⁹ For they ascend to Assyria, a wild ass, solitary; by himself is Ephraim. They dispense to lovers;"

¹⁹ Pul king of Asshur has come against the land, and Menahem gives to Pul a thousand talents of silver, for his hand being with him to strengthen the kingdom in his hand.

⁵ Who has sent forth the onager free, And who has unloosed the bonds of the wild donkey, ⁶ Whose home I have constituted the steppe, And the salty wastes as his habitat? ⁷ He makes sport of the clamor of the town; He does not hear the tumults of the taskmaster. ⁸ He explores the mountains as his pasture And seeks after every green thing.

⁶ The load of the beasts of the south rim; in a land of distress and aridity and constraint, the parent lion and the long maned lion are there, yet no water. The puff adder and the burning serpent are making flight. They are bearing on the shoulders of donkeys their estate, and on the humps of camels their treasures, to a people who are not benefiting them for help, but for shame and for reproach."

²⁴ A wild ass accustomed to a wilderness, In the desire of her soul she has swallowed up wind, Her meeting--who does turn her back? None seeking her do weary themselves, In her month they find her."

³³ To all whores they give a gift, And--you have given your gifts to all your lovers, And do bribe them to come in unto you, From round about--in your whoredoms." ³⁴ And the contrary is in you from women in your whoredoms, That after you none does go a-whoring; And in your giving a gift, And a gift has not been given to you; And you are become contrary."

⁵ And go a-whoring does Aholah under Me, And she dotes on her lovers, On the neighboring Assyrians, ⁶ Clothed with blue--governors and prefects, Desirable young men all of them, Horsemen, riding on horses, ⁷ And she gives her whoredoms on them, The choice of the sons of Asshur, All of them--even all on whom she doted, By all their idols she has been defiled." ⁸ And her whoredoms out of Egypt she has not forsaken, For with her they lay in her youth, And they dealt with the loves of her virginity, And they pour out their whoredoms on her." ⁹ Therefore I have given her into the hand of her lovers, Into the hand of sons of Asshur on whom she doted."

⁵ For their mother committed prostitution; she who was pregnant with them caused shame. For she had said, I am going after my lovers, who are giving me my bread and my water, my wool and my flax, my oil and my drinks." ⁶ Wherefore, behold Me hedging her way with briars, and I dike her with a stone dike, and she will not find her tracks." ⁷ And she pursues her lovers yet shall not overtake them, and she seeks them yet shall not find them. And she says, I will go and return to my first husband, for it was better for me then than now."

¹⁰ And now I will expose her decadence to the eyes of her lovers, and no man shall rescue her from My hand."

¹³ And Ephraim is seeing his illness, and Judah his malady; and Ephraim is going to Assyria, and he is sending messengers to king Jareb, yet he will not be able to heal you, nor will he cure you of your malady;"

¹¹ And Ephraim is becoming as an enticing, heartless dove. On Egypt they call; to Assyria they go."

¹ Ephraim is grazing on wind and is pursuing the east wind. The entire day he is increasing lying and futility, and they are contracting a covenant with Assyria, and oil is being fetched to Egypt."
