⁴ And Satan answered, and said: Skin for skin; and all that a man hath, he will give for his life:

³ Then she answered: If I have found favour in thy sight, O king, and if it please thee, give me my life for which I ask, and my people for which I request. ⁴ For we are given up, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain, and to perish. And would God we were sold for bondmen and bondwomen: the evil might be borne with, and I would have mourned in silence: but now we have an enemy, whose cruelty redoundeth upon the king.

²⁰ In that day a man shall cast away his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which he had made for himself to adore, moles and bats. ²¹ And he shall go into the clefts of rocks, and into the holes of stones from the face of the fear of the Lord, and from the glory of his majesty, when he shall rise up to strike the earth.

⁸ But ten men were found among them, that said to Ismahel: Kill us not: for we have stores in the field, of wheat, and barley, and oil, and honey. And he forbore, and slew them not with their brethren.

²⁵ Therefore I say to you, be not solicitous for your life, what you shall eat, nor for your body, what you shall put on. Is not the life more than the meat: and the body more than the raiment?

²⁶ For what doth it profit a man, if he gain the whole world and suffer the loss of his own soul? Or what exchange shall a man give for his soul?

¹⁸ And we, being mightily tossed with the tempest, the next day they lightened the ship. ¹⁹ And the third day they cast out with their own hands the tacking of the ship.

⁸ Furthermore, I count all things to be but loss for the excellent knowledge of Jesus Christ, my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things and count them but as dung, that I may gain Christ. ⁹ And may be found in him, not having my justice, which is of the law, but that which is of the faith of Christ Jesus, which is of God: justice in faith. ¹⁰ That I may know him and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of his sufferings: being made conformable to his death,
