²⁷ ἵνα (That) δὲ (however) μὴ (not) σκανδαλίσωμεν (we might offend) αὐτούς (them), πορευθεὶς (having gone) εἰς (to) θάλασσαν (sea), βάλε (cast) ἄγκιστρον (a hook), καὶ (and) τὸν (the) ἀναβάντα (having come up) πρῶτον (first) ἰχθὺν (fish) ἆρον (take), καὶ (and) ἀνοίξας (having opened) τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth) αὐτοῦ (of it), εὑρήσεις (you will find) στατῆρα (a four-drachma coin). ἐκεῖνον (That) λαβὼν (having taken), δὸς (give) αὐτοῖς (to them) ἀντὶ (for) ἐμοῦ (Me) καὶ (and) σοῦ (yourself).”

⁵⁹ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) ἀρχιερεῖς (the chief priests) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) συνέδριον (Council) ὅλον (whole) ἐζήτουν (were seeking) ψευδομαρτυρίαν (false testimony) κατὰ (against) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), ὅπως (so that) αὐτὸν (him) θανατώσωσιν (they might put to death); ⁶⁰ καὶ (but) οὐχ (not any) εὗρον (they found), πολλῶν (of many) προσελθόντων (having come forward as) ψευδομαρτύρων (false witnesses). ¹⁷ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Τὰ (The things) Καίσαρος (of Caesar), ἀπόδοτε (give back) Καίσαρι (to Caesar), καὶ (and) τὰ (the things) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God).” Καὶ (And) ἐξεθαύμαζον (they were amazed) ἐπ’ (at) αὐτῷ (Him).

⁵⁵ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) ἀρχιερεῖς (the chief priests) καὶ (and) ὅλον (all) τὸ (the) συνέδριον (Council) ἐζήτουν (were seeking) κατὰ (against) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) μαρτυρίαν (testimony), εἰς (to) τὸ (-) θανατῶσαι (put to death) αὐτόν (Him), καὶ (but) οὐχ (not) ηὕρισκον (they were finding any). ⁵⁶ πολλοὶ (Many) γὰρ (for) ἐψευδομαρτύρουν (were bearing false testimony) κατ’ (against) αὐτοῦ (Him), καὶ (but) ἴσαι (alike) αἱ (their) μαρτυρίαι (testimonies) οὐκ (not) ἦσαν (were).

⁶¹ Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) ἐσιώπα (He was silent), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἀπεκρίνατο (did He answer) οὐδέν (nothing). Πάλιν (Again) ὁ (the) ἀρχιερεὺς (high priest) ἐπηρώτα (was questioning) αὐτὸν (Him), καὶ (and) λέγει (says) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Χριστὸς (Christ), ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (of the) Εὐλογητοῦ (Blessed One)?” ⁶² Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said), “Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am). καὶ (And) ὄψεσθε (you will see) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἐκ (at the) δεξιῶν (right hand) καθήμενον (sitting) τῆς (of) δυνάμεως (Power), καὶ (and) ἐρχόμενον (coming) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) νεφελῶν (clouds) τοῦ (of) οὐρανοῦ (heaven).”

³ Καὶ (And) κατηγόρουν (were accusing) αὐτοῦ (Him) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) πολλά (of many things). ⁴ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) πάλιν (again) ἐπηρώτα (began to question) αὐτὸν (Him), λέγων (saying), “Οὐκ (Not) ἀποκρίνῃ (answer You) οὐδέν (nothing)? ἴδε (See) πόσα (how many things) σου (You) κατηγοροῦσιν (they testify against)!” ⁵ Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) οὐκέτι (no longer) οὐδὲν (nothing) ἀπεκρίθη (answered), ὥστε (so as) θαυμάζειν (to amaze) τὸν (-) Πιλᾶτον (Pilate).

²⁰ Καὶ (And) παρατηρήσαντες (having watched Him), ἀπέστειλαν (they sent) ἐνκαθέτους (spies), ὑποκρινομένους (feigning) ἑαυτοὺς (themselves) δικαίους (righteous) εἶναι (to be), ἵνα (that) ἐπιλάβωνται (they might catch) αὐτοῦ (Him) λόγου (in talk), ὥστε (in order) παραδοῦναι (to deliver) αὐτὸν (Him) τῇ (to the) ἀρχῇ (rule) καὶ (and) τῇ (to the) ἐξουσίᾳ (authority) τοῦ (of the) ἡγεμόνος (governor). ²¹ καὶ (And) ἐπηρώτησαν (they questioned) αὐτὸν (Him), λέγοντες (saying), “Διδάσκαλε (Teacher), οἴδαμεν (we know) ὅτι (that) ὀρθῶς (rightly) λέγεις (You speak) καὶ (and) διδάσκεις (teach), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) λαμβάνεις (receive) πρόσωπον (any person), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐπ’ (on the basis of) ἀληθείας (truth) τὴν (the) ὁδὸν (way) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) διδάσκεις (teach). ²² ἔξεστιν (Is it lawful) ἡμᾶς (for us) Καίσαρι (to Caesar) φόρον (tribute) δοῦναι (to give), ἢ (or) οὔ (not)?” ²³ Κατανοήσας (Having perceived) δὲ (however) αὐτῶν (of them) τὴν (the) πανουργίαν (craftiness), εἶπεν (He said) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), ²⁴ “Δείξατέ (Show) μοι (Me) δηνάριον (a denarius). τίνος (Of whom) ἔχει (has it) εἰκόνα (the image) καὶ (and) ἐπιγραφήν (inscription)?” Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπαν (they said), “Καίσαρος (Caesar’s).” ²⁵ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Τοίνυν (Therefore) ἀπόδοτε (give back) τὰ (the things) Καίσαρος (of Caesar) Καίσαρι (to Caesar), καὶ (and) τὰ (the things) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God).”

