⁷ The principal thing is wisdom; acquire wisdom, And with all your acquisition, acquire understanding;"

¹⁶ Do not fear when a man is enriched, When the glory of his house is increased, ¹⁷ For, in his death, he cannot take anything along; His glory shall not descend after him." ¹⁸ For his soul, it was blessed in his lifetime, {And they acclaim you while you are doing well for yourself{" ¹⁹ Yet he shall come unto the generation of his fathers; Unto permanence, they shall not see light." ²⁰ The human, in his self-esteem, is not understanding; He is comparable to the beasts that are dumb."

¹⁰⁴ From Your precepts I gain understanding; Therefore I hate every false path.

¹⁶ To acquire wisdom, how much better than fine gold, And to acquire understanding, more to be chosen than silver!"

⁶ The contriving together of treasures by a false tongue Is a vanity whisked away for those seeking death.

²³ Buy the truth, and do not sell it, Wisdom and discipline and understanding."

⁴ I made great things as my works; I built houses for myself; I planted vineyards for myself; ⁵ I made gardens and parks for myself, And I planted in them trees of every fruit." ⁶ I made reservoirs of water for myself, To irrigate from them the sprouting grove of trees." ⁷ I acquired servants and maids, And any sons born in the house became mine; Moreover, abundant cattle, herds and flocks became mine, More than all who were before me in Jerusalem." ⁸ I collected also silver and gold for myself, The valuables of kings and provinces; I provided male singers and female singers for myself, And with the delicacies of the sons of humanity, a wine waiter and wine waitresses." ⁹ As I grew greater and added more than anyone who was before me in Jerusalem, Indeed my wisdom, it stayed by me."

⁸ There was one person, but there was no second; There even was no son or brother for him; Also there was no end to all his toil, Yet his eyes were not satisfied with his riches. Then he said, For whom am I toiling And making my soul lack good? This too is vanity, and it is an experience of evil."

¹² For in the shadow of wisdom it is as in the shadow of silver, And the advantage of knowledge is that wisdom keeps alive those possessing it."

¹⁶ So I said, Better is wisdom than mastery, Yet the wisdom of a provident man is despised, And his words are no longer hearkened to." ¹⁷ The words of wise men, hearkened to in rest, Are better than the outcry of a ruler among the stupid." ¹⁸ Wisdom is better than implements of attack, Yet one sinner destroys much good."

⁴⁴ Like is the kingdom of the heavens to a treasure hidden in the field, finding which, a man hides it, and, in his joy, is going away, and is selling all, whatever he has, and is buying that field." ⁴⁵ Again, like is the kingdom of the heavens to a man, a merchant, seeking ideal pearls." ⁴⁶ Now, finding one very precious pearl, he comes away, having disposed of all whatever he had, and buys it."

³⁶ For what is it benefiting a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? ³⁷ For what may a man give in exchange for his soul?

⁴² Yet of few is there need, or of one. For Mary chooses the good part which shall not be wrested from her."

²⁰ Yet God said to him, 'Imprudent one! In this night your soul are they demanding from you. Now, what you make ready, whose will it be?'"

⁸ But, to be sure, I am also deeming all to be a forfeit because of the superiority of the knowledge of Christ Jesus, my Lord, because of Whom I forfeited all, and am deeming it to be refuse, that I should be gaining Christ,
