¹¹ To what purpose do you offer me the multitude of your victims, saith the Lord? I am full, I desire not holocausts of rams, and fat of fatlings, and blood of calves, and lambs, and buck goats.

²² And Samuel said: Doth the Lord desire holocausts and victims, and not rather that the voice of the Lord should be obeyed? For obedience is better than sacrifices: and to hearken rather than to offer the fat or rams.

⁸ I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices: and thy burnt offerings are always in my sight.

All these things have they chosen in their ways, and their soul is delighted in their abominations.

²⁰ To what purpose do you bring me frankincense from Saba, and the sweet smelling cane from a far country? your holocausts are not acceptable, nor are your sacrifices pleasing to me.

²¹ Thus saith the Lord of hosts the God of Israel: Add your burnt offerings to your sacrifices, and eat ye the flesh.

²¹ I hate, and have rejected your festivities: and I will not receive the odour of your assemblies.

⁷ May the Lord be appeased with thousands of rams, or with many thousands of fat he goats? shall I give my firstborn for my wickedness, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

¹⁰ Who is there among you, that will shut the doors, and will kindle the fire on my altar gratis? I have no pleasure in you, saith the Lord of hosts: and I will not receive a gift of your hand.

¹³ Go then and learn what this meaneth, I will have mercy and not sacrifice. For I am not come to call the just, but sinners.
