¹ Πᾶσα (Every) ψυχὴ (soul) ἐξουσίαις (to the authorities) ὑπερεχούσαις (being above him) ὑποτασσέσθω (let be subject). οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ἔστιν (there is) ἐξουσία (authority), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὑπὸ (by) Θεοῦ (God); αἱ (those) δὲ (however) οὖσαι (existing), ὑπὸ (by) Θεοῦ (God) τεταγμέναι (having been instituted) εἰσίν (are). ² ὥστε (Therefore) ὁ (the one) ἀντιτασσόμενος (resisting) τῇ (the) ἐξουσίᾳ (authority), τῇ (the) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) διαταγῇ (ordinance) ἀνθέστηκεν (has resisted); οἱ (those) δὲ (now) ἀνθεστηκότες (having resisted) ἑαυτοῖς (upon themselves) κρίμα (judgment) λήμψονται (will bring). ³ οἱ (The) γὰρ (for) ἄρχοντες (rulers) οὐκ (not) εἰσὶν (are) φόβος (a terror) τῷ (-) ἀγαθῷ (to good) ἔργῳ (works), ἀλλὰ (but) τῷ (-) κακῷ (to evil). θέλεις (Do you desire) δὲ (now) μὴ (not) φοβεῖσθαι (to fear) τὴν (the) ἐξουσίαν (authority)? τὸ (The) ἀγαθὸν (good) ποίει (do), καὶ (and) ἕξεις (you will have) ἔπαινον (praise) ἐξ (from) αὐτῆς (him). ⁴ Θεοῦ (Of God) γὰρ (for) διάκονός (servant) ἐστιν (he is) σοὶ (to you) εἰς (for) τὸ (-) ἀγαθόν (good). ἐὰν (If) δὲ (however) τὸ (-) κακὸν (evil) ποιῇς (you do), φοβοῦ (be afraid), οὐ (not) γὰρ (for) εἰκῇ (in vain) τὴν (the) μάχαιραν (sword) φορεῖ (he bears); Θεοῦ (of God) γὰρ (for) διάκονός (a servant) ἐστιν (He is), ἔκδικος (an avenger) εἰς (for) ὀργὴν (wrath) τῷ (to the one) τὸ (-) κακὸν (evil) πράσσοντι (doing). ⁵ Διὸ (Therefore) ἀνάγκη (necessary it is) ὑποτάσσεσθαι (to be subject), οὐ (not) μόνον (only) διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) ὀργὴν (wrath), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) συνείδησιν (conscience). ⁶ διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this) γὰρ (for), καὶ (also) φόρους (taxes) τελεῖτε (pay you); λειτουργοὶ (servants) γὰρ (for) Θεοῦ (of God) εἰσιν (they are), εἰς (upon) αὐτὸ (this very) τοῦτο (thing) προσκαρτεροῦντες (attending continually). ⁷ ἀπόδοτε (Render) πᾶσιν (to all) τὰς (their) ὀφειλάς (dues), τῷ (to whom) τὸν (the) φόρον (tax), τὸν (the) φόρον (tax); τῷ (to whom) τὸ (the) τέλος (revenue), τὸ (the) τέλος (revenue); τῷ (to whom) τὸν (the) φόβον (respect), τὸν (the) φόβον (respect); τῷ (to whom) τὴν (the) τιμὴν (honor), τὴν (the) τιμήν (honor). ⁸ Μηδενὶ (To no one) μηδὲν (nothing) ὀφείλετε (owe), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) τὸ (-) ἀλλήλους (one another) ἀγαπᾶν (to love); ὁ (the one) γὰρ (for) ἀγαπῶν (loving) τὸν (the) ἕτερον (other), νόμον (the Law) πεπλήρωκεν (has fulfilled). ⁹ τὸ (-) γάρ (For), “Οὐ (Not) μοιχεύσεις (you shall commit adultery),” “Οὐ (Not) φονεύσεις (you shall murder),” “Οὐ (Not) κλέψεις (you shall steal),” “Οὐκ (Not) ἐπιθυμήσεις (you shall covet),” καὶ (and) εἴ (if) τις (any) ἑτέρα (other) ἐντολή (commandment), ἐν (in) τῷ (the) λόγῳ (word) τούτῳ (this) ἀνακεφαλαιοῦται (it is summed up), ἐν (in) τῷ (the saying): “Ἀγαπήσεις (You shall love) τὸν (the) πλησίον (neighbor) σου (of you) ὡς (as) σεαυτόν (yourself).” ¹⁰ ἡ (-) ἀγάπη (Love) τῷ (to the) πλησίον (neighbor) κακὸν (evil) οὐκ (not) ἐργάζεται (does do); πλήρωμα (the fulfillment) οὖν (therefore) νόμου (of the law) ἡ (-) ἀγάπη (love is). ¹¹ Καὶ (And) τοῦτο (this), εἰδότες (knowing) τὸν (the) καιρόν (time), ὅτι (that it is the) ὥρα (hour) ἤδη (already) ὑμᾶς (for you) ἐξ (out of) ὕπνου (sleep) ἐγερθῆναι (to awaken); νῦν (now) γὰρ (for) ἐγγύτερον (nearer) ἡμῶν (is of us) ἡ (the) σωτηρία (salvation) ἢ (than) ὅτε (when first) ἐπιστεύσαμεν (we believed). ¹² ἡ (The) νὺξ (night) προέκοψεν (is nearly over), ἡ (-) δὲ (and) ἡμέρα (the day) ἤγγικεν (has drawn near). ἀποθώμεθα (We should cast off) οὖν (therefore) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) τοῦ (-) σκότους (of darkness); ἐνδυσώμεθα (we should put on) δὲ (now) τὰ (the) ὅπλα (armor) τοῦ (-) φωτός (of light). ¹³ ὡς (As) ἐν (in) ἡμέρᾳ (daytime), εὐσχημόνως (properly) περιπατήσωμεν (we should walk), μὴ (not) κώμοις (in reveling) καὶ (and) μέθαις (drinking), μὴ (not) κοίταις (in sexual immorality) καὶ (and) ἀσελγείαις (sensuality), μὴ (not) ἔριδι (in dissension) καὶ (and) ζήλῳ (jealousy). ¹⁴ ἀλλὰ (But) ἐνδύσασθε (put on) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) Χριστόν (Christ), καὶ (and) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh) πρόνοιαν (provision) μὴ (not) ποιεῖσθε (make) εἰς (for) ἐπιθυμίας (desires).

¹³ Καὶ (And) μὴ (not) εἰσενέγκῃς (lead) ἡμᾶς (us) εἰς (into) πειρασμόν (temptation), Ἀλλὰ (but) ῥῦσαι (deliver) ἡμᾶς (us) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (-) πονηροῦ (evil).’

¹ Ὑπομίμνῃσκε (Remind) αὐτοὺς (them) ἀρχαῖς (to rulers), ἐξουσίαις (to authorities), ὑποτάσσεσθαι (to be subject), πειθαρχεῖν (to be obedient); πρὸς (for) πᾶν (every) ἔργον (work) ἀγαθὸν (good), ἑτοίμους (ready) εἶναι (to be);

¹³ Ὑποτάγητε (Be in subjection) πάσῃ (to every) ἀνθρωπίνῃ (human) κτίσει (institution) διὰ (for the sake of) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord), εἴτε (whether) βασιλεῖ (to the king) ὡς (as) ὑπερέχοντι (being supreme), ¹⁴ εἴτε (or) ἡγεμόσιν (to governors), ὡς (as) δι’ (by) αὐτοῦ (him) πεμπομένοις (being sent) εἰς (for) ἐκδίκησιν (vengeance) κακοποιῶν (to evildoers), ἔπαινον (praise) δὲ (then) ἀγαθοποιῶν (to well-doers), ¹⁵ ὅτι (because) οὕτως (this) ἐστὶν (is) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἀγαθοποιοῦντας (doing good), φιμοῦν (to put to silence) τὴν (the) τῶν (-) ἀφρόνων (of foolish) ἀνθρώπων (men) ἀγνωσίαν (ignorance), ¹⁶ ὡς (as) ἐλεύθεροι (free), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ὡς (as) ἐπικάλυμμα (a cover-up) ἔχοντες (having) τῆς (for) κακίας (evil) τὴν (the) ἐλευθερίαν (freedom), ἀλλ’ (but) ὡς (as) Θεοῦ (of God) δοῦλοι (servants). ¹⁷ Πάντας (Everyone) τιμήσατε (honor): τὴν (The) ἀδελφότητα (brotherhood) ἀγαπᾶτε (love), τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) φοβεῖσθε (fear), τὸν (the) βασιλέα (king) τιμᾶτε (honor).

¹⁰ μάλιστα (especially) δὲ (then) τοὺς (those) ὀπίσω (after) σαρκὸς (the flesh) ἐν (in) ἐπιθυμίᾳ (the passion) μιασμοῦ (of defilement) πορευομένους (walking) καὶ (and) κυριότητος (authority) καταφρονοῦντας (despising). τολμηταὶ (Bold), αὐθάδεις (self-willed), δόξας (glorious ones) οὐ (not) τρέμουσιν (they tremble) βλασφημοῦντες (blaspheming), ¹¹ ὅπου (whereas) ἄγγελοι (angels), ἰσχύϊ (in strength) καὶ (and) δυνάμει (power) μείζονες (greater) ὄντες (being), οὐ (not) φέρουσιν (do bring) κατ’ (against) αὐτῶν (them) παρὰ (before) Κυρίῳ (the Lord) βλάσφημον (a reviling) κρίσιν (judgment).

