¹ Ἢ (Or) ἀγνοεῖτε (are you ignorant), ἀδελφοί (brothers)— γινώσκουσιν (to those knowing) γὰρ (for) νόμον (law) λαλῶ (I speak)— ὅτι (that) ὁ (the) νόμος (law) κυριεύει (rules over) τοῦ (the) ἀνθρώπου (man) ἐφ’ (for) ὅσον (as long as) χρόνον (the time) ζῇ (he is alive)? ² ἡ (The) γὰρ (for) ὕπανδρος (married) γυνὴ (woman), τῷ (to the) ζῶντι (living) ἀνδρὶ (husband) δέδεται (is bound) νόμῳ (by law); ἐὰν (if) δὲ (however) ἀποθάνῃ (should die) ὁ (the) ἀνήρ (husband), κατήργηται (she is cleared) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law) τοῦ (of the) ἀνδρός (husband). ³ ἄρα (Then) οὖν (therefore), ζῶντος (being alive) τοῦ (the) ἀνδρὸς (husband), μοιχαλὶς (an adulteress) χρηματίσει (she will be called) ἐὰν (if) γένηται (she is) ἀνδρὶ (to man) ἑτέρῳ (another); ἐὰν (if) δὲ (however) ἀποθάνῃ (should die) ὁ (the) ἀνήρ (husband), ἐλευθέρα (free) ἐστὶν (she is) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law), τοῦ (so as for) μὴ (not) εἶναι (to be) αὐτὴν (her) μοιχαλίδα (an adulteress), γενομένην (having been) ἀνδρὶ (to man) ἑτέρῳ (another). ⁴ Ὥστε (Likewise), ἀδελφοί (brothers) μου (of me), καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) ἐθανατώθητε (have been put to death) τῷ (to the) νόμῳ (law) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) σώματος (body) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) γενέσθαι (to belong) ὑμᾶς (you) ἑτέρῳ (to another), τῷ (to the One) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead) ἐγερθέντι (having been raised), ἵνα (so that) καρποφορήσωμεν (we should bear fruit) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God). ⁵ ὅτε (While) γὰρ (for) ἦμεν (we were) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σαρκί (flesh), τὰ (the) παθήματα (passions) τῶν (-) ἁμαρτιῶν (of sins) τὰ (that were) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law) ἐνηργεῖτο (were at work) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) μέλεσιν (members) ἡμῶν (of us), εἰς (to) τὸ (the) καρποφορῆσαι (bringing forth of fruit) τῷ (-) θανάτῳ (to death). ⁶ νυνὶ (Now) δὲ (however) κατηργήθημεν (we have been released) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law), ἀποθανόντες (having died) ἐν (to) ᾧ (that which) κατειχόμεθα (we were bound), ὥστε (in order for) δουλεύειν (to serve) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐν (in) καινότητι (newness) πνεύματος (of the Spirit), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) παλαιότητι (in oldness) γράμματος (of the letter). ⁷ Τί (What) οὖν (then) ἐροῦμεν (shall we say)? ὁ (Is the) νόμος (law) ἁμαρτία (sin)? μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)! ἀλλὰ (But) τὴν (-) ἁμαρτίαν (sin) οὐκ (not) ἔγνων (I have known), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) διὰ (by) νόμου (law); τήν (-) τε (then) γὰρ (for) ἐπιθυμίαν (covetousness), οὐκ (not) ᾔδειν (I had been conscious of), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὁ (the) νόμος (law) ἔλεγεν (had said), “Οὐκ (Not) ἐπιθυμήσεις (you shall covet).” ⁸ ἀφορμὴν (An occasion) δὲ (however) λαβοῦσα (having taken) ἡ (-) ἁμαρτία (sin) διὰ (by) τῆς (the) ἐντολῆς (commandment), κατειργάσατο (it produced) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (me) πᾶσαν (all) ἐπιθυμίαν (covetousness); χωρὶς (apart from) γὰρ (for) νόμου (the Law), ἁμαρτία (sin) νεκρά (is dead). ⁹ Ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) ἔζων (was alive) χωρὶς (apart from) νόμου (law) ποτέ (once); ἐλθούσης (having come) δὲ (however) τῆς (the) ἐντολῆς (commandment), ἡ (the) ἁμαρτία (sin) ἀνέζησεν (revived); ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (then) ἀπέθανον (died). ¹⁰ καὶ (And) εὑρέθη (proved to be) μοι (me) ἡ (the) ἐντολὴ (commandment) ἡ (that was) εἰς (to) ζωὴν (life), αὕτη (this) εἰς (to) θάνατον (death). ¹¹ ἡ (The) γὰρ (for) ἁμαρτία (sin), ἀφορμὴν (an occasion) λαβοῦσα (having taken) διὰ (by) τῆς (the) ἐντολῆς (commandment), ἐξηπάτησέν (deceived) με (me), καὶ (and) δι’ (by) αὐτῆς (it) ἀπέκτεινεν (put me to death). ¹² Ὥστε (So) ὁ (-) μὲν (indeed) νόμος (the law is) ἅγιος (holy), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἐντολὴ (commandment is) ἁγία (holy) καὶ (and) δικαία (righteous) καὶ (and) ἀγαθή (good). ¹³ Τὸ (That which) οὖν (then) ἀγαθὸν (is good), ἐμοὶ (to me) ἐγένετο (has become) θάνατος (death)? μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)! ἀλλὰ (But) ἡ (-) ἁμαρτία (sin), ἵνα (in order that) φανῇ (it might be shown to be) ἁμαρτία (sin), διὰ (through) τοῦ (that which is) ἀγαθοῦ (good) μοι (to me) κατεργαζομένη (is working out) θάνατον (death); ἵνα (so that) γένηται (might become) καθ’ (beyond) ὑπερβολὴν (excess) ἁμαρτωλὸς (sinful), ἡ (-) ἁμαρτία (sin) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) ἐντολῆς (commandment). ¹⁴ Οἴδαμεν (We know) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) ὁ (the) νόμος (Law) πνευματικός (spiritual) ἐστιν (is); ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) σάρκινός (fleshly) εἰμι (am), πεπραμένος (having been sold) ὑπὸ (under) τὴν (-) ἁμαρτίαν (sin). ¹⁵ ὃ (What) γὰρ (for) κατεργάζομαι (I do), οὐ (not) γινώσκω (I understand); οὐ (not) γὰρ (for) ὃ (what) θέλω (I want), τοῦτο (this) πράσσω (I do); ἀλλ’ (but) ὃ (what) μισῶ (I hate), τοῦτο (this) ποιῶ (I do). ¹⁶ εἰ (If) δὲ (now) ὃ (that which) οὐ (not) θέλω (I do want), τοῦτο (this) ποιῶ (I do), σύμφημι (I consent) τῷ (to the) νόμῳ (law), ὅτι (that it is) καλός (good). ¹⁷ νυνὶ (In that case) δὲ (now), οὐκέτι (no longer) ἐγὼ (I) κατεργάζομαι (am doing) αὐτὸ (it), ἀλλὰ (but) ἡ (the) οἰκοῦσα* (dwelling) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (me) ἁμαρτία (sin). ¹⁸ Οἶδα (I know) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) οὐκ (nothing) οἰκεῖ (there dwells) ἐν (in) ἐμοί (me), τοῦτ’ (that) ἔστιν (is) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σαρκί (flesh) μου (of me), ἀγαθόν (good); τὸ (-) γὰρ (for) θέλειν (to will) παράκειταί (is present with) μοι (me), τὸ (-) δὲ (but) κατεργάζεσθαι (to do) τὸ (the) καλὸν (good), οὔ (not). ¹⁹ οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ὃ (that) θέλω (I desire) ποιῶ (I do) ἀγαθόν (good), ἀλλὰ (but) ὃ (that) οὐ (not) θέλω (I do want) κακὸν (evil), τοῦτο (this) πράσσω (I practice). ²⁰ εἰ (If) δὲ (now) ὃ (what) οὐ (not) θέλω (I do want), ἐγὼ (I) τοῦτο (this) ποιῶ (do), οὐκέτι (it is no longer) ἐγὼ (I) κατεργάζομαι (who do) αὐτὸ (it), ἀλλὰ (but) ἡ (-) οἰκοῦσα (dwelling) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (me) ἁμαρτία (sin). ²¹ Εὑρίσκω (I find) ἄρα (so) τὸν (the) νόμον (principle), τῷ (that) θέλοντι (desiring) ἐμοὶ (me) ποιεῖν (to do) τὸ (-) καλὸν (good), ὅτι (that) ἐμοὶ (me) τὸ (-) κακὸν (evil) παράκειται (is present with). ²² συνήδομαι (I delight) γὰρ (for) τῷ (in the) νόμῳ (law) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), κατὰ (according to) τὸν (the) ἔσω (inward) ἄνθρωπον (man); ²³ βλέπω (I see) δὲ (however) ἕτερον (another) νόμον (law) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) μέλεσίν (members) μου (of me), ἀντιστρατευόμενον (warring against) τῷ (the) νόμῳ (law) τοῦ (of the) νοός (mind) μου (of me), καὶ (and) αἰχμαλωτίζοντά (making captive) με (me) ἐν (to) τῷ (the) νόμῳ (law) τῆς (-) ἁμαρτίας (of sin), τῷ (-) ὄντι (being) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) μέλεσίν (members) μου (of me). ²⁴ Ταλαίπωρος (O wretched) ἐγὼ (I am) ἄνθρωπος (man)! τίς (Who) με (me) ῥύσεται (will deliver) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) σώματος (body) τοῦ (-) θανάτου (of death) τούτου (this)? ²⁵ χάρις (Thanks be) [δὲ] (then) τῷ (to) Θεῷ (God), διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us)! Ἄρα (Then) οὖν (so), αὐτὸς (myself) ἐγὼ (I) τῷ (with the) μὲν (indeed) νοῒ (mind) δουλεύω (serve) νόμῳ (law) Θεοῦ (God’s), τῇ (-) δὲ (but with) σαρκὶ (the flesh) νόμῳ (the law) ἁμαρτίας (of sin).

¹³ Οὐ (Not) θέλω (I do want) δὲ (now) ὑμᾶς (you) ἀγνοεῖν (to be ignorant), ἀδελφοί (brothers), ὅτι (that) πολλάκις (many times) προεθέμην (I purposed) ἐλθεῖν (to come) πρὸς (to) ὑμᾶς (you), καὶ (and) ἐκωλύθην (was hindered), ἄχρι (until) τοῦ (the) δεῦρο (present), ἵνα (that) τινὰ (some) καρπὸν (fruit) σχῶ (I might have) καὶ (also) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you), καθὼς (as) καὶ (even) ἐν (among) τοῖς (the) λοιποῖς (other) ἔθνεσιν (Gentiles).

¹⁷ Εἰ (If) δὲ (however) σὺ (you) Ἰουδαῖος (a Jew) ἐπονομάζῃ (are called), καὶ (and) ἐπαναπαύῃ (rely on) νόμῳ (the law), καὶ (and) καυχᾶσαι (boast) ἐν (in) Θεῷ (God); ¹⁸ καὶ (and) γινώσκεις (know) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will), καὶ (and) δοκιμάζεις (approve) τὰ (the things) διαφέροντα (being superior), κατηχούμενος (being instructed) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law);

³ ἢ (Or) ἀγνοεῖτε (are you unaware) ὅτι (that) ὅσοι (as many as) ἐβαπτίσθημεν (have been baptized) εἰς (into) Χριστὸν (Christ) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), εἰς (into) τὸν (the) θάνατον (death) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐβαπτίσθημεν (have been baptized)?

¹⁴ ἁμαρτία (Sin) γὰρ (for) ὑμῶν (you) οὐ (not) κυριεύσει (will rule over), οὐ (not) γάρ (for) ἐστε (you are) ὑπὸ (under) νόμον (law), ἀλλὰ (but) ὑπὸ (under) χάριν (grace).

⁶ νυνὶ (Now) δὲ (however) κατηργήθημεν (we have been released) ἀπὸ (from) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law), ἀποθανόντες (having died) ἐν (to) ᾧ (that which) κατειχόμεθα (we were bound), ὥστε (in order for) δουλεύειν (to serve) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐν (in) καινότητι (newness) πνεύματος (of the Spirit), καὶ (and) οὐ (not) παλαιότητι (in oldness) γράμματος (of the letter).

³ ηὐχόμην (Could wish) γὰρ (for) ἀνάθεμα (a curse) εἶναι (to be) αὐτὸς (myself) ἐγὼ (I), ἀπὸ (separated from) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (Christ) ὑπὲρ (for) τῶν (the) ἀδελφῶν (brothers) μου (of me), τῶν (-) συγγενῶν (kinsmen) μου (of me), κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (the flesh);

¹ Ἀδελφοί (Brothers), ἡ (the) μὲν (indeed) εὐδοκία (desire) τῆς (-) ἐμῆς (of my) καρδίας (heart) καὶ (and) ἡ (the) δέησις (supplication) πρὸς (to) τὸν (-) Θεὸν (God) ὑπὲρ (on behalf of) αὐτῶν (them) εἰς (is for) σωτηρίαν (salvation).

⁸ Μὴ (Not) κατὰ (according to) ἄνθρωπον (man), ταῦτα (these things) λαλῶ (do I speak)? ἢ (Or) καὶ (also) ὁ (the) νόμος (law) ταῦτα (these things) οὐ (not) λέγει (says)?

²¹ Λέγετέ (Tell) μοι (me), οἱ (those) ὑπὸ (under) νόμον (the Law) θέλοντες (wishing) εἶναι (to be), τὸν (the) νόμον (Law) οὐκ (not) ἀκούετε (you do listen to)?

