πάντες (All) γὰρ (for) παραστησόμεθα (we will stand before) τῷ (the) βήματι (judgment seat) τοῦ (of) Θεοῦ (God). ¹¹ γέγραπται (It has been written) γάρ (for): “Ζῶ (Live) ἐγώ (I), λέγει (says) Κύριος (the Lord), ὅτι (that) ἐμοὶ (to Me) κάμψει (will bow) πᾶν (every) γόνυ (knee), καὶ (and) πᾶσα (every) γλῶσσα (tongue) ἐξομολογήσεται (will confess) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God).” ¹² Ἄρα (So) οὖν (then), ἕκαστος (each) ἡμῶν (of us) περὶ (concerning) ἑαυτοῦ (himself), λόγον (account) δώσει (will give) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God). ¹³ Μηκέτι (No longer) οὖν (therefore) ἀλλήλους (one another) κρίνωμεν (should we judge); ἀλλὰ (but) τοῦτο (this) κρίνατε (determine) μᾶλλον (rather), τὸ (-) μὴ (not) τιθέναι (to put) πρόσκομμα (any stumbling block) τῷ (before your) ἀδελφῷ (brother), ἢ (or) σκάνδαλον (snare). ¹⁴ Οἶδα (I know) καὶ (and) πέπεισμαι (I am persuaded) ἐν (in the) Κυρίῳ (Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) ὅτι (that) οὐδὲν (nothing is) κοινὸν (unclean) δι’ (of) ἑαυτοῦ (itself); εἰ (if) μὴ (not) τῷ (to him) λογιζομένῳ (reckoning) τι (anything) κοινὸν (unclean) εἶναι (to be), ἐκείνῳ (to that one) κοινόν (unclean it is). ¹⁵ εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) διὰ (on account of) βρῶμα (food), ὁ (the) ἀδελφός (brother) σου (of you) λυπεῖται (is grieved), οὐκέτι (no longer) κατὰ (according to) ἀγάπην (love) περιπατεῖς (are you walking). μὴ (Not) τῷ (with the) βρώματί (food) σου (of you) ἐκεῖνον (that one) ἀπόλλυε (destroy), ὑπὲρ (for) οὗ (whom) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἀπέθανεν (died). ¹⁶ Μὴ (Not) βλασφημείσθω (let be spoken of as evil), οὖν (therefore), ὑμῶν (your) τὸ (-) ἀγαθόν (good). ¹⁷ οὐ (Not) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) βρῶσις (eating) καὶ (and) πόσις (drinking), ἀλλὰ (but) δικαιοσύνη (righteousness) καὶ (and) εἰρήνη (peace) καὶ (and) χαρὰ (joy) ἐν (in the) Πνεύματι (Spirit) Ἁγίῳ (Holy). ¹⁸ ὁ (The one) γὰρ (for) ἐν (in) τούτῳ (these things) δουλεύων (serving) τῷ (-) Χριστῷ (Christ) εὐάρεστος (is well-pleasing) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God) καὶ (and) δόκιμος (approved) τοῖς (-) ἀνθρώποις (by men). ¹⁹ Ἄρα (So) οὖν (then), τὰ (the things) τῆς (-) εἰρήνης (of peace) διώκωμεν* (we should pursue), καὶ (and) τὰ (the things) τῆς (-) οἰκοδομῆς (for edification) τῆς (-) εἰς (among) ἀλλήλους (each other). ²⁰ μὴ (Not) ἕνεκεν (for the sake of) βρώματος (food), κατάλυε (destroy) τὸ (the) ἔργον (work) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God). πάντα (All things) μὲν (indeed are) καθαρά (clean), ἀλλὰ (but) κακὸν (it is wrong) τῷ (to the) ἀνθρώπῳ (man) τῷ (-) διὰ (through) προσκόμματος (a stumbling block) ἐσθίοντι (eating). ²¹ καλὸν (It is good) τὸ (-) μὴ (neither) φαγεῖν (to eat) κρέα (meat), μηδὲ (nor) πιεῖν (to drink) οἶνον (wine), μηδὲ (nor anything) ἐν (in) ᾧ (which) ὁ (the) ἀδελφός (brother) σου (of you) προσκόπτει (stumbles). ²² Σὺ (You) πίστιν (the faith) ἣν (that) ἔχεις (have), κατὰ (to) σεαυτὸν (yourself) ἔχε (keep) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God). μακάριος (Blessed is) ὁ (the one) μὴ (not) κρίνων (judging) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ἐν (in) ᾧ (what) δοκιμάζει (he approves). ²³ ὁ (The one) δὲ (however) διακρινόμενος (doubting), ἐὰν (if) φάγῃ (he eats), κατακέκριται (has been condemned), ὅτι (because it is) οὐκ (not) ἐκ (of) πίστεως (faith); πᾶν (everything) δὲ (now) ὃ (that is) οὐκ (not) ἐκ (of) πίστεως (faith), ἁμαρτία (sin) ἐστίν (is).

⁴⁰ Ὁ (The One) δεχόμενος (receiving) ὑμᾶς (you), ἐμὲ (Me) δέχεται (receives); καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) ἐμὲ (Me) δεχόμενος (receiving), δέχεται (receives) τὸν (the One) ἀποστείλαντά (having sent) με (Me). ⁴¹ ὁ (The one) δεχόμενος (receiving) προφήτην (a prophet) εἰς (in the) ὄνομα (name) προφήτου (of a prophet), μισθὸν (the reward) προφήτου (of a prophet) λήμψεται (will receive); καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) δεχόμενος (receiving) δίκαιον (a righteous man) εἰς (in the) ὄνομα (name) δικαίου (of a righteous man), μισθὸν (the reward) δικαίου (of a righteous man) λήμψεται (will receive). ⁴² καὶ (And) ὃς (whoever) ἂν* (-) ποτίσῃ (shall give to drink) ἕνα (one) τῶν (the) μικρῶν (little ones) τούτων (of these) ποτήριον (a cup) ψυχροῦ (of cold water), μόνον (only) εἰς (in the) ὄνομα (name) μαθητοῦ (of a disciple), ἀμὴν (truly) λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), οὐ (no) μὴ (not) ἀπολέσῃ (shall he lose) τὸν (the) μισθὸν (reward) αὐτοῦ (of him).”

²⁰ κάλαμον (A reed) συντετριμμένον (bruised) οὐ (not) κατεάξει (He will break), καὶ (and) λίνον (a wick) τυφόμενον (smoldering) οὐ (not) σβέσει (He will quench), ἕως (until) ἂν (-) ἐκβάλῃ (He leads) εἰς (to) νῖκος (victory) τὴν (-) κρίσιν (justice).

³¹ Εὐθέως (Immediately) δὲ (now) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), ἐκτείνας (having stretched out) τὴν (the) χεῖρα (hand), ἐπελάβετο (took hold) αὐτοῦ (of him) καὶ (and) λέγει (says) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ὀλιγόπιστε (You of little faith), εἰς (of) τί (why) ἐδίστασας (did you doubt)?”

⁵ καὶ (And) ὃς (whoever) ἐὰν (if) δέξηται (shall receive) ἓν (one) παιδίον (little child) τοιοῦτο (such) ἐπὶ (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματί (name) μου (of Me), ἐμὲ (Me) δέχεται (receives). ⁶ Ὃς (Whoever) δ’ (then) ἂν (-) σκανδαλίσῃ (shall cause to stumble) ἕνα (one) τῶν (of the) μικρῶν (little ones) τούτων (of these) τῶν (-) πιστευόντων (believing) εἰς (in) ἐμέ (Me), συμφέρει (it is better) αὐτῷ (for him) ἵνα (that) κρεμασθῇ (should be hung) μύλος (a millstone) ὀνικὸς (heavy) περὶ (around) τὸν (the) τράχηλον (neck) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) καταποντισθῇ (he be sunk) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) πελάγει (depth) τῆς (of the) θαλάσσης (sea).

¹⁰ Ὁρᾶτε (See that) μὴ (not) καταφρονήσητε (you despise) ἑνὸς (one) τῶν (of the) μικρῶν (little ones) τούτων (of these). λέγω (I say) γὰρ (for) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) οἱ (the) ἄγγελοι (angels) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐν (in) οὐρανοῖς (the heavens) διὰ (continually) παντὸς (always) βλέπουσι (behold) τὸ (the) πρόσωπον (face) τοῦ (of the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of me), τοῦ (who is) ἐν (in) οὐρανοῖς (the heavens).

² λυσιτελεῖ (It is better) αὐτῷ (for him) εἰ (if) λίθος (a stone) μυλικὸς (of a mill) περίκειται (is hung) περὶ (around) τὸν (the) τράχηλον (neck) αὐτοῦ (of him) καὶ (and) ἔρριπται (he is thrown) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) θάλασσαν (sea), ἢ (than) ἵνα (that) σκανδαλίσῃ (he should cause to stumble) τῶν (-) μικρῶν (little) τούτων (of these) ἕνα (one).

²⁰ ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ὁ (the one) λαμβάνων (receiving) ἄν (-) τινα (any) πέμψω (I shall send), ἐμὲ (Me) λαμβάνει (receives); ὁ (the one) δὲ (now) ἐμὲ (Me) λαμβάνων (receiving), λαμβάνει (receives) τὸν (the One) πέμψαντά (having sent) με (Me).”

¹⁹ καὶ (And) μὴ (not) ἀσθενήσας (having become weak) τῇ (in the) πίστει (faith), κατενόησεν (he considered) τὸ (-) ἑαυτοῦ (of himself) σῶμα (the body) [ἤδη] (already) νενεκρωμένον (having become dead), ἑκατονταετής (a hundred years old) που (about) ὑπάρχων (being), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) νέκρωσιν (lifelessness) τῆς (of the) μήτρας (womb) Σάρρας (of Sarah).

²¹ καλὸν (It is good) τὸ (-) μὴ (neither) φαγεῖν (to eat) κρέα (meat), μηδὲ (nor) πιεῖν (to drink) οἶνον (wine), μηδὲ (nor anything) ἐν (in) ᾧ (which) ὁ (the) ἀδελφός (brother) σου (of you) προσκόπτει (stumbles).

¹ Ὀφείλομεν (We ought) δὲ (now), ἡμεῖς (we) οἱ (who are) δυνατοὶ (strong), τὰ (the) ἀσθενήματα (weaknesses) τῶν (of the) ἀδυνάτων (weak) βαστάζειν (to bear), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ἑαυτοῖς (ourselves) ἀρέσκειν (to please).

⁷ Διὸ (Therefore) προσλαμβάνεσθε (receive) ἀλλήλους (one another) καθὼς (as) καὶ (also) ὁ (-) Χριστὸς (Christ) προσελάβετο (received) ὑμᾶς* (you), εἰς (to) δόξαν (the glory) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

¹ Κἀγώ (And I) ἀδελφοί (brothers) οὐκ (not) ἠδυνήθην (was able) λαλῆσαι (to speak) ὑμῖν (to you) ὡς (as) πνευματικοῖς (to spiritual), ἀλλ’ (but) ὡς (as) σαρκίνοις (to fleshly), ὡς (as) νηπίοις (to infants) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ). ² γάλα (Milk) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐπότισα (I gave to drink), οὐ (not) βρῶμα (solid food), οὔπω (not yet) γὰρ (for) ἐδύνασθε (were you able). Ἀλλ’ (In fact), οὐδὲ (not) ἔτι (still) νῦν (now) δύνασθε (are you able);

⁷ Ἀλλ’ (But) οὐκ (not) ἐν (in) πᾶσιν (all is) ἡ (this) γνῶσις (knowledge). τινὲς (Some) δὲ (now), τῇ (-) συνηθείᾳ (by habit) ἕως (until) ἄρτι (now), τοῦ (of the) εἰδώλου (idol) ὡς (as of) εἰδωλόθυτον (a thing sacrificed to an idol) ἐσθίουσιν (eat); καὶ (and) ἡ (the) συνείδησις (conscience) αὐτῶν (of them) ἀσθενὴς (weak) οὖσα (being), μολύνεται (it is defiled). ⁸ βρῶμα (Food) δὲ (however) ἡμᾶς (us) οὐ (not) παραστήσει (will commend) τῷ (to) Θεῷ (God); οὔτε (neither) ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) φάγωμεν (we should eat) ὑστερούμεθα (do we come short), οὔτε (nor) ἐὰν (if) ‹μὴ› (not) φάγωμεν (we should eat) περισσεύομεν (have we an advantage). ⁹ Βλέπετε (Be careful) δὲ (however), μή (lest) πως (somehow) ἡ (the) ἐξουσία (right) ὑμῶν (of you) αὕτη (this) πρόσκομμα (an occasion of stumbling) γένηται (becomes) τοῖς (to those) ἀσθενέσιν (being weak). ¹⁰ ἐὰν (If) γάρ (for) τις (anyone) ἴδῃ (sees) σὲ (you), τὸν (-) ἔχοντα (having) γνῶσιν (knowledge), ἐν (in) εἰδωλείῳ (an idol’s temple) κατακείμενον (eating), οὐχὶ (not) ἡ (the) συνείδησις (conscience) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἀσθενοῦς (weak) ὄντος (being), οἰκοδομηθήσεται (will be built up), εἰς (so as) τὸ (the) τὰ (things) εἰδωλόθυτα (sacrificed to idols) ἐσθίειν (to eat)? ¹¹ ἀπόλλυται (Is destroyed) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the one) ἀσθενῶν (being weak) ἐν (through) τῇ (-) σῇ (your) γνώσει (knowledge), ὁ (the) ἀδελφὸς (brother) δι’ (for) ὃν (whom) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἀπέθανεν (died). ¹² οὕτως (Thus) δὲ (then) ἁμαρτάνοντες (sinning) εἰς (against) τοὺς (the) ἀδελφοὺς (brothers) καὶ (and) τύπτοντες (wounding) αὐτῶν (their) τὴν (-) συνείδησιν (conscience) ἀσθενοῦσαν (being weak), εἰς (against) Χριστὸν (Christ) ἁμαρτάνετε (you sin). ¹³ Διόπερ (Therefore) εἰ (if) βρῶμα (food) σκανδαλίζει (snares) τὸν (the) ἀδελφόν (brother) μου (of me), οὐ (never) μὴ (not) φάγω (shall I eat) κρέα (meat) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) τὸν (the) ἀδελφόν (brother) μου (of me) σκανδαλίσω (I might snare).

²² ἐγενόμην (I became) τοῖς (to the) ἀσθενέσιν (weak), ἀσθενής (weak), ἵνα (that) τοὺς (the) ἀσθενεῖς (weak) κερδήσω (I might win). τοῖς (These things) πᾶσιν (to all) γέγονα (I have become) πάντα (all), ἵνα (so that) πάντως (by all means), τινὰς (some) σώσω (I might save).

²⁹ προσδέχεσθε (Receive) οὖν (therefore) αὐτὸν (him) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord) μετὰ (with) πάσης (all) χαρᾶς (joy), καὶ (and) τοὺς (-) τοιούτους (such) ἐντίμους (in honor) ἔχετε (hold),

¹⁰ Εἴ (If) τις (anyone) ἔρχεται (comes) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you) καὶ (and) ταύτην (this) τὴν (-) διδαχὴν (teaching) οὐ (not) φέρει (does bring), μὴ (not) λαμβάνετε (receive) αὐτὸν (him) εἰς (into) οἰκίαν (the house), καὶ (and) χαίρειν (to rejoice) αὐτῷ (him) μὴ (not) λέγετε (tell);

⁸ ἡμεῖς (We) οὖν (therefore) ὀφείλομεν (ought) ὑπολαμβάνειν (to receive) τοὺς (-) τοιούτους (such men), ἵνα (so that) συνεργοὶ (fellow workers) γινώμεθα (we may be) τῇ (in the) ἀληθείᾳ (truth). ⁹ Ἔγραψά (I have written) τι (something) τῇ (to the) ἐκκλησίᾳ (church); ἀλλ’ (but) ὁ (the one) φιλοπρωτεύων (loving to be first) αὐτῶν (among them), Διοτρεφὴς (Diotrephes), οὐκ (not) ἐπιδέχεται (welcomes) ἡμᾶς (us). ¹⁰ διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), ἐὰν (if) ἔλθω (I might come), ὑπομνήσω (I will bring to remembrance) αὐτοῦ (of him) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) ἃ (which) ποιεῖ (he is doing), λόγοις (with words) πονηροῖς (evil) φλυαρῶν (prating against) ἡμᾶς (us); καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ἀρκούμενος (being satisfied) ἐπὶ (with) τούτοις (these), οὔτε (neither) αὐτὸς (himself) ἐπιδέχεται (he receives) τοὺς (the) ἀδελφοὺς (brothers), καὶ (and) τοὺς (those) βουλομένους (purposing), κωλύει (he forbids), καὶ (and) ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) ἐκκλησίας (church) ἐκβάλλει (he casts them out).

¹⁵ Πάντα (All things are) καθαρὰ (pure) τοῖς (to the) καθαροῖς (pure); τοῖς (to those) δὲ (however) μεμιαμμένοις (being defiled) καὶ (and) ἀπίστοις (unbelieving), οὐδὲν (nothing) καθαρόν (is pure); ἀλλὰ (Instead), μεμίανται (are defiled) αὐτῶν (their) καὶ (both) ὁ (-) νοῦς (mind) καὶ (and) ἡ (-) συνείδησις (conscience).