⁸ Ὁμοίως (Likewise) μέντοι (yet) καὶ (also) οὗτοι (these) ἐνυπνιαζόμενοι (dreaming ones), σάρκα (the flesh) μὲν (indeed) μιαίνουσιν (defile), κυριότητα (authority) δὲ (then) ἀθετοῦσιν (set aside), δόξας (glorious ones) δὲ (and) βλασφημοῦσιν (blaspheme).

⁵ καὶ (and) ἀπὸ (from) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), ὁ (the) μάρτυς (witness) ὁ (-) πιστός (faithful), ὁ (the) πρωτότοκος (firstborn) τῶν (of the) νεκρῶν (dead) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) ἄρχων (ruler) τῶν (of the) βασιλέων (kings) τῆς (of the) γῆς (earth). Τῷ (To the One) ἀγαπῶντι (loving) ἡμᾶς (us) καὶ (and) λύσαντι (releasing) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐκ (from) τῶν (the) ἁμαρτιῶν (sins) ἡμῶν (of us) ἐν (through) τῷ (the) αἵματι (blood) αὐτοῦ (of Him) —

¹⁴ Οὗτοι (These) μετὰ (with) τοῦ (the) Ἀρνίου (Lamb) πολεμήσουσιν (war will make), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) Ἀρνίον (Lamb) νικήσει (will overcome) αὐτούς (them), ὅτι (because) Κύριος (Lord) κυρίων (of lords) ἐστὶν (He is), καὶ (and) Βασιλεὺς (King) βασιλέων (of kings); καὶ (and) οἱ (those) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him) κλητοὶ (are called) καὶ (and) ἐκλεκτοὶ (chosen) καὶ (and) πιστοί (faithful).”

¹⁶ καὶ (And) ἔχει (He has) ἐπὶ (upon) τὸ (the) ἱμάτιον (robe) καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (upon) τὸν (the) μηρὸν (thigh) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ὄνομα (a name) γεγραμμένον (having been written): ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ (King) ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΝ (of Kings) ΚΑΙ (and) ΚΥΡΙΟΣ (Lord) ΚΥΡΙΩΝ (of Lords).

¹³ Οὐαὶ (Woe) δὲ (however) ὑμῖν (to you), γραμματεῖς (scribes) καὶ (and) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees), ὑποκριταί (hypocrites)! ὅτι (For) κλείετε (you shut up) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (men); ὑμεῖς (You) γὰρ (for) οὐκ (neither) εἰσέρχεσθε (enter), οὐδὲ (nor even) τοὺς (those who) εἰσερχομένους (are entering) ἀφίετε (do you allow) εἰσελθεῖν (to go in).

⁴⁰ οἱ (those) κατεσθίοντες (devouring) τὰς (the) οἰκίας (houses) τῶν (of the) χηρῶν (widows), καὶ (and) προφάσει (as a pretext), μακρὰ (at great length) προσευχόμενοι (praying). οὗτοι (These) λήμψονται (will receive) περισσότερον (greater) κρίμα (judgment).”

⁴⁷ οἳ (who) κατεσθίουσιν (devour) τὰς (the) οἰκίας (houses) τῶν (of) χηρῶν (widows), καὶ (and) προφάσει (as a pretext) μακρὰ (at great length) προσεύχονται (pray). οὗτοι (These) λήμψονται (will receive) περισσότερον (more abundant) κρίμα (condemnation).”

⁵ Διὸ (Therefore) ἀνάγκη (necessary it is) ὑποτάσσεσθαι (to be subject), οὐ (not) μόνον (only) διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) ὀργὴν (wrath), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) συνείδησιν (conscience).

¹ Μὴ (Not) πολλοὶ (many of you) διδάσκαλοι (teachers) γίνεσθε (let be), ἀδελφοί (brothers) μου (of mine), εἰδότες (knowing) ὅτι (that) μεῖζον (greater) κρίμα (judgment) λημψόμεθα (we will receive).

¹³ Καὶ (And) τίς (who is) ὁ (he who) κακώσων (will harm) ὑμᾶς (you), ἐὰν (if) τοῦ (for that which is) ἀγαθοῦ (good), ζηλωταὶ (zealous) γένησθε (you should be)? ¹⁴ Ἀλλ’ (But) εἰ (if) καὶ (even) πάσχοιτε (you should suffer) διὰ (because of) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness), μακάριοι (you are blessed). “Τὸν (-) δὲ (And) φόβον (the threats) αὐτῶν (of them) μὴ (not) φοβηθῆτε (you should be afraid of), μηδὲ (neither) ταραχθῆτε (should you be troubled).”

¹⁹ μὴ (never) ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves) ἐκδικοῦντες (avenging), ἀγαπητοί (beloved); ἀλλὰ (instead) δότε (give) τόπον (place) τῇ (-) ὀργῇ (to wrath); γέγραπται (it has been written) γάρ (for): “Ἐμοὶ (Mine is) ἐκδίκησις (vengeance), ἐγὼ (I) ἀνταποδώσω (will repay), λέγει (says the) Κύριος (Lord).”

⁶ διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this) γὰρ (for), καὶ (also) φόρους (taxes) τελεῖτε (pay you); λειτουργοὶ (servants) γὰρ (for) Θεοῦ (of God) εἰσιν (they are), εἰς (upon) αὐτὸ (this very) τοῦτο (thing) προσκαρτεροῦντες (attending continually).

⁶ τὸ (-) μὴ (not) ὑπερβαίνειν (to go beyond) καὶ (and) πλεονεκτεῖν (to overreach) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) πράγματι (matter), τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), διότι (because) ἔκδικος (avenging is) Κύριος (the Lord) περὶ (concerning) πάντων (all) τούτων (these things), καθὼς (just as) καὶ (also) προείπαμεν (we told before) ὑμῖν (you), καὶ (and) διεμαρτυράμεθα (thoroughly warned).

¹⁶ ἐν (In) τούτῳ (this) καὶ (also) αὐτὸς (I myself) ἀσκῶ (strive), ἀπρόσκοπον (without offense) συνείδησιν (a conscience) ἔχειν (to have) πρὸς (toward) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) καὶ (and) τοὺς (-) ἀνθρώπους (men), διὰ (through) παντός (everything).

¹⁸ Προσεύχεσθε (Pray) περὶ (for) ἡμῶν (us); πειθόμεθα (we are persuaded) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) καλὴν (a good) συνείδησιν (conscience) ἔχομεν (we have), ἐν (in) πᾶσιν (all things) καλῶς (well) θέλοντες (desiring) ἀναστρέφεσθαι (to conduct ourselves).

¹⁹ τοῦτο (This) γὰρ (for) χάρις (is acceptable), εἰ (if) διὰ (for sake of) συνείδησιν (conscience) Θεοῦ (toward God), ὑποφέρει (endures) τις (anyone) λύπας (griefs), πάσχων (suffering) ἀδίκως (unjustly).

¹⁶ συνείδησιν (a conscience) ἔχοντες (having) ἀγαθήν (good), ἵνα (so that) ἐν (in) ᾧ (this) καταλαλεῖσθε (they might speak against you), καταισχυνθῶσιν (they shall be ashamed) οἱ (those) ἐπηρεάζοντες (reviling) ὑμῶν (your) τὴν (-) ἀγαθὴν (good) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) ἀναστροφήν (manner of life).

²⁴ Ἐλθόντων (Having come) δὲ (now) αὐτῶν (they) εἰς (to) Καφαρναοὺμ (Capernaum), προσῆλθον (came) οἱ (those) τὰ (the) δίδραχμα (didrachmas) λαμβάνοντες (collecting) τῷ (-) Πέτρῳ (to Peter) καὶ (and) εἶπαν (said), “Ὁ (The) διδάσκαλος (Teacher) ὑμῶν (of you) οὐ (not) τελεῖ (does he pay) ‹τὰ› (the) δίδραχμα (didrachmas)?” ²⁵ Λέγει (He says), “Ναί (Yes).” Καὶ (And) ἐλθόντα (he having entered) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) οἰκίαν (house), προέφθασεν (anticipated) αὐτὸν (him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), λέγων (saying), “Τί (What) σοι (you) δοκεῖ (do think), Σίμων (Simon)? οἱ (The) βασιλεῖς (kings) τῆς (of the) γῆς (earth), ἀπὸ (from) τίνων (whom) λαμβάνουσιν (do they receive) τέλη (custom) ἢ (or) κῆνσον (tribute)? ἀπὸ (From) τῶν (the) υἱῶν (sons) αὐτῶν (of them), ἢ (or) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (-) ἀλλοτρίων (strangers)?” ²⁶ Εἰπόντος (He having said) δέ (now), “Ἀπὸ (From) τῶν (the) ἀλλοτρίων (strangers),” ἔφη (said) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἄρα¦Γε (Then) ἐλεύθεροί (free) εἰσιν (are) οἱ (the) υἱοί (sons). ²⁷ ἵνα (That) δὲ (however) μὴ (not) σκανδαλίσωμεν (we might offend) αὐτούς (them), πορευθεὶς (having gone) εἰς (to) θάλασσαν (sea), βάλε (cast) ἄγκιστρον (a hook), καὶ (and) τὸν (the) ἀναβάντα (having come up) πρῶτον (first) ἰχθὺν (fish) ἆρον (take), καὶ (and) ἀνοίξας (having opened) τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth) αὐτοῦ (of it), εὑρήσεις (you will find) στατῆρα (a four-drachma coin). ἐκεῖνον (That) λαβὼν (having taken), δὸς (give) αὐτοῖς (to them) ἀντὶ (for) ἐμοῦ (Me) καὶ (and) σοῦ (yourself).”