⁶⁹ ἀπὸ (From) τοῦ (-) νῦν (now on) δὲ (also) ἔσται (will be) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) καθήμενος (sitting) ἐκ (at) δεξιῶν (the right hand) τῆς (of the) δυνάμεως (power) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).” ⁷⁰ Εἶπαν (They said) δὲ (then) πάντες (all), “Σὺ (You) οὖν (then) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God)?” Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) πρὸς (to) αὐτοὺς (them) ἔφη (He was saying), “Ὑμεῖς (You) λέγετε (say) ὅτι (that) ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am).”

⁵ Οἱ (-) δὲ (But) ἐπίσχυον (they kept insisting), λέγοντες (saying) ὅτι (-), “Ἀνασείει (He stirs up) τὸν (the) λαὸν (people), διδάσκων (teaching) καθ’ (throughout) ὅλης (all) τῆς (-) Ἰουδαίας (of Judea), καὶ (and) ἀρξάμενος (He has begun) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (Galilee) ἕως (even to) ὧδε (here).”

¹⁴ εἶπεν (said) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Προσηνέγκατέ (You brought) μοι (to me) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man) τοῦτον (this), ὡς (as) ἀποστρέφοντα (misleading) τὸν (the) λαόν (people); καὶ (and) ἰδοὺ (behold), ἐγὼ (I) ἐνώπιον (before) ὑμῶν (you) ἀνακρίνας (having examined Him), οὐθὲν (nothing) εὗρον (found) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀνθρώπῳ (man) τούτῳ (this) αἴτιον (guilty) ὧν (of that) κατηγορεῖτε (accusation you are bringing) κατ’ (against) αὐτοῦ (Him).

³⁰ Ἀπεκρίθησαν (They answered) καὶ (and) εἶπαν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Εἰ (If) μὴ (not) ἦν (were) οὗτος (He) κακὸν (evil) ποιῶν (doing), οὐκ (not) ἄν (-) σοι (to you) παρεδώκαμεν (we would have delivered) αὐτόν (Him).”

³³ Εἰσῆλθεν (Entered) οὖν (therefore) πάλιν (again) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πραιτώριον (Praetorium) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), καὶ (and) ἐφώνησεν (he called) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Σὺ (You) εἶ (are) ὁ (the) Βασιλεὺς (King) τῶν (of the) Ἰουδαίων (Jews)?” ³⁴ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἀπὸ* (Of) σεαυτοῦ* (yourself) σὺ (you) τοῦτο (this) λέγεις (say), ἢ (or) ἄλλοι (others) εἶπόν (did say it) σοι (to you) περὶ (concerning) ἐμοῦ (Me)?” ³⁵ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), “Μήτι (Not) ἐγὼ (I) Ἰουδαῖός (a Jew) εἰμι (am)? τὸ (The) ἔθνος (nation) τὸ (-) σὸν (of You) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) ἀρχιερεῖς (chief priests) παρέδωκάν (delivered) σε (You) ἐμοί (to me). τί (What) ἐποίησας (have You done)?” ³⁶ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἡ (The) βασιλεία (kingdom) ἡ (-) ἐμὴ (My) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) τούτου (this); εἰ (if) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) τούτου (this) ἦν (were) ἡ (-) βασιλεία (kingdom) ἡ (-) ἐμή (My), οἱ (-) ὑπηρέται (attendants) ἄν (-) «οἱ (-) ἐμοὶ (My) ἠγωνίζοντο» (would fight) ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) παραδοθῶ (I might be betrayed) τοῖς (to the) Ἰουδαίοις (Jews). νῦν (Now) δὲ (however) ἡ (-) βασιλεία (kingdom) ἡ (-) ἐμὴ (My) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἐντεῦθεν (from here).” ³⁷ Εἶπεν (Said) οὖν (therefore) αὐτῷ (to Him) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate), “Οὐκοῦν (Then) βασιλεὺς (a king) εἶ (are) σύ (You)?” Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Σὺ (You) λέγεις (say) ὅτι (that) βασιλεύς (a king) εἰμι (I am). ἐγὼ (I) εἰς (for) τοῦτο (this) γεγέννημαι (have been born), καὶ (and) εἰς (for) τοῦτο (this) ἐλήλυθα (I have come) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), ἵνα (that) μαρτυρήσω (I may bear witness) τῇ (to the) ἀληθείᾳ (truth). πᾶς (Everyone) ὁ (-) ὢν (being) ἐκ (of) τῆς (the) ἀληθείας (truth) ἀκούει (hears) μου (of Me) τῆς (the) φωνῆς (voice).”

