¹ As he passed by, he saw a man blind from birth. ² And his disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" ³ Jesus answered, "Neither this man sinned nor his parents sinned. But that the works of God might be revealed in him, ⁴ we must work the works of him who sent me, while it is day. Night is coming, when no one can work. ⁵ As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world." ⁶ As he said this, he spat on the ground and made clay of the saliva, and anointed the man's eyes with the clay. ⁷ And he said to him, "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam" (which means, Sent). So he went and washed, and came back seeing. ⁸ The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar, said, "Is not this the man who used to sit and beg?" ⁹ Some said, "It is he." Others said, "No, but he is like him." He said, "I am the man." ¹⁰ They said to him, "Then how were your eyes opened?" ¹¹ He answered and said, "A man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and said to me, 'Go to the pool of Siloam and wash.' So I went and washed, and I received sight." ¹² They said to him, "Where is he?" He said, "I do not know." ¹³ They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. ¹⁴ Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes. ¹⁵ Then the Pharisees also asked him again how he had received his sight. He said to them, "He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and I see." ¹⁶ Some of the Pharisees said, "This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath." But others said, "How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?" And there was a division among them. ¹⁷ So they again said to the blind man, "What do you say about him, since he has opened your eyes?" He said, "He is a prophet." ¹⁸ The Jews did not believe that he had been blind, and had received his sight, until they called the parents of the man who had received his sight. ¹⁹ And they asked them, "Is this your son, who you say was born blind? How then does he now see?" ²⁰ His parents answered, "We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind; ²¹ but how he now sees we do not know, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself." ²² His parents said this because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had agreed already that if anyone confessed that he was Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue. ²³ Therefore his parents said, "He is of age; ask him." ²⁴ So for the second time they called the man who had been blind, and said to him, "Give God the glory; we know that this man is a sinner." ²⁵ He answered, "Whether he is a sinner or not, I do not know. One thing I know, that though I was blind, now I see." ²⁶ Then they said to him, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?" ²⁷ He answered them, "I have told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples, too?" ²⁸ Then they reviled him and said, "You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses. ²⁹ We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we do not know where he comes from." ³⁰ The man answered, "Why, this is a marvel! You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes. ³¹ We know that God does not listen to sinners, but if any one is a worshiper of God and does his will, he listens to him. ³² Never since the world began has it been heard that anyone opened the eyes of a man born blind. ³³ If this man were not from God, he could do nothing." ³⁴ They answered him, "You were born in utter sin, and are you teaching us?" And they cast him out. ³⁵ Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and when he found him, he said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?" ³⁶ He answered, "Who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?" ³⁷ Jesus said to him, "You have seen him, and it is he who speaks with you." ³⁸ Then he said, "Lord, I believe!" And he worshiped him. ³⁹ Jesus said, "For judgment I have come into this world, that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may become blind." ⁴⁰ Then some of the Pharisees who were with him heard this, and said to him, "Are we blind also?" ⁴¹ Jesus said to them, "If you were blind, you would have no guilt; but now that you say, 'We see,' your sin remains.

¹⁴ And they said, "Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets."

⁷ and greetings in the marketplaces, and to be called by men, 'Rabbi.'

² And Jesus answered them, "Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered this way?

³⁴ They answered him, "You were born in utter sin, and are you teaching us?" And they cast him out.

⁴ When the natives saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one another, "No doubt this man is a murderer. Though he has escaped from the sea, justice has not allowed him to live."

⁵ the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them.

² And Jesus answered them, "Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered this way? ³ I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish. ⁴ Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them, do you think that they were worse sinners than all the others who dwelt in Jerusalem? ⁵ I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish."

⁴ When Jesus heard it, he said, "This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it."

⁴⁰ Jesus said to her, "Did I not tell you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?"

¹¹ Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father in me; or else believe me for the sake of the works themselves. ¹² Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I go to the Father. ¹³ And whatever you ask in my name, I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

²¹ And when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding no way to punish them, because of the people; for all the people were praising God for what had happened.