¹⁷ εἰπὸν (Tell) οὖν (therefore) ἡμῖν (us) τί (what) σοι (You) δοκεῖ (think)? ἔξεστιν (Is it lawful) δοῦναι (to give) κῆνσον (tribute) Καίσαρι (to Caesar), ἢ (or) οὔ (not)?” ¹⁸ Γνοὺς (Having known) δὲ (however) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) τὴν (the) πονηρίαν (malice) αὐτῶν (of them), εἶπεν (He said), “Τί (Why) με (Me) πειράζετε (do you test), ὑποκριταί (hypocrites)? ¹⁹ ἐπιδείξατέ (Show) μοι (Me) τὸ (the) νόμισμα (coin) τοῦ (of the) κήνσου (tribute).” Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) προσήνεγκαν (they presented) αὐτῷ (to Him) δηνάριον (a denarius). ²⁰ Καὶ (And) λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Τίνος (Whose is) ἡ (the) εἰκὼν (likeness) αὕτη (this)? καὶ (And) ἡ (whose) ἐπιγραφή (inscription)?” ²¹ Λέγουσιν (They say) ‹αὐτῷ› (to Him) “Καίσαρος (Caesar’s).” Τότε (Then) λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ἀπόδοτε (Give back) οὖν (therefore) τὰ (the things) Καίσαρος (of Caesar) Καίσαρι (to Caesar), καὶ (and) τὰ (the things) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God).”

¹⁴ καὶ (And) ἐλθόντες (having come), λέγουσιν (they say) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Διδάσκαλε (Teacher), οἴδαμεν (we know) ὅτι (that) ἀληθὴς (true) εἶ (You are), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) μέλει (there is care) σοι (to You) περὶ (about) οὐδενός (no one); οὐ (not) γὰρ (for) βλέπεις (You look) εἰς (on the) πρόσωπον (appearance) ἀνθρώπων (of men), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐπ’ (on the basis of) ἀληθείας (the truth) τὴν (the) ὁδὸν (way) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) διδάσκεις (teach). ἔξεστιν (Is it lawful) δοῦναι (to give) κῆνσον (tribute) Καίσαρι (to Caesar) ἢ (or) οὔ (not)? δῶμεν (Should we pay) ἢ (or) μὴ (not) δῶμεν (pay)?” ¹⁵ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἰδὼς (knowing) αὐτῶν (of them) τὴν (the) ὑπόκρισιν (hypocrisy), εἶπεν (He said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Τί (Why) με (Me) πειράζετε (do you test)? φέρετέ (Bring) μοι (Me) δηνάριον (a denarius), ἵνα (that) ἴδω (I might see it).” ¹⁶ οἱ (-) δὲ (And) ἤνεγκαν (they brought it). καὶ (And) λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Τίνος (Whose is) ἡ (the) εἰκὼν (likeness) αὕτη (this), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἐπιγραφή (inscription)?” Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπαν (they said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Καίσαρος (Caesar’s).” ¹⁷ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Τὰ (The things) Καίσαρος (of Caesar), ἀπόδοτε (give back) Καίσαρι (to Caesar), καὶ (and) τὰ (the things) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God).” Καὶ (And) ἐξεθαύμαζον (they were amazed) ἐπ’ (at) αὐτῷ (Him).

²¹ καὶ (And) ἐπηρώτησαν (they questioned) αὐτὸν (Him), λέγοντες (saying), “Διδάσκαλε (Teacher), οἴδαμεν (we know) ὅτι (that) ὀρθῶς (rightly) λέγεις (You speak) καὶ (and) διδάσκεις (teach), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) λαμβάνεις (receive) πρόσωπον (any person), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐπ’ (on the basis of) ἀληθείας (truth) τὴν (the) ὁδὸν (way) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) διδάσκεις (teach). ²² ἔξεστιν (Is it lawful) ἡμᾶς (for us) Καίσαρι (to Caesar) φόρον (tribute) δοῦναι (to give), ἢ (or) οὔ (not)?” ²³ Κατανοήσας (Having perceived) δὲ (however) αὐτῶν (of them) τὴν (the) πανουργίαν (craftiness), εἶπεν (He said) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), ²⁴ “Δείξατέ (Show) μοι (Me) δηνάριον (a denarius). τίνος (Of whom) ἔχει (has it) εἰκόνα (the image) καὶ (and) ἐπιγραφήν (inscription)?” Οἱ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπαν (they said), “Καίσαρος (Caesar’s).” ²⁵ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Τοίνυν (Therefore) ἀπόδοτε (give back) τὰ (the things) Καίσαρος (of Caesar) Καίσαρι (to Caesar), καὶ (and) τὰ (the things) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God).” ²⁶ Καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) ἴσχυσαν (they were able) ἐπιλαβέσθαι (to catch Him in) αὐτοῦ (His) ῥήματος (word) ἐναντίον (before) τοῦ (the) λαοῦ (people); καὶ (and) θαυμάσαντες (having marveled) ἐπὶ (at) τῇ (the) ἀποκρίσει (answer) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἐσίγησαν (they became silent).

² ἤρξαντο (They began) δὲ (then) κατηγορεῖν (to accuse) αὐτοῦ (Him), λέγοντες (saying), “Τοῦτον (This man) εὕραμεν (we found) διαστρέφοντα (misleading) τὸ (the) ἔθνος (nation) ἡμῶν (of us) καὶ (and) κωλύοντα (forbidding) φόρους (tribute) Καίσαρι (to Caesar) διδόναι (to be given), καὶ (and) λέγοντα (declaring) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) Χριστὸν (Christ), βασιλέα (a king), εἶναι (to be).”

⁸ εἴτε (or) ὁ (-) παρακαλῶν (exhorting), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) παρακλήσει (exhortation); ὁ (-) μεταδιδοὺς (giving), ἐν (in) ἁπλότητι (generosity); ὁ (-) προϊστάμενος (leading), ἐν (with) σπουδῇ (diligence); ὁ (-) ἐλεῶν (showing mercy), ἐν (with) ἱλαρότητι (cheerfulness).

¹⁷ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Τὰ (The things) Καίσαρος (of Caesar), ἀπόδοτε (give back) Καίσαρι (to Caesar), καὶ (and) τὰ (the things) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God).” Καὶ (And) ἐξεθαύμαζον (they were amazed) ἐπ’ (at) αὐτῷ (Him).

³³ πλὴν (However) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) οἱ (-) καθ’ (according to) ἕνα (individual), ἕκαστος (each) τὴν (the) ἑαυτοῦ (of himself) γυναῖκα (wife), οὕτως (so) ἀγαπάτω (let love) ὡς (as) ἑαυτόν (himself); ἡ (-) δὲ (and) γυνὴ (the wife) ἵνα (that) φοβῆται (she may respect) τὸν (the) ἄνδρα (husband).

² “Τίμα (Honor) τὸν (the) πατέρα (Father) σου (of you) καὶ (and) τὴν (-) μητέρα (mother),” ἥτις (which) ἐστὶν (is) ἐντολὴ (the commandment) πρώτη (first) ἐν (with) ἐπαγγελίᾳ (a promise), ³ “Ἵνα (that) εὖ (well) σοι (with you) γένηται (it may be), καὶ (and) ἔσῃ (you will be) μακροχρόνιος (long-lived) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth).”

⁵ Οἱ (-) δοῦλοι (Slaves), ὑπακούετε (obey) τοῖς (the) κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (flesh) κυρίοις (masters) μετὰ (with) φόβου (fear) καὶ (and) τρόμου (trembling), ἐν (in) ἁπλότητι (sincerity) τῆς (of the) καρδίας (heart) ὑμῶν (of you), ὡς (as) τῷ (to) Χριστῷ (Christ),

¹³ ἅμα (At the same time) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) ἀργαὶ (to be idle) μανθάνουσιν (they learn), περιερχόμεναι (going about) τὰς (-) οἰκίας (house to house); οὐ (not) μόνον (only) δὲ (then) ἀργαὶ (idle), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) φλύαροι (gossips) καὶ (and) περίεργοι (busybodies), λαλοῦσαι (speaking) τὰ (things) μὴ (not) δέοντα (being proper).

¹⁷ Οἱ (The) καλῶς (well) προεστῶτες (ruling) πρεσβύτεροι (elders), διπλῆς (of double) τιμῆς (honor) ἀξιούσθωσαν (let be counted worthy), μάλιστα (especially) οἱ (those) κοπιῶντες (straining) ἐν (in) λόγῳ (the word) καὶ (and) διδασκαλίᾳ (the teaching).