¹⁰ μόνον (consisting only) ἐπὶ (in) βρώμασιν (foods) καὶ (and) πόμασιν (drinks) καὶ (and) διαφόροις (various) βαπτισμοῖς (washings), δικαιώματα (ordinances) σαρκὸς (of the flesh), μέχρι (until) καιροῦ (the time) διορθώσεως (of reformation) ἐπικείμενα (being imposed).

⁹ Διδαχαῖς (By teachings) ποικίλαις (various) καὶ (and) ξέναις (strange), μὴ (not) παραφέρεσθε (be carried away); καλὸν (it is good) γὰρ (for) χάριτι (by grace) βεβαιοῦσθαι (to be strengthened) τὴν (for the) καρδίαν (heart), οὐ (not) βρώμασιν (foods), ἐν (in) οἷς (which) οὐκ (not) ὠφελήθησαν (were profited) οἱ (those) περιπατοῦντες (being devoted).

¹ Μὴ (Not) κρίνετε (do judge), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) κριθῆτε (you should be judged). ² ἐν (With) ᾧ (whatever) γὰρ (for) κρίματι (verdict) κρίνετε (you judge), κριθήσεσθε (you will be judged); καὶ (and) ἐν (with) ᾧ (whatever) μέτρῳ (measure) μετρεῖτε (you measure), μετρηθήσεται (it will be measured again) ὑμῖν (to you).

¹⁴ Τότε (Then) προσέρχονται (come) αὐτῷ (to Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) Ἰωάννου (of John), λέγοντες (saying), “Διὰ (Because of) τί (why) ἡμεῖς (we) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) νηστεύομεν (do fast) ‹πολλά› (many times); οἱ (the) δὲ (however) μαθηταί (disciples) σου (of You) οὐ (not) νηστεύουσιν (fast)?”

¹⁸ Ἦλθεν (Came) γὰρ (for) Ἰωάννης (John) μήτε (neither) ἐσθίων (eating) μήτε (nor) πίνων (drinking), καὶ (and) λέγουσιν (they say), ‘Δαιμόνιον (A demon) ἔχει (he has)!’ ¹⁹ ἦλθεν (Came) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἐσθίων (eating) καὶ (and) πίνων (drinking), καὶ (and) λέγουσιν (they say), ‘Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἄνθρωπος (a man), φάγος (a glutton) καὶ (and) οἰνοπότης (a drunkard), τελωνῶν (of tax collectors) φίλος (a friend) καὶ (and) ἁμαρτωλῶν (of sinners)!’ καὶ (But) ἐδικαιώθη (is justified) ἡ (-) σοφία (wisdom) ἀπὸ (by) τῶν (the) ἔργων (deeds) αὐτῆς (of her).”

⁹ Εἶπεν (He spoke) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) πρός (to) τινας (some) τοὺς (-) πεποιθότας (trusting) ἐφ’ (in) ἑαυτοῖς (themselves) ὅτι (that) εἰσὶν (they are) δίκαιοι (righteous), καὶ (and) ἐξουθενοῦντας (despising) τοὺς (the) λοιποὺς (others), τὴν (the) παραβολὴν (parable) ταύτην (this):

³⁴ Ἀνοίξας (Having opened) δὲ (then) Πέτρος (Peter) τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth), εἶπεν (he said), “Ἐπ’ (Of) ἀληθείας (a truth) καταλαμβάνομαι (I understand) ὅτι (that) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) προσωπολήμπτης (One who shows partiality) ὁ (-) Θεός (God),

⁴⁴ Ἔτι (Still) λαλοῦντος (speaking) τοῦ (-) Πέτρου (of Peter) τὰ (the) ῥήματα (words) ταῦτα (these), ἐπέπεσεν (fell) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τὸ (-) Ἅγιον (Holy) ἐπὶ (upon) πάντας (all) τοὺς (those) ἀκούοντας (hearing) τὸν (the) λόγον (word).

⁸ καὶ (And) ὁ (the) καρδιογνώστης (heart-knowing) Θεὸς (God) ἐμαρτύρησεν (bore witness) αὐτοῖς (to them), δοὺς (having given them) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τὸ (-) Ἅγιον (Holy), καθὼς (as) καὶ (also) ἡμῖν (to us), ⁹ καὶ (and) οὐθὲν (not one) διέκρινεν (He made distinction) μεταξὺ (between) ἡμῶν (us) τε (also) καὶ (and) αὐτῶν (them), τῇ (by the) πίστει (faith) καθαρίσας (having purified) τὰς (the) καρδίας (hearts) αὐτῶν (of them).

¹⁰ Σὺ (You) δὲ (however), τί (why) κρίνεις (judge you) τὸν (the) ἀδελφόν (brother) σου (or you), ἢ (or) καὶ (also) σὺ (you) τί (why) ἐξουθενεῖς (do despise) τὸν (the) ἀδελφόν (brother) σου (of you)? πάντες (All) γὰρ (for) παραστησόμεθα (we will stand before) τῷ (the) βήματι (judgment seat) τοῦ (of) Θεοῦ (God).

¹³ Μηκέτι (No longer) οὖν (therefore) ἀλλήλους (one another) κρίνωμεν (should we judge); ἀλλὰ (but) τοῦτο (this) κρίνατε (determine) μᾶλλον (rather), τὸ (-) μὴ (not) τιθέναι (to put) πρόσκομμα (any stumbling block) τῷ (before your) ἀδελφῷ (brother), ἢ (or) σκάνδαλον (snare).

¹⁵ εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) διὰ (on account of) βρῶμα (food), ὁ (the) ἀδελφός (brother) σου (of you) λυπεῖται (is grieved), οὐκέτι (no longer) κατὰ (according to) ἀγάπην (love) περιπατεῖς (are you walking). μὴ (Not) τῷ (with the) βρώματί (food) σου (of you) ἐκεῖνον (that one) ἀπόλλυε (destroy), ὑπὲρ (for) οὗ (whom) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἀπέθανεν (died).

²⁹ συνείδησιν (the conscience) δὲ (now), λέγω (I am saying), οὐχὶ (not) τὴν (-) ἑαυτοῦ (your own), ἀλλὰ (but) τὴν (that) τοῦ (of the) ἑτέρου (other); ἵνα‿ (that) τί (what) γὰρ (for) ἡ (the) ἐλευθερία (freedom) μου (of me) κρίνεται (is judged) ὑπὸ (by) ἄλλης (another’s) συνειδήσεως (conscience)? ³⁰ εἰ (If) ἐγὼ (I) χάριτι (with thankfulness) μετέχω (partake), τί (why) βλασφημοῦμαι (am I denounced) ὑπὲρ (for) οὗ (that which) ἐγὼ (I) εὐχαριστῶ (give thanks)?

¹⁶ Μὴ (Not) οὖν (therefore) τις (anyone) ὑμᾶς (you) κρινέτω (let judge) ἐν (in regard to) βρώσει (food), καὶ (or) ἐν (in regard to) πόσει (drink), ἢ (or) ἐν (in) μέρει (regard) ἑορτῆς (to a feast), ἢ (or) νεομηνίας (a New Moon), ἢ (or) σαββάτων (Sabbaths), ¹⁷ ἅ (which) ἐστιν (are) σκιὰ (a shadow) τῶν (the things) μελλόντων (coming); τὸ (the) δὲ (however) σῶμα (body is) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ).

²⁸ κἀγὼ (and I) δίδωμι (give) αὐτοῖς (them) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal); καὶ (and) οὐ (never) μὴ (not) ἀπόλωνται (shall they perish), εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age), καὶ (and) οὐχ (never) ἁρπάσει (will seize) τις (anyone) αὐτὰ (them) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) χειρός (hand) μου (of Me). ²⁹ ὁ (The) Πατήρ (Father) μου (of Me) ὃ (who) δέδωκέν (has given them) μοι (to Me), πάντων (than all) μεῖζόν (greater) ἐστιν (is), καὶ (and) οὐδεὶς (no one) δύναται (is able) ἁρπάζειν (to seize them) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) χειρὸς (hand) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father). ³⁰ ἐγὼ (I) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ἕν (one) ἐσμεν (are).”

¹⁷ εἰ (If) οὖν (then) τὴν (the) ἴσην (same) δωρεὰν (gift) ἔδωκεν (has given) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ὡς (as) καὶ (also) ἡμῖν (to us) πιστεύσασιν (having believed) ἐπὶ (on) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) Χριστόν (Christ), ἐγὼ (I) τίς (how) ἤμην (was) δυνατὸς (able) κωλῦσαι (to forbid) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God)?”

³¹ Τί (What) οὖν (then) ἐροῦμεν (will we say) πρὸς (to) ταῦτα (these things)? εἰ (If) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God is) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us), τίς (who can be) καθ’ (against) ἡμῶν (us)? ³² ὅς (He who) γε (indeed) τοῦ (the) ἰδίου (own) Υἱοῦ (Son) οὐκ (not) ἐφείσατο (spared), ἀλλὰ (but) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us) πάντων (all) παρέδωκεν (gave up) αὐτόν (Him), πῶς (how) οὐχὶ (not) καὶ (also) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him), τὰ (things) πάντα (all) ἡμῖν (us) χαρίσεται (will He grant)? ³³ τίς (Who) ἐγκαλέσει (will bring an accusation) κατὰ (against) ἐκλεκτῶν (the elect) Θεοῦ (of God)? Θεὸς (God is) ὁ (the One) δικαιῶν (justifying). ³⁴ τίς (Who is) ὁ (the one) κατακρινῶν (condemning)? Χριστὸς (For it is Christ) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), ὁ (the one) ἀποθανών (having died), μᾶλλον (rather) δὲ (now) ἐγερθείς (having been raised up), ὅς (who) ‹καί› (also) ἐστιν (is) ἐν (at the) δεξιᾷ (right hand) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ὃς (who) καὶ (and) ἐντυγχάνει (is interceding) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us). ³⁵ Τίς (Who) ἡμᾶς (us) χωρίσει (will separate) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) ἀγάπης (love) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ)? θλῖψις (Tribulation), ἢ (or) στενοχωρία (distress), ἢ (or) διωγμὸς (persecution), ἢ (or) λιμὸς (famine), ἢ (or) γυμνότης (nakedness), ἢ (or) κίνδυνος (danger), ἢ (or) μάχαιρα (sword)? ³⁶ καθὼς (As) γέγραπται (it has been written) ὅτι (-): “Ἕνεκεν (For the sake) σοῦ (of you), θανατούμεθα (we face death) ὅλην (all) τὴν (the) ἡμέραν (day); ἐλογίσθημεν (we were regarded) ὡς (as) πρόβατα (sheep) σφαγῆς (of slaughter).” ³⁷ Ἀλλ’ (But) ἐν (in) τούτοις (these things) πᾶσιν (all), ὑπερνικῶμεν (we more than conquer) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the One) ἀγαπήσαντος (having loved) ἡμᾶς (us). ³⁸ πέπεισμαι (I am persuaded) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) οὔτε (neither) θάνατος (death), οὔτε (nor) ζωὴ (life), οὔτε (nor) ἄγγελοι (angels), οὔτε (nor) ἀρχαὶ (principalities), οὔτε (nor) ἐνεστῶτα (things present), οὔτε (nor) μέλλοντα (things to come), οὔτε (nor) δυνάμεις (powers), ³⁹ οὔτε (nor) ὕψωμα (height), οὔτε (nor) βάθος (depth), οὔτε (nor) τις (any) κτίσις (created thing) ἑτέρα (other), δυνήσεται (will be able) ἡμᾶς (us) χωρίσαι (to separate) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (the) ἀγάπης (love) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) τῆς (-) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) τῷ (the) Κυρίῳ (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us).

²⁰ ὦ (O) ἄνθρωπε (man), μενοῦνγε (but rather), σὺ (you) τίς (who) εἶ (are) ὁ (-) ἀνταποκρινόμενος (answering against) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God)? μὴ (Not) ἐρεῖ (will say) τὸ (the) πλάσμα (thing formed) τῷ (to the One) πλάσαντι (having formed it), “Τί (Why) με (me) ἐποίησας (have you made) οὕτως (like this)?”

²³ κἀκεῖνοι (Even they) δέ (now) ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) ἐπιμένωσιν (they continue) τῇ (-) ἀπιστίᾳ (in unbelief), ἐνκεντρισθήσονται (will be grafted in); δυνατὸς (able) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) πάλιν (again) ἐνκεντρίσαι (to graft in) αὐτούς (them).

³ ὁ (The one) ἐσθίων (eating), τὸν (the one) μὴ (not) ἐσθίοντα (eating) μὴ (not) ἐξουθενείτω (let him despise); ὁ (the one) δὲ (now) μὴ (not) ἐσθίων (eating), τὸν (him) ἐσθίοντα (eating) μὴ (not) κρινέτω (let him judge), ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) γὰρ (for) αὐτὸν (him) προσελάβετο (has received).

²⁵ Τῷ (To Him) δὲ (now) δυναμένῳ (being able) ὑμᾶς (you) στηρίξαι (to strengthen), κατὰ (according to) τὸ (-) εὐαγγέλιόν (gospel) μου (my) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) κήρυγμα (preaching) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), κατὰ (according to) ἀποκάλυψιν (the revelation) μυστηρίου (of the mystery), χρόνοις (in times) αἰωνίοις (of the ages) σεσιγημένου (having been kept secret),

⁴ οὐδὲν (Nothing) γὰρ (for) ἐμαυτῷ (against myself) σύνοιδα (I am conscious of), ἀλλ’ (yet) οὐκ (not) ἐν (by) τούτῳ (this) δεδικαίωμαι (have I been justified); ὁ (the One) δὲ (however) ἀνακρίνων (judging) με (me) Κύριός (the Lord) ἐστιν (is). ⁵ Ὥστε (So then), μὴ (not) πρὸ (before the) καιροῦ (time) τι (anything) κρίνετε (judge), ἕως (until) ἂν (-) ἔλθῃ (shall have come) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord), ὃς (who) καὶ (both) φωτίσει (will bring to light) τὰ (the) κρυπτὰ (hidden things) τοῦ (-) σκότους (of darkness), καὶ (and) φανερώσει (will make manifest) τὰς (the) βουλὰς (motives) τῶν (of the) καρδιῶν (hearts); καὶ (and) τότε (then) ὁ (the) ἔπαινος (praise) γενήσεται (will come) ἑκάστῳ (to each) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God).

²⁵ ὅθεν (wherefore) καὶ (also), σῴζειν (to save) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) παντελὲς (uttermost) δύναται (He is able), τοὺς (those) προσερχομένους (drawing near) δι’ (through) αὐτοῦ (Him) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), πάντοτε (always) ζῶν (living) εἰς (for) τὸ (-) ἐντυγχάνειν (to intercede) ὑπὲρ (for) αὐτῶν (them).

¹¹ Μὴ (Not) καταλαλεῖτε (speak against) ἀλλήλων (one another), ἀδελφοί (brothers). ὁ (The one) καταλαλῶν (speaking against) ἀδελφοῦ (his brother) ἢ (or) κρίνων (judging) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), καταλαλεῖ (speaks against) νόμου (the Law) καὶ (and) κρίνει (judges) νόμον (the Law). εἰ (If) δὲ (however) νόμον (the Law) κρίνεις (you judge), οὐκ (not) εἶ (you are) ποιητὴς (a doer) νόμου (of the Law), ἀλλὰ (but) κριτής (a judge). ¹² εἷς (One) ἐστιν (there is) [ὁ] (-) νομοθέτης (Lawgiver) καὶ (and) κριτής (Judge), ὁ (the One) δυνάμενος (being able) σῶσαι (to save) καὶ (and) ἀπολέσαι (to destroy). σὺ (You) δὲ (however), τίς (who) εἶ (are) ὁ (-) κρίνων (judging) τὸν (the) πλησίον (neighbor)?

⁵ τοὺς (who) ἐν (by) δυνάμει (the power) Θεοῦ (of God) φρουρουμένους (are being guarded) διὰ (through) πίστεως (faith), εἰς (for) σωτηρίαν (the salvation) ἑτοίμην (ready) ἀποκαλυφθῆναι (to be revealed) ἐν (in) καιρῷ (the time) ἐσχάτῳ (last),

²⁴ Τῷ (To Him) δὲ (now) δυναμένῳ (being able) φυλάξαι (to keep) ὑμᾶς (you) ἀπταίστους (from stumbling) καὶ (and) στῆσαι (to present you) κατενώπιον (in the presence of) τῆς (the) δόξης (glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἀμώμους (blameless) ἐν (with) ἀγαλλιάσει (exultation) —

²³ ὁ (The one) δὲ (however) διακρινόμενος (doubting), ἐὰν (if) φάγῃ (he eats), κατακέκριται (has been condemned), ὅτι (because it is) οὐκ (not) ἐκ (of) πίστεως (faith); πᾶν (everything) δὲ (now) ὃ (that is) οὐκ (not) ἐκ (of) πίστεως (faith), ἁμαρτία (sin) ἐστίν (is).

⁷ Ἀλλ’ (But) οὐκ (not) ἐν (in) πᾶσιν (all is) ἡ (this) γνῶσις (knowledge). τινὲς (Some) δὲ (now), τῇ (-) συνηθείᾳ (by habit) ἕως (until) ἄρτι (now), τοῦ (of the) εἰδώλου (idol) ὡς (as of) εἰδωλόθυτον (a thing sacrificed to an idol) ἐσθίουσιν (eat); καὶ (and) ἡ (the) συνείδησις (conscience) αὐτῶν (of them) ἀσθενὴς (weak) οὖσα (being), μολύνεται (it is defiled).

