So Jehoahaz son of Jehoram king of Judah reigned. ² Jehoahaz began to reign when he was twenty years old, and he reigned one year in Jerusalem; and his mother's name was Athaliah, the granddaughter of Omri. ³ And he walked in the way of the house of Ahab; for his mother was his counselor to do evil. ⁴ And he did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord as the house of Ahab had done; for they were his counselors after the death of his father, to his destruction. ⁵ And he walked in their counsels, and he went with Jehoram son of Ahab king of Israel to war against Hazael king of Syria to Ramoth Gilead. And the archers struck Joram. ⁶ And Joram returned to Jezreel to be healed of the wounds wherewith the Syrians smote him in Ramoth, when he fought against Hazael king of Syria. And Ahaziah son of Jehoram, king of Judah, went down to see Jehoram the son of Ahab at Jezreel because he was sick. ⁷ And destruction from God came upon Ahaziah in his coming to Jehoram; for when he had come, Jehoram went out with him against Jehu the son of Nimshi, the anointed of the Lord against the house of Ahab. ⁸ And it came to pass, when Jehu was taking vengeance on the house of Ahab, that he found the princes of Judah and the brethren of Ahaziah, ministering to Ahaziah, and he slew them. ⁹ And he gave orders to seek for Ahaziah. And they took him while he was healing his wounds in Samaria, and they brought him to Jehu, and he killed him. And they buried him, for they said, He is the son of Jehoshaphat, who sought the Lord with all his heart. So there was none in the house of Ahaziah to secure their power in the kingdom. ¹⁰ And Athaliah the mother of Ahaziah saw that her son was dead, and she arose and destroyed all the royal heirs in the house of Judah. ¹¹ But Jehoshabeath, the daughter of the king, took Joash the son of Ahaziah and rescued him secretly out of the midst of the sons of the king that were put to death, and she placed him and his nurse in a bedchamber. So Jehoshabeath daughter of King Jehoram, sister of Ahaziah, wife of Jehoida the priest, hid him, and she even hid him from Athaliah, and she did not slay him. ¹² And he was hidden with them in the house of God for six years; and Athaliah reigned over the land.

^{4 (6:5)} Now the giants were upon the earth in those days; and after that when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, they bore children to them, those were the giants of old, the men of renown. ^{5 (6:6)} And the Lord God, having seen that the wicked actions of men were multiplied upon the earth, and that everyone in his heart was intently brooding over evil continually,

¹² Perhaps my father may feel me, and I shall be before him as one ill-intentioned, and I shall bring upon me a curse, and not a blessing. ¹³ And his mother said to him, On me be your curse, my son; only listen to my voice, and go and bring them for me.

³ neither shall you contract marriages with them; you shall not give your daughter to his son, and you shall not take his daughter to your son. ⁴ For he will draw away your son from Me, and he will serve other gods; and the Lord will be very angry with you, and will soon utterly destroy you.

⁶ And if your brother by your father or mother, or your son, or daughter, or your wife in your bosom, or friend who is equal to your own soul, entreat you secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which neither you nor your fathers have known, ⁷ of the gods of the nations that are round about you, who are near you or at a distance from you, from one end of the earth to the other; ⁸ you shall not consent to him, neither shall you hearken to him; and your eye shall not spare him, you shall feel no regret for him, neither shall you at all protect him: ⁹ you shall surely report concerning him, and your hands shall be upon him among the first to slay him, and the hands of all the people at the last. ¹⁰ And they shall stone him with stones, and he shall die, because he sought to draw you away from the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

³⁵ In the day of vengeance I will recompense, whenever their foot shall be tripped up; for the day of their destruction is near to them, and the judgments at hand are close upon you.

⁴ And his father and his mother knew not that it was of the Lord, that He sought to be revenged on the Philistines. And at that time the Philistines lorded it over Israel.

⁴ But he returned the silver to his mother, and his mother took two hundred pieces of silver, and gave them to a silversmith, and he made it a graven and a molten image; and it was in the house of Micah. ⁵ And the house of Micah was to him the house of God, and he made an ephod and theraphin, and he consecrated one of his sons, and he became to him a priest.

¹³ He shall build for Me a house for My name, and I will set up his throne, even forever.

