¹ Τί (What) οὖν (then) ἐροῦμεν (will we say)? ἐπιμένωμεν (Shall we continue) τῇ (-) ἁμαρτίᾳ (in sin), ἵνα (that) ἡ (-) χάρις (grace) πλεονάσῃ (may abound)? ² μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)! οἵτινες (Who) ἀπεθάνομεν (we died) τῇ (-) ἁμαρτίᾳ (to sin), πῶς (how) ἔτι (still) ζήσομεν (shall we live) ἐν (in) αὐτῇ (it)? ³ ἢ (Or) ἀγνοεῖτε (are you unaware) ὅτι (that) ὅσοι (as many as) ἐβαπτίσθημεν (have been baptized) εἰς (into) Χριστὸν (Christ) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), εἰς (into) τὸν (the) θάνατον (death) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐβαπτίσθημεν (have been baptized)? ⁴ ἢ (Or) τοῦ (the) πλούτου (riches) τῆς (of the) χρηστότητος (kindness) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) τῆς (the) ἀνοχῆς (forbearance), καὶ (and) τῆς (the) μακροθυμίας (patience) καταφρονεῖς (despise you), ἀγνοῶν (not knowing) ὅτι (that) τὸ (the) χρηστὸν (kindness) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) εἰς (to) μετάνοιάν (repentance) σε (you) ἄγει (leads)?

⁵ Εἰ (If) δὲ (however) ἡ (the) ἀδικία (unrighteousness) ἡμῶν (of us), Θεοῦ (God’s) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness) συνίστησιν (shows), τί (what) ἐροῦμεν (shall we say)? μὴ (Is) ἄδικος (unrighteous) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God), ὁ (-) ἐπιφέρων (inflicting) τὴν (the) ὀργήν (wrath)? κατὰ (According to) ἄνθρωπον (man) λέγω (I speak). ⁶ μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)! ἐπεὶ (Otherwise), πῶς (how) κρινεῖ (will judge) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world)? ⁷ εἰ (If) δὲ (however) ἡ (the) ἀλήθεια (truth) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἐν (in) τῷ (-) ἐμῷ (my) ψεύσματι (lie), ἐπερίσσευσεν (abounded) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him), τί (why) ἔτι (still) κἀγὼ (also I) ὡς (as) ἁμαρτωλὸς (a sinner) κρίνομαι (am judged)? ⁸ καὶ (And is it) μὴ (not), καθὼς (as) βλασφημούμεθα (we are slanderously charged), καὶ (and) καθώς (as) φασίν (affirm) τινες (some that) ἡμᾶς (us) λέγειν (to say) ὅτι (-), “Ποιήσωμεν (Let us do) τὰ (things) κακὰ (evil), ἵνα (that) ἔλθῃ (may come) τὰ (the) ἀγαθά (good things)?” ὧν (Their) τὸ (-) κρίμα (condemnation) ἔνδικόν (just) ἐστιν (is).

³¹ Νόμον (Law) οὖν (then) καταργοῦμεν (do we nullify) διὰ (through) τῆς (-) πίστεως (faith)? μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)! ἀλλὰ (Instead), νόμον (law) ἱστάνομεν (we uphold).

²⁰ Νόμος (The law) δὲ (now) παρεισῆλθεν (entered), ἵνα (so that) πλεονάσῃ (might abound) τὸ (the) παράπτωμα (trespass); οὗ (where) δὲ (however) ἐπλεόνασεν (abounded) ἡ (-) ἁμαρτία (sin), ὑπερεπερίσσευσεν (overabounded) ἡ (-) χάρις (grace), ²¹ ἵνα (so that) ὥσπερ (just as) ἐβασίλευσεν (reigned) ἡ (the) ἁμαρτία (sin) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) θανάτῳ (death), οὕτως (so) καὶ (also) ἡ (-) χάρις (grace) βασιλεύσῃ (might reign) διὰ (through) δικαιοσύνης (righteousness), εἰς (unto) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal), διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us).

¹⁵ Τί (What) οὖν (then)? ἁμαρτήσωμεν (Shall we sin) ὅτι (because) οὐκ (not) ἐσμὲν (we are) ὑπὸ (under) νόμον (law), ἀλλὰ (but) ὑπὸ (under) χάριν (grace)? μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)!

¹³ Ὑμεῖς (You) γὰρ (for) ἐπ’ (to) ἐλευθερίᾳ (freedom) ἐκλήθητε (were called), ἀδελφοί (brothers); μόνον (but) μὴ (not) τὴν (the) ἐλευθερίαν (freedom) εἰς (for) ἀφορμὴν (an opportunity) τῇ (to the) σαρκί (flesh). ἀλλὰ (Rather) διὰ (through) τῆς (-) ἀγάπης (love), δουλεύετε (serve) ἀλλήλοις (one another).

¹⁶ ὡς (as) ἐλεύθεροι (free), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ὡς (as) ἐπικάλυμμα (a cover-up) ἔχοντες (having) τῆς (for) κακίας (evil) τὴν (the) ἐλευθερίαν (freedom), ἀλλ’ (but) ὡς (as) Θεοῦ (of God) δοῦλοι (servants).

¹⁸ ὑπέρογκα (Arrogant) γὰρ (for) ματαιότητος (of vanity) φθεγγόμενοι (speaking words), δελεάζουσιν (they entice) ἐν (with) ἐπιθυμίαις (the passions) σαρκὸς (of the flesh) ἀσελγείαις (to sensuality) τοὺς (those) ὀλίγως (barely) ἀποφεύγοντας (escaping) τοὺς (from those) ἐν (in) πλάνῃ (error) ἀναστρεφομένους (living), ¹⁹ ἐλευθερίαν (freedom) αὐτοῖς (them) ἐπαγγελλόμενοι (promising), αὐτοὶ (themselves) δοῦλοι (slaves) ὑπάρχοντες (being) τῆς (-) φθορᾶς (of corruption). ᾧ (By what) γάρ (for) τις (anyone) ἥττηται (has been subdued), τούτῳ (by that) ‹καὶ› (also) δεδούλωται (he is enslaved).

⁴ παρεισέδυσαν* (Came in stealthily) γάρ (for) τινες (certain) ἄνθρωποι (men), οἱ (those) πάλαι (long ago) προγεγραμμένοι (having been designated) εἰς (unto) τοῦτο (this) τὸ (-) κρίμα (condemnation), ἀσεβεῖς (ungodly ones), τὴν (the) τοῦ (of the) Θεοῦ (God) ἡμῶν (of us) χάριτα (grace) μετατιθέντες (changing) εἰς (into) ἀσέλγειαν (sensuality), καὶ (and) τὸν (the) μόνον (only) Δεσπότην (master) καὶ (and) Κύριον (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) Χριστὸν (Christ) ἀρνούμενοι (denying).

¹ Τί (What) οὖν (then is) τὸ (the) περισσὸν (superiority) τοῦ (of the) Ἰουδαίου (Jew)? ἢ (Or) τίς (what is) ἡ (the) ὠφέλεια (benefit) τῆς (of the) περιτομῆς (circumcision)? ² πολὺ (Much) κατὰ (in) πάντα (every) τρόπον (way). πρῶτον (Chiefly) μὲν (indeed) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) ἐπιστεύθησαν (they were entrusted with) τὰ (the) λόγια (oracles) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God). ³ Τί (What) γάρ (for) εἰ (if) ἠπίστησάν (disbelieved) τινες (some)? μὴ (Not) ἡ (the) ἀπιστία (unbelief) αὐτῶν (of them), τὴν (the) πίστιν (faithfulness) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) καταργήσει (will nullify)? ⁴ μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)! γινέσθω (Let be) δὲ (however) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἀληθής (true), πᾶς (every) δὲ (now) ἄνθρωπος (man) ψεύστης (a liar), καθὼς* (as) γέγραπται (it has been written): “Ὅπως (That) ἂν (-) δικαιωθῇς (You may be justified) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) λόγοις (words) σου (of You), καὶ (and) νικήσεις (will prevail) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) κρίνεσθαί (being judged) σε (Your).”

¹¹ οὐ (Not) μόνον (only so) δέ (now), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) καυχώμενοι (we are rejoicing) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), δι’ (through) οὗ (whom) νῦν (now) τὴν (the) καταλλαγὴν (reconciliation) ἐλάβομεν (we have received).

⁴ Ὥστε (Likewise), ἀδελφοί (brothers) μου (of me), καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) ἐθανατώθητε (have been put to death) τῷ (to the) νόμῳ (law) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) σώματος (body) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) γενέσθαι (to belong) ὑμᾶς (you) ἑτέρῳ (to another), τῷ (to the One) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead) ἐγερθέντι (having been raised), ἵνα (so that) καρποφορήσωμεν (we should bear fruit) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God).

⁶ νυνὶ (Now) δὲ (however) κατηργήθημεν (we have been released) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law), ἀποθανόντες (having died) ἐν (to) ᾧ (that which) κατειχόμεθα (we were bound), ὥστε (in order for) δουλεύειν (to serve) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐν (in) καινότητι (newness) πνεύματος (of the Spirit), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) παλαιότητι (in oldness) γράμματος (of the letter).

¹⁴ ἡ (The) γὰρ (for) ἀγάπη (love) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) συνέχει (compels) ἡμᾶς (us), κρίναντας (having concluded) τοῦτο (this), ὅτι (that) εἷς (One) ὑπὲρ (for) πάντων (all) ἀπέθανεν (has died), ἄρα (therefore) οἱ (-) πάντες (all) ἀπέθανον (have died). ¹⁵ καὶ (And) ὑπὲρ (for) πάντων (all) ἀπέθανεν (He died), ἵνα (that) οἱ (those) ζῶντες (living), μηκέτι (no longer) ἑαυτοῖς (to themselves) ζῶσιν (should live), ἀλλὰ (but) τῷ (to the One) ὑπὲρ (for) αὐτῶν (them) ἀποθανόντι (having died) καὶ (and) ἐγερθέντι (having been raised again). ¹⁶ Ὥστε (Therefore) ἡμεῖς (we) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (-) νῦν (now) οὐδένα (no one) οἴδαμεν (regard) κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (the flesh). εἰ (Though) καὶ (even) ἐγνώκαμεν (we have regarded) κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (flesh) Χριστόν (Christ), ἀλλὰ (yet) νῦν (now) οὐκέτι (no longer) γινώσκομεν (we regard Him thus). ¹⁷ ὥστε (Therefore) εἴ (if) τις (anyone) ἐν (is in) Χριστῷ (Christ), καινὴ (he is a new) κτίσις (creation). τὰ (The) ἀρχαῖα (old things) παρῆλθεν (have passed away); ἰδοὺ (behold), γέγονεν (has come into being) καινά (the new).

¹⁹ ἐγὼ (I) γὰρ (for), διὰ (through) νόμου (the Law) νόμῳ (to the Law) ἀπέθανον (died), ἵνα (that) Θεῷ (to God) ζήσω (I might live).

¹⁴ Ἐμοὶ (For me) δὲ (however), μὴ (never) γένοιτο (may it be) καυχᾶσθαι (to boast), εἰ (if) μὴ (never) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) σταυρῷ (cross) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), δι’ (through) οὗ (which) ἐμοὶ (to me) κόσμος (the world) ἐσταύρωται (has been crucified), κἀγὼ (and I) κόσμῳ (to the world).

²⁰ Εἰ (If) ἀπεθάνετε (you have died) σὺν (with) Χριστῷ (Christ) ἀπὸ (away from) τῶν (the) στοιχείων (principles) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world), τί (why) ὡς (as if) ζῶντες (living) ἐν (in) κόσμῳ (the world), δογματίζεσθε (do you submit to decrees):

¹⁴ ὡς (as) τέκνα (children) ὑπακοῆς (of obedience), μὴ (not) συσχηματιζόμενοι (fashioning yourselves) ταῖς (to the) πρότερον (former) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀγνοίᾳ (ignorance) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐπιθυμίαις (desires).

²⁴ ὃς (Who) τὰς (the) ἁμαρτίας (sins) ἡμῶν (of us) αὐτὸς (Himself) ἀνήνεγκεν (bore) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) σώματι (body) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐπὶ (on) τὸ (the) ξύλον (tree), ἵνα (so that), ταῖς (-) ἁμαρτίαις (to sins) ἀπογενόμενοι (having been dead), τῇ (-) δικαιοσύνῃ (to righteousness) ζήσωμεν (we might live). “Οὗ (By whose) τῷ (-) μώλωπι (wounds) ἰάθητε (you have been healed).”

¹ Χριστοῦ (Christ) οὖν (therefore) παθόντος (having suffered) σαρκὶ (in the flesh), καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) τὴν (the) αὐτὴν (same) ἔννοιαν (mind) ὁπλίσασθε (arm yourselves with), ὅτι (because) ὁ (the one) παθὼν (having suffered) σαρκὶ (in the flesh) πέπαυται (is done with) ἁμαρτίας (sin), ² εἰς (so as) τὸ (-) μηκέτι (no longer) ἀνθρώπων (to men’s) ἐπιθυμίαις (desires) ἀλλὰ (but) θελήματι (to the will) Θεοῦ (of God), τὸν (the) ἐπίλοιπον (remaining) ἐν (in) σαρκὶ (the flesh) βιῶσαι (to live) χρόνον (time). ³ ἀρκετὸς (Is sufficient) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) παρεληλυθὼς (past) χρόνος (time) τὸ (the) βούλημα (desire) τῶν (of the) ἐθνῶν (Gentiles) κατειργάσθαι (to have carried out), πεπορευμένους (having walked) ἐν (in) ἀσελγείαις (sensuality), ἐπιθυμίαις (lusts), οἰνοφλυγίαις (drunkenness), κώμοις (orgies), πότοις (carousing), καὶ (and) ἀθεμίτοις (abominable) εἰδωλολατρίαις (idolatries).

⁹ Πᾶς (Anyone) ὁ (-) γεγεννημένος (having been born) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God), ἁμαρτίαν (sin) οὐ (not) ποιεῖ (practices), ὅτι (because) σπέρμα (seed) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him) μένει (abides), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) δύναται (he is able) ἁμαρτάνειν (to continue sinning), ὅτι (because) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) γεγέννηται (he has been born).

¹⁹ πορευθέντες (Having gone) οὖν (therefore), μαθητεύσατε (disciple) πάντα (all) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (nations), βαπτίζοντες (baptizing) αὐτοὺς (them) εἰς (in) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) τοῦ (of the) Πατρὸς (Father), καὶ (and) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son), καὶ (and) τοῦ (of the) Ἁγίου (Holy) Πνεύματος (Spirit),

¹⁶ οὐδέπω (Not yet) γὰρ (for) ἦν (He was) ἐπ’ (upon) οὐδενὶ (any) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐπιπεπτωκός (fallen); μόνον (only) δὲ (however) βεβαπτισμένοι (baptized) ὑπῆρχον (they had been) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) τοῦ (of the) κυρίου (Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).

⁵ Ἀκούσαντες (Having heard) δὲ (then), ἐβαπτίσθησαν (they were baptized) εἰς (in) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).

⁴ συνετάφημεν (We were buried) οὖν (therefore) αὐτῷ (with Him) διὰ (through) τοῦ (-) βαπτίσματος (baptism) εἰς (into) τὸν (-) θάνατον (death), ἵνα (so that) ὥσπερ (just as) ἠγέρθη (was raised up) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead) διὰ (by) τῆς (the) δόξης (glory) τοῦ (of the) Πατρός (Father), οὕτως (so) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we) ἐν (in) καινότητι (newness) ζωῆς (of life) περιπατήσωμεν (should walk). ⁵ Εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) σύμφυτοι (united) γεγόναμεν (we have become) τῷ (in the) ὁμοιώματι (likeness) τοῦ (of the) θανάτου (death) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ἀλλὰ (certainly) καὶ (also) τῆς (of the) ἀναστάσεως (resurrection) ἐσόμεθα (we will be);

¹⁶ οὐκ (Not) οἴδατε (know you) ὅτι (that) ᾧ (to whom) παριστάνετε (you yield) ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves) δούλους (as slaves) εἰς (for) ὑπακοήν (obedience), δοῦλοί (slaves) ἐστε (you are) ᾧ (to him whom) ὑπακούετε (you obey), ἤτοι (whether) ἁμαρτίας (of sin) εἰς (to) θάνατον (death), ἢ (or) ὑπακοῆς (of obedience) εἰς (to) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness)?

¹ Ἢ (Or) ἀγνοεῖτε (are you ignorant), ἀδελφοί (brothers)— γινώσκουσιν (to those knowing) γὰρ (for) νόμον (law) λαλῶ (I speak)— ὅτι (that) ὁ (the) νόμος (law) κυριεύει (rules over) τοῦ (the) ἀνθρώπου (man) ἐφ’ (for) ὅσον (as long as) χρόνον (the time) ζῇ (he is alive)?

¹⁶ Οὐκ (Not) οἴδατε (know you) ὅτι (that) ναὸς (temple) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐστε (you yourselves are), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) «ἐν (in) ὑμῖν» (you) οἰκεῖ (dwells)?

⁶ Οὐ (Not) καλὸν (good is) τὸ (the) καύχημα (boasting) ὑμῶν (of you). οὐκ (Not) οἴδατε (know you) ὅτι (that) μικρὰ (a little) ζύμη (leaven) ὅλον (all) τὸ (the) φύραμα (lump) ζυμοῖ (leavens)?

² ἢ (Or) οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (know you) ὅτι (that) οἱ (the) ἅγιοι (saints) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) κρινοῦσιν (will judge)? καὶ (And) εἰ (if) ἐν (by) ὑμῖν (you) κρίνεται (is to be judged) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world), ἀνάξιοί (unworthy) ἐστε (are you) κριτηρίων (of cases) ἐλαχίστων (of the smallest)? ³ οὐκ (Not) οἴδατε (know you) ὅτι (that) ἀγγέλους (angels) κρινοῦμεν (we will judge)? μήτιγε (How much more) βιωτικά (the things of this life)?

