¹ {To the chief Musician: an instruction. Of David; when Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul, and said unto him, David came to the house of Ahimelech.} Why boastest thou thyself in evil, thou mighty man? The loving-kindness of ?God [abideth] continually.

⁴ In those days were the giants on the earth, and also afterwards, when the sons of God had come in to the daughters of men, and they had borne [children] to them; these were the heroes, who of old were men of renown. ⁵ And Jehovah saw that the wickedness of Man was great on the earth, and every imagination of the thoughts of his heart only evil continually.

⁸ And Cush begot Nimrod: he began to be mighty on the earth. ⁹ He was a mighty hunter before Jehovah; therefore it is said, As Nimrod, the mighty hunter before Jehovah!

⁹ As to all manner of fraud, -- as to ox, as to ass, as to sheep, as to clothing, as to everything lost, of which [a man] saith, It is this -- the cause of both parties shall come before the judges: he whom the judges shall condemn shall restore double to his neighbour.

⁷ (Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before Jehovah; and his name was Doeg, the Edomite, chief of the shepherds that [belonged] to Saul.)

⁹ Then answered Doeg the Edomite, who was set over the servants of Saul, and said, I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob, to Ahimelech the son of Ahitub. ¹⁰ And he inquired of Jehovah for him, and gave him victuals, and gave him the sword of Goliath the Philistine. ¹¹ Then the king sent to call Ahimelech the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father`s house, the priests that were in Nob; and they came all of them to the king. <sup>12</sup> And Saul said, Hear now, son of Ahitub. And he answered, Here I am, my lord. <sup>13</sup> And Saul said to him, Why have ye conspired against me, thou and the son of Jesse, in that thou hast given him bread, and a sword, and hast inquired of God for him, that he should rise against me as a lier-in-wait, as at this day? <sup>14</sup> And Ahimelech answered the king and said, And who is so faithful among all thy servants as David, who is the king`s son-in-law, and has access to thy secret council, and is honourable in thy house? ¹⁵ Was it to-day that I began to inquire of God for him? be it far from me: let not the king charge anything to his servant, [nor] to all the house of my father; for thy servant knew nothing of all this, less or more. ¹⁶ And the king said, Thou shalt certainly die, Ahimelech, thou, and all thy father`s house. ¹⁷ And the king said to the couriers that stood about him, Turn and put the priests of Jehovah to death; because their hand also is with David, and because they knew when he fled, and did not inform me. But the servants of the king were not willing to put forth their hand to fall on the priests of Jehovah. ¹⁸ And the king said to Doeg, Turn thou, and fall on the priests. And Doeg the Edomite turned, and fell on the priests, and put to death that day eighty-five persons who wore the linen ephod. ¹⁹ And Nob, the city of the priests, he smote with the edge of the sword, both men and women, infants and sucklings, and oxen, and asses, and sheep, with the edge of the sword.

¹⁴ Behold, he travaileth with iniquity, yea, he hath conceived mischief, and brought forth falsehood:

² The wicked, in his pride, doth hotly pursue the afflicted. They shall be taken in the devices that they have imagined. ³ For the wicked boasteth of his soul`s desire, and he blesseth the covetous; he contemneth Jehovah.

⁷ His mouth is full of cursing, and deceit, and oppression; under his tongue is mischief and iniquity.

³ The words of his mouth are wickedness and deceit: he hath left off to be wise, to do good. ⁴ He deviseth wickedness up on his bed; he setteth himself in a way that is not good: he abhorreth not evil. ⁵ Jehovah, thy loving-kindness is in the heavens, and thy faithfulness [reacheth] unto the clouds. ⁶ Thy righteousness is like the high mountains; thy judgments are a great deep: thou, Jehovah, preservest man and beast.

³ For strangers are risen up against me, and the violent seek after my life: they have not set God before them. Selah.

⁷ Behold, they belch out with their mouth; swords are in their lips: for who [say they] doth hear?

⁴ [How long] shall they utter [and] speak insolence -- all the workers of iniquity boast themselves?

¹⁷ But the loving-kindness of Jehovah is from everlasting and to everlasting, upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children`s children,

¹ Give ye thanks unto Jehovah; for he is good; for his loving-kindness [endureth] for ever.

¹ By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down; yea, we wept when we remembered Zion. ² We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof.

¹⁴ deceits are in his heart; he deviseth mischief at all times, he soweth discords.

¹⁸ a heart that deviseth wicked imaginations; feet that are swift in running to mischief;

⁴ none calleth for justice, none pleadeth in truthfulness. They trust in vanity, and speak falsehood; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity.

⁸ Their tongue is a murderous arrow; it speaketh deceit. [A man] speaketh peaceably to his neighbour with his mouth, but in his heart he layeth his ambush.

³ Both hands are for evil, to do it well. The prince asketh, and the judge [is there] for a reward; and the great [man] uttereth his soul`s greed: and [together] they combine it.

³⁰ back-biters, hateful to God, insolent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

² for men shall be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, evil speakers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, profane,

⁷ Beloved, let us love one another; because love is of God, and every one that loves has been begotten of God, and knows God. ⁸ He that loves not has not known God; for God is love.