⁴ ἡ (The) γυνὴ (wife), τοῦ (the) ἰδίου (own) σώματος (body) οὐκ (not) ἐξουσιάζει (has authority over), ἀλλὰ (but) ὁ (the) ἀνήρ (husband); ὁμοίως (likewise) δὲ (now), καὶ (also) ὁ (the) ἀνὴρ (husband) τοῦ (of the) ἰδίου (own) σώματος (body) οὐκ (not) ἐξουσιάζει (has authority over), ἀλλὰ (but) ἡ (the) γυνή (wife).

³⁹ Γυνὴ (A wife) δέδεται (is bound) ἐφ’ (for) ὅσον (as long as) χρόνον (time) ζῇ (may live) ὁ (the) ἀνὴρ (husband) αὐτῆς (of her); ἐὰν (if) δὲ (however) κοιμηθῇ (shall have died) ὁ (the) ἀνήρ (husband), ἐλευθέρα (free) ἐστὶν (she is) ᾧ (to whom) θέλει (she wills) γαμηθῆναι (to be married), μόνον (only) ἐν (in) Κυρίῳ (the Lord).

³² ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) λέγω (say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ἀπολύων (divorcing) τὴν (the) γυναῖκα (wife) αὐτοῦ (of him), παρεκτὸς (except) λόγου (on account) πορνείας (of sexual immorality), ποιεῖ (causes) αὐτὴν (her) μοιχευθῆναι (to commit adultery). καὶ (And) ὃς (whoever) ἐὰν (if) ἀπολελυμένην (her having been divorced) γαμήσῃ (shall marry), μοιχᾶται (commits adultery).

⁶ ἀπὸ (From), δὲ (however), ἀρχῆς (the beginning) κτίσεως (of creation), ‘Ἄρσεν (Male) καὶ (and) θῆλυ (female) ἐποίησεν (He made) αὐτούς (them).’ ⁷ ‘Ἕνεκεν (On account of) τούτου (this), καταλείψει (will leave) ἄνθρωπος (a man) τὸν (the) πατέρα (father) αὐτοῦ (of him) καὶ (and) τὴν (-) μητέρα (mother) ‹καὶ (and) προσκολληθήσεται (be joined) πρὸς (to) τὴν (-) γυναῖκα (wife) αὐτοῦ› (his), ⁸ καὶ (and) ἔσονται (will be) οἱ (the) δύο (two) εἰς (for) σάρκα (flesh) μίαν (one).’ ὥστε (Therefore) οὐκέτι (no longer) εἰσὶν (they are) δύο (two), ἀλλὰ (but) μία (one) σάρξ (flesh). ⁹ ὃ (What) οὖν (therefore) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) συνέζευξεν (has joined together), ἄνθρωπος (man) μὴ (not) χωριζέτω (let separate).” ¹⁰ Καὶ (And) εἰς (in) τὴν (the) οἰκίαν (house) πάλιν (again), οἱ (the) μαθηταὶ (disciples) περὶ (concerning) τούτου (this) ἐπηρώτων (were asking) αὐτόν (Him). ¹¹ καὶ (And) λέγει (He says) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Ὃς (Whoever) ἂν (-) ἀπολύσῃ (shall divorce) τὴν (the) γυναῖκα (wife) αὐτοῦ (of him), καὶ (and) γαμήσῃ (shall marry) ἄλλην (another), μοιχᾶται (commits adultery) ἐπ’ (against) αὐτήν (her). ¹² καὶ (And) ἐὰν (if) αὐτὴ (a woman), ἀπολύσασα (having divorced) τὸν (the) ἄνδρα (husband) αὐτῆς (of her), γαμήσῃ (should marry) ἄλλον (another), μοιχᾶται (she commits adultery).”

³ ἄγουσιν* (Bring) δὲ (now) οἱ (the) γραμματεῖς (scribes) καὶ (and) οἱ (the) Φαρισαῖοι (Pharisees) 〈πρὸς (to) αὐτὸν〉 (Him) γυναῖκα (a woman) ἐπὶ* (in) μοιχείᾳ (adultery) κατειλημμένην (having been caught), καὶ (and) στήσαντες (having set) αὐτὴν (her) ἐν (in) μέσῳ (the midst), ⁴ λέγουσιν (they say) αὐτῷ (to Him), “Διδάσκαλε (Teacher), αὕτη (this) ἡ (-) γυνὴ (woman) κατείληπται* (was caught) ἐπ’* (in) αυτοφώρῳ* (the very act), μοιχευομένη (committing adultery). ⁵ ἐν (In) δὲ (now) τῷ (the) νόμῳ (law), Μωϋσῆς* (Moses) ἡμῖν (us) ἐνετείλατο (commanded) τὰς (-) τοιαύτας (such) λιθάζειν* (to be stoned). σὺ (You) οὖν (therefore), τί (what) λέγεις (say You)?”

¹¹ Νεωτέρας (Younger) δὲ (however) χήρας (widows) παραιτοῦ (refuse); ὅταν (when) γὰρ (for) καταστρηνιάσωσιν (they might grow wanton against) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (Christ), γαμεῖν (to marry) θέλουσιν (they desire), ¹² ἔχουσαι (incurring) κρίμα (judgment) ὅτι (because) τὴν (the) πρώτην (first) πίστιν (faith) ἠθέτησαν (they have cast off). ¹³ ἅμα (At the same time) δὲ (then) καὶ (also) ἀργαὶ (to be idle) μανθάνουσιν (they learn), περιερχόμεναι (going about) τὰς (-) οἰκίας (house to house); οὐ (not) μόνον (only) δὲ (then) ἀργαὶ (idle), ἀλλὰ (but) καὶ (also) φλύαροι (gossips) καὶ (and) περίεργοι (busybodies), λαλοῦσαι (speaking) τὰ (things) μὴ (not) δέοντα (being proper). ¹⁴ Βούλομαι (I want) οὖν (therefore) νεωτέρας (the younger ones) γαμεῖν (to marry), τεκνογονεῖν (to bear children), οἰκοδεσποτεῖν (to manage their households), μηδεμίαν (no) ἀφορμὴν (occasion) διδόναι (to give) τῷ (the one) ἀντικειμένῳ (opposing) λοιδορίας (of reproach) χάριν (on account).

²⁶ Ἐσθιόντων (As they were eating) δὲ (now) αὐτῶν (of them), λαβὼν (having taken) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus) ἄρτον (bread), καὶ (and) εὐλογήσας (having blessed), ἔκλασεν (broke it), καὶ (and) δοὺς (having given) τοῖς (to the) μαθηταῖς (disciples), εἶπεν (He said), “Λάβετε (Take), φάγετε (eat); τοῦτό (this) ἐστιν (is) τὸ (the) σῶμά (body) μου (of Me).”

²⁹ Ὁ (The one) ἔχων (having) τὴν (the) νύμφην (bride), νυμφίος (the bridegroom) ἐστίν (is); ὁ (the) δὲ (now) φίλος (friend) τοῦ (of the) νυμφίου (bridegroom), ὁ (the one) ἑστηκὼς (standing) καὶ (and) ἀκούων (listening for) αὐτοῦ (him), χαρᾷ (with joy) χαίρει (rejoices) διὰ (because of) τὴν (the) φωνὴν (voice) τοῦ (of the) νυμφίου (bridegroom). αὕτη (This) οὖν (therefore), ἡ (the) χαρὰ (joy) ἡ (-) ἐμὴ (of mine), πεπλήρωται (is fulfilled).

⁵¹ ἐγώ (I) εἰμι (am) ὁ (the) ἄρτος (bread) ὁ (-) ζῶν (living), ὁ (-) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (-) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) καταβάς (having come down); ἐάν (if) τις (anyone) φάγῃ (shall have eaten) ἐκ (of) τούτου (this) τοῦ (-) ἄρτου (bread), ζήσει (he will live) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) αἰῶνα (age); καὶ (and) ὁ (the) ἄρτος (bread) δὲ (also) ὃν (that) ἐγὼ (I) δώσω (will give), ἡ (the) σάρξ (flesh) μού (of Me) ἐστιν (is) ὑπὲρ (for) τῆς (the) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world) ζωῆς (life).”

⁸ ἐν (In) τούτῳ (this) ἐδοξάσθη (is glorified) ὁ (the) Πατήρ (Father) μου (of Me), ἵνα (that) καρπὸν (fruit) πολὺν (much) φέρητε (you should bear), καὶ (and) γένησθε* (you shall be) ἐμοὶ (to Me) μαθηταί (disciples).

² μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)! οἵτινες (Who) ἀπεθάνομεν (we died) τῇ (-) ἁμαρτίᾳ (to sin), πῶς (how) ἔτι (still) ζήσομεν (shall we live) ἐν (in) αὐτῇ (it)?

²² νυνὶ (Now) δέ (however), ἐλευθερωθέντες (having been set free) ἀπὸ (from) τῆς (-) ἁμαρτίας (sin), δουλωθέντες (having become slaves) δὲ (now) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), ἔχετε (you have) τὸν (the) καρπὸν (fruit) ὑμῶν (of you) εἰς (unto) ἁγιασμόν (sanctification); τὸ (-) δὲ (now) τέλος (the end) ζωὴν (is life) αἰώνιον (eternal).

¹⁶ Τὸ (The) ποτήριον (cup) τῆς (-) εὐλογίας (of blessing) ὃ (that) εὐλογοῦμεν (we bless), οὐχὶ (not) κοινωνία (a participation) ἐστὶν (is it) τοῦ (in the) αἵματος (blood) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ)? τὸν (The) ἄρτον (bread) ὃν (that) κλῶμεν (we break), οὐχὶ (not) κοινωνία (a participation) τοῦ (in the) σώματος (body) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) ἐστιν (is it)?

² ζηλῶ (I am jealous as to) γὰρ (for) ὑμᾶς (you) Θεοῦ (of God) ζήλῳ (with the jealousy); ἡρμοσάμην (I have betrothed) γὰρ (for) ὑμᾶς (you) ἑνὶ (to one) ἀνδρὶ (husband), παρθένον (a virgin) ἁγνὴν (pure) παραστῆσαι (to present) τῷ (-) Χριστῷ (to Christ).

¹⁹ ἐγὼ (I) γὰρ (for), διὰ (through) νόμου (the Law) νόμῳ (to the Law) ἀπέθανον (died), ἵνα (that) Θεῷ (to God) ζήσω (I might live). ²⁰ Χριστῷ (Christ) συνεσταύρωμαι (I have been crucified with); ζῶ (I live) δὲ (now), οὐκέτι (no longer) ἐγώ (I); ζῇ (lives) δὲ (however) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (me) Χριστός (Christ); ὃ (that which) δὲ (then) νῦν (now) ζῶ (I live) ἐν (in) σαρκί (the flesh), ἐν (through) πίστει (faith) ζῶ (I live), τῇ (that) τοῦ (from the) Υἱοῦ (Son) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), τοῦ (the One) ἀγαπήσαντός (having loved) με (me) καὶ (and) παραδόντος (having given up) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) ὑπὲρ (for) ἐμοῦ (me).

¹³ Χριστὸς (Christ) ἡμᾶς (us) ἐξηγόρασεν (redeemed) ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) κατάρας (curse) τοῦ (of the) νόμου (Law), γενόμενος (having become) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us) κατάρα (a curse), ὅτι (for) γέγραπται (it has been written): “Ἐπικατάρατος (Cursed is) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) κρεμάμενος (hanging) ἐπὶ (on) ξύλου (a tree)” —

¹⁸ εἰ (If) δὲ (however) Πνεύματι (the Spirit) ἄγεσθε (you are led by), οὐκ (not) ἐστὲ (you are) ὑπὸ (under) νόμον (the Law).

²² Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) καρπὸς (the fruit) τοῦ (of the) Πνεύματός (Spirit) ἐστιν (is) ἀγάπη (love), χαρά (joy), εἰρήνη (peace), μακροθυμία (patience), χρηστότης (kindness), ἀγαθωσύνη (goodness), πίστις (faithfulness), ²³ πραΰτης (gentleness), ἐγκράτεια (self-control); κατὰ (against) τῶν (things) τοιούτων (such), οὐκ (no) ἔστιν (there is) νόμος (law).

¹⁵ ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σαρκὶ (flesh) αὐτοῦ (of Him), τὸν (the) νόμον (law) τῶν (-) ἐντολῶν (of commandments) ἐν (in) δόγμασιν (ordinances) καταργήσας (having annulled), ἵνα (so that) τοὺς (the) δύο (two) κτίσῃ (He might create) ἐν (in) αὑτῷ (Himself) εἰς (into) ἕνα (one) καινὸν (new) ἄνθρωπον (man), ποιῶν (making) εἰρήνην (peace);

²³ ὅτι (for) ἀνήρ (the husband) ἐστιν (is) κεφαλὴ (head) τῆς (of the) γυναικὸς (wife), ὡς (as) καὶ (also) ὁ (-) Χριστὸς (Christ) κεφαλὴ (is the head) τῆς (of the) ἐκκλησίας (church), αὐτὸς (He Himself) σωτὴρ (Savior) τοῦ (of the) σώματος (body). ²⁴ ἀλλὰ (But) ὡς (even as) ἡ (the) ἐκκλησία (church) ὑποτάσσεται (is subjected) τῷ (-) Χριστῷ (to Christ), οὕτως (so) καὶ (also) αἱ (-) γυναῖκες (wives) τοῖς (to the own) ἀνδράσιν (husbands) ἐν (in) παντί (everything). ²⁵ Οἱ (-) ἄνδρες (Husbands), ἀγαπᾶτε (love) τὰς (the) γυναῖκας (wives), καθὼς (just as) καὶ (also) ὁ (-) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἠγάπησεν (loved) τὴν (the) ἐκκλησίαν (church) καὶ (and) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) παρέδωκεν (gave up) ὑπὲρ (for) αὐτῆς (her), ²⁶ ἵνα (so that) αὐτὴν (her) ἁγιάσῃ (He might sanctify), καθαρίσας (having cleansed her) τῷ (by the) λουτρῷ (washing) τοῦ (-) ὕδατος (of water) ἐν (by) ῥήματι (the word), ²⁷ ἵνα (so that) παραστήσῃ (might present) αὐτὸς (He) ἑαυτῷ (to Himself) ἔνδοξον (in glory) τὴν (the) ἐκκλησίαν (church), μὴ (not) ἔχουσαν (having) σπίλον (spot) ἢ (or) ῥυτίδα (wrinkle) ἤ (or) τι (any) τῶν (of the) τοιούτων (such things), ἀλλ’ (but) ἵνα (that) ᾖ (it would be) ἁγία (holy) καὶ (and) ἄμωμος (blameless).

