³⁸ ὡς (As) γὰρ (for) ἦσαν (they were) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) ἐκείναις (those) ταῖς (-) πρὸ (before) τοῦ (the) κατακλυσμοῦ (flood), τρώγοντες (eating) καὶ (and) πίνοντες (drinking), γαμοῦντες (marrying) καὶ (and) γαμίζοντες (giving in marriage), ἄχρι (until) ἧς (that) ἡμέρας (day) εἰσῆλθεν (entered) Νῶε (Noah) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) κιβωτόν (ark).

³⁰ ἐν (In) γὰρ (for) τῇ (the) ἀναστάσει (resurrection), οὔτε (neither) γαμοῦσιν (do they marry), οὔτε (nor) γαμίζονται (are given in marriage), ἀλλ’ (but) ὡς (like) ἄγγελοι (angels) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) οὐρανῷ (heaven) εἰσιν (they are).

¹⁹ καὶ (And) ἐρῶ (I will say) τῇ (to the) ψυχῇ (soul) μου (of me), “Ψυχή (Soul), ἔχεις (you have) πολλὰ (many) ἀγαθὰ (good things) κείμενα (laid up) εἰς (for) ἔτη (years) πολλά (many); ἀναπαύου (take your rest); φάγε (eat), πίε (drink), εὐφραίνου (be merry).”’

⁴⁵ Ἐὰν (If) δὲ (however) εἴπῃ (should say) ὁ (the) δοῦλος (servant) ἐκεῖνος (that) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) αὐτοῦ (of him), ‘Χρονίζει (Delays) ὁ (the) κύριός (master) μου (of Me) ἔρχεσθαι (to come),’ καὶ (and) ἄρξηται (should begin) τύπτειν (to beat) τοὺς (the) παῖδας (men-servants) καὶ (and) τὰς (the) παιδίσκας (maid-servants), ἐσθίειν (to eat) τε (also) καὶ (and) πίνειν (to drink) καὶ (and) μεθύσκεσθαι (to get drunk),

¹⁸ Καὶ (And) ἤρξαντο (began) ἀπὸ (with) μιᾶς (one voice) πάντες (all) παραιτεῖσθαι (to excuse themselves). ὁ (The) πρῶτος (first) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), ‘Ἀγρὸν (A field) ἠγόρασα (I have bought), καὶ (and) ἔχω (I have) ἀνάγκην (need) ἐξελθὼν (going out) ἰδεῖν (to see) αὐτόν (it); ἐρωτῶ (I beg of) σε (you), ἔχε (hold) με (me) παρῃτημένον (excused).’ ¹⁹ Καὶ (And) ἕτερος (another) εἶπεν (said), ‘Ζεύγη (Yoke) βοῶν (of oxen) ἠγόρασα (I have bought) πέντε (five), καὶ (and) πορεύομαι (I am going) δοκιμάσαι (to prove) αὐτά (them); ἐρωτῶ (I beg of) σε (you) ἔχε (hold) με (me) παρῃτημένον (excused).’ ²⁰ Καὶ (And) ἕτερος (another) εἶπεν (said), ‘Γυναῖκα (A wife) ἔγημα (I have married), καὶ (and) διὰ (because of) τοῦτο (this) οὐ (not) δύναμαι (I am able) ἐλθεῖν (to come).’

²⁶ Καὶ (And) καθὼς (as) ἐγένετο (it came to pass) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) Νῶε (of Noah), οὕτως (thus) ἔσται (will it be) καὶ (also) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son) τοῦ (of) ἀνθρώπου (man): ²⁷ ἤσθιον (They were eating), ἔπινον (they were drinking), ἐγάμουν (they were marrying), ἐγαμίζοντο (they were being given in marriage), ἄχρι (until) ἧς (that) ἡμέρας (day) εἰσῆλθεν (entered) Νῶε (Noah) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) κιβωτόν (ark), καὶ (and) ἦλθεν (came) ὁ (the) κατακλυσμὸς (flood) καὶ (and) ἀπώλεσεν (destroyed) πάντας (all). ²⁸ Ὁμοίως (Likewise), καθὼς (as) ἐγένετο (it came to pass) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) Λώτ (of Lot), ἤσθιον (they were eating), ἔπινον (they were drinking), ἠγόραζον (they were buying), ἐπώλουν (they were selling), ἐφύτευον (they were planting), ᾠκοδόμουν (they were building);

³⁴ Προσέχετε (Take heed) δὲ (now) ἑαυτοῖς (to yourselves), μή‿ (lest) ποτε (ever) βαρηθῶσιν (be burdened) ὑμῶν (of you) αἱ (the) καρδίαι (hearts) ἐν (with) κραιπάλῃ (dissipation) καὶ (and) μέθῃ (drunkenness) καὶ (and) μερίμναις (cares) βιωτικαῖς (of life) — καὶ (and) ἐπιστῇ (would come) ἐφ’ (upon) ὑμᾶς (you) αἰφνίδιος (suddenly) ἡ (the) ἡμέρα (day) ἐκείνη (that) ὡς (as) παγίς (a snare).

¹³ ὡς (As) ἐν (in) ἡμέρᾳ (daytime), εὐσχημόνως (properly) περιπατήσωμεν (we should walk), μὴ (not) κώμοις (in reveling) καὶ (and) μέθαις (drinking), μὴ (not) κοίταις (in sexual immorality) καὶ (and) ἀσελγείαις (sensuality), μὴ (not) ἔριδι (in dissension) καὶ (and) ζήλῳ (jealousy). ¹⁴ ἀλλὰ (But) ἐνδύσασθε (put on) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) Χριστόν (Christ), καὶ (and) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh) πρόνοιαν (provision) μὴ (not) ποιεῖσθε (make) εἰς (for) ἐπιθυμίας (desires).

²⁹ Τοῦτο (This) δέ (now) φημι (I say), ἀδελφοί (brothers): ὁ (The) καιρὸς (season) συνεσταλμένος (shortened) ἐστίν (is). τὸ (-) λοιπὸν (From now on) ἵνα (that) καὶ (both) οἱ (those) ἔχοντες (having) γυναῖκας (wives), ὡς (as) μὴ (none) ἔχοντες (having) ὦσιν (should be); ³⁰ καὶ (and) οἱ (those) κλαίοντες (weeping), ὡς (as) μὴ (not) κλαίοντες (weeping); καὶ (and) οἱ (those) χαίροντες (rejoicing), ὡς (as) μὴ (not) χαίροντες (rejoicing); καὶ (and) οἱ (those) ἀγοράζοντες (buying), ὡς (as) μὴ (not) κατέχοντες (possessing); ³¹ καὶ (and) οἱ (those) χρώμενοι (using) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), ὡς (as) μὴ (not) καταχρώμενοι (using it as their own). παράγει (Is passing away) γὰρ (for) τὸ (the) σχῆμα (present form) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world) τούτου (this).
