¹⁹ Ἄνθρωπος (A man) δέ (now) τις (certain) ἦν (there was) πλούσιος (rich), καὶ (and) ἐνεδιδύσκετο (he was clothed in) πορφύραν (purple) καὶ (and) βύσσον (fine linen), εὐφραινόμενος (making good cheer) καθ’ (every) ἡμέραν (day) λαμπρῶς (in splendor).

¹⁷ καὶ (And) ἐνδιδύσκουσιν (they put on) αὐτὸν (Him) πορφύραν (purple), καὶ (and) περιτιθέασιν (placed on) αὐτῷ (Him), πλέξαντες (having twisted together) ἀκάνθινον (of thorns) στέφανον (a crown),

²⁰ καὶ (And) ὅτε (when) ἐνέπαιξαν (they had mocked) αὐτῷ (Him), ἐξέδυσαν (they took off) αὐτὸν (him) τὴν (the) πορφύραν (purple) καὶ (and) ἐνέδυσαν (put on) αὐτὸν (Him) τὰ (the) ἱμάτια (garments) αὐτοῦ (His) ‹ἴδια› (own). Καὶ (And) ἐξάγουσιν (they are leading out) αὐτὸν (him), ἵνα (that) σταυρώσωσιν (they might crucify) αὐτόν (Him).

¹⁶ Εἶπεν (He spoke) δὲ (then) παραβολὴν (a parable) πρὸς (to) αὐτοὺς (them), λέγων (saying), “Ἀνθρώπου (Of a man) τινὸς (certain) πλουσίου (rich) εὐφόρησεν (brought forth abundantly) ἡ (the) χώρα (ground). ¹⁷ καὶ (And) διελογίζετο (he was reasoning) ἐν (within) ἑαυτῷ (himself), λέγων (saying), ‘Τί (What) ποιήσω (shall I do), ὅτι (for) οὐκ (not) ἔχω (I have) ποῦ (where) συνάξω (I will store up) τοὺς (the) καρπούς (fruits) μου (of me)?’ ¹⁸ καὶ (And) εἶπεν (he said), ‘Τοῦτο (This) ποιήσω (will I do): καθελῶ (I will tear down) μου (my) τὰς (-) ἀποθήκας (barns) καὶ (and) μείζονας (greater) οἰκοδομήσω (will build), καὶ (and) συνάξω (will store up) ἐκεῖ (there) πάντα (all) τὸν (the) σῖτον (grain) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) ἀγαθά (goods) μου (of me). ¹⁹ καὶ (And) ἐρῶ (I will say) τῇ (to the) ψυχῇ (soul) μου (of me), “Ψυχή (Soul), ἔχεις (you have) πολλὰ (many) ἀγαθὰ (good things) κείμενα (laid up) εἰς (for) ἔτη (years) πολλά (many); ἀναπαύου (take your rest); φάγε (eat), πίε (drink), εὐφραίνου (be merry).”’ ²⁰ Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (-) Θεός (God), ‘Ἄφρων (Fool)! ταύτῃ (This) τῇ (-) νυκτὶ (night), τὴν (the) ψυχήν (soul) σου (of you) ἀπαιτοῦσιν (is required) ἀπὸ (of) σοῦ (you); ἃ (what) δὲ (now) ἡτοίμασας (you did prepare)— τίνι (to whom) ἔσται (will it be)?’ ²¹ Οὕτως (So is) ὁ (the one) θησαυρίζων (treasuring up) ἑαυτῷ* (for himself), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) εἰς (toward) Θεὸν (God) πλουτῶν (being rich).”

¹³ Καὶ (And) μετ’ (after) οὐ (not) πολλὰς (many) ἡμέρας (days), συναγαγὼν (having gathered together) πάντα (all), ὁ (the) νεώτερος (younger) υἱὸς (son) ἀπεδήμησεν (went away) εἰς (into) χώραν (a country) μακράν (distant), καὶ (and) ἐκεῖ (there) διεσκόρπισεν (he wasted) τὴν (the) οὐσίαν (estate) αὐτοῦ (of him), ζῶν (living) ἀσώτως (prodigally).

¹ Ἔλεγεν (He was saying) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) μαθητάς (disciples), “Ἄνθρωπός (A man) τις (certain) ἦν (there was) πλούσιος (rich), ὃς (who) εἶχεν (had) οἰκονόμον (a manager), καὶ (and) οὗτος (he) διεβλήθη (was accused) αὐτῷ (unto him) ὡς (as) διασκορπίζων (is wasting) τὰ (the) ὑπάρχοντα (possessions) αὐτοῦ (of him).