¹ Ὅσοι (As many as) εἰσὶν (are) ὑπὸ (under) ζυγὸν (a yoke) δοῦλοι (as slaves), τοὺς (the) ἰδίους (own) δεσπότας (masters) πάσης (of all) τιμῆς (honor) ἀξίους (worthy) ἡγείσθωσαν (let them esteem), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) διδασκαλία (teaching) βλασφημῆται (should be blasphemed).

¹⁷ Πάντας (Everyone) τιμήσατε (honor): τὴν (The) ἀδελφότητα (brotherhood) ἀγαπᾶτε (love), τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) φοβεῖσθε (fear), τὸν (the) βασιλέα (king) τιμᾶτε (honor). ¹⁸ Οἱ (-) οἰκέται (Servants), ὑποτασσόμενοι (be subject) ἐν (with) παντὶ (all) φόβῳ (fear) τοῖς (to) δεσπόταις (masters), οὐ (not) μόνον (only) τοῖς (to the) ἀγαθοῖς (good) καὶ (and) ἐπιεικέσιν (gentle), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) τοῖς (to the) σκολιοῖς (unreasonable).

⁷ Οἱ (-) ἄνδρες (Husbands) ὁμοίως (likewise), συνοικοῦντες (dwelling with them) κατὰ (according to) γνῶσιν (knowledge), ὡς (as) ἀσθενεστέρῳ (with a weaker) σκεύει (vessel) τῷ (with the) γυναικείῳ (female), ἀπονέμοντες (rendering) τιμήν (honor), ὡς (as) καὶ (also) συνκληρονόμοις (joint-heirs) χάριτος (of the grace) ζωῆς (of life), εἰς (so as for) τὸ (-) μὴ (not) ἐνκόπτεσθαι (to be hindered) τὰς (the) προσευχὰς (prayers) ὑμῶν (of you).

³⁹ δευτέρα (The second) ‹δὲ› (also) ὁμοία (is like) αὐτῇ (it): ‘Ἀγαπήσεις (You shall love) τὸν (the) πλησίον (neighbor) σου (of you) ὡς (as) σεαυτόν (yourself).’ ⁴⁰ ἐν (On) ταύταις (these) ταῖς (-) δυσὶν (two) ἐντολαῖς (commandments), ὅλος (all) ὁ (the) νόμος (law) κρέμαται (hangs) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) προφῆται (Prophets).”

³⁴ Ἐντολὴν (A commandment) καινὴν (new) δίδωμι (I give) ὑμῖν (to you), ἵνα (that) ἀγαπᾶτε (you should love) ἀλλήλους (one another); καθὼς (as) ἠγάπησα (I have loved) ὑμᾶς (you), ἵνα (so) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) ἀγαπᾶτε (should love) ἀλλήλους (one another).

⁷ ἀπόδοτε (Render) πᾶσιν (to all) τὰς (their) ὀφειλάς (dues), τῷ (to whom) τὸν (the) φόρον (tax), τὸν (the) φόρον (tax); τῷ (to whom) τὸ (the) τέλος (revenue), τὸ (the) τέλος (revenue); τῷ (to whom) τὸν (the) φόβον (respect), τὸν (the) φόβον (respect); τῷ (to whom) τὴν (the) τιμὴν (honor), τὴν (the) τιμήν (honor).

¹⁰ ἡ (-) ἀγάπη (Love) τῷ (to the) πλησίον (neighbor) κακὸν (evil) οὐκ (not) ἐργάζεται (does do); πλήρωμα (the fulfillment) οὖν (therefore) νόμου (of the law) ἡ (-) ἀγάπη (love is).

¹⁴ ὁ (-) γὰρ (For) πᾶς (the entire) νόμος (Law) ἐν (in) ἑνὶ (one) λόγῳ (word) πεπλήρωται (is fulfilled) ἐν (in) τῷ (this): “Ἀγαπήσεις (You shall love) τὸν (the) πλησίον (neighbor) σου (of you) ὡς (as) σεαυτόν (yourself).”

¹⁴ ἐπὶ (Beyond) πᾶσιν (all) δὲ (now) τούτοις (these), τὴν (put on the) ἀγάπην (love), ὅ (which) ἐστιν (is) σύνδεσμος (the bond) τῆς (-) τελειότητος (of perfect unity).

⁵ Τὸ (-) δὲ (And) τέλος (the goal) τῆς (of our) παραγγελίας (instruction) ἐστὶν (is) ἀγάπη (love) ἐκ (out of) καθαρᾶς (a pure) καρδίας (heart) καὶ (and) συνειδήσεως (a conscience) ἀγαθῆς (good) καὶ (and) πίστεως (a faith) ἀνυποκρίτου (sincere),

⁸ Εἰ (If) μέντοι (indeed) νόμον (the law) τελεῖτε (you keep) βασιλικὸν (royal), κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) γραφήν (Scripture), “Ἀγαπήσεις (You shall love) τὸν (the) πλησίον (neighbor) σου (of you) ὡς (as) σεαυτόν (yourself),” καλῶς (well) ποιεῖτε (you are doing).

¹⁸ Λέγει (He says) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ποίας (Which)?” Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν* (said), “‘Τὸ (-) Οὐ (Not) φονεύσεις (shall you murder), Οὐ (not) μοιχεύσεις (shall you commit adultery), Οὐ (not) κλέψεις (shall you steal), Οὐ (not) ψευδομαρτυρήσεις (shall you bear false witness), ¹⁹ Τίμα (you shall honor) τὸν (the) πατέρα (father) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother), καὶ (and) Ἀγαπήσεις (you shall love) τὸν (-) πλησίον (neighbor) σου (of you) ὡς (as) σεαυτόν (yourself).’”

³⁹ δευτέρα (The second) ‹δὲ› (also) ὁμοία (is like) αὐτῇ (it): ‘Ἀγαπήσεις (You shall love) τὸν (the) πλησίον (neighbor) σου (of you) ὡς (as) σεαυτόν (yourself).’

¹⁹ τὰς (The) ἐντολὰς (commandments) οἶδας (you know): ‘Μὴ (Not) φονεύσῃς (shall you murder), Μὴ (not) μοιχεύσῃς (shall you commit adultery), Μὴ (not) κλέψῃς (shall you steal), Μὴ (not) ψευδομαρτυρήσῃς (shall you bear false witness), Μὴ (not) ἀποστερήσῃς (shall you defraud), Τίμα (you shall honor) τὸν (the) πατέρα (father) σου (of you) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother).’”

³¹ δευτέρα (The second) αὕτη (this): ‘Ἀγαπήσεις (You shall love) τὸν (the) πλησίον (neighbor) σου (of you) ὡς (as) σεαυτόν (yourself).’ μείζων (Greater) τούτων (than these) ἄλλη (another) ἐντολὴ (commandment) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (there is).”

²⁷ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), εἶπεν (he said), “‘Ἀγαπήσεις (You shall love) Κύριον (the Lord) τὸν (the) Θεόν (God) σου (of you) ἐξ (with) ὅλης (all) τῆς (the) καρδίας (heart) σου (of you), καὶ (and) ἐν (with) ὅλῃ (all) τῇ (the) ψυχῇ (soul) σου (of you), καὶ (and) ἐν (with) ὅλῃ (all) τῇ (the) ἰσχύϊ (strength) σου (of you), καὶ (and) ἐν (with) ὅλῃ (all) τῇ (the) διανοίᾳ (mind) σου (of you)’ καὶ (and) ‘Τὸν (The) πλησίον (neighbor) σου (of you) ὡς (as) σεαυτόν (yourself).’”

²⁰ τὰς (The) ἐντολὰς (commandments) οἶδας (You know): ‘Μὴ (Not) μοιχεύσῃς (shall you commit adultery), Μὴ (not) φονεύσῃς (shall you murder), Μὴ (not) κλέψῃς (shall you steal), Μὴ (not) ψευδομαρτυρήσῃς (shall you bear false witness), Τίμα (you shall honor) τὸν (the) πατέρα (father) σου (of you) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother).’”

⁷ Τί (What) οὖν (then) ἐροῦμεν (shall we say)? ὁ (Is the) νόμος (law) ἁμαρτία (sin)? μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)! ἀλλὰ (But) τὴν (-) ἁμαρτίαν (sin) οὐκ (not) ἔγνων (I have known), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) διὰ (by) νόμου (law); τήν (-) τε (then) γὰρ (for) ἐπιθυμίαν (covetousness), οὐκ (not) ᾔδειν (I had been conscious of), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὁ (the) νόμος (law) ἔλεγεν (had said), “Οὐκ (Not) ἐπιθυμήσεις (you shall covet).” ⁸ ἀφορμὴν (An occasion) δὲ (however) λαβοῦσα (having taken) ἡ (-) ἁμαρτία (sin) διὰ (by) τῆς (the) ἐντολῆς (commandment), κατειργάσατο (it produced) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (me) πᾶσαν (all) ἐπιθυμίαν (covetousness); χωρὶς (apart from) γὰρ (for) νόμου (the Law), ἁμαρτία (sin) νεκρά (is dead).

