¹² οἱ (Those) δὲ (now) παρὰ (along) τὴν (the) ὁδόν (road) εἰσιν (are) οἱ (those) ἀκούσαντες (having heard); εἶτα (then) ἔρχεται (comes) ὁ (the) διάβολος (devil) καὶ (and) αἴρει (takes away) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) καρδίας (heart) αὐτῶν (of them), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) πιστεύσαντες (having believed) σωθῶσιν (they should be saved).

⁵ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly), λέγω (I say) σοι (to you), ἐὰν (if) μή (not) τις (anyone) γεννηθῇ (be born) ἐξ (of) ὕδατος (water) καὶ (and) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit), οὐ (not) δύναται (he is able) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

¹⁵ ἵνα (so that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) πιστεύων (believing) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) ἔχῃ (may have) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal). ¹⁶ Οὕτως (Thus) γὰρ (for) ἠγάπησεν (loved) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), ὥστε (that) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son), τὸν (the) μονογενῆ (only begotten), ἔδωκεν (He gave), ἵνα (so that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) αὐτὸν (Him) μὴ (not) ἀπόληται (should perish), ἀλλ’ (but) ἔχῃ (should have) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal).

¹⁸ ὁ (The one) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (on) αὐτὸν (Him) οὐ (not) κρίνεται (is judged); ὁ (the one) ‹δὲ› (but) μὴ (not) πιστεύων (believing) ἤδη (already) κέκριται (has been judged), ὅτι (because) μὴ (not) πεπίστευκεν (he has believed) εἰς (in) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) τοῦ (of the) μονογενοῦς (only begotten) Υἱοῦ (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God). ¹⁹ Αὕτη (This) δέ (now) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) κρίσις (judgement), ὅτι (that) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light) ἐλήλυθεν (has come) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), καὶ (and) ἠγάπησαν (loved) οἱ (-) ἄνθρωποι (men) μᾶλλον (rather) τὸ (the) σκότος (darkness) ἢ (than) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light); ἦν (were) γὰρ (for) αὐτῶν (of them) πονηρὰ (evil) τὰ (the) ἔργα (deeds).

³⁶ ὁ (The one) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) ἔχει (has) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal); ὁ (the one) δὲ (however) ἀπειθῶν (not obeying) τῷ (the) Υἱῷ (Son), οὐκ (not) ὄψεται (will see) ζωήν (life), ἀλλ’ (but) ἡ (the) ὀργὴ (wrath) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) μένει (abides) ἐπ’ (on) αὐτόν (him).”

²⁴ Ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) ὁ (the one) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) μου (of Me) ἀκούων (hearing), καὶ (and) πιστεύων (believing) τῷ (the One) πέμψαντί (having sent) με (Me), ἔχει (he has) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal) καὶ (and) εἰς (into) κρίσιν (judgment) οὐκ (not) ἔρχεται (comes), ἀλλὰ (but) μεταβέβηκεν (has passed) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (-) θανάτου (death) εἰς (into) τὴν (-) ζωήν (life).

²⁹ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) ‹ὁ› (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Τοῦτό (This) ἐστιν (is) τὸ (the) ἔργον (work) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἵνα (that) πιστεύητε (you should believe) εἰς (in) ὃν (Him whom) ἀπέστειλεν (has sent) ἐκεῖνος (He).”

³⁵ Εἶπεν (Said) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ὁ (the) ἄρτος (bread) τῆς (-) ζωῆς (of life); ὁ (the one) ἐρχόμενος (coming) πρὸς (to) ἐμὲ (Me) οὐ (never) μὴ (not) πεινάσῃ (shall hunger), καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) ἐμὲ (Me) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) διψήσει (shall thirst) πώποτε (at any time).

⁴⁰ τοῦτο (This) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (of the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me), ἵνα (that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) θεωρῶν (beholding) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) καὶ (and) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) αὐτὸν (Him) ἔχῃ (should have) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal), καὶ (and) ἀναστήσω (will raise up) αὐτὸν (him) ἐγὼ (I) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐσχάτῃ (last) ἡμέρᾳ (day).”

³⁷ Ἐν (In) δὲ (now) τῇ (the) ἐσχάτῃ (last) ἡμέρᾳ (day), τῇ (the) μεγάλῃ (great day) τῆς (of the) ἑορτῆς (feast), εἱστήκει (stood) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) καὶ (and) ἔκραξεν (cried out), λέγων (saying), “Ἐάν (If) τις (anyone) διψᾷ (thirsts), ἐρχέσθω (let him come) πρός (to) με (Me) καὶ (and) πινέτω (drink). ³⁸ ὁ (The one) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) ἐμέ (Me), καθὼς (as) εἶπεν (has said) ἡ (the) γραφή (Scripture): ‘Ποταμοὶ (Rivers) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) κοιλίας (belly) αὐτοῦ (of him) ῥεύσουσιν (will flow) ὕδατος (of water) ζῶντος (living).’”