¹¹ ἀπόλλυται (Is destroyed) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the one) ἀσθενῶν (being weak) ἐν (through) τῇ (-) σῇ (your) γνώσει (knowledge), ὁ (the) ἀδελφὸς (brother) δι’ (for) ὃν (whom) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἀπέθανεν (died).

⁹ νῦν (now) δὲ (however), γνόντες (having known) Θεόν (God), μᾶλλον (rather) δὲ (however) γνωσθέντες (having been known) ὑπὸ (by) Θεοῦ (God), πῶς (how) ἐπιστρέφετε (do you turn) πάλιν (again) ἐπὶ (to) τὰ (the) ἀσθενῆ (weak) καὶ (and) πτωχὰ (destitute) στοιχεῖα (principles), οἷς (to which) πάλιν (again) ἄνωθεν (anew) δουλεύειν* (to be enslaved) θέλετε (you desire)? ¹⁰ ἡμέρας (Days) παρατηρεῖσθε (you observe), καὶ (and) μῆνας (months) καὶ (and) καιροὺς (seasons) καὶ (and) ἐνιαυτούς (years).

¹⁹ καὶ (And) κελεύσας (having commanded) τοὺς (the) ὄχλους (crowds) ἀνακλιθῆναι (to sit down) ἐπὶ (on) τοῦ (the) χόρτου (grass), λαβὼν (having taken) τοὺς (the) πέντε (five) ἄρτους (loaves) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) δύο (two) ἰχθύας (fish), ἀναβλέψας (having looked up) εἰς (to) τὸν (-) οὐρανὸν (heaven), εὐλόγησεν (He spoke a blessing); καὶ (and) κλάσας (having broken), ἔδωκεν (He gave) τοῖς (to the) μαθηταῖς (disciples) τοὺς (the) ἄρτους (loaves), οἱ (-) δὲ (and) μαθηταὶ (the disciples) τοῖς (to the) ὄχλοις (crowds).

³⁶ ἔλαβεν (having taken) τοὺς (the) ἑπτὰ (seven) ἄρτους (loaves) καὶ (and) τοὺς (the) ἰχθύας (fish), καὶ (and) εὐχαριστήσας (having given thanks), ἔκλασεν (He broke them) καὶ (and) ἐδίδου (was giving) τοῖς (to) μαθηταῖς (disciples), οἱ (-) δὲ (and the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) τοῖς (to the) ὄχλοις (crowd).

²⁸ Εἶπον (They said) οὖν (therefore) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (Him), “Τί (What) ποιῶμεν (must we do), ἵνα (that) ἐργαζώμεθα (we may be doing) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God)?”

³⁰ εἰ (If) ἐγὼ (I) χάριτι (with thankfulness) μετέχω (partake), τί (why) βλασφημοῦμαι (am I denounced) ὑπὲρ (for) οὗ (that which) ἐγὼ (I) εὐχαριστῶ (give thanks)? ³¹ Εἴτε (Whether) οὖν (therefore) ἐσθίετε (you eat), εἴτε (or) πίνετε (drink), εἴτε (or) τι (whatever) ποιεῖτε (you do), πάντα (all things) εἰς (to the) δόξαν (glory) Θεοῦ (of God) ποιεῖτε (do).

¹⁰ ἡμέρας (Days) παρατηρεῖσθε (you observe), καὶ (and) μῆνας (months) καὶ (and) καιροὺς (seasons) καὶ (and) ἐνιαυτούς (years).

³ κωλυόντων (forbidding) γαμεῖν (to marry), ἀπέχεσθαι (commanding to abstain) βρωμάτων (from foods) ἃ (that) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἔκτισεν (created) εἰς (for) μετάλημψιν (reception) μετὰ (with) εὐχαριστίας (thanksgiving) τοῖς (by the) πιστοῖς (faithful) καὶ (and) ἐπεγνωκόσι (those knowing) τὴν (the) ἀλήθειαν (truth). ⁴ ὅτι (For) πᾶν (every) κτίσμα (creature) Θεοῦ (of God) καλόν (is good), καὶ (and) οὐδὲν (nothing is) ἀπόβλητον (to be rejected), μετὰ (with) εὐχαριστίας (thanksgiving) λαμβανόμενον (being received); ⁵ ἁγιάζεται (it is sanctified) γὰρ (for) διὰ (by) λόγου (the word) Θεοῦ (of God) καὶ (and) ἐντεύξεως (prayer).

⁹ εἰς (Unto) τοῦτο (this) γὰρ (for), Χριστὸς (Christ) ἀπέθανεν (died) καὶ (and) ἔζησεν (lived again), ἵνα (that) καὶ (both the) νεκρῶν (dead) καὶ (and) ζώντων (living) κυριεύσῃ (He might rule over).

¹⁹ ἢ (Or) οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (know you) ὅτι (that) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body) ὑμῶν (of you) ναὸς (a temple) τοῦ (of the) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) Ἁγίου (Holy) Πνεύματός (Spirit) ἐστιν (is), οὗ (whom) ἔχετε (you have) ἀπὸ (from) Θεοῦ (God)? καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) ἐστὲ (you are) ἑαυτῶν (your own), ²⁰ ἠγοράσθητε (you were bought) γὰρ (for) τιμῆς (with a price); δοξάσατε (glorify) δὴ (therefore) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) σώματι (body) ὑμῶν (of you).

¹⁵ καὶ (And) ὑπὲρ (for) πάντων (all) ἀπέθανεν (He died), ἵνα (that) οἱ (those) ζῶντες (living), μηκέτι (no longer) ἑαυτοῖς (to themselves) ζῶσιν (should live), ἀλλὰ (but) τῷ (to the One) ὑπὲρ (for) αὐτῶν (them) ἀποθανόντι (having died) καὶ (and) ἐγερθέντι (having been raised again).

¹⁹ ἐγὼ (I) γὰρ (for), διὰ (through) νόμου (the Law) νόμῳ (to the Law) ἀπέθανον (died), ἵνα (that) Θεῷ (to God) ζήσω (I might live). ²⁰ Χριστῷ (Christ) συνεσταύρωμαι (I have been crucified with); ζῶ (I live) δὲ (now), οὐκέτι (no longer) ἐγώ (I); ζῇ (lives) δὲ (however) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (me) Χριστός (Christ); ὃ (that which) δὲ (then) νῦν (now) ζῶ (I live) ἐν (in) σαρκί (the flesh), ἐν (through) πίστει (faith) ζῶ (I live), τῇ (that) τοῦ (from the) Υἱοῦ (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), τοῦ (the One) ἀγαπήσαντός (having loved) με (me) καὶ (and) παραδόντος (having given up) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) ὑπὲρ (for) ἐμοῦ (me).

²⁰ κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) ἀποκαραδοκίαν (earnest expectation) καὶ (and) ἐλπίδα (hope) μου (of me) ὅτι (that) ἐν (in) οὐδενὶ (nothing) αἰσχυνθήσομαι (I will be ashamed), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐν (in) πάσῃ (all) παρρησίᾳ (boldness), ὡς (as) πάντοτε (always) καὶ (also) νῦν (now), μεγαλυνθήσεται (will be magnified) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) σώματί (body) μου (of me), εἴτε (whether) διὰ (by) ζωῆς (life) εἴτε (or) διὰ (by) θανάτου (death). ²¹ Ἐμοὶ (To me) γὰρ (for) τὸ (-) ζῆν (to live) Χριστὸς (is Christ), καὶ (and) τὸ (-) ἀποθανεῖν (to die) κέρδος (is gain). ²² εἰ (If I am) δὲ (however) τὸ (-) ζῆν (to live) ἐν (in) σαρκί (flesh), τοῦτό (this) μοι (for me) καρπὸς (is the fruit) ἔργου (of labor). καὶ (And) τί (what) αἱρήσομαι (shall I choose)? οὐ (Not) γνωρίζω (I know)! ²³ συνέχομαι (I am pressed) δὲ (however) ἐκ (between) τῶν (the) δύο (two), τὴν (the) ἐπιθυμίαν (desire) ἔχων (having) εἰς (for myself) τὸ (-) ἀναλῦσαι (to depart) καὶ (and) σὺν (with) Χριστῷ (Christ) εἶναι (to be), πολλῷ (very much) γὰρ (for) μᾶλλον (more) κρεῖσσον (better); ²⁴ τὸ (-) δὲ (but) ἐπιμένειν (to remain) ‹ἐν› (in) τῇ (the) σαρκὶ (flesh) ἀναγκαιότερον (is more necessary) δι’ (for the sake of) ὑμᾶς (you).

¹⁰ τοῦ (the One) ἀποθανόντος (having died) περὶ (for) ἡμῶν (us), ἵνα (so that) εἴτε (whether) γρηγορῶμεν (we might watch) εἴτε (or) καθεύδωμεν (we might sleep), ἅμα (together) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him) ζήσωμεν (we may live).

¹⁴ ὃς (who) ἔδωκεν (gave) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us), ἵνα (that) λυτρώσηται (He might redeem) ἡμᾶς (us) ἀπὸ (from) πάσης (all) ἀνομίας (lawlessness), καὶ (and) καθαρίσῃ (might purify) ἑαυτῷ (to Himself) λαὸν (a people) περιούσιον (specially chosen), ζηλωτὴν (zealous) καλῶν (of good) ἔργων (works).

² εἰς (so as) τὸ (-) μηκέτι (no longer) ἀνθρώπων (to men’s) ἐπιθυμίαις (desires) ἀλλὰ (but) θελήματι (to the will) Θεοῦ (of God), τὸν (the) ἐπίλοιπον (remaining) ἐν (in) σαρκὶ (the flesh) βιῶσαι (to live) χρόνον (time).

¹⁹ τοῦτο (This) δὲ (now) εἶπεν (He said) σημαίνων (signifying) ποίῳ (by what) θανάτῳ (death) δοξάσει (he will glorify) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God). Καὶ (And) τοῦτο (this) εἰπὼν (having said), λέγει (He says) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ἀκολούθει (Follow) μοι (Me).”

³⁶ Δαυὶδ (David) μὲν (indeed) γὰρ (for) ἰδίᾳ (in his own) γενεᾷ (generation) ὑπηρετήσας (having served) τῇ (the) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) βουλῇ (purpose), ἐκοιμήθη (fell asleep) καὶ (and) προσετέθη (was added) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) πατέρας (fathers) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) εἶδεν (saw) διαφθοράν (decay).

²⁴ ἀλλ’ (But) οὐδενὸς (not any) λόγου (account) ποιοῦμαι (I make) τὴν (my) ψυχὴν (life) τιμίαν (dear) ἐμαυτῷ (to myself), ὡς (so as) τελειῶσαι* (to finish) τὸν (the) δρόμον (course) μου (of me), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) διακονίαν (ministry) ἣν (that) ἔλαβον (I received) παρὰ (from) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), διαμαρτύρασθαι (to testify fully) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιον (gospel) τῆς (of the) χάριτος (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

¹³ Τότε (Then) ἀπεκρίθη (answered) ὁ (-) Παῦλος (Paul), “Τί (What) ποιεῖτε (are you doing), κλαίοντες (weeping) καὶ (and) συνθρύπτοντές (breaking) μου (my) τὴν (-) καρδίαν (heart)? ἐγὼ (I) γὰρ (for) οὐ (not) μόνον (only) δεθῆναι (to be bound), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) ἀποθανεῖν (to die) εἰς (at) Ἰερουσαλὴμ (Jerusalem), ἑτοίμως (readiness) ἔχω (have), ὑπὲρ (for) τοῦ (the) ὀνόματος (name) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).”

²² εἴτε (whether) Παῦλος (Paul), εἴτε (or) Ἀπολλῶς (Apollos), εἴτε (or) Κηφᾶς (Cephas), εἴτε (or the) κόσμος (world), εἴτε (or) ζωὴ (life), εἴτε (or) θάνατος (death), εἴτε (or) ἐνεστῶτα (things present), εἴτε (or) μέλλοντα (things to come)— πάντα (all) ὑμῶν (yours), ²³ ὑμεῖς (you) δὲ (now) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), Χριστὸς (Christ) δὲ (now) Θεοῦ (of God).

²³ Ἕκαστος (Each) δὲ (however) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἰδίῳ (own) τάγματι (order): ἀπαρχὴ (the firstfruit) Χριστός (Christ), ἔπειτα (then) οἱ (those) τοῦ (of) Χριστοῦ (Christ) ἐν (at) τῇ (the) παρουσίᾳ (coming) αὐτοῦ (of Him);

¹⁷ Ἀλλὰ (But) εἰ (if) καὶ (even) σπένδομαι (I am being poured out as a drink offering) ἐπὶ (on) τῇ (the) θυσίᾳ (sacrifice) καὶ (and) λειτουργίᾳ (service) τῆς (of the) πίστεως (faith) ὑμῶν (of you), χαίρω (I am glad) καὶ (and) συνχαίρω (rejoice with) πᾶσιν (all) ὑμῖν (you).

³⁰ ὅτι (because) διὰ (for the sake of) τὸ (the) ἔργον (work) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), μέχρι (unto) θανάτου (death) ἤγγισεν (he came near), παραβολευσάμενος (having disregarded) τῇ (his) ψυχῇ (life) ἵνα (so that) ἀναπληρώσῃ (he might fill up) τὸ (the) ὑμῶν (of you) ὑστέρημα (deficit) τῆς (of) πρός (toward) με (me) λειτουργίας (service).

¹⁴ εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) πιστεύομεν (we believe) ὅτι (that) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἀπέθανεν (died) καὶ (and) ἀνέστη (rose again), οὕτως (so) καὶ (also) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God), τοὺς (those) κοιμηθέντας (having fallen asleep) διὰ (through) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), ἄξει (will bring) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him). ¹⁵ Τοῦτο (This) γὰρ (for) ὑμῖν (to you) λέγομεν (we declare) ἐν (in) λόγῳ (the word) Κυρίου (of the Lord), ὅτι (that) ἡμεῖς (we) οἱ (the) ζῶντες (living) οἱ (-) περιλειπόμενοι (remaining), εἰς (unto) τὴν (the) παρουσίαν (coming) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) φθάσωμεν (shall precede) τοὺς (those) κοιμηθέντας (having fallen asleep), ¹⁶ ὅτι (because) αὐτὸς (Himself) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) ἐν (with) κελεύσματι (a loud command), ἐν (with) φωνῇ (the voice) ἀρχαγγέλου (of an archangel), καὶ (and) ἐν (with) σάλπιγγι (the trumpet) Θεοῦ (of God), καταβήσεται (will descend) ἀπ’ (from) οὐρανοῦ (heaven), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) νεκροὶ (dead) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) ἀναστήσονται (will rise) πρῶτον (first). ¹⁷ ἔπειτα (Then) ἡμεῖς (we) οἱ (the) ζῶντες (living) οἱ (-) περιλειπόμενοι (remaining), ἅμα (together) σὺν (with) αὐτοῖς (them), ἁρπαγησόμεθα (will be caught away) ἐν (in) νεφέλαις (the clouds) εἰς (for) ἀπάντησιν (the meeting) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) εἰς (in) ἀέρα (the air); καὶ (and) οὕτως (so) πάντοτε (always) σὺν (with) Κυρίῳ (the Lord) ἐσόμεθα (we will be). ¹⁸ Ὥστε (Therefore) παρακαλεῖτε (encourage) ἀλλήλους (one another) ἐν (with) τοῖς (the) λόγοις (words) τούτοις (these).

¹³ Καὶ (And) ἤκουσα (I heard) φωνῆς (a voice) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (-) οὐρανοῦ (heaven), λεγούσης (saying) “Γράψον (Write), ‘Μακάριοι (Blessed are) οἱ (the) νεκροὶ (dead) οἱ (-) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord) ἀποθνῄσκοντες (dying) ἀπ’ (from) ἄρτι (now on).’” “Ναί (Yes),” λέγει (says) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit), “Ἵνα (so that) ἀναπαήσονται (they will rest) ἐκ (from) τῶν (the) κόπων (labors) αὐτῶν (of them); τὰ (-) γὰρ (for) ἔργα (the works) αὐτῶν (of them) ἀκολουθεῖ (follow) μετ’ (with) αὐτῶν (them).”

¹⁸ Καὶ (And) προσελθὼν (having come to them), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐλάλησεν (spoke) αὐτοῖς (to them), λέγων (saying), “Ἐδόθη (Has been given) μοι (to Me) πᾶσα (all) ἐξουσία (authority) ἐν (in) οὐρανῷ (heaven) καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth).

²⁶ οὐχὶ (Not) ταῦτα (these things) ἔδει (was it necessary for) παθεῖν (to suffer) τὸν (the) Χριστὸν (Christ) καὶ (and) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him)?”

²² οὐδὲ (Not even) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) κρίνει (judges) οὐδένα (no one), ἀλλὰ (but) τὴν (-) κρίσιν (judgment) πᾶσαν (all) δέδωκεν (has given) τῷ (to the) Υἱῷ (Son), ²³ ἵνα (so that) πάντες (all) τιμῶσι (may honor) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son), καθὼς (even as) τιμῶσι (they honor) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father). ὁ (He who) μὴ (not) τιμῶν (is honoring) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son), οὐ (not) τιμᾷ (is honoring) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father), τὸν (the One) πέμψαντα (having sent) αὐτόν (Him).

