¹¹ Therefore he brought upon them the captains of he army of the king of the Assyrians: and they took Manasses, and carried him bound with chains and fetters to Babylon. ¹² And after that he was in distress he prayed to the Lord his God: and did penance exceedingly before the God of his fathers.

³ The sorrows of death have compassed me: and the perils of hell have found me. I met with trouble and sorrow: ⁴ And I called upon the name of the Lord. O Lord, deliver my soul.

¹ A gradual canticle. Out of the depths I have cried to thee, O Lord: ² Lord, hear my voice. Let thy ears be attentive to the voice of my supplication.

⁶ Then they took Jeremias and cast him into the dungeon of Melchias the son of Amelech, which was in the entry of the prison: and they let down Jeremias by ropes into the dungeon, wherein there was no water, but mire. And Jeremias sunk into the mire.

^{2 (2:3)} And he said: I cried out of my affliction to the Lord, and he heard me: I cried out of the belly of hell, and thou hast heard my voice. ^{3 (2:4)} And thou hast cast me forth into the deep, in the heart of the sea, and a flood hast compassed me: all thy billows, and thy waves have passed over me. ^{4 (2:5)} And I said: I am cast away out of the sight of thy eyes: but yet I shall see the holy temple again.

²⁴ Who having received such a charge, thrust them into the inner prison and made their feet fast in the stocks. ²⁵ And at midnight, Paul and Silas, praying, praised God. And they that were in prison heard them. ²⁶ And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. And immediately all the doors were opened and the bands of all were loosed. ²⁷ And the keeper of the prison, awakening out of his sleep and seeing the doors of the prison open, drawing his sword, would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled. ²⁸ But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying: Do thyself no harm, for we all are here.