¹¹ πεπληρωμένοι (being filled) καρπὸν (with the fruit) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness) τὸν (that is) διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), εἰς (to) δόξαν (the glory) καὶ (and) ἔπαινον (praise) Θεοῦ (of God).

¹⁷ Οὐχ (Not) ὅτι (that) ἐπιζητῶ (I seek after) τὸ (the) δόμα (gift), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐπιζητῶ (I seek after) τὸν (the) καρπὸν (fruit) τὸν (-) πλεονάζοντα (abounding) εἰς (to) λόγον (the account) ὑμῶν (of you).

¹⁰ περιπατῆσαι (to walk) ἀξίως (worthily) τοῦ (of the) Κυρίου (Lord): εἰς (in) πᾶσαν (all) ἀρεσκείαν (pleasing), ἐν (in) παντὶ (every) ἔργῳ (work) ἀγαθῷ (good), καρποφοροῦντες (bringing forth fruit) καὶ (and) αὐξανόμενοι (growing) τῇ (in the) ἐπιγνώσει (knowledge) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God),

¹⁴ ἐξαλείψας (having blotted out) τὸ (the) καθ’ (against) ἡμῶν (us) χειρόγραφον (handwriting) τοῖς (in the) δόγμασιν (decrees), ὃ (which) ἦν (was) ὑπεναντίον (adverse) ἡμῖν (to us); καὶ (and) αὐτὸ (it) ἦρκεν (He has taken) ἐκ (out of) τοῦ (the) μέσου (way), προσηλώσας (having nailed) αὐτὸ (it) τῷ (to the) σταυρῷ (cross).

²⁰ Εἰ (If) ἀπεθάνετε (you have died) σὺν (with) Χριστῷ (Christ) ἀπὸ (away from) τῶν (the) στοιχείων (principles) τοῦ (of the) κόσμου (world), τί (why) ὡς (as if) ζῶντες (living) ἐν (in) κόσμῳ (the world), δογματίζεσθε (do you submit to decrees):

¹⁰ ἐν (By) ᾧ (that) θελήματι (will), ἡγιασμένοι (having been sanctified) ἐσμὲν (we are), διὰ (through) τῆς (the) προσφορᾶς (offering) τοῦ (of the) σώματος (body) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) ἐφάπαξ (once for all).

²⁴ ὃς (Who) τὰς (the) ἁμαρτίας (sins) ἡμῶν (of us) αὐτὸς (Himself) ἀνήνεγκεν (bore) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) σώματι (body) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἐπὶ (on) τὸ (the) ξύλον (tree), ἵνα (so that), ταῖς (-) ἁμαρτίαις (to sins) ἀπογενόμενοι (having been dead), τῇ (-) δικαιοσύνῃ (to righteousness) ζήσωμεν (we might live). “Οὗ (By whose) τῷ (-) μώλωπι (wounds) ἰάθητε (you have been healed).”

⁷ χαίρωμεν (We should rejoice) καὶ (and) ἀγαλλιῶμεν (should exult), καὶ (and) δώσομεν (will give) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) αὐτῷ (to Him), ὅτι (because) ἦλθεν (has come) ὁ (the) γάμος (marriage) τοῦ (of the) Ἀρνίου (Lamb), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) γυνὴ (bride) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἡτοίμασεν (has made ready) ἑαυτήν (herself).

⁹ Καὶ (And) ἦλθεν (came) εἷς (one) ἐκ (of) τῶν (the) ἑπτὰ (seven) ἀγγέλων (angels), τῶν (-) ἐχόντων (having) τὰς (the) ἑπτὰ (seven) φιάλας (bowls) τῶν (-) γεμόντων (being full) τῶν (of the) ἑπτὰ (seven) πληγῶν (plagues) τῶν (-) ἐσχάτων (last), καὶ (and) ἐλάλησεν (spoke) μετ’ (with) ἐμοῦ (me), λέγων (saying), “Δεῦρο (Come here), δείξω (I will show) σοι (you) τὴν (the) νύμφην (bride), τὴν (the) γυναῖκα (wife) τοῦ (of the) ἀρνίου (Lamb).”

¹⁹ ἐκ (Out of) γὰρ (for) τῆς (the) καρδίας (heart) ἐξέρχονται (come forth) διαλογισμοὶ (thoughts) πονηροί (evil), φόνοι (murders), μοιχεῖαι (adulteries), πορνεῖαι (sexual immorality), κλοπαί (thefts), ψευδομαρτυρίαι (false testimonies), βλασφημίαι (slanders).

⁶ τὸ (That) γεγεννημένον (having been born) ἐκ (of) τῆς (the) σαρκὸς (flesh), σάρξ (flesh) ἐστιν (is); καὶ (and) τὸ (that) γεγεννημένον (having been born) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (the) Πνεύματος (Spirit), πνεῦμά (spirit) ἐστιν (is).

²⁶ Διὰ (Because of) τοῦτο (this) παρέδωκεν (gave up) αὐτοὺς (them) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) εἰς (to) πάθη (passions) ἀτιμίας (of dishonor). αἵ (-) τε (Even) γὰρ (for) θήλειαι (females) αὐτῶν (of them) μετήλλαξαν (changed) τὴν (the) φυσικὴν (natural) χρῆσιν (use) εἰς (into) τὴν (that) παρὰ (contrary to) φύσιν (nature).

²⁰ διότι (Therefore) ἐξ (by) ἔργων (works) νόμου (of the Law) οὐ (not) δικαιωθήσεται (will be justified) πᾶσα (any) σὰρξ (flesh) ἐνώπιον (before) αὐτοῦ (Him); διὰ (through) γὰρ (for) νόμου (the Law) ἐπίγνωσις (is knowledge) ἁμαρτίας (of sin).

¹⁵ ὁ (-) γὰρ (For) νόμος (law) ὀργὴν (wrath) κατεργάζεται (brings); οὗ (where) δὲ (now) οὐκ (no) ἔστιν (there is) νόμος (law), οὐδὲ (neither is) παράβασις (transgression).

²⁰ Νόμος (The law) δὲ (now) παρεισῆλθεν (entered), ἵνα (so that) πλεονάσῃ (might abound) τὸ (the) παράπτωμα (trespass); οὗ (where) δὲ (however) ἐπλεόνασεν (abounded) ἡ (-) ἁμαρτία (sin), ὑπερεπερίσσευσεν (overabounded) ἡ (-) χάρις (grace),

¹³ μηδὲ (Neither) παριστάνετε (yield) τὰ (the) μέλη (members) ὑμῶν (of you) ὅπλα (as instruments) ἀδικίας (of unrighteousness) τῇ (-) ἁμαρτίᾳ (to sin), ἀλλὰ (but) παραστήσατε (yield) ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God), ὡσεὶ (as) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead) ζῶντας (living), καὶ (and) τὰ (the) μέλη (members) ὑμῶν (of you), ὅπλα (as instruments) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God).

¹⁹ Ἀνθρώπινον (In human terms) λέγω (I speak) διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) ἀσθένειαν (weakness) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh) ὑμῶν (of you). ὥσπερ (For as) γὰρ (for) παρεστήσατε (you yielded) τὰ (the) μέλη (members) ὑμῶν (of you) δοῦλα (in bondage) τῇ (-) ἀκαθαρσίᾳ (to impurity) καὶ (and) τῇ (to) ἀνομίᾳ (lawlessness) εἰς (unto) τὴν (-) ἀνομίαν (lawlessness), οὕτως (so) νῦν (now) παραστήσατε (yield) τὰ (the) μέλη (members) ὑμῶν (of you) δοῦλα (in bondage) τῇ (-) δικαιοσύνῃ (to righteousness) εἰς (unto) ἁγιασμόν (sanctification).

²¹ τίνα (What) οὖν (therefore) καρπὸν (fruit) εἴχετε (had you) τότε (then) ἐφ’ (in the things) οἷς (of which) νῦν (now) ἐπαισχύνεσθε (you are ashamed)? τὸ (The) γὰρ (for) τέλος (end) ἐκείνων (of those things) θάνατος (is death).

²³ τὰ (The) γὰρ (for) ὀψώνια (wages) τῆς (-) ἁμαρτίας (of sin) θάνατος (is death); τὸ (-) δὲ (but) χάρισμα (the gift) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ζωὴ (life) αἰώνιος (eternal) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) τῷ (the) Κυρίῳ (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us).

⁷ Τί (What) οὖν (then) ἐροῦμεν (shall we say)? ὁ (Is the) νόμος (law) ἁμαρτία (sin)? μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)! ἀλλὰ (But) τὴν (-) ἁμαρτίαν (sin) οὐκ (not) ἔγνων (I have known), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) διὰ (by) νόμου (law); τήν (-) τε (then) γὰρ (for) ἐπιθυμίαν (covetousness), οὐκ (not) ᾔδειν (I had been conscious of), εἰ (if) μὴ (not) ὁ (the) νόμος (law) ἔλεγεν (had said), “Οὐκ (Not) ἐπιθυμήσεις (you shall covet).” ⁸ ἀφορμὴν (An occasion) δὲ (however) λαβοῦσα (having taken) ἡ (-) ἁμαρτία (sin) διὰ (by) τῆς (the) ἐντολῆς (commandment), κατειργάσατο (it produced) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (me) πᾶσαν (all) ἐπιθυμίαν (covetousness); χωρὶς (apart from) γὰρ (for) νόμου (the Law), ἁμαρτία (sin) νεκρά (is dead). ⁹ Ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) ἔζων (was alive) χωρὶς (apart from) νόμου (law) ποτέ (once); ἐλθούσης (having come) δὲ (however) τῆς (the) ἐντολῆς (commandment), ἡ (the) ἁμαρτία (sin) ἀνέζησεν (revived); ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (then) ἀπέθανον (died). ¹⁰ καὶ (And) εὑρέθη (proved to be) μοι (me) ἡ (the) ἐντολὴ (commandment) ἡ (that was) εἰς (to) ζωὴν (life), αὕτη (this) εἰς (to) θάνατον (death). ¹¹ ἡ (The) γὰρ (for) ἁμαρτία (sin), ἀφορμὴν (an occasion) λαβοῦσα (having taken) διὰ (by) τῆς (the) ἐντολῆς (commandment), ἐξηπάτησέν (deceived) με (me), καὶ (and) δι’ (by) αὐτῆς (it) ἀπέκτεινεν (put me to death). ¹² Ὥστε (So) ὁ (-) μὲν (indeed) νόμος (the law is) ἅγιος (holy), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἐντολὴ (commandment is) ἁγία (holy) καὶ (and) δικαία (righteous) καὶ (and) ἀγαθή (good). ¹³ Τὸ (That which) οὖν (then) ἀγαθὸν (is good), ἐμοὶ (to me) ἐγένετο (has become) θάνατος (death)? μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)! ἀλλὰ (But) ἡ (-) ἁμαρτία (sin), ἵνα (in order that) φανῇ (it might be shown to be) ἁμαρτία (sin), διὰ (through) τοῦ (that which is) ἀγαθοῦ (good) μοι (to me) κατεργαζομένη (is working out) θάνατον (death); ἵνα (so that) γένηται (might become) καθ’ (beyond) ὑπερβολὴν (excess) ἁμαρτωλὸς (sinful), ἡ (-) ἁμαρτία (sin) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) ἐντολῆς (commandment).

²³ βλέπω (I see) δὲ (however) ἕτερον (another) νόμον (law) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) μέλεσίν (members) μου (of me), ἀντιστρατευόμενον (warring against) τῷ (the) νόμῳ (law) τοῦ (of the) νοός (mind) μου (of me), καὶ (and) αἰχμαλωτίζοντά (making captive) με (me) ἐν (to) τῷ (the) νόμῳ (law) τῆς (-) ἁμαρτίας (of sin), τῷ (-) ὄντι (being) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) μέλεσίν (members) μου (of me).

⁸ οἱ (Those) δὲ (now) ἐν (in) σαρκὶ (flesh) ὄντες (being), Θεῷ (God) ἀρέσαι (to please) οὐ (not) δύνανται (are able). ⁹ Ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (now) οὐκ (not) ἐστὲ (are) ἐν (in) σαρκὶ (flesh), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐν (in) πνεύματι (Spirit), εἴπερ (if indeed the) Πνεῦμα (Spirit) Θεοῦ (of God) οἰκεῖ (dwells) ἐν (in) ὑμῖν (you); εἰ (if) δέ (however) τις (anyone) Πνεῦμα (the Spirit) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) οὐκ (not) ἔχει (has), οὗτος (he) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) αὐτοῦ (of Him).