²⁷ καὶ (And) ἐξουσίαν (authority) ἔδωκεν (He gave) αὐτῷ (Him) κρίσιν (judgment) ποιεῖν (to execute), ὅτι (because) Υἱὸς (Son) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἐστίν (He is). ²⁸ μὴ (Not) θαυμάζετε (marvel at) τοῦτο (this), ὅτι (for) ἔρχεται (is coming) ὥρα (an hour) ἐν (in) ᾗ (which) πάντες (all) οἱ (those) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) μνημείοις (tombs) ἀκούσουσιν (will hear) τῆς (the) φωνῆς (voice) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ²⁹ καὶ (and) ἐκπορεύσονται (will come forth) — οἱ (those) τὰ (-) ἀγαθὰ (good) ποιήσαντες (having done), εἰς (to) ἀνάστασιν (the resurrection) ζωῆς (of life); οἱ (-) ‹δὲ› (and) τὰ (those) φαῦλα (evil) πράξαντες (having done), εἰς (to) ἀνάστασιν (the resurrection) κρίσεως (of judgment).

³⁶ τὸν (the) λόγον (word) ὃν (that) ἀπέστειλεν (He sent) τοῖς (to the) υἱοῖς (sons) Ἰσραὴλ (of Israel), εὐαγγελιζόμενος (proclaiming the gospel), εἰρήνην (peace) διὰ (by) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ)— οὗτός (He) ἐστιν (is) πάντων (of all) Κύριος (Lord).

⁴² καὶ (And) παρήγγειλεν (He instructed) ἡμῖν (us) κηρύξαι (to proclaim) τῷ (to the) λαῷ (people) καὶ (and) διαμαρτύρασθαι (to testify fully) ὅτι (that) οὗτός (He) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the One) ὡρισμένος (having been appointed) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) Κριτὴς (as judge) ζώντων (of living) καὶ (and) νεκρῶν (dead).

¹⁴ ἡ (The) γὰρ (for) ἀγάπη (love) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) συνέχει (compels) ἡμᾶς (us), κρίναντας (having concluded) τοῦτο (this), ὅτι (that) εἷς (One) ὑπὲρ (for) πάντων (all) ἀπέθανεν (has died), ἄρα (therefore) οἱ (-) πάντες (all) ἀπέθανον (have died).

²⁰ ἣν (which) ἐνήργηκεν (He worked) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Χριστῷ (Christ), ἐγείρας (having raised) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead) καὶ (and) καθίσας (having set Him) ἐν (at) δεξιᾷ (the right hand) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ἐπουρανίοις (heavenly realms), ²¹ ὑπεράνω (above) πάσης (every) ἀρχῆς (principality) καὶ (and) ἐξουσίας (authority) καὶ (and) δυνάμεως (power) καὶ (and) κυριότητος (dominion), καὶ (and) παντὸς (every) ὀνόματος (name) ὀνομαζομένου (being named), οὐ (not) μόνον (only) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) αἰῶνι (age) τούτῳ (this), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) ἐν (in) τῷ (the one) μέλλοντι (coming). ²² καὶ (And) πάντα (all things) ὑπέταξεν (He put) ὑπὸ (under) τοὺς (the) πόδας (feet) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) αὐτὸν (Him) ἔδωκεν (gave) κεφαλὴν (to be head) ὑπὲρ (over) πάντα (all things) τῇ (to the) ἐκκλησίᾳ (church), ²³ ἥτις (which) ἐστὶν (is) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body) αὐτοῦ (of Him), τὸ (the) πλήρωμα (fullness) τοῦ (of the One) τὰ (-) πάντα (all) ἐν (in) πᾶσιν (all) πληρουμένου (filling).

⁹ Διὸ (Therefore) καὶ (also) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) αὐτὸν (Him) ὑπερύψωσεν (highly exalted), καὶ (and) ἐχαρίσατο (granted) αὐτῷ (to Him) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) τὸ (-) ὑπὲρ (above) πᾶν (every) ὄνομα (name), ¹⁰ ἵνα (that) ἐν (at) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) πᾶν (every) γόνυ (knee) κάμψῃ (should bow), ἐπουρανίων (in the heavens) καὶ (and) ἐπιγείων (on earth) καὶ (and) καταχθονίων (under the earth), ¹¹ καὶ (and) πᾶσα (every) γλῶσσα (tongue) ἐξομολογήσηται (should confess) ὅτι (that) ΚΥΡΙΟΣ (is Lord) ΙΗΣΟΥΣ (Jesus) ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ (Christ), εἰς (to) δόξαν (the glory) Θεοῦ (of God) Πατρός (the Father).

¹ Διαμαρτύρομαι (I earnestly declare) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) καὶ (and) Χριστοῦ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), τοῦ (the One) μέλλοντος (being about) κρίνειν (to judge) ζῶντας (the living) καὶ (and) νεκρούς (the dead), καὶ (and) τὴν (by the) ἐπιφάνειαν (appearing) αὐτοῦ (of Him) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) αὐτοῦ (of Him):

² ἀφορῶντες (looking) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) τῆς (of our) πίστεως (faith) ἀρχηγὸν (founder) καὶ (and) τελειωτὴν (perfecter), Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), ὃς (who) ἀντὶ (in view of) τῆς (the) προκειμένης (lying before) αὐτῷ (Him) χαρᾶς (joy), ὑπέμεινεν (endured) σταυρὸν (the cross), αἰσχύνης (its shame) καταφρονήσας (having despised), ἐν (at) δεξιᾷ (right hand) τε (and) τοῦ (of the) θρόνου (throne) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) κεκάθικεν (sat down).

²¹ τοὺς (who) δι’ (by) αὐτοῦ (Him) πιστοὺς (believe) εἰς (in) Θεὸν (God), τὸν (the one) ἐγείραντα (having raised up) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead) καὶ (and) δόξαν (glory) αὐτῷ (Him) δόντα (having given), ὥστε (so as for) τὴν (the) πίστιν (faith) ὑμῶν (of you), καὶ (and) ἐλπίδα (hope), εἶναι (to be) εἰς (in) Θεόν (God).

⁵ οἳ (who) ἀποδώσουσιν (will give) λόγον (account) τῷ (to Him who) ἑτοίμως (ready) ἔχοντι (is) κρῖναι (to judge) ζῶντας (the living) καὶ (and) νεκρούς (the dead).

¹⁸ καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Ζῶν (Living One); καὶ (and) ἐγενόμην (I was) νεκρὸς (dead), καὶ (and) ἰδοὺ (behold) ζῶν (living) εἰμι (I am) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (ages) τῶν (of the) αἰώνων (ages), καὶ (and) ἔχω (I have) τὰς (the) κλεῖς (keys) τοῦ (of) θανάτου (Death) καὶ (and) τοῦ (of) ᾅδου (Hades).

⁸ Καὶ (And) τῷ (to the) ἀγγέλῳ (messenger) τῆς (of) ἐν (in) Σμύρνῃ (Smyrna) ἐκκλησίας (the church) γράψον (write): Τάδε (These things) λέγει (says) ὁ (the) πρῶτος (First) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) ἔσχατος (Last), ὃς (who) ἐγένετο (became) νεκρὸς (dead) καὶ (and) ἔζησεν (came to life).

³¹ Ὅταν (When) δὲ (then) ἔλθῃ (comes) ὁ (the) υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) δόξῃ (glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) πάντες (all) οἱ (the) ἄγγελοι (angels) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (Him), τότε (then) καθίσει (He will sit) ἐπὶ (upon the) θρόνου (throne) δόξης (of glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him). ³² καὶ (And) συναχθήσονται (will be gathered) ἔμπροσθεν (before) αὐτοῦ (Him) πάντα (all) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (nations), καὶ (and) ἀφορίσει (He will separate) αὐτοὺς (them) ἀπ’ (from) ἀλλήλων (one another), ὥσπερ (as) ὁ (the) ποιμὴν (shepherd) ἀφορίζει (separates) τὰ (the) πρόβατα (sheep) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) ἐρίφων (goats).

¹¹ ἐξουθενήσας (Having set at naught) δὲ (then) αὐτὸν (Him), ‹καὶ› (also) ὁ (-) Ἡρῴδης (Herod) σὺν (with) τοῖς (the) στρατεύμασιν (troops) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) ἐμπαίξας (having mocked Him), περιβαλὼν (having put on Him) ἐσθῆτα (apparel) λαμπρὰν (splendid), ἀνέπεμψεν (sent back) αὐτὸν (him) τῷ (to) Πιλάτῳ (Pilate).

²² οὐδὲ (Not even) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) κρίνει (judges) οὐδένα (no one), ἀλλὰ (but) τὴν (-) κρίσιν (judgment) πᾶσαν (all) δέδωκεν (has given) τῷ (to the) Υἱῷ (Son),

¹¹ οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ‘Ὁ (the) λίθος (stone) ὁ (-) ἐξουθενηθεὶς (having been rejected) ὑφ’ (by) ὑμῶν (you), τῶν (the) οἰκοδόμων (builders), ὁ (which) γενόμενος (has become) εἰς (into) κεφαλὴν (head) γωνίας (of the corner).’

³¹ καθότι (because) ἔστησεν (He set) ἡμέραν (a day) ἐν (in) ᾗ (which) μέλλει (He is about) κρίνειν (to judge) τὴν (the) οἰκουμένην (world) ἐν (in) δικαιοσύνῃ (righteousness), ἐν (by) ἀνδρὶ (a man) ᾧ (whom) ὥρισεν (He appointed), πίστιν (a guarantee) παρασχὼν (having provided) πᾶσιν (to all), ἀναστήσας (having raised) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead).”

¹⁶ ἐν (on) 〈ᾗ〉 (that) ἡμέρᾳ (day) ‹ὅτε› (when) κρίνει (will judge) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τὰ (the) κρυπτὰ (secrets) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (of men), κατὰ (according to) τὸ (the) εὐαγγέλιόν (gospel) μου (of me), διὰ (by) Χριστοῦ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).

³ ὁ (The one) ἐσθίων (eating), τὸν (the one) μὴ (not) ἐσθίοντα (eating) μὴ (not) ἐξουθενείτω (let him despise); ὁ (the one) δὲ (now) μὴ (not) ἐσθίων (eating), τὸν (him) ἐσθίοντα (eating) μὴ (not) κρινέτω (let him judge), ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) γὰρ (for) αὐτὸν (him) προσελάβετο (has received). ⁴ σὺ (You) τίς (who) εἶ (are), ὁ (-) κρίνων (judging) ἀλλότριον (another’s) οἰκέτην (servant)? τῷ (To the) ἰδίῳ (own) κυρίῳ (master) στήκει (he stands) ἢ (or) πίπτει (falls). σταθήσεται (He will be upheld) δέ (however); δυνατεῖ (able is) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) στῆσαι (to uphold) αὐτόν (him).

⁵ Ὥστε (So then), μὴ (not) πρὸ (before the) καιροῦ (time) τι (anything) κρίνετε (judge), ἕως (until) ἂν (-) ἔλθῃ (shall have come) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord), ὃς (who) καὶ (both) φωτίσει (will bring to light) τὰ (the) κρυπτὰ (hidden things) τοῦ (-) σκότους (of darkness), καὶ (and) φανερώσει (will make manifest) τὰς (the) βουλὰς (motives) τῶν (of the) καρδιῶν (hearts); καὶ (and) τότε (then) ὁ (the) ἔπαινος (praise) γενήσεται (will come) ἑκάστῳ (to each) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God).

¹⁰ τοὺς (-) γὰρ (For) πάντας (all) ἡμᾶς (of us) φανερωθῆναι (to be revealed) δεῖ (it behooves) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τοῦ (the) βήματος (judgment seat) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), ἵνα (that) κομίσηται (may receive back) ἕκαστος (each) τὰ (the things done) διὰ (in) τοῦ (the) σώματος (body), πρὸς (according to) ἃ (what) ἔπραξεν (he did), εἴτε (whether) ἀγαθὸν (good) εἴτε (or) φαῦλον (evil).

¹⁴ Προεφήτευσεν* (Prophesied) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) τούτοις (as to these) ἕβδομος (the seventh) ἀπὸ (from) Ἀδὰμ (Adam), Ἑνὼχ (Enoch), λέγων (saying): “Ἰδοὺ (Behold), ἦλθεν (has come) Κύριος (the Lord) ἐν (amidst) ἁγίαις (holy ones) μυριάσιν (myriads) αὐτοῦ (of His), ¹⁵ ποιῆσαι (to execute) κρίσιν (judgment) κατὰ (against) πάντων (all), καὶ (and) ἐλέγξαι (to convict) πάντας (all) τοὺς (the) ἀσεβεῖς (ungodly) περὶ (concerning) πάντων (all) τῶν (the) ἔργων (works) ἀσεβείας (of ungodliness) αὐτῶν (of them) ὧν (which) ἠσέβησαν (they have done in an ungodly way), καὶ (and) περὶ (concerning) πάντων (all) τῶν (the) σκληρῶν (harsh things) ὧν (that) ἐλάλησαν (have spoken) κατ’ (against) αὐτοῦ (Him) ἁμαρτωλοὶ (sinners) ἀσεβεῖς (ungodly).”

¹¹ Καὶ (And) εἶδον (I saw) θρόνον (a throne) μέγαν (great) λευκὸν (white), καὶ (and) τὸν (the One) καθήμενον (sitting) ἐπ’ (on) αὐτόν (it), οὗ (whose) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (-) προσώπου (face) ἔφυγεν (fled) ἡ (the) γῆ (earth) καὶ (and) ὁ (-) οὐρανός (heaven), καὶ (and) τόπος (place) οὐχ (not) εὑρέθη (was found) αὐτοῖς (for them). ¹² καὶ (And) εἶδον (I saw) τοὺς (the) νεκρούς (dead), τοὺς (-) μεγάλους (great) καὶ (and) τοὺς (-) μικρούς (small), ἑστῶτας (standing) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (the) θρόνου (throne), καὶ (and) βιβλία (books) ἠνοίχθησαν (were opened). Καὶ (And) ἄλλο (another) βιβλίον (book) ἠνοίχθη (was opened), ὅ (which) ἐστιν (is) τῆς (the one) ζωῆς (of life). καὶ (And) ἐκρίθησαν (were judged) οἱ (the) νεκροὶ (dead) ἐκ (out of) τῶν (the things) γεγραμμένων (having been written) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) βιβλίοις (books), κατὰ (according to) τὰ (the) ἔργα (deeds) αὐτῶν (of them). ¹³ καὶ (And) ἔδωκεν (gave up) ἡ (the) θάλασσα (sea) τοὺς (the) νεκροὺς (dead) τοὺς (who were) ἐν (in) αὐτῇ (it); καὶ (and) ὁ (-) θάνατος (Death) καὶ (and) ὁ (-) ᾅδης (Hades) ἔδωκαν (gave up) τοὺς (the) νεκροὺς (dead) τοὺς (who were) ἐν (in) αὐτοῖς (them); καὶ (and) ἐκρίθησαν (they were judged) ἕκαστος (each of them) κατὰ (according to) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) αὐτῶν (of them). ¹⁴ Καὶ (And) ὁ (-) θάνατος (Death) καὶ (and) ὁ (-) ᾅδης (Hades) ἐβλήθησαν (were cast) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) λίμνην (lake) τοῦ (-) πυρός (of fire). οὗτος (This) ὁ (the) θάνατος (death) ὁ (-) δεύτερός (second) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) λίμνη (lake) τοῦ (of) πυρός (fire). ¹⁵ καὶ (And) εἴ (if) τις (anyone) οὐχ (not) εὑρέθη (was found) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βίβλῳ (book) τῆς (-) ζωῆς (of life) γεγραμμένος (having been written), ἐβλήθη (he was cast) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) λίμνην (lake) τοῦ (-) πυρός (of fire).

³² Πᾶς (Everyone) οὖν (therefore) ὅστις (who) ὁμολογήσει (will confess) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (men), ὁμολογήσω (will confess) κἀγὼ (also I) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of Me) τοῦ (who is) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) οὐρανοῖς (heavens).

⁹ ὅτι (that) ἐὰν (if) ὁμολογήσῃς (you confess) ἐν (with) τῷ (the) στόματί (mouth) σου (of you), “Κύριον (The Lord is) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus),” καὶ (and) πιστεύσῃς (believe) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) σου (of you), ὅτι (that) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) αὐτὸν (Him) ἤγειρεν (raised) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead), σωθήσῃ (you will be saved).

⁹ τὰ (-) δὲ (and for) ἔθνη (the Gentiles), ὑπὲρ (for) ἐλέους (mercy), δοξάσαι (to glorify) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God), καθὼς (as) γέγραπται (it has been written): “Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this) ἐξομολογήσομαί (I will praise) σοι (You) ἐν (among) ἔθνεσιν (the Gentiles), καὶ (and) τῷ (to the) ὀνόματί (name) σου (of You) ψαλῶ (will I sing).”

¹⁵ Ὃς (Whoever) ἐὰν (if) ὁμολογήσῃ (shall confess) ὅτι (that) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him) μένει (abides), καὶ (and) αὐτὸς (he) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God).

⁷ Ὅτι (For) πολλοὶ (many) πλάνοι (deceivers) ἐξῆλθον (have entered) εἰς (into) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), οἱ (those) μὴ (not) ὁμολογοῦντες (confessing) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) Χριστὸν (Christ) ἐρχόμενον (coming) ἐν (in) σαρκί (flesh). οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) πλάνος (deceiver) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) ἀντίχριστος (antichrist).