²⁴ εἶπον (I said) οὖν (therefore) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) ἀποθανεῖσθε (you will die) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἁμαρτίαις (sins) ὑμῶν (of you); ἐὰν (if) γὰρ (for) μὴ (not) πιστεύσητε (you believe) ὅτι (that) ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am He), ἀποθανεῖσθε (you will die) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἁμαρτίαις (sins) ὑμῶν (of you).”

²⁵ Εἶπεν (Said) αὐτῇ (to her) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ἡ (the) ἀνάστασις (resurrection) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ζωή (life); ὁ (the one) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) ἐμὲ (Me), κἂν (even if) ἀποθάνῃ (he should die), ζήσεται (he will live); ²⁶ καὶ (and) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ζῶν (living) καὶ (and) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) ἐμὲ (Me), οὐ (never) μὴ (not) ἀποθάνῃ (shall die), εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age). πιστεύεις (Believe you) τοῦτο (this)?”

⁴⁶ ἐγὼ (I) φῶς (a light) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) ἐλήλυθα (have come), ἵνα (so that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) ἐμὲ (Me), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σκοτίᾳ (darkness) μὴ (not) μείνῃ (should abide). ⁴⁷ Καὶ (And) ἐάν (if) τίς (anyone) μου (of Me) ἀκούσῃ (hears) τῶν (the) ῥημάτων (words) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) φυλάξῃ (keeps them), ἐγὼ (I) οὐ (not) κρίνω (do judge) αὐτόν (him), οὐ (not) γὰρ (for) ἦλθον (I came) ἵνα (that) κρίνω (I might judge) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), ἀλλ’ (but) ἵνα (that) σώσω (I might save) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world). ⁴⁸ ὁ (The one) ἀθετῶν (rejecting) ἐμὲ (Me) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) λαμβάνων (receiving) τὰ (the) ῥήματά (words) μου (of Me) ἔχει (has) τὸν (one) κρίνοντα (judging) αὐτόν (him): ὁ (The) λόγος (word) ὃν (which) ἐλάλησα (I spoke), ἐκεῖνος (that) κρινεῖ (will judge) αὐτὸν (him) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἐσχάτῃ (last) ἡμέρᾳ (day).

³¹ ταῦτα (these) δὲ (however) γέγραπται (have been written) ἵνα (that) πιστεύητε (you may believe) ὅτι (that) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Χριστὸς (Christ), ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), καὶ (and) ἵνα (that) πιστεύοντες (believing), ζωὴν (life) ἔχητε (you may have) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

³⁸ Πέτρος (Peter) δὲ (then) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Μετανοήσατε (Repent),” [φησίν] (he declared), “Καὶ (and) βαπτισθήτω (be baptized), ἕκαστος (every one) ὑμῶν (of you), ἐπὶ (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) εἰς (for the) ἄφεσιν (forgiveness) τῶν (of the) ἁμαρτιῶν (sins) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and) λήμψεσθε (you will receive) τὴν (the) δωρεὰν (gift) τοῦ (of the) Ἁγίου (Holy) Πνεύματος (Spirit).

⁴¹ οἱ (Those) μὲν (indeed) οὖν (therefore) ἀποδεξάμενοι (having received) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἐβαπτίσθησαν (were baptized); καὶ (and) προσετέθησαν (were added) ἐν (on) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) ἐκείνῃ (that), ψυχαὶ (souls) ὡσεὶ (about) τρισχίλιαι (three thousand).

³⁶ Ὡς (As) δὲ (then) ἐπορεύοντο (they were going) κατὰ (along) τὴν (the) ὁδόν (road), ἦλθον (they came) ἐπί (upon) τι (some) ὕδωρ (water), καί (and) φησιν (says) ὁ (the) εὐνοῦχος (eunuch), “Ἰδοὺ (Behold) ὕδωρ (water); τί (what) κωλύει (prevents) με (me) βαπτισθῆναι (to be baptized)?” ^{37 38} καὶ (And) ἐκέλευσεν (he commanded) στῆναι (to stop) τὸ (the) ἅρμα (chariot). καὶ (And) κατέβησαν (they went down) ἀμφότεροι (both) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) ὕδωρ (water), ὅ (-) τε (both) Φίλιππος (Philip) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) εὐνοῦχος (eunuch), καὶ (and) ἐβάπτισεν (he baptized) αὐτόν (him). ³⁹ Ὅτε (When) δὲ (now) ἀνέβησαν (they came up) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) ὕδατος (water), Πνεῦμα (the Spirit) Κυρίου (of the Lord) ἥρπασεν (carried away) τὸν (-) Φίλιππον (Philip), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) εἶδεν (saw) αὐτὸν (him) οὐκέτι (no longer) ὁ (the) εὐνοῦχος (eunuch); ἐπορεύετο (he went) γὰρ (for) τὴν (the) ὁδὸν (way) αὐτοῦ (of him), χαίρων (rejoicing).

