¹ Now when Mardochai had heard these things, he rent his garments, and put on sackcloth, strewing ashes on his head and he cried with a loud voice in the street in the midst of the city, shewing the anguish of his mind. ² And he came lamenting in this manner even to the gate of the palace: for no one clothed with sackcloth might enter the king's court. ³ And in all provinces, towns, and places, to which the king's cruel edict was come, there was great mourning among the Jews, with fasting, wailing, and weeping, many using sackcloth and ashes for their bed.

⁸ And he took a potsherd and scraped the corrupt matter, sitting on a dunghill.

³¹ Yet thou shalt plunge me in filth, and my garments shall abhor me.

¹⁹ I am compared to dirt, and am likened to embers and ashes.

⁵ Is this such a fast as I have chosen: for a man to afflict his soul for a day? is this it, to wind his head about like a circle, and to spread sackcloth and ashes? wilt thou call this a fast, and a day acceptable to the Lord?

¹⁹ For after thou didst convert me, I did penance: and after thou didst shew unto me, I struck my thigh: I am confounded and ashamed, because I have borne the reproach of my youth.

⁶³ That thou mayest remember, and be confounded, and mayest no more open thy mouth because of thy confusion, when I shall be pacified toward thee for all that thou hast done, saith the Lord God.

⁴³ And there you shall remember your ways, and all your wicked doings with which you have been defiled; and you shall be displeased with yourselves in your own sight, for all your wicked deeds which you committed.

³¹ And you shall remember your wicked ways, and your doings that were not good: and your iniquities, and your wicked deeds shall displease you.

³ And I set my face to the Lord, my God, to pray and make supplication with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes.

⁶ And the word came to the king of Ninive: and he rose up out of his throne, and cast away his robe from him, and was clothed in sackcloth, and sat in ashes. ⁷ And he caused it to be proclaimed and published in Ninive, from the mouth of the king and of his princes, saying: Let neither men nor beasts, oxen, nor sheep taste anything: let them not feed, nor drink water. ⁸ And let men and beasts be covered with sackcloth, and cry to the Lord with all their strength, and let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the iniquity that is in their hands. ⁹ Who can tell if God will turn, and forgive: and will turn away from his fierce anger, and we shall not perish? ¹⁰ And God saw their works, that they were turned from their evil way: and God had mercy with regard to the evil which he had said that he would do to them, and he did it not.

²¹ Woe thee, Corozain, woe to thee, Bethsaida: for if in Tyre and Sidon had been wrought the miracles that have been wrought in you, they had long ago done penance in sackcloth and ashes.

¹³ Woe to thee, Corozain! Woe to thee, Bethsaida! For if in Tyre and Sidon had been wrought the mighty works that have been wrought in you, they would have done penance long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes.

¹⁸ I will arise and will go to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and before thee. ¹⁹ I am not worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.

⁸ And last of all, he was seen also by me, as by one born out of due tine. ⁹ For I am the least of the apostles, who am not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.

¹³ Who before was a blasphemer and a persecutor and contumelious. But I obtained the mercy of God, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. ¹⁴ Now the grace of our Lord hath abounded exceedingly with faith and love, which is in Christ Jesus. ¹⁵ A faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the chief. ¹⁶ But for this cause have I obtained mercy: that in me first Christ Jesus might shew forth all patience, for the information of them that shall believe in him unto life everlasting.

⁷ Be subject therefore to God. But resist the devil: and he will fly from you. ⁸ Draw nigh to God: and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners, and purify your hearts, ye double minded. ⁹ Be afflicted and mourn and weep: let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy into sorrow. ¹⁰ Be humbled in the sight of the Lord: and he will exalt you.