¹⁴ Καὶ (And) τὰ (the) τέσσαρα (four) ζῷα (living creatures) ἔλεγον (kept saying), “Ἀμήν (Amen).” καὶ (And) οἱ (the) πρεσβύτεροι (elders) ἔπεσαν (fell down) καὶ (and) προσεκύνησαν (worshiped).

³⁶ λέγω (I say) δὲ (now) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) πᾶν (every) ῥῆμα (word) ἀργὸν (careless) ὃ (that) λαλήσουσιν (will speak) οἱ (-) ἄνθρωποι (men), ἀποδώσουσιν (they will give) περὶ (of) αὐτοῦ (it) λόγον (an account) ἐν (in) ἡμέρᾳ (day) κρίσεως (of judgment).

²⁷ μέλλει (Is about) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (of the) ἀνθρώπου (man) ἔρχεσθαι (to come) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) δόξῃ (glory) τοῦ (the) Πατρὸς (Father) αὐτοῦ (of Him), μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) ἀγγέλων (angels) αὐτοῦ (of Him); καὶ (and) τότε (then) ἀποδώσει (He will give) ἑκάστῳ (to each) κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) πρᾶξιν (deeds) αὐτοῦ (of him).

²³ Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), ὡμοιώθη (has become like) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τῶν (of the) οὐρανῶν (heavens) ἀνθρώπῳ (to a man), βασιλεῖ (a king), ὃς (who) ἠθέλησεν (desired) συνᾶραι (to settle) λόγον (accounts) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) δούλων (servants) αὐτοῦ (of him). ²⁴ ἀρξαμένου (Having begun) δὲ (then) αὐτοῦ (he) συναίρειν (to settle), προσηνέχθη* (was brought) εἷς (one) αὐτῷ (to him), ὀφειλέτης (a debtor) μυρίων (of ten thousand) ταλάντων (talents). ²⁵ μὴ (Nothing) ἔχοντος (having) δὲ (now) αὐτοῦ (he) ἀποδοῦναι (to pay), ἐκέλευσεν (commanded) αὐτὸν (him) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) πραθῆναι (to be sold), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) γυναῖκα (wife) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children), καὶ (and) πάντα (all) ὅσα (as many as) ἔχει (he had), καὶ (and) ἀποδοθῆναι (payment to be made). ²⁶ Πεσὼν (Having fallen down) οὖν (therefore) ὁ (the) δοῦλος (servant) προσεκύνει (was bowing on his knees) αὐτῷ (to him), λέγων (saying), ‘Μακροθύμησον (Have patience) ἐπ’ (with) ἐμοί (me), καὶ (and) πάντα (all) ἀποδώσω (I will pay) σοι (to you).’ ²⁷ Σπλαγχνισθεὶς (Having been moved with compassion) δὲ (now), ὁ (the) κύριος (master) τοῦ (of the) δούλου (servant) ἐκείνου (that) ἀπέλυσεν (released) αὐτόν (him), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) δάνειον (debt) ἀφῆκεν (forgave) αὐτῷ (him). ²⁸ Ἐξελθὼν (Having gone out) δὲ (however), ὁ (the) δοῦλος (servant) ἐκεῖνος (same) εὗρεν (found) ἕνα (one) τῶν (the) συνδούλων (fellow servants) αὐτοῦ (of him) ὃς (who) ὤφειλεν (was owing) αὐτῷ (him) ἑκατὸν (a hundred) δηνάρια (denarii), καὶ (and) κρατήσας (having seized) αὐτὸν (him) ἔπνιγεν (he was throttling him), λέγων (saying), ‘Ἀπόδος (Pay) εἴ (if) τι (any) ὀφείλεις (you owe).’ ²⁹ Πεσὼν (Having fallen down) οὖν (therefore), ὁ (the) σύνδουλος (fellow servant) αὐτοῦ (of him) παρεκάλει (was begging) αὐτὸν (him), λέγων (saying), ‘Μακροθύμησον (Have patience) ἐπ’ (with) ἐμοί (me), καὶ (and) ἀποδώσω (I will pay) σοι (you).’ ³⁰ Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) οὐκ (not) ἤθελεν (he was willing), ἀλλὰ (rather) ἀπελθὼν (having gone), ἔβαλεν (he cast) αὐτὸν (him) εἰς (into) φυλακὴν (prison), ἕως (until) ‹οὗ› (that) ἀποδῷ (he should pay) τὸ (that which) ὀφειλόμενον (was owing). ³¹ Ἰδόντες (Having seen) οὖν (therefore) οἱ (the) σύνδουλοι (fellow servants) αὐτοῦ (of him) τὰ (the things) γενόμενα (having taken place), ἐλυπήθησαν (they were grieved) σφόδρα (deeply), καὶ (and) ἐλθόντες (having gone), διεσάφησαν (narrated) τῷ (to) κυρίῳ (master) ἑαυτῶν (of themselves) πάντα (all) τὰ (that) γενόμενα (having taken place). ³² Τότε (Then) προσκαλεσάμενος (having called to) αὐτὸν (him), ὁ (the) κύριος (master) αὐτοῦ (of him) λέγει (says) αὐτῷ (to him), ‘Δοῦλε (Servant) πονηρέ (evil), πᾶσαν (all) τὴν (the) ὀφειλὴν (debt) ἐκείνην (that) ἀφῆκά (I forgave) σοι (you), ἐπεὶ (because) παρεκάλεσάς (you begged) με (me). ³³ οὐκ (Not) ἔδει (did it behoove) καὶ (also) σὲ (you) ἐλεῆσαι (to have pitied) τὸν (the) σύνδουλόν (fellow servant) σου (of you), ὡς (as) κἀγὼ (also I) σὲ (you) ἠλέησα (had pitied)?’ ³⁴ καὶ (And) ὀργισθεὶς (having been angry), ὁ (the) κύριος (master) αὐτοῦ (of him) παρέδωκεν (delivered) αὐτὸν (him) τοῖς (to the) βασανισταῖς (jailers), ἕως (until) οὗ (that) ἀποδῷ (he should pay) πᾶν (all) τὸ (-) ὀφειλόμενον (being owed) 〈αὐτῷ〉 (to him). ³⁵ Οὕτως (Thus) καὶ (also) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father) μου (of Me) ὁ (-) οὐράνιος (Heavenly) ποιήσει (will do) ὑμῖν (to you), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) ἀφῆτε (you forgive) ἕκαστος (each) τῷ (the) ἀδελφῷ (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) καρδιῶν (heart) ὑμῶν (of you).”

² καὶ (And) φωνήσας (having called) αὐτὸν (him), εἶπεν (he said) αὐτῷ (to him), ‘Τί (What is) τοῦτο (this) ἀκούω (I hear) περὶ (concerning) σοῦ (you)? ἀπόδος (Give) τὸν (the) λόγον (account) τῆς (of the) οἰκονομίας (stewardship) σου (of you); οὐ (not) γὰρ (for) δύνῃ (you are able) ἔτι (any longer) οἰκονομεῖν (to manage).’

⁵ ἕκαστος (Each) γὰρ (for) τὸ (-) ἴδιον (his own) φορτίον (load) βαστάσει (shall bear).

¹ Μὴ (Not) κρίνετε (do judge), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) κριθῆτε (you should be judged).

²³ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) στραφεὶς (having turned) εἶπεν (He said) τῷ (-) Πέτρῳ (to Peter), “Ὕπαγε (Get) ὀπίσω (behind) μου (Me), Σατανᾶ (Satan)! σκάνδαλον (A stumbling block) εἶ (you are) ἐμοῦ (to Me). ὅτι (For) οὐ (not) φρονεῖς (your thoughts are of) τὰ (the things) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἀλλὰ (but) τὰ (the) τῶν (things) ἀνθρώπων (of men).”

⁷ Οὐαὶ (Woe) τῷ (to the) κόσμῳ (world) ἀπὸ (because of) τῶν (the) σκανδάλων (causes of sin). ἀνάγκη (Necessary are) γὰρ (for) ἐλθεῖν (to come) τὰ (the) σκάνδαλα (stumbling blocks), πλὴν (but) οὐαὶ (woe) τῷ (to the) ἀνθρώπῳ (man) δι’ (by) οὗ (whom) τὸ (the) σκάνδαλον (offense) ἔρχεται (comes)!

⁵⁷ Τί (Why) δὲ (now) καὶ (even) ἀφ’ (for) ἑαυτῶν (yourselves) οὐ (not) κρίνετε (judge you) τὸ (what is) δίκαιον (right)?

³² διὰ (Because of) τί (why)? ὅτι (Because it was) οὐκ (not) ἐκ (by) πίστεως (faith), ἀλλ’ (but) ὡς (as) ἐξ (by) ἔργων (works). προσέκοψαν (They stumbled) τῷ (over the) λίθῳ (stone) τοῦ (-) προσκόμματος (of stumbling), ³³ καθὼς (as) γέγραπται (it has been written): “Ἰδοὺ (Behold) τίθημι (I lay) ἐν (in) Σιὼν (Zion) λίθον (a stone) προσκόμματος (of stumbling), καὶ (and) πέτραν (a rock) σκανδάλου (of offense); καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) πιστεύων (believing) ἐπ’ (on) αὐτῷ (Him), οὐ (never) καταισχυνθήσεται (will be put to shame).”

⁹ Καὶ (And) Δαυὶδ (David) λέγει (says): “Γενηθήτω (Let be) ἡ (the) τράπεζα (table) αὐτῶν (of them) εἰς (for) παγίδα (a snare) καὶ (and) εἰς (for) θήραν (a trap), καὶ (and) εἰς (for) σκάνδαλον (a stumbling block) καὶ (and) εἰς (for) ἀνταπόδομα (a retribution) αὐτοῖς (to them);

¹⁷ Παρακαλῶ (I exhort) δὲ (now) ὑμᾶς (you), ἀδελφοί (brothers), σκοπεῖν (to watch out for) τοὺς (those) τὰς (-) διχοστασίας (divisions) καὶ (and) τὰ (-) σκάνδαλα (obstacles) παρὰ (contrary to) τὴν (the) διδαχὴν (teaching) ἣν (that) ὑμεῖς (you) ἐμάθετε (have learned) ποιοῦντας (causing), καὶ (and) ἐκκλίνετε (turn away) ἀπ’ (from) αὐτῶν (them).

³² ἀπρόσκοποι (Without offense) καὶ (both) Ἰουδαίοις (to Jews) γίνεσθε (be you), καὶ (and) Ἕλλησιν (Greeks), καὶ (and) τῇ (to the) ἐκκλησίᾳ (church) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) —

¹³ Ἐν (In) ὑμῖν (you) αὐτοῖς (yourselves) κρίνατε (judge): πρέπον (Becoming) ἐστὶν (is it) γυναῖκα (for a woman) ἀκατακάλυπτον (revealed), τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God) προσεύχεσθαι (to pray)?

¹⁴ Βούλομαι (I want) οὖν (therefore) νεωτέρας (the younger ones) γαμεῖν (to marry), τεκνογονεῖν (to bear children), οἰκοδεσποτεῖν (to manage their households), μηδεμίαν (no) ἀφορμὴν (occasion) διδόναι (to give) τῷ (the one) ἀντικειμένῳ (opposing) λοιδορίας (of reproach) χάριν (on account).

⁴ [καὶ] (then) οὐ (not) διεκρίθητε (have you made a distinction) ἐν (among) ἑαυτοῖς (yourselves) καὶ (and) ἐγένεσθε (have become) κριταὶ (judges with) διαλογισμῶν (thoughts) πονηρῶν (evil)?

¹¹ Μὴ (Not) καταλαλεῖτε (speak against) ἀλλήλων (one another), ἀδελφοί (brothers). ὁ (The one) καταλαλῶν (speaking against) ἀδελφοῦ (his brother) ἢ (or) κρίνων (judging) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), καταλαλεῖ (speaks against) νόμου (the Law) καὶ (and) κρίνει (judges) νόμον (the Law). εἰ (If) δὲ (however) νόμον (the Law) κρίνεις (you judge), οὐκ (not) εἶ (you are) ποιητὴς (a doer) νόμου (of the Law), ἀλλὰ (but) κριτής (a judge).

¹⁰ ὁ (The one) ἀγαπῶν (loving) τὸν (the) ἀδελφὸν (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἐν (in) τῷ (the) φωτὶ (light) μένει (abides), καὶ (and) σκάνδαλον (cause for stumbling) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (there is).

¹⁴ Ἀλλ’ (But) ἔχω (I have) κατὰ (against) σοῦ (you) ὀλίγα (a few things), ὅτι (because) ἔχεις (you have) ἐκεῖ (some there) κρατοῦντας (holding) τὴν (the) διδαχὴν (teaching) Βαλαάμ (of Balaam), ὃς (who) ἐδίδασκεν (would teach) τῷ (-) Βαλὰκ (Balak) βαλεῖν (to cast) σκάνδαλον (a snare) ἐνώπιον (before) τῶν (the) υἱῶν (sons) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel), φαγεῖν (to eat) εἰδωλόθυτα (things sacrificed to idols), καὶ (and) πορνεῦσαι (to commit sexual immorality).

¹⁴ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Πέτρος (Peter) εἶπεν (said), “Μηδαμῶς (In no way), Κύριε (Lord); ὅτι (for) οὐδέποτε (never) ἔφαγον (have I eaten) πᾶν (anything) κοινὸν (common) καὶ (or) ἀκάθαρτον (unclean).” ¹⁵ Καὶ (And) φωνὴ (a voice) πάλιν (came again) ἐκ (for) δευτέρου (the second time) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (him): “Ἃ (What) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐκαθάρισεν (has cleansed), σὺ (you) μὴ (not) κοίνου (call common).”

²⁸ ἔφη (He was saying) τε (then) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Ὑμεῖς (You) ἐπίστασθε (know) ὡς (how) ἀθέμιτόν (unlawful) ἐστιν (it is) ἀνδρὶ (for a man) Ἰουδαίῳ (a Jew) κολλᾶσθαι (to unite himself) ἢ (or) προσέρχεσθαι (to come near) ἀλλοφύλῳ (to a foreigner). κἀμοὶ (To me) ὁ (however) Θεὸς (God) ἔδειξεν (has shown), μηδένα (not) κοινὸν (common) ἢ (or) ἀκάθαρτον (unclean) λέγειν (to call) ἄνθρωπον (man).

⁸ Εἶπον (I said) δέ (however), ‘Μηδαμῶς (In no way), Κύριε (Lord), ὅτι (for) κοινὸν (common) ἢ (or) ἀκάθαρτον (unclean) οὐδέποτε (nothing ever) εἰσῆλθεν (has entered) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth) μου (of me).’ ⁹ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) δὲ (however) «ἐκ (for) δευτέρου» (a second time) φωνὴ (the voice) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (-) οὐρανοῦ (heaven), ‘Ἃ (What) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐκαθάρισεν (has cleansed), σὺ (you) μὴ (not) κοίνου (do call unholy).’

² ὃς (One) μὲν (indeed) πιστεύει (believes) φαγεῖν (to eat) πάντα (all things); ὁ (the one) δὲ (however) ἀσθενῶν (being weak), λάχανα (vegetables) ἐσθίει (eats).

²⁰ μὴ (Not) ἕνεκεν (for the sake of) βρώματος (food), κατάλυε (destroy) τὸ (the) ἔργον (work) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God). πάντα (All things) μὲν (indeed are) καθαρά (clean), ἀλλὰ (but) κακὸν (it is wrong) τῷ (to the) ἀνθρώπῳ (man) τῷ (-) διὰ (through) προσκόμματος (a stumbling block) ἐσθίοντι (eating).

¹⁰ ἐὰν (If) γάρ (for) τις (anyone) ἴδῃ (sees) σὲ (you), τὸν (-) ἔχοντα (having) γνῶσιν (knowledge), ἐν (in) εἰδωλείῳ (an idol’s temple) κατακείμενον (eating), οὐχὶ (not) ἡ (the) συνείδησις (conscience) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἀσθενοῦς (weak) ὄντος (being), οἰκοδομηθήσεται (will be built up), εἰς (so as) τὸ (the) τὰ (things) εἰδωλόθυτα (sacrificed to idols) ἐσθίειν (to eat)?

¹⁰ ἡ (-) ἀγάπη (Love) τῷ (to the) πλησίον (neighbor) κακὸν (evil) οὐκ (not) ἐργάζεται (does do); πλήρωμα (the fulfillment) οὖν (therefore) νόμου (of the law) ἡ (-) ἀγάπη (love is).

² ἕκαστος (Each) ἡμῶν (of us) τῷ (the) πλησίον (neighbor) ἀρεσκέτω (let please), εἰς (unto) τὸ (the) ἀγαθὸν (good), πρὸς (for) οἰκοδομήν (edification).

¹ Περὶ (Concerning) δὲ (now) τῶν (the things) εἰδωλοθύτων (sacrificed to idols), οἴδαμεν (we know) ὅτι (indeed) πάντες (all) γνῶσιν (knowledge) ἔχομεν (we have). ἡ (-) γνῶσις (Knowledge) φυσιοῖ (puffs up), ἡ (-) δὲ (but) ἀγάπη (love) οἰκοδομεῖ (builds up).

¹¹ ἀπόλλυται (Is destroyed) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the one) ἀσθενῶν (being weak) ἐν (through) τῇ (-) σῇ (your) γνώσει (knowledge), ὁ (the) ἀδελφὸς (brother) δι’ (for) ὃν (whom) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἀπέθανεν (died). ¹² οὕτως (Thus) δὲ (then) ἁμαρτάνοντες (sinning) εἰς (against) τοὺς (the) ἀδελφοὺς (brothers) καὶ (and) τύπτοντες (wounding) αὐτῶν (their) τὴν (-) συνείδησιν (conscience) ἀσθενοῦσαν (being weak), εἰς (against) Χριστὸν (Christ) ἁμαρτάνετε (you sin).