⁹ Ἢ (Or) οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (know you) ὅτι (that) ἄδικοι (the unrighteous ones) Θεοῦ (of God) βασιλείαν (the kingdom) οὐ (not) κληρονομήσουσιν (will inherit)? μὴ (Not) πλανᾶσθε (be deceived): οὔτε (neither) πόρνοι (the sexually immoral), οὔτε (nor) εἰδωλολάτραι (idolaters), οὔτε (nor) μοιχοὶ (adulterers), οὔτε (nor) μαλακοὶ (effeminate), οὔτε (nor) ἀρσενοκοῖται (homosexuals),

¹⁵ Οὐκ (Not) οἴδατε (know you) ὅτι (that) τὰ (the) σώματα (bodies) ὑμῶν (of you) μέλη (members) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) ἐστιν (are)? ἄρας (Having taken) οὖν (then) τὰ (the) μέλη (members) τοῦ (of the) Χριστοῦ (Christ), ποιήσω (shall I make) πόρνης (them of a prostitute) μέλη (members)? μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)! ¹⁶ ἢ (Or) οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (know you) ὅτι (that) ὁ (the one) κολλώμενος (being joined) τῇ (to the) πόρνῃ (prostitute), ἓν (one) σῶμά (body) ἐστιν (is)? “Ἔσονται (Will become),” γάρ (for) φησίν (it says), “Οἱ (the) δύο (two) εἰς (into) σάρκα (flesh) μίαν (one).”

¹⁹ ἢ (Or) οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (know you) ὅτι (that) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body) ὑμῶν (of you) ναὸς (a temple) τοῦ (of the) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) Ἁγίου (Holy) Πνεύματός (Spirit) ἐστιν (is), οὗ (whom) ἔχετε (you have) ἀπὸ (from) Θεοῦ (God)? καὶ (And) οὐκ (not) ἐστὲ (you are) ἑαυτῶν (your own),

¹³ Οὐκ (Not) οἴδατε (know you) ὅτι (that) οἱ (those) τὰ (in the) ἱερὰ (temple) ἐργαζόμενοι (working), τὰ (the things) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) ἱεροῦ (temple) ἐσθίουσιν (eat); οἱ (those) τῷ (at the) θυσιαστηρίῳ (altar) παρεδρεύοντες (attending), τῷ (in the) θυσιαστηρίῳ (altar) συμμερίζονται (partake)?

²⁴ Οὐκ (Not) οἴδατε (know you) ὅτι (that) οἱ (those) ἐν (in) σταδίῳ (a race course) τρέχοντες (running), πάντες (all) μὲν (indeed) τρέχουσιν (run); εἷς (one) δὲ (however) λαμβάνει (receives) τὸ (the) βραβεῖον (prize)? οὕτως (Thus) τρέχετε (run), ἵνα (that) καταλάβητε (you might obtain it).

¹³ καὶ (Also) γὰρ (for) ἐν (in) ἑνὶ (one) Πνεύματι (Spirit), ἡμεῖς (we) πάντες (all) εἰς (into) ἓν (one) σῶμα (body) ἐβαπτίσθημεν (were baptized), εἴτε (whether) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews) εἴτε (or) Ἕλληνες (Greeks), εἴτε (whether) δοῦλοι (slaves) εἴτε (or) ἐλεύθεροι (free); καὶ (and) πάντες (all) ἓν (one) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) ἐποτίσθημεν (we were made to drink).

²⁹ Ἐπεὶ (Otherwise) τί (what) ποιήσουσιν (will they do) οἱ (who) βαπτιζόμενοι (are baptized) ὑπὲρ (for) τῶν (the) νεκρῶν (dead)? εἰ (If) ὅλως (at all) νεκροὶ (the dead) οὐκ (not) ἐγείρονται (are raised), τί (why) καὶ (also) βαπτίζονται (are they baptized) ὑπὲρ (for) αὐτῶν (them)?

⁵ Ἑαυτοὺς (Yourselves) πειράζετε (examine) εἰ (whether) ἐστὲ (you are) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) πίστει (faith); ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves) δοκιμάζετε (test). ἢ (Or) οὐκ (not) ἐπιγινώσκετε (do you recognize) ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves) ὅτι (that) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) Χριστὸς (Christ is) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you), εἰ (if) μήτι (not) ἀδόκιμοί (unapproved) ἐστε (you are)?

²⁰ Χριστῷ (Christ) συνεσταύρωμαι (I have been crucified with); ζῶ (I live) δὲ (now), οὐκέτι (no longer) ἐγώ (I); ζῇ (lives) δὲ (however) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (me) Χριστός (Christ); ὃ (that which) δὲ (then) νῦν (now) ζῶ (I live) ἐν (in) σαρκί (the flesh), ἐν (through) πίστει (faith) ζῶ (I live), τῇ (that) τοῦ (from the) Υἱοῦ (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), τοῦ (the One) ἀγαπήσαντός (having loved) με (me) καὶ (and) παραδόντος (having given up) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) ὑπὲρ (for) ἐμοῦ (me). ²¹ Οὐκ (Not) ἀθετῶ (I do set aside) τὴν (the) χάριν (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God); εἰ (if) γὰρ (for) διὰ (through) νόμου (the Law) δικαιοσύνη (righteousness is), ἄρα (then) Χριστὸς (Christ) δωρεὰν (for naught) ἀπέθανεν (died).”

²⁷ ὅσοι (As many as) γὰρ (for) εἰς (into) Χριστὸν (Christ) ἐβαπτίσθητε (you were baptized), Χριστὸν (Christ) ἐνεδύσασθε (you have put on).

⁴ Μοιχαλίδες (Adulteresses)! οὐκ (Not) οἴδατε (know you) ὅτι (that) ἡ (the) φιλία (friendship) τοῦ (with the) κόσμου (world), ἔχθρα (hostility) τοῦ (with) Θεοῦ (God) ἐστιν (is)? ὃς (Whoever) ἐὰν (if) οὖν (therefore) βουληθῇ (has chosen) φίλος (a friend) εἶναι (to be) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world), ἐχθρὸς (an enemy) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) καθίσταται (is appointed).

²¹ ὃ (which) καὶ (also) ὑμᾶς (you) ἀντίτυπον (prefigures) νῦν (now) σῴζει (saving) βάπτισμα (baptism), οὐ (not) σαρκὸς (of flesh) ἀπόθεσις (a putting away) ῥύπου (of the filth), ἀλλὰ (but) συνειδήσεως (of a conscience) ἀγαθῆς (good), ἐπερώτημα (the demand) εἰς (toward) Θεόν (God), δι’ (through) ἀναστάσεως (the resurrection) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ),

² Καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), σεισμὸς (an earthquake) ἐγένετο (there was) μέγας (great); ἄγγελος (an angel) γὰρ (for) Κυρίου (of the Lord), καταβὰς (having descended) ἐξ (out of) οὐρανοῦ (heaven), καὶ (and) προσελθὼν (having come), ἀπεκύλισεν (rolled away) τὸν (the) λίθον (stone) καὶ (and) ἐκάθητο (was sitting) ἐπάνω (upon) αὐτοῦ (it). ³ ἦν (Was) δὲ (now) ἡ (the) εἰδέα (appearance) αὐτοῦ (of him) ὡς (like) ἀστραπὴ (lightning), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) ἔνδυμα (clothing) αὐτοῦ (of him) λευκὸν (white) ὡς (as) χιών (snow).

¹¹ Ταύτην (This) ἐποίησεν (did), ἀρχὴν (the beginning) τῶν (of the) σημείων (signs), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐν (in) Κανὰ (Cana) τῆς (-) Γαλιλαίας (of Galilee), καὶ (and) ἐφανέρωσεν (He revealed) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) ἐπίστευσαν (believed) εἰς (in) αὐτὸν (Him) οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

¹⁹ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) καὶ (and) εἶπεν (said) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Λύσατε (Destroy) τὸν (the) ναὸν (temple) τοῦτον (this), καὶ (and) ἐν (in) τρισὶν (three) ἡμέραις (days) ἐγερῶ (I will raise up) αὐτόν (it).” ²⁰ Εἶπαν (Said) οὖν (therefore) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews), “Τεσσεράκοντα (Forty) καὶ (and) ἓξ (six) ἔτεσιν (years) οἰκοδομήθη (was built) ὁ (the) ναὸς (temple) οὗτος (this), καὶ (and) σὺ (You) ἐν (in) τρισὶν (three) ἡμέραις (days) ἐγερεῖς (will raise up) αὐτόν (it)?”

⁴⁰ Λέγει (Says) αὐτῇ (to her) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Οὐκ (Not) εἶπόν (said I) σοι (to you) ὅτι (that) ἐὰν (if) πιστεύσῃς (you should believe), ὄψῃ (you will see) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).”

²⁴ ὃν (whom) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἀνέστησεν (raised up), λύσας (having loosed) τὰς (the) ὠδῖνας (agony) τοῦ (of) θανάτου (death), καθότι (inasmuch as) οὐκ (not) ἦν (it was) δυνατὸν (possible) κρατεῖσθαι (for to be held) αὐτὸν (Him) ὑπ’ (by) αὐτοῦ (it).

³ ἢ (Or) ἀγνοεῖτε (are you unaware) ὅτι (that) ὅσοι (as many as) ἐβαπτίσθημεν (have been baptized) εἰς (into) Χριστὸν (Christ) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), εἰς (into) τὸν (the) θάνατον (death) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐβαπτίσθημεν (have been baptized)?

⁹ εἰδότες (knowing) ὅτι (that) Χριστὸς (Christ), ἐγερθεὶς (having been raised up) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead), οὐκέτι (no more) ἀποθνῄσκει (dies). θάνατος (Death) αὐτοῦ (Him) οὐκέτι (no longer) κυριεύει (rules over).

¹⁹ Ἀνθρώπινον (In human terms) λέγω (I speak) διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) ἀσθένειαν (weakness) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh) ὑμῶν (of you). ὥσπερ (For as) γὰρ (for) παρεστήσατε (you yielded) τὰ (the) μέλη (members) ὑμῶν (of you) δοῦλα (in bondage) τῇ (-) ἀκαθαρσίᾳ (to impurity) καὶ (and) τῇ (to) ἀνομίᾳ (lawlessness) εἰς (unto) τὴν (-) ἀνομίαν (lawlessness), οὕτως (so) νῦν (now) παραστήσατε (yield) τὰ (the) μέλη (members) ὑμῶν (of you) δοῦλα (in bondage) τῇ (-) δικαιοσύνῃ (to righteousness) εἰς (unto) ἁγιασμόν (sanctification).

¹¹ εἰ (If) δὲ (now) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τοῦ (of the One) ἐγείραντος (having raised up) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead) οἰκεῖ (dwells) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you), ὁ (the One) ἐγείρας (having raised up) «ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν» (the dead) Χριστὸν (Christ) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) ζωοποιήσει (will give life) καὶ (also) τὰ (to the) θνητὰ (mortal) σώματα (bodies) ὑμῶν (of you), διὰ (on account of) τοῦ (-) ἐνοικοῦντος (dwelling) αὐτοῦ (His) Πνεύματος (Spirit) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you).

¹ Παρακαλῶ (I exhort) οὖν (therefore) ὑμᾶς (you), ἀδελφοί (brothers), διὰ (through) τῶν (the) οἰκτιρμῶν (compassions) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), παραστῆσαι (to present) τὰ (the) σώματα (bodies) ὑμῶν (of you) θυσίαν (a sacrifice) ζῶσαν (living), ἁγίαν (holy), «τῷ (-) Θεῷ» (to God) εὐάρεστον (well-pleasing), τὴν (which is) λογικὴν (the reasonable) λατρείαν (service) ὑμῶν (of you). ² καὶ (And) μὴ (not) συσχηματίζεσθε (be conformed) τῷ (to the) αἰῶνι (age) τούτῳ (this), ἀλλὰ (but) μεταμορφοῦσθε (be transformed) τῇ (by the) ἀνακαινώσει (renewing) τοῦ (of the) νοός (mind), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) δοκιμάζειν (to prove) ὑμᾶς (by you), τί (what is) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), τὸ (-) ἀγαθὸν (good) καὶ (and) εὐάρεστον (well-pleasing) καὶ (and) τέλειον (perfect).

¹³ ὡς (As) ἐν (in) ἡμέρᾳ (daytime), εὐσχημόνως (properly) περιπατήσωμεν (we should walk), μὴ (not) κώμοις (in reveling) καὶ (and) μέθαις (drinking), μὴ (not) κοίταις (in sexual immorality) καὶ (and) ἀσελγείαις (sensuality), μὴ (not) ἔριδι (in dissension) καὶ (and) ζήλῳ (jealousy). ¹⁴ ἀλλὰ (But) ἐνδύσασθε (put on) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) Χριστόν (Christ), καὶ (and) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh) πρόνοιαν (provision) μὴ (not) ποιεῖσθε (make) εἰς (for) ἐπιθυμίας (desires).

¹⁴ ὁ (-) δὲ (And) Θεὸς (God) καὶ (both) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) ἤγειρεν (has raised up), καὶ (and) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐξεγερεῖ (will raise out), διὰ (by) τῆς (the) δυνάμεως (power) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

¹⁷ ὥστε (Therefore) εἴ (if) τις (anyone) ἐν (is in) Χριστῷ (Christ), καινὴ (he is a new) κτίσις (creation). τὰ (The) ἀρχαῖα (old things) παρῆλθεν (have passed away); ἰδοὺ (behold), γέγονεν (has come into being) καινά (the new).

⁴ καὶ (And) γὰρ (for) ἐσταυρώθη (He was crucified) ἐξ (in) ἀσθενείας (weakness), ἀλλὰ (yet) ζῇ (He lives) ἐκ (by) δυνάμεως (power) Θεοῦ (God’s). καὶ (Also) γὰρ (for) ἡμεῖς (we) ἀσθενοῦμεν (are weak) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him), ἀλλὰ (but) ζήσομεν (we will live) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him) ἐκ (by) δυνάμεως (power) Θεοῦ (God’s) εἰς (toward) ὑμᾶς (you).

¹⁵ οὔτε (Neither) γὰρ (for) περιτομή (circumcision) τί (anything) ἐστιν (is), οὔτε (nor) ἀκροβυστία (uncircumcision); ἀλλὰ (instead) καινὴ (a new) κτίσις (creation). ¹⁶ Καὶ (And) ὅσοι (as many as) τῷ (those who) κανόνι (rule) τούτῳ (by this) στοιχήσουσιν (will walk), εἰρήνη (peace be) ἐπ’ (upon) αὐτοὺς (them), καὶ (and) ἔλεος (mercy); καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (upon) τὸν (the) Ἰσραὴλ (Israel) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God).

¹⁹ καὶ (and) τί (what) τὸ (is the) ὑπερβάλλον (surpassing) μέγεθος (greatness) τῆς (of the) δυνάμεως (power) αὐτοῦ (of Him) εἰς (toward) ἡμᾶς (us), τοὺς (those) πιστεύοντας (believing) κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) ἐνέργειαν (working) τοῦ (of the) κράτους (might) τῆς (of the) ἰσχύος (strength) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ²⁰ ἣν (which) ἐνήργηκεν (He worked) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Χριστῷ (Christ), ἐγείρας (having raised) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead) καὶ (and) καθίσας (having set Him) ἐν (at) δεξιᾷ (the right hand) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ἐπουρανίοις (heavenly realms),

⁵ καὶ (even) ὄντας (being) ἡμᾶς (we) νεκροὺς (dead) τοῖς (-) παραπτώμασιν (in trespasses), συνεζωοποίησεν (made us alive with) τῷ (-) Χριστῷ (Christ) — χάριτί (by grace) ἐστε (you are) σεσῳσμένοι (saved) — ⁶ καὶ (and) συνήγειρεν (He raised us up together) καὶ (and) συνεκάθισεν (seated us together) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) ἐπουρανίοις (heavenly realms) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus),

¹⁷ Τοῦτο (This) οὖν (therefore) λέγω (I say) καὶ (and) μαρτύρομαι (testify) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord): μηκέτι (No longer) ὑμᾶς (are you) περιπατεῖν (to walk) καθὼς (as) καὶ (also) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles) περιπατεῖ (are walking), ἐν (in) ματαιότητι (the futility) τοῦ (of the) νοὸς (mind) αὐτῶν (of them),

²² ἀποθέσθαι (Are to have put off) ὑμᾶς (you), κατὰ (concerning) τὴν (the) προτέραν (former) ἀναστροφὴν (way of life), τὸν (the) παλαιὸν (old) ἄνθρωπον (man), τὸν (which) φθειρόμενον (is being corrupted), κατὰ (according to) τὰς (its) ἐπιθυμίας (desires) τῆς (-) ἀπάτης (of deceit), ²³ ἀνανεοῦσθαι (to be renewed) δὲ (then) τῷ (in the) πνεύματι (spirit) τοῦ (of the) νοὸς (mind) ὑμῶν (of you), ²⁴ καὶ (and) ἐνδύσασθαι (to have put on) τὸν (the) καινὸν (new) ἄνθρωπον (man), τὸν (-) κατὰ (according to) Θεὸν (God) κτισθέντα (having been created) ἐν (in) δικαιοσύνῃ (righteousness) καὶ (and) ὁσιότητι (holiness) τῆς (-) ἀληθείας (of truth).