¹² Ἐκ (Out of) τούτου (this) ὁ (-) Πιλᾶτος (Pilate) ἐζήτει (was seeking) ἀπολῦσαι (to release) αὐτόν (Him); οἱ (-) δὲ (but) Ἰουδαῖοι (the Jews) ἐκραύγασαν (cried out), λέγοντες (saying), “Ἐὰν (If) τοῦτον (this man) ἀπολύσῃς (you release), οὐκ (not) εἶ (you are) φίλος (a friend) τοῦ (-) Καίσαρος (of Caesar). πᾶς (Everyone) ὁ (-) βασιλέα (a king) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ποιῶν (making), ἀντιλέγει (speaks against) τῷ (-) Καίσαρι (Caesar).”

²⁰ καὶ (and) προσαγαγόντες (having brought up) αὐτοὺς (them) τοῖς (to the) στρατηγοῖς (magistrates), εἶπαν (they said), “Οὗτοι (These) οἱ (-) ἄνθρωποι (men) ἐκταράσσουσιν (exceedingly trouble) ἡμῶν (of us) τὴν (the) πόλιν (city), Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) ὑπάρχοντες (being), ²¹ καὶ (and) καταγγέλλουσιν (preach) ἔθη (customs), ἃ (that) οὐκ (not) ἔξεστιν (it is lawful) ἡμῖν (for us) παραδέχεσθαι (to accept) οὐδὲ (nor) ποιεῖν (to practice), Ῥωμαίοις (Romans) οὖσιν (being).”

⁶ μὴ (Not) εὑρόντες (having found) δὲ (however) αὐτοὺς (them), ἔσυρον (they dragged) Ἰάσονα (Jason) καί (and) τινας (certain) ἀδελφοὺς (brothers) ἐπὶ (before) τοὺς (the) πολιτάρχας (city authorities), βοῶντες (crying out) ὅτι (-), “Οἱ (The ones) τὴν (the) οἰκουμένην (world) ἀναστατώσαντες (having upset), οὗτοι (these) καὶ (also) ἐνθάδε (here) πάρεισιν (are come), ⁷ οὓς (whom) ὑποδέδεκται (has received) Ἰάσων (Jason). καὶ (And) οὗτοι (these) πάντες (all), ἀπέναντι (contrary to) τῶν (the) δογμάτων (decrees) Καίσαρος (of Caesar) πράσσουσι* (do), βασιλέα (king) ἕτερον (another) λέγοντες (proclaiming) εἶναι (to be): Ἰησοῦν (Jesus).”

⁵ Εὑρόντες (Having found) γὰρ (for) τὸν (the) ἄνδρα (man) τοῦτον (this) λοιμὸν (a pest), καὶ (and) κινοῦντα (stirring) στάσεις (insurrection) πᾶσιν (among all) τοῖς (the) Ἰουδαίοις (Jews) τοῖς (-) κατὰ (in) τὴν (the) οἰκουμένην (world), πρωτοστάτην (a leader) τε (then) τῆς (of the) τῶν (of the) Ναζωραίων (Nazarenes) αἱρέσεως (sect),

¹³ οὐδὲ (Nor) παραστῆσαι (to prove) δύνανταί (are they able) σοι (to you), περὶ (concerning) ὧν (the things of which) νυνὶ (now) κατηγοροῦσίν (they accuse) μου (me).

¹⁶ συνείδησιν (a conscience) ἔχοντες (having) ἀγαθήν (good), ἵνα (so that) ἐν (in) ᾧ (this) καταλαλεῖσθε (they might speak against you), καταισχυνθῶσιν (they shall be ashamed) οἱ (those) ἐπηρεάζοντες (reviling) ὑμῶν (your) τὴν (-) ἀγαθὴν (good) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) ἀναστροφήν (manner of life). ¹⁷ κρεῖττον (It is better) γὰρ (for) ἀγαθοποιοῦντας (doing good) εἰ (if) θέλοι (wills it) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), πάσχειν (to suffer), ἢ (than) κακοποιοῦντας (doing evil), ¹⁸ ὅτι (because) καὶ (also) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἅπαξ (once) περὶ (for) ἁμαρτιῶν (sins) ἔπαθεν* (suffered), δίκαιος (the righteous) ὑπὲρ (for) ἀδίκων (the unrighteous), ἵνα (so that) ὑμᾶς (you) προσαγάγῃ (He might bring) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), θανατωθεὶς (having been put to death) μὲν (indeed) σαρκὶ (in the flesh), ζωοποιηθεὶς (having been made alive) δὲ (however) πνεύματι (in the spirit),