⁴ Nevertheless for David's sake the Lord gave him a remnant, that He might establish his children after him, and might establish Jerusalem.

Then the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, I will send forth your servants and my servants in the ship; but Jehoshaphat would not. And Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers, and is buried with his fathers in the City of David: and Joram his son reigned in his place.

And he said, To you, O captain. ⁶ And he arose, and went into the house, and he poured the oil upon his head, and said to him, Thus says the Lord God of Israel: I have anointed you to be king over the people of the Lord, even over Israel. ⁷ And you shall utterly destroy the house of Ahab your master from before Me, and shall avenge the blood of My servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of the Lord, at the hand of Jezebel,

¹⁵ And King Joram had returned to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds which the Syrians had given him, in his war with Hazael king of Syria. And Jehu said, If your heart is with me, let there not go forth out of the city one fugitive to go and report to Jezreel.

²¹ And Joram said, Make ready. And one made ready the chariot. And Joram the king of Israel went forth, and Ahaziah king of Judah, each in his chariot, and they went to meet Jehu, and found him on the property of Naboth the Jezreelite.

²⁷ But when Ahaziah king of Judah saw it, he fled by the way of Beth Haggan. And Jehu pursued after him, and said, Slay him also. So one shot him in the chariot at the Ascent of Gur, which is by Ibleam. And he fled to Megiddo, and died there. ²⁸ And his servants put him on a chariot, and brought him to Jerusalem, and they buried him in his tomb in the City of David.

³⁴ And Jehu went in and ate and drank, and said, Look after this cursed woman and bury her, for she is a king's daughter.

¹⁰ See now that there shall not fall to the ground anything of the word of the Lord, which the Lord spoke against the house of Ahab, for the Lord has performed all that He spoke of by the hand of His servant Elijah. ¹¹ So Jehu killed all that were left of the house of Ahab in Jezreel, and all his great men, and his acquaintances, and his priests, so as not to leave him any remnant. ¹² And he arose and went to Samaria, and he was in Beth Eked on the way. ¹³ And Jehu found the brethren of Ahaziah king of Judah, and said, Who are you? And they said, We are the brethren of Ahaziah, and we have come down to greet the sons of the king, and the sons of the queen. ¹⁴ And he said, Take them alive. And they killed them at Beth Eked, forty-two men: he left not a man of them.

³¹ And it came to pass, when the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat, that they said, It is the king of Israel. And they compassed him round about to fight against him. And Jehoshaphat cried out, and the Lord delivered him; and God turned them away from him.

² And Jehu the prophet, the son of Hanani went out to meet him, and said to him, King Jehoshaphat, do you help a sinner, or act friendly towards one hated of the Lord? Therefore has wrath come upon you from the Lord.

⁴ And Jehoram entered upon his kingdom, and strengthened himself, and killed all his brothers with the sword, and also others of the princes of Israel.

⁶ And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, as did the house of Ahab; for a daughter of Ahab was his wife; and he did that which was evil in the sight of the Lord. ⁷ Nevertheless the Lord would not utterly destroy the house of David, because of the covenant which He made with David, and as He said to him that He would give a light to him and his sons forever.

¹⁶ So the Lord stirred up the Philistines against Jehoram, and the Arabians, and those who bordered on the Ethiopians; ¹⁷ and they went up against Judah, and prevailed against them, and took away all the possessions which they found in the house of the king, and his sons, and his daughters; and there was no son left to him except Jehoahaz, the youngest of his sons.

³ And all the congregation of Judah made a covenant with the king in the house of God. And he showed them the king's son, and said to them, Lo, let the king's son reign, as the Lord said concerning the house of David.

¹⁷ And it came to pass after the death of Jehoiada, that the princes of Judah went in, and bowed down to the king. Then the king hearkened to them. ¹⁸ And they forsook the house of the Lord God of their fathers, and served wooden images and idols. And there was wrath upon Judah and Jerusalem in that day.

¹ Then all the people of the land took Uzziah, who was sixteen years old, and they made him king in the place of his father Amaziah.

²⁵ And the people of the land killed the men who had conspired against King Amon; and the people of the land made Josiah his son king in his place.