¹³ Ὑμεῖς (You) γὰρ (for) ἐπ’ (to) ἐλευθερίᾳ (freedom) ἐκλήθητε (were called), ἀδελφοί (brothers); μόνον (but) μὴ (not) τὴν (the) ἐλευθερίαν (freedom) εἰς (for) ἀφορμὴν (an opportunity) τῇ (to the) σαρκί (flesh). ἀλλὰ (Rather) διὰ (through) τῆς (-) ἀγάπης (love), δουλεύετε (serve) ἀλλήλοις (one another).

⁸ Εἰ (If) μέντοι (indeed) νόμον (the law) τελεῖτε (you keep) βασιλικὸν (royal), κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) γραφήν (Scripture), “Ἀγαπήσεις (You shall love) τὸν (the) πλησίον (neighbor) σου (of you) ὡς (as) σεαυτόν (yourself),” καλῶς (well) ποιεῖτε (you are doing). ⁹ εἰ (If) δὲ (however) προσωπολημπτεῖτε (you show partiality), ἁμαρτίαν (sin) ἐργάζεσθε (you are committing), ἐλεγχόμενοι (being convicted) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law) ὡς (as) παραβάται (transgressors). ¹⁰ Ὅστις (Whoever) γὰρ (for) ὅλον (all) τὸν (the) νόμον (law) τηρήσῃ (shall keep), πταίσῃ (shall stumble) δὲ (but) ἐν (in) ἑνί (one point), γέγονεν (he has become) πάντων (of all) ἔνοχος (guilty).

⁸ Μηδενὶ (To no one) μηδὲν (nothing) ὀφείλετε (owe), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) τὸ (-) ἀλλήλους (one another) ἀγαπᾶν (to love); ὁ (the one) γὰρ (for) ἀγαπῶν (loving) τὸν (the) ἕτερον (other), νόμον (the Law) πεπλήρωκεν (has fulfilled).

⁴ Ἡ (-) ἀγάπη (Love) μακροθυμεῖ (is patient), χρηστεύεται (is kind); ἡ (-) ἀγάπη (love) οὐ (not) ζηλοῖ (is envious); ἡ (-) ἀγάπη (love) οὐ (not) περπερεύεται (is boastful), οὐ (not) φυσιοῦται (is puffed up), ⁵ οὐκ (not) ἀσχημονεῖ (acts unbecomingly); οὐ (not) ζητεῖ (seeks) τὰ (the things) ἑαυτῆς (of its own), οὐ (not) παροξύνεται (is easily provoked), οὐ (not) λογίζεται (it keeps account) τὸ (-) κακόν (of wrongs); ⁶ οὐ (not) χαίρει (delights) ἐπὶ (at) τῇ (-) ἀδικίᾳ (unrighteousness), συνχαίρει (rejoices) δὲ (however) τῇ (in the) ἀληθείᾳ (truth). ⁷ πάντα (All things) στέγει (it bears), πάντα (all things) πιστεύει (believes), πάντα (all things) ἐλπίζει (hopes), πάντα (all things) ὑπομένει (endures).

³ καὶ (And) πρωΐ (in the morning), ‘Σήμερον (Today) χειμών (a storm); πυρράζει (is red) γὰρ (for) στυγνάζων (being overcast) ὁ (the) οὐρανός (sky).’ τὸ (The) μὲν (indeed) πρόσωπον (appearance) τοῦ (of the) οὐρανοῦ (sky) γινώσκετε (you know how) διακρίνειν (to discern), τὰ (-) δὲ (but) σημεῖα (the signs) τῶν (of the) καιρῶν (times), οὐ (not) δύνασθε (you are able)!

⁴² Γρηγορεῖτε (Keep watch) οὖν (therefore), ὅτι (for) οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (you know) ποίᾳ (on what) ἡμέρᾳ (day) ὁ (the) κύριος (Lord) ὑμῶν (of you) ἔρχεται (comes). ⁴³ ἐκεῖνο (This) δὲ (then) γινώσκετε (know), ὅτι (that) εἰ (if) ᾔδει (had known) ὁ (the) οἰκοδεσπότης (master of the house) ποίᾳ (in what) φυλακῇ (time of night) ὁ (the) κλέπτης (thief) ἔρχεται (comes), ἐγρηγόρησεν (he would have watched) ἂν (-) καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἂν (-) εἴασεν (have allowed) διορυχθῆναι (to be broken into) τὴν (the) οἰκίαν (house) αὐτοῦ (of him). ⁴⁴ διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this) καὶ (also), ὑμεῖς (you) γίνεσθε (be) ἕτοιμοι (ready), ὅτι (for) ᾗ (in that) οὐ (not) δοκεῖτε (you expect) ὥρᾳ (hour), ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἔρχεται (comes).

⁵ χρονίζοντος (Tarrying) δὲ (then) τοῦ (the) νυμφίου (bridegroom), ἐνύσταξαν (they became drowsy) πᾶσαι (all) καὶ (and) ἐκάθευδον (were sleeping). ⁶ Μέσης (At middle) δὲ (then) νυκτὸς (of the night), κραυγὴ (a cry) γέγονεν (there was): ‘Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ὁ (the) νυμφίος (bridegroom)! ἐξέρχεσθε (Go forth) εἰς (to) ἀπάντησιν (meet) ‹αὐτοῦ› (him)!’ ⁷ Τότε (Then) ἠγέρθησαν (arose) πᾶσαι (all) αἱ (the) παρθένοι (virgins) ἐκεῖναι (those) καὶ (and) ἐκόσμησαν (trimmed) τὰς (the) λαμπάδας (lamps) ἑαυτῶν (of them).

⁴⁰ Καὶ (And) ἔρχεται (He comes) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples) καὶ (and) εὑρίσκει (finds) αὐτοὺς (them) καθεύδοντας (sleeping). καὶ (And) λέγει (He says) τῷ (-) Πέτρῳ (to Peter), “Οὕτως (Thus) οὐκ (not) ἰσχύσατε (were you able) μίαν (one) ὥραν (hour) γρηγορῆσαι (to watch) μετ’ (with) ἐμοῦ (Me)? ⁴¹ γρηγορεῖτε (Watch) καὶ (and) προσεύχεσθε (pray), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) εἰσέλθητε (you enter) εἰς (into) πειρασμόν (temptation). τὸ (The) μὲν (indeed) πνεῦμα (spirit) πρόθυμον (is willing), ἡ (-) δὲ (but) σὰρξ (the flesh) ἀσθενής (weak).”

³⁵ γρηγορεῖτε (Watch) οὖν (therefore)— οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (you know) γὰρ (for) πότε (when) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) τῆς (of the) οἰκίας (house) ἔρχεται (comes), ἢ (or) ὀψὲ (at evening), ἢ (or) μεσονύκτιον (at midnight), ἢ (or) ἀλεκτοροφωνίας (when the rooster crows), ἢ (or) πρωΐ (morning) — ³⁶ μὴ (lest) ἐλθὼν (having come) ἐξαίφνης (suddenly), εὕρῃ (he should find) ὑμᾶς (you) καθεύδοντας (sleeping). ³⁷ ὃ (What) δὲ (now) ὑμῖν (to you) λέγω (I say), πᾶσιν (to all) λέγω (I say): γρηγορεῖτε (Watch)!”

²⁸ ἀρχομένων (Beginning) δὲ (then) τούτων (of these things) γίνεσθαι (to come to pass), ἀνακύψατε (look up) καὶ (and) ἐπάρατε (lift up) τὰς (the) κεφαλὰς (heads) ὑμῶν (of you), διότι (because) ἐγγίζει (draws near) ἡ (the) ἀπολύτρωσις (redemption) ὑμῶν (of you).”

²⁹ Τοῦτο (This) δέ (now) φημι (I say), ἀδελφοί (brothers): ὁ (The) καιρὸς (season) συνεσταλμένος (shortened) ἐστίν (is). τὸ (-) λοιπὸν (From now on) ἵνα (that) καὶ (both) οἱ (those) ἔχοντες (having) γυναῖκας (wives), ὡς (as) μὴ (none) ἔχοντες (having) ὦσιν (should be); ³⁰ καὶ (and) οἱ (those) κλαίοντες (weeping), ὡς (as) μὴ (not) κλαίοντες (weeping); καὶ (and) οἱ (those) χαίροντες (rejoicing), ὡς (as) μὴ (not) χαίροντες (rejoicing); καὶ (and) οἱ (those) ἀγοράζοντες (buying), ὡς (as) μὴ (not) κατέχοντες (possessing); ³¹ καὶ (and) οἱ (those) χρώμενοι (using) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), ὡς (as) μὴ (not) καταχρώμενοι (using it as their own). παράγει (Is passing away) γὰρ (for) τὸ (the) σχῆμα (present form) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world) τούτου (this).

¹¹ Ταῦτα (These things) δὲ (now) τυπικῶς (as types) συνέβαινεν (happened) ἐκείνοις (to them), ἐγράφη (were written) δὲ (then) πρὸς (for) νουθεσίαν (admonition) ἡμῶν (of us), εἰς (to) οὓς (whom) τὰ (the) τέλη (ends) τῶν (of the) αἰώνων (ages) κατήντηκεν (are arrived).