⁵⁶ Τὸ (-) δὲ (And) κέντρον (the sting) τοῦ (-) θανάτου (of death is) ἡ (-) ἁμαρτία (sin); ἡ (-) δὲ (and) δύναμις (the power) τῆς (-) ἁμαρτίας (of sin), ὁ (the) νόμος (law);

⁶ ὃς (who) καὶ (also) ἱκάνωσεν (has made competent) ἡμᾶς (us as) διακόνους (ministers) καινῆς (of a new) διαθήκης (covenant), οὐ (not) γράμματος (of the letter) ἀλλὰ (but) πνεύματος (of the Spirit); τὸ (the) γὰρ (for) γράμμα (letter) ἀποκτέννει* (kills), τὸ (-) δὲ (but) πνεῦμα (the Spirit) ζωοποιεῖ (gives life). ⁷ Εἰ (If) δὲ (now) ἡ (the) διακονία (ministry) τοῦ (-) θανάτου (of death), ἐν (in) γράμμασιν (letters) ἐντετυπωμένη (having been engraved) λίθοις (on stones), ἐγενήθη (was produced) ἐν (in) δόξῃ (glory), ὥστε (so as for) μὴ (not) δύνασθαι (to be able) ἀτενίσαι (to look intently) τοὺς (the) υἱοὺς (sons) Ἰσραὴλ (of Israel) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πρόσωπον (face) Μωϋσέως (of Moses), διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) τοῦ (of the) προσώπου (face) αὐτοῦ (of him), τὴν (which) καταργουμένην (is fading), ⁸ πῶς (how) οὐχὶ (not) μᾶλλον (more), ἡ (the) διακονία (ministry) τοῦ (of the) πνεύματος (Spirit) ἔσται (will be) ἐν (in) δόξῃ (glory)? ⁹ εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) τῇ* (in the) διακονία (ministry) τῆς (-) κατακρίσεως (of condemnation was) δόξα (glory), πολλῷ (much) μᾶλλον (more) περισσεύει (abounds) ἡ (the) διακονία (ministry) τῆς (-) δικαιοσύνης (of righteousness) δόξῃ (in glory)! ¹⁰ Ὅσοι (As many as) γὰρ (for) ἐξ (of) ἔργων (works) νόμου (of the Law) εἰσὶν (are), ὑπὸ (under) κατάραν (a curse) εἰσίν (are); γέγραπται (it has been written) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (-): “Ἐπικατάρατος (Cursed is) πᾶς (everyone) ὃς (who) οὐκ (not) ἐμμένει (does continue) πᾶσιν (all things) τοῖς (-) γεγραμμένοις (having been written) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) βιβλίῳ (book) τοῦ (of the) νόμου (Law), τοῦ (-) ποιῆσαι (to do) αὐτά (them).”

¹⁶ Λέγω (I say) δέ (now), Πνεύματι (by the Spirit) περιπατεῖτε (walk), καὶ (and) ἐπιθυμίαν (the desire) σαρκὸς (of the flesh) οὐ (no) μὴ (not) τελέσητε (you should gratify). ¹⁷ ἡ (The) γὰρ (for) σὰρξ (flesh) ἐπιθυμεῖ (desires), κατὰ (against) τοῦ (the) Πνεύματος (Spirit), τὸ (-) δὲ (and) Πνεῦμα (the Spirit) κατὰ (against) τῆς (the) σαρκός (flesh); ταῦτα (these) γὰρ (for) ἀλλήλοις (to one another) ἀντίκειται (are opposed), ἵνα (in order) μὴ (not) ἃ (that) ἐὰν (if) θέλητε (you might wish) ταῦτα (those things) ποιῆτε (you should do).

¹⁹ Φανερὰ (Evident) δέ (now) ἐστιν (are) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) τῆς (of the) σαρκός (flesh), ἅτινά (which) ἐστιν (are) πορνεία (sexual immorality), ἀκαθαρσία (impurity), ἀσέλγεια (sensuality), ²⁰ εἰδωλολατρία (idolatry), φαρμακεία (sorcery), ἔχθραι (enmities), ἔρις (strife), ζῆλος (jealousy), θυμοί (outbursts of anger), ἐριθεῖαι (contentions), διχοστασίαι (dissensions), αἱρέσεις (factions), ²¹ φθόνοι (envyings), μέθαι (drunkennesses), κῶμοι (carousing), καὶ (and) τὰ (things) ὅμοια (like) τούτοις (these), ἃ (as to which) προλέγω (I forewarn) ὑμῖν (you), καθὼς (even as) προεῖπον (I warned before), ὅτι (that) οἱ (those) τὰ (such) τοιαῦτα (things) πράσσοντες (doing), βασιλείαν (kingdom) Θεοῦ (God’s) οὐ (not) κληρονομήσουσιν (will inherit).

²⁴ Οἱ (Those) δὲ (now) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), τὴν (the) σάρκα (flesh) ἐσταύρωσαν (have crucified) σὺν (with) τοῖς (its) παθήμασιν (passions) καὶ (and) ταῖς (-) ἐπιθυμίαις (desires).

³ ἐν (among) οἷς (whom) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we) πάντες (all) ἀνεστράφημέν (lived) ποτε (once) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἐπιθυμίαις (desires) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh) ἡμῶν (of us), ποιοῦντες (doing) τὰ (the) θελήματα (things willed) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh), καὶ (and) τῶν (of its) διανοιῶν (thoughts); καὶ (and) ἤμεθα (we were) τέκνα (children), φύσει (by nature), ὀργῆς (of wrath), ὡς (as) καὶ (even) οἱ (the) λοιποί (rest).

¹¹ Διὸ (Therefore) μνημονεύετε (remember) ὅτι (that) ποτὲ (formerly) ὑμεῖς (you) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles) ἐν (in) σαρκί (the flesh), οἱ (the ones) λεγόμενοι (being called) ἀκροβυστία (the uncircumcision) ὑπὸ (by) τῆς (that) λεγομένης (being called) περιτομῆς (the circumcision), ἐν (in) σαρκὶ (the flesh) χειροποιήτου (made by hands)—

⁵ Νεκρώσατε (Put to death) οὖν (therefore) τὰ (the) μέλη (members) τὰ (which are) ἐπὶ (upon) τῆς (the) γῆς (earth): πορνείαν (sexual immorality), ἀκαθαρσίαν (impurity), πάθος (passion), ἐπιθυμίαν (desire) κακήν (evil), καὶ (and) τὴν (-) πλεονεξίαν (covetousness), ἥτις (which) ἐστὶν (is) εἰδωλολατρία (idolatry),

³ Ἦμεν (Were) γάρ (for) ποτε (once) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we ourselves) ἀνόητοι (foolish), ἀπειθεῖς (disobedient), πλανώμενοι (being deceived), δουλεύοντες (serving) ἐπιθυμίαις (lusts) καὶ (and) ἡδοναῖς (pleasures) ποικίλαις (various), ἐν (in) κακίᾳ (malice) καὶ (and) φθόνῳ (envy) διάγοντες (living), στυγητοί (hateful), μισοῦντες (hating) ἀλλήλους (one another).

¹⁵ εἶτα (Then) ἡ (-) ἐπιθυμία (desire), συλλαβοῦσα (having conceived), τίκτει (gives birth to) ἁμαρτίαν (sin); ἡ (-) δὲ (and) ἁμαρτία (sin) ἀποτελεσθεῖσα (having become fully grown), ἀποκύει (brings forth) θάνατον (death).

⁹ εἰ (If) δὲ (however) προσωπολημπτεῖτε (you show partiality), ἁμαρτίαν (sin) ἐργάζεσθε (you are committing), ἐλεγχόμενοι (being convicted) ὑπὸ (by) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law) ὡς (as) παραβάται (transgressors). ¹⁰ Ὅστις (Whoever) γὰρ (for) ὅλον (all) τὸν (the) νόμον (law) τηρήσῃ (shall keep), πταίσῃ (shall stumble) δὲ (but) ἐν (in) ἑνί (one point), γέγονεν (he has become) πάντων (of all) ἔνοχος (guilty).

¹ Πόθεν (From where) πόλεμοι (come disputes) καὶ (and) πόθεν (from where) μάχαι (quarrels) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you)? οὐκ (Is it not) ἐντεῦθεν (from there), ἐκ (out of) τῶν (the) ἡδονῶν (passions) ὑμῶν (of you) τῶν (-) στρατευομένων (warring) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) μέλεσιν (members) ὑμῶν (of you)?

⁴ Πᾶς (Everyone) ὁ (-) ποιῶν (committing) τὴν (-) ἁμαρτίαν (sin), καὶ (also) τὴν (-) ἀνομίαν (lawlessness) ποιεῖ (commits); καὶ (and) ἡ (-) ἁμαρτία (sin) ἐστὶν (is) ἡ (-) ἀνομία (lawlessness).

⁹ μάρτυς (Witness) γάρ (for) μού (my) ἐστιν (is) ὁ (-) Θεός (God), ᾧ (whom) λατρεύω (I serve) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) πνεύματί (spirit) μου (of me) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) εὐαγγελίῳ (gospel) τοῦ (of the) Υἱοῦ (Son) αὐτοῦ (of Him), ὡς (how) ἀδιαλείπτως (unceasingly) μνείαν (mention) ὑμῶν (of you) ποιοῦμαι (I make),

²⁷ καὶ (And) κρινεῖ (will judge) ἡ (the) ἐκ (by) φύσεως (nature) ἀκροβυστία (uncircumcision), τὸν (the) νόμον (law) τελοῦσα (fulfilling), σὲ (you) τὸν (who) διὰ (with) γράμματος (the letter) καὶ (and) περιτομῆς (circumcision) παραβάτην (are a transgressor) νόμου (of law). ²⁸ Οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ὁ (the one) ἐν (on) τῷ (the) φανερῷ (outward) Ἰουδαῖός (a Jew) ἐστιν (is); οὐδὲ (neither) ἡ (the one) ἐν (outwardly), τῷ (the) φανερῷ (outward) ἐν (in) σαρκὶ (flesh), περιτομή (is circumcision); ²⁹ ἀλλ’ (but) ὁ (he who is) ἐν (on) τῷ (the) κρυπτῷ (inward) Ἰουδαῖος (a Jew is one); καὶ (and) περιτομὴ (circumcision is) καρδίας (of heart), ἐν (in) πνεύματι (spirit), οὐ (not) γράμματι (in letter); οὗ (of whom) ὁ (the) ἔπαινος (praise) οὐκ (is not) ἐξ (of) ἀνθρώπων (men), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐκ (of) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God).

⁴ συνετάφημεν (We were buried) οὖν (therefore) αὐτῷ (with Him) διὰ (through) τοῦ (-) βαπτίσματος (baptism) εἰς (into) τὸν (-) θάνατον (death), ἵνα (so that) ὥσπερ (just as) ἠγέρθη (was raised up) Χριστὸς (Christ) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead) διὰ (by) τῆς (the) δόξης (glory) τοῦ (of the) Πατρός (Father), οὕτως (so) καὶ (also) ἡμεῖς (we) ἐν (in) καινότητι (newness) ζωῆς (of life) περιπατήσωμεν (should walk).

¹¹ οὕτως (So) καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you), λογίζεσθε (consider) ἑαυτοὺς (yourselves) εἶναι (to be) νεκροὺς (dead) μὲν (indeed) τῇ (-) ἁμαρτίᾳ (to sin), ζῶντας (living) δὲ (however) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus).

¹⁴ ἁμαρτία (Sin) γὰρ (for) ὑμῶν (you) οὐ (not) κυριεύσει (will rule over), οὐ (not) γάρ (for) ἐστε (you are) ὑπὸ (under) νόμον (law), ἀλλὰ (but) ὑπὸ (under) χάριν (grace). ¹⁵ Τί (What) οὖν (then)? ἁμαρτήσωμεν (Shall we sin) ὅτι (because) οὐκ (not) ἐσμὲν (we are) ὑπὸ (under) νόμον (law), ἀλλὰ (but) ὑπὸ (under) χάριν (grace)? μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)!

¹ Ἢ (Or) ἀγνοεῖτε (are you ignorant), ἀδελφοί (brothers)— γινώσκουσιν (to those knowing) γὰρ (for) νόμον (law) λαλῶ (I speak)— ὅτι (that) ὁ (the) νόμος (law) κυριεύει (rules over) τοῦ (the) ἀνθρώπου (man) ἐφ’ (for) ὅσον (as long as) χρόνον (the time) ζῇ (he is alive)?

⁴ Ὥστε (Likewise), ἀδελφοί (brothers) μου (of me), καὶ (also) ὑμεῖς (you) ἐθανατώθητε (have been put to death) τῷ (to the) νόμῳ (law) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) σώματος (body) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) γενέσθαι (to belong) ὑμᾶς (you) ἑτέρῳ (to another), τῷ (to the One) ἐκ (out from) νεκρῶν (the dead) ἐγερθέντι (having been raised), ἵνα (so that) καρποφορήσωμεν (we should bear fruit) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God).

² καὶ (And) μὴ (not) συσχηματίζεσθε (be conformed) τῷ (to the) αἰῶνι (age) τούτῳ (this), ἀλλὰ (but) μεταμορφοῦσθε (be transformed) τῇ (by the) ἀνακαινώσει (renewing) τοῦ (of the) νοός (mind), εἰς (for) τὸ (-) δοκιμάζειν (to prove) ὑμᾶς (by you), τί (what is) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), τὸ (-) ἀγαθὸν (good) καὶ (and) εὐάρεστον (well-pleasing) καὶ (and) τέλειον (perfect).