³² And he said to them, "Go and tell that fox, 'Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day I finish my course.' ³³ Nevertheless I must journey today and tomorrow, and the day following; for it cannot be that a prophet should perish outside of Jerusalem. ³⁴ O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were not willing!

³⁴ Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of him who sent me, and to finish his work.

¹⁹ Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of himself, but only what he sees the Father doing; for whatever he does, the Son also does.

³⁶ But the testimony which I have is greater than that of John; for the works which the Father has given me to finish, these very works which I am doing, bear witness of me, that the Father has sent me.

³² Jesus answered them, "I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone me?"

³⁷ If I do not do the works of my father, do not believe me;

⁹ Jesus answered, "Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. ¹⁰ But if one walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not in him."

³⁵ Then Jesus said to them, "A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest the darkness overtake you; he who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.

⁴ I have glorified you on the earth, having finished the work which you have given me to do.

²⁰ for we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard."

¹⁰ So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.

¹⁶ making the most of your time, because the days are evil.

⁵ Conduct yourselves with wisdom toward outsiders, making the most of the opportunity.

¹⁶ the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and on those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned."

³² a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel."

⁴ In him was life, and the life was the light of men. ⁵ The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. ⁶ There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. ⁷ He came for a witness, to bear witness of the light, that all might believe through him. ⁸ He was not the light, but came to bear witness of the light. ⁹ The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world.

¹⁹ And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. ²⁰ For every one who does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. ²¹ But he who does the truth comes to the light, that it may be clearly seen that his deeds have been done in God."

¹² Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

³⁵ Then Jesus said to them, "A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest the darkness overtake you; he who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. ³⁶ While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light." When Jesus had said this, he departed and hid himself from them.

⁴⁶ I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in me should not remain in darkness.

⁴⁷ For so the Lord has commanded us: 'I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.'"

¹⁸ to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.'

²³ that the Christ must suffer, and that, by being the first to rise from the dead, he would proclaim light both to the people and to the Gentiles."

¹⁴ For this reason it is said, "Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you."

²³ And the city has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and its lamp is the Lamb.

³³ And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spat and touched his tongue.

²³ So he took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village. And when he had spit on his eyes and put his hands on him, he asked him "Do you see anything?"

¹⁸ Therefore I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments to clothe you, and to keep the shame of your nakedness from being seen; and salve to anoint your eyes, that you may see.

⁴ Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them, do you think that they were worse sinners than all the others who dwelt in Jerusalem?

¹¹ He answered and said, "A man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and said to me, 'Go to the pool of Siloam and wash.' So I went and washed, and I received sight."

³⁹ Jesus said, "For judgment I have come into this world, that those who do not see may see, and that those who see may become blind."

³⁶ do you say of him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, 'You are blaspheming,' because I said, 'I am the Son of God'?

³⁷ But some of them said, "Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?"

³ For what the law could not do, in that it was weakened through the flesh, God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin: he condemned sin in the flesh,

⁴ But when the time had fully come, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,

⁴⁶ And they came to Jericho. And as he was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a great multitude, Bartimaeus, a blind man, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside begging.

²⁰ And a certain beggar named Lazarus was laid at his gate, full of sores, ²¹ longing to be fed with what fell from the rich man's table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores. ²² So the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried.

³⁵ As he drew near to Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging.

² And a man lame from birth was being carried, whom they set down every day at the gate of the temple which is called Beautiful to beg alms of those who entered the temple. ³ When he saw Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked for alms. ⁴ And Peter, along with John, directed his gaze at him, and said, "Look at us." ⁵ And he gave them his attention, expecting to receive something from them. ⁶ But Peter said, "I do not have silver and gold, but I give you what I have; in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk." ⁷ And taking him by the right hand, he raised him up; and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong. ⁸ With a leap he stood upright and began to walk; and he entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God. ⁹ And all the people saw him walking and praising God, ¹⁰ and they recognized him as the one who used to sit at the Beautiful Gate of the temple to beg alms, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him. ¹¹ While he clung to Peter and John, all the people ran together to them in the porch called Solomon's, astounded.

²⁷ and should sleep by night and rise by day, and the seed should sprout and grow, he himself does not know how.

⁹ Nicodemus said to him, "How can this be?"