³⁴ ἐκνήψατε (Sober up) δικαίως (righteously) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ἁμαρτάνετε (sin); ἀγνωσίαν (ignorance) γὰρ (for) Θεοῦ (of God) τινες (some) ἔχουσιν (have); πρὸς (to) ἐντροπὴν (the shame) ὑμῖν (of you) λαλῶ (I speak).

¹⁴ διὸ (Therefore) λέγει (it says): “Ἔγειρε (Awake you), ὁ (the one) καθεύδων (sleeping), καὶ (and) ἀνάστα (rise up) ἐκ (out from) τῶν (the) νεκρῶν (dead), καὶ (and) ἐπιφαύσει (will shine upon) σοι (you) ὁ (-) Χριστός (Christ).”

¹ Περὶ (Concerning) δὲ (now) τῶν (the) χρόνων (times) καὶ (and) τῶν (the) καιρῶν (seasons), ἀδελφοί (brothers), οὐ (no) χρείαν (need) ἔχετε (you have) ὑμῖν (to you) γράφεσθαι (to be written). ² αὐτοὶ (Yourselves) γὰρ (for) ἀκριβῶς (fully) οἴδατε (you know) ὅτι (that) ἡμέρα (the day) Κυρίου (of the Lord), ὡς (as) κλέπτης (a thief) ἐν (by) νυκτὶ (night), οὕτως (in this manner) ἔρχεται (comes). ³ ὅταν (For when) λέγωσιν (they might say), “Εἰρήνη (Peace) καὶ (and) ἀσφάλεια (security),” τότε (then) αἰφνίδιος (suddenly) αὐτοῖς (upon them) ἐφίσταται* (comes) ὄλεθρος (destruction), ὥσπερ (as) ἡ (the) ὠδὶν (labor pains) τῇ (to her) ἐν (in) γαστρὶ (womb) ἐχούσῃ (having); καὶ (and) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) ἐκφύγωσιν (shall they escape).

⁵ πάντες (All) γὰρ (for) ὑμεῖς (you), υἱοὶ (sons) φωτός (of light) ἐστε (are), καὶ (and) υἱοὶ (sons) ἡμέρας (of day). Οὐκ (Not) ἐσμὲν (we are) νυκτὸς (of night) οὐδὲ (nor) σκότους (of darkness). ⁶ ἄρα (So) οὖν (then) μὴ (not) καθεύδωμεν (we should sleep) ὡς (as) οἱ (the) λοιποί (others), ἀλλὰ (but) γρηγορῶμεν (we should watch) καὶ (and) νήφωμεν (we should be sober). ⁷ οἱ (Those) γὰρ (for) καθεύδοντες (sleeping), νυκτὸς (by night) καθεύδουσιν (sleep); καὶ (and) οἱ (those) μεθυσκόμενοι (becoming drunk), νυκτὸς (by night) μεθύουσιν (get drunk). ⁸ ἡμεῖς (We) δὲ (however), ἡμέρας (of the day) ὄντες (being), νήφωμεν (should be sober), ἐνδυσάμενοι (having put on) θώρακα (the breastplate) πίστεως (of faith) καὶ (and) ἀγάπης (love), καὶ (and) περικεφαλαίαν (the helmet) ἐλπίδα (the hope) σωτηρίας (of salvation),

⁷ Πάντων (Of all) δὲ (now) τὸ (the) τέλος (end) ἤγγικεν (has drawn near). σωφρονήσατε (Be clear-minded) οὖν (therefore), καὶ (and) νήψατε (sober) εἰς (for the purpose of) προσευχάς (prayers),

¹³ καινοὺς (New) δὲ (however) οὐρανοὺς (heavens), καὶ (and) γῆν (earth) καινὴν (a new), κατὰ (according to) τὸ (the) ἐπάγγελμα (promise) αὐτοῦ (of Him), προσδοκῶμεν (we are awaiting), ἐν (in) οἷς (which) δικαιοσύνη (righteousness) κατοικεῖ (dwells). ¹⁴ Διό (Therefore), ἀγαπητοί (beloved), ταῦτα (these things) προσδοκῶντες (expecting), σπουδάσατε (be diligent) ἄσπιλοι (without spot) καὶ (and) ἀμώμητοι (without blemish) αὐτῷ (by Him) εὑρεθῆναι (to be found), ἐν (in) εἰρήνῃ (peace). ¹⁵ Καὶ (And) τὴν (the) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) μακροθυμίαν (patience) σωτηρίαν (as salvation) ἡγεῖσθε (esteem), καθὼς (just as) καὶ (also) ὁ (-) ἀγαπητὸς (beloved) ἡμῶν (of us) ἀδελφὸς (brother) Παῦλος (Paul), κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) δοθεῖσαν (having been given) αὐτῷ (to him) σοφίαν (wisdom), ἔγραψεν (wrote) ὑμῖν (to you),

¹⁹ Αὕτη (This) δέ (now) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) κρίσις (judgement), ὅτι (that) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light) ἐλήλυθεν (has come) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), καὶ (and) ἠγάπησαν (loved) οἱ (-) ἄνθρωποι (men) μᾶλλον (rather) τὸ (the) σκότος (darkness) ἢ (than) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light); ἦν (were) γὰρ (for) αὐτῶν (of them) πονηρὰ (evil) τὰ (the) ἔργα (deeds). ²⁰ πᾶς (Everyone) γὰρ (for) ὁ (-) φαῦλα (evil) πράσσων (practicing) μισεῖ (hates) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light) καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἔρχεται (comes) πρὸς (to) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) ἐλεγχθῇ (may be exposed) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) αὐτοῦ (of him); ²¹ ὁ (the one) δὲ (however) ποιῶν (practicing) τὴν (the) ἀλήθειαν (truth) ἔρχεται (comes) πρὸς (to) τὸ (the) φῶς (Light), ἵνα (that) φανερωθῇ (may be manifest) αὐτοῦ (his) τὰ (-) ἔργα (works) ὅτι (that) ἐν (in) Θεῷ (God) ἐστιν (have been) εἰργασμένα (done).”

¹⁴ ἀλλὰ (But) ἐνδύσασθε (put on) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) Χριστόν (Christ), καὶ (and) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh) πρόνοιαν (provision) μὴ (not) ποιεῖσθε (make) εἰς (for) ἐπιθυμίας (desires).

⁷ ἐν (in the) λόγῳ (word) ἀληθείας (of truth), ἐν (in the) δυνάμει (power) Θεοῦ (of God); διὰ (with) τῶν (the) ὅπλων (weapons) τῆς (-) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness) τῶν (for the) δεξιῶν (right hand) καὶ (and) ἀριστερῶν (for the left);

²² ἀποθέσθαι (Are to have put off) ὑμᾶς (you), κατὰ (concerning) τὴν (the) προτέραν (former) ἀναστροφὴν (way of life), τὸν (the) παλαιὸν (old) ἄνθρωπον (man), τὸν (which) φθειρόμενον (is being corrupted), κατὰ (according to) τὰς (its) ἐπιθυμίας (desires) τῆς (-) ἀπάτης (of deceit),

¹¹ Καὶ (And) μὴ (not) συνκοινωνεῖτε (have fellowship with) τοῖς (the) ἔργοις (works) τοῖς (-) ἀκάρποις (unfruitful) τοῦ (-) σκότους (of darkness); μᾶλλον (rather) δὲ (however) καὶ (even) ἐλέγχετε (expose them);

¹¹ ἐνδύσασθε (Put on) τὴν (the) πανοπλίαν (complete armor) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), πρὸς (for) τὸ (-) δύνασθαι (to be able) ὑμᾶς (you) στῆναι (to stand) πρὸς (against) τὰς (the) μεθοδείας (schemes) τοῦ (of the) διαβόλου (devil), ¹² ὅτι (because) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἡμῖν (to us) ἡ (the) πάλη (wrestling) πρὸς (against) αἷμα (blood) καὶ (and) σάρκα (flesh), ἀλλὰ (but) πρὸς (against) τὰς (the) ἀρχάς (rulers), πρὸς (against) τὰς (the) ἐξουσίας (authorities), πρὸς (against) τοὺς (the) κοσμοκράτορας (cosmic powers) τοῦ (of the) σκότους (darkness) τούτου (this), πρὸς (against) τὰ (the) πνευματικὰ (spiritual forces) τῆς (-) πονηρίας (of evil) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ἐπουρανίοις (heavenly realms). ¹³ Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), ἀναλάβετε (take up) τὴν (the) πανοπλίαν (complete armor) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἵνα (so that) δυνηθῆτε (you may be able) ἀντιστῆναι (to withstand) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἡμέρᾳ (day) τῇ (-) πονηρᾷ (evil), καὶ (and) ἅπαντα (all things) κατεργασάμενοι (having done), στῆναι (to stand). ¹⁴ στῆτε (Stand) οὖν (therefore), περιζωσάμενοι (having girded) τὴν (the) ὀσφὺν (loins) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐν (with) ἀληθείᾳ (truth), καὶ (and) ἐνδυσάμενοι (having put on) τὸν (the) θώρακα (breastplate) τῆς (-) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness), ¹⁵ καὶ (and) ὑποδησάμενοι (having shod) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) ἐν (with) ἑτοιμασίᾳ (the readiness) τοῦ (of the) εὐαγγελίου (gospel) τῆς (-) εἰρήνης (of peace); ¹⁶ ἐν (besides) πᾶσιν (all), ἀναλαβόντες (having taken up) τὸν (the) θυρεὸν (shield) τῆς (-) πίστεως (of faith), ἐν (with) ᾧ (which) δυνήσεσθε (you will be able) πάντα (all) τὰ (the) βέλη (arrows) τοῦ (of the) πονηροῦ (evil one) τὰ (-) πεπυρωμένα (flaming) σβέσαι (to quench). ¹⁷ καὶ (And) τὴν (the) περικεφαλαίαν (helmet) τοῦ (-) σωτηρίου (of salvation) δέξασθε (take), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μάχαιραν (sword) τοῦ (of the) Πνεύματος (Spirit), ὅ (which) ἐστιν (is) ῥῆμα (the word) Θεοῦ (of God), ¹⁸ διὰ (through) πάσης (all) προσευχῆς (prayer) καὶ (and) δεήσεως (supplication), προσευχόμενοι (praying) ἐν (in) παντὶ (every) καιρῷ (season) ἐν (in) Πνεύματι (the Spirit), καὶ (and) εἰς (unto) αὐτὸ (this very thing), ἀγρυπνοῦντες (watching) ἐν (with) πάσῃ (all) προσκαρτερήσει (perseverance) καὶ (and) δεήσει (supplication) περὶ (for) πάντων (all) τῶν (-) ἁγίων (saints),

