1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
2 As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: "Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way";
3 "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord; make his paths straight.'"
4 John came baptizing in the wilderness, and preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
5 And all the land of Judea, and the people from Jerusalem, went out to him and they were all baptized by him in the Jordan River, confessing their sins.
6 Now John was clothed with camel's hair, and with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.
7 And he preached, saying, "After me comes One who is mightier than I, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.
8 I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."
9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.
10 And immediately coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened and the Spirit descending upon him like a dove.
11 And a voice came from heaven, "You are my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."
12 The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness.
13 And he was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts, and the angels ministered to him.
14 Now after John was put in prison, Jesus came to Galilee, preaching the gospel of God,
15 and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent, and believe in the gospel."
16 And as he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the Sea; for they were fishermen.
17 And Jesus said to them, "Come follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men."
18 And immediately they left their nets and followed him.
19 When he had gone a little farther from there, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the boat mending their nets.
20 And immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and followed him.
21 And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath he entered the synagogue and taught.
22 And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.
23 Now there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit. And he cried out,
24 saying, "Let us alone! What have we to do with you, Jesus of Nazareth? Did you come to destroy us? I know who you arethe Holy One of God!"
25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet, and come out of him!"
26 And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying with a loud voice, came out of him.
27 And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, "What is this? A new teaching! With authority he commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him."
28 And at once his fame spread everywhere throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.
29 As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John, and entered the house of Simon and Andrew.
30 Now Simon's mother-in-law lay sick with a fever, and immediately they told him about her.
31 So he came and took her by the hand and lifted her up, and immediately the fever left her. And she served them.
32 Now at evening, when the sun had set, they brought to him all who were sick and those who were demon-possessed.
33 And the whole city was gathered together at the door.
34 And he healed many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him.
35 Now in the morning, a long while before daylight, he rose and went out to a solitary place, and there he prayed.
36 And Simon and those who were with him searched for him,
37 and when they found him, they said to him, "Everyone is looking for you."
38 And he said to them, "Let us go on to the next towns, so I may preach there also; for that is why I have come."
39 And he went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons.
40 Then a leper came to him, imploring him, kneeling down to him and saying to him, "If you are willing, you can make me clean."
41 And Jesus, moved with compassion, put out his hand and touched him, and said to him, "I am willing; be clean."
42 And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean.
43 And he strictly warned him and sent him away at once,
44 and he said to him, "See that you say nothing to anyone; but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, as a testimony to them."
45 But he went out and began to talk freely about it, and to spread the news, so that Jesus could no longer openly enter a town, but was outside in the deserted places; and people came to him from every quarter.

20 Immediately they left their nets and followed him.
21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets. And he called them,

2 And he saw two boats by the lake; but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets.
3 Then he got into one of the boats, which was Simon's, and asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat.
4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into the deep, and let down your nets for a catch."
5 And Simon answered, "Master, we toiled all night and caught nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets."
6 And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their nets were breaking.
7 So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink.
8 When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!"
9 For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish which they had taken;
10 and so also were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid. From now on you will catch men."

34 "Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you arethe Holy One of God!"
35 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be quiet, and come out of him!" And when the demon had thrown him down in the midst, he came out of him without doing him any harm.
36 And they were all amazed and said to one another, "What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!"

15 After the reading of the law and the prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent to them, saying, "Brethren, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, say it."
16 Paul stood up, and motioning with his hand said, "Men of Israel, and you who fear God, listen:
17 the God of this people Israel chose our fathers and made the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt, and with uplifted arm he led them out of it.
18 For about forty years he put up with them in the wilderness.
19 When he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, he gave them their land as an inheritance, for about four hundred and fifty years.
20 After these things he gave them judges until Samuel the prophet.
21 Then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years.
22 And after he had removed him, he raised up David to be their king; concerning whom he testified and said, 'I have found in David the son of Jesse a man after my heart, who will do all my will.'
23 From this man's descendants God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus, as he promised.
24 Before his coming John had preached a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.
25 And as John was completing his course, he said, 'What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. No, but after me one is coming, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.'
26 "Brethren, sons of the family of Abraham, and those among you that fear God, to us has been sent the message of this salvation.
27 For those who live in Jerusalem and their rulers, because they did not recognize him nor the utterances of the prophets which are read every Sabbath, fulfilled these by condemning him.
28 Though they found no ground for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed.
29 When they had carried out all that was written about him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a tomb.
30 But God raised him from the dead;
31 and for many days he appeared to those who came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are now his witnesses to the people.
32 And we preach to you the good news that what God promised to the fathers,
33 he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus. As it is also written in the second Psalm: 'You are my Son; today I have begotten you.'
34 As for the fact that he raised him from the dead, no more to return to decay, he spoke in this way: 'I will give you the holy and sure blessings of David.'
35 Therefore he also says in another Psalm, 'You will not let your Holy One see decay.'
36 For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep, and was laid with his fathers and saw decay;
37 but he whom God raised did not see decay.
38 Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through him forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you,
39 and through him everyone who believes is freed from everything from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses.
40 Therefore take care, so that what is said in the prophets may not come upon you:
41 'Behold, you scoffers, and wonder, and perish; for I am going to do a deed in your days, a deed you will never believe, if someone declares it to you.'"
42 As Paul and Barnabas were going out, the people begged that these things might be spoken to them the next Sabbath.
43 When the meeting of the synagogue broke up, many Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who spoke to them and urged them to continue in the grace of God.
44 The next Sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord.
45 But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy, and contradicted what was spoken by Paul, and blasphemed.
46 Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, "It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first. Since you reject it and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles.
47 For so the Lord has commanded us: 'I have made you a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the ends of the earth.'"
48 When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and glorified the word of the Lord; and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed.
49 And the word of the Lord spread through the whole region.
50 But the Jews incited the devout women of high standing and the leading men of the city, and stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove them out of their district.
51 So they shook off the dust from their feet in protest against them and went to Iconium.

16 "Woe to you, blind guides, who say, 'If any one swears by the temple, it is nothing; but if any one swears by the gold of the temple, he is bound by his oath.'
17 You blind fools! For which is greater, the gold or the temple that has made the gold sacred?
18 And you say, 'If anyone swears by the altar, it means nothing; but if anyone swears by the gift that is on it, he is bound by his oath.'
19 You blind men! For which is greater, the gift or the altar that makes the gift sacred?
20 Therefore, he who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it.
21 And he who swears by the temple, swears by it and by him who dwells in it.
22 And he who swears by heaven, swears by the throne of God and by him who sits on it.

4 When they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash themselves. And there are many other traditions which they observe, the washing of cups and pitchers and copper vessels.)
5 The Pharisees and the scribes asked him, "Why do your disciples not live according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with impure hands?"
6 And he said to them, "Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites; as it is written: 'This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.
7 In vain they worship me, teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.'
8 You let go of the commandment of God, and hold on to the tradition of men."
9 And he said to them, "You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God, in order to keep your tradition!
10 For Moses said, 'Honor your father and your mother'; and, 'He who curses father or mother, let him be put to death.'
11 But you say that if a man says to his father or mother, 'Whatever help you might otherwise have received from me is Corban' (that is, a gift devoted to God),
12 then you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother,
13 thus making void the word of God through your tradition which you have handed down. And many such things you do."