¹⁵ Then the Pharisees also asked him again how he had received his sight. He said to them, "He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and I see."

²¹ but how he now sees we do not know, nor do we know who opened his eyes. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself."

²⁶ Then they said to him, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?"

³⁵ But someone will ask, "How are the dead raised? With what kind of body do they come?"

⁶ As he said this, he spat on the ground and made clay of the saliva, and anointed the man's eyes with the clay. ⁷ And he said to him, "Go, wash in the pool of Siloam" (which means, Sent). So he went and washed, and came back seeing.

²⁷ He answered them, "I have told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples, too?"

¹¹ But he answered them, "The man who made me well said to me, 'Take up your bed, and walk.'" ¹² They asked him, "Who is the man who said to you, 'Take up your bed, and walk'?" ¹³ Now the man who had been healed did not know who it was, for Jesus had withdrawn, as there was a crowd in that place.

¹¹ The Jews were looking for him at the feast, and saying, "Where is he?"

³ Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought to him a woman caught in adultery. And when they had set her in the midst, ⁴ they said to him, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. ⁵ Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such. What do you say?" ⁶ They said this to test him, that they might have something of which to accuse him. But Jesus bent down and wrote on the ground with his finger. ⁷ And when they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, "Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her." ⁸ And again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.

⁴⁶ But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done. ⁴⁷ Then the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, "What are we to do? For this man performs many signs.

⁵⁷ Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it, so that they might arrest him.

¹⁹ The Pharisees then said to one another, "You see that you are accomplishing nothing. Look, The world has gone after him!"

⁴² Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue;

¹ At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. And his disciples were hungry, and began to pluck heads of grain and to eat. ² But when the Pharisees saw it, they said to him, "Look, your disciples are doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath." ³ He said to them, "Have you not read what David did, when he was hungry, and those who were with him: ⁴ how he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread which was not lawful for him to eat, nor for those who were with him, but only for the priests? ⁵ Or have you not read in the Law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, and are innocent? ⁶ I tell you that one greater than the temple is here. ⁷ And if you had known what this means, 'I desire mercy, and not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned the guiltless. ⁸ For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath." ⁹ And he went on from there, and went into their synagogue. ¹⁰ And behold, there was a man with a withered hand. And they asked him, "Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath?" so that they might accuse him. ¹¹ He said to them, "What man of you, if he has one sheep and it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not lay hold of it and lift it out? ¹² Of how much more value is a man than a sheep! Therefore it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath." ¹³ Then he said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." And he stretched it out, and it was restored as whole as the other. ¹⁴ But the Pharisees went out and plotted against him, how they might destroy him.

²³ One Sabbath he was going through the grainfields; and as they made their way his disciples began to pluck heads of grain.

¹ One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grain fields, and his disciples plucked and ate some heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands. ² But some of the Pharisees said, "Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?" ³ Jesus answered them, "Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: ⁴ how he entered the house of God, took and ate the consecrated bread, and also gave some to those with him, which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat?" ⁵ And he said to them, "The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath." ⁶ On another Sabbath he entered the synagogue and taught, and a man was there whose right hand was withered. ⁷ The scribes and the Pharisees watched him closely, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, so that they might find an accusation against him. ⁸ But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man who had the withered hand, "Rise and stand here." And he rose and stood there. ⁹ Then Jesus said to them, "I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?" ¹⁰ And he looked around at them all, and said to the man, "Stretch out your hand." He did so, and his hand was restored. ¹¹ But they were filled with fury and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.

¹⁰ Now he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. ¹¹ And there was a woman who had had a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years; she was bent over and could not straighten up at all. ¹² When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, "Woman, you are freed from your infirmity." ¹³ And he laid his hands on her, and immediately she was made straight, and praised God. ¹⁴ But the ruler of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, said to the people, "There are six days on which work ought to be done; come on those days and be healed, and not on the Sabbath day." ¹⁵ Then the Lord answered him, "You hypocrites! Does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the stall, and lead it away to water it? ¹⁶ Then ought not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound for eighteen years, be loosed on the Sabbath day from this bond?" ¹⁷ When he said this, all his adversaries were put to shame; and all the people rejoiced at all the glorious things that were done by him.