⁶ ὃς (who) καὶ (also) ἱκάνωσεν (has made competent) ἡμᾶς (us as) διακόνους (ministers) καινῆς (of a new) διαθήκης (covenant), οὐ (not) γράμματος (of the letter) ἀλλὰ (but) πνεύματος (of the Spirit); τὸ (the) γὰρ (for) γράμμα (letter) ἀποκτέννει* (kills), τὸ (-) δὲ (but) πνεῦμα (the Spirit) ζωοποιεῖ (gives life).

¹⁷ ὥστε (Therefore) εἴ (if) τις (anyone) ἐν (is in) Χριστῷ (Christ), καινὴ (he is a new) κτίσις (creation). τὰ (The) ἀρχαῖα (old things) παρῆλθεν (have passed away); ἰδοὺ (behold), γέγονεν (has come into being) καινά (the new).

²³ Πρὸ (Before) τοῦ (-) δὲ (now) ἐλθεῖν (came) τὴν (-) πίστιν (faith), ὑπὸ (under) νόμον (the Law) ἐφρουρούμεθα (we were held in custody), συνκλειόμενοι (having been locked up) εἰς (until) τὴν (the) μέλλουσαν (being about) πίστιν (faith) ἀποκαλυφθῆναι (to be revealed), ²⁴ ὥστε (so that) ὁ (the) νόμος (Law) παιδαγωγὸς (trainer) ἡμῶν (of us) γέγονεν (has become), εἰς (unto) Χριστόν (Christ), ἵνα (so that) ἐκ (by) πίστεως (faith) δικαιωθῶμεν (we might be justified). ²⁵ ἐλθούσης (Having come) δὲ (now) τῆς (-) πίστεως (faith), οὐκέτι (no longer) ὑπὸ (under) παιδαγωγόν (a trainer) ἐσμεν (we are).

⁴ Ὅτε (When) δὲ (however) ἦλθεν (had come) τὸ (the) πλήρωμα (fullness) τοῦ (of the) χρόνου (time), ἐξαπέστειλεν (sent forth) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) τὸν (the) Υἱὸν (Son) αὐτοῦ (of him), γενόμενον (having been born) ἐκ (of) γυναικός (a woman), γενόμενον (having been born) ὑπὸ (under) νόμον (the Law), ⁵ ἵνα (that) τοὺς (those) ὑπὸ (under) νόμον (the Law) ἐξαγοράσῃ (He might redeem), ἵνα (so that) τὴν (the) υἱοθεσίαν (divine adoption as sons) ἀπολάβωμεν (we might receive).

¹⁵ οὔτε (Neither) γὰρ (for) περιτομή (circumcision) τί (anything) ἐστιν (is), οὔτε (nor) ἀκροβυστία (uncircumcision); ἀλλὰ (instead) καινὴ (a new) κτίσις (creation).

³ ἡμεῖς (We) γάρ (for) ἐσμεν (are) ἡ (the) περιτομή (circumcision), οἱ (those) Πνεύματι (in the Spirit) Θεοῦ (of God) λατρεύοντες (worshiping) καὶ (and) καυχώμενοι (glorying) ἐν (in) Χριστῷ (Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), καὶ (and) οὐκ (not) ἐν (in) σαρκὶ (the flesh) πεποιθότες (having put confidence),

¹⁰ καὶ (and) ἐνδυσάμενοι (having put on) τὸν (the) νέον (new), τὸν (the one) ἀνακαινούμενον (being renewed) εἰς (in) ἐπίγνωσιν (knowledge) κατ’ (according to) εἰκόνα (the image) τοῦ (of the one) κτίσαντος (having created) αὐτόν (him),

²⁸ ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) λέγω (say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) βλέπων (looking upon) γυναῖκα (a woman) πρὸς (in order) τὸ (-) ἐπιθυμῆσαι (to lust after) αὐτὴν (her) ἤδη (already) ἐμοίχευσεν (has committed adultery with) αὐτὴν (her) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) καρδίᾳ (heart) αὐτοῦ (of him).

¹⁵ εἶπεν (He said) δὲ (then) πρὸς (to) αὐτούς (them), “Ὁρᾶτε (Beware) καὶ (and) φυλάσσεσθε (keep yourselves) ἀπὸ (from) πάσης (all) πλεονεξίας (covetousness); ὅτι (for) οὐκ (not) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) περισσεύειν (abundance) τινὶ (to anyone), ἡ (the) ζωὴ (life) αὐτοῦ (to him) ἐστιν (is) ἐκ (of) τῶν (that which) ὑπαρχόντων (possesses) αὐτῷ (of him).”

³³ Ἀργυρίου (Silver) ἢ (or) χρυσίου (gold) ἢ (or) ἱματισμοῦ (clothing) οὐδενὸς (of no one) ἐπεθύμησα (I coveted).

⁵ Εἰ (If) δὲ (however) ἡ (the) ἀδικία (unrighteousness) ἡμῶν (of us), Θεοῦ (God’s) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness) συνίστησιν (shows), τί (what) ἐροῦμεν (shall we say)? μὴ (Is) ἄδικος (unrighteous) ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God), ὁ (-) ἐπιφέρων (inflicting) τὴν (the) ὀργήν (wrath)? κατὰ (According to) ἄνθρωπον (man) λέγω (I speak).

¹ Τί (What) οὖν (then) ἐροῦμεν (shall we say) εὑρηκέναι (discovered) Ἀβραὰμ (Abraham), τὸν (the) προπάτορα (father) ἡμῶν (of us), κατὰ (according to) σάρκα (the flesh)?

¹⁵ Τί (What) οὖν (then)? ἁμαρτήσωμεν (Shall we sin) ὅτι (because) οὐκ (not) ἐσμὲν (we are) ὑπὸ (under) νόμον (law), ἀλλὰ (but) ὑπὸ (under) χάριν (grace)? μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)!

⁵ ὅτε (While) γὰρ (for) ἦμεν (we were) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σαρκί (flesh), τὰ (the) παθήματα (passions) τῶν (-) ἁμαρτιῶν (of sins) τὰ (that were) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law) ἐνηργεῖτο (were at work) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) μέλεσιν (members) ἡμῶν (of us), εἰς (to) τὸ (the) καρποφορῆσαι (bringing forth of fruit) τῷ (-) θανάτῳ (to death).

⁸ ἀφορμὴν (An occasion) δὲ (however) λαβοῦσα (having taken) ἡ (-) ἁμαρτία (sin) διὰ (by) τῆς (the) ἐντολῆς (commandment), κατειργάσατο (it produced) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (me) πᾶσαν (all) ἐπιθυμίαν (covetousness); χωρὶς (apart from) γὰρ (for) νόμου (the Law), ἁμαρτία (sin) νεκρά (is dead).

¹¹ ἡ (The) γὰρ (for) ἁμαρτία (sin), ἀφορμὴν (an occasion) λαβοῦσα (having taken) διὰ (by) τῆς (the) ἐντολῆς (commandment), ἐξηπάτησέν (deceived) με (me), καὶ (and) δι’ (by) αὐτῆς (it) ἀπέκτεινεν (put me to death).

¹³ Τὸ (That which) οὖν (then) ἀγαθὸν (is good), ἐμοὶ (to me) ἐγένετο (has become) θάνατος (death)? μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)! ἀλλὰ (But) ἡ (-) ἁμαρτία (sin), ἵνα (in order that) φανῇ (it might be shown to be) ἁμαρτία (sin), διὰ (through) τοῦ (that which is) ἀγαθοῦ (good) μοι (to me) κατεργαζομένη (is working out) θάνατον (death); ἵνα (so that) γένηται (might become) καθ’ (beyond) ὑπερβολὴν (excess) ἁμαρτωλὸς (sinful), ἡ (-) ἁμαρτία (sin) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) ἐντολῆς (commandment).

⁹ τὸ (-) γάρ (For), “Οὐ (Not) μοιχεύσεις (you shall commit adultery),” “Οὐ (Not) φονεύσεις (you shall murder),” “Οὐ (Not) κλέψεις (you shall steal),” “Οὐκ (Not) ἐπιθυμήσεις (you shall covet),” καὶ (and) εἴ (if) τις (any) ἑτέρα (other) ἐντολή (commandment), ἐν (in) τῷ (the) λόγῳ (word) τούτῳ (this) ἀνακεφαλαιοῦται (it is summed up), ἐν (in) τῷ (the saying): “Ἀγαπήσεις (You shall love) τὸν (the) πλησίον (neighbor) σου (of you) ὡς (as) σεαυτόν (yourself).”

³ Πορνεία (Sexual immorality) δὲ (however), καὶ (and) ἀκαθαρσία (impurity) πᾶσα (all), ἢ (or) πλεονεξία (covetousness), μηδὲ (not even) ὀνομαζέσθω (let be named) ἐν (among) ὑμῖν (you), καθὼς (as also) πρέπει (is proper) ἁγίοις (to saints),

⁵ μὴ (not) ἐν (in) πάθει (the passion) ἐπιθυμίας (of lust), καθάπερ (as) καὶ (also) τὰ (the) ἔθνη (Gentiles), τὰ (-) μὴ (not) εἰδότα (knowing) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God);

¹⁵ Μὴ (Not) ἀγαπᾶτε (love) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world) μηδὲ (nor) τὰ (the things) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world). ἐάν (If) τις (anyone) ἀγαπᾷ (should love) τὸν (the) κόσμον (world), οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἡ (the) ἀγάπη (love) τοῦ (of the) Πατρὸς (Father) ἐν (in) αὐτῷ (him), ¹⁶ ὅτι (because) πᾶν (all) τὸ (that is) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) κόσμῳ (world), ἡ (the) ἐπιθυμία (desire) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἐπιθυμία (desire) τῶν (of the) ὀφθαλμῶν (eyes), καὶ (and) ἡ (the) ἀλαζονεία* (vaunting) τοῦ (of) βίου (life), οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) πατρός (Father), ἀλλὰ (but) ἐκ (from) τοῦ (the) κόσμου (world) ἐστίν (is).

²² εἰ (If) μὴ (not) ἦλθον (I had come) καὶ (and) ἐλάλησα (spoken) αὐτοῖς (to them), ἁμαρτίαν (sin) οὐκ (not) εἴχοσαν (they would have had); νῦν (now) δὲ (however) πρόφασιν (excuse) οὐκ (not) ἔχουσιν (they have) περὶ (for) τῆς (the) ἁμαρτίας (sin) αὐτῶν (of them).

²⁴ εἰ (If) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) μὴ (not) ἐποίησα (I had done) ἐν (among) αὐτοῖς (them) ἃ (that) οὐδεὶς (no) ἄλλος (other) ἐποίησεν (has done), ἁμαρτίαν (sin) οὐκ (not) εἴχοσαν (they would have had); νῦν (now) δὲ (however) καὶ (both) ἑωράκασιν (they have seen) καὶ (and) μεμισήκασιν (have hated) καὶ (both) ἐμὲ (Me) καὶ (and) τὸν (the) Πατέρα (Father) μου (of Me).

¹⁷ νυνὶ (In that case) δὲ (now), οὐκέτι (no longer) ἐγὼ (I) κατεργάζομαι (am doing) αὐτὸ (it), ἀλλὰ (but) ἡ (the) οἰκοῦσα* (dwelling) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (me) ἁμαρτία (sin).

¹⁴ ἕκαστος (A man) δὲ (however) πειράζεται (is tempted), ὑπὸ (by) τῆς (the) ἰδίας (own) ἐπιθυμίας (desire) ἐξελκόμενος (being drawn away) καὶ (and) δελεαζόμενος (being enticed). ¹⁵ εἶτα (Then) ἡ (-) ἐπιθυμία (desire), συλλαβοῦσα (having conceived), τίκτει (gives birth to) ἁμαρτίαν (sin); ἡ (-) δὲ (and) ἁμαρτία (sin) ἀποτελεσθεῖσα (having become fully grown), ἀποκύει (brings forth) θάνατον (death).

²¹ Ἠκούσατε (You have heard) ὅτι (that) ἐρρέθη (it was said) τοῖς (to the) ἀρχαίοις (ancients), ‘Οὐ (Not) φονεύσεις (you shall murder); ὃς (whoever) δ’ (now) ἂν (-) φονεύσῃ (shall murder), ἔνοχος (liable) ἔσται (will be) τῇ (to the) κρίσει (judgment).’ ²² ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) λέγω (say) ὑμῖν (to you) ὅτι (that) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ὀργιζόμενος (being angry with) τῷ (the) ἀδελφῷ (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him) ἔνοχος (liable) ἔσται (will be) τῇ (to the) κρίσει (judgment); ὃς (whoever) δ’ (now) ἂν (-) εἴπῃ (shall say) τῷ (to) ἀδελφῷ (brother) αὐτοῦ (of him), ‘Ῥακά (Raca),’ ἔνοχος (liable) ἔσται (will be) τῷ (to the) συνεδρίῳ (Sanhedrin); ὃς (whoever) δ’ (now) ἂν (-) εἴπῃ (shall say), ‘Μωρέ (Fool),’ ἔνοχος (liable) ἔσται (will be) εἰς (to) τὴν (the) γέενναν (hell) τοῦ (-) πυρός (of fire). ²³ Ἐὰν (If) οὖν (therefore) προσφέρῃς (you shall offer) τὸ (the) δῶρόν (gift) σου (of you) ἐπὶ (at) τὸ (the) θυσιαστήριον (altar), κἀκεῖ (and there) μνησθῇς (shall remember) ὅτι (that) ὁ (the) ἀδελφός (brother) σου (of you) ἔχει (has) τι (something) κατὰ (against) σοῦ (you), ²⁴ ἄφες (leave) ἐκεῖ (there) τὸ (the) δῶρόν (gift) σου (of you) ἔμπροσθεν (before) τοῦ (the) θυσιαστηρίου (altar), καὶ (and) ὕπαγε (go away); πρῶτον (first) διαλλάγηθι (be reconciled) τῷ (to) ἀδελφῷ (brother) σου (of you); καὶ (and) τότε (then) ἐλθὼν (having come), πρόσφερε (offer) τὸ (the) δῶρόν (gift) σου (of you). ²⁵ ἴσθι (Be) εὐνοῶν (agreeing) τῷ (with) ἀντιδίκῳ (accuser) σου (of you) ταχὺ (quickly), ἕως (while) ὅτου (which) εἶ (you are) μετ’ (with) αὐτοῦ (him), ἐν (on) τῇ (the) ὁδῷ (way), μή‿ (lest) ποτέ (ever) σε (you) παραδῷ (deliver) ὁ (the) ἀντίδικος (accuser) τῷ (to the) κριτῇ (judge), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) κριτὴς (judge) τῷ (to the) ὑπηρέτῃ (officer), καὶ (and) εἰς (into) φυλακὴν (prison) βληθήσῃ (you will be cast). ²⁶ ἀμὴν (Truly) λέγω (I say) σοι (to you), οὐ (no) μὴ (not) ἐξέλθῃς (shall you come out) ἐκεῖθεν (from there), ἕως (until) ἂν (-) ἀποδῷς (you should pay) τὸν (the) ἔσχατον (last) κοδράντην (kodranten)!