⁸ Ἦτε (You were) γάρ (for) ποτε (once) σκότος (darkness); νῦν (now) δὲ (however), φῶς (light) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord); ὡς (as) τέκνα (children) φωτὸς (of light) περιπατεῖτε (walk)—

¹⁷ Συμμιμηταί (Imitators together) μου (of me) γίνεσθε (be), ἀδελφοί (brothers), καὶ (and) σκοπεῖτε (observe) τοὺς (those) οὕτω* (thus) περιπατοῦντας (walking), καθὼς (as) ἔχετε (you have) τύπον (for a pattern) ἡμᾶς (us). ¹⁸ πολλοὶ (Many) γὰρ (for) περιπατοῦσιν (are walking) — οὓς (of whom) πολλάκις (often) ἔλεγον (I told) ὑμῖν (you), νῦν (now) δὲ (indeed) καὶ (even) κλαίων (weeping) λέγω (I say) — τοὺς (-) ἐχθροὺς (as enemies) τοῦ (of the) σταυροῦ (cross) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ),

¹¹ ἐν (in) ᾧ (whom) καὶ (also) περιετμήθητε (you were circumcised) περιτομῇ (with the circumcision) ἀχειροποιήτῳ (made without hands), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀπεκδύσει (removal) τοῦ (of the) σώματος (body) τῆς (of the) σαρκός (flesh), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) περιτομῇ (circumcision) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), ¹² συνταφέντες (having been buried with) αὐτῷ (Him) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) βαπτισμῷ* (baptism), ἐν (in) ᾧ (which) καὶ (also) συνηγέρθητε (you were raised with Him) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) πίστεως (faith) τῆς (of the) ἐνεργείας (working) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), τοῦ (the One) ἐγείραντος (having raised) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead). ¹³ Καὶ (And) ὑμᾶς (you) νεκροὺς (dead) ὄντας (being) ‹ἐν› (in) τοῖς (the) παραπτώμασιν (trespasses) καὶ (and) τῇ (in the) ἀκροβυστίᾳ (uncircumcision) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh) ὑμῶν (of you), συνεζωοποίησεν (He made alive together) ὑμᾶς (you) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him), χαρισάμενος (having forgiven) ἡμῖν (us) πάντα (all) τὰ (the) παραπτώματα (transgressions),

¹ Εἰ (If) οὖν (then) συνηγέρθητε (you have been raised with) τῷ (-) Χριστῷ (Christ), τὰ (the things) ἄνω (above) ζητεῖτε (seek), οὗ (where) ὁ (-) Χριστός (Christ) ἐστιν (is) ἐν (at the) δεξιᾷ (right hand) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) καθήμενος (sitting). ² τὰ (The things) ἄνω (above) φρονεῖτε (set your minds on), μὴ (not) τὰ (the things) ἐπὶ (on) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth). ³ ἀπεθάνετε (You have died) γάρ (for), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) ὑμῶν (of you) κέκρυπται (has been hidden) σὺν (with) τῷ (-) Χριστῷ (Christ) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God).

¹⁰ καὶ (and) ἐνδυσάμενοι (having put on) τὸν (the) νέον (new), τὸν (the one) ἀνακαινούμενον (being renewed) εἰς (in) ἐπίγνωσιν (knowledge) κατ’ (according to) εἰκόνα (the image) τοῦ (of the one) κτίσαντος (having created) αὐτόν (him),

¹ Οἱ (-) κύριοι (Masters), τὸ (that which) δίκαιον (is righteous) καὶ (and) τὴν (that which) ἰσότητα (is equal), τοῖς (to the) δούλοις (slaves) παρέχεσθε (give), εἰδότες (knowing) ὅτι (that) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) ἔχετε (have) Κύριον (a Master) ἐν (in) οὐρανῷ (heaven).

¹ Χριστοῦ (Christ) οὖν (therefore) παθόντος (having suffered) σαρκὶ (in the flesh), καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) τὴν (the) αὐτὴν (same) ἔννοιαν (mind) ὁπλίσασθε (arm yourselves with), ὅτι (because) ὁ (the one) παθὼν (having suffered) σαρκὶ (in the flesh) πέπαυται (is done with) ἁμαρτίας (sin), ² εἰς (so as) τὸ (-) μηκέτι (no longer) ἀνθρώπων (to men’s) ἐπιθυμίαις (desires) ἀλλὰ (but) θελήματι (to the will) Θεοῦ (of God), τὸν (the) ἐπίλοιπον (remaining) ἐν (in) σαρκὶ (the flesh) βιῶσαι (to live) χρόνον (time).

⁴ δι’ (through) ὧν (which) τὰ (the) τίμια (precious) καὶ (and) μέγιστα (magnificent) ἡμῖν (to us) ἐπαγγέλματα (promises) δεδώρηται (He has given), ἵνα (so that) διὰ (through) τούτων (these) γένησθε (you might become) θείας (of the divine) κοινωνοὶ (partakers) φύσεως (nature), ἀποφυγόντες (having escaped) τῆς (the) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world) ἐν (in) ἐπιθυμίᾳ (desire), φθορᾶς (decay). ⁵ Καὶ (And) αὐτὸ (very reason) τοῦτο (for this) δὲ (now), σπουδὴν (earnestness) πᾶσαν (all) παρεισενέγκαντες (having brought in), ἐπιχορηγήσατε (supplement) ἐν (into) τῇ (the) πίστει (faith) ὑμῶν (of you) τὴν (-) ἀρετήν (virtue), ἐν (into) δὲ (and) τῇ (-) ἀρετῇ (virtue) τὴν (-) γνῶσιν (knowledge), ⁶ ἐν (into) δὲ (then) τῇ (-) γνώσει (knowledge) τὴν (-) ἐγκράτειαν (self-control), ἐν (into) δὲ (then) τῇ (-) ἐγκρατείᾳ (self-control) τὴν (-) ὑπομονήν (endurance), ἐν (into) δὲ (then) τῇ (-) ὑπομονῇ (endurance) τὴν (-) εὐσέβειαν (godliness), ⁷ ἐν (in) δὲ (then) τῇ (-) εὐσεβείᾳ (godliness) τὴν (-) φιλαδελφίαν (brotherly affection), ἐν (in) δὲ (then) τῇ (-) φιλαδελφίᾳ (brotherly affection) τὴν (-) ἀγάπην (love). ⁸ ταῦτα (These things) γὰρ (for) ὑμῖν (in you) ὑπάρχοντα (being) καὶ (and) πλεονάζοντα (abounding), οὐκ (neither) ἀργοὺς (idle) οὐδὲ (nor) ἀκάρπους (unfruitful) καθίστησιν (make you), εἰς (as to) τὴν (the) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), ἐπίγνωσιν (knowledge). ⁹ ᾧ (In whomever) γὰρ (for) μὴ (not) πάρεστιν (are present) ταῦτα (these things), τυφλός (blind) ἐστιν (he is), μυωπάζων (being short sighted), λήθην (forgetfulness) λαβὼν (having received) τοῦ (of the) καθαρισμοῦ (purification) τῶν (the) πάλαι (former) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἁμαρτιῶν (sins).

⁶ ὁ (The one) λέγων (claiming) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him) μένειν (to abide), ὀφείλει (ought) καθὼς (just as) ἐκεῖνος (that) περιεπάτησεν (walk) καὶ (also) αὐτὸς (He) οὕτως (in the same way) περιπατεῖν (walked).

¹³ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering) εἶπεν (He said), “Πᾶσα (Every) φυτεία (plant) ἣν (that) οὐκ (not) ἐφύτευσεν (has planted) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father) μου (of Me) ὁ (-) οὐράνιος (Heavenly), ἐκριζωθήσεται (it will be rooted up).

²⁴ ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) ὁ (the) κόκκος (grain) τοῦ (-) σίτου (of wheat), πεσὼν (having fallen) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) γῆν (ground), ἀποθάνῃ (should die), αὐτὸς (it) μόνος (alone) μένει (abides); ἐὰν (if) δὲ (however) ἀποθάνῃ (it should die), πολὺν (much) καρπὸν (fruit) φέρει (it bears).

¹ Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ἡ (the) ἄμπελος (vine) ἡ (-) ἀληθινή (true), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father) μου (of Me), ὁ (the) γεωργός (vinedresser) ἐστιν (is). ² πᾶν (Every) κλῆμα (branch) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me) μὴ (not) φέρον (bearing) καρπὸν (fruit), αἴρει (He takes away) αὐτό (it); καὶ (and) πᾶν (every one) τὸ (-) καρπὸν (fruit) φέρον (bearing), καθαίρει (He prunes) αὐτὸ (it), ἵνα (that) καρπὸν (fruit) πλείονα (more) φέρῃ (it may bear). ³ ἤδη (Already) ὑμεῖς (you) καθαροί (clean) ἐστε (are) διὰ (by reason of) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) ὃν (that) λελάληκα (I have spoken) ὑμῖν (to you). ⁴ μείνατε (Abide) ἐν (in) ἐμοί (Me), κἀγὼ (and I) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you). καθὼς (As) τὸ (the) κλῆμα (branch) οὐ (not) δύναται (is able) καρπὸν (fruit) φέρειν (to bear) ἀφ’ (of) ἑαυτοῦ (itself), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) μένῃ (it abide) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀμπέλῳ (vine), οὕτως (so) οὐδὲ (neither can) ὑμεῖς (you), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me) μένητε (you abide). ⁵ Ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ἡ (the) ἄμπελος (vine); ὑμεῖς (you are) τὰ (the) κλήματα (branches). ὁ (The one) μένων (abiding) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me), κἀγὼ (and I) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him), οὗτος (he) φέρει (bears) καρπὸν (fruit) πολύν (much). ὅτι (For) χωρὶς (apart from) ἐμοῦ (Me) οὐ (not) δύνασθε (you are able) ποιεῖν (to do) οὐδέν (nothing). ⁶ ἐὰν (If) μή (not) τις (anyone) μένῃ (abide) ἐν (in) ἐμοί (Me), ἐβλήθη (he is thrown) ἔξω (out) ὡς (like) τὸ (the) κλῆμα (branch) καὶ (and) ἐξηράνθη (is dried up), καὶ (and) συνάγουσιν (they gather) αὐτὰ (them) καὶ (and) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πῦρ (fire) βάλλουσιν (cast), καὶ (and) καίεται (it is burned). ⁷ ἐὰν (If) μείνητε (you abide) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) ῥήματά (words) μου (of Me) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you) μείνῃ (abide), ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) θέλητε (you wish), αἰτήσασθε (you shall ask), καὶ (and) γενήσεται (it will come to pass) ὑμῖν (to you). ⁸ ἐν (In) τούτῳ (this) ἐδοξάσθη (is glorified) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father) μου (of Me), ἵνα (that) καρπὸν (fruit) πολὺν (much) φέρητε (you should bear), καὶ (and) γένησθε* (you shall be) ἐμοὶ (to Me) μαθηταί (disciples).

⁸ Εἰ (If) δὲ (now) ἀπεθάνομεν (we died) σὺν (with) Χριστῷ (Christ), πιστεύομεν (we believe) ὅτι (that) καὶ (also) συζήσομεν* (we will live with) αὐτῷ (Him), ⁹ εἰδότες (knowing) ὅτι (that) Χριστὸς (Christ), ἐγερθεὶς (having been raised up) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead), οὐκέτι (no more) ἀποθνῄσκει (dies). θάνατος (Death) αὐτοῦ (Him) οὐκέτι (no longer) κυριεύει (rules over). ¹⁰ ὃ (That which) γὰρ (for) ἀπέθανεν (He died), τῇ (-) ἁμαρτίᾳ (to sin) ἀπέθανεν (He died) ἐφάπαξ (once for all); ὃ (that which) δὲ (however) ζῇ (He lives), ζῇ (He lives) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God). ¹¹ οὕτως (So) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you), λογίζεσθε (consider) ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves) εἶναι (to be) νεκροὺς (dead) μὲν (indeed) τῇ (-) ἁμαρτίᾳ (to sin), ζῶντας (living) δὲ (however) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus). ¹² Μὴ (Not) οὖν (therefore) βασιλευέτω (let reign) ἡ (-) ἁμαρτία (sin) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) θνητῷ (mortal) ὑμῶν (of you) σώματι (body), εἰς (in order) τὸ (-) ὑπακούειν (to obey) ταῖς (the) ἐπιθυμίαις (desires) αὐτοῦ (of it).

¹⁰ πάντοτε (always) τὴν (the) νέκρωσιν (death) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) ἐν (in) τῷ (our) σώματι (body) περιφέροντες (carrying around), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (also) ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) σώματι (body) ἡμῶν (of us) φανερωθῇ (should be manifested);

¹⁰ τοῦ (-) γνῶναι (to know) αὐτὸν (Him) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) δύναμιν (power) τῆς (of the) ἀναστάσεως (resurrection) αὐτοῦ (of Him), καὶ (and) [τὴν] (the) κοινωνίαν (fellowship) [τῶν] (of) παθημάτων (sufferings) αὐτοῦ (of Him), συμμορφιζόμενος (being conformed) τῷ (to the) θανάτῳ (death) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ¹¹ εἴ (if), πως (by any means), καταντήσω (I may attain) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) ἐξανάστασιν (resurrection) τὴν (-) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (dead).

³⁴ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) αὐτοῖς (them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ποιῶν (practicing) τὴν (the) ἁμαρτίαν (sin), δοῦλός (a slave) ἐστιν (is) τῆς (of the) ἁμαρτίας (sin). ³⁵ ὁ (-) δὲ (Now) δοῦλος (the slave) οὐ (not) μένει (abides) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) οἰκίᾳ (house) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age); ὁ (the) υἱὸς (son) μένει (abides) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age). ³⁶ ἐὰν (If) οὖν (therefore) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐλευθερώσῃ (shall set free), ὄντως (indeed) ἐλεύθεροι (free) ἔσεσθε (you will be).

¹² Μὴ (Not) οὖν (therefore) βασιλευέτω (let reign) ἡ (-) ἁμαρτία (sin) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) θνητῷ (mortal) ὑμῶν (of you) σώματι (body), εἰς (in order) τὸ (-) ὑπακούειν (to obey) ταῖς (the) ἐπιθυμίαις (desires) αὐτοῦ (of it).

²⁴ Ταλαίπωρος (O wretched) ἐγὼ (I am) ἄνθρωπος (man)! τίς (Who) με (me) ῥύσεται (will deliver) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) σώματος (body) τοῦ (-) θανάτου (of death) τούτου (this)? ²⁵ χάρις (Thanks be) [δὲ] (then) τῷ (to) Θεῷ (God), διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us)! Ἄρα (Then) οὖν (so), αὐτὸς (myself) ἐγὼ (I) τῷ (with the) μὲν (indeed) νοῒ (mind) δουλεύω (serve) νόμῳ (law) Θεοῦ (God’s), τῇ (-) δὲ (but with) σαρκὶ (the flesh) νόμῳ (the law) ἁμαρτίας (of sin).

³ τὸ (-) γὰρ (For) ἀδύνατον (powerless being) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law), ἐν (in) ᾧ (that) ἠσθένει (it was weak) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) σαρκός (flesh), ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God), τὸν (-) ἑαυτοῦ (of Himself) Υἱὸν (Son) πέμψας (having sent), ἐν (in) ὁμοιώματι (likeness) σαρκὸς (of flesh) ἁμαρτίας (of sin), καὶ (and) περὶ (for) ἁμαρτίας (sin), κατέκρινεν (condemned) τὴν (-) ἁμαρτίαν (sin) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σαρκί (flesh), ⁴ ἵνα (so that) τὸ (the) δικαίωμα (righteousness) τοῦ (of the) νόμου (law) πληρωθῇ (should be fulfilled) ἐν (in) ἡμῖν (us) τοῖς (-) μὴ (not) κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (the flesh) περιπατοῦσιν (walking), ἀλλὰ (but) κατὰ (according to) πνεῦμα (the Spirit).

¹³ εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (flesh) ζῆτε (you live), μέλλετε (you are about) ἀποθνήσκειν (to die); εἰ (if) δὲ (however) πνεύματι (by the Spirit) τὰς (the) πράξεις (deeds) τοῦ (of the) σώματος (body) θανατοῦτε (you put to death), ζήσεσθε (you will live).

²⁰ Χριστῷ (Christ) συνεσταύρωμαι (I have been crucified with); ζῶ (I live) δὲ (now), οὐκέτι (no longer) ἐγώ (I); ζῇ (lives) δὲ (however) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (me) Χριστός (Christ); ὃ (that which) δὲ (then) νῦν (now) ζῶ (I live) ἐν (in) σαρκί (the flesh), ἐν (through) πίστει (faith) ζῶ (I live), τῇ (that) τοῦ (from the) Υἱοῦ (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), τοῦ (the One) ἀγαπήσαντός (having loved) με (me) καὶ (and) παραδόντος (having given up) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) ὑπὲρ (for) ἐμοῦ (me).

²⁴ Οἱ (Those) δὲ (now) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), τὴν (the) σάρκα (flesh) ἐσταύρωσαν (have crucified) σὺν (with) τοῖς (its) παθήμασιν (passions) καὶ (and) ταῖς (-) ἐπιθυμίαις (desires).

²² ἀποθέσθαι (Are to have put off) ὑμᾶς (you), κατὰ (concerning) τὴν (the) προτέραν (former) ἀναστροφὴν (way of life), τὸν (the) παλαιὸν (old) ἄνθρωπον (man), τὸν (which) φθειρόμενον (is being corrupted), κατὰ (according to) τὰς (its) ἐπιθυμίας (desires) τῆς (-) ἀπάτης (of deceit),

¹¹ ἐν (in) ᾧ (whom) καὶ (also) περιετμήθητε (you were circumcised) περιτομῇ (with the circumcision) ἀχειροποιήτῳ (made without hands), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀπεκδύσει (removal) τοῦ (of the) σώματος (body) τῆς (of the) σαρκός (flesh), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) περιτομῇ (circumcision) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), ¹² συνταφέντες (having been buried with) αὐτῷ (Him) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) βαπτισμῷ* (baptism), ἐν (in) ᾧ (which) καὶ (also) συνηγέρθητε (you were raised with Him) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) πίστεως (faith) τῆς (of the) ἐνεργείας (working) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), τοῦ (the One) ἐγείραντος (having raised) αὐτὸν (Him) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead).

⁵ Νεκρώσατε (Put to death) οὖν (therefore) τὰ (the) μέλη (members) τὰ (which are) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth): πορνείαν (sexual immorality), ἀκαθαρσίαν (impurity), πάθος (passion), ἐπιθυμίαν (desire) κακήν (evil), καὶ (and) τὴν (-) πλεονεξίαν (covetousness), ἥτις (which) ἐστὶν (is) εἰδωλολατρία (idolatry),

⁹ Μὴ (Not) ψεύδεσθε (do lie) εἰς (to) ἀλλήλους (one another), ἀπεκδυσάμενοι (having put off) τὸν (the) παλαιὸν (old) ἄνθρωπον (man) σὺν (with) ταῖς (the) πράξεσιν (practices) αὐτοῦ (of him), ¹⁰ καὶ (and) ἐνδυσάμενοι (having put on) τὸν (the) νέον (new), τὸν (the one) ἀνακαινούμενον (being renewed) εἰς (in) ἐπίγνωσιν (knowledge) κατ’ (according to) εἰκόνα (the image) τοῦ (of the one) κτίσαντος (having created) αὐτόν (him),

² μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)! οἵτινες (Who) ἀπεθάνομεν (we died) τῇ (-) ἁμαρτίᾳ (to sin), πῶς (how) ἔτι (still) ζήσομεν (shall we live) ἐν (in) αὐτῇ (it)?

