²⁸ ὥσπερ (even as) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) οὐκ (not) ἦλθεν (came) διακονηθῆναι (to be served), ἀλλὰ (but) διακονῆσαι (to serve), καὶ (and) δοῦναι (to give) τὴν (the) ψυχὴν (life) αὐτοῦ (of Him) λύτρον (as a ransom) ἀντὶ (for) πολλῶν (many).”

²¹ Ἔφη (Said) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ‘Εὖ (Well done), δοῦλε (servant) ἀγαθὲ (good) καὶ (and) πιστέ (faithful)! ἐπὶ (Over) ὀλίγα (a few things) ἦς (you were) πιστός (faithful); ἐπὶ (over) πολλῶν (many things) σε (you) καταστήσω (will I set). εἴσελθε (Enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) χαρὰν (joy) τοῦ (of the) κυρίου (master) σου (of you)!’

¹⁰ Ὁ (The one) πιστὸς (faithful) ἐν (with) ἐλαχίστῳ (very little), καὶ (also) ἐν (with) πολλῷ (much) πιστός (faithful) ἐστιν (is); καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) ἐν (with) ἐλαχίστῳ (very little) ἄδικος (unrighteous), καὶ (also) ἐν (with) πολλῷ (much) ἄδικός (unrighteous) ἐστιν (is). ¹¹ εἰ (If) οὖν (therefore) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀδίκῳ (unrighteous) μαμωνᾷ (wealth), πιστοὶ (faithful) οὐκ (not) ἐγένεσθε (you have been), τὸ (the) ἀληθινὸν (true riches) τίς (who) ὑμῖν (to you) πιστεύσει (will entrust)? ¹² καὶ (And) εἰ (if) ἐν (in) τῷ (that which is) ἀλλοτρίῳ (of another), πιστοὶ (faithful) οὐκ (not) ἐγένεσθε (you have been), τὸ (that which) ὑμέτερον* (is yours) τίς (who) δώσει (will give) ὑμῖν (to you)?

¹⁷ Καὶ (And) εἶπεν (He said) αὐτῷ (to him), ‘Εὖγε (Well done), ἀγαθὲ (good) δοῦλε (servant)! ὅτι (Because) ἐν (in) ἐλαχίστῳ (very little), πιστὸς (faithful) ἐγένου (you were), ἴσθι (to be) ἐξουσίαν (having authority) ἔχων (you are) ἐπάνω (over) δέκα (ten) πόλεων (cities).’

⁵ Καὶ (And) ἤρεσεν (was pleasing) ὁ (the) λόγος (statement) ἐνώπιον (before) παντὸς (all) τοῦ (the) πλήθους (multitude); καὶ (and) ἐξελέξαντο (they chose) Στέφανον (Stephen), ἄνδρα (a man) πλήρης* (full) πίστεως (of faith) καὶ (and) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit) Ἁγίου (holy), καὶ (and) Φίλιππον (Philip), καὶ (and) Πρόχορον (Prochorus), καὶ (and) Νικάνορα (Nicanor), καὶ (and) Τίμωνα (Timon), καὶ (and) Παρμενᾶν (Parmenas), καὶ (and) Νικόλαον (Nicolas) προσήλυτον (a convert) Ἀντιοχέα (of Antioch),

⁸ Στέφανος (Stephen) δὲ (now), πλήρης (full) χάριτος (grace) καὶ (and) δυνάμεως (power), ἐποίει (was performing) τέρατα (wonders) καὶ (and) σημεῖα (signs) μεγάλα (great) ἐν (among) τῷ (the) λαῷ (people).

¹⁵ Καὶ (And) ἀτενίσαντες (having looked intently) εἰς (on) αὐτὸν (him), πάντες (all) οἱ (-) καθεζόμενοι (sitting) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) συνεδρίῳ (Council) εἶδον (saw) τὸ (the) πρόσωπον (face) αὐτοῦ (of him) ὡσεὶ (as) πρόσωπον (the face) ἀγγέλου (of an angel).