⁴ ὁ (-) γὰρ (For) Θεὸς (God) εἶπεν (commanded), ‘Τίμα (Honor) τὸν (the) πατέρα (Father) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother)’ καί (and), ‘Ὁ (The one) κακολογῶν (speaking evil of) πατέρα (father) ἢ (or) μητέρα (mother), θανάτῳ (in death) τελευτάτω (must end).’ ⁵ ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) λέγετε (say), ‘Ὃς (Whoever) ἂν (-) εἴπῃ (shall say) τῷ (to the) πατρὶ (father) ἢ (or) τῇ (the) μητρί (mother), “Δῶρον (It is a gift), ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) ἐξ (by) ἐμοῦ (me) ὠφεληθῇς (you might be profited),” ⁶ οὐ (no) μὴ (not) τιμήσει (he shall honor) τὸν (the) πατέρα (father) αὐτοῦ (of himself) 〈ἢ (or) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother) αὐτοῦ〉 (of himself).’ καὶ (And) ἠκυρώσατε (you made void) τὸν (the) λόγον (commandment) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) παράδοσιν (tradition) ὑμῶν (of you)!

²⁰ Λέγει (Says) αὐτῷ (to him) ὁ (the) νεανίσκος (young man), “Ταῦτα (Things) πάντα (all these) ἐφύλαξα (I have kept). τί (What) ἔτι (yet) ὑστερῶ (lack I)?”

⁸ Ἀφέντες (Having neglected) τὴν (the) ἐντολὴν (commandment) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), κρατεῖτε (you hold) τὴν (to the) παράδοσιν (tradition) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (of men).” ⁹ Καὶ (And) ἔλεγεν (He was saying) αὐτοῖς (to them), “Καλῶς (Neatly) ἀθετεῖτε (do you set aside) τὴν (the) ἐντολὴν (commandment) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), ἵνα (that) τὴν (the) παράδοσιν (tradition) ὑμῶν (of you), τηρήσητε (you might keep). ¹⁰ Μωϋσῆς (Moses) γὰρ (for) εἶπεν (said), ‘Τίμα (Honor) τὸν (the) πατέρα (Father) σου (of you) καὶ (and) τὴν (the) μητέρα (mother) σου (of you),’ καί (and), ‘Ὁ (The one) κακολογῶν (speaking evil of) πατέρα (father) ἢ (or) μητέρα (mother), θανάτῳ (in death) τελευτάτω (must end).’ ¹¹ ὑμεῖς (You) δὲ (however) λέγετε (say that) Ἐὰν (if) εἴπῃ (says) ἄνθρωπος (a man) τῷ (to the) πατρὶ (father) ἢ (or) τῇ (the) μητρί (mother), ‘Κορβᾶν (It is Corban),’ ὅ (that) ἐστιν (is), Δῶρον (a gift), ‘Ὃ (whatever) ἐὰν (if) ἐξ (from) ἐμοῦ (me) ὠφεληθῇς (you might be profited),’ ¹² οὐκέτι (no longer) ἀφίετε (do you allow) αὐτὸν (him) οὐδὲν (anything) ποιῆσαι (to do) τῷ (for the) πατρὶ (father) ἢ (or) τῇ (the) μητρί (mother), ¹³ ἀκυροῦντες (making void) τὸν (the) λόγον (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) τῇ (for the) παραδόσει (tradition) ὑμῶν (of you) ᾗ (which) παρεδώκατε (you have handed down). καὶ (And) παρόμοια (like things) τοιαῦτα (such) πολλὰ (many) ποιεῖτε (you do).”

²⁵ Καὶ (And) ἰδοὺ (behold), νομικός (a lawyer) τις (certain) ἀνέστη (stood up), ἐκπειράζων (testing) αὐτὸν (Him), λέγων (saying), “Διδάσκαλε (Teacher), τί (what) ποιήσας (having done), ζωὴν (life) αἰώνιον (eternal) κληρονομήσω (will I inherit)?” ²⁶ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (He said) πρὸς (to) αὐτόν (him), “Ἐν (In) τῷ (the) νόμῳ (law) τί (what) γέγραπται (has been written)? πῶς (How) ἀναγινώσκεις (read you)?” ²⁷ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), εἶπεν (he said), “‘Ἀγαπήσεις (You shall love) Κύριον (the Lord) τὸν (the) Θεόν (God) σου (of you) ἐξ (with) ὅλης (all) τῆς (the) καρδίας (heart) σου (of you), καὶ (and) ἐν (with) ὅλῃ (all) τῇ (the) ψυχῇ (soul) σου (of you), καὶ (and) ἐν (with) ὅλῃ (all) τῇ (the) ἰσχύϊ (strength) σου (of you), καὶ (and) ἐν (with) ὅλῃ (all) τῇ (the) διανοίᾳ (mind) σου (of you)’ καὶ (and) ‘Τὸν (The) πλησίον (neighbor) σου (of you) ὡς (as) σεαυτόν (yourself).’” ²⁸ Εἶπεν (He said) δὲ (then) αὐτῷ (to him), “Ὀρθῶς (Correctly) ἀπεκρίθης (you have answered). τοῦτο (This) ποίει (do), καὶ (and) ζήσῃ (you will live).” ²⁹ Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) θέλων (desiring) δικαιῶσαι (to justify) ἑαυτὸν (himself), εἶπεν (he said) πρὸς (to) τὸν (-) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus), “Καὶ (And) τίς (who) ἐστίν (is) μου (my) πλησίον (neighbor)?”

²⁹ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) ἀποκριθεὶς (answering), εἶπεν (he said) τῷ (to) πατρὶ (the father) ‹αὐτοῦ› (of him), ‘Ἰδοὺ (Behold), τοσαῦτα (so many) ἔτη (years) δουλεύω (I serve) σοι (you), καὶ (and) οὐδέποτε (never) ἐντολήν (a commandment) σου (of you) παρῆλθον (I disobeyed), καὶ (and) ἐμοὶ (to me) οὐδέποτε (never) ἔδωκας (did you give) ἔριφον (a young goat), ἵνα (that) μετὰ (with) τῶν (the) φίλων (friends) μου (of me) εὐφρανθῶ (I might make merry).

⁹ Εἶπεν (He spoke) δὲ (now) καὶ (also) πρός (to) τινας (some) τοὺς (-) πεποιθότας (trusting) ἐφ’ (in) ἑαυτοῖς (themselves) ὅτι (that) εἰσὶν (they are) δίκαιοι (righteous), καὶ (and) ἐξουθενοῦντας (despising) τοὺς (the) λοιποὺς (others), τὴν (the) παραβολὴν (parable) ταύτην (this): ¹⁰ “Ἄνθρωποι (Men) δύο (two) ἀνέβησαν (went up) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) ἱερὸν (temple) προσεύξασθαι (to pray), ὁ (the) εἷς (one) Φαρισαῖος (a Pharisee), καὶ (and) ὁ (the) ἕτερος (other) τελώνης (a tax collector). ¹¹ ὁ (The) Φαρισαῖος (Pharisee), σταθεὶς (having stood), ταῦτα (thus) «πρὸς (toward) ἑαυτὸν» (himself) προσηύχετο (was praying), Ὁ (-) ‘Θεός (God), εὐχαριστῶ (I thank) σοι (You) ὅτι (that) οὐκ (not) εἰμὶ (I am) ὥσπερ (like) οἱ (the) λοιποὶ (rest) τῶν (of the) ἀνθρώπων (men) — ἅρπαγες (swindlers), ἄδικοι (unrighteous), μοιχοί (adulterers) — ἢ (or) καὶ (even) ὡς (like) οὗτος (this) ὁ (-) τελώνης (tax collector). ¹² νηστεύω (I fast) δὶς (twice) τοῦ (in the) σαββάτου (week); ἀποδεκατῶ (I tithe) πάντα (all things), ὅσα (as many as) κτῶμαι (I gain).’

²¹ Ὁ (-) δὲ (And) εἶπεν (he said), “Ταῦτα (These) πάντα (all) ἐφύλαξα (have I kept) ἐκ (from) νεότητος (the youth) ‹μου› (of me).”

¹⁹ Οἴδαμεν (We know) δὲ (now) ὅτι (that) ὅσα (whatever) ὁ (the) νόμος (law) λέγει (says), τοῖς (to those) ἐν (under) τῷ (the) νόμῳ (law) λαλεῖ (it speaks), ἵνα (so that) πᾶν (every) στόμα (mouth) φραγῇ (may be stopped), καὶ (and) ὑπόδικος (under judgment) γένηται (may be) πᾶς (all) ὁ (the) κόσμος (world) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God). ²⁰ διότι (Therefore) ἐξ (by) ἔργων (works) νόμου (of the Law) οὐ (not) δικαιωθήσεται (will be justified) πᾶσα (any) σὰρξ (flesh) ἐνώπιον (before) αὐτοῦ (Him); διὰ (through) γὰρ (for) νόμου (the Law) ἐπίγνωσις (is knowledge) ἁμαρτίας (of sin).

²¹ Εὑρίσκω (I find) ἄρα (so) τὸν (the) νόμον (principle), τῷ (that) θέλοντι (desiring) ἐμοὶ (me) ποιεῖν (to do) τὸ (-) καλὸν (good), ὅτι (that) ἐμοὶ (me) τὸ (-) κακὸν (evil) παράκειται (is present with). ²² συνήδομαι (I delight) γὰρ (for) τῷ (in the) νόμῳ (law) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God), κατὰ (according to) τὸν (the) ἔσω (inward) ἄνθρωπον (man); ²³ βλέπω (I see) δὲ (however) ἕτερον (another) νόμον (law) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) μέλεσίν (members) μου (of me), ἀντιστρατευόμενον (warring against) τῷ (the) νόμῳ (law) τοῦ (of the) νοός (mind) μου (of me), καὶ (and) αἰχμαλωτίζοντά (making captive) με (me) ἐν (to) τῷ (the) νόμῳ (law) τῆς (-) ἁμαρτίας (of sin), τῷ (-) ὄντι (being) ἐν (in) τοῖς (the) μέλεσίν (members) μου (of me).

⁷ διότι (because) τὸ (the) φρόνημα (mind) τῆς (of the) σαρκὸς (flesh) ἔχθρα (is hostility) εἰς (toward) Θεόν (God); τῷ (to) γὰρ (for) νόμῳ (the law) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) οὐχ (not) ὑποτάσσεται (it is subject), οὐδὲ (nor even) γὰρ (for) δύναται (can it be).

⁵ Μωϋσῆς (Moses) γὰρ (for) γράφει (writes) ὅτι (-) τὴν (of the) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness) τὴν (that is) ἐκ (of) ‹τοῦ› (the) νόμου (law), [ὅτι] (that) “Ὁ (The) ποιήσας (having done) [αὐτὰ] (these things) ἄνθρωπος (man), ζήσεται (will live) ἐν (by) αὐτῇ (them).”

¹⁹ ἐγὼ (I) γὰρ (for), διὰ (through) νόμου (the Law) νόμῳ (to the Law) ἀπέθανον (died), ἵνα (that) Θεῷ (to God) ζήσω (I might live).

⁵ περιτομῇ (circumcision) ὀκταήμερος (on the eighth day); ἐκ (of) γένους (the nation) Ἰσραήλ (of Israel), φυλῆς (of the tribe) Βενιαμίν (of Benjamin); Ἑβραῖος (a Hebrew) ἐξ (of) Ἑβραίων (Hebrews); κατὰ (according to) νόμον (the Law), Φαρισαῖος (a Pharisee); ⁶ κατὰ (according to) ζῆλος (zeal), διώκων (persecuting) τὴν (the) ἐκκλησίαν (church); κατὰ (according to) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness) τὴν (which is) ἐν (in) νόμῳ (the Law), γενόμενος (having become) ἄμεμπτος (faultless).