⁴³ τούτῳ (To Him) πάντες (all) οἱ (the) προφῆται (prophets) μαρτυροῦσιν (bear witness) ἄφεσιν (that forgiveness) ἁμαρτιῶν (of sins) λαβεῖν (receives) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) ὀνόματος (name) αὐτοῦ (of Him) πάντα (everyone) τὸν (-) πιστεύοντα (believing) εἰς (in) αὐτόν (Him).”

³⁹ καὶ (And) ἀπὸ (from) πάντων (all things) ὧν (from which) οὐκ (not) ἠδυνήθητε (you were able) ἐν (in) νόμῳ (the law) Μωϋσέως (of Moses) δικαιωθῆναι (to be justified), ἐν (in) τούτῳ (Him) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) πιστεύων (believing) δικαιοῦται (is justified).

⁴⁶ Παρρησιασάμενοί (Having spoken boldly) τε (also), ὁ (-) Παῦλος (Paul) καὶ (and) ὁ (-) Βαρνάβας (Barnabas) εἶπαν (said), “Ὑμῖν (To you) ἦν (it was) ἀναγκαῖον (necessary) πρῶτον (first) λαληθῆναι (to be spoken) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God); ἐπειδὴ (but since) ἀπωθεῖσθε (you thrust away) αὐτὸν (it) καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἀξίους (worthy) κρίνετε (you judge) ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves) τῆς (-) αἰωνίου (of eternal) ζωῆς (life), ἰδοὺ (behold), στρεφόμεθα (we are turning) εἰς (to) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles).

³⁰ καὶ (And) προαγαγὼν (having brought) αὐτοὺς (them) ἔξω (out) ἔφη (he was saying), “Κύριοι (Sirs), τί (what) με (of me) δεῖ (is necessary) ποιεῖν (to do), ἵνα (that) σωθῶ (I may be saved)?” ³¹ Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπαν (they said), “Πίστευσον (Believe) ἐπὶ (on) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), καὶ (and) σωθήσῃ (you will be saved), σὺ (you) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) οἶκός (household) σου (of you).” ³² καὶ (And) ἐλάλησαν (they spoke) αὐτῷ (to him) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦ (of the) κυρίου* (Lord), σὺν (along with) πᾶσιν (all) τοῖς (those) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) οἰκίᾳ (house) αὐτοῦ (of him).

¹⁶ καὶ (And) νῦν (now) τί (why) μέλλεις (delay you)? ἀναστὰς (Having arisen), βάπτισαι (be baptized) καὶ (and) ἀπόλουσαι (wash away) τὰς (the) ἁμαρτίας (sins) σου (of you), ἐπικαλεσάμενος (calling on) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) αὐτοῦ (of Him).’

⁶ μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)! ἐπεὶ (Otherwise), πῶς (how) κρινεῖ (will judge) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world)?

²⁴ ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) δι’ (on account of) ἡμᾶς (us), οἷς (to whom) μέλλει (it is about) λογίζεσθαι (to be credited), τοῖς (to those) πιστεύουσιν (believing) ἐπὶ (on) τὸν (the One) ἐγείραντα (having raised) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead),

⁹ ὅτι (that) ἐὰν (if) ὁμολογήσῃς (you confess) ἐν (with) τῷ (the) στόματί (mouth) σου (of you), “Κύριον (The Lord is) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus),” καὶ (and) πιστεύσῃς (believe) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) σου (of you), ὅτι (that) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) αὐτὸν (Him) ἤγειρεν (raised) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead), σωθήσῃ (you will be saved). ¹⁰ καρδίᾳ (In the heart) γὰρ (for) πιστεύεται (is belief) εἰς (unto) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness); στόματι (in the mouth) δὲ (now) ὁμολογεῖται (is confession) εἰς (unto) σωτηρίαν (salvation). ¹¹ Λέγει (Says) γὰρ (for) ἡ (the) γραφή (Scripture), “Πᾶς (Everyone) ὁ (-) πιστεύων (believing) ἐπ’ (on) αὐτῷ (Him) οὐ (not) καταισχυνθήσεται (will be put to shame).” ¹² οὐ (Not) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (there is) διαστολὴ (difference) Ἰουδαίου (Jew) τε (between) καὶ (and) Ἕλληνος (Greek); ὁ (-) γὰρ (for) αὐτὸς (the same) Κύριος (Lord) πάντων (of all) πλουτῶν (is rich) εἰς (toward) πάντας (all) τοὺς (those) ἐπικαλουμένους (calling) αὐτόν (Him). ¹³ “Πᾶς (Whoever) γὰρ (for) ὃς (that) ἂν (-) ἐπικαλέσηται (shall call upon) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) Κυρίου (of the Lord) σωθήσεται (will be saved).” ¹⁴ Πῶς (How) οὖν (then) ἐπικαλέσωνται (shall they call) εἰς (on Him) ὃν (whom) οὐκ (not) ἐπίστευσαν (they believed)? πῶς (How) δὲ (now) πιστεύσωσιν (shall they believe on Him) οὗ (of whom) οὐκ (not) ἤκουσαν (they have heard)? πῶς (How) δὲ (now) ἀκούσωσιν (shall they hear) χωρὶς (apart from) κηρύσσοντος (preaching)?