⁴ Ἡ (-) ἀγάπη (Love) μακροθυμεῖ (is patient), χρηστεύεται (is kind); ἡ (-) ἀγάπη (love) οὐ (not) ζηλοῖ (is envious); ἡ (-) ἀγάπη (love) οὐ (not) περπερεύεται (is boastful), οὐ (not) φυσιοῦται (is puffed up), ⁵ οὐκ (not) ἀσχημονεῖ (acts unbecomingly); οὐ (not) ζητεῖ (seeks) τὰ (the things) ἑαυτῆς (of its own), οὐ (not) παροξύνεται (is easily provoked), οὐ (not) λογίζεται (it keeps account) τὸ (-) κακόν (of wrongs);

¹³ Ὑμεῖς (You) γὰρ (for) ἐπ’ (to) ἐλευθερίᾳ (freedom) ἐκλήθητε (were called), ἀδελφοί (brothers); μόνον (but) μὴ (not) τὴν (the) ἐλευθερίαν (freedom) εἰς (for) ἀφορμὴν (an opportunity) τῇ (to the) σαρκί (flesh). ἀλλὰ (Rather) διὰ (through) τῆς (-) ἀγάπης (love), δουλεύετε (serve) ἀλλήλοις (one another).

² καὶ (and) περιπατεῖτε (walk) ἐν (in) ἀγάπῃ (love), καθὼς (just as) καὶ (also) ὁ (-) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἠγάπησεν (loved) ἡμᾶς* (us) καὶ (and) παρέδωκεν (gave up) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us) προσφορὰν (as an offering) καὶ (and) θυσίαν (a sacrifice) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), εἰς (into) ὀσμὴν (an aroma) εὐωδίας (of a sweet smell).

² πληρώσατέ (fulfill) μου (my) τὴν (-) χαρὰν (joy) ἵνα (so that) τὸ (the) αὐτὸ (same) φρονῆτε (you may be minded), τὴν (the) αὐτὴν (same) ἀγάπην (love) ἔχοντες (having), σύμψυχοι (united in soul), τὸ (the) ἓν (same thing) φρονοῦντες (minding), ³ μηδὲν (nothing) κατ’ (according to) ἐριθείαν (self-interest) μηδὲ (or) κατὰ (according to) κενοδοξίαν (vain conceit), ἀλλὰ (but) τῇ (-) ταπεινοφροσύνῃ (in humility) ἀλλήλους (one another) ἡγούμενοι (be esteeming) ὑπερέχοντας (surpassing) ἑαυτῶν (themselves), ⁴ μὴ (not) τὰ (the things) ἑαυτῶν (of themselves) ἕκαστοι (each) σκοποῦντες (considering), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) τὰ (the things) ἑτέρων (of others) ἕκαστοι (each).

¹ Ἐγένοντο (There were) δὲ (however) καὶ (also) ψευδοπροφῆται (false prophets) ἐν (among) τῷ (the) λαῷ (people), ὡς (as) καὶ (also) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) ἔσονται (there will be) ψευδοδιδάσκαλοι (false teachers), οἵτινες (who) παρεισάξουσιν (will stealthily introduce) αἱρέσεις (heresies) ἀπωλείας (destructive), καὶ (even) τὸν (the) ἀγοράσαντα (having bought) αὐτοὺς (them) δεσπότην (Master) ἀρνούμενοι (denying), ἐπάγοντες (bringing upon) ἑαυτοῖς (themselves) ταχινὴν (swift) ἀπώλειαν (destruction). ² καὶ (And) αὐτὸς (He) ἱλασμός (the propitiation) ἐστιν (is) περὶ (for) τῶν (the) ἁμαρτιῶν (sins) ἡμῶν (of us); οὐ (not) περὶ (for) τῶν (the) ἡμετέρων (of ours) δὲ (and) μόνον (only), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) περὶ (for) ὅλου (all) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world).

¹⁷ μηδενὶ (To no one) κακὸν (evil) ἀντὶ (for) κακοῦ (evil) ἀποδιδόντες (repaying), προνοούμενοι (providing) καλὰ (right) ἐνώπιον (before) πάντων (all) ἀνθρώπων (men);

²⁰ στελλόμενοι (avoiding) τοῦτο (this), μή (lest) τις (anyone) ἡμᾶς (us) μωμήσηται (should blame) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἁδρότητι (abundance) ταύτῃ (this) τῇ (-) διακονουμένῃ (being administered) ὑφ’ (by) ἡμῶν (us). ²¹ προνοοῦμεν (We are taking great care to do) γὰρ (for) καλὰ (what is right), οὐ (not) μόνον (only) ἐνώπιον (before) Κυρίου (the Lord), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) ἐνώπιον (before) ἀνθρώπων (men).

³³ ζητεῖτε (Seek) δὲ (however) πρῶτον (first) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) [τοῦ (of) θεοῦ] (God) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) ταῦτα (these things) πάντα (all) προστεθήσεται (will be added) ὑμῖν (to you).

¹⁵ Ἀκούσας (Having heard) δέ (then) τις (one) τῶν (of those) συνανακειμένων (reclining with Him) ταῦτα (these things), εἶπεν (he said) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Μακάριος (Blessed is he) ὅστις (who) φάγεται (will eat) ἄρτον (bread) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).”

²⁰ Ἐπερωτηθεὶς (Having been asked) δὲ (now) ὑπὸ (by) τῶν (the) Φαρισαίων (Pharisees) πότε (when) ἔρχεται (is coming) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἀπεκρίθη (He answered) αὐτοῖς (them) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said), “Οὐκ (Not) ἔρχεται (comes) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) μετὰ (with) παρατηρήσεως (careful observation), ²¹ οὐδὲ (nor) ἐροῦσιν (will they say), ‘Ἰδοὺ (Behold) ὧδε (here),’ ἤ (or) ‘Ἐκεῖ (There).’ ἰδοὺ (Behold) γὰρ (for), ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐντὸς (in the midst) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐστιν (is).”

³ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly) λέγω (I say) σοι (to you), ἐὰν (if) μή (not) τις (anyone) γεννηθῇ (be born) ἄνωθεν (from above), οὐ (not) δύναται (he is able) ἰδεῖν (to see) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).”

⁵ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly), λέγω (I say) σοι (to you), ἐὰν (if) μή (not) τις (anyone) γεννηθῇ (be born) ἐξ (of) ὕδατος (water) καὶ (and) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit), οὐ (not) δύναται (he is able) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

³³ ταῦτα (These things) λελάληκα (I have spoken) ὑμῖν (to you) ἵνα (so that) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me) εἰρήνην (peace) ἔχητε (you may have). ἐν (In) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world) θλῖψιν (tribulation) ἔχετε (you have). ἀλλὰ (But) θαρσεῖτε (take courage); ἐγὼ (I) νενίκηκα (have overcome) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world).”

³¹ Ἡ (The) μὲν (indeed) οὖν (then) ἐκκλησία (church) καθ’ (throughout) ὅλης (all) τῆς (-) Ἰουδαίας (of Judea), καὶ (and) Γαλιλαίας (Galilee), καὶ (and) Σαμαρείας (Samaria), εἶχεν (had) εἰρήνην (peace), οἰκοδομουμένη (being edified) καὶ (and) πορευομένη (going on) τῷ (in the) φόβῳ (fear) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord); καὶ (and) τῇ (in the) παρακλήσει (comfort) τοῦ (of the) Ἁγίου (Holy) Πνεύματος (Spirit) ἐπληθύνετο (they were multiplied).

¹ Δικαιωθέντες (Having been justified) οὖν (therefore) ἐκ (by) πίστεως (faith), εἰρήνην (peace) ἔχομεν* (we have) πρὸς (with) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God), διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), ² δι’ (through) οὗ (whom) καὶ (also) τὴν (-) προσαγωγὴν (access) ἐσχήκαμεν (we have) τῇ (by the) πίστει (faith) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) χάριν (grace) ταύτην (this) ἐν (in) ᾗ (which) ἑστήκαμεν (we stand); καὶ (and) καυχώμεθα (we boast) ἐπ’ (in) ἐλπίδι (hope) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God). ³ Οὐ (Not) μόνον (only so) δέ (now), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) καυχώμεθα (we glory) ἐν (in) ταῖς (-) θλίψεσιν (tribulations), εἰδότες (knowing) ὅτι (that) ἡ (-) θλῖψις (tribulation), ὑπομονὴν (perseverance) κατεργάζεται (produces); ⁴ ἡ (-) δὲ (And) ὑπομονὴ (perseverance), δοκιμήν (character); ἡ (-) δὲ (and) δοκιμὴ (character), ἐλπίδα (hope). ⁵ ἡ (-) δὲ (And) ἐλπὶς (hope) οὐ (not) καταισχύνει (does make us ashamed), ὅτι (because) ἡ (the) ἀγάπη (love) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐκκέχυται (has been poured out) ἐν (into) ταῖς (the) καρδίαις (hearts) ἡμῶν (of us) διὰ (through) Πνεύματος (the Spirit) Ἁγίου (Holy), τοῦ (the One) δοθέντος (having been given) ἡμῖν (to us).

⁹ Ἢ (Or) οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (know you) ὅτι (that) ἄδικοι (the unrighteous ones) Θεοῦ (of God) βασιλείαν (the kingdom) οὐ (not) κληρονομήσουσιν (will inherit)? μὴ (Not) πλανᾶσθε (be deceived): οὔτε (neither) πόρνοι (the sexually immoral), οὔτε (nor) εἰδωλολάτραι (idolaters), οὔτε (nor) μοιχοὶ (adulterers), οὔτε (nor) μαλακοὶ (effeminate), οὔτε (nor) ἀρσενοκοῖται (homosexuals),

⁸ βρῶμα (Food) δὲ (however) ἡμᾶς (us) οὐ (not) παραστήσει (will commend) τῷ (to) Θεῷ (God); οὔτε (neither) ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) φάγωμεν (we should eat) ὑστερούμεθα (do we come short), οὔτε (nor) ἐὰν (if) ‹μὴ› (not) φάγωμεν (we should eat) περισσεύομεν (have we an advantage).

⁹ καὶ (and) εὑρεθῶ (be found) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him), μὴ (not) ἔχων (having) ἐμὴν (my own) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness), τὴν (which is) ἐκ (of) νόμου (the Law), ἀλλὰ (but) τὴν (that) διὰ (through) πίστεως (faith) Χριστοῦ (from Christ), τὴν (the) ἐκ (of) Θεοῦ (God) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness) ἐπὶ (on the basis of) τῇ (-) πίστει (faith),

⁴ Χαίρετε (Rejoice) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord) πάντοτε (always); πάλιν (again) ἐρῶ (I will say), χαίρετε (rejoice)!

⁷ καὶ (And) ἡ (the) εἰρήνη (peace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἡ (-) ὑπερέχουσα (surpassing) πάντα (all) νοῦν (understanding) φρουρήσει (will guard) τὰς (the) καρδίας (hearts) ὑμῶν (of you) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) νοήματα (minds) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).

¹¹ ἐν (with) πάσῃ (all) δυνάμει (power) δυναμούμενοι (being strengthened) κατὰ (according to) τὸ (the) κράτος (might) τῆς (-) δόξης (glorious) αὐτοῦ (of Him) εἰς (unto) πᾶσαν (all) ὑπομονὴν (endurance) καὶ (and) μακροθυμίαν (patience) μετὰ (with) χαρᾶς (joy),

³⁴ Ὡς (It is like) ἄνθρωπος (a man) ἀπόδημος (going on a journey), ἀφεὶς (having left) τὴν (the) οἰκίαν (house) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) δοὺς (having given) τοῖς (the) δούλοις (servants) αὐτοῦ (of him) τὴν (-) ἐξουσίαν (authority), ἑκάστῳ (to each one) τὸ (the) ἔργον (work) αὐτοῦ (of him). καὶ (And) τῷ (the) θυρωρῷ (doorkeeper) ἐνετείλατο (he commanded) ἵνα (that) γρηγορῇ (he should keep watch).

²⁶ ἐὰν (If) ἐμοί (Me) τις (anyone) διακονῇ (serves), ἐμοὶ (Me) ἀκολουθείτω (let him follow); καὶ (and) ὅπου (where) εἰμὶ (am) ἐγὼ (I), ἐκεῖ (there) καὶ (also) ὁ (the) διάκονος (servant) ὁ (-) ἐμὸς (of Me) ἔσται (will be). ἐάν (If) τις (anyone) ἐμοὶ (Me) διακονῇ (serves), τιμήσει (will honor) αὐτὸν (him) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father).

¹⁸ οἱ (-) γὰρ (For) τοιοῦτοι (such) τῷ (the) Κυρίῳ (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Χριστῷ (Christ) οὐ (not) δουλεύουσιν (serve), ἀλλὰ (but) τῇ (the) ἑαυτῶν (of themselves) κοιλίᾳ (belly); καὶ (and) διὰ (by) τῆς (-) χρηστολογίας (smooth talk) καὶ (and) εὐλογίας (flattery) ἐξαπατῶσιν (they deceive) τὰς (the) καρδίας (hearts) τῶν (of the) ἀκάκων (naive).

² ἀλλὰ (But) ἀπειπάμεθα (we have renounced) τὰ (the) κρυπτὰ (hidden things) τῆς (-) αἰσχύνης (of shame), μὴ (not) περιπατοῦντες (walking) ἐν (in) πανουργίᾳ (craftiness) μηδὲ (nor) δολοῦντες (falsifying) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἀλλὰ (but) τῇ (-) φανερώσει (by manifestation) τῆς (of the) ἀληθείας (truth) συνιστάνοντες (commending) ἑαυτοὺς (ourselves) πρὸς (to) πᾶσαν (every) συνείδησιν (conscience) ἀνθρώπων (of men) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God).

¹¹ Εἰδότες (Knowing) οὖν (therefore) τὸν (the) φόβον (fear) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord), ἀνθρώπους (men) πείθομεν (we persuade) Θεῷ (to God) δὲ (and) πεφανερώμεθα (we have been made manifest); ἐλπίζω (I hope) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) συνειδήσεσιν (consciences) ὑμῶν (of you) πεφανερῶσθαι (to have been made manifest).

⁴ ἀλλ’ (rather), ἐν (in) παντὶ (everything), συνιστάνοντες (we are commending) ἑαυτοὺς (ourselves) ὡς (as) Θεοῦ (God’s) διάκονοι (servants), ἐν (in) ὑπομονῇ (endurance) πολλῇ (great), ἐν (in) θλίψεσιν (tribulations), ἐν (in) ἀνάγκαις (hardships), ἐν (in) στενοχωρίαις (distresses),

²¹ προνοοῦμεν (We are taking great care to do) γὰρ (for) καλὰ (what is right), οὐ (not) μόνον (only) ἐνώπιον (before) Κυρίου (the Lord), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) ἐνώπιον (before) ἀνθρώπων (men).

¹⁵ οὔτε (Neither) γὰρ (for) περιτομή (circumcision) τί (anything) ἐστιν (is), οὔτε (nor) ἀκροβυστία (uncircumcision); ἀλλὰ (instead) καινὴ (a new) κτίσις (creation). ¹⁶ Καὶ (And) ὅσοι (as many as) τῷ (those who) κανόνι (rule) τούτῳ (by this) στοιχήσουσιν (will walk), εἰρήνη (peace be) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτοὺς (them), καὶ (and) ἔλεος (mercy); καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (upon) τὸν (the) Ἰσραὴλ (Israel) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

¹⁸ ἀπέχω (I have) δὲ (however) πάντα (all things) καὶ (and) περισσεύω (abound); πεπλήρωμαι (I am full), δεξάμενος (having received) παρὰ (from) Ἐπαφροδίτου (Epaphroditus) τὰ (the things) παρ’ (from) ὑμῶν (you), ὀσμὴν (an odor) εὐωδίας (of a sweet smell), θυσίαν (a sacrifice) δεκτήν (acceptable), εὐάρεστον (well-pleasing) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God).

²⁴ εἰδότες (knowing) ὅτι (that) ἀπὸ (from) Κυρίου (the Lord) ἀπολήμψεσθε (you will receive) τὴν (the) ἀνταπόδοσιν (reward) τῆς (of the) κληρονομίας (inheritance). τῷ (The) Κυρίῳ (Lord) Χριστῷ (Christ) δουλεύετε (you serve).

³ ἀδιαλείπτως (unceasingly) μνημονεύοντες (remembering) ὑμῶν (your) τοῦ (-) ἔργου (work) τῆς (-) πίστεως (of faith) καὶ (and) τοῦ (-) κόπου (labor) τῆς (-) ἀγάπης (of love), καὶ (and) τῆς (the) ὑπομονῆς (endurance) τῆς (of the) ἐλπίδος (hope) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), ἔμπροσθεν (before) τοῦ (the) Θεοῦ (God) καὶ (and) Πατρὸς (Father) ἡμῶν (of us), ⁴ εἰδότες (knowing), ἀδελφοὶ (brothers) ἠγαπημένοι (beloved) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God), τὴν (the) ἐκλογὴν (election) ὑμῶν (of you),

³ τοῦτο (This) καλὸν (is good) καὶ (and) ἀπόδεκτον (acceptable) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (the) Σωτῆρος (Savior) ἡμῶν (of us), Θεοῦ (God),

⁴ εἰ (If) δέ (however) τις (any) χήρα (widow), τέκνα (children) ἢ (or) ἔκγονα (grandchildren) ἔχει (has), μανθανέτωσαν (let them learn) πρῶτον (first) τὸν (to the) ἴδιον (own) οἶκον (household) εὐσεβεῖν (to be devout) καὶ (and) ἀμοιβὰς (recompense) ἀποδιδόναι (to give) τοῖς (to) προγόνοις (parents); τοῦτο (this) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is) ἀπόδεκτον (pleasing) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God).