¹ One Sabbath, when he went to dine at the house of a ruler who belonged to the Pharisees, they watched him.

⁹ And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked. Now that day was the Sabbath.

¹⁶ For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath.

²¹ Jesus answered them, "I did one deed, and you all marvel. ²² Moses therefore gave you circumcision (not that it is from Moses, but from the fathers), and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath. ²³ If on the Sabbath a man receives circumcision, so that the law of Moses may not be broken, are you angry with me because on the Sabbath I made a man's whole body well?

¹⁰ They said to him, "Then how were your eyes opened?" ¹¹ He answered and said, "A man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and said to me, 'Go to the pool of Siloam and wash.' So I went and washed, and I received sight."

²⁶ Then they said to him, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?" ²⁷ He answered them, "I have told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples, too?"

² This man came to Jesus by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him."

⁵² Then the Jews began to argue among themselves, saying, "How can this man give us his flesh to eat?"

¹² And there was much complaining among the people about him. Some said, "He is a good man"; others said, "No, on the contrary, he deceives the people."

⁴³ So there was a division among the people because of him.

²⁴ So for the second time they called the man who had been blind, and said to him, "Give God the glory; we know that this man is a sinner."

³⁰ The man answered, "Why, this is a marvel! ¹⁹ There was again a division among the Jews because of these words.

¹¹ Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father in me; or else believe me for the sake of the works themselves.

²⁴ If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would not have sin; but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father.

⁴ But the people of the city were divided; some sided with the Jews, and some with the apostles.

¹¹ So the crowds said, "This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee."

¹⁹ And he said to them, "What things?" And they said to him, "The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people,

¹⁹ The woman said to him, "Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet.

¹⁴ When the people saw the sign that Jesus did, they said, "Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world."

²² "Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know

²² Moses said, 'The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brethren; you shall listen to everything he tells you. ²³ And it shall be that every soul that does not listen to that prophet will be destroyed from among the people.' ²⁴ And likewise, all the prophets who have spoken, from Samuel and those who came afterwards, also announced these days. ²⁵ You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant which God made with your fathers, saying to Abraham, 'And in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed.' ²⁶ For you first, God raised up his servant and sent him to bless you by turning every one of you from your wicked ways."

³⁸ how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.

³¹ He said to him, 'If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced if some one should rise from the dead.'"

¹⁹ Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?"

⁴⁴ How can you believe, who receive glory from one another, and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?

²² His parents said this because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had agreed already that if anyone confessed that he was Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue.

³⁷ Though he had done so many signs before them, yet they did not believe in him; ³⁸ that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke: "Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?" ³⁹ Therefore they could not believe, because Isaiah said again: ⁴⁰ "He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, lest they should see with their eyes, and understand with their hearts and turn, so that I should heal them."

¹⁵ while it is said, "Today, if you will hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion." ¹⁶ Who were they who heard and rebelled? Were they not all those Moses led out of Egypt? ¹⁷ And with whom was he angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? ¹⁸ And to whom did he swear that they would never enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient? ¹⁹ So we see that they were not able to enter because of unbelief.

¹¹ Therefore let us be diligent to enter that rest, so that no one will fall by following the same example of disobedience.

⁸ The neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar, said, "Is not this the man who used to sit and beg?" ⁹ Some said, "It is he." Others said, "No, but he is like him." He said, "I am the man."

¹⁰ and they recognized him as the one who used to sit at the Beautiful Gate of the temple to beg alms, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

¹⁴ And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to say in reply.

²² Blessed are you when men hate you, and when they exclude you and revile you, and cast out your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.

⁴ "I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. ⁵ But I will show you whom you should fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has power to cast into hell; yes, I tell you, fear him! ⁶ Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. ⁷ Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows. ⁸ "I tell you, whoever acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man will also acknowledge him before the angels of God. ⁹ But he who denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God.