¹⁰ Ὅστις (Whoever) γὰρ (for) ὅλον (all) τὸν (the) νόμον (law) τηρήσῃ (shall keep), πταίσῃ (shall stumble) δὲ (but) ἐν (in) ἑνί (one point), γέγονεν (he has become) πάντων (of all) ἔνοχος (guilty). ¹¹ ὁ (The One) γὰρ (for) εἰπών (having said), “Μὴ (Not) μοιχεύσῃς (you shall commit adultery),” εἶπεν (said) καί (also), “Μὴ (Not) φονεύσῃς (you shall murder).” εἰ (If) δὲ (however) οὐ (not) μοιχεύεις (you do commit adultery), φονεύεις (do commit murder) δέ (however), γέγονας (you have become) παραβάτης (a transgressor) νόμου (of the law).

⁷ Εἰ (If) δὲ (now) ἡ (the) διακονία (ministry) τοῦ (-) θανάτου (of death), ἐν (in) γράμμασιν (letters) ἐντετυπωμένη (having been engraved) λίθοις (on stones), ἐγενήθη (was produced) ἐν (in) δόξῃ (glory), ὥστε (so as for) μὴ (not) δύνασθαι (to be able) ἀτενίσαι (to look intently) τοὺς (the) υἱοὺς (sons) Ἰσραὴλ (of Israel) εἰς (into) τὸ (the) πρόσωπον (face) Μωϋσέως (of Moses), διὰ (on account of) τὴν (the) δόξαν (glory) τοῦ (of the) προσώπου (face) αὐτοῦ (of him), τὴν (which) καταργουμένην (is fading),

¹² ὁ (-) δὲ (And) νόμος (the Law) οὐκ (not) ἔστιν (is) ἐκ (of) πίστεως (faith); ἀλλ’ (rather), “Ὁ (The one) ποιήσας (having done) αὐτὰ (these things) ζήσεται (will live) ἐν (by) αὐτοῖς (them).”

²² ἀποθέσθαι (Are to have put off) ὑμᾶς (you), κατὰ (concerning) τὴν (the) προτέραν (former) ἀναστροφὴν (way of life), τὸν (the) παλαιὸν (old) ἄνθρωπον (man), τὸν (which) φθειρόμενον (is being corrupted), κατὰ (according to) τὰς (its) ἐπιθυμίας (desires) τῆς (-) ἀπάτης (of deceit),

¹³ ἀλλὰ (But) παρακαλεῖτε (encourage) ἑαυτοὺς (other) καθ’ (each) ἑκάστην (every) ἡμέραν (day), ἄχρις (while) οὗ (-) τὸ (-) Σήμερον (today) καλεῖται (it is called), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) σκληρυνθῇ (may be hardened) τις (one) ἐξ (of) ὑμῶν (you) ἀπάτῃ (by the deceitfulness) τῆς (-) ἁμαρτίας (of sin).

²² Γίνεσθε (Be) δὲ (however) ποιηταὶ (doers) λόγου (of the word), καὶ (and) μὴ (not) ἀκροαταὶ (hearers) μόνον (only), παραλογιζόμενοι (deceiving) ἑαυτούς (yourselves),

²⁶ Εἴ (If) τις (anyone) δοκεῖ (seems) θρησκὸς (religious) εἶναι (to be), μὴ (not) χαλιναγωγῶν (bridling) γλῶσσαν (the tongue) αὐτοῦ* (of himself), ἀλλὰ (but) ἀπατῶν (deceiving) καρδίαν (the heart) αὐτοῦ* (of himself), τούτου (of this one) μάταιος (worthless is) ἡ (the) θρησκεία (religion).

³¹ Νόμον (Law) οὖν (then) καταργοῦμεν (do we nullify) διὰ (through) τῆς (-) πίστεως (faith)? μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)! ἀλλὰ (Instead), νόμον (law) ἱστάνομεν (we uphold).

¹⁴ Οἴδαμεν (We know) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) ὁ (the) νόμος (Law) πνευματικός (spiritual) ἐστιν (is); ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) σάρκινός (fleshly) εἰμι (am), πεπραμένος (having been sold) ὑπὸ (under) τὴν (-) ἁμαρτίαν (sin).

¹⁶ εἰ (If) δὲ (now) ὃ (that which) οὐ (not) θέλω (I do want), τοῦτο (this) ποιῶ (I do), σύμφημι (I consent) τῷ (to the) νόμῳ (law), ὅτι (that it is) καλός (good).

⁸ Οἴδαμεν (We know) δὲ (now) ὅτι (that) καλὸς (good is) ὁ (the) νόμος (law), ἐάν (if) τις (one) αὐτῷ (it) νομίμως (lawfully) χρῆται (uses),

⁸ ἀφορμὴν (An occasion) δὲ (however) λαβοῦσα (having taken) ἡ (-) ἁμαρτία (sin) διὰ (by) τῆς (the) ἐντολῆς (commandment), κατειργάσατο (it produced) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (me) πᾶσαν (all) ἐπιθυμίαν (covetousness); χωρὶς (apart from) γὰρ (for) νόμου (the Law), ἁμαρτία (sin) νεκρά (is dead). ⁹ Ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (however) ἔζων (was alive) χωρὶς (apart from) νόμου (law) ποτέ (once); ἐλθούσης (having come) δὲ (however) τῆς (the) ἐντολῆς (commandment), ἡ (the) ἁμαρτία (sin) ἀνέζησεν (revived); ἐγὼ (I) δὲ (then) ἀπέθανον (died). ¹⁰ καὶ (And) εὑρέθη (proved to be) μοι (me) ἡ (the) ἐντολὴ (commandment) ἡ (that was) εἰς (to) ζωὴν (life), αὕτη (this) εἰς (to) θάνατον (death). ¹¹ ἡ (The) γὰρ (for) ἁμαρτία (sin), ἀφορμὴν (an occasion) λαβοῦσα (having taken) διὰ (by) τῆς (the) ἐντολῆς (commandment), ἐξηπάτησέν (deceived) με (me), καὶ (and) δι’ (by) αὐτῆς (it) ἀπέκτεινεν (put me to death).

³ τὸ (-) γὰρ (For) ἀδύνατον (powerless being) τοῦ (the) νόμου (law), ἐν (in) ᾧ (that) ἠσθένει (it was weak) διὰ (through) τῆς (the) σαρκός (flesh), ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God), τὸν (-) ἑαυτοῦ (of Himself) Υἱὸν (Son) πέμψας (having sent), ἐν (in) ὁμοιώματι (likeness) σαρκὸς (of flesh) ἁμαρτίας (of sin), καὶ (and) περὶ (for) ἁμαρτίας (sin), κατέκρινεν (condemned) τὴν (-) ἁμαρτίαν (sin) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σαρκί (flesh),

²¹ Ὁ (The) οὖν (therefore) νόμος (Law) κατὰ (is contrary to) τῶν (the) ἐπαγγελιῶν (promises) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God)? μὴ (Never) γένοιτο (may it be)! εἰ (If) γὰρ (for) ἐδόθη (had been given) νόμος (a law) ὁ (-) δυνάμενος (being able) ζωοποιῆσαι (to impart life), ὄντως (indeed) ἐκ (from out of) νόμου (the Law) ἂν (-) ἦν (would have emerged) ἡ (-) δικαιοσύνη (righteousness);

¹³ Μηδεὶς (No one) πειραζόμενος (being tempted) λεγέτω (let say) ὅτι (-), “Ἀπὸ (By) Θεοῦ (God) πειράζομαι (I am being tempted).” ὁ (-) γὰρ (For) Θεὸς (God) ἀπείραστός (unable to be tempted) ἐστιν (is) κακῶν (by evils); πειράζει (tempts) δὲ (now) αὐτὸς (He Himself) οὐδένα (no one).

²⁵ μὴ (Nothing) ἔχοντος (having) δὲ (now) αὐτοῦ (he) ἀποδοῦναι (to pay), ἐκέλευσεν (commanded) αὐτὸν (him) ὁ (the) κύριος (master) πραθῆναι (to be sold), καὶ (and) τὴν (the) γυναῖκα (wife) καὶ (and) τὰ (the) τέκνα (children), καὶ (and) πάντα (all) ὅσα (as many as) ἔχει (he had), καὶ (and) ἀποδοθῆναι (payment to be made).

⁸ Ἰδὼν (Having seen) δὲ (now), Σίμων (Simon) Πέτρος (Peter) προσέπεσεν (fell at) τοῖς (the) γόνασιν (knees) Ἰησοῦ (of Jesus), λέγων (saying), “Ἔξελθε (Depart) ἀπ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (me), ὅτι (for) ἀνὴρ (a man) ἁμαρτωλός (sinful) εἰμι (am I), Κύριε (Lord).”

¹¹ ὁ (The) Φαρισαῖος (Pharisee), σταθεὶς (having stood), ταῦτα (thus) «πρὸς (toward) ἑαυτὸν» (himself) προσηύχετο (was praying), Ὁ (-) ‘Θεός (God), εὐχαριστῶ (I thank) σοι (You) ὅτι (that) οὐκ (not) εἰμὶ (I am) ὥσπερ (like) οἱ (the) λοιποὶ (rest) τῶν (of the) ἀνθρώπων (men) — ἅρπαγες (swindlers), ἄδικοι (unrighteous), μοιχοί (adulterers) — ἢ (or) καὶ (even) ὡς (like) οὗτος (this) ὁ (-) τελώνης (tax collector). ¹² νηστεύω (I fast) δὶς (twice) τοῦ (in the) σαββάτου (week); ἀποδεκατῶ (I tithe) πάντα (all things), ὅσα (as many as) κτῶμαι (I gain).’ ¹³ Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) τελώνης (the tax collector), μακρόθεν (afar off) ἑστὼς (standing), οὐκ (not) ἤθελεν (was willing) οὐδὲ (not even) τοὺς (the) ὀφθαλμοὺς (eyes) ἐπᾶραι (to lift up) εἰς (to) τὸν (-) οὐρανόν (heaven), ἀλλ’ (but) ἔτυπτεν (was striking) τὸ (the) στῆθος (breast) αὐτοῦ (of himself), λέγων (saying) Ὁ (-), ‘Θεός (God), ἱλάσθητί (be merciful) μοι (to me), τῷ (the) ἁμαρτωλῷ (sinner)!’ ¹⁴ λέγω (I say) ὑμῖν (to you), κατέβη (went down) οὗτος (this one) δεδικαιωμένος (justified) εἰς (to) τὸν (the) οἶκον (house) αὐτοῦ (of him), παρ’ (rather than) ἐκεῖνον (that). ὅτι (For) πᾶς (everyone) ὁ (-) ὑψῶν (exalting) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ταπεινωθήσεται (will be humbled); ὁ (the one) δὲ (however) ταπεινῶν (humbling) ἑαυτὸν (himself) ὑψωθήσεται (will be exalted).”

⁹ ἠγάπησας (You have loved) δικαιοσύνην (righteousness) καὶ (and) ἐμίσησας (have hated) ἀνομίαν (wickedness); διὰ (because of) τοῦτο (this), ἔχρισέν (has anointed) σε (You) ὁ (-) Θεός (God), ὁ (the) Θεός (God) σου (of You), ἔλαιον (with the oil) ἀγαλλιάσεως (of exultation), παρὰ (above) τοὺς (the) μετόχους (companions) σου (of You).”

² πολλὰ (In many ways) γὰρ (for) πταίομεν (we stumble) ἅπαντες (all). εἴ (If) τις (anyone) ἐν (in) λόγῳ (what he says) οὐ (not) πταίει (does stumble), οὗτος (this one is) τέλειος (a perfect) ἀνήρ (man), δυνατὸς (able) χαλιναγωγῆσαι (to bridle) καὶ (indeed) ὅλον (all) τὸ (the) σῶμα (body).

⁵ ἢ (Or) δοκεῖτε (think you) ὅτι (that) κενῶς (in vain) ἡ (the) γραφὴ (Scripture) λέγει (says), “Πρὸς (With) φθόνον (envy) ἐπιποθεῖ (yearns) τὸ (the) πνεῦμα (Spirit) ὃ (that) κατῴκισεν (He has made to dwell) ἐν (in) ἡμῖν (us)?” ⁶ μείζονα (Greater) δὲ (however) δίδωσιν (He gives) χάριν (grace). διὸ (Therefore) λέγει (it says): “Ὁ (-) Θεὸς (God) ὑπερηφάνοις (the proud) ἀντιτάσσεται (opposes), ταπεινοῖς (to the humble) δὲ (however) δίδωσιν (gives) χάριν (grace).”

²¹ ἔσωθεν (Within) γὰρ (for) ἐκ (from) τῆς (the) καρδίας (heart) τῶν (-) ἀνθρώπων (of men) οἱ (-) διαλογισμοὶ (thoughts) οἱ (-) κακοὶ (evil) ἐκπορεύονται (go forth), πορνεῖαι (sexual immorality), κλοπαί (thefts), φόνοι (murders), μοιχεῖαι (adulteries), ²² πλεονεξίαι (covetous desires), πονηρίαι (wickednesses), δόλος (deceit), ἀσέλγεια (sensuality), ὀφθαλμὸς (an eye) πονηρός (evil), βλασφημία (slander), ὑπερηφανία (pride), ἀφροσύνη (foolishness). ²³ πάντα (All) ταῦτα (these) τὰ (-) πονηρὰ (evils) ἔσωθεν (from within) ἐκπορεύεται (go forth), καὶ (and) κοινοῖ (they defile) τὸν (the) ἄνθρωπον (man).”

¹³ εἰ (If) οὖν (therefore) ὑμεῖς (you), πονηροὶ (evil) ὑπάρχοντες (being), οἴδατε (know) δόματα (gifts) ἀγαθὰ (good) διδόναι (to give) τοῖς (to the) τέκνοις (children) ὑμῶν (of you), πόσῳ (how much) μᾶλλον (more) ὁ (the) Πατὴρ (Father) ὁ (who is) ἐξ (in) οὐρανοῦ (heaven) δώσει (will give) Πνεῦμα (the Spirit) Ἅγιον (Holy) τοῖς (to those) αἰτοῦσιν (asking) αὐτόν (Him)!”