² ἡ (The) γὰρ (for) ὕπανδρος (married) γυνὴ (woman), τῷ (to the) ζῶντι (living) ἀνδρὶ (husband) δέδεται (is bound) νόμῳ (by law); ἐὰν (if) δὲ (however) ἀποθάνῃ (should die) ὁ (the) ἀνήρ (husband), κατήργηται (she is cleared) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law) τοῦ (of the) ἀνδρός (husband).

¹ Οὐδὲν (There is no) ἄρα (therefore) νῦν (now) κατάκριμα (condemnation) τοῖς (to those) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).

¹ Χριστοῦ (Christ) οὖν (therefore) παθόντος (having suffered) σαρκὶ (in the flesh), καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) τὴν (the) αὐτὴν (same) ἔννοιαν (mind) ὁπλίσασθε (arm yourselves with), ὅτι (because) ὁ (the one) παθὼν (having suffered) σαρκὶ (in the flesh) πέπαυται (is done with) ἁμαρτίας (sin),

¹⁹ ἔτι (Yet) μικρὸν (a little while) καὶ (and) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) με (Me) οὐκέτι (no more) θεωρεῖ (sees), ὑμεῖς (you) δὲ (however) θεωρεῖτέ (see) με (Me); ὅτι (because) ἐγὼ (I) ζῶ (live), καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) ζήσετε (will live).

³ ἢ (Or) ἀγνοεῖτε (are you unaware) ὅτι (that) ὅσοι (as many as) ἐβαπτίσθημεν (have been baptized) εἰς (into) Χριστὸν (Christ) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), εἰς (into) τὸν (the) θάνατον (death) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐβαπτίσθημεν (have been baptized)?

¹⁰ πάντοτε (always) τὴν (the) νέκρωσιν (death) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) ἐν (in) τῷ (our) σώματι (body) περιφέροντες (carrying around), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (also) ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) σώματι (body) ἡμῶν (of us) φανερωθῇ (should be manifested); ¹¹ ἀεὶ (always) γὰρ (for) ἡμεῖς (we) οἱ (the) ζῶντες (living) εἰς (to) θάνατον (death) παραδιδόμεθα (are being delivered) διὰ (on account of) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), ἵνα (so that) καὶ (also) ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) φανερωθῇ (may be manifested) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) θνητῇ (mortal) σαρκὶ (flesh) ἡμῶν (of us). ¹² ὥστε (So then), ὁ (-) θάνατος (death) ἐν (in) ἡμῖν (us) ἐνεργεῖται (works), ἡ (-) δὲ (but) ζωὴ (life) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you). ¹³ Ἔχοντες (Having) δὲ (however) τὸ (the) αὐτὸ (same) πνεῦμα (spirit) τῆς (-) πίστεως (of faith), κατὰ (according to) τὸ (that) γεγραμμένον (having been written): “Ἐπίστευσα (I believed), διὸ (therefore) ἐλάλησα (I have spoken),” καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we) πιστεύομεν (believe), διὸ (therefore) καὶ (also) λαλοῦμεν (speak), ¹⁴ εἰδότες (knowing) ὅτι (that) ὁ (the One) ἐγείρας (having raised up) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), καὶ (also) ἡμᾶς (us) σὺν (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) ἐγερεῖ (will raise up) καὶ (and) παραστήσει (will present us) σὺν (with) ὑμῖν (you).

³ ἀπεθάνετε (You have died) γάρ (for), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) ὑμῶν (of you) κέκρυπται (has been hidden) σὺν (with) τῷ (-) Χριστῷ (Christ) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God). ⁴ ὅταν (When) ὁ (-) Χριστὸς (Christ) φανερωθῇ (may be revealed), ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) ὑμῶν* (of you), τότε (then) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him) φανερωθήσεσθε (will appear) ἐν (in) δόξῃ (glory).

¹⁴ εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) πιστεύομεν (we believe) ὅτι (that) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἀπέθανεν (died) καὶ (and) ἀνέστη (rose again), οὕτως (so) καὶ (also) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God), τοὺς (those) κοιμηθέντας (having fallen asleep) διὰ (through) τοῦ (-) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), ἄξει (will bring) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him). ¹⁵ Τοῦτο (This) γὰρ (for) ὑμῖν (to you) λέγομεν (we declare) ἐν (in) λόγῳ (the word) Κυρίου (of the Lord), ὅτι (that) ἡμεῖς (we) οἱ (the) ζῶντες (living) οἱ (-) περιλειπόμενοι (remaining), εἰς (unto) τὴν (the) παρουσίαν (coming) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) φθάσωμεν (shall precede) τοὺς (those) κοιμηθέντας (having fallen asleep), ¹⁶ ὅτι (because) αὐτὸς (Himself) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) ἐν (with) κελεύσματι (a loud command), ἐν (with) φωνῇ (the voice) ἀρχαγγέλου (of an archangel), καὶ (and) ἐν (with) σάλπιγγι (the trumpet) Θεοῦ (of God), καταβήσεται (will descend) ἀπ’ (from) οὐρανοῦ (heaven), καὶ (and) οἱ (the) νεκροὶ (dead) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) ἀναστήσονται (will rise) πρῶτον (first). ¹⁷ ἔπειτα (Then) ἡμεῖς (we) οἱ (the) ζῶντες (living) οἱ (-) περιλειπόμενοι (remaining), ἅμα (together) σὺν (with) αὐτοῖς (them), ἁρπαγησόμεθα (will be caught away) ἐν (in) νεφέλαις (the clouds) εἰς (for) ἀπάντησιν (the meeting) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) εἰς (in) ἀέρα (the air); καὶ (and) οὕτως (so) πάντοτε (always) σὺν (with) Κυρίῳ (the Lord) ἐσόμεθα (we will be).

¹¹ Πιστὸς (Trustworthy is) ὁ (the) λόγος (saying): Εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) συναπεθάνομεν (we have died together with Him), καὶ (also) συζήσομεν (we will live together with Him); ¹² εἰ (if) ὑπομένομεν (we endure), καὶ (also) συμβασιλεύσομεν* (we will reign together with Him); εἰ (if) ἀρνησόμεθα (we will deny Him), κἀκεῖνος (He also) ἀρνήσεται (will deny) ἡμᾶς (us);

²⁴ ὃν (whom) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ἀνέστησεν (raised up), λύσας (having loosed) τὰς (the) ὠδῖνας (agony) τοῦ (of) θανάτου (death), καθότι (inasmuch as) οὐκ (not) ἦν (it was) δυνατὸν (possible) κρατεῖσθαι (for to be held) αὐτὸν (Him) ὑπ’ (by) αὐτοῦ (it). ²⁵ Δαυὶδ (David) γὰρ (for) λέγει (says) εἰς (about) αὐτόν (Him): ‘Προορώμην (I foresaw) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) ἐνώπιόν (before) μου (me) διὰ (continually) παντός (everything), ὅτι (because) ἐκ (at the) δεξιῶν (right hand) μού (of me) ἐστιν (He is), ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) σαλευθῶ (I should be shaken). ²⁶ διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this) ηὐφράνθη (was glad) μου (of me) «ἡ (the) καρδία» (heart), καὶ (and) ἠγαλλιάσατο (rejoiced) ἡ (the) γλῶσσά (tongue) μου (of me); ἔτι (and) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) ἡ (the) σάρξ (flesh) μου (of me) κατασκηνώσει (will dwell) ἐπ’ (in) ἐλπίδι (hope), ²⁷ ὅτι (for) οὐκ (not) ἐνκαταλείψεις (You will abandon) τὴν (the) ψυχήν (soul) μου (of me) εἰς (into) ᾅδην (Hades), οὐδὲ (nor) δώσεις (will You allow) τὸν (the) Ὅσιόν (Holy One) σου (of You) ἰδεῖν (to see) διαφθοράν (decay). ²⁸ ἐγνώρισάς (You have made known) μοι (to me) ὁδοὺς (the paths) ζωῆς (of life); πληρώσεις (You will fill) με (me) εὐφροσύνης (with joy) μετὰ (in) τοῦ (the) προσώπου (presence) σου (of You).’

¹⁴ ἀλλὰ (Nevertheless) ἐβασίλευσεν (reigned) ὁ (-) θάνατος (death) ἀπὸ (from) Ἀδὰμ (Adam) μέχρι (until) Μωϋσέως (Moses), καὶ (even) ἐπὶ (over) τοὺς (those) μὴ (not) ἁμαρτήσαντας (having sinned) ἐπὶ (in) τῷ (the) ὁμοιώματι (likeness) τῆς (of the) παραβάσεως (transgression) Ἀδάμ (of Adam), ὅς (who) ἐστιν (is) τύπος (a type) τοῦ (of the) μέλλοντος (coming One).

¹⁴ ἁμαρτία (Sin) γὰρ (for) ὑμῶν (you) οὐ (not) κυριεύσει (will rule over), οὐ (not) γάρ (for) ἐστε (you are) ὑπὸ (under) νόμον (law), ἀλλὰ (but) ὑπὸ (under) χάριν (grace).

¹⁴ Ἐπεὶ (Since) οὖν (therefore) τὰ (the) παιδία (children) κεκοινώνηκεν (have partaken) αἵματος (of blood) καὶ (and) σαρκός (of flesh) καὶ (also), αὐτὸς (He) παραπλησίως (likewise) μετέσχεν (took part in) τῶν (the) αὐτῶν (same things), ἵνα (so that) διὰ (through) τοῦ (His) θανάτου (death), καταργήσῃ (He might destroy) τὸν (the one) τὸ (the) κράτος (power) ἔχοντα (holding) τοῦ (-) θανάτου (of death), τοῦτ’ (that) ἔστιν (is), τὸν (the) διάβολον (devil), ¹⁵ καὶ (and) ἀπαλλάξῃ (might set free) τούτους (those) ὅσοι (who) φόβῳ (fear) θανάτου (of death) διὰ (through) παντὸς (all) τοῦ (their time) ζῆν (to live), ἔνοχοι (subject) ἦσαν (were) δουλείας (to slavery).

¹⁶ ὃς (who) οὐ (not) κατὰ (according to) νόμον (a law) ἐντολῆς (of a commandment) σαρκίνης (fleshly) γέγονεν (has been constituted), ἀλλὰ (but) κατὰ (according to) δύναμιν (the power) ζωῆς (of a life) ἀκαταλύτου (indestructible).

²⁵ ὅθεν (wherefore) καὶ (also), σῴζειν (to save) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) παντελὲς (uttermost) δύναται (He is able), τοὺς (those) προσερχομένους (drawing near) δι’ (through) αὐτοῦ (Him) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), πάντοτε (always) ζῶν (living) εἰς (for) τὸ (-) ἐντυγχάνειν (to intercede) ὑπὲρ (for) αὐτῶν (them).

¹² οὗτος (This One) δὲ (however), μίαν (one) ὑπὲρ (for) ἁμαρτιῶν (sins) προσενέγκας (having offered) θυσίαν (sacrifice) εἰς (in) τὸ (-) διηνεκὲς (perpetuity), ἐκάθισεν (sat down) ἐν (at) δεξιᾷ (the right hand) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ¹³ τὸ (the) λοιπὸν (henceforth) ἐκδεχόμενος (awaiting) ἕως (until) τεθῶσιν (should be placed) οἱ (the) ἐχθροὶ (enemies) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ὑποπόδιον (as a footstool) τῶν (for the) ποδῶν (feet) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

¹⁸ καὶ (and) ὁ (the) Ζῶν (Living One); καὶ (and) ἐγενόμην (I was) νεκρὸς (dead), καὶ (and) ἰδοὺ (behold) ζῶν (living) εἰμι (I am) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (ages) τῶν (of the) αἰώνων (ages), καὶ (and) ἔχω (I have) τὰς (the) κλεῖς (keys) τοῦ (of) θανάτου (Death) καὶ (and) τοῦ (of) ᾅδου (Hades).

³⁸ Θεὸς (God) δὲ (now) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (He is) νεκρῶν (of the dead), ἀλλὰ (but) ζώντων (of the living); πάντες (all) γὰρ (for) αὐτῷ (to Him) ζῶσιν (live).”

¹¹ οὕτως (So) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you), λογίζεσθε (consider) ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves) εἶναι (to be) νεκροὺς (dead) μὲν (indeed) τῇ (-) ἁμαρτίᾳ (to sin), ζῶντας (living) δὲ (however) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).

⁷ Οὐδεὶς (No one) γὰρ (for) ἡμῶν (of us) ἑαυτῷ (to himself) ζῇ (lives), καὶ (and) οὐδεὶς (no one) ἑαυτῷ (to himself) ἀποθνῄσκει (dies). ⁸ ἐάν (If) τε (both) γὰρ (for) ζῶμεν (we should live), τῷ (to the) Κυρίῳ (Lord) ζῶμεν (we live); ἐάν (if) τε (also) ἀποθνήσκωμεν (we should die), τῷ (to the) Κυρίῳ (Lord) ἀποθνήσκομεν (we die). ἐάν (If) τε (both) οὖν (therefore) ζῶμεν (we should live), ἐάν (if) τε (also) ἀποθνήσκωμεν (we should die), τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord’s) ἐσμέν (we are). ⁹ εἰς (Unto) τοῦτο (this) γὰρ (for), Χριστὸς (Christ) ἀπέθανεν (died) καὶ (and) ἔζησεν (lived again), ἵνα (that) καὶ (both the) νεκρῶν (dead) καὶ (and) ζώντων (living) κυριεύσῃ (He might rule over).

¹⁵ καὶ (And) ὑπὲρ (for) πάντων (all) ἀπέθανεν (He died), ἵνα (that) οἱ (those) ζῶντες (living), μηκέτι (no longer) ἑαυτοῖς (to themselves) ζῶσιν (should live), ἀλλὰ (but) τῷ (to the One) ὑπὲρ (for) αὐτῶν (them) ἀποθανόντι (having died) καὶ (and) ἐγερθέντι (having been raised again).

²¹ τὸν (The One) μὴ (not) γνόντα (having known) ἁμαρτίαν (sin), ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us) ἁμαρτίαν (sin) ἐποίησεν (He made), ἵνα (so that) ἡμεῖς (we) γενώμεθα (might become) δικαιοσύνη (the righteousness) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him).

²⁶ Ἐπεὶ (Otherwise) ἔδει (it was necessary for) αὐτὸν (Him) πολλάκις (repeatedly) παθεῖν (to have suffered) ἀπὸ (from) καταβολῆς (the foundation) κόσμου (of the world). νυνὶ (Now) δὲ (however) ἅπαξ (once) ἐπὶ (in) συντελείᾳ (the consummation) τῶν (of the) αἰώνων (ages), εἰς (for) ἀθέτησιν (the putting away) τῆς (of) ἁμαρτίας (sin), διὰ (by) τῆς (the) θυσίας (sacrifice) αὐτοῦ (of Himself) πεφανέρωται (He has been revealed). ²⁷ Καὶ (And) καθ’ (in) ὅσον (as much as) ἀπόκειται (it is apportioned) τοῖς (-) ἀνθρώποις (to men) ἅπαξ (once) ἀποθανεῖν (to die), μετὰ (after) δὲ (then) τοῦτο (this) κρίσις (to face judgment), ²⁸ οὕτως (so) καὶ (also) ὁ (-) Χριστός (Christ), ἅπαξ (once) προσενεχθεὶς (having been offered) εἰς (in order) τὸ (-) πολλῶν (of many) ἀνενεγκεῖν (to bear) ἁμαρτίας (the sins), ἐκ (for) δευτέρου (a second time), χωρὶς (apart from) ἁμαρτίας (sin), ὀφθήσεται (will appear) τοῖς (to those) αὐτὸν (Him) ἀπεκδεχομένοις (awaiting) εἰς (for) σωτηρίαν (salvation).

¹⁸ ὅτι (because) καὶ (also) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἅπαξ (once) περὶ (for) ἁμαρτιῶν (sins) ἔπαθεν* (suffered), δίκαιος (the righteous) ὑπὲρ (for) ἀδίκων (the unrighteous), ἵνα (so that) ὑμᾶς (you) προσαγάγῃ (He might bring) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), θανατωθεὶς (having been put to death) μὲν (indeed) σαρκὶ (in the flesh), ζωοποιηθεὶς (having been made alive) δὲ (however) πνεύματι (in the spirit),

⁶ εἰς (To) τοῦτο (this end) γὰρ (indeed), καὶ (even) νεκροῖς (to the dead) εὐηγγελίσθη (the gospel was proclaimed), ἵνα (so that) κριθῶσι (they might be judged) μὲν (indeed) κατὰ (according to) ἀνθρώπους (men) σαρκί (in the flesh); ζῶσι (they might live) δὲ (however) κατὰ (according to) Θεὸν (God) πνεύματι (in the spirit).

³¹ ταῦτα (these) δὲ (however) γέγραπται (have been written) ἵνα (that) πιστεύητε (you may believe) ὅτι (that) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) Χριστὸς (Christ), ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), καὶ (and) ἵνα (that) πιστεύοντες (believing), ζωὴν (life) ἔχητε (you may have) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματι (name) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

¹⁸ Λογίζομαι (I reckon) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) οὐκ (not) ἄξια (comparable) τὰ (the) παθήματα (sufferings) τοῦ (of the) νῦν (present) καιροῦ (time are) πρὸς (to) τὴν (the) μέλλουσαν (coming) δόξαν (glory) ἀποκαλυφθῆναι (to be revealed) εἰς (to) ἡμᾶς (us).

²⁷ μόνῳ (to the only) σοφῷ (wise) Θεῷ (God), διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) ᾧ (which is), ἡ (be the) δόξα (glory) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (ages) 〈τῶν (of the) αἰώνων〉 (ages), ἀμήν (Amen).

