²⁵ εἰ (If) δὲ (however), ὃ (what) οὐ (not) βλέπομεν (we see) ἐλπίζομεν (we hope for), δι’ (in) ὑπομονῆς (patience) ἀπεκδεχόμεθα (we await).

⁴ ὅσα (Whatever) γὰρ (for) προεγράφη (was written in the past), (πάντα) (all) εἰς (for) τὴν (-) ἡμετέραν (our) διδασκαλίαν (instruction) ἐγράφη (was written), ἵνα (so that) διὰ (through) τῆς (-) ὑπομονῆς (endurance) καὶ (and) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) παρακλήσεως (encouragement) τῶν (of the) γραφῶν (Scriptures), τὴν (-) ἐλπίδα (hope) ἔχωμεν (we might have).

³ ἀδιαλείπτως (unceasingly) μνημονεύοντες (remembering) ὑμῶν (your) τοῦ (-) ἔργου (work) τῆς (-) πίστεως (of faith) καὶ (and) τοῦ (-) κόπου (labor) τῆς (-) ἀγάπης (of love), καὶ (and) τῆς (the) ὑπομονῆς (endurance) τῆς (of the) ἐλπίδος (hope) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), ἔμπροσθεν (before) τοῦ (the) Θεοῦ (God) καὶ (and) Πατρὸς (Father) ἡμῶν (of us),

⁵ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Κύριος (the Lord) κατευθύναι (may direct) ὑμῶν (your) τὰς (-) καρδίας (hearts) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) ἀγάπην (love) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) καὶ (and) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) ὑπομονὴν (steadfastness) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ).

¹¹ Ἐπιθυμοῦμεν (We desire) δὲ (now), ἕκαστον (each) ὑμῶν (of you) τὴν (the) αὐτὴν (same) ἐνδείκνυσθαι (to show), σπουδὴν (earnestness), πρὸς (toward) τὴν (the) πληροφορίαν (full assurance) τῆς (of the) ἐλπίδος (hope) ἄχρι (unto) τέλους (the end),

³⁶ ὑπομονῆς (Of endurance) γὰρ (for) ἔχετε (You have) χρείαν (need), ἵνα (so that), τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ποιήσαντες (having done), κομίσησθε (you may receive) τὴν (the) ἐπαγγελίαν (promise).

³ γινώσκοντες (knowing) ὅτι (that) τὸ (the) δοκίμιον (testing) ὑμῶν (of your) τῆς (-) πίστεως (faith) κατεργάζεται (produces) ὑπομονήν (endurance).

⁷ Μακροθυμήσατε (Be patient) οὖν (therefore), ἀδελφοί (brothers), ἕως (until) τῆς (the) παρουσίας (coming) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord). ἰδοὺ (Behold), ὁ (the) γεωργὸς (farmer) ἐκδέχεται (awaits) τὸν (the) τίμιον (precious) καρπὸν (fruit) τῆς (of the) γῆς (earth), μακροθυμῶν (being patient) ἐπ’ (for) αὐτῷ (it) ἕως (until) λάβῃ (it receives) πρόϊμον (the early) καὶ (and) ὄψιμον (latter rains). ⁸ μακροθυμήσατε (Be patient) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you); στηρίξατε (strengthen) τὰς (the) καρδίας (hearts) ὑμῶν (of you), ὅτι (because) ἡ (the) παρουσία (coming) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἤγγικεν (has drawn near). ⁹ μὴ (Not) στενάζετε (grumble) ἀδελφοί (brothers) κατ’ (against) ἀλλήλων (one another), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) κριθῆτε (you may be condemned). ἰδοὺ (Behold), ὁ (the) κριτὴς (Judge) πρὸ (before) τῶν (the) θυρῶν (doors) ἕστηκεν (is standing). ¹⁰ Ὑπόδειγμα (As an example) λάβετε (take), ἀδελφοί (brothers), τῆς (-) κακοπαθίας (of suffering evils) καὶ (and) τῆς (-) μακροθυμίας (of patience), τοὺς (the) προφήτας (prophets) οἳ (who) ἐλάλησαν (spoke) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) Κυρίου (of the Lord). ¹¹ ἰδοὺ (Behold), μακαρίζομεν (we count blessed) τοὺς (those) ὑπομείναντας (having persevered). τὴν (The) ὑπομονὴν (perseverance) Ἰὼβ (of Job) ἠκούσατε (you have heard of), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) τέλος (outcome) Κυρίου (from the Lord) εἴδετε (you have seen), ὅτι (that) πολύσπλαγχνός (full of compassion) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord), καὶ (and) οἰκτίρμων (is merciful).

⁹ Ἐγὼ (I) Ἰωάννης (John), ὁ (the) ἀδελφὸς (brother) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and) συνκοινωνὸς (fellow-partaker) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) θλίψει (tribulation) καὶ (and) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) καὶ (and) ὑπομονῇ (endurance) ἐν (in) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), ἐγενόμην (was) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) νήσῳ (island) τῇ (-) καλουμένῃ (called) Πάτμῳ (Patmos), διὰ (on account of) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μαρτυρίαν (testimony) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus).

² Οἶδα (I know) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) σου (of you), καὶ (and) τὸν (the) κόπον (labor) καὶ (and) τὴν (-) ὑπομονήν (endurance) σου (of you), καὶ (and) ὅτι (that) οὐ (not) δύνῃ (you are able) βαστάσαι (to tolerate) κακούς (evil ones). καὶ (And) ἐπείρασας (you have tested) τοὺς (those) λέγοντας (claiming) ἑαυτοὺς (to be) ἀποστόλους (apostles) καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) εἰσίν (are), καὶ (and) εὗρες (you have found) αὐτοὺς (them) ψευδεῖς (false). ³ καὶ (And) ὑπομονὴν (perseverance) ἔχεις (you have), καὶ (and) ἐβάστασας (have endured) διὰ (for the sake of) τὸ (the) ὄνομά (name) μου (of Me) καὶ (and) οὐ (not) κεκοπίακες (have grown weary).

¹⁰ Ὅτι (Because) ἐτήρησας (you have kept) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τῆς (of the) ὑπομονῆς (patient endurance) μου (of Me), κἀγώ (I also) σε (you) τηρήσω (will keep) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) ὥρας (hour) τοῦ (of the) πειρασμοῦ (trial) τῆς (-) μελλούσης (being about) ἔρχεσθαι (to come) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) οἰκουμένης (inhabited world) ὅλης (whole), πειράσαι (to try) τοὺς (those) κατοικοῦντας (dwelling) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth).

¹⁰ “Εἴ (If) τις (anyone is to go) εἰς (into) αἰχμαλωσίαν (captivity), εἰς (into) αἰχμαλωσίαν (captivity) ὑπάγει (he goes); εἴ (If) τις (anyone) ἐν (with) μαχαίρῃ (the sword) ἀποκτανθῆναι* (is to be killed), 〈δεῖ〉 (it is necessary for) αὐτὸν (him) ἐν (by) μαχαίρῃ (the sword) ἀποκτανθῆναι (to be killed).” Ὧδέ (Here) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) ὑπομονὴ (endurance) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) πίστις (faith) τῶν (of the) ἁγίων (saints).
