⁵⁴ Sade. Waters have flowed over my head: I said: I am cut off.

¹¹ My days have passed away, my thoughts are dissipated, tormenting my heart. ¹² They have turned night into day, and after darkness I hope for light again. ¹³ If I wait hell is my house, and I have made my bed in darkness. ¹⁴ I have said to rottenness: Thou art my father; to worms, my mother and my sister. ¹⁵ Where is now then my expectation, and who considereth my patience? ¹⁶ All that I have shall go down into the deepest pit: thinkest thou that there at least I shall have rest?

^{4 (18:5)} The sorrows of death surrounded me: and the torrents of iniquity troubled me.

^{22 (31:23)} But I said in the excess of my mind: I am cast away from before thy eyes. Therefore thou hast heard the voice of my prayer, when I cried to thee.

⁴ Perhaps the waters had swallowed us up. ⁵ Our soul hath passed through a torrent: perhaps our soul had passed through a water insupportable.

¹⁰ I said: In the midst of my days I shall go to the gates of hell: I sought for the residue of my years. Hell... Sheol, or Hades, the region of the dead. ¹¹ I said: I shall not see the Lord God in the land of the living. I shall behold man no more, nor the inhabitant of rest. ¹² My generation is at an end, and it is rolled away from me, as a shepherd's tent. My life is cut off, as by a weaver: whilst I was yet but beginning, he cut me off: from morning even to night thou wilt make an end of me. ¹³ I hoped till morning, as a lion so hath he broken all my bones: from morning even to night thou wilt make an end of me.

¹⁸ Vau. And I said: My end and my hope is perished from the Lord.

¹¹ And he said to me: Son of man: All these bones are the house of Israel: they say: Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost, and we are cut off.

^{3 (2:4)} And thou hast cast me forth into the deep, in the heart of the sea, and a flood hast compassed me: all thy billows, and thy waves have passed over me. ^{4 (2:5)} And I said: I am cast away out of the sight of thy eyes: but yet I shall see the holy temple again. ^{5 (2:6)} The waters compassed me about even to the soul: the deep hath closed me round about, the sea hath covered my head.

⁸ For we would not have you ignorant, brethren, of our tribulation which came to us in Asia: that we were pressed out of measure above our strength, so that we were weary even of life. ⁹ But we had in ourselves the answer of death, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God who raiseth the dead. ¹⁰ Who hath delivered and doth deliver us out of so great dangers: in whom we trust that he will yet also deliver us,