⁸ ἐν (in) πυρὶ (a fire) φλογός (of flame), διδόντος (inflicting) ἐκδίκησιν (vengeance) τοῖς (on those) μὴ (not) εἰδόσιν (knowing) Θεὸν (God) καὶ (and) τοῖς (on those) μὴ (not) ὑπακούουσιν (obeying) τῷ (the) εὐαγγελίῳ (gospel) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus),

¹² ἵνα (in order that) κριθῶσιν (should be judged) πάντες (all) οἱ (those) μὴ (not) πιστεύσαντες (having believed) τῇ (the) ἀληθείᾳ (truth), ἀλλὰ (but) εὐδοκήσαντες (having delighted) τῇ (-) ἀδικίᾳ (in unrighteousness).

³⁸ ὁ (The one) δὲ (however) δίκαιός (righteous) μου (of Mine) ἐκ (by) πίστεως (faith) ζήσεται (will live); καὶ (and) ἐὰν (if) ὑποστείληται (he might shrink back), οὐκ (not) εὐδοκεῖ (takes pleasure) ἡ (the) ψυχή (soul) μου (of Me) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him).” ³⁹ Ἡμεῖς (We) δὲ (however) οὐκ (not) ἐσμὲν (are) ὑποστολῆς (of those drawing back) εἰς (to) ἀπώλειαν (destruction), ἀλλὰ (but) πίστεως (of faith) εἰς (to) περιποίησιν (the preserving) ψυχῆς (of the soul).

¹⁰ ὁ (The one) πιστεύων (believing) εἰς (in) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἔχει (has) τὴν (the) μαρτυρίαν (testimony) ἐν (in) αὑτῷ (himself). ὁ (The one) μὴ (not) πιστεύων (believing) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God), ψεύστην (a liar) πεποίηκεν (has made) αὐτόν (Him), ὅτι (because) οὐ (not) πεπίστευκεν (he has believed) εἰς (in) τὴν (the) μαρτυρίαν (testimony) ἣν (that) μεμαρτύρηκεν (has testified) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) περὶ (concerning) τοῦ (the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (Him). ¹¹ Καὶ (And) αὕτη (this) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) μαρτυρία (testimony), ὅτι (that) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal) ἔδωκεν (has given) «ὁ (-) Θεὸς» (God) ἡμῖν (to us), καὶ (and) αὕτη (this) ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Υἱῷ (Son) αὐτοῦ (His) ἐστιν (is). ¹² ὁ (The one) ἔχων (having) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) ἔχει (has) τὴν (-) ζωήν (life); ὁ (the one) μὴ (not) ἔχων (having) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), τὴν (-) ζωὴν (life) οὐκ (not) ἔχει (has). ¹³ Ταῦτα (These things) ἔγραψα (have I written) ὑμῖν (to you) ἵνα (so that) εἰδῆτε (you may know) ὅτι (that) ζωὴν (life) ἔχετε (you have) αἰώνιον (eternal), τοῖς (to those) πιστεύουσιν (believing) εἰς (in) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

¹⁵ καὶ (And) εἴ (if) τις (anyone) οὐχ (not) εὑρέθη (was found) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βίβλῳ (book) τῆς (-) ζωῆς (of life) γεγραμμένος (having been written), ἐβλήθη (he was cast) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) λίμνην (lake) τοῦ (-) πυρός (of fire).

⁸ Τοῖς (-) δὲ (But) δειλοῖς (to the cowardly) καὶ (and) ἀπίστοις (unbelieving) καὶ (and) ἐβδελυγμένοις (having become abominable) καὶ (and) φονεῦσιν (murderers) καὶ (and) πόρνοις (the sexually immoral) καὶ (and) φαρμάκοις (sorcerers) καὶ (and) εἰδωλολάτραις (idolaters) καὶ (and) πᾶσιν (all) τοῖς (-) ψευδέσιν (liars), τὸ (the) μέρος (portion) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐν (is in) τῇ (the) λίμνῃ (lake) τῇ (-) καιομένῃ (burning) πυρὶ (with fire) καὶ (and) θείῳ (brimstone), ὅ (which) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) θάνατος (death) ὁ (-) δεύτερος (second).”