²⁰ ἠγοράσθητε (you were bought) γὰρ (for) τιμῆς (with a price); δοξάσατε (glorify) δὴ (therefore) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) σώματι (body) ὑμῶν (of you).

¹⁹ ἐγὼ (I) γὰρ (for), διὰ (through) νόμου (the Law) νόμῳ (to the Law) ἀπέθανον (died), ἵνα (that) Θεῷ (to God) ζήσω (I might live). ²⁰ Χριστῷ (Christ) συνεσταύρωμαι (I have been crucified with); ζῶ (I live) δὲ (now), οὐκέτι (no longer) ἐγώ (I); ζῇ (lives) δὲ (however) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (me) Χριστός (Christ); ὃ (that which) δὲ (then) νῦν (now) ζῶ (I live) ἐν (in) σαρκί (the flesh), ἐν (through) πίστει (faith) ζῶ (I live), τῇ (that) τοῦ (from the) Υἱοῦ (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), τοῦ (the One) ἀγαπήσαντός (having loved) με (me) καὶ (and) παραδόντος (having given up) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) ὑπὲρ (for) ἐμοῦ (me).

⁷ ἵνα (in order that) ἐνδείξηται (He might show) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) αἰῶσιν (ages) τοῖς (that) ἐπερχομένοις (are coming) τὸ (the) ὑπερβάλλον (surpassing) πλοῦτος (riches) τῆς (of the) χάριτος (grace) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐν (in) χρηστότητι (kindness) ἐφ’ (toward) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).

¹¹ πεπληρωμένοι (being filled) καρπὸν (with the fruit) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness) τὸν (that is) διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), εἰς (to) δόξαν (the glory) καὶ (and) ἔπαινον (praise) Θεοῦ (of God).

⁷ καὶ (And) ἡ (the) εἰρήνη (peace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἡ (-) ὑπερέχουσα (surpassing) πάντα (all) νοῦν (understanding) φρουρήσει (will guard) τὰς (the) καρδίας (hearts) ὑμῶν (of you) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) νοήματα (minds) ὑμῶν (of you) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).

³ ἀπεθάνετε (You have died) γάρ (for), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) ὑμῶν (of you) κέκρυπται (has been hidden) σὺν (with) τῷ (-) Χριστῷ (Christ) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (God). ⁴ ὅταν (When) ὁ (-) Χριστὸς (Christ) φανερωθῇ (may be revealed), ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) ὑμῶν* (of you), τότε (then) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him) φανερωθήσεσθε (will appear) ἐν (in) δόξῃ (glory). ⁵ Νεκρώσατε (Put to death) οὖν (therefore) τὰ (the) μέλη (members) τὰ (which are) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth): πορνείαν (sexual immorality), ἀκαθαρσίαν (impurity), πάθος (passion), ἐπιθυμίαν (desire) κακήν (evil), καὶ (and) τὴν (-) πλεονεξίαν (covetousness), ἥτις (which) ἐστὶν (is) εἰδωλολατρία (idolatry),

¹⁷ καὶ (And) πᾶν (everything), ὅ (which) τι (what) ἐὰν (if) ποιῆτε (you might do) ἐν (in) λόγῳ (word) ἢ (or) ἐν (in) ἔργῳ (deed), πάντα (all) ἐν (in) ὀνόματι (the name) Κυρίου (of the Lord) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), εὐχαριστοῦντες (giving thanks) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God) Πατρὶ (the Father) δι’ (through) αὐτοῦ (Him).

⁵ καὶ (also) αὐτοὶ (you yourselves) ὡς (as) λίθοι (stones) ζῶντες (living), οἰκοδομεῖσθε (are being built up) οἶκος (as a house) πνευματικὸς (spiritual) εἰς (into) ἱεράτευμα (a priesthood) ἅγιον (holy), ἀνενέγκαι (to offer) πνευματικὰς (spiritual) θυσίας (sacrifices) εὐπροσδέκτους (acceptable) [τῷ] (-) Θεῷ (to God) διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ).

¹¹ εἴ (if) τις (anyone) λαλεῖ (speaks), ὡς (as) λόγια (oracles) Θεοῦ (of God); εἴ (if) τις (anyone) διακονεῖ (serves), ὡς (as) ἐξ (of) ἰσχύος (strength) ἧς (which) χορηγεῖ (supplies) ὁ (-) Θεός (God), ἵνα (so that) ἐν (in) πᾶσιν (all things) δοξάζηται (may be glorified) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), ᾧ (to whom) ἐστιν (be) ἡ (the) δόξα (glory) καὶ (and) τὸ (the) κράτος (power) εἰς (to) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (ages) τῶν (of the) αἰώνων (ages). ἀμήν (Amen).

⁸ τοῖς (to those) δὲ (however) ἐξ (of) ἐριθείας (self-interest) καὶ (and) ἀπειθοῦσι (disobeying) τῇ (the) ἀληθείᾳ (truth), πειθομένοις (being persuaded about) δὲ (however) τῇ (-) ἀδικίᾳ (unrighteousness), ὀργὴ (wrath) καὶ (and) θυμός (anger);

²¹ ἵνα (so that) ὥσπερ (just as) ἐβασίλευσεν (reigned) ἡ (the) ἁμαρτία (sin) ἐν (in) τῷ (-) θανάτῳ (death), οὕτως (so) καὶ (also) ἡ (-) χάρις (grace) βασιλεύσῃ (might reign) διὰ (through) δικαιοσύνης (righteousness), εἰς (unto) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal), διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us).

²³ βλέπω (I see) δὲ (however) ἕτερον (another) νόμον (law) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) μέλεσίν (members) μου (of me), ἀντιστρατευόμενον (warring against) τῷ (the) νόμῳ (law) τοῦ (of the) νοός (mind) μου (of me), καὶ (and) αἰχμαλωτίζοντά (making captive) με (me) ἐν (to) τῷ (the) νόμῳ (law) τῆς (-) ἁμαρτίας (of sin), τῷ (-) ὄντι (being) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) μέλεσίν (members) μου (of me). ²⁴ Ταλαίπωρος (O wretched) ἐγὼ (I am) ἄνθρωπος (man)! τίς (Who) με (me) ῥύσεται (will deliver) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) σώματος (body) τοῦ (-) θανάτου (of death) τούτου (this)?

¹⁴ ἀλλὰ (But) ἐνδύσασθε (put on) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus) Χριστόν (Christ), καὶ (and) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh) πρόνοιαν (provision) μὴ (not) ποιεῖσθε (make) εἰς (for) ἐπιθυμίας (desires).

⁵³ δεῖ (It behooves) γὰρ (for) τὸ (the) φθαρτὸν (perishable) τοῦτο (this), ἐνδύσασθαι (to put on) ἀφθαρσίαν (imperishable); καὶ (and) τὸ (the) θνητὸν (mortal) τοῦτο (this), ἐνδύσασθαι (to put on) ἀθανασίαν (immortality). ⁵⁴ Ὅταν (When) δὲ (now) τὸ (the) φθαρτὸν (perishable) τοῦτο (this) ἐνδύσηται (shall have put on) (τὴν) (the) ἀφθαρσίαν (imperishable), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) θνητὸν (mortal) τοῦτο (this) ἐνδύσηται (shall have put on) ἀθανασίαν (immortality), τότε (then) γενήσεται (will come to pass) ὁ (the) λόγος (word) ὁ (-) γεγραμμένος (having been written): “Κατεπόθη (Has been swallowed up) ὁ (-) θάνατος (death) εἰς (in) νῖκος (victory).”

¹² παιδεύουσα (instructing) ἡμᾶς (us) ἵνα (that), ἀρνησάμενοι (having denied) τὴν (-) ἀσέβειαν (ungodliness) καὶ (and) τὰς (-) κοσμικὰς (worldly) ἐπιθυμίας (passions), σωφρόνως (discreetly) καὶ (and) δικαίως (righteously) καὶ (and) εὐσεβῶς (piously) ζήσωμεν (we should live) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) νῦν (present) αἰῶνι (age),

¹⁴ ἕκαστος (A man) δὲ (however) πειράζεται (is tempted), ὑπὸ (by) τῆς (the) ἰδίας (own) ἐπιθυμίας (desire) ἐξελκόμενος (being drawn away) καὶ (and) δελεαζόμενος (being enticed). ¹⁵ εἶτα (Then) ἡ (-) ἐπιθυμία (desire), συλλαβοῦσα (having conceived), τίκτει (gives birth to) ἁμαρτίαν (sin); ἡ (-) δὲ (and) ἁμαρτία (sin) ἀποτελεσθεῖσα (having become fully grown), ἀποκύει (brings forth) θάνατον (death).

¹ Πόθεν (From where) πόλεμοι (come disputes) καὶ (and) πόθεν (from where) μάχαι (quarrels) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you)? οὐκ (Is it not) ἐντεῦθεν (from there), ἐκ (out of) τῶν (the) ἡδονῶν (passions) ὑμῶν (of you) τῶν (-) στρατευομένων (warring) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) μέλεσιν (members) ὑμῶν (of you)? ² ἐπιθυμεῖτε (You desire), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἔχετε (have); φονεύετε (you kill) καὶ (and) ζηλοῦτε (covet), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) δύνασθε (are able) ἐπιτυχεῖν (to obtain); μάχεσθε (You quarrel) καὶ (and) πολεμεῖτε (wrangle). οὐκ (Not) ἔχετε (you have), διὰ (because) τὸ (-) μὴ (not) αἰτεῖσθαι (ask) ὑμᾶς (you). ³ αἰτεῖτε (You ask) καὶ (and) οὐ (not) λαμβάνετε (receive), διότι (because) κακῶς (wrongly) αἰτεῖσθε (you ask), ἵνα (that) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἡδοναῖς (pleasures) ὑμῶν (of you), δαπανήσητε (you may spend it).

¹⁶ Οὗτοί (These) εἰσιν (are) γογγυσταί (grumblers), μεμψίμοιροι (discontented), κατὰ (after) τὰς (the) ἐπιθυμίας (lusts) αὐτῶν (own) πορευόμενοι (following); καὶ (and) τὸ (the) στόμα (mouth) αὐτῶν (of them) λαλεῖ (speaks) ὑπέρογκα (great swelling words), θαυμάζοντες (flattering) πρόσωπα (faces) ὠφελείας (profit) χάριν (for the sake of).

¹⁸ ὅτι (that) ἔλεγον (they were saying) ὑμῖν (to you), “Ἐπ’ (In) ἐσχάτου (the last) τοῦ (-) χρόνου (time) ἔσονται (there will be) ἐμπαῖκται (scoffers), κατὰ (after) τὰς (-) ἑαυτῶν (their own) ἐπιθυμίας (passions) πορευόμενοι (following), τῶν (-) ἀσεβειῶν (of ungodlinesses).”

²⁴ ὅτι (For) οὗτος (this) ὁ (-) υἱός (son) μου (of mine) νεκρὸς (dead) ἦν (was), καὶ (and) ἀνέζησεν (is alive again); ἦν (he was) ἀπολωλὼς (lost), καὶ (and) εὑρέθη (is found).’ καὶ (And) ἤρξαντο (they began) εὐφραίνεσθαι (to be merry).

³² εὐφρανθῆναι (To make merry) δὲ (however) καὶ (and) χαρῆναι (to rejoice) ἔδει (it was fitting), ὅτι (because) ὁ (the) ἀδελφός (brother) σου (of you) οὗτος (this), νεκρὸς (dead) ἦν (was), καὶ (and) ἔζησεν (is alive again); καὶ (and) ἀπολωλὼς (he was lost), καὶ (and) εὑρέθη (is found).’”

⁸ τοῖς (to those) δὲ (however) ἐξ (of) ἐριθείας (self-interest) καὶ (and) ἀπειθοῦσι (disobeying) τῇ (the) ἀληθείᾳ (truth), πειθομένοις (being persuaded about) δὲ (however) τῇ (-) ἀδικίᾳ (unrighteousness), ὀργὴ (wrath) καὶ (and) θυμός (anger); ⁹ θλῖψις (tribulation) καὶ (and) στενοχωρία (distress) ἐπὶ (upon) πᾶσαν (every) ψυχὴν (soul) ἀνθρώπου (of man) τοῦ (-) κατεργαζομένου (working) τὸ (-) κακόν (evil), Ἰουδαίου (of Jewish) τε (both) πρῶτον (first), καὶ (and also) Ἕλληνος (of Greek);

⁵ ὅτε (While) γὰρ (for) ἦμεν (we were) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σαρκί (flesh), τὰ (the) παθήματα (passions) τῶν (-) ἁμαρτιῶν (of sins) τὰ (that were) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law) ἐνηργεῖτο (were at work) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) μέλεσιν (members) ἡμῶν (of us), εἰς (to) τὸ (the) καρποφορῆσαι (bringing forth of fruit) τῷ (-) θανάτῳ (to death).

²³ βλέπω (I see) δὲ (however) ἕτερον (another) νόμον (law) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) μέλεσίν (members) μου (of me), ἀντιστρατευόμενον (warring against) τῷ (the) νόμῳ (law) τοῦ (of the) νοός (mind) μου (of me), καὶ (and) αἰχμαλωτίζοντά (making captive) με (me) ἐν (to) τῷ (the) νόμῳ (law) τῆς (-) ἁμαρτίας (of sin), τῷ (-) ὄντι (being) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) μέλεσίν (members) μου (of me).

¹ Παρακαλῶ (I exhort) οὖν (therefore) ὑμᾶς (you), ἀδελφοί (brothers), διὰ (through) τῶν (the) οἰκτιρμῶν (compassions) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), παραστῆσαι (to present) τὰ (the) σώματα (bodies) ὑμῶν (of you) θυσίαν (a sacrifice) ζῶσαν (living), ἁγίαν (holy), «τῷ (-) Θεῷ» (to God) εὐάρεστον (well-pleasing), τὴν (which is) λογικὴν (the reasonable) λατρείαν (service) ὑμῶν (of you).

¹⁵ Οὐκ (Not) οἴδατε (know you) ὅτι (that) τὰ (the) σώματα (bodies) ὑμῶν (of you) μέλη (members) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) ἐστιν (are)? ἄρας (Having taken) οὖν (then) τὰ (the) μέλη (members) τοῦ (of the) Χριστοῦ (Christ), ποιήσω (shall I make) πόρνης (them of a prostitute) μέλη (members)? μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)!

⁵ καὶ (And) οὐ (not only) καθὼς (as) ἠλπίσαμεν (we had hoped), ἀλλ’* (but) ἑαυτοὺς (themselves) ἔδωκαν (they gave), πρῶτον (first) τῷ (to the) Κυρίῳ (Lord), καὶ (and then) ἡμῖν (to us), διὰ (by the) θελήματος (will) Θεοῦ (of God).

⁴ τὰ (The) γὰρ (for) ὅπλα (weapons) τῆς (of the) στρατείας (warfare) ἡμῶν (of us) οὐ (are not) σαρκικὰ (fleshly), ἀλλὰ (but) δυνατὰ (powerful) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (divinely) πρὸς (to) καθαίρεσιν (the demolition) ὀχυρωμάτων (of strongholds),

⁵ καὶ (even) ὄντας (being) ἡμᾶς (we) νεκροὺς (dead) τοῖς (-) παραπτώμασιν (in trespasses), συνεζωοποίησεν (made us alive with) τῷ (-) Χριστῷ (Christ) — χάριτί (by grace) ἐστε (you are) σεσῳσμένοι (saved) —

¹⁴ διὸ (Therefore) λέγει (it says): “Ἔγειρε (Awake you), ὁ (the one) καθεύδων (sleeping), καὶ (and) ἀνάστα (rise up) ἐκ (out from) τῶν (the) νεκρῶν (dead), καὶ (and) ἐπιφαύσει (will shine upon) σοι (you) ὁ (-) Χριστός (Christ).”

²⁰ κατὰ (according to) τὴν (the) ἀποκαραδοκίαν (earnest expectation) καὶ (and) ἐλπίδα (hope) μου (of me) ὅτι (that) ἐν (in) οὐδενὶ (nothing) αἰσχυνθήσομαι (I will be ashamed), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐν (in) πάσῃ (all) παρρησίᾳ (boldness), ὡς (as) πάντοτε (always) καὶ (also) νῦν (now), μεγαλυνθήσεται (will be magnified) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) σώματί (body) μου (of me), εἴτε (whether) διὰ (by) ζωῆς (life) εἴτε (or) διὰ (by) θανάτου (death).

¹³ Καὶ (And) ὑμᾶς (you) νεκροὺς (dead) ὄντας (being) ‹ἐν› (in) τοῖς (the) παραπτώμασιν (trespasses) καὶ (and) τῇ (in the) ἀκροβυστίᾳ (uncircumcision) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh) ὑμῶν (of you), συνεζωοποίησεν (He made alive together) ὑμᾶς (you) σὺν (with) αὐτῷ (Him), χαρισάμενος (having forgiven) ἡμῖν (us) πάντα (all) τὰ (the) παραπτώματα (transgressions),

¹² ἵνα (in order that) κριθῶσιν (should be judged) πάντες (all) οἱ (those) μὴ (not) πιστεύσαντες (having believed) τῇ (the) ἀληθείᾳ (truth), ἀλλὰ (but) εὐδοκήσαντες (having delighted) τῇ (-) ἀδικίᾳ (in unrighteousness).

⁵ Οὕτως (Thus) καὶ (also) ἡ (the) γλῶσσα (tongue) μικρὸν (a small) μέλος (member) ἐστὶν (is), καὶ (and) μεγάλα (exceeding things) αὐχεῖ (it boasts). ἰδοὺ (Behold) ἡλίκον (a small) πῦρ (fire), ἡλίκην (how great) ὕλην (a forest) ἀνάπτει (it kindles). ⁶ καὶ (Also) ἡ (the) γλῶσσα (tongue is) πῦρ (a fire), ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) τῆς (-) ἀδικίας (of iniquity). ἡ (The) γλῶσσα (tongue) καθίσταται (is set) ἐν (among) τοῖς (the) μέλεσιν (members) ἡμῶν (of us), ἡ (-) σπιλοῦσα (defiling) ὅλον (all) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body), καὶ (and) φλογίζουσα (setting on fire) τὸν (the) τροχὸν (course) τῆς (-) γενέσεως (of nature), καὶ (and itself) φλογιζομένη (being set on fire) ὑπὸ (by) τῆς (-) γεέννης (hell).

