¹ These are the nations which the Lord left, that by them he might instruct Israel, and all that had not known the wars of the Chanaanites:

²² He will consume these nations in thy sight by little and little and by degrees. Thou wilt not be able to destroy them altogether: lest perhaps the beasts of the earth should increase upon thee.

² And thou shalt remember all the way through which the Lord thy God hath brought thee for forty years through the desert, to afflict thee and to prove thee, and that the things that were known in thy heart might be made known, whether thou wouldst keep his commandments or no.

¹⁶ And fed thee in the wilderness with manna which thy fathers knew not. And after he had afflicted and proved thee, at the last he had mercy on thee,

¹⁰ And all that generation was gathered to their fathers: and there arose others that knew not the Lord and the works which he had done for Israel.

²¹ I also will not destroy the nations which Josue left when he died: ²² That through them I may try Israel, whether they will keep the way of the Lord, and walk in it, as their fathers kept it, or not.

³¹ But yet in the embassy of the princes of Babylon, that were sent to him, to inquire of the wonder that had happened upon the earth, God left him that he might be tempted, and all things might be made known that were in his heart.

¹⁰ But he knoweth my way, and has tried me as gold that passeth through the fire:

³ As silver is tried by fire, and gold in the furnace: so the Lord trieth the hearts.

²⁷ I have set thee for a strong trier among my people: and thou shalt know, and prove their way.

⁹ The heart is perverse above all things, and unsearchable, who can know it? ¹⁰ I am the Lord who search the heart, and prove the reins: who give to every one according to his way, and according to the fruit of his devices.

⁹ And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined: and I will try them as gold is tried. They shall call on my name, and I will hear them. I will say: Thou art my people: and they shall say: The Lord is my God.

²⁴ But Jesus did not trust himself unto them: for that he knew all men,

⁷ That the trial of your faith (much more precious than gold which is tried by the fire) may be found unto praise and glory and honour at the appearing of Jesus Christ.

¹² Dearly beloved, think not strange the burning heat which is to try you: as if some new thing happened to you.

²³ And I will kill her children with death: and all the churches shall know that I am he that searcheth the reins and hearts. And I will give to every one of you according to your works. But to you I say