¹⁵ Καὶ (And) κατέβη (went down) Ἰακὼβ (Jacob) εἰς (into) Αἴγυπτον (Egypt) καὶ (and) ἐτελεύτησεν (died), αὐτὸς (he) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) πατέρες (fathers) ἡμῶν (of us), ¹⁶ καὶ (and) μετετέθησαν (they were carried over) εἰς (into) Συχὲμ (Shechem) καὶ (and) ἐτέθησαν (were placed) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) μνήματι (tomb) ᾧ (which) ὠνήσατο (had bought) Ἀβραὰμ (Abraham) τιμῆς (for a sum) ἀργυρίου (of silver) παρὰ (from) τῶν (the) υἱῶν (sons) Ἑμμὼρ* (of Hamor) ἐν (in) Συχέμ (Shechem). ¹⁷ Καθὼς (As) δὲ (now) ἤγγιζεν (was drawing near) ὁ (the) χρόνος (time) τῆς (of the) ἐπαγγελίας (promise) ἧς (that) ὡμολόγησεν (had made) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τῷ (-) Ἀβραάμ (to Abraham), ηὔξησεν (increased) ὁ (the) λαὸς (people) καὶ (and) ἐπληθύνθη (multiplied) ἐν (in) Αἰγύπτῳ (Egypt), ¹⁸ ἄχρι (until) οὗ (that) ἀνέστη (there arose) βασιλεὺς (king) ἕτερος (another) ἐπ’ (over) Αἴγυπτον (Egypt), ὃς (who) οὐκ (not) ᾔδει (knew) τὸν (-) Ἰωσήφ (Joseph). ¹⁹ οὗτος (He) κατασοφισάμενος (having dealt treacherously with) τὸ (the) γένος (race) ἡμῶν (of us), ἐκάκωσεν (he mistreated) τοὺς (the) πατέρας (fathers) [ἡμῶν] (of us), τοῦ (-) ποιεῖν (making them) τὰ (the) βρέφη (infants) ἔκθετα (abandon) αὐτῶν (of them) εἰς (unto) τὸ (the) μὴ (not) ζωογονεῖσθαι (they would live). ²⁰ Ἐν (In) ᾧ (that) καιρῷ (time) ἐγεννήθη (was born) Μωϋσῆς (Moses), καὶ (and) ἦν (he was) ἀστεῖος (beautiful) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), ὃς (who) ἀνετράφη (was brought up) μῆνας (months) τρεῖς (three) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) οἴκῳ (house) τοῦ (of the) πατρός (father). ²¹ ἐκτεθέντος (Having been set outside) δὲ (then) αὐτοῦ (he), ἀνείλατο (took up) αὐτὸν (him) ἡ (the) θυγάτηρ (daughter) Φαραὼ (of Pharaoh), καὶ (and) ἀνεθρέψατο (brought up) αὐτὸν (him) ἑαυτῇ (for herself) εἰς (for) υἱόν (a son). ²² καὶ (And) ἐπαιδεύθη (was instructed) Μωϋσῆς (Moses) [ἐν] (in) πάσῃ (all) σοφίᾳ (the wisdom) Αἰγυπτίων (of the Egyptians); ἦν (he was) δὲ (now) δυνατὸς (mighty) ἐν (in) λόγοις (words) καὶ (and) ἔργοις (deeds) αὐτοῦ (of him). ²³ Ὡς (When) δὲ (then) ἐπληροῦτο (was fulfilled) αὐτῷ (to him) τεσσερακονταέτης (of forty years) χρόνος (a period), ἀνέβη (it came) ἐπὶ (into) τὴν (the) καρδίαν (mind) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἐπισκέψασθαι (to visit) τοὺς (the) ἀδελφοὺς (brothers) αὐτοῦ (of him), τοὺς (the) υἱοὺς (sons) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel). ²⁴ καὶ (And) ἰδών (having seen) τινα (a certain one) ἀδικούμενον (being wronged), ἠμύνατο (he defended him) καὶ (and) ἐποίησεν (did) ἐκδίκησιν (vengeance) τῷ (for the one) καταπονουμένῳ (being oppressed), πατάξας (having struck down) τὸν (the) Αἰγύπτιον (Egyptian). ²⁵ ἐνόμιζεν (He was supposing) δὲ (now) συνιέναι (to understand) τοὺς (the) ἀδελφοὺς (brothers) [αὐτοῦ] (of him) ὅτι (that) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) διὰ (by) χειρὸς (the hand) αὐτοῦ (of him) δίδωσιν (is giving) σωτηρίαν (salvation) αὐτοῖς (them), οἱ (-) δὲ (but) οὐ (not) συνῆκαν (they understood). ²⁶ Τῇ (On the) τε (and) ἐπιούσῃ (following) ἡμέρᾳ (day), ὤφθη (he appeared) αὐτοῖς (to those who) μαχομένοις (were quarreling) καὶ (and) συνήλλασσεν (urged) αὐτοὺς (them) εἰς (to) εἰρήνην (peace), εἰπών (having said), ‘Ἄνδρες (Men), ἀδελφοί (brothers) ἐστε (you are). ἱνα‿ (So that) τί (why) ἀδικεῖτε (wrong you) ἀλλήλους (one another)?’ ²⁷ Ὁ (The one) δὲ (however) ἀδικῶν (mistreating) τὸν (the) πλησίον (neighbor) ἀπώσατο (pushed away) αὐτὸν (him), εἰπών (having said), ‘Τίς (Who) σε (you) κατέστησεν (appointed), ἄρχοντα (ruler) καὶ (and) δικαστὴν (judge) ἐφ’ (over) ἡμῶν (us)? ²⁸ μὴ (Not) ἀνελεῖν (to kill) με (me) σὺ (you) θέλεις (desire), ὃν (the same) τρόπον (way) ἀνεῖλες (you put to death) ἐχθὲς (yesterday) τὸν (the) Αἰγύπτιον (Egyptian)?’ ²⁹ ἔφυγεν (Fled) δὲ (then) Μωϋσῆς (Moses) ἐν (at) τῷ (the) λόγῳ (remark) τούτῳ (this), καὶ (and) ἐγένετο (became) πάροικος (exiled) ἐν (in) γῇ (the land) Μαδιάμ (of Midian), οὗ (where) ἐγέννησεν (he begat) υἱοὺς (sons) δύο (two). ³⁰ Καὶ (And) πληρωθέντων (having been passed) ἐτῶν (years) τεσσεράκοντα (forty), ὤφθη (appeared) αὐτῷ (to him) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐρήμῳ (wilderness) τοῦ (of the) ὄρους (Mount) Σινᾶ (Sinai) ἄγγελος (an angel) ἐν (in) φλογὶ (a flame) πυρὸς (of fire) βάτου (of a bush). ³¹ ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Μωϋσῆς (Moses) ἰδὼν (having seen it), ἐθαύμαζεν (marveled at) τὸ (the) ὅραμα (vision); προσερχομένου (coming near) δὲ (then) αὐτοῦ (of him) κατανοῆσαι (to behold it), ἐγένετο (there was) φωνὴ (the voice) Κυρίου (of the Lord): ³² ‘Ἐγὼ (I am) ὁ (the) Θεὸς (God) τῶν (of the) πατέρων (Fathers) σου (of you), ὁ (the) Θεὸς (God) Ἀβραὰμ (of Abraham), καὶ (and) Ἰσαὰκ (of Isaac), καὶ (and) Ἰακώβ (of Jacob).’ ἔντρομος (Terrified) δὲ (then) γενόμενος (having become) Μωϋσῆς (Moses), οὐκ (not) ἐτόλμα (he dared) κατανοῆσαι (to look). ³³ Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord), ‘Λῦσον (Take off) τὸ (the) ὑπόδημα (sandal) τῶν (of the) ποδῶν (feet) σου (of you), ὁ (-) γὰρ (for) τόπος (the place) ἐφ’ (on) ᾧ (which) ἕστηκας (you stand), γῆ (ground) ἁγία (holy) ἐστίν (is). ³⁴ ἰδὼν (Having seen), εἶδον (I saw) τὴν (the) κάκωσιν (oppression) τοῦ (of the) λαοῦ (people) μου (of Me) τοῦ (-) ἐν (in) Αἰγύπτῳ (Egypt), καὶ (and) τοῦ (the) στεναγμοῦ (groans) αὐτοῦ (of them) ἤκουσα (I have heard), καὶ (and) κατέβην (I have come down) ἐξελέσθαι (to deliver) αὐτούς (them); καὶ (and) νῦν (now) δεῦρο (come), ἀποστείλω (I will send) σε (you) εἰς (to) Αἴγυπτον (Egypt).’ ³⁵ Τοῦτον (This) τὸν (-) Μωϋσῆν (Moses), ὃν (whom) ἠρνήσαντο (they rejected), εἰπόντες (having said), ‘Τίς (Who) σε (you) κατέστησεν (appointed) ἄρχοντα (ruler) καὶ (and) δικαστήν (judge)?’ — τοῦτον (him) ὁ (whom) Θεὸς (God as) καὶ (and) ἄρχοντα (ruler) καὶ (and) λυτρωτὴν (redeemer) ἀπέσταλκεν (sent) σὺν (by) χειρὶ (the hand) ἀγγέλου (of the angel) τοῦ (-) ὀφθέντος (having appeared) αὐτῷ (to him) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βάτῳ (bush) — ³⁶ οὗτος (this one) ἐξήγαγεν (led out) αὐτοὺς (them), ποιήσας (having done) τέρατα (wonders) καὶ (and) σημεῖα (signs) ἐν (in) γῇ (the land) Αἰγύπτῳ (of Egypt), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) Ἐρυθρᾷ (the Red) Θαλάσσῃ (Sea), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐρήμῳ (wilderness) ἔτη (years) τεσσεράκοντα (forty). ³⁷ Οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Μωϋσῆς (Moses) ὁ (-) εἴπας (having said) τοῖς (to the) υἱοῖς (sons) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel), ‘Προφήτην (A prophet) ὑμῖν (for you) ἀναστήσει (will raise up) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐκ (out from) τῶν (the) ἀδελφῶν (brothers) ὑμῶν (of you), ὡς (like) ἐμέ (me).’ ³⁸ οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the one) γενόμενος (having been) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐκκλησίᾳ (congregation) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐρήμῳ (wilderness), μετὰ (with) τοῦ (the) ἀγγέλου (angel) τοῦ (-) λαλοῦντος (speaking) αὐτῷ (to him) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὄρει (Mount) Σινᾶ (Sinai), καὶ (and) τῶν (of the) πατέρων (fathers) ἡμῶν (of us), ὃς (who) ἐδέξατο (received) λόγια (oracles) ζῶντα (living) δοῦναι (to give) ἡμῖν* (to us), ³⁹ ᾧ (to whom) οὐκ (not) ἠθέλησαν (were willing) ὑπήκοοι (obedient) γενέσθαι (to be) οἱ (the) πατέρες (fathers) ἡμῶν (of us), ἀλλὰ (but) ἀπώσαντο (thrust away), καὶ (and) ἐστράφησαν (turned back) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) καρδίαις (hearts) αὐτῶν (of them) εἰς (to) Αἴγυπτον (Egypt), ⁴⁰ εἰπόντες (having said) τῷ (-) Ἀαρών (to Aaron), ‘Ποίησον (Make) ἡμῖν (us) θεοὺς (gods) οἳ (who) προπορεύσονται (will go before) ἡμῶν (us). ὁ (-) γὰρ (As for) Μωϋσῆς (Moses) οὗτος (this), ὃς (who) ἐξήγαγεν (brought out) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐκ (from) γῆς (the land) Αἰγύπτου (of Egypt), οὐκ (not) οἴδαμεν (we know) τί (what) ἐγένετο (has happened) αὐτῷ (to him).’ ⁴¹ Καὶ (And) ἐμοσχοποίησαν (they made a calf) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) ἐκείναις (those) καὶ (and) ἀνήγαγον (offered) θυσίαν (a sacrifice) τῷ (to the) εἰδώλῳ (idol), καὶ (and) εὐφραίνοντο (they were rejoicing) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ἔργοις (works) τῶν (of the) χειρῶν (hands) αὐτῶν (of them). ⁴² ἔστρεψεν (Turned away) δὲ (however) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) καὶ (and) παρέδωκεν (delivered) αὐτοὺς (them) λατρεύειν (to worship) τῇ (the) στρατιᾷ (host) τοῦ (of) οὐρανοῦ (heaven), καθὼς (as) γέγραπται (it has been written) ἐν (in the) βίβλῳ (book) τῶν (of the) προφητῶν (prophets): ‘Μὴ (Not) σφάγια (slain beasts) καὶ (and) θυσίας (sacrifices) προσηνέγκατέ (did you offer) μοι (to Me), ἔτη (years) τεσσεράκοντα (forty) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐρήμῳ (wilderness), οἶκος (O house) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel)? ⁵⁰ οὐχὶ (Not) ἡ (the) χείρ (hand) μου (of Me) ἐποίησεν (has made) ταῦτα (these things) πάντα (all)?’ ⁵¹ Σκληροτράχηλοι (Stiff-necked) καὶ (and) ἀπερίτμητοι (uncircumcised) καρδίαις (in heart) καὶ (and) τοῖς (-) ὠσίν (ears), ὑμεῖς (you) ἀεὶ (always) τῷ (the) Πνεύματι (Spirit) τῷ (-) Ἁγίῳ (Holy) ἀντιπίπτετε (resist); ὡς (as) οἱ (the) πατέρες (fathers) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you). ⁵² τίνα (Which) τῶν (of the) προφητῶν (prophets) οὐκ (not) ἐδίωξαν (did persecute) οἱ (the) πατέρες (fathers) ὑμῶν (of you)? καὶ (And) ἀπέκτειναν (they killed) τοὺς (those) προκαταγγείλαντας (having foretold) περὶ (about) τῆς (the) ἐλεύσεως (coming) τοῦ (of the) Δικαίου (Righteous One), οὗ (of whom) νῦν (now) ὑμεῖς (you) προδόται (betrayers) καὶ (and) φονεῖς (murderers) ἐγένεσθε (have become), ⁵³ οἵτινες (who) ἐλάβετε (received) τὸν (the) νόμον (law) εἰς (by) διαταγὰς (the ordination) ἀγγέλων (of angels), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἐφυλάξατε (have kept it).”