¹¹ Ἐπεφάνη (Has appeared) γὰρ (for) ἡ (the) χάρις (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), σωτήριος (bringing salvation) πᾶσιν (to all) ἀνθρώποις (men), ¹² παιδεύουσα (instructing) ἡμᾶς (us) ἵνα (that), ἀρνησάμενοι (having denied) τὴν (-) ἀσέβειαν (ungodliness) καὶ (and) τὰς (-) κοσμικὰς (worldly) ἐπιθυμίας (passions), σωφρόνως (discreetly) καὶ (and) δικαίως (righteously) καὶ (and) εὐσεβῶς (piously) ζήσωμεν (we should live) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) νῦν (present) αἰῶνι (age), ¹³ προσδεχόμενοι (awaiting) τὴν (the) μακαρίαν (blessed) ἐλπίδα (hope) καὶ (and) ἐπιφάνειαν (the appearing) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) τοῦ (of the) μεγάλου (great) Θεοῦ (God) καὶ (and) Σωτῆρος (Savior) ἡμῶν (of us), Χριστοῦ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), ¹⁴ ὃς (who) ἔδωκεν (gave) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us), ἵνα (that) λυτρώσηται (He might redeem) ἡμᾶς (us) ἀπὸ (from) πάσης (all) ἀνομίας (lawlessness), καὶ (and) καθαρίσῃ (might purify) ἑαυτῷ (to Himself) λαὸν (a people) περιούσιον (specially chosen), ζηλωτὴν (zealous) καλῶν (of good) ἔργων (works).

¹⁸ Ἀλλ’ (But) ἐρεῖ (will say) τις (someone), “Σὺ (You) πίστιν (faith) ἔχεις (have), κἀγὼ (and I) ἔργα (works) ἔχω (have).” δεῖξόν (Show) μοι (me) τὴν (the) πίστιν (faith) σου (of you) χωρὶς (without) τῶν (-) ἔργων (works), κἀγώ (and I) σοι (you) δείξω (will show) ἐκ (by) τῶν (the) ἔργων (works) μου (of me), τὴν (-) πίστιν (faith). ¹⁹ σὺ (You) πιστεύεις (believe) ὅτι (that) εἷς (one) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (-) Θεός (God). καλῶς (Well) ποιεῖς (you are doing)! καὶ (Even) τὰ (the) δαιμόνια (demons) πιστεύουσιν (believe that), καὶ (and) φρίσσουσιν (shudder)! ²⁰ Θέλεις (Do you want) δὲ (however) γνῶναι (to come to know), ὦ (O) ἄνθρωπε (man) κενέ (foolish), ὅτι (that) ἡ (-) πίστις (faith) χωρὶς (apart from) τῶν (-) ἔργων (works) ἀργή (worthless) ἐστιν (is)? ²¹ Ἀβραὰμ (Abraham) ὁ (the) πατὴρ (father) ἡμῶν (of us), οὐκ (not) ἐξ (by) ἔργων (works) ἐδικαιώθη (was justified), ἀνενέγκας (having offered) Ἰσαὰκ (Isaac) τὸν (the) υἱὸν (son) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἐπὶ (upon) τὸ (the) θυσιαστήριον (altar)? ²² βλέπεις (You see) ὅτι (that) ἡ (his) πίστις (faith) συνήργει (was working with) τοῖς (the) ἔργοις (works) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) ἐκ (by) τῶν (his) ἔργων (works), ἡ (his) πίστις (faith) ἐτελειώθη (was perfected). ²³ καὶ (And) ἐπληρώθη (was fulfilled) ἡ (the) γραφὴ (Scripture) ἡ (-) λέγουσα (saying), “Ἐπίστευσεν (Believed) δὲ (then) Ἀβραὰμ (Abraham) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God), καὶ (and) ἐλογίσθη (it was counted) αὐτῷ (to him) εἰς (for) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness),” καὶ (and) φίλος (a friend) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐκλήθη (he was called). ²⁴ ὁρᾶτε (You see) ὅτι (that) ἐξ (by) ἔργων (works) δικαιοῦται (is justified) ἄνθρωπος (a man), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἐκ (by) πίστεως (faith) μόνον (alone). ²⁵ Ὁμοίως (Likewise) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) Ῥαὰβ (Rahab) ἡ (the) πόρνη (prostitute) οὐκ (not) ἐξ (by) ἔργων (works) ἐδικαιώθη (was justified), ὑποδεξαμένη (having received) τοὺς (the) ἀγγέλους (messengers) καὶ (and) ἑτέρᾳ (by another) ὁδῷ (way) ἐκβαλοῦσα (having sent them forth)? ²⁶ ὥσπερ (Just as) γὰρ (for) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body) χωρὶς (apart from) πνεύματος (spirit) νεκρόν (dead) ἐστιν (is), οὕτως (so) καὶ (also) ἡ (-) πίστις (faith) χωρὶς (apart from) ἔργων (works) νεκρά (dead) ἐστιν (is).

⁵ καὶ (also) αὐτοὶ (you yourselves) ὡς (as) λίθοι (stones) ζῶντες (living), οἰκοδομεῖσθε (are being built up) οἶκος (as a house) πνευματικὸς (spiritual) εἰς (into) ἱεράτευμα (a priesthood) ἅγιον (holy), ἀνενέγκαι (to offer) πνευματικὰς (spiritual) θυσίας (sacrifices) εὐπροσδέκτους (acceptable) [τῷ] (-) Θεῷ (to God) διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ).

²⁰ ποῖον (What kind of) γὰρ (for) κλέος (credit is it), εἰ (if) ἁμαρτάνοντες (sinning) καὶ (and) κολαφιζόμενοι (being struck) ὑπομενεῖτε (you shall endure)? ἀλλ’ (But) εἰ (if) ἀγαθοποιοῦντες (doing good) καὶ (and) πάσχοντες (suffering) ὑπομενεῖτε (you shall endure), τοῦτο (this is) χάρις (commendable) παρὰ (before) Θεῷ (God).

¹⁶ συνείδησιν (a conscience) ἔχοντες (having) ἀγαθήν (good), ἵνα (so that) ἐν (in) ᾧ (this) καταλαλεῖσθε (they might speak against you), καταισχυνθῶσιν (they shall be ashamed) οἱ (those) ἐπηρεάζοντες (reviling) ὑμῶν (your) τὴν (-) ἀγαθὴν (good) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) ἀναστροφήν (manner of life).

⁹ Μακάριοι (Blessed) οἱ (the) εἰρηνοποιοί (peacemakers), Ὅτι (for) αὐτοὶ (they) υἱοὶ (sons) Θεοῦ (of God) κληθήσονται (will be called).

⁵⁰ καλὸν (Good is) τὸ (the) ἅλας (salt); ἐὰν (if) δὲ (however) τὸ (the) ἅλας (salt) ἄναλον (unsalty) γένηται (becomes), ἐν (with) τίνι (what) αὐτὸ (it) ἀρτύσετε (will you season)? ἔχετε (Have) ἐν (in) ἑαυτοῖς (yourselves) ἅλα (salt), καὶ (and) εἰρηνεύετε (be at peace) ἐν (with) ἀλλήλοις (one another).”

³³ καθὼς (as) κἀγὼ (I also) πάντα (all) πᾶσιν (in all things) ἀρέσκω (please), μὴ (not) ζητῶν (seeking) τὸ (the) ἐμαυτοῦ (of myself) σύμφορον (profit), ἀλλὰ (but) τὸ (that) τῶν (of the) πολλῶν (many), ἵνα (that) σωθῶσιν (they may be saved).

¹² Οὕτως (So) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you), ἐπεὶ (since) ζηλωταί (zealous) ἐστε (you are) πνευμάτων (of spiritual gifts), πρὸς (for) τὴν (the) οἰκοδομὴν (edification) τῆς (of the) ἐκκλησίας (church), ζητεῖτε (search) ἵνα (that) περισσεύητε (you should cause it to abound). ¹³ Διὸ (Therefore) ὁ (the one) λαλῶν (speaking) γλώσσῃ (in a tongue), προσευχέσθω (let him pray) ἵνα (that) διερμηνεύῃ (he might interpret). ¹⁴ ἐὰν (If) γὰρ (for) προσεύχωμαι (I pray) γλώσσῃ (in a tongue), τὸ (the) πνεῦμά (spirit) μου (of me) προσεύχεται (prays), ὁ (-) δὲ (but) νοῦς (the mind) μου (of me) ἄκαρπός (unfruitful) ἐστιν (is). ¹⁵ Τί (What) οὖν (then) ἐστιν (is it)? προσεύξομαι (I will pray) τῷ (with the) πνεύματι (spirit), προσεύξομαι (I will pray) δὲ (however) καὶ (also) τῷ (with the) νοΐ (mind). ψαλῶ (I will sing praise) τῷ (with the) πνεύματι (spirit), ψαλῶ (I will sing praise) δὲ (however) καὶ (also) τῷ (with the) νοΐ (mind). ¹⁶ ἐπεὶ (Otherwise) ἐὰν (if) εὐλογῇς (you bless) [ἐν] (with the) πνεύματι (spirit), ὁ (the one) ἀναπληρῶν (filling) τὸν (the) τόπον (place) τοῦ (of the) ἰδιώτου (uninstructed), πῶς (how) ἐρεῖ (will he say) τὸ (the) “Ἀμήν (Amen)” ἐπὶ (at) τῇ (-) σῇ (your) εὐχαριστίᾳ (thanksgiving), ἐπειδὴ (since) τί (what) λέγεις (you say) οὐκ (not) οἶδεν (he knows)? ¹⁷ σὺ (You) μὲν (truly) γὰρ (for) καλῶς (well) εὐχαριστεῖς (are giving thanks), ἀλλ’ (but) ὁ (the) ἕτερος (other) οὐκ (not) οἰκοδομεῖται (is edified).

²⁶ Τί (What) οὖν (then) ἐστιν (is it), ἀδελφοί (brothers)? ὅταν (When) συνέρχησθε (you may come together), ἕκαστος (each) ψαλμὸν (a psalm) ἔχει (has), διδαχὴν (a teaching) ἔχει (has), ἀποκάλυψιν (a revelation) ἔχει (has), γλῶσσαν (a tongue) ἔχει (has), ἑρμηνείαν (an interpretation) ἔχει (has). πάντα (All things) πρὸς (for) οἰκοδομὴν (edification) γινέσθω (let be done).

¹⁹ Πάλαι (All along) δοκεῖτε (have you been thinking) ὅτι (that) ὑμῖν (to you) ἀπολογούμεθα (we have been making a defense)? κατέναντι (Before) Θεοῦ (God) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) λαλοῦμεν (we speak), τὰ (-) δὲ (but) πάντα (all things), ἀγαπητοί (beloved), ὑπὲρ (for) τῆς (-) ὑμῶν (your) οἰκοδομῆς (edification).

¹¹ Λοιπόν (Finally), ἀδελφοί (brothers), χαίρετε (rejoice)! καταρτίζεσθε (Be perfected), παρακαλεῖσθε (be exhorted), τὸ (be of the) αὐτὸ (same) φρονεῖτε (mind), εἰρηνεύετε (be at peace). καὶ (And) ὁ (the) Θεὸς (God) τῆς (-) ἀγάπης (of love) καὶ (and) εἰρήνης (peace) ἔσται (will be) μεθ’ (with) ὑμῶν (you).

³ σπουδάζοντες (being diligent) τηρεῖν (to keep) τὴν (the) ἑνότητα (unity) τοῦ (of the) Πνεύματος (Spirit) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) συνδέσμῳ (bond) τῆς (-) εἰρήνης (of peace); ⁴ ἓν (one) σῶμα (body) καὶ (and) ἓν (one) Πνεῦμα (Spirit), καθὼς (just as) καὶ (also) ἐκλήθητε (you were called) ἐν (into) μιᾷ (one) ἐλπίδι (hope) τῆς (of the) κλήσεως (calling) ὑμῶν (of you); ⁵ εἷς (one) Κύριος (Lord), μία (one) πίστις (faith), ἓν (one) βάπτισμα (baptism); ⁶ εἷς (one) Θεὸς (God) καὶ (and) Πατὴρ (Father) πάντων (of all), ὁ (who is) ἐπὶ (over) πάντων (all) καὶ (and) διὰ (through) πάντων (all) καὶ (and) ἐν (in) πᾶσιν (all). ⁷ Ἑνὶ (One) δὲ (now) ἑκάστῳ (to each) ἡμῶν (of us) ἐδόθη (has been given) ἡ (-) χάρις (grace) κατὰ (according to) τὸ (the) μέτρον (measure) τῆς (of the) δωρεᾶς (gift) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ).

²⁹ Πᾶς (Any) λόγος (word) σαπρὸς (unwholesome) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) στόματος (mouth) ὑμῶν (of you) μὴ (not) ἐκπορευέσθω (let go forth), ἀλλὰ (but) εἴ (if) τις (any) ἀγαθὸς (good) πρὸς (for) οἰκοδομὴν (edification) τῆς (of the) χρείας (need), ἵνα (so that) δῷ (it may give) χάριν (grace) τοῖς (to those) ἀκούουσιν (hearing).

¹ Εἴ (If there is) τις (any) οὖν (therefore) παράκλησις (encouragement) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ), εἴ (if) τι (any) παραμύθιον (comfort) ἀγάπης (of love), εἴ (if) τις (any) κοινωνία (fellowship) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit), εἴ (if) τις (any) σπλάγχνα (affections) καὶ (and) οἰκτιρμοί (compassions),

¹² Ἐνδύσασθε (Put on) οὖν (therefore), ὡς (as) ἐκλεκτοὶ (the elect) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἅγιοι (holy) καὶ (and) ἠγαπημένοι (beloved), σπλάγχνα (hearts) οἰκτιρμοῦ (of compassion), χρηστότητα (kindness), ταπεινοφροσύνην (humility), πραΰτητα (gentleness), μακροθυμίαν (and patience); ¹³ ἀνεχόμενοι (bearing with) ἀλλήλων (each other) καὶ (and) χαριζόμενοι (forgiving) ἑαυτοῖς (each other). ἐάν (If) τις (anyone) πρός (against) τινα (another) ἔχῃ (should have) μομφήν (a complaint), καθὼς (even as) καὶ (also) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) ἐχαρίσατο (has forgiven) ὑμῖν (you), οὕτως (so) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you). ¹⁴ ἐπὶ (Beyond) πᾶσιν (all) δὲ (now) τούτοις (these), τὴν (put on the) ἀγάπην (love), ὅ (which) ἐστιν (is) σύνδεσμος (the bond) τῆς (-) τελειότητος (of perfect unity). ¹⁵ καὶ (And) ἡ (the) εἰρήνη (peace) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (from Christ) βραβευέτω (let rule) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) καρδίαις (hearts) ὑμῶν (of you), εἰς (to) ἣν (which) καὶ (also) ἐκλήθητε (you were called) ἐν (in) ἑνὶ (one) σώματι (body). καὶ (And) εὐχάριστοι (thankful) γίνεσθε (be).

¹¹ Διὸ (Therefore) παρακαλεῖτε (encourage) ἀλλήλους (one another) καὶ (and) οἰκοδομεῖτε (build up) εἷς (one) τὸν (-) ἕνα (another), καθὼς (just as) καὶ (also) ποιεῖτε (you are doing). ¹² Ἐρωτῶμεν (We implore) δὲ (however) ὑμᾶς (you), ἀδελφοί (brothers), εἰδέναι (to appreciate) τοὺς (those) κοπιῶντας (toiling) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) καὶ (and) προϊσταμένους (taking the lead) ὑμῶν (over you) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord), καὶ (and) νουθετοῦντας (admonishing) ὑμᾶς (you),

⁴ μηδὲ (nor) προσέχειν (to give heed) μύθοις (to myths) καὶ (and) γενεαλογίαις (genealogies) ἀπεράντοις (endless), αἵτινες (which) ἐκζητήσεις (speculations) παρέχουσιν (bring), μᾶλλον (rather) ἢ (than) οἰκονομίαν (stewardship) Θεοῦ (of God), τὴν (which is) ἐν (in) πίστει (faith).

²² Τὰς (-) δὲ (And) νεωτερικὰς (youthful) ἐπιθυμίας (lusts) φεῦγε (flee); δίωκε (pursue) δὲ (now) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness), πίστιν (faith), ἀγάπην (love), εἰρήνην (and peace), μετὰ (along with) τῶν (those) ἐπικαλουμένων (calling on) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) ἐκ (out of) καθαρᾶς (pure) καρδίας (a heart).