¹⁹ ἐλευθερίαν (freedom) αὐτοῖς (them) ἐπαγγελλόμενοι (promising), αὐτοὶ (themselves) δοῦλοι (slaves) ὑπάρχοντες (being) τῆς (-) φθορᾶς (of corruption). ᾧ (By what) γάρ (for) τις (anyone) ἥττηται (has been subdued), τούτῳ (by that) ‹καὶ› (also) δεδούλωται (he is enslaved).

³⁴ Λέγει (Says) αὐτοῖς (to them) ὁ (-) Ἰησοῦς (Jesus), “Ἐμὸν (My) βρῶμά (food) ἐστιν (is) ἵνα (that) ποιήσω* (I should do) τὸ (the) θέλημα (will) τοῦ (of the One) πέμψαντός (having sent) με (Me), καὶ (and) τελειώσω (should finish) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τὸ (the) ἔργον (work).

⁴ ἀλλ’ (but) ὁ (the) κρυπτὸς (hidden) τῆς (of the) καρδίας (heart) ἄνθρωπος (man), ἐν (in) τῷ (the) ἀφθάρτῳ (imperishable) τοῦ (of the) πραέως (gentle) καὶ (and) ἡσυχίου (quiet) πνεύματος (spirit), ὅ (which) ἐστιν (is) ἐνώπιον (before) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (God) πολυτελές (of great worth).

²¹ Εὑρίσκω (I find) ἄρα (so) τὸν (the) νόμον (principle), τῷ (that) θέλοντι (desiring) ἐμοὶ (me) ποιεῖν (to do) τὸ (-) καλὸν (good), ὅτι (that) ἐμοὶ (me) τὸ (-) κακὸν (evil) παράκειται (is present with).

Διὸ (Therefore) ἵνα (that) μὴ (not) ὑπεραίρωμαι (I should become conceited), ἐδόθη (was given) μοι (to me) σκόλοψ (a thorn) τῇ (in my) σαρκί (flesh), ἄγγελος (a messenger) Σατανᾶ (of Satan), ἵνα (that) με (me) κολαφίζῃ (he might buffet), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) ὑπεραίρωμαι (I should become conceited). ⁸ ὑπὲρ (For) τούτου (this), τρὶς (three times) τὸν (the) Κύριον (Lord) παρεκάλεσα (I begged), ἵνα (that) ἀποστῇ (it might depart) ἀπ’ (from) ἐμοῦ (me). ⁹ καὶ (And) εἴρηκέν (He said) μοι (to me), “Ἀρκεῖ (Suffices) σοι (you) ἡ (the) χάρις (grace) μου (of Me); ἡ (the) γὰρ (for) δύναμις (power) ἐν (in) ἀσθενείᾳ (weakness) τελεῖται (is perfected).” Ἥδιστα (Most gladly) οὖν (therefore) μᾶλλον (rather) καυχήσομαι (will I boast) ἐν (in) ταῖς (the) ἀσθενείαις (weaknesses) ‹μου› (of me), ἵνα (so that) ἐπισκηνώσῃ (may rest) ἐπ’ (upon) ἐμὲ (me) ἡ (the) δύναμις (power) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ).

¹¹ ἐν (in) ᾧ (whom) καὶ (also) περιετμήθητε (you were circumcised) περιτομῇ (with the circumcision) ἀχειροποιήτῳ (made without hands), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) ἀπεκδύσει (removal) τοῦ (of the) σώματος (body) τῆς (of the) σαρκός (flesh), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) περιτομῇ (circumcision) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ),

¹⁸ ῥύσεταί (Will deliver) με (me) ὁ (the) Κύριος (Lord) ἀπὸ (from) παντὸς (every) ἔργου (deed) πονηροῦ (evil) καὶ (and) σώσει (will bring me safely) εἰς (into) τὴν (the) βασιλείαν (kingdom) αὐτοῦ (of Him) τὴν (-) ἐπουράνιον (heavenly), ᾧ (to whom is) ἡ (the) δόξα (glory) εἰς (unto) τοὺς (the) αἰῶνας (ages) τῶν (of the) αἰώνων (ages). ἀμήν (Amen).

¹⁴ ὃς (who) ἔδωκεν (gave) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us), ἵνα (that) λυτρώσηται (He might redeem) ἡμᾶς (us) ἀπὸ (from) πάσης (all) ἀνομίας (lawlessness), καὶ (and) καθαρίσῃ (might purify) ἑαυτῷ (to Himself) λαὸν (a people) περιούσιον (specially chosen), ζηλωτὴν (zealous) καλῶν (of good) ἔργων (works). ¹⁵ καὶ (and) ἀπαλλάξῃ (might set free) τούτους (those) ὅσοι (who) φόβῳ (fear) θανάτου (of death) διὰ (through) παντὸς (all) τοῦ (their time) ζῆν (to live), ἔνοχοι (subject) ἦσαν (were) δουλείας (to slavery).

⁴ καὶ (And) ἐξαλείψει (He will wipe away) πᾶν (every) δάκρυον (tear) ἐκ (from) τῶν (the) ὀφθαλμῶν (eyes) αὐτῶν (of them), καὶ (and) ὁ (-) θάνατος (death) οὐκ (not) ἔσται (will be) ἔτι (any longer) οὔτε (nor) πένθος (mourning) οὔτε (nor) κραυγὴ (crying) οὔτε (nor) πόνος (pain); οὐκ (not) ἔσται (they will be) ἔτι (any longer), ὅτι (because) τὰ (the) πρῶτα (former things) ἀπῆλθαν (have passed away).”

²¹ τέξεται (She will bear) δὲ (then) υἱὸν (a son), καὶ (and) καλέσεις (you will call) τὸ (the) ὄνομα (name) αὐτοῦ (of Him) Ἰησοῦν (Jesus); αὐτὸς (He) γὰρ (for) σώσει (will save) τὸν (the) λαὸν (people) αὐτοῦ (of Him) ἀπὸ (from) τῶν (the) ἁμαρτιῶν (sins) αὐτῶν (of them).”

¹⁷ χάρις (Thanks be) δὲ (however) τῷ (-) Θεῷ (to God) ὅτι (that) ἦτε (you used to be) δοῦλοι (slaves) τῆς (-) ἁμαρτίας (of sin), ὑπηκούσατε (you have become obedient) δὲ (now) ἐκ (from the) καρδίας (heart), εἰς (to) ὃν (which) παρεδόθητε (you were handed over) τύπον (to the form) διδαχῆς (of teaching).

¹⁵ ὃ (What) γὰρ (for) κατεργάζομαι (I do), οὐ (not) γινώσκω (I understand); οὐ (not) γὰρ (for) ὃ (what) θέλω (I want), τοῦτο (this) πράσσω (I do); ἀλλ’ (but) ὃ (what) μισῶ (I hate), τοῦτο (this) ποιῶ (I do). ¹⁶ εἰ (If) δὲ (now) ὃ (that which) οὐ (not) θέλω (I do want), τοῦτο (this) ποιῶ (I do), σύμφημι (I consent) τῷ (to the) νόμῳ (law), ὅτι (that it is) καλός (good). ¹⁷ νυνὶ (In that case) δὲ (now), οὐκέτι (no longer) ἐγὼ (I) κατεργάζομαι (am doing) αὐτὸ (it), ἀλλὰ (but) ἡ (the) οἰκοῦσα* (dwelling) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (me) ἁμαρτία (sin). ¹⁸ Οἶδα (I know) γὰρ (for) ὅτι (that) οὐκ (nothing) οἰκεῖ (there dwells) ἐν (in) ἐμοί (me), τοῦτ’ (that) ἔστιν (is) ἐν (in) τῇ (the) σαρκί (flesh) μου (of me), ἀγαθόν (good); τὸ (-) γὰρ (for) θέλειν (to will) παράκειταί (is present with) μοι (me), τὸ (-) δὲ (but) κατεργάζεσθαι (to do) τὸ (the) καλὸν (good), οὔ (not). ¹⁹ οὐ (Not) γὰρ (for) ὃ (that) θέλω (I desire) ποιῶ (I do) ἀγαθόν (good), ἀλλὰ (but) ὃ (that) οὐ (not) θέλω (I do want) κακὸν (evil), τοῦτο (this) πράσσω (I practice). ²⁰ εἰ (If) δὲ (now) ὃ (what) οὐ (not) θέλω (I do want), ἐγὼ (I) τοῦτο (this) ποιῶ (do), οὐκέτι (it is no longer) ἐγὼ (I) κατεργάζομαι (who do) αὐτὸ (it), ἀλλὰ (but) ἡ (-) οἰκοῦσα (dwelling) ἐν (in) ἐμοὶ (me) ἁμαρτία (sin). ²¹ Εὑρίσκω (I find) ἄρα (so) τὸν (the) νόμον (principle), τῷ (that) θέλοντι (desiring) ἐμοὶ (me) ποιεῖν (to do) τὸ (-) καλὸν (good), ὅτι (that) ἐμοὶ (me) τὸ (-) κακὸν (evil) παράκειται (is present with).

⁵⁷ τῷ (to) δὲ (however) Θεῷ (God) χάρις (be thanks), τῷ (the One) διδόντι (giving) ἡμῖν (us) τὸ (the) νῖκος (victory) διὰ (through) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ).

¹⁷ ἡ (The) γὰρ (for) σὰρξ (flesh) ἐπιθυμεῖ (desires), κατὰ (against) τοῦ (the) Πνεύματος (Spirit), τὸ (-) δὲ (and) Πνεῦμα (the Spirit) κατὰ (against) τῆς (the) σαρκός (flesh); ταῦτα (these) γὰρ (for) ἀλλήλοις (to one another) ἀντίκειται (are opposed), ἵνα (in order) μὴ (not) ἃ (that) ἐὰν (if) θέλητε (you might wish) ταῦτα (those things) ποιῆτε (you should do). ¹⁸ εἰ (If) δὲ (however) Πνεύματι (the Spirit) ἄγεσθε (you are led by), οὐκ (not) ἐστὲ (you are) ὑπὸ (under) νόμον (the Law). ¹⁹ Φανερὰ (Evident) δέ (now) ἐστιν (are) τὰ (the) ἔργα (works) τῆς (of the) σαρκός (flesh), ἅτινά (which) ἐστιν (are) πορνεία (sexual immorality), ἀκαθαρσία (impurity), ἀσέλγεια (sensuality), ²⁰ εἰδωλολατρία (idolatry), φαρμακεία (sorcery), ἔχθραι (enmities), ἔρις (strife), ζῆλος (jealousy), θυμοί (outbursts of anger), ἐριθεῖαι (contentions), διχοστασίαι (dissensions), αἱρέσεις (factions), ²¹ φθόνοι (envyings), μέθαι (drunkennesses), κῶμοι (carousing), καὶ (and) τὰ (things) ὅμοια (like) τούτοις (these), ἃ (as to which) προλέγω (I forewarn) ὑμῖν (you), καθὼς (even as) προεῖπον (I warned before), ὅτι (that) οἱ (those) τὰ (such) τοιαῦτα (things) πράσσοντες (doing), βασιλείαν (kingdom) Θεοῦ (God’s) οὐ (not) κληρονομήσουσιν (will inherit). ²² Ὁ (-) δὲ (But) καρπὸς (the fruit) τοῦ (of the) Πνεύματός (Spirit) ἐστιν (is) ἀγάπη (love), χαρά (joy), εἰρήνη (peace), μακροθυμία (patience), χρηστότης (kindness), ἀγαθωσύνη (goodness), πίστις (faithfulness), ²³ πραΰτης (gentleness), ἐγκράτεια (self-control); κατὰ (against) τῶν (things) τοιούτων (such), οὐκ (no) ἔστιν (there is) νόμος (law). ²⁴ Οἱ (Those) δὲ (now) τοῦ (-) Χριστοῦ (of Christ) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus), τὴν (the) σάρκα (flesh) ἐσταύρωσαν (have crucified) σὺν (with) τοῖς (its) παθήμασιν (passions) καὶ (and) ταῖς (-) ἐπιθυμίαις (desires).

²⁰ εὐχαριστοῦντες (giving thanks) πάντοτε (at all times) ὑπὲρ (for) πάντων (all things) ἐν (in) ὀνόματι (the name) τοῦ (the) Κυρίου (Lord) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ) τῷ (to the) Θεῷ (God) καὶ (and) Πατρί (Father).

⁶ Μηδὲν (Nothing) μεριμνᾶτε (be anxious about), ἀλλ’ (but) ἐν (in) παντὶ (everything), τῇ (by) προσευχῇ (prayer) καὶ (and) τῇ (-) δεήσει (supplication), μετὰ (with) εὐχαριστίας (thanksgiving), τὰ (the) αἰτήματα (requests) ὑμῶν (of you) γνωριζέσθω (let be made known) πρὸς (to) τὸν (-) Θεόν (God).

⁵ καὶ (also) αὐτοὶ (you yourselves) ὡς (as) λίθοι (stones) ζῶντες (living), οἰκοδομεῖσθε (are being built up) οἶκος (as a house) πνευματικὸς (spiritual) εἰς (into) ἱεράτευμα (a priesthood) ἅγιον (holy), ἀνενέγκαι (to offer) πνευματικὰς (spiritual) θυσίας (sacrifices) εὐπροσδέκτους (acceptable) [τῷ] (-) Θεῷ (to God) διὰ (through) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ).