²⁴ Ἰδὼν (Having seen) δὲ (then) αὐτὸν (him), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) [περίλυπον (sorrowful) γενόμενον] (became), εἶπεν (saying), “Πῶς (How) δυσκόλως (difficultly) οἱ (those) τὰ (-) χρήματα (riches) ἔχοντες (having), εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) εἰσπορεύονται (shall enter). ²⁵ εὐκοπώτερον (Easier) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (it is) κάμηλον (a camel) διὰ (through) τρήματος (an eye) βελόνης (of a needle) εἰσελθεῖν (to go), ἢ (than) πλούσιον (a rich man) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter).”

¹ Ἄγε (Come) νῦν (now), οἱ (you) πλούσιοι (rich), κλαύσατε (weep), ὀλολύζοντες (wailing) ἐπὶ (over) ταῖς (the) ταλαιπωρίαις (miseries) ὑμῶν (upon you) ταῖς (that are) ἐπερχομέναις (coming). ² ὁ (The) πλοῦτος (riches) ὑμῶν (of You) σέσηπεν (have rotted), καὶ (and) τὰ (the) ἱμάτια (garments) ὑμῶν (of you) σητόβρωτα (moth-eaten) γέγονεν (have become). ³ ὁ (The) χρυσὸς (gold) ὑμῶν (of you) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) ἄργυρος (silver) κατίωται (have corroded), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) ἰὸς (rust) αὐτῶν (of them) εἰς (for) μαρτύριον (a testimony) ὑμῖν (against you) ἔσται (will be), καὶ (and) φάγεται (will eat) τὰς (the) σάρκας (flesh) ὑμῶν (of you) ὡς (like) πῦρ (fire). Ἐθησαυρίσατε (You have treasured up) ἐν (in) ἐσχάταις (the last) ἡμέραις (days). ⁴ ἰδοὺ (Behold), ὁ (the) μισθὸς (wage) τῶν (of the) ἐργατῶν (workmen) τῶν (-) ἀμησάντων (having harvested) τὰς (the) χώρας (fields) ὑμῶν (of you), ὁ (-) ἀφυστερημένος (having been kept back) ἀφ’ (by) ὑμῶν (you), κράζει (cries out), καὶ (and) αἱ (the) βοαὶ (cries) τῶν (of those) θερισάντων (having harvested), εἰς (into) τὰ (the) ὦτα (ears) Κυρίου (of the Lord) Σαβαὼθ (of Hosts) εἰσεληλύθασιν* (have entered). ⁵ Ἐτρυφήσατε (You lived in luxury) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), καὶ (and) ἐσπαταλήσατε (lived in self-indulgence). ἐθρέψατε (You have fattened) τὰς (the) καρδίας (hearts) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐν (in) ἡμέρᾳ (the day) σφαγῆς (of slaughter).

⁴ καὶ (And) ἡ (the) γυνὴ (woman) ἦν (was) περιβεβλημένη (clothed in) πορφυροῦν (purple) καὶ (and) κόκκινον (scarlet), καὶ (and) κεχρυσωμένη (adorned) χρυσίῳ (with gold) καὶ (and) λίθῳ (stone) τιμίῳ (precious) καὶ (and) μαργαρίταις (pearls), ἔχουσα (holding) ποτήριον (a cup) χρυσοῦν (golden) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) χειρὶ (hand) αὐτῆς (of her), γέμον (being full) βδελυγμάτων (of abominations) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) ἀκάθαρτα (impurity) τῆς (of the) πορνείας (sexual immorality) αὐτῆς (of her).

⁷ ὅσα (So much as) ἐδόξασεν (she has glorified) αὑτὴν (herself) καὶ (and) ἐστρηνίασεν (lived in luxury), τοσοῦτον (as much) δότε (give) αὐτῇ (to her) βασανισμὸν (torment) καὶ (and) πένθος (misery), ὅτι (because) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) αὐτῆς (of herself) λέγει (she says) ὅτι (-), ‘Κάθημαι (I sit) βασίλισσα (as a queen), καὶ (and) χήρα (a widow) οὐκ (never) εἰμί (I am), καὶ (and) πένθος (mourning) οὐ (never) μὴ (not) ἴδω (shall I see).’