¹⁴ Εἰρήνην (Peace) διώκετε (pursue) μετὰ (with) πάντων (all), καὶ (and) τὸν (-) ἁγιασμόν (holiness), οὗ (which) χωρὶς (without) οὐδεὶς (no one) ὄψεται (will see) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord),

¹³ Τίς (Who) σοφὸς (is wise) καὶ (and) ἐπιστήμων (understanding) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you); δειξάτω (let him show) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) καλῆς (good) ἀναστροφῆς (conduct) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἐν (in) πραΰτητι (the humility) σοφίας (of wisdom). ¹⁴ εἰ (If) δὲ (however) ζῆλον (jealousy) πικρὸν (bitter) ἔχετε (you have), καὶ (and) ἐριθείαν (self-interest) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) ὑμῶν (of you), μὴ (not) κατακαυχᾶσθε (boast of it) καὶ (and) ψεύδεσθε (lie) κατὰ (against) τῆς (the) ἀληθείας (truth). ¹⁵ οὐκ (Not) ἔστιν (is) αὕτη (this) ἡ (the) σοφία (wisdom) ἄνωθεν (from above) κατερχομένη (coming down), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐπίγειος (is earthly), ψυχική (unspiritual), δαιμονιώδης (demonic). ¹⁶ ὅπου (Where) γὰρ (for) ζῆλος (jealousy) καὶ (and) ἐριθεία (self-interest exist), ἐκεῖ (there will be) ἀκαταστασία (disorder) καὶ (and) πᾶν (every) φαῦλον (evil) πρᾶγμα (thing). ¹⁷ Ἡ (-) δὲ (But) ἄνωθεν (the from above) σοφία (wisdom) πρῶτον (first) μὲν (indeed) ἁγνή (pure) ἐστιν (is), ἔπειτα (then) εἰρηνική (peaceable), ἐπιεικής (gentle), εὐπειθής (reasonable), μεστὴ (full) ἐλέους (of mercy) καὶ (and) καρπῶν (of fruits) ἀγαθῶν (good), ἀδιάκριτος (impartial), ἀνυπόκριτος (sincere). ¹⁸ καρπὸς (The fruit) δὲ (now) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness) ἐν (in) εἰρήνῃ (peace) σπείρεται (is sown) τοῖς (by those) ποιοῦσιν (making) εἰρήνην (peace).

¹¹ ἐκκλινάτω (Let him turn away) δὲ (also) ἀπὸ (from) κακοῦ (evil), καὶ (and) ποιησάτω (let him do) ἀγαθόν (good). ζητησάτω (Let him seek) εἰρήνην (peace) καὶ (and) διωξάτω (let him pursue) αὐτήν (it).

¹¹ οὐ (Not) τὸ (what) εἰσερχόμενον (is entering) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth) κοινοῖ (defiles) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man); ἀλλὰ (but) τὸ (that) ἐκπορευόμενον (going forth) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) στόματος (mouth), τοῦτο (this) κοινοῖ (defiles) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man).”

⁶ Ὃς (Whoever) δ’ (then) ἂν (-) σκανδαλίσῃ (shall cause to stumble) ἕνα (one) τῶν (of the) μικρῶν (little ones) τούτων (of these) τῶν (-) πιστευόντων (believing) εἰς (in) ἐμέ (Me), συμφέρει (it is better) αὐτῷ (for him) ἵνα (that) κρεμασθῇ (should be hung) μύλος (a millstone) ὀνικὸς (heavy) περὶ (around) τὸν (the) τράχηλον (neck) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) καταποντισθῇ (he be sunk) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) πελάγει (depth) τῆς (of the) θαλάσσης (sea).

¹⁵ Καὶ (And) φωνὴ (a voice) πάλιν (came again) ἐκ (for) δευτέρου (the second time) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (him): “Ἃ (What) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἐκαθάρισεν (has cleansed), σὺ (you) μὴ (not) κοίνου (call common).”

¹⁴ Οἶδα (I know) καὶ (and) πέπεισμαι (I am persuaded) ἐν (in the) Κυρίῳ (Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) ὅτι (that) οὐδὲν (nothing is) κοινὸν (unclean) δι’ (of) ἑαυτοῦ (itself); εἰ (if) μὴ (not) τῷ (to him) λογιζομένῳ (reckoning) τι (anything) κοινὸν (unclean) εἶναι (to be), ἐκείνῳ (to that one) κοινόν (unclean it is). ¹⁵ εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) διὰ (on account of) βρῶμα (food), ὁ (the) ἀδελφός (brother) σου (of you) λυπεῖται (is grieved), οὐκέτι (no longer) κατὰ (according to) ἀγάπην (love) περιπατεῖς (are you walking). μὴ (Not) τῷ (with the) βρώματί (food) σου (of you) ἐκεῖνον (that one) ἀπόλλυε (destroy), ὑπὲρ (for) οὗ (whom) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἀπέθανεν (died).

¹² “Πάντα (All things) μοι (to me) ἔξεστιν (are lawful),” ἀλλ’ (but) οὐ (not) πάντα (all things) συμφέρει (do profit). “Πάντα (All things) μοι (to me) ἔξεστιν (are lawful),” ἀλλ’ (but) οὐκ (not) ἐγὼ (I) ἐξουσιασθήσομαι (will be mastered) ὑπό (by) τινος (anything). ¹³ “Τὰ (The) βρώματα (foods) τῇ (for the) κοιλίᾳ (belly) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) κοιλία (belly) τοῖς (the) βρώμασιν (for foods),” ὁ (-) δὲ (but) Θεὸς (God) καὶ (both) ταύτην (this) καὶ (and) ταῦτα (these) καταργήσει (will destroy); τὸ (-) δὲ (and) σῶμα (the body is) οὐ (not) τῇ (-) πορνείᾳ (for sexual immorality), ἀλλὰ (but) τῷ (for the) Κυρίῳ (Lord), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) τῷ (for the) σώματι (body).

³¹ Εἴτε (Whether) οὖν (therefore) ἐσθίετε (you eat), εἴτε (or) πίνετε (drink), εἴτε (or) τι (whatever) ποιεῖτε (you do), πάντα (all things) εἰς (to the) δόξαν (glory) Θεοῦ (of God) ποιεῖτε (do). ³² ἀπρόσκοποι (Without offense) καὶ (both) Ἰουδαίοις (to Jews) γίνεσθε (be you), καὶ (and) Ἕλλησιν (Greeks), καὶ (and) τῇ (to the) ἐκκλησίᾳ (church) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) — ³³ καθὼς (as) κἀγὼ (I also) πάντα (all) πᾶσιν (in all things) ἀρέσκω (please), μὴ (not) ζητῶν (seeking) τὸ (the) ἐμαυτοῦ (of myself) σύμφορον (profit), ἀλλὰ (but) τὸ (that) τῶν (of the) πολλῶν (many), ἵνα (that) σωθῶσιν (they may be saved).

¹⁰ αὐτοῦ (Of Him) γάρ (for) ἐσμεν (we are) ποίημα (workmanship), κτισθέντες (having been created) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) ἐπὶ (for) ἔργοις (works) ἀγαθοῖς (good), οἷς (which) προητοίμασεν (prepared beforehand) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God), ἵνα (that) ἐν (in) αὐτοῖς (them) περιπατήσωμεν (we should walk).

⁶ πεποιθὼς (being persuaded of) αὐτὸ (the very thing) τοῦτο (this), ὅτι (that) ὁ (the One) ἐναρξάμενος (having begun) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) ἔργον (a work) ἀγαθὸν (good) ἐπιτελέσει (will complete it) ἄχρι (until) ἡμέρας (the day) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).

⁷ Οὐαὶ (Woe) τῷ (to the) κόσμῳ (world) ἀπὸ (because of) τῶν (the) σκανδάλων (causes of sin). ἀνάγκη (Necessary are) γὰρ (for) ἐλθεῖν (to come) τὰ (the) σκάνδαλα (stumbling blocks), πλὴν (but) οὐαὶ (woe) τῷ (to the) ἀνθρώπῳ (man) δι’ (by) οὗ (whom) τὸ (the) σκάνδαλον (offense) ἔρχεται (comes)! ⁸ Εἰ (If) δὲ (now) ἡ (the) χείρ (hand) σου (of you) ἢ (or) ὁ (the) πούς (foot) σου (of you) σκανδαλίζει (causes to sin) σε (you), ἔκκοψον (cut off) αὐτὸν (it) καὶ (and) βάλε (cast it) ἀπὸ (from) σοῦ (you); καλόν (better) σοί (for you) ἐστιν (it is) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter) εἰς (into) τὴν (-) ζωὴν (life) κυλλὸν (crippled) ἢ (or) χωλόν (lame), ἢ (than) δύο (two) χεῖρας (hands) ἢ (or) δύο (two) πόδας (feet) ἔχοντα (having), βληθῆναι (to be cast) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πῦρ (fire) τὸ (-) αἰώνιον (eternal). ⁹ καὶ (And) εἰ (if) ὁ (the) ὀφθαλμός (eye) σου (of you) σκανδαλίζει (causes to sin) σε (you), ἔξελε (gouge out) αὐτὸν (it) καὶ (and) βάλε (cast it) ἀπὸ (from) σοῦ (you); καλόν (better) σοί (for you) ἐστιν (it is) μονόφθαλμον (one-eyed) εἰς (into) τὴν (-) ζωὴν (life) εἰσελθεῖν (to enter), ἢ (than) δύο (two) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) ἔχοντα (having) βληθῆναι (to be cast) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) γέενναν (hell) τοῦ (of the) πυρός (fire). ¹⁰ Ὁρᾶτε (See that) μὴ (not) καταφρονήσητε (you despise) ἑνὸς (one) τῶν (of the) μικρῶν (little ones) τούτων (of these). λέγω (I say) γὰρ (for) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) οἱ (the) ἄγγελοι (angels) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐν (in) οὐρανοῖς (the heavens) διὰ (continually) παντὸς (always) βλέπουσι (behold) τὸ (the) πρόσωπον (face) τοῦ (of the) Πατρός (Father) μου (of me), τοῦ (who is) ἐν (in) οὐρανοῖς (the heavens).

¹ Εἶπεν (He said) δὲ (then) πρὸς (to) τοὺς (the) μαθητὰς (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him), “Ἀνένδεκτόν (Impossible) ἐστιν (it is) τοῦ (for) τὰ (the) σκάνδαλα (stumbling blocks) μὴ (not) ἐλθεῖν (to come), πλὴν* (but) οὐαὶ (woe to him) δι’ (by) οὗ (whom) ἔρχεται (they come)! ² λυσιτελεῖ (It is better) αὐτῷ (for him) εἰ (if) λίθος (a stone) μυλικὸς (of a mill) περίκειται (is hung) περὶ (around) τὸν (the) τράχηλον (neck) αὐτοῦ (of him) καὶ (and) ἔρριπται (he is thrown) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) θάλασσαν (sea), ἢ (than) ἵνα (that) σκανδαλίσῃ (he should cause to stumble) τῶν (-) μικρῶν (little) τούτων (of these) ἕνα (one).

¹⁷ οὐ (Not) γάρ (for) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) βασιλεία (kingdom) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) βρῶσις (eating) καὶ (and) πόσις (drinking), ἀλλὰ (but) δικαιοσύνη (righteousness) καὶ (and) εἰρήνη (peace) καὶ (and) χαρὰ (joy) ἐν (in the) Πνεύματι (Spirit) Ἁγίῳ (Holy).

¹ Ὀφείλομεν (We ought) δὲ (now), ἡμεῖς (we) οἱ (who are) δυνατοὶ (strong), τὰ (the) ἀσθενήματα (weaknesses) τῶν (of the) ἀδυνάτων (weak) βαστάζειν (to bear), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ἑαυτοῖς (ourselves) ἀρέσκειν (to please). ² ἕκαστος (Each) ἡμῶν (of us) τῷ (the) πλησίον (neighbor) ἀρεσκέτω (let please), εἰς (unto) τὸ (the) ἀγαθὸν (good), πρὸς (for) οἰκοδομήν (edification).

¹³ Διόπερ (Therefore) εἰ (if) βρῶμα (food) σκανδαλίζει (snares) τὸν (the) ἀδελφόν (brother) μου (of me), οὐ (never) μὴ (not) φάγω (shall I eat) κρέα (meat) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) τὸν (the) ἀδελφόν (brother) μου (of me) σκανδαλίσω (I might snare).

¹³ καὶ (and) τροχιὰς (paths) ὀρθὰς (straight) ποιεῖτε (make) τοῖς (for the) ποσὶν (feet) ὑμῶν (of you), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) τὸ (the) χωλὸν (lame) ἐκτραπῇ (should be put out of joint), ἰαθῇ (should be healed) δὲ (however) μᾶλλον (rather).

¹⁶ ἐν (In) τούτῳ (this) καὶ (also) αὐτὸς (I myself) ἀσκῶ (strive), ἀπρόσκοπον (without offense) συνείδησιν (a conscience) ἔχειν (to have) πρὸς (toward) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) καὶ (and) τοὺς (-) ἀνθρώπους (men), διὰ (through) παντός (everything).

¹⁵ ὃ (What) γὰρ (for) κατεργάζομαι (I do), οὐ (not) γινώσκω (I understand); οὐ (not) γὰρ (for) ὃ (what) θέλω (I want), τοῦτο (this) πράσσω (I do); ἀλλ’ (but) ὃ (what) μισῶ (I hate), τοῦτο (this) ποιῶ (I do).

²⁴ Ταλαίπωρος (O wretched) ἐγὼ (I am) ἄνθρωπος (man)! τίς (Who) με (me) ῥύσεται (will deliver) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) σώματος (body) τοῦ (-) θανάτου (of death) τούτου (this)?

⁵ Ὃς (One) μὲν (truly) γὰρ (for) κρίνει (judges) ἡμέραν (a day) παρ’ (to be above) ἡμέραν (another day); ὃς (one) δὲ (however) κρίνει (judges) πᾶσαν (every) ἡμέραν (day alike). ἕκαστος (Each) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἰδίῳ (own) νοῒ (mind), πληροφορείσθω (let be fully assured).

¹² Ἡ (-) γὰρ (For) καύχησις (the boasting) ἡμῶν (of us) αὕτη (this) ἐστίν (is), τὸ (the) μαρτύριον (testimony) τῆς (of the) συνειδήσεως (conscience) ἡμῶν (of us), ὅτι (that) ἐν (in) ἁγιότητι (the holiness) καὶ (and) εἰλικρινείᾳ (sincerity) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), [καὶ] (and) οὐκ (not) ἐν (in) σοφίᾳ (wisdom) σαρκικῇ (fleshly), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐν (in) χάριτι (the grace) Θεοῦ (of God), ἀνεστράφημεν (we have conducted ourselves) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world), περισσοτέρως (more abundantly) δὲ (now) πρὸς (toward) ὑμᾶς (you).

¹ Ἀδελφοί (Brothers), ἐὰν (if) καὶ (even) προλημφθῇ (should be overcome) ἄνθρωπος (a man) ἔν (in) τινι (some) παραπτώματι (trespass), ὑμεῖς (you), οἱ (the) πνευματικοὶ (spiritual ones), καταρτίζετε (restore) τὸν (-) τοιοῦτον (such a one) ἐν (in) πνεύματι (a spirit) πραΰτητος (of gentleness), σκοπῶν (considering) σεαυτόν (yourself), μὴ (lest) καὶ (also) σὺ (you) πειρασθῇς (be tempted).

¹³ Τίς (Who) σοφὸς (is wise) καὶ (and) ἐπιστήμων (understanding) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you); δειξάτω (let him show) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) καλῆς (good) ἀναστροφῆς (conduct) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) αὐτοῦ (of him), ἐν (in) πραΰτητι (the humility) σοφίας (of wisdom).

²¹ Ἀγαπητοί (Beloved), ἐὰν (if) ἡ (the) καρδία (heart) ‹ἡμῶν› (of us) «μὴ (not) καταγινώσκῃ» (should condemn us), παρρησίαν (confidence) ἔχομεν (we have) πρὸς (toward) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God),

² ὥστε (Therefore) ὁ (the one) ἀντιτασσόμενος (resisting) τῇ (the) ἐξουσίᾳ (authority), τῇ (the) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) διαταγῇ (ordinance) ἀνθέστηκεν (has resisted); οἱ (those) δὲ (now) ἀνθεστηκότες (having resisted) ἑαυτοῖς (upon themselves) κρίμα (judgment) λήμψονται (will bring).

²⁹ ὁ (The one) γὰρ (for) ἐσθίων (eating) καὶ (and) πίνων (drinking) κρίμα (judgment) ἑαυτῷ (on himself), ἐσθίει (eats) καὶ (and) πίνει (drinks) μὴ (not) διακρίνων (discerning) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body). ³⁰ διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this), ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you) πολλοὶ (many) ἀσθενεῖς (are weak) καὶ (and) ἄρρωστοι (sick), καὶ (and) κοιμῶνται (are fallen asleep) ἱκανοί (many). ³¹ Εἰ (If) δὲ (for) ἑαυτοὺς (ourselves) διεκρίνομεν (we were judging), οὐκ (not) ἂν (-) ἐκρινόμεθα (we would come under judgment).

⁶ χωρὶς (Without) δὲ (now) πίστεως (faith), ἀδύνατον (it is impossible) εὐαρεστῆσαι (to please Him). πιστεῦσαι (To believe) γὰρ (for) δεῖ (it behooves) τὸν (the one) προσερχόμενον (drawing near) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), ὅτι (that) ἔστιν (He exists), καὶ (and that) τοῖς (to those) ἐκζητοῦσιν (earnestly seeking out) αὐτὸν (Him), μισθαποδότης (a rewarder) γίνεται (He becomes).