¹ Πόθεν (From where) πόλεμοι (come disputes) καὶ (and) πόθεν (from where) μάχαι (quarrels) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you)? οὐκ (Is it not) ἐντεῦθεν (from there), ἐκ (out of) τῶν (the) ἡδονῶν (passions) ὑμῶν (of you) τῶν (-) στρατευομένων (warring) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) μέλεσιν (members) ὑμῶν (of you)? ² εἰς (so as) τὸ (-) μηκέτι (no longer) ἀνθρώπων (to men’s) ἐπιθυμίαις (desires) ἀλλὰ (but) θελήματι (to the will) Θεοῦ (of God), τὸν (the) ἐπίλοιπον (remaining) ἐν (in) σαρκὶ (the flesh) βιῶσαι (to live) χρόνον (time).

¹³ ἀδικούμενοι (suffering wrong) μισθὸν (as the wage) ἀδικίας (of unrighteousness); ἡδονὴν (as pleasure) ἡγούμενοι (esteeming) τὴν (-) ἐν (in) ἡμέρᾳ (daytime) τρυφήν (carousal); σπίλοι (blots) καὶ (and) μῶμοι (blemishes), ἐντρυφῶντες (reveling) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἀπάταις (deceptions) αὐτῶν (of them), συνευωχούμενοι (feasting with) ὑμῖν (you); ¹⁴ ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) ἔχοντες (having) μεστοὺς (full) μοιχαλίδος (of adultery), καὶ (and) ἀκαταπαύστους (unceasing) ἁμαρτίας (from sin), δελεάζοντες (enticing) ψυχὰς (souls) ἀστηρίκτους (unestablished); καρδίαν (a heart) γεγυμνασμένην (having been exercised) πλεονεξίας (in craving) ἔχοντες (having)— κατάρας (of a curse) τέκνα (children)! ¹⁵ Καταλιπόντες (Having left) εὐθεῖαν (the straight) ὁδὸν (way), ἐπλανήθησαν (they have gone astray), ἐξακολουθήσαντες (having followed) τῇ (in the) ὁδῷ (way) τοῦ (-) Βαλαὰμ (of Balaam) τοῦ (-) Βοσὸρ* (son of Bosor), ὃς (who) μισθὸν (the wage) ἀδικίας (of unrighteousness) ἠγάπησεν (loved);

⁹ ἐὰν (If) ὁμολογῶμεν (we should confess) τὰς (the) ἁμαρτίας (sins) ἡμῶν (of us), πιστός (faithful) ἐστιν (He is) καὶ (and) δίκαιος (just), ἵνα (that) ἀφῇ (He may forgive) ἡμῖν (us) τὰς (our) ἁμαρτίας (sins), καὶ (and) καθαρίσῃ (might cleanse) ἡμᾶς (us) ἀπὸ (from) πάσης (all) ἀδικίας (unrighteousness).

²¹ τέξεται (She will bear) δὲ (then) υἱὸν (a son), καὶ (and) καλέσεις (you will call) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) αὐτοῦ (of Him) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus); αὐτὸς (He) γὰρ (for) σώσει (will save) τὸν (the) λαὸν (people) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) ἁμαρτιῶν (sins) αὐτῶν (of them).”

¹⁷ ὅτι (For) ὁ (the) νόμος (law) διὰ (through) Μωϋσέως (Moses) ἐδόθη (was given); ἡ (-) χάρις (grace) καὶ (and) ἡ (-) ἀλήθεια (truth) διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) ἐγένετο (came).

³⁶ ἐὰν (If) οὖν (therefore) ὁ (the) Υἱὸς (Son) ὑμᾶς (you) ἐλευθερώσῃ (shall set free), ὄντως (indeed) ἐλεύθεροι (free) ἔσεσθε (you will be).

¹⁹ Οἴδαμεν (We know) δὲ (now) ὅτι (that) ὅσα (whatever) ὁ (the) νόμος (law) λέγει (says), τοῖς (to those) ἐν (under) τῷ (the) νόμῳ (law) λαλεῖ (it speaks), ἵνα (so that) πᾶν (every) στόμα (mouth) φραγῇ (may be stopped), καὶ (and) ὑπόδικος (under judgment) γένηται (may be) πᾶς (all) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God). ²⁰ διότι (Therefore) ἐξ (by) ἔργων (works) νόμου (of the Law) οὐ (not) δικαιωθήσεται (will be justified) πᾶσα (any) σὰρξ (flesh) ἐνώπιον (before) αὐτοῦ (Him); διὰ (through) γὰρ (for) νόμου (the Law) ἐπίγνωσις (is knowledge) ἁμαρτίας (of sin).

¹⁶ Διὰ (Therefore) τοῦτο (it is) ἐκ (of) πίστεως (faith), ἵνα (that it may be) κατὰ (according to) χάριν (grace), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) εἶναι (to be) βεβαίαν (sure) τὴν (the) ἐπαγγελίαν (promise) παντὶ (to all) τῷ (the) σπέρματι (seed), οὐ (not) τῷ (to that) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law) μόνον (only), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) τῷ (to that) ἐκ (of the) πίστεως (faith) Ἀβραάμ (of Abraham), ὅς (who) ἐστιν (is) πατὴρ (the father) πάντων (of all) ἡμῶν (of us) —

⁴ Ὥστε (Likewise), ἀδελφοί (brothers) μου (of me), καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) ἐθανατώθητε (have been put to death) τῷ (to the) νόμῳ (law) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) σώματος (body) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) γενέσθαι (to belong) ὑμᾶς (you) ἑτέρῳ (to another), τῷ (to the One) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead) ἐγερθέντι (having been raised), ἵνα (so that) καρποφορήσωμεν (we should bear fruit) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God). ⁵ ὅτε (While) γὰρ (for) ἦμεν (we were) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σαρκί (flesh), τὰ (the) παθήματα (passions) τῶν (-) ἁμαρτιῶν (of sins) τὰ (that were) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law) ἐνηργεῖτο (were at work) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) μέλεσιν (members) ἡμῶν (of us), εἰς (to) τὸ (the) καρποφορῆσαι (bringing forth of fruit) τῷ (-) θανάτῳ (to death). ⁶ νυνὶ (Now) δὲ (however) κατηργήθημεν (we have been released) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law), ἀποθανόντες (having died) ἐν (to) ᾧ (that which) κατειχόμεθα (we were bound), ὥστε (in order for) δουλεύειν (to serve) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐν (in) καινότητι (newness) πνεύματος (of the Spirit), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) παλαιότητι (in oldness) γράμματος (of the letter). ⁷ Τί (What) οὖν (then) ἐροῦμεν (shall we say)? ὁ (Is the) νόμος (law) ἁμαρτία (sin)? μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)! ἀλλὰ (But) τὴν (-) ἁμαρτίαν (sin) οὐκ (not) ἔγνων (I have known), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) διὰ (by) νόμου (law); τήν (-) τε (then) γὰρ (for) ἐπιθυμίαν (covetousness), οὐκ (not) ᾔδειν (I had been conscious of), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὁ (the) νόμος (law) ἔλεγεν (had said), “Οὐκ (Not) ἐπιθυμήσεις (you shall covet).” ⁸ ἀφορμὴν (An occasion) δὲ (however) λαβοῦσα (having taken) ἡ (-) ἁμαρτία (sin) διὰ (by) τῆς (the) ἐντολῆς (commandment), κατειργάσατο (it produced) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (me) πᾶσαν (all) ἐπιθυμίαν (covetousness); χωρὶς (apart from) γὰρ (for) νόμου (the Law), ἁμαρτία (sin) νεκρά (is dead). ⁹ Ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) ἔζων (was alive) χωρὶς (apart from) νόμου (law) ποτέ (once); ἐλθούσης (having come) δὲ (however) τῆς (the) ἐντολῆς (commandment), ἡ (the) ἁμαρτία (sin) ἀνέζησεν (revived); ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (then) ἀπέθανον (died). ¹⁰ καὶ (And) εὑρέθη (proved to be) μοι (me) ἡ (the) ἐντολὴ (commandment) ἡ (that was) εἰς (to) ζωὴν (life), αὕτη (this) εἰς (to) θάνατον (death). ¹¹ ἡ (The) γὰρ (for) ἁμαρτία (sin), ἀφορμὴν (an occasion) λαβοῦσα (having taken) διὰ (by) τῆς (the) ἐντολῆς (commandment), ἐξηπάτησέν (deceived) με (me), καὶ (and) δι’ (by) αὐτῆς (it) ἀπέκτεινεν (put me to death).

² ὁ (-) γὰρ (For) νόμος (the law) τοῦ (of the) Πνεύματος (Spirit) τῆς (of) ζωῆς (life) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) ἠλευθέρωσέν (has set free) σε (you) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law) τῆς (-) ἁμαρτίας (of sin) καὶ (and) τοῦ (-) θανάτου (of death).

¹² Ἄρα (So) οὖν (then), ἀδελφοί (brothers), ὀφειλέται (debtors) ἐσμέν (we are), οὐ (not) τῇ (to the) σαρκὶ (flesh), τοῦ (-) κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (flesh) ζῆν (to live).

⁶ εἰ (If) δὲ (now) χάριτι (by grace), οὐκέτι (no longer) ἐξ (from) ἔργων (works); ἐπεὶ (otherwise) ἡ (-) χάρις (grace) οὐκέτι (no longer) γίνεται (would be) χάρις (grace).

⁶ ὃς (who) καὶ (also) ἱκάνωσεν (has made competent) ἡμᾶς (us as) διακόνους (ministers) καινῆς (of a new) διαθήκης (covenant), οὐ (not) γράμματος (of the letter) ἀλλὰ (but) πνεύματος (of the Spirit); τὸ (the) γὰρ (for) γράμμα (letter) ἀποκτέννει* (kills), τὸ (-) δὲ (but) πνεῦμα (the Spirit) ζωοποιεῖ (gives life). ⁷ Εἰ (If) δὲ (now) ἡ (the) διακονία (ministry) τοῦ (-) θανάτου (of death), ἐν (in) γράμμασιν (letters) ἐντετυπωμένη (having been engraved) λίθοις (on stones), ἐγενήθη (was produced) ἐν (in) δόξῃ (glory), ὥστε (so as for) μὴ (not) δύνασθαι (to be able) ἀτενίσαι (to look intently) τοὺς (the) υἱοὺς (sons) Ἰσραὴλ (of Israel) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πρόσωπον (face) Μωϋσέως (of Moses), διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) τοῦ (of the) προσώπου (face) αὐτοῦ (of him), τὴν (which) καταργουμένην (is fading), ⁸ πῶς (how) οὐχὶ (not) μᾶλλον (more), ἡ (the) διακονία (ministry) τοῦ (of the) πνεύματος (Spirit) ἔσται (will be) ἐν (in) δόξῃ (glory)? ⁹ εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) τῇ* (in the) διακονία (ministry) τῆς (-) κατακρίσεως (of condemnation was) δόξα (glory), πολλῷ (much) μᾶλλον (more) περισσεύει (abounds) ἡ (the) διακονία (ministry) τῆς (-) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness) δόξῃ (in glory)!

²³ Πρὸ (Before) τοῦ (-) δὲ (now) ἐλθεῖν (came) τὴν (-) πίστιν (faith), ὑπὸ (under) νόμον (the Law) ἐφρουρούμεθα (we were held in custody), συνκλειόμενοι (having been locked up) εἰς (until) τὴν (the) μέλλουσαν (being about) πίστιν (faith) ἀποκαλυφθῆναι (to be revealed),

⁴ Ὅτε (When) δὲ (however) ἦλθεν (had come) τὸ (the) πλήρωμα (fullness) τοῦ (of the) χρόνου (time), ἐξαπέστειλεν (sent forth) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) αὐτοῦ (of him), γενόμενον (having been born) ἐκ (of) γυναικός (a woman), γενόμενον (having been born) ὑπὸ (under) νόμον (the Law), ⁵ ἵνα (that) τοὺς (those) ὑπὸ (under) νόμον (the Law) ἐξαγοράσῃ (He might redeem), ἵνα (so that) τὴν (the) υἱοθεσίαν (divine adoption as sons) ἀπολάβωμεν (we might receive).

²¹ Λέγετέ (Tell) μοι (me), οἱ (those) ὑπὸ (under) νόμον (the Law) θέλοντες (wishing) εἶναι (to be), τὸν (the) νόμον (Law) οὐκ (not) ἀκούετε (you do listen to)?

¹⁸ εἰ (If) δὲ (however) Πνεύματι (the Spirit) ἄγεσθε (you are led by), οὐκ (not) ἐστὲ (you are) ὑπὸ (under) νόμον (the Law).

¹⁴ ὃς (who) ἔδωκεν (gave) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us), ἵνα (that) λυτρώσηται (He might redeem) ἡμᾶς (us) ἀπὸ (from) πάσης (all) ἀνομίας (lawlessness), καὶ (and) καθαρίσῃ (might purify) ἑαυτῷ (to Himself) λαὸν (a people) περιούσιον (specially chosen), ζηλωτὴν (zealous) καλῶν (of good) ἔργων (works).

¹⁰ ὅτι (For) αὕτη (this is) ἡ (the) διαθήκη (covenant) ἣν (that) διαθήσομαι (I will make) τῷ (with the) οἴκῳ (house) Ἰσραὴλ (of Israel), μετὰ (after) τὰς (the) ἡμέρας (days) ἐκείνας (those), λέγει (says) Κύριος (the Lord), διδοὺς (putting) νόμους (Laws) μου (of Me) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) διάνοιαν (mind) αὐτῶν (of them), καὶ (and) ἐπὶ (upon) καρδίας (hearts) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐπιγράψω (I will inscribe) αὐτούς (them); καὶ (and) ἔσομαι (I will be) αὐτοῖς (to them) εἰς (for) Θεόν (God), καὶ (and) αὐτοὶ (they) ἔσονταί (will be) μοι (to Me) εἰς (for) λαόν (a people).

⁹ Τί (What) οὖν (then)? προεχόμεθα (Are we better)? οὐ (Not) πάντως (at all). προῃτιασάμεθα (We have already charged) γὰρ (for) Ἰουδαίους (Jews) τε (both) καὶ (and) Ἕλληνας (Greeks) πάντας (all) ὑφ’ (under) ἁμαρτίαν (sin) εἶναι (to be).

¹ Τί (What) οὖν (then) ἐροῦμεν (will we say)? ἐπιμένωμεν (Shall we continue) τῇ (-) ἁμαρτίᾳ (in sin), ἵνα (that) ἡ (-) χάρις (grace) πλεονάσῃ (may abound)? ² μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)! οἵτινες (Who) ἀπεθάνομεν (we died) τῇ (-) ἁμαρτίᾳ (to sin), πῶς (how) ἔτι (still) ζήσομεν (shall we live) ἐν (in) αὐτῇ (it)?

¹ Ταύτας (These) οὖν (therefore) ἔχοντες (having) τὰς (-) ἐπαγγελίας (promises), ἀγαπητοί (beloved), καθαρίσωμεν (we should cleanse) ἑαυτοὺς (ourselves) ἀπὸ (from) παντὸς (every) μολυσμοῦ (defilement) σαρκὸς (of flesh) καὶ (and) πνεύματος (spirit), ἐπιτελοῦντες (perfecting) ἁγιωσύνην (holiness) ἐν (in) φόβῳ (the fear) Θεοῦ (of God).

¹⁷ Εἰ (If) δὲ (however) ζητοῦντες (seeking) δικαιωθῆναι (to be justified) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ), εὑρέθημεν (have been found) καὶ (also) αὐτοὶ (we ourselves) ἁμαρτωλοί (sinners), ἆρα (is then) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἁμαρτίας (of sin) διάκονος (a minister)? μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)! ¹⁸ εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) ἃ (that) κατέλυσα (I had torn down), ταῦτα (these things) πάλιν (again) οἰκοδομῶ (I build), παραβάτην (a transgressor) ἐμαυτὸν (myself) συνιστάνω (I prove).

⁸ Τῇ (-) γὰρ (For) χάριτί (by grace) ἐστε (you are) σεσῳσμένοι (saved) διὰ (through) πίστεως (faith), καὶ (and) τοῦτο (this) οὐκ (not) ἐξ (of) ὑμῶν (yourselves); Θεοῦ (it is of God) τὸ (the) δῶρον (gift), ⁹ οὐκ (not) ἐξ (as a result of) ἔργων (works), ἵνα (so that) μή (not) τις (anyone) καυχήσηται (may boast). ¹⁰ αὐτοῦ (Of Him) γάρ (for) ἐσμεν (we are) ποίημα (workmanship), κτισθέντες (having been created) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) ἐπὶ (for) ἔργοις (works) ἀγαθοῖς (good), οἷς (which) προητοίμασεν (prepared beforehand) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God), ἵνα (that) ἐν (in) αὐτοῖς (them) περιπατήσωμεν (we should walk). ¹¹ Ἐπεφάνη (Has appeared) γὰρ (for) ἡ (the) χάρις (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), σωτήριος (bringing salvation) πᾶσιν (to all) ἀνθρώποις (men), ¹² παιδεύουσα (instructing) ἡμᾶς (us) ἵνα (that), ἀρνησάμενοι (having denied) τὴν (-) ἀσέβειαν (ungodliness) καὶ (and) τὰς (-) κοσμικὰς (worldly) ἐπιθυμίας (passions), σωφρόνως (discreetly) καὶ (and) δικαίως (righteously) καὶ (and) εὐσεβῶς (piously) ζήσωμεν (we should live) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) νῦν (present) αἰῶνι (age), ¹³ προσδεχόμενοι (awaiting) τὴν (the) μακαρίαν (blessed) ἐλπίδα (hope) καὶ (and) ἐπιφάνειαν (the appearing) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) τοῦ (of the) μεγάλου (great) Θεοῦ (God) καὶ (and) Σωτῆρος (Savior) ἡμῶν (of us), Χριστοῦ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), ¹⁴ ὃς (who) ἔδωκεν (gave) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us), ἵνα (that) λυτρώσηται (He might redeem) ἡμᾶς (us) ἀπὸ (from) πάσης (all) ἀνομίας (lawlessness), καὶ (and) καθαρίσῃ (might purify) ἑαυτῷ (to Himself) λαὸν (a people) περιούσιον (specially chosen), ζηλωτὴν (zealous) καλῶν (of good) ἔργων (works).