⁵⁶ And a servant girl, seeing him as he sat in the firelight, looked at him, and said, "This man also was with him." ⁵⁷ But he denied it, saying, "Woman, I do not know him." ⁵⁸ And a little later some one else saw him and said, "You also are of them." But Peter said, "Man, I am not!" ⁵⁹ Then after about an hour had passed, another insisted, saying, "Certainly this fellow also was with him, for he is a Galilean." ⁶⁰ But Peter said, "Man, I do not know what you are saying!" Immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. ⁶¹ And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said to him, "Before the rooster crows today, you will deny me three times."

¹³ However, no one spoke openly of him for fear of the Jews.

⁴⁵ The officers then went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, "Why did you not bring him?" ⁴⁶ The officers answered, "No man ever spoke like this man!" ⁴⁷ The Pharisees answered them, "Are you deceived, you also? ⁴⁸ Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him? ⁴⁹ But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed." ⁵⁰ Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus before, and who was one of them, said to them, ⁵¹ "Does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he is doing?" ⁵² They replied, "Are you from Galilee, too? Search and look, and you will find that no prophet is to rise out of Galilee."

⁴² Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; ⁴³ for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.

² They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God.

³⁸ After this Josnt of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took away his body.

¹⁹ On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, "Peace be with you."

¹⁸ Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus.

¹³ None of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high honor.

⁴⁰ So they took his advice, and they called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.

¹¹ But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned. ¹² For before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he began to draw back and separate himself, fearing the party of the circumcision. ¹³ The rest of the Jews joined him in hypocrisy, with the result that even Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy.

⁸ But as for the cowardly, the unbelieving, the immoral, as for murderers, fornicators, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their lot will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death."

²⁷ And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left.

³⁹ Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw it, he said to himself, "If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner."

² And the Pharisees and the scribes murmured, saying, "This man receives sinners and eats with them."

⁷ And when they saw it they all murmured, "He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner."

²³ that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.

⁴⁶ Which of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me?

⁴⁹ Jesus answered, "I do not have a demon; but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me.

¹⁶ Some of the Pharisees said, "This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath." But others said, "How can a man who is a sinner do such signs?" And there was a division among them.

³⁰ I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has nothing in me.

³⁰ They answered him, "If he were not an evildoer, we would not have handed him over to you."

⁶ When the chief priests and officers saw him, they cried out, "Crucify him, crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "You take him and crucify him, for I find no fault in him."

² For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but it is not according to knowledge. ³ For, being ignorant of the righteousness that comes from God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness. ⁴ For Christ is the end of the law, that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.

²¹ For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

¹¹ But he answered them, "The man who made me well said to me, 'Take up your bed, and walk.'"

³⁰ The man answered, "Why, this is a marvel! You do not know where he comes from, and yet he opened my eyes.

¹⁰ He who believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. He who does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given of his Son.

⁶⁷ "If you are the Christ, tell us." But he said to them, "If I tell you, you will not believe.

¹⁰ They said to him, "Then how were your eyes opened?" ¹¹ He answered and said, "A man called Jesus made clay and anointed my eyes and said to me, 'Go to the pool of Siloam and wash.' So I went and washed, and I received sight." ¹² They said to him, "Where is he?" He said, "I do not know." ¹³ They brought to the Pharisees the man who had formerly been blind. ¹⁴ Now it was a Sabbath day when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes. ¹⁵ Then the Pharisees also asked him again how he had received his sight. He said to them, "He put clay on my eyes, and I washed, and I see."

¹¹ Blessed are you when they revile you and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for my sake.

³⁹ And those who passed by hurled insults at him, wagging their heads

⁴⁵ Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; it is Moses who accuses you, on whom you set your hope. ⁴⁶ If you believed Moses, you would believe me, for he wrote about me. ⁴⁷ But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe my words?"

¹⁹ Did not Moses give you the law? Yet none of you keeps the law. Why do you seek to kill me?"

¹¹ Then they secretly induced men to say, "We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and against God." ¹² They stirred up the people and the elders and the scribes, and they came on him and seized him, and brought him before the council. ¹³ They put forward false witnesses who said, "This man never stops speaking against this holy place, and the law; ¹⁴ for we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place, and will change the customs which Moses handed down to us."