³⁵ ὅτε (When) δὲ (now) ἐγένετο (he came) ἐπὶ (to) τοὺς (the) ἀναβαθμούς (stairs), συνέβη (it happened that) βαστάζεσθαι (was carried) αὐτὸν (he) ὑπὸ (by) τῶν (the) στρατιωτῶν (soldiers), διὰ (because of) τὴν (the) βίαν (violence) τοῦ (of the) ὄχλου (crowd).

⁷ εἴτε (or) διακονίαν (service), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) διακονίᾳ (service); εἴτε (or) ὁ (-) διδάσκων (teaching), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) διδασκαλίᾳ (teaching); ⁸ εἴτε (or) ὁ (-) παρακαλῶν (exhorting), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) παρακλήσει (exhortation); ὁ (-) μεταδιδοὺς (giving), ἐν (in) ἁπλότητι (generosity); ὁ (-) προϊστάμενος (leading), ἐν (with) σπουδῇ (diligence); ὁ (-) ἐλεῶν (showing mercy), ἐν (with) ἱλαρότητι (cheerfulness).

¹⁵ Παρακαλῶ (I exhort) δὲ (now) ὑμᾶς (you), ἀδελφοί (brothers), οἴδατε (you know) τὴν (the) οἰκίαν (house) Στεφανᾶ (of Stephanas), ὅτι (that) ἐστὶν (it is) ἀπαρχὴ (firstfruit) τῆς (-) Ἀχαΐας (of Achaia), καὶ (and) εἰς (to) διακονίαν (service) τοῖς (to the) ἁγίοις (saints), ἔταξαν (they have devoted) ἑαυτούς (themselves),

¹⁴ καὶ (and) τοὺς (-) πλείονας (most) τῶν (of the) ἀδελφῶν (brothers), ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord) πεποιθότας (trusting) τοῖς (by the) δεσμοῖς (chains) μου (of me), περισσοτέρως (more abundantly) τολμᾶν (to dare) ἀφόβως (fearlessly) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) λαλεῖν (to speak).

² ἀλλὰ (but) προπαθόντες (having previously suffered) καὶ (and) ὑβρισθέντες (having been mistreated) καθὼς (just as) οἴδατε (you know), ἐν (in) Φιλίπποις (Philippi), ἐπαρρησιασάμεθα (we had boldness) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Θεῷ (God) ἡμῶν (of us), λαλῆσαι (to speak) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐν (amid) πολλῷ (much) ἀγῶνι (conflict).

¹ Σὺ (You) οὖν (therefore), τέκνον (child) μου (of me), ἐνδυναμοῦ (be strong) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) χάριτι (grace) τῇ (that is) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).

¹⁰ οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ἄδικος (unjust is) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God), ἐπιλαθέσθαι (to forget) τοῦ (the) ἔργου (work) ὑμῶν (of you) καὶ (and) τῆς (the) ἀγάπης (love) ἧς (that) ἐνεδείξασθε (you have shown) εἰς (toward) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) αὐτοῦ (of Him), διακονήσαντες (having ministered) τοῖς (to the) ἁγίοις (saints) καὶ (and) διακονοῦντες (still ministering).

¹⁰ ἕκαστος (each) καθὼς (as) ἔλαβεν (has received) χάρισμα (a gift), εἰς (to) ἑαυτοὺς (each other) αὐτὸ (them) διακονοῦντες (serving), ὡς (as) καλοὶ (good) οἰκονόμοι (stewards) ποικίλης (of the manifold) χάριτος (grace) Θεοῦ (of God): ¹¹ εἴ (if) τις (anyone) λαλεῖ (speaks), ὡς (as) λόγια (oracles) Θεοῦ (of God); εἴ (if) τις (anyone) διακονεῖ (serves), ὡς (as) ἐξ (of) ἰσχύος (strength) ἧς (which) χορηγεῖ (supplies) ὁ (-) Θεός (God), ἵνα (so that) ἐν (in) πᾶσιν (all things) δοξάζηται (may be glorified) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), ᾧ (to whom) ἐστιν (be) ἡ (the) δόξα (glory) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) κράτος (power) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (ages) τῶν (of the) αἰώνων (ages). ἀμήν (Amen).