²⁴ Οὐδεὶς (No one) δύναται (is able) δυσὶ (two) κυρίοις (masters) δουλεύειν (to serve); ἢ (either) γὰρ (for) τὸν (the) ἕνα (one) μισήσει (he will hate), καὶ (and) τὸν (the) ἕτερον (other) ἀγαπήσει (he will love); ἢ (or) ἑνὸς (the one) ἀνθέξεται (he will be devoted to), καὶ (and) τοῦ (the) ἑτέρου (other) καταφρονήσει (he will despise). οὐ (Not) δύνασθε (you are able) Θεῷ (God) δουλεύειν (to serve), καὶ (and) μαμωνᾷ (money).

³⁴ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) αὐτοῖς (them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ποιῶν (practicing) τὴν (the) ἁμαρτίαν (sin), δοῦλός (a slave) ἐστιν (is) τῆς (of the) ἁμαρτίας (sin).

¹⁷ χάρις (Thanks be) δὲ (however) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God) ὅτι (that) ἦτε (you used to be) δοῦλοι (slaves) τῆς (-) ἁμαρτίας (of sin), ὑπηκούσατε (you have become obedient) δὲ (now) ἐκ (from the) καρδίας (heart), εἰς (to) ὃν (which) παρεδόθητε (you were handed over) τύπον (to the form) διδαχῆς (of teaching).

¹⁹ ἐλευθερίαν (freedom) αὐτοῖς (them) ἐπαγγελλόμενοι (promising), αὐτοὶ (themselves) δοῦλοι (slaves) ὑπάρχοντες (being) τῆς (-) φθορᾶς (of corruption). ᾧ (By what) γάρ (for) τις (anyone) ἥττηται (has been subdued), τούτῳ (by that) ‹καὶ› (also) δεδούλωται (he is enslaved).

²⁵ Ἐν (At) ἐκείνῳ (that) τῷ (-) καιρῷ (time) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) εἶπεν (said), “Ἐξομολογοῦμαί (I fully consent) σοι (to You), Πάτερ (Father), Κύριε (Lord) τοῦ (of the) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) καὶ (and) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth), ὅτι (that) ἔκρυψας (You did hide) ταῦτα (these things) ἀπὸ (from) σοφῶν (wise) καὶ (and) συνετῶν (learned), καὶ (and) ἀπεκάλυψας (did reveal) αὐτὰ (them) νηπίοις (to little children). ²⁶ ναί (Yes), ὁ (-) Πατήρ (Father), ὅτι (for) οὕτως (thus) εὐδοκία (well-pleasing) ἐγένετο (it was) ἔμπροσθέν (before) σου (You).

³ Ἦμεν (Were) γάρ (for) ποτε (once) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we ourselves) ἀνόητοι (foolish), ἀπειθεῖς (disobedient), πλανώμενοι (being deceived), δουλεύοντες (serving) ἐπιθυμίαις (lusts) καὶ (and) ἡδοναῖς (pleasures) ποικίλαις (various), ἐν (in) κακίᾳ (malice) καὶ (and) φθόνῳ (envy) διάγοντες (living), στυγητοί (hateful), μισοῦντες (hating) ἀλλήλους (one another). ⁴ Ὅτε (When) δὲ (however) ἡ (the) χρηστότης (kindness) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) φιλανθρωπία (love of mankind) ἐπεφάνη (appeared), τοῦ (of the) Σωτῆρος (Savior) ἡμῶν (of us), Θεοῦ (God), ⁵ οὐκ (not) ἐξ (by) ἔργων (works) τῶν (-) ἐν (in) δικαιοσύνῃ (righteousness) ἃ (that) ἐποιήσαμεν (did) ἡμεῖς (we), ἀλλὰ (but) κατὰ (according to) τὸ (-) αὐτοῦ (His) ἔλεος (mercy), ἔσωσεν (He saved) ἡμᾶς (us) διὰ (through) λουτροῦ (the washing) παλινγενεσίας (of regeneration) καὶ (and) ἀνακαινώσεως (renewing) Πνεύματος (of the Spirit) Ἁγίου (Holy), ⁶ οὗ (whom) ἐξέχεεν (He poured out) ἐφ’ (on) ἡμᾶς (us) πλουσίως (richly) διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), τοῦ (the) Σωτῆρος (Savior) ἡμῶν (of us), ⁷ ἵνα (so that), δικαιωθέντες (having been justified) τῇ (-) ἐκείνου (by that) χάριτι (grace), κληρονόμοι (heirs) γενηθῶμεν (we should become) κατ’ (according to) ἐλπίδα (the hope) ζωῆς (of life) αἰωνίου (eternal).

² εἰς (so as) τὸ (-) μηκέτι (no longer) ἀνθρώπων (to men’s) ἐπιθυμίαις (desires) ἀλλὰ (but) θελήματι (to the will) Θεοῦ (of God), τὸν (the) ἐπίλοιπον (remaining) ἐν (in) σαρκὶ (the flesh) βιῶσαι (to live) χρόνον (time). ³ ἀρκετὸς (Is sufficient) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the) παρεληλυθὼς (past) χρόνος (time) τὸ (the) βούλημα (desire) τῶν (of the) ἐθνῶν (Gentiles) κατειργάσθαι (to have carried out), πεπορευμένους (having walked) ἐν (in) ἀσελγείαις (sensuality), ἐπιθυμίαις (lusts), οἰνοφλυγίαις (drunkenness), κώμοις (orgies), πότοις (carousing), καὶ (and) ἀθεμίτοις (abominable) εἰδωλολατρίαις (idolatries). ⁴ Ἐν (With respect to) ᾧ (this) ξενίζονται (they think it strange), μὴ (not) συντρεχόντων (running with them) ὑμῶν (of you) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) αὐτὴν (same) τῆς (-) ἀσωτίας (of debauchery) ἀνάχυσιν (overflow), βλασφημοῦντες (speaking evil of you), ⁵ οἳ (who) ἀποδώσουσιν (will give) λόγον (account) τῷ (to Him who) ἑτοίμως (ready) ἔχοντι (is) κρῖναι (to judge) ζῶντας (the living) καὶ (and) νεκρούς (the dead).

¹⁷ ὅτι (For it is) ὁ (the) καιρὸς (time for) τοῦ (-) ἄρξασθαι (to have begun) τὸ (the) κρίμα (judgment) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) οἴκου (house) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God); εἰ (if) δὲ (now) πρῶτον (first) ἀφ’ (from) ἡμῶν (us), τί (what will be) τὸ (the) τέλος (outcome) τῶν (of those) ἀπειθούντων (disobeying) τῷ (the) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) εὐαγγελίῳ (gospel)?

⁴ Ἐχάρην (I rejoiced) λίαν (exceedingly) ὅτι (that) εὕρηκα (I have found) ἐκ (some of) τῶν (the) τέκνων (children) σου (of you) περιπατοῦντας (walking) ἐν (in) ἀληθείᾳ (truth), καθὼς (just as) ἐντολὴν (commandment) ἐλάβομεν (we received) παρὰ (from) τοῦ (the) Πατρός (Father).

³ ἐχάρην (I rejoiced) γὰρ (for) λίαν (exceedingly) ἐρχομένων (coming) ἀδελφῶν (of the brothers) καὶ (and) μαρτυρούντων (bearing witness) σου (of your) τῇ (-) ἀληθείᾳ (truth), καθὼς (just as) σὺ (you) ἐν (in) ἀληθείᾳ (truth) περιπατεῖς (are walking).

⁷⁴ ἀφόβως (without fear), ἐκ (from) χειρὸς (the hand) ἐχθρῶν (of our enemies) ῥυσθέντας (having been saved), λατρεύειν (to serve) αὐτῷ (Him), ⁷⁵ ἐν (in) ὁσιότητι (holiness) καὶ (and) δικαιοσύνῃ (righteousness) ἐνώπιον (before) αὐτοῦ (Him), πάσαις (all) ταῖς (the) ἡμέραις (days) ἡμῶν (of our life).

³² καὶ (And) γνώσεσθε (you will know) τὴν (the) ἀλήθειαν (truth), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἀλήθεια (truth) ἐλευθερώσει (will set free) ὑμᾶς (you).”

¹⁹ Ἀνθρώπινον (In human terms) λέγω (I speak) διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) ἀσθένειαν (weakness) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh) ὑμῶν (of you). ὥσπερ (For as) γὰρ (for) παρεστήσατε (you yielded) τὰ (the) μέλη (members) ὑμῶν (of you) δοῦλα (in bondage) τῇ (-) ἀκαθαρσίᾳ (to impurity) καὶ (and) τῇ (to) ἀνομίᾳ (lawlessness) εἰς (unto) τὴν (-) ἀνομίαν (lawlessness), οὕτως (so) νῦν (now) παραστήσατε (yield) τὰ (the) μέλη (members) ὑμῶν (of you) δοῦλα (in bondage) τῇ (-) δικαιοσύνῃ (to righteousness) εἰς (unto) ἁγιασμόν (sanctification). ²⁰ Ὅτε (When) γὰρ (for) δοῦλοι (slaves) ἦτε (you were) τῆς (-) ἁμαρτίας (of sin), ἐλεύθεροι (free) ἦτε (you were) τῇ (-) δικαιοσύνῃ (from righteousness).

²¹ δοῦλος (Slave being) ἐκλήθης (were you called), μή (not) σοι (to you) μελέτω (let it be a care); ἀλλ’ (but) εἰ (if) καὶ (also) δύνασαι (you are able) ἐλεύθερος (free) γενέσθαι (to become), μᾶλλον (rather) χρῆσαι (take advantage). ²² ὁ (The one) γὰρ (for) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord) κληθεὶς (having been called) δοῦλος (being a slave), ἀπελεύθερος (a freedman) Κυρίου (of the Lord) ἐστίν (is); ὁμοίως (likewise) ὁ (the one) ἐλεύθερος (free) κληθεὶς (having been called), δοῦλός (a slave) ἐστιν (is) Χριστοῦ (of Christ).

¹ Τῇ (In) ἐλευθερίᾳ (freedom), ἡμᾶς (us) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἠλευθέρωσεν (has set free); στήκετε (stand firm), οὖν (therefore), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) πάλιν (again) ζυγῷ (in a yoke) δουλείας (of slavery) ἐνέχεσθε (entangle yourselves).

⁵ Εἰ (If) δὲ (however) ἡ (the) ἀδικία (unrighteousness) ἡμῶν (of us), Θεοῦ (God’s) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness) συνίστησιν (shows), τί (what) ἐροῦμεν (shall we say)? μὴ (Is) ἄδικος (unrighteous) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God), ὁ (-) ἐπιφέρων (inflicting) τὴν (the) ὀργήν (wrath)? κατὰ (According to) ἄνθρωπον (man) λέγω (I speak).

¹⁶ οὐκ (Not) οἴδατε (know you) ὅτι (that) ᾧ (to whom) παριστάνετε (you yield) ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves) δούλους (as slaves) εἰς (for) ὑπακοήν (obedience), δοῦλοί (slaves) ἐστε (you are) ᾧ (to him whom) ὑπακούετε (you obey), ἤτοι (whether) ἁμαρτίας (of sin) εἰς (to) θάνατον (death), ἢ (or) ὑπακοῆς (of obedience) εἰς (to) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness)? ¹⁷ χάρις (Thanks be) δὲ (however) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God) ὅτι (that) ἦτε (you used to be) δοῦλοι (slaves) τῆς (-) ἁμαρτίας (of sin), ὑπηκούσατε (you have become obedient) δὲ (now) ἐκ (from the) καρδίας (heart), εἰς (to) ὃν (which) παρεδόθητε (you were handed over) τύπον (to the form) διδαχῆς (of teaching).

²⁶ Ὡσαύτως (Likewise) δὲ (now) καὶ (also), τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) συναντιλαμβάνεται (joins to help) τῇ (the) ἀσθενείᾳ (weakness) ἡμῶν (of us); τὸ (the) γὰρ (for) τί (things which) προσευξώμεθα (we should pray for) καθὸ (as) δεῖ (it behooves), οὐκ (not) οἴδαμεν (we know), ἀλλὰ (but) αὐτὸ (Himself) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) ὑπερεντυγχάνει (makes intercession), στεναγμοῖς (with groanings) ἀλαλήτοις (inexpressible).

¹ Ὀφείλομεν (We ought) δὲ (now), ἡμεῖς (we) οἱ (who are) δυνατοὶ (strong), τὰ (the) ἀσθενήματα (weaknesses) τῶν (of the) ἀδυνάτων (weak) βαστάζειν (to bear), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ἑαυτοῖς (ourselves) ἀρέσκειν (to please).

⁸ Μὴ (Not) κατὰ (according to) ἄνθρωπον (man), ταῦτα (these things) λαλῶ (do I speak)? ἢ (Or) καὶ (also) ὁ (the) νόμος (law) ταῦτα (these things) οὐ (not) λέγει (says)?

³² εἰ (If) κατὰ (according to) ἄνθρωπον (man), ἐθηριομάχησα (I fought wild beasts) ἐν (in) Ἐφέσῳ (Ephesus), τί (what) μοι (to me) τὸ (the) ὄφελος (profit)? εἰ (If) νεκροὶ (the dead) οὐκ (not) ἐγείρονται (are raised), “Φάγωμεν (Let us eat) καὶ (and) πίωμεν (let us drink), αὔριον (tomorrow) γὰρ (for) ἀποθνήσκομεν (we die).” ³³ Μὴ (Not) πλανᾶσθε (be misled): “Φθείρουσιν (Do corrupt) ἤθη (morals) χρηστὰ (good), ὁμιλίαι (companionships) κακαί (bad).”

¹⁷ Εἰς (To) ἑαυτὸν (himself) δὲ (however) ἐλθὼν (having come), ἔφη (he was saying), ‘Πόσοι (How many) μίσθιοι (hired servants) τοῦ (of the) πατρός (father) μου (of me) περισσεύονται (have abundance) ἄρτων (of bread), ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) λιμῷ (with hunger) ὧδε (here) ἀπόλλυμαι (am perishing)? ¹⁸ ἀναστὰς (Having risen up), πορεύσομαι (I will go) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the) πατέρα (father) μου (of me), καὶ (and) ἐρῶ (I will say) αὐτῷ (to him), “Πάτερ (Father), ἥμαρτον (I have sinned) εἰς (against) τὸν (-) οὐρανὸν (heaven) καὶ (and) ἐνώπιόν (before) σου (you); ¹⁹ οὐκέτι (no longer) εἰμὶ (am I) ἄξιος (worthy) κληθῆναι (to be called) υἱός (son) σου (of you). ποίησόν (Make) με (me) ὡς (like) ἕνα (one) τῶν (of the) μισθίων (servants) σου (of you).”’ ²⁰ Καὶ (And) ἀναστὰς (having risen up), ἦλθεν (he went) πρὸς (to) τὸν (the) πατέρα (father) ἑαυτοῦ (of himself). ἔτι (Still) δὲ (now) αὐτοῦ (he) μακρὰν (far) ἀπέχοντος (being distant), εἶδεν (saw) αὐτὸν (him) ὁ (the) πατὴρ (father) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) ἐσπλαγχνίσθη (was moved with compassion), καὶ (and) δραμὼν (having run), ἐπέπεσεν (fell) ἐπὶ (upon) τὸν (the) τράχηλον (neck) αὐτοῦ (of him) καὶ (and) κατεφίλησεν (kissed) αὐτόν (him). ²¹ Εἶπεν (Said) δὲ (then) ὁ (the) υἱὸς (son) αὐτῷ (to him), ‘Πάτερ (Father), ἥμαρτον (I have sinned) εἰς (against) τὸν (-) οὐρανὸν (heaven) καὶ (and) ἐνώπιόν (before) σου (you); οὐκέτι (no longer) εἰμὶ (am I) ἄξιος (worthy) κληθῆναι (to be called) υἱός (son) σου (of you).’

³² οἵτινες (who) τὸ (the) δικαίωμα (righteous decree) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) ἐπιγνόντες (having known), ὅτι (that) οἱ (those) τὰ (such) τοιαῦτα (things) πράσσοντες (doing), ἄξιοι (worthy) θανάτου (of death) εἰσίν (are), οὐ (not) μόνον (only) αὐτὰ (them) ποιοῦσιν (are practicing), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) συνευδοκοῦσιν (are approving of) τοῖς (those) πράσσουσιν (practicing them).

⁶ τὸ (The) γὰρ (for) φρόνημα (mind) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh) θάνατος (is death); τὸ (the) δὲ (but) φρόνημα (mind) τοῦ (of the) πνεύματος (Spirit), ζωὴ (life) καὶ (and) εἰρήνη (peace),

¹¹ Ἰδοὺ (Behold) γὰρ (for), αὐτὸ (this very) τοῦτο (same) τὸ (thing), κατὰ (according to) Θεὸν (God) λυπηθῆναι (to have been grieved), πόσην (how much) κατειργάσατο (has produced) ὑμῖν (in you) σπουδήν (earnestness), ἀλλὰ (but instead) ἀπολογίαν (reasoned defense), ἀλλὰ (but) ἀγανάκτησιν (indignation), ἀλλὰ (but) φόβον (fear), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐπιπόθησιν (longing), ἀλλὰ (but) ζῆλον (zeal), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐκδίκησιν (vindication)! ἐν (In) παντὶ (everything), συνεστήσατε (you have proved) ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves) ἁγνοὺς (innocent) εἶναι (to be) τῷ (in this) πράγματι (matter).