¹⁷ But if you call yourself a Jew, and rely on the law and boast of your relation to God

¹² and we toil, working with our own hands. When we are reviled, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure;

¹⁰ nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

²³ when he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he uttered no threats, but he trusted himself to him who judges justly.

²⁴ But when the Pharisees heard this they said, "It is only by Beelzebub, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons."

⁶¹ and said, "This fellow said, 'I am able to destroy the temple of God, and to build it in three days.'"

² And they began to accuse him, saying, "We found this man perverting our nation and forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ, a king."

¹⁷ For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

²⁷ But we know where this man is from; when the Christ comes, no one will know where he is from."

⁴¹ Others said, "This is the Christ." But some said, "Will the Christ come from Galilee? ⁴² Has not the scripture said that the Christ comes from David, and from Bethlehem, the town where David was?"

¹⁴ Jesus answered, "Even if I bear witness of myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from and where I am going.

³⁵ This Moses whom they rejected, saying, 'Who made you a ruler and a judge?' is the one God sent to be both a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.

²² Up to this word they listened to him, and then they raised their voices and said, "Away with such a fellow from the earth! For he ought not to live."

²² To this day I have had the help that comes from God, and so I stand here testifying both to small and great, saying nothing but what the prophets and Moses said would happen:

² He was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God's house. ³ Yet Jesus has been counted worthy of as much more glory than Moses as the builder of a house has more honor than the house. ⁴ For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God. ⁵ Now Moses was faithful in all God's house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later,

⁶ And he marveled because of their unbelief. Then he went around the villages teaching.

²² He answered them, "Go and tell John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have the good news preached to them.

¹⁰ Jesus answered him, "Are you the teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things?

³⁷ Though he had done so many signs before them, yet they did not believe in him;

⁶ For it is the God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

¹⁷ If anyone is willing to do his will, he shall know whether the teaching is from God or whether I speak on my own authority.

⁴¹ So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, "Father, I thank you that you have heard me. ⁴² I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing by, that they may believe that you sent me."

¹⁶ You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may give you.

⁷ Then I said, 'Behold, I have come to do your will, O God,' as it is written of me in the roll of the book."

¹⁵ and the prayer offered in faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. ¹⁶ Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. ¹⁷ Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the earth for three years and six months. ¹⁸ Then he prayed again, and the heavens gave rain and the earth produced its fruit.

²¹ Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God; ²² and we receive from him whatever we ask, because we keep his commandments and do what pleases him.

⁷⁰ as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets from of old,

¹⁸ And there were flashes of lightning and voices and peals of thunder; and there was a great earthquake, such as there had not been since man came to be on the earth, so great an earthquake was it, and so mighty.

³⁸ So in the present case I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or action is of men, it will fail; ³⁹ but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them; or else you may even be found fighting against God."

¹⁷ If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. ¹⁸ "Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.

⁴⁵ One of the lawyers answered him, "Teacher, by saying these things you reproach us also."

¹¹ For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

¹⁰ "Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. ¹¹ The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank you that I am not like other menextortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. ¹² I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.' ¹³ But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!' ¹⁴ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

¹⁷ Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will not enter it."

³⁷ All that the Father gives me will come to me, and the one who comes to me I will by no means cast out.

⁴⁸ Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed in him? ⁴⁹ But this crowd that does not know the law is accursed."

⁴¹ You do the deeds of your father." They said to him, "We were not born of fornication; we have one Father God."

² And his disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?"

³⁵ Jesus heard that they had cast him out, and when he found him, he said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?"

⁴⁰ Then some of the Pharisees who were with him heard this, and said to him, "Are we blind also?"

⁴ In the name of our Lord Jesus, when you are assembled, and I with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present, ⁵ you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

¹³ God judges those outside. "Expel the wicked man from among you."

¹⁵ "We ourselves, who are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners,

³ Among them we all once lived in the lusts of our flesh, following the desires of flesh and mind, and so we were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.

⁵ Likewise you that are younger men be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for "God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble."

⁹ I wrote something to the church; but Diotrephes, who loves to be first among them, does not accept what we say.

¹⁷ so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name.

³³ Then those who were in the boat worshipped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God."

