι (to the will) Θεοῦ (of God), τὸν (the) ἐπίλοιπον (remaining) ἐν (in) σαρκὶ (the flesh) βιῶσαι (to live) χρόνον (time).

²⁹ Ἐὰν (If) εἰδῆτε (you know) ὅτι (that) δίκαιός (righteous) ἐστιν (He is), γινώσκετε (you know) ὅτι (that) καὶ (also) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ποιῶν (practicing) τὴν (-) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness), ἐξ (of) αὐτοῦ (Him) γεγέννηται (has been begotten).

⁷ Τεκνία (Little children), μηδεὶς (no one) πλανάτω (let lead astray) ὑμᾶς (you); ὁ (the one) ποιῶν (practicing) τὴν (-) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness), δίκαιός (righteous) ἐστιν (is), καθὼς (just as) ἐκεῖνος (He) δίκαιός (righteous) ἐστιν (is).

² ἐν (In) μέσῳ (the middle) τῆς (of the) πλατείας (street) αὐτῆς (of it) καὶ (and) τοῦ (of the) ποταμοῦ (river), ἐντεῦθεν (on this side) καὶ (and) ἐκεῖθεν (on that side), ξύλον (was a tree) ζωῆς (of life), ποιοῦν (producing) καρποὺς (fruits) δώδεκα (twelve), κατὰ (according to) μῆνα (month), ἕκαστον (each) ἀποδιδοῦν (yielding) τὸν (the) καρπὸν (fruit) αὐτοῦ (of it); καὶ (and) τὰ (the) φύλλα (leaves) τοῦ (of the) ξύλου (tree) εἰς (are for) θεραπείαν (the healing) τῶν (of the) ἐθνῶν (nations).

³⁶ Ἰδὼν (Having seen) δὲ (now) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds), ἐσπλαγχνίσθη (He was moved with compassion) περὶ (for) αὐτῶν (them), ὅτι (because) ἦσαν (they were) ἐσκυλμένοι (wearied) καὶ (and) ἐρριμμένοι (cast away), ὡσεὶ (as) πρόβατα (sheep) μὴ (not) ἔχοντα (having) ποιμένα (a shepherd).

¹² Τί (What) ὑμῖν (you) δοκεῖ (do think)? ἐὰν (If) γένηταί (there should be) τινι (to any) ἀνθρώπῳ (man) ἑκατὸν (a hundred) πρόβατα (sheep), καὶ (and) πλανηθῇ (has gone astray) ἓν (one) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them), οὐχὶ (not) ἀφήσει (will he leave) τὰ (the) ἐνενήκοντα (ninety) ἐννέα (nine) ἐπὶ (on) τὰ (the) ὄρη (mountains), καὶ (and) πορευθεὶς (having gone), ζητεῖ (seek) τὸ (the one) πλανώμενον (going astray)?

⁴ “Τίς (What) ἄνθρωπος (man) ἐξ (of) ὑμῶν (you), ἔχων (having) ἑκατὸν (a hundred) πρόβατα (sheep), καὶ (and) ἀπολέσας (having lost) ἐξ (of) αὐτῶν (them) ἓν (one), οὐ (not) καταλείπει (leaves) τὰ (the) ἐνενήκοντα (ninety) ἐννέα (nine) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐρήμῳ (open field), καὶ (and) πορεύεται (goes) ἐπὶ (after) τὸ (the one) ἀπολωλὸς (having been lost), ἕως (until) εὕρῃ (he finds) αὐτό (it)? ⁵ καὶ (And) εὑρὼν (having found it), ἐπιτίθησιν (he lays it) ἐπὶ (on) τοὺς (the) ὤμους (shoulders) αὐτοῦ (of him), χαίρων (rejoicing). ⁶ καὶ (And) ἐλθὼν (having come) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) οἶκον (house), συνκαλεῖ (he calls together) τοὺς (the) φίλους (friends) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) γείτονας (neighbors), λέγων (saying) αὐτοῖς (to them), ‘Συνχάρητέ (Rejoice with) μοι (me), ὅτι (for) εὗρον (I have found) τὸ (the) πρόβατόν (sheep) μου (of me), τὸ (the one) ἀπολωλός (having been lost)!’

¹¹ Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ὁ (the) ποιμὴν (shepherd) ὁ (-) καλός (good). ὁ (The) ποιμὴν (shepherd) ὁ (-) καλὸς (good), τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τίθησιν (lays down) ὑπὲρ (for) τῶν (the) προβάτων (sheep); ¹² ὁ (the) μισθωτὸς (hired servant) καὶ (however) οὐκ (not) ὢν (being) ποιμήν (the shepherd), οὗ (whose) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (are) τὰ (the) πρόβατα (sheep) ἴδια (own), θεωρεῖ (sees) τὸν (the) λύκον (wolf) ἐρχόμενον (coming), καὶ (and) ἀφίησιν (leaves) τὰ (the) πρόβατα (sheep), καὶ (and) φεύγει (flees)— καὶ (and) ὁ (the) λύκος (wolf) ἁρπάζει (snatches) αὐτὰ (them) καὶ (and) σκορπίζει (scatters)— ¹³ ὅτι (because) μισθωτός (a hired servant) ἐστιν (he is), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) μέλει (is himself concerned) αὐτῷ (to him) περὶ (about) τῶν (the) προβάτων (sheep). ¹⁴ Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ὁ (the) ποιμὴν (shepherd) ὁ (-) καλός (good); καὶ (and) γινώσκω (I know) τὰ (-) ἐμὰ (My own), καὶ (and) γινώσκουσί (am known) με (I) τὰ (by) ἐμά (Mine). ¹⁵ καθὼς (As) γινώσκει (knows) με (Me) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father), κἀγὼ (I also) γινώσκω (know) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father); καὶ (and) τὴν (the) ψυχήν (life) μου (of Me) τίθημι (I lay down) ὑπὲρ (for) τῶν (the) προβάτων (sheep). ¹⁶ καὶ (And) ἄλλα (other) πρόβατα (sheep) ἔχω (I have), ἃ (which) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (are) ἐκ (of) τῆς (the) αὐλῆς (fold) ταύτης (this); κἀκεῖνα (those also) δεῖ (it behooves) με (Me) ἀγαγεῖν (to bring), καὶ (and) τῆς (the) φωνῆς (voice) μου (of Me) ἀκούσουσιν (they will hear); καὶ (and) γενήσονται* (there will be) μία (one) ποίμνη (flock), εἷς (with one) ποιμήν (shepherd).