⁷ Μὴ (Not) πλανᾶσθε (be misled); Θεὸς (God) οὐ (not) μυκτηρίζεται (is mocked). ὃ (Whatever) γὰρ (for) ἐὰν (if) σπείρῃ (might sow) ἄνθρωπος (a man), τοῦτο (that) καὶ (also) θερίσει (he will reap). ⁸ ὅτι (For) ὁ (the one) σπείρων (sowing) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) σάρκα (flesh) ἑαυτοῦ (of himself), ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) σαρκὸς (flesh) θερίσει (will reap) φθοράν (decay). ὁ (The one) δὲ (however) σπείρων (sowing) εἰς (to) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit), ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) Πνεύματος (Spirit) θερίσει (will reap) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal).

¹⁹ ὧν (whose) τὸ (-) τέλος (end is) ἀπώλεια (destruction), ὧν (whose) ὁ (-) θεὸς (God is) ἡ (the) κοιλία (belly), καὶ (and) ἡ (-) δόξα (glory) ἐν (is in) τῇ (the) αἰσχύνῃ (shame) αὐτῶν (of them), οἱ (those) τὰ (things) ἐπίγεια (earthly) φρονοῦντες (minding).

⁸ ἐκφέρουσα (That bringing forth) δὲ (however) ἀκάνθας (thorns) καὶ (and) τριβόλους (thistles) ἀδόκιμος (is worthless) καὶ (and) κατάρας (a curse) ἐγγύς (near to), ἧς (of which) τὸ (the) τέλος (end is) εἰς (unto) καῦσιν (burning).

²⁹ πόσῳ (How much) δοκεῖτε (think you) χείρονος (worse) ἀξιωθήσεται (will he deserve) τιμωρίας (punishment), ὁ (the one) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) καταπατήσας (having trampled upon), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) αἷμα (blood) τῆς (of the) διαθήκης (covenant) κοινὸν (ordinary) ἡγησάμενος (having esteemed), ἐν (by) ᾧ (which) ἡγιάσθη (he was sanctified), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) τῆς (-) χάριτος (of grace) ἐνυβρίσας (having insulted)?

¹⁵ εἶτα (Then) ἡ (-) ἐπιθυμία (desire), συλλαβοῦσα (having conceived), τίκτει (gives birth to) ἁμαρτίαν (sin); ἡ (-) δὲ (and) ἁμαρτία (sin) ἀποτελεσθεῖσα (having become fully grown), ἀποκύει (brings forth) θάνατον (death).

²⁰ γινωσκέτω* (let him know) ὅτι (that) ὁ (the one) ἐπιστρέψας (having brought back) ἁμαρτωλὸν (a sinner) ἐκ (from) πλάνης (the error) ὁδοῦ (of the way) αὐτοῦ (of him) σώσει (will save) ψυχὴν (the soul) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἐκ (from) θανάτου (death) καὶ (and) καλύψει (will cover over) πλῆθος (a multitude) ἁμαρτιῶν (of sins).

²⁸ Καὶ (And) νῦν (now), τεκνία (little children), μένετε (abide) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (Him), ἵνα (so that) ἐὰν (when) φανερωθῇ (He appears) σχῶμεν (we might have) παρρησίαν (boldness) καὶ (and) μὴ (not) αἰσχυνθῶμεν (be ashamed) ἀπ’ (before) αὐτοῦ (Him) ἐν (at) τῇ (the) παρουσίᾳ (coming) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

⁶ ὅτι (because) αἷμα (the blood) ἁγίων (of saints) καὶ (and) προφητῶν (of prophets) ἐξέχεαν (they have poured out), καὶ (and) αἷμα (blood) αὐτοῖς (to them) δέδωκας (You have given) πιεῖν* (to drink); ἄξιοί (worthy) εἰσιν (they are).”

¹⁴ Καὶ (And) ὁ (-) θάνατος (Death) καὶ (and) ὁ (-) ᾅδης (Hades) ἐβλήθησαν (were cast) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) λίμνην (lake) τοῦ (-) πυρός (of fire). οὗτος (This) ὁ (the) θάνατος (death) ὁ (-) δεύτερός (second) ἐστιν (is) ἡ (the) λίμνη (lake) τοῦ (of) πυρός (fire).

⁴⁰ Ὥσπερ (As) οὖν (therefore) συλλέγεται (is gathered) τὰ (the) ζιζάνια (weeds), καὶ (and) πυρὶ (in fire) κατακαίεται (is consumed), οὕτως (thus) ἔσται (it will be) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) συντελείᾳ (consummation) τοῦ (of the) αἰῶνος (age).

⁴³ τότε (Then) οἱ (the) δίκαιοι (righteous) ἐκλάμψουσιν (will shine forth) ὡς (as) ὁ (the) ἥλιος (sun) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) βασιλείᾳ (kingdom) τοῦ (of the) Πατρὸς (Father) αὐτῶν (of them). Ὁ (The one) ἔχων (having) ὦτα (ears), ἀκουέτω (let him hear)!

²⁹ καὶ (And) πᾶς (everyone) ὅστις (who) ἀφῆκεν (has left) οἰκίας (houses), ἢ (or) ἀδελφοὺς (brothers), ἢ (or) ἀδελφὰς (sisters), ἢ (or) πατέρα (father), ἢ (or) μητέρα (mother), ‹ἢ (or) γυναῖκα› (wife), ἢ (or) τέκνα (children), ἢ (or) ἀγροὺς (lands), ἕνεκεν (for the sake of) τοῦ (-) μου* (My) ὀνόματός (name), ἑκατονταπλασίονα* (a hundredfold) λήμψεται (will receive), καὶ (and) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal) κληρονομήσει (will inherit).

⁴⁶ Καὶ (And) ἀπελεύσονται (will go away) οὗτοι (these) εἰς (into) κόλασιν (punishment) αἰώνιον (eternal); οἱ (-) δὲ (but) δίκαιοι (the righteous) εἰς (into) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal).”

³⁶ Ὁ (The one) θερίζων (reaping) μισθὸν (a reward) λαμβάνει (receives) καὶ (and) συνάγει (gathers) καρπὸν (fruit) εἰς (unto) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal), ἵνα (so that) ὁ (the one) σπείρων (sowing) ὁμοῦ (together) χαίρῃ (may rejoice), καὶ (and) ὁ (the one) θερίζων (reaping).

² πᾶν (Every) κλῆμα (branch) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me) μὴ (not) φέρον (bearing) καρπὸν (fruit), αἴρει (He takes away) αὐτό (it); καὶ (and) πᾶν (every one) τὸ (-) καρπὸν (fruit) φέρον (bearing), καθαίρει (He prunes) αὐτὸ (it), ἵνα (that) καρπὸν (fruit) πλείονα (more) φέρῃ (it may bear).

¹⁶ οὐχ (Not) ὑμεῖς (you) με (Me) ἐξελέξασθε (chose), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐγὼ (I) ἐξελεξάμην (chose) ὑμᾶς (you), καὶ (and) ἔθηκα (appointed) ὑμᾶς (you) ἵνα (that) ὑμεῖς (you) ὑπάγητε (should go) καὶ (and) καρπὸν (fruit) φέρητε (you should bear), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) καρπὸς (fruit) ὑμῶν (of you) μένῃ (should remain); ἵνα (so that) ὅ¦τι (whatever) ἂν (-) αἰτήσητε (you might ask) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ὀνόματί (name) μου (of Me), δῷ (He may give) ὑμῖν (you).

¹⁸ ἐλευθερωθέντες (Having been set free) δὲ (now) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (-) ἁμαρτίας (sin), ἐδουλώθητε (you have become slaves) τῇ (-) δικαιοσύνῃ (to righteousness).

²¹ τίνα (What) οὖν (therefore) καρπὸν (fruit) εἴχετε (had you) τότε (then) ἐφ’ (in the things) οἷς (of which) νῦν (now) ἐπαισχύνεσθε (you are ashamed)? τὸ (The) γὰρ (for) τέλος (end) ἐκείνων (of those things) θάνατος (is death).

²⁵ χάρις (Thanks be) [δὲ] (then) τῷ (to) Θεῷ (God), διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us)! Ἄρα (Then) οὖν (so), αὐτὸς (myself) ἐγὼ (I) τῷ (with the) μὲν (indeed) νοῒ (mind) δουλεύω (serve) νόμῳ (law) Θεοῦ (God’s), τῇ (-) δὲ (but with) σαρκὶ (the flesh) νόμῳ (the law) ἁμαρτίας (of sin).

⁵⁰ οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) ἄρτος (bread) ὁ (-) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (-) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) καταβαίνων (coming down), ἵνα (that) τις (anyone) ἐξ (of) αὐτοῦ (it) φάγῃ (may eat), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ἀποθάνῃ (die). ⁵¹ ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ὁ (the) ἄρτος (bread) ὁ (-) ζῶν (living), ὁ (-) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (-) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) καταβάς (having come down); ἐάν (if) τις (anyone) φάγῃ (shall have eaten) ἐκ (of) τούτου (this) τοῦ (-) ἄρτου (bread), ζήσει (he will live) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age); καὶ (and) ὁ (the) ἄρτος (bread) δὲ (also) ὃν (that) ἐγὼ (I) δώσω (will give), ἡ (the) σάρξ (flesh) μού (of Me) ἐστιν (is) ὑπὲρ (for) τῆς (the) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world) ζωῆς (life).” ⁵² Ἐμάχοντο (Were arguing) οὖν (therefore) πρὸς (with) ἀλλήλους (one another) οἱ (the) Ἰουδαῖοι (Jews), λέγοντες (saying), “Πῶς (How) δύναται (is able) οὗτος (this man) ἡμῖν (us) δοῦναι (to give) τὴν (the) σάρκα (flesh) ‹αὐτοῦ› (of Him) φαγεῖν (to eat)?” ⁵³ Εἶπεν (Said) οὖν (therefore) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἀμὴν (Truly), ἀμὴν (truly), λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), ἐὰν (if) μὴ (not) φάγητε (you shall have eaten) τὴν (the) σάρκα (flesh) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son) τοῦ (-) ἀνθρώπου (of Man), καὶ (and) πίητε (shall have drunk) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τὸ (the) αἷμα (blood), οὐκ (not) ἔχετε (you have) ζωὴν (life) ἐν (in) ἑαυτοῖς (yourselves). ⁵⁴ ὁ (The one) τρώγων (eating) μου (of Me) τὴν (the) σάρκα (flesh), καὶ (and) πίνων (drinking) μου (of Me) τὸ (the) αἷμα (blood), ἔχει (has) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal), κἀγὼ (and I) ἀναστήσω (will raise up) αὐτὸν (him) τῇ (in the) ἐσχάτῃ (last) ἡμέρᾳ (day). ⁵⁵ ἡ (The) γὰρ (for) σάρξ (flesh) μου (of Me), ἀληθής (true) ἐστιν (is) βρῶσις (food), καὶ (and) τὸ (the) αἷμά (blood) μου (of Me), ἀληθής (true) ἐστιν (is) πόσις (drink). ⁵⁶ Ὁ (The one) τρώγων (eating) μου (of Me) τὴν (the) σάρκα (flesh) καὶ (and) πίνων (drinking) μου (of Me) τὸ (the) αἷμα (blood), ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (Me) μένει (abides), κἀγὼ (and I) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him). ⁵⁷ καθὼς (As) ἀπέστειλέν (sent) με (Me) ὁ (the) ζῶν (living) Πατὴρ (Father), κἀγὼ (and I) ζῶ (live) διὰ (because of) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father), καὶ (also) ὁ (the one) τρώγων (feeding on) με (Me), κἀκεῖνος (he also) ζήσει (will live) δι’ (because of) ἐμέ (Me). ⁵⁸ οὗτός (This) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) ἄρτος (bread) ὁ (-) ἐξ (from) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) καταβάς (having come down), οὐ (not) καθὼς (as) ἔφαγον (ate) οἱ (the) πατέρες (fathers) καὶ (and) ἀπέθανον (died). ὁ (The one) τρώγων (eating) τοῦτον (this) τὸν (-) ἄρτον (bread) ζήσει (will live) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age).”

⁶⁸ Ἀπεκρίθη (Answered) αὐτῷ (Him) Σίμων (Simon) Πέτρος (Peter), “Κύριε (Lord), πρὸς (to) τίνα (whom) ἀπελευσόμεθα (will we go)? ῥήματα (The words) ζωῆς (of life) αἰωνίου (eternal) ἔχεις (You have);

²⁸ κἀγὼ (and I) δίδωμι (give) αὐτοῖς (them) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal); καὶ (and) οὐ (never) μὴ (not) ἀπόλωνται (shall they perish), εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age), καὶ (and) οὐχ (never) ἁρπάσει (will seize) τις (anyone) αὐτὰ (them) ἐκ (out of) τῆς (the) χειρός (hand) μου (of Me).

² καθὼς (As) ἔδωκας (You gave) αὐτῷ (Him) ἐξουσίαν (authority) πάσης (over all) σαρκός (flesh), ἵνα (so that) πᾶν (all) ὃ (whom) δέδωκας (You have given) αὐτῷ (Him), δώσῃ (He may give) αὐτοῖς (to them) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal).

⁷ τοῖς (to those who) μὲν (indeed) καθ’ (with) ὑπομονὴν (endurance) ἔργου (in work) ἀγαθοῦ (good), δόξαν (glory) καὶ (and) τιμὴν (honor) καὶ (and) ἀφθαρσίαν (immortality) ζητοῦσιν (are seeking), ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal);

¹⁷ εἰ (If) γὰρ (for), τῷ (by the) τοῦ (of the) ἑνὸς (one) παραπτώματι (trespass), ὁ (-) θάνατος (death) ἐβασίλευσεν (reigned) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) ἑνός (one), πολλῷ (how much) μᾶλλον (more) οἱ (those) τὴν (the) περισσείαν (abundance) τῆς (-) χάριτος (of grace), καὶ (and) τῆς (of the) δωρεᾶς (gift) τῆς (-) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness) λαμβάνοντες (receiving), ἐν (in) ζωῇ (life) βασιλεύσουσιν (will reign) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) ἑνὸς (one), Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ)!

⁹ Ἢ (Or) οὐκ (not) οἴδατε (know you) ὅτι (that) ἄδικοι (the unrighteous ones) Θεοῦ (of God) βασιλείαν (the kingdom) οὐ (not) κληρονομήσουσιν (will inherit)? μὴ (Not) πλανᾶσθε (be deceived): οὔτε (neither) πόρνοι (the sexually immoral), οὔτε (nor) εἰδωλολάτραι (idolaters), οὔτε (nor) μοιχοὶ (adulterers), οὔτε (nor) μαλακοὶ (effeminate), οὔτε (nor) ἀρσενοκοῖται (homosexuals), ¹⁰ οὔτε (nor) κλέπται (thieves), οὔτε (nor) πλεονέκται (coveters), οὐ (not) μέθυσοι (drunkards), οὐ (nor) λοίδοροι (verbal abusers), οὐχ (nor) ἅρπαγες (swindlers), βασιλείαν (the kingdom) Θεοῦ (of God) κληρονομήσουσιν (will inherit).

¹⁰ Ὅσοι (As many as) γὰρ (for) ἐξ (of) ἔργων (works) νόμου (of the Law) εἰσὶν (are), ὑπὸ (under) κατάραν (a curse) εἰσίν (are); γέγραπται (it has been written) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (-): “Ἐπικατάρατος (Cursed is) πᾶς (everyone) ὃς (who) οὐκ (not) ἐμμένει (does continue) πᾶσιν (all things) τοῖς (-) γεγραμμένοις (having been written) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) βιβλίῳ (book) τοῦ (of the) νόμου (Law), τοῦ (-) ποιῆσαι (to do) αὐτά (them).”

² ἐπ’ (in) ἐλπίδι (the hope) ζωῆς (of life) αἰωνίου (eternal), ἣν (which) ἐπηγγείλατο (promised) ὁ (-) ἀψευδὴς (who cannot lie), Θεὸς (God), πρὸ (before) χρόνων (time) αἰωνίων (eternal); ³ Εὐλογητὸς (Blessed be) ὁ (the) Θεὸς (God) καὶ (and) Πατὴρ (Father) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), ὁ (the One) κατὰ (according to) τὸ (the) πολὺ (great) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἔλεος (mercy) ἀναγεννήσας (having begotten again) ἡμᾶς (us) εἰς (to) ἐλπίδα (a hope) ζῶσαν (living), δι’ (through) ἀναστάσεως (the resurrection) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead), ⁴ εἰς (to) κληρονομίαν (an inheritance) ἄφθαρτον (imperishable) καὶ (and) ἀμίαντον (undefiled) καὶ (and) ἀμάραντον (unfading), τετηρημένην (being reserved) ἐν (in) οὐρανοῖς (the heavens) εἰς (for) ὑμᾶς (you),

²⁵ καὶ (And) αὕτη (this) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) ἐπαγγελία (promise) ἣν (that) αὐτὸς (He) ἐπηγγείλατο (promised) ἡμῖν (us): τὴν (-) ζωὴν (life) τὴν (-) αἰώνιον (eternal).

¹¹ Καὶ (And) αὕτη (this) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (the) μαρτυρία (testimony), ὅτι (that) ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal) ἔδωκεν (has given) «ὁ (-) Θεὸς» (God) ἡμῖν (to us), καὶ (and) αὕτη (this) ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) Υἱῷ (Son) αὐτοῦ (His) ἐστιν (is). ¹² ὁ (The one) ἔχων (having) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) ἔχει (has) τὴν (-) ζωήν (life); ὁ (the one) μὴ (not) ἔχων (having) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), τὴν (-) ζωὴν (life) οὐκ (not) ἔχει (has).

⁸ Τοῖς (-) δὲ (But) δειλοῖς (to the cowardly) καὶ (and) ἀπίστοις (unbelieving) καὶ (and) ἐβδελυγμένοις (having become abominable) καὶ (and) φονεῦσιν (murderers) καὶ (and) πόρνοις (the sexually immoral) καὶ (and) φαρμάκοις (sorcerers) καὶ (and) εἰδωλολάτραις (idolaters) καὶ (and) πᾶσιν (all) τοῖς (-) ψευδέσιν (liars), τὸ (the) μέρος (portion) αὐτῶν (of them) ἐν (is in) τῇ (the) λίμνῃ (lake) τῇ (-) καιομένῃ (burning) πυρὶ (with fire) καὶ (and) θείῳ (brimstone), ὅ (which) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (the) θάνατος (death) ὁ (-) δεύτερος (second).”