⁶ ἦσαν (They were) δὲ (now) δίκαιοι (righteous) ἀμφότεροι (both) ἐναντίον (before) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God), πορευόμενοι (walking) ἐν (in) πάσαις (all) ταῖς (the) ἐντολαῖς (commandments) καὶ (and) δικαιώμασιν (ordinances) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἄμεμπτοι (blameless).

⁹ Ἢ (Or) οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (know you) ὅτι (that) ἄδικοι (the unrighteous ones) Θεοῦ (of God) βασιλείαν (the kingdom) οὐ (not) κληρονομήσουσιν (will inherit)? μὴ (Not) πλανᾶσθε (be deceived): οὔτε (neither) πόρνοι (the sexually immoral), οὔτε (nor) εἰδωλολάτραι (idolaters), οὔτε (nor) μοιχοὶ (adulterers), οὔτε (nor) μαλακοὶ (effeminate), οὔτε (nor) ἀρσενοκοῖται (homosexuals), ¹⁰ οὔτε (nor) κλέπται (thieves), οὔτε (nor) πλεονέκται (coveters), οὐ (not) μέθυσοι (drunkards), οὐ (nor) λοίδοροι (verbal abusers), οὐχ (nor) ἅρπαγες (swindlers), βασιλείαν (the kingdom) Θεοῦ (of God) κληρονομήσουσιν (will inherit).

¹² παρακαλοῦντες (exhorting) ὑμᾶς (you) καὶ (and) παραμυθούμενοι (comforting) καὶ (and) μαρτυρόμενοι (charging) εἰς (unto) τὸ (-) περιπατεῖν (to walk) ὑμᾶς (you) ἀξίως (worthily) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), τοῦ (who) καλοῦντος (calls) ὑμᾶς (you) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) ἑαυτοῦ (of Himself) βασιλείαν (kingdom) καὶ (and) δόξαν (glory).

³ Τοῦτο (This) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is) θέλημα (the will) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ὁ (the) ἁγιασμὸς (sanctification) ὑμῶν (of you): ἀπέχεσθαι (To abstain) ὑμᾶς (you are) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (-) πορνείας (sexual immorality); ⁴ εἰδέναι (to know) ἕκαστον (each) ὑμῶν (of you how) τὸ (the) ἑαυτοῦ (of himself) σκεῦος (vessel) κτᾶσθαι (to control) ἐν (in) ἁγιασμῷ (holiness) καὶ (and) τιμῇ (honor), ⁵ μὴ (not) ἐν (in) πάθει (the passion) ἐπιθυμίας (of lust), καθάπερ (as) καὶ (also) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles), τὰ (-) μὴ (not) εἰδότα (knowing) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God);

¹² ἵνα (so that) περιπατῆτε (you may walk) εὐσχημόνως (properly) πρὸς (toward) τοὺς (those) ἔξω (outside), καὶ (and) μηδενὸς (of no one) χρείαν (need) ἔχητε (may have).

¹⁷ ἀδιαλείπτως (Unceasingly) προσεύχεσθε (pray).

¹⁴ εἰ (If) δὲ (however) ζῆλον (jealousy) πικρὸν (bitter) ἔχετε (you have), καὶ (and) ἐριθείαν (self-interest) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) ὑμῶν (of you), μὴ (not) κατακαυχᾶσθε (boast of it) καὶ (and) ψεύδεσθε (lie) κατὰ (against) τῆς (the) ἀληθείας (truth). ¹⁵ οὐκ (Not) ἔστιν (is) αὕτη (this) ἡ (the) σοφία (wisdom) ἄνωθεν (from above) κατερχομένη (coming down), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐπίγειος (is earthly), ψυχική (unspiritual), δαιμονιώδης (demonic). ¹⁶ ὅπου (Where) γὰρ (for) ζῆλος (jealousy) καὶ (and) ἐριθεία (self-interest exist), ἐκεῖ (there will be) ἀκαταστασία (disorder) καὶ (and) πᾶν (every) φαῦλον (evil) πρᾶγμα (thing).

⁵ ἢ (Or) δοκεῖτε (think you) ὅτι (that) κενῶς (in vain) ἡ (the) γραφὴ (Scripture) λέγει (says), “Πρὸς (With) φθόνον (envy) ἐπιποθεῖ (yearns) τὸ (the) πνεῦμα (Spirit) ὃ (that) κατῴκισεν (He has made to dwell) ἐν (in) ἡμῖν (us)?”

¹ Ἀποθέμενοι (Having put aside) οὖν (therefore) πᾶσαν (all) κακίαν (malice), καὶ (and) πάντα (all) δόλον (deceit), καὶ (and) ὑποκρίσεις (hypocrisy), καὶ (and) φθόνους (envies), καὶ (and) πάσας (all) καταλαλιάς (evil speakings), ² ὡς (like) ἀρτιγέννητα (newborn) βρέφη (babies), τὸ (-) λογικὸν (reasonable) ἄδολον (pure) γάλα (milk) ἐπιποθήσατε (crave), ἵνα (so that) ἐν (by) αὐτῷ (it) αὐξηθῆτε (you may grow up) εἰς (in respect to) σωτηρίαν (salvation),

¹¹ Ἀγαπητοί (Beloved), παρακαλῶ (I exhort you) ὡς (as) παροίκους (aliens) καὶ (and) παρεπιδήμους (sojourners), ἀπέχεσθαι (to abstain) τῶν (from) σαρκικῶν (fleshly) ἐπιθυμιῶν (desires), αἵτινες (which) στρατεύονται (war) κατὰ (against) τῆς (the) ψυχῆς (soul), ¹² τὴν (the) ἀναστροφὴν (conduct) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐν (among) τοῖς (the) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles) ἔχοντες (keeping) καλήν (honorable), ἵνα (so that) ἐν (wherein) ᾧ (which) καταλαλοῦσιν (they speak against) ὑμῶν (you) ὡς (as) κακοποιῶν (evildoers), ἐκ (through) τῶν (the) καλῶν (good) ἔργων (deeds) ἐποπτεύοντες (having witnessed), δοξάσωσιν (they may glorify) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) ἐν (in) ἡμέρᾳ (the day) ἐπισκοπῆς (of visitation).

³ ἀρκετὸς (Is sufficient) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) παρεληλυθὼς (past) χρόνος (time) τὸ (the) βούλημα (desire) τῶν (of the) ἐθνῶν (Gentiles) κατειργάσθαι (to have carried out), πεπορευμένους (having walked) ἐν (in) ἀσελγείαις (sensuality), ἐπιθυμίαις (lusts), οἰνοφλυγίαις (drunkenness), κώμοις (orgies), πότοις (carousing), καὶ (and) ἀθεμίτοις (abominable) εἰδωλολατρίαις (idolatries). ⁴ Ἐν (With respect to) ᾧ (this) ξενίζονται (they think it strange), μὴ (not) συντρεχόντων (running with them) ὑμῶν (of you) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) αὐτὴν (same) τῆς (-) ἀσωτίας (of debauchery) ἀνάχυσιν (overflow), βλασφημοῦντες (speaking evil of you), ⁵ οἳ (who) ἀποδώσουσιν (will give) λόγον (account) τῷ (to Him who) ἑτοίμως (ready) ἔχοντι (is) κρῖναι (to judge) ζῶντας (the living) καὶ (and) νεκρούς (the dead).