²³ And in those days I saw the Jews who had married women of Ashdod, of Ammon, and of Moab. ²⁴ And their children spoke half in the language of Ashdod, and did not know how to speak in the Jewish language. ²⁵ And I strove with them and cursed them; and I struck some of them, and plucked off their hair, and made them swear by God, saying, You shall not give your daughters to their sons, and you shall not take of their daughters to your sons. ²⁶ Did not Solomon king of Israel sin thus? Yet there was no king like him among many nations, and he was beloved of God, and God made him king over all Israel; yet strange women turned him aside. ²⁷ So we will not hearken to you to do all this evil, to break covenant with our God, to marry strange wives.

¹ Blessed is the man who has not walked in the counsel of the ungodly, and has not stood in the way of sinners, and has not sat in the seat of evil men.

¹⁶ The Lord is known as executing judgments: the sinner is taken in the works of his hands. Pause.

⁸ The ungodly walk around; according to Your greatness You have greatly exalted the sons of men.

⁵ For in the day of my afflictions He hid me in His tabernacle; He sheltered me in the secret of His tabernacle; He set me up on a rock.

¹⁰ The Lord frustrates the counsels of the nations; He brings to nought the reasonings of the people, and brings to nought the counsels of princes.

¹⁴ For I was plagued all the day, and my reproof was every morning.

¹⁸ Surely You have appointed judgments to them because of their crafty dealings; You have cast them down when they were lifted up. ¹⁹ How have they become desolate! Suddenly they have failed; they have perished because of their iniquity.

¹⁰ For the inward thought of man shall give thanks to You, and the memorial of his inward thought shall keep a feast to You.

¹⁰ My son, let not ungodly men lead you astray, neither shall you consent to them.

⁵ The thoughts of the righteous are true judgments, but ungodly men devise deceits.

²⁰ If you walk with wise men you shall be wise, but he that walks with fools shall be known.

²⁷ A son who ceases to attend to the instruction of a father will cherish evil designs.

³⁰ There is no wisdom, there is no courage, there is no counsel against the ungodly.

¹⁰ declaring beforehand the latter events before they come to pass, and they are accomplished together; and I said, all My counsel shall stand, and I will do all things that I have planned;

⁸ Thus says the Lord: As the new wine shall be found in the cluster, and they shall say, Destroy it not; for a blessing is in it; so will I do for the sake of him that serves Me, for his sake I will not destroy them all.

¹ Righteous are You, O Lord, that I may make my defense to You: yet I will speak to You of judgments. Why is it that the way of the ungodly prospers? And all that deal very treacherously are flourishing?

⁴⁵ And he said to me, This chamber that looks to the south, is for the priests that keep the charge of the house. ⁴⁶ And the chamber that looks to the north is for the priests that keep the charge of the altar; they are the sons of Zadok, those of the tribe of Levi who draw near to the Lord, to serve Him.

²² And you accordingly, his son, O Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart before God: do you not know all this?

⁹ Who is wise, and will understand these things? Or prudent, and will know them? For the ways of the Lord are straight, and the righteous shall walk in them; but the ungodly shall fall therein.

¹⁶ For you have kept the statues of Omri, and done all the works of the house of Ahab; and you have walked in their ways, that I might deliver you to utter destruction, and those that inhabit the city to hissing: and you shall bear the reproach of nations.

¹² Are You not from everlasting, O Lord God, my Holy One? And surely we shall not die. O Lord, You have established it for judgment, and He has formed me to chasten with His correction.

¹⁵ And did he not do well? And there was the residue of his spirit. But you said, What does God seek but a seed? But take heed to your own spirit, and forsake not the wife of your youth.

³ And you shall trample the wicked; for they shall be ashes underneath your feet in the day which I appoint, says the Lord Almighty.

³⁷ He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.

⁸ So she, being urged on by her mother, said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist." ⁹ And the king was grieved, but because of the oaths, and because of those who reclined to eat with him, he commanded it to be given. ¹⁰ And having sent, he beheaded John in the prison. ¹¹ And his head was brought on a platter and it was given to the girl, and she brought it to her mother.

¹⁹ But Peter and John answered them and said, "Whether it is right before God to hear you rather than God, you judge.

²⁸ to do all that Your hand and Your counsel foreordained to come to pass.
