¹ After these things, God tempted Abraham, and said to him: Abraham, Abraham. And he answered: Here I am.

⁷ Isaac said to his father: My father. And he answered: What wilt thou, son? Behold, saith he, fire and wood: where is the victim for the holocaust?

¹¹ And behold, an angel of the Lord from heaven called to him, saying: Abraham, Abraham. And he answered: Here I am.

⁴ And when the Lord saw that he went forward to see, he called to him out of the midst of the bush. and said: Moses, Moses. And he answered: Here I am.

²⁵ But he cried to the Lord, and he shewed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, they were turned into sweetness. There he appointed him ordinances, and judgments, and there he proved him, ²⁶ Saying: If thou wilt hear the voice of the Lord thy God, and do what is right before him, and obey his commandments, and keep all his precepts, none of the evils that I laid upon Egypt, will I bring upon thee: for I am the Lord thy healer.

⁴ And the Lord said to Moses: Behold I will rain bread from heaven for you; let the people go forth, and gather what is sufficient for every day: that I may prove them whether they will walk in my law, or not.

² And thou shalt remember all the way through which the Lord thy God hath brought thee for forty years through the desert, to afflict thee and to prove thee, and that the things that were known in thy heart might be made known, whether thou wouldst keep his commandments or no.

¹⁶ And fed thee in the wilderness with manna which thy fathers knew not. And after he had afflicted and proved thee, at the last he had mercy on thee,

³ Thou shalt not hear the words of that prophet or dreamer: for the Lord your God trieth you, that it may appear whether you love him with all your heart, and with all your soul, or not.

²² That through them I may try Israel, whether they will keep the way of the Lord, and walk in it, as their fathers kept it, or not.

¹ And the anger of the Lord was again kindled against Israel, and stirred up David among them, saying: Go, number Israel and Juda.

³¹ But yet in the embassy of the princes of Babylon, that were sent to him, to inquire of the wonder that had happened upon the earth, God left him that he might be tempted, and all things might be made known that were in his heart.

³ As silver is tried by fire, and gold in the furnace: so the Lord trieth the hearts.

⁸ And I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: Whom shall I send? and who shall go for us? And I said: Lo, here am I, send me.

¹³ Let no temptation take hold on you, but such as is human. And God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that which you are able: but will make also with temptation issue, that you may be able to bear it.

¹⁷ By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,

¹² Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for, when he hath been proved, he shall receive the crown of life which God hath promised to them that love him. ¹³ Let no man, when he is tempted, say that he is tempted by God. For God is not a tempter of evils: and he tempteth no man. ¹⁴ But every man is tempted by his own concupiscence, being drawn away and allured.

²¹ Was not Abraham our father justified by works, offering up Isaac his son upon the altar?

⁷ That the trial of your faith (much more precious than gold which is tried by the fire) may be found unto praise and glory and honour at the appearing of Jesus Christ.