¹⁶ Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

¹ The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

¹⁸ No one has ever seen God; God the only Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has made him known.

³⁴ And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God."

⁴⁹ Nathanael answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!" ⁵⁰ Jesus answered him, "Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You shall see greater things than these."

¹⁵ that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. ¹⁶ For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. ¹⁷ For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved. ¹⁸ He who believes in him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

³⁶ He who believes in the Son has eternal life; he who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him."

¹⁴ Afterward, Jesus found him in the temple, and said to him, "See, you are well. Sin no more, so that nothing worse may happen to you."

⁶⁹ And we believe, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God."

²⁷ She said to him, "Yes, Lord, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is to come into the world."

²⁸ Thomas answered him, "My Lord and my God!"

³¹ but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in his name.

³⁶ And as they went along the road they came to some water; and the eunuch said, "Look, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?"

²⁰ And immediately he began to proclaim Jesus in the synagogues, saying, "He is the Son of God."

⁴ and declared to be the Son of God with power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord.

²⁰ But Isaiah is very bold and says, "I was found by those who did not seek me; I have shown myself to those who did not ask for me."

² but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the world. ³ He is the radiance of his glory and the exact representation of his being, and upholds all things by the word of his power. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, ⁴ having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs. ⁵ For to which of the angels did God ever say, "You are my son, today I have begotten you"? And again, "I will be a father to him and he shall be a son to me"? ⁶ And again, when God brings the first-born into the world, he says, "Let all God's angels worship him." ⁷ Of the angels he says, "Who makes his angels winds, and his servants flames of fire." ⁸ But of the Son he says, "Your throne, O God, is for ever and ever, and the righteous scepter is the scepter of your kingdom. ⁹ You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness above your companions."

¹⁵ Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God.

⁵ Who is it that overcomes the world but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

¹³ I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.

²⁰ And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.

³ and said to him, "Are you the One who is to come, or shall we look for another?"

³⁸ Jesus turned, and saw them following, and said to them, "What do you seek?" They said to him, "Rabbi" (which means Teacher), "where are you staying?"

¹⁴ How then can they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how can they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without a preacher?

²⁵ At that time Jesus declared, "I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to babes.

¹¹ And he answered them, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. ¹² For whoever has, to him will more be given, and he will have abundance; but whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him.

²⁶ Jesus said to her, "I who speak to you am he."

²¹ He who has my commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him." ²² Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, "Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?" ²³ Jesus answered him, "If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.

³¹ and he said, 'Cornelius, your prayer has been heard and your alms have been remembered before God. ³² Send therefore to Joppa and ask for Simon who is called Peter; he is lodging in the house of Simon, a tanner, by the sea.' ³³ So I sent for you immediately, and you have been kind enough to come. Now therefore we are all here present in the sight of God, to hear all that you have been commanded by the Lord."

⁹ And behold, Jesus met them and said, "Hail!" And they came to him and took hold of his feet and worshipped him.

¹⁷ When they saw him, they worshipped him; but some doubted.

⁵² Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy,

⁹ And they sang a new song, saying, "Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals; for you were slain, and with your blood purchased men for God from every tribe and tongue and people and nation. ¹⁰ You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to our God, and they will reign on the earth." ¹¹ Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne and the living creatures and the elders, numbering myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, ¹² saying with a loud voice, "Worthy is the Lamb who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing!" ¹³ And I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying, "To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!" ¹⁴ And the four living creatures said, "Amen!" And the elders fell down and worshipped.

²³ But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

¹³ This is why I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. ¹⁴ In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah which says: 'Hearing you will hear and shall not understand; and seeing you will see and not perceive. ¹⁵ For this people's heart has grown dull. And their ears are hard of hearing, and their eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and they understand with their hearts, and turn so that I should heal them.'

⁷⁹ to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace."

³⁴ Then Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary his mother, "Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that will be spoken against

¹⁸ "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed,

²¹ At that very hour he cured many of diseases and afflictions and evil spirits, and to many that were blind he gave sight.

³⁴ Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eye is good, your whole body also is full of light. But when it is bad, your body also is full of darkness. ³⁵ Therefore be careful that the light in you is not darkness.