¹³ ἀδικούμενοι (suffering wrong) μισθὸν (as the wage) ἀδικίας (of unrighteousness); ἡδονὴν (as pleasure) ἡγούμενοι (esteeming) τὴν (-) ἐν (in) ἡμέρᾳ (daytime) τρυφήν (carousal); σπίλοι (blots) καὶ (and) μῶμοι (blemishes), ἐντρυφῶντες (reveling) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἀπάταις (deceptions) αὐτῶν (of them), συνευωχούμενοι (feasting with) ὑμῖν (you); ¹⁴ ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) ἔχοντες (having) μεστοὺς (full) μοιχαλίδος (of adultery), καὶ (and) ἀκαταπαύστους (unceasing) ἁμαρτίας (from sin), δελεάζοντες (enticing) ψυχὰς (souls) ἀστηρίκτους (unestablished); καρδίαν (a heart) γεγυμνασμένην (having been exercised) πλεονεξίας (in craving) ἔχοντες (having)— κατάρας (of a curse) τέκνα (children)!

¹⁸ ὑπέρογκα (Arrogant) γὰρ (for) ματαιότητος (of vanity) φθεγγόμενοι (speaking words), δελεάζουσιν (they entice) ἐν (with) ἐπιθυμίαις (the passions) σαρκὸς (of the flesh) ἀσελγείαις (to sensuality) τοὺς (those) ὀλίγως (barely) ἀποφεύγοντας (escaping) τοὺς (from those) ἐν (in) πλάνῃ (error) ἀναστρεφομένους (living), ¹⁹ ἐλευθερίαν (freedom) αὐτοῖς (them) ἐπαγγελλόμενοι (promising), αὐτοὶ (themselves) δοῦλοι (slaves) ὑπάρχοντες (being) τῆς (-) φθορᾶς (of corruption). ᾧ (By what) γάρ (for) τις (anyone) ἥττηται (has been subdued), τούτῳ (by that) ‹καὶ› (also) δεδούλωται (he is enslaved). ²⁰ Εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) ἀποφυγόντες (having escaped) τὰ (the) μιάσματα (pollutions) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world) ἐν (through) ἐπιγνώσει (the knowledge) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) καὶ (and) Σωτῆρος (Savior) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), τούτοις (in these) δὲ (now) πάλιν (again) ἐμπλακέντες (having been entangled) ἡττῶνται (they are subdued), γέγονεν (has become) αὐτοῖς (to them) τὰ (the) ἔσχατα (last state) χείρονα (worse) τῶν (than the) πρώτων (first).

⁶ ὁ (The one) λέγων (claiming) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) μένειν (to abide), ὀφείλει (ought) καθὼς (just as) ἐκεῖνος (that) περιεπάτησεν (walk) καὶ (also) αὐτὸς (He) οὕτως (in the same way) περιπατεῖν (walked).

⁴ Ἐχάρην (I rejoiced) λίαν (exceedingly) ὅτι (that) εὕρηκα (I have found) ἐκ (some of) τῶν (the) τέκνων (children) σου (of you) περιπατοῦντας (walking) ἐν (in) ἀληθείᾳ (truth), καθὼς (just as) ἐντολὴν (commandment) ἐλάβομεν (we received) παρὰ (from) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father).

²³ ‹οὓς (others) δὲ› (also) σῴζετε (save), ἐκ (out of) πυρὸς (the fire) ἁρπάζοντες (snatching); οὓς (to others) δὲ (then) ἐλεᾶτε (show mercy) ἐν (with) φόβῳ (fear), μισοῦντες (hating) καὶ (even) τὸν (the) ἀπὸ (by) τῆς (the) σαρκὸς (flesh) ἐσπιλωμένον (having been stained) χιτῶνα (clothing).

¹² Ἄρα (So) οὖν (then), ἀδελφοί (brothers), ὀφειλέται (debtors) ἐσμέν (we are), οὐ (not) τῇ (to the) σαρκὶ (flesh), τοῦ (-) κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (flesh) ζῆν (to live). ¹³ εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (flesh) ζῆτε (you live), μέλλετε (you are about) ἀποθνήσκειν (to die); εἰ (if) δὲ (however) πνεύματι (by the Spirit) τὰς (the) πράξεις (deeds) τοῦ (of the) σώματος (body) θανατοῦτε (you put to death), ζήσεσθε (you will live).

²⁷ ὅσοι (As many as) γὰρ (for) εἰς (into) Χριστὸν (Christ) ἐβαπτίσθητε (you were baptized), Χριστὸν (Christ) ἐνεδύσασθε (you have put on).

¹⁶ Λέγω (I say) δέ (now), Πνεύματι (by the Spirit) περιπατεῖτε (walk), καὶ (and) ἐπιθυμίαν (the desire) σαρκὸς (of the flesh) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) τελέσητε (you should gratify). ¹⁷ ἡ (The) γὰρ (for) σὰρξ (flesh) ἐπιθυμεῖ (desires), κατὰ (against) τοῦ (the) Πνεύματος (Spirit), τὸ (-) δὲ (and) Πνεῦμα (the Spirit) κατὰ (against) τῆς (the) σαρκός (flesh); ταῦτα (these) γὰρ (for) ἀλλήλοις (to one another) ἀντίκειται (are opposed), ἵνα (in order) μὴ (not) ἃ (that) ἐὰν (if) θέλητε (you might wish) ταῦτα (those things) ποιῆτε (you should do).

²⁴ Οἱ (Those) δὲ (now) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), τὴν (the) σάρκα (flesh) ἐσταύρωσαν (have crucified) σὺν (with) τοῖς (its) παθήμασιν (passions) καὶ (and) ταῖς (-) ἐπιθυμίαις (desires).

²⁴ καὶ (and) ἐνδύσασθαι (to have put on) τὸν (the) καινὸν (new) ἄνθρωπον (man), τὸν (-) κατὰ (according to) Θεὸν (God) κτισθέντα (having been created) ἐν (in) δικαιοσύνῃ (righteousness) καὶ (and) ὁσιότητι (holiness) τῆς (-) ἀληθείας (of truth).

⁵ Νεκρώσατε (Put to death) οὖν (therefore) τὰ (the) μέλη (members) τὰ (which are) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth): πορνείαν (sexual immorality), ἀκαθαρσίαν (impurity), πάθος (passion), ἐπιθυμίαν (desire) κακήν (evil), καὶ (and) τὴν (-) πλεονεξίαν (covetousness), ἥτις (which) ἐστὶν (is) εἰδωλολατρία (idolatry), ⁶ δι’ (because of) ἃ (which things) ἔρχεται (is coming) ἡ (the) ὀργὴ (wrath) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ‹ἐπὶ (on) τοὺς (the) υἱοὺς (sons) τῆς (of) ἀπειθείας› (disobedience), ⁷ ἐν (in) οἷς (which) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) περιεπατήσατέ (walked) ποτε (once) ὅτε (when) ἐζῆτε (you were living) ἐν (in) τούτοις (them). ⁸ νυνὶ (Now) δὲ (however), ἀπόθεσθε (put off) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) τὰ (-) πάντα (all these things): ὀργήν (anger), θυμόν (rage), κακίαν (malice), βλασφημίαν (slander), αἰσχρολογίαν (foul language) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) στόματος (mouth) ὑμῶν (of you).

¹⁰ καὶ (and) ἐνδυσάμενοι (having put on) τὸν (the) νέον (new), τὸν (the one) ἀνακαινούμενον (being renewed) εἰς (in) ἐπίγνωσιν (knowledge) κατ’ (according to) εἰκόνα (the image) τοῦ (of the one) κτίσαντος (having created) αὐτόν (him), ¹¹ ὅπου (where) οὐκ (not) ἔνι (there is) Ἕλλην (Greek) καὶ (and) Ἰουδαῖος (Jew), περιτομὴ (circumcision) καὶ (and) ἀκροβυστία (uncircumcision), βάρβαρος (Barbarian), Σκύθης (Scythian), δοῦλος (slave), ἐλεύθερος (free); ἀλλὰ (but) ‹τὰ› (-) πάντα (all) καὶ (and) ἐν (in) πᾶσιν (all) Χριστός (Christ is). ¹² Ἐνδύσασθε (Put on) οὖν (therefore), ὡς (as) ἐκλεκτοὶ (the elect) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἅγιοι (holy) καὶ (and) ἠγαπημένοι (beloved), σπλάγχνα (hearts) οἰκτιρμοῦ (of compassion), χρηστότητα (kindness), ταπεινοφροσύνην (humility), πραΰτητα (gentleness), μακροθυμίαν (and patience);

¹⁵ Μὴ (Not) ἀγαπᾶτε (love) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) μηδὲ (nor) τὰ (the things) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world). ἐάν (If) τις (anyone) ἀγαπᾷ (should love) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἡ (the) ἀγάπη (love) τοῦ (of the) Πατρὸς (Father) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him), ¹⁶ ὅτι (because) πᾶν (all) τὸ (that is) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world), ἡ (the) ἐπιθυμία (desire) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἐπιθυμία (desire) τῶν (of the) ὀφθαλμῶν (eyes), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἀλαζονεία* (vaunting) τοῦ (of) βίου (life), οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) πατρός (Father), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) ἐστίν (is). ¹⁷ καὶ (And) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) παράγεται (is passing away), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἐπιθυμία (desire) αὐτοῦ (of it); ὁ (the one) δὲ (however) ποιῶν (doing) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) μένει (abides) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age).