³⁰ And behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last."

¹⁷ For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through him might be saved.

¹⁹ And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

²² For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, ²³ that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. ²⁴ Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears my word and believes him who sent me, has eternal life; and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. ²⁵ Truly, truly, I say to you, the hour is coming, and now is, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God; and those who hear will live. ²⁶ For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself, ²⁷ and has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man.

¹⁵ You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one.

²⁵ He answered, "Whether he is a sinner or not, I do not know. One thing I know, that though I was blind, now I see."

³⁶ He answered, "Who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?" ³⁷ Jesus said to him, "You have seen him, and it is he who speaks with you." ³⁸ Then he said, "Lord, I believe!" And he worshiped him.

⁴⁰ "He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, lest they should see with their eyes, and understand with their hearts and turn, so that I should heal them." ⁴¹ Isaiah said this because he saw his glory and spoke of him.

⁷ What then? Israel did not obtain what it sought. The elect obtained it, but the rest were hardened, ⁸ as it is written: "God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that they should not see and ears that they should not hear, down to this very day." ⁹ And David says: "Let their table become a snare and a trap, a stumbling block and a retribution for them. ¹⁰ Let their eyes be darkened so that they cannot see, and bend their backs forever."

¹⁶ to the one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life. And who is sufficient for these things?

⁴ In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. ⁵ For we do not preach ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake. ⁶ For it is the God who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

¹⁰ and with all the deception of wickedness for those who are to perish, because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.

⁹ But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

¹¹ But he who hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

¹² Then the disciples came and said to him, "Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this saying?" ¹³ He answered, "Every plant which my heavenly Father has not planted will be rooted up. ¹⁴ Let them alone; they are blind guides. And if a blind man leads a blind man, both will fall into a pit."

¹⁶ "Woe to you, blind guides, who say, 'If any one swears by the temple, it is nothing; but if any one swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.' ¹⁷ You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that has made the gold sacred? ¹⁸ And you say, 'If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gift that is on it, he is bound by his oath.' ¹⁹ You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred? ²⁰ Therefore, he who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it. ²¹ And he who swears by the temple, swears by it and by him who dwells in it. ²² And he who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by him who sits on it. ²³ "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the Law, justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. ²⁴ You blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel! ²⁵ "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full of extortion and self-indulgence. ²⁶ Blind Pharisee! First cleanse the inside of the cup and dish, that the outside of them may be clean also. ²⁷ Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which outwardly appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness. ²⁸ Even so you also outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

³⁹ But the Lord said to him, "Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. ⁴⁰ You foolish ones! Did not he who made the outside make the inside also? ⁴¹ But give for alms those things which are within; and behold, everything is clean for you. ⁴² But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and neglect justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. ⁴³ Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the best seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. ⁴⁴ Woe to you! For you are like graves which are not seen, and men walk over them without knowing it." ⁴⁵ One of the lawyers answered him, "Teacher, by saying these things you reproach us also." ⁴⁶ And he said, "Woe to you also, lawyers! For you load men with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers. ⁴⁷ Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. ⁴⁸ So you witness that you approve of the deeds of your fathers; for they killed them, and you build their tombs. ⁴⁹ Therefore the wisdom of God also said, 'I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute,' ⁵⁰ that the blood of all the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation, ⁵¹ from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who perished between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it shall be required of this generation. ⁵² Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge. You did not enter in yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering." ⁵³ As he went away from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard, and to provoke him to speak of many things, ⁵⁴ lying in wait for him, to catch at something he might say.

¹⁹ and if you are sure that you are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, ²⁰ an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of infants, having in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth ²¹ you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal? ²² You who say that one must not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?

¹⁷ You say, "I am rich; I have become wealthy, and have need of nothing"and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked,

⁴⁷ And that servant who knew his master's will, and did not ready himself or do according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.

¹⁴ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

²² If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. ²³ He who hates me hates my Father also. ²⁴ If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would not have sin; but now they have seen and hated both me and my Father.

²⁶ For if we sin deliberately after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,

⁸ If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. ⁹ If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. ¹⁰ If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
